How will Dogs stand up to national spotlight that comes with Cam Newton?

Aaron Murray needs to get off to a fast start against Auburn. (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray needs to get off to a fast start against Auburn. (Associated Press)

A few early thoughts on this year’s renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry …

It’d take the best performance of the season on the part of Todd Grantham’s defense to stop Cam Newton, and the odds are long against it happening. He’s just too talented and the Dogs haven’t done a good job this season against quarterbacks who can run. (This one, of course, can pass, too.) About the best we can hope for is that Georgia makes Newton and the Tigers work for it and doesn’t give up big plays. …

After watching Auburn and Arkansas go back and forth last month in a game with a basketball score, a lot of folks warmed to the idea that the Tigers don’t have a very good defense and that Georgia’s best shot at winning this game is to get into an offensive shootout. If that does indeed prove to be the case, the key for the Dogs is going to be getting off to a fast start and not having to try and play catch-up. Another shaky first quarter like Aaron Murray has suffered in the past two games and Georgia may be toast against Auburn. …

No secret to what Auburn will do on defense. Double up or roll its pass coverage toward A.J. Green and blitz their brains out, hoping to rattle Murray into another rash of turnovers like he had against the Gators. The strength of the Tigers’ D is their front seven, so the play of the Dogs’ maddeningly inconsistent offensive line in both pass protection and run-blocking will be a key to whether the Dogs get blown out or keep it close. …

It’ll be interesting to see how the intangibles play out. For whatever reason, the visiting team in this series often has the upper hand. However, the confidence with which the Tigers are playing this year may well counter that. But what effect will all the off-field conversation about Newton and the NCAA investigation have on Auburn? …

Few will be predicting a Georgia win Saturday, but despite Mark Richt’s efforts to play down the “signature” aspect of the game, there’s no denying that if the Dogs somehow come out of Jordan-Hare Stadium with a win, it will be one of the biggest (and most unlikely) victories by a Georgia team in quite a few years. …

The pressure is on Auburn, which can play for the national championship if it wins out, but it’s also on Georgia, which has a chance to win back some respect in a nationally televised game.

How are you feeling about the Dogs’ chances?

I honestly think we’ll play well in this game. We usually do against Auburn, and we’ve had their number the past four years. But I also believe we’ll come up short in the end. I’d say 34-27 Auburn.

Cam Newton had 13 traffic violations while at Florida.

12 have been taken care of, 1 is in Continuance for driving with a suspended driver’s license.

Remember the multiple times UGA player have been ARRESTED for driving with a suspended driver’s license, and deemed “thugs”????

I think that the dawgs could very well pull out a win. the key is getting out on the board first, it seems to be the norm that the defense takes a while to warm up. the dawgs have proven in big games that they are a second half team. if they can go into half down by a touchdown or l0 points. We very well could see an upset in my eyes

I think this is a winnable game IF the Dawgs don’t turn it over, establish a running game to limit Auburn’s possessions and slow Newton down enough to make him throw the ball. Three large ifs. Start giving them a short field and it could get ugly fast.

I think Auburn will win, but I really don’t think there’s any pressure on UGA at all. We are terrible, and we’ve had a lousy year. If we lose, we can still beat Tech to go to a bowl game. I think the pressure is completely all on Auburn.

Nothing to lose, so to speak, for the Dawgs. We aren’t expected to win, whereas Auburn most certainly is, and has to think about beating not only us, but Bama, and the Eastern Division champ (not much of a challenge this year.)

If not, then unfortunately he should sit. You guys have a great, class act coach….just an off season.

I have watched my beloved Bulldogs lose more games than they ought to these past few seasons and have lowered my expectations a bit because I just hate to get disappointed over and over. I really don’t think they can beat Auburn, mentally or physically. My only hope is that Georgia just doesn’t get embarrassed. The Tech game should be fun, and judging by Tech’s play this season, we should have the upper hand. But I’ve learned anything is possible with this team, including losing to a much less talented team.

Agree w/BK on GA’s and AU’ defense. Unfortunately, for UGA, Murray will get rattled by AU def while UGA DC settles into his soft zone and we get trampled. GA’s going to have to gamble on defense to stop Cam N. Take our chances with his passing beating us and not his running. He’s going to gain yards running no matter what GA tries only hope is to slow him down and break his confidence. However, Grantham has yet to learn or show any different schemes to slow running teams. The only thing consistent w/Grantham is losing to running teams. He’s got to go.

UGA has been in every game they’ve lost this year and managed to figure out a way to lose the game. I do not see why this game should be any different. I am not convinced that UGA will win, but I think there is a far better chance of UGA playing a close game and finally figuring out a way to win (vs. lose), than AU blowing them out. After all, AU’s defense is pretty suspect.

Grantham’s defense has gotten better and better , a lot less missed assignments and that bodes well for next year.So I think the defense will do their job, even if Auburn get 35 or 40 point.
That brings us to the offense. The only way we can beat Auburn is to out score them and they are going to put plenty of point on the board. We could have won all five of the games lost this year with a better offensive scheme and quicker to make the changes during the game. Bobo will never be a big time colleges offensive coordinator, he’s just not good enough to keep up with the pace, this has been obvious ever since CMR gave him that job, not because he earned it but because he likes Bobo. Even though Bobo did a much better job calling play’s against Florida and if not for Murray having a bad game , UGA would have beaten Florida by two touchdowns. But Bobo is still Bobo and over thinks everything. When you do that you can’t make a commitment and stick to it.
The bottom line is as long as Bobo is the offensive coordinator, UGA will never be able to” FINISH THE DRILL”. Reality says that we will not be able to keep up will Auburn’s offensive weapons.

Richt has a 4-0 record recently against Auburn. And Georgia’s rush defense matches up pretty well with Aburn’s run heavy offense. Georgia also hasa better TO margin than Auburn. Georgia has better special teams. Georgia’s coach has a better record against top ranked teams. If Richt loses, Murray and the first year into the new 3-4 defense will be the culprit. If Richt wins, credit Murray & Ealey & Grantham. Hard to imagine a Freshman QB and Grantham’s inexperienced defense outplaying Cam Newton, the greatest quarterback in the hitory of the SEC.

ARdawg

I say the Dawgs win. IF Richt prepares the team which is something he has not done this year. Newton has to be approached defensively and prepared for better than we did against Mallet (and still could have won that game). Newton is like a Mallet on Mesculine. The defensive line has to contain him and stop him from running and Grantham will need to hold off of the blitz most of the day. Blitzing will get us burned keep coverage close in the secondary man to man. Offensively, Murray will have to light them up from the opening seconds. There can be no misfiring from opening kick off as was with FL and Ida ST.

The Defense will do enough to win the game. The question mark is the UGA Offense. It’s going to take 40+ points to be Auburn

I just don’t understand the rationale of an objective UGA fan that thinks the Dawgs will win this game. Hope is one thing, but there is nothing that has transpired over this season that says that we will win this game. I will be surprised if we keep it close going into the 3rd quarter.

Furthermore, be prepared for Bobo & Richt to TRY and play ball control and keep stubbornly trying to run the football to no avail (which will put us behind by 14 to 21 points early on). I want them to win, but I just don’t OBJECTIVELY see this happening on Saturday.

Murf, 2005 came along and he was all alone, playing with his recruits, new coaches. We’re up against AU, fourth qtr, Richt calls 3 pass plays, runs 23 seconds off the clock, punts, the rest is history. We lose the game. Willie’s D got the blame cuz we got burned on 4th and forever, pass play over the middle. That answer your question?

Dawgs have the talent to make a good showing Bill. Will they? Can’t answer that question. I will be there Saturday, wearing Red and Black, enjoying some tailgating, playing the role of spoiler. Like I’ve become accustomed to under this regime.

Dawg 73, I think the only way we have a chance to win this game is play a “ball control” type offense. Mix the run and short pass early on. Run on the corners, misdirections, screens, short slants. Keep the defense guessing. And, if it’s working don’t stop doing it, which is vintage Bobo.

Then get 4 AU turnovers. Then we have a slim chance. I gurantee the Auburn people are fearing us coming. The ones I know are.

UGA has 5 losses this year. AU beat 4 of those same teams. AU held Lattimore to his lowest output this season. AU beat the best defense in the league, LSU. While the pass defense needs a lot of help the front 7 need no help. Call the entire D weak and you’ll realize your mistake long after it’s too late. There are games in which the planets just aren’t aligned for one teams advantage, this is one of those games for UGA. IT is true that Auburn needs this game to keep a dream alive for an SEC championship and hopes of even a higher accomplishment. But UGA needs this game to have a reason to keep believing. Georgia has it’s identity riding on this game. If UGA comes out without a win then who knows what’s next for them. Tech will smell blood and if they drop that game a lot of UGA fans will go back to firing Richt as a solution. Good luck cuz UGA has more than this year riding on this game. The pressure is on both teams but Georgia has its future at stake.

UGA insider…You are right about one thing. Miami wants Richt. They recognize that Richt would instantly elevate their program. Imagine such integrity in Miami and they see Richt as young, talented and with excellent future. Lots of folks (outside the fair-weather so, called UGA fans) see that Richt is a great coach. There are many teams lining up if Richt were to leave. That being said–I hear that Richt is very popular with administration and there is no way he is fired this year–regardless. It would be an unbelievable lack of vision to fire CMR and the program would be set back 10 years or worse–as far back as SMU.

Granthum MUST put a spy/shadow on Newton – Olgetree or Dent?

The defensive player must wrap up and put a helment in auburn players chests.

Murray will have to be allowed to use his feet to slow down Fairley – should have him roll out a lot, he seems to do well in rollout situations anyway.

Bill King did were you in a drunken stupor when you watched the Georgia/Florida game? I don’t recall blitzes rattling Murray into a rash of turnovers. His first pass of a game that was intercepted was thrown a split second late resulting in the pick. His second pick was on perfect pass that his the tight-end in stride in both hands that was picked after the tight-end failed to hold onto it. Should have been a gain for at least 40 yards. Only the interception in overtime was the result of a bad decision and maybe had something to do with defensive pressure.

The key to a Dawgs victory will be to try to establish the run game early and control the clock to keep Cam Newton off the field. Murray also has to throw the ball deep to AJ Green. He got behind the Florida defense all day long yet Murray never threw a deep pass to him. That has to change for the Dawgs to have a chance.

Ga will be in position to score late when the SEC officals will decide it’s time to protect the SEC’s highest ranked team and a close call, blown call or made-up from thin air call will decide the game in Auburn’s favor.

Whenever you play a team like Auburn…whereby one player is the star of the team…you must attack that player. Cam Newton is that player.
The Dawgs defense must attack him relentlessley for 4 qtrs….whether they have the personnel to do it or not.

The defense that can pull that off is one that is strong..specifically in the interior…with blazing speed and quickness on the edges. No…Ga does not have that kind of speed. So to make up for it…Grantham must be creative with blitz packages coming from any direction at any time. Its the only way to win….I’m not interested in just keeping it semi-respectable by focusing on not giving up the big play. You have to gamble and have the strength to show Newton the turf…face first on numerous occasions.

On offense…little pressure on Murray as Ga is not expected to win anyway. Let the kid play his game…the creativity needs to come from our defense. Attack Newton…Spy Newton…contain Newton.

Tall order I know…but its the only way.

2. UGA has not lost in regulation in 5 games
.
3. UGA has score 190 points in the lst 5 games and Chattanooga scored 24 points on Aub.
.
4. If not for 4 untimely funmbles UGA would be 8-1
.
5. UGA has a 4 game winning atreak against Aub (UGA is in their heads)
.
6. This is the best D Auburn has faced. (yes LSu and MSU are ranked higher over the course of the year but UGA’s last five games have been better than both LSU and MSU)
.
7. Cam will be distracted by the laptop Murray brings to the game or he will be getting cheat sheets from some Fla classmates.

Did you dawgs see the Auburn/LSU game, that is when Auburn stomped the same team that beat Bama? 440 yards rushing, 440 yards, 440. And Auburn took a knee inside their ten at the end of the game. 440 yards, rushing that is, aganst the best D in the league, 440 yards, repeat that, say it slowly so it will sink in. What has GA. got to stop that. 440 yards rushing, again, slowly, breath deeply and repeat.

4 out of 5 of Georgia’s losses were to top 25 ranked teams. None of the losses to top 25 teams were blowouts, Florida won by 3, Arkansas by 7, SC by 9, MSU by 13, Georgia had a chance to win each game in the 4th quarter. Colorado loss was by 3 points. Average loss margin is less than a touchdown. Untimely fumbles by King & Ealey, and untimely interceptions by Murray. Georgia could easily be 6-2 or 7-1 right now if 3 or 4 plays were different, that’s how close Georgia is to being a top 10 ranked team (Ark defensive blown coverage, Colorado win without King’s fumble, Florida a win without Murray’s int, SC Ealey fumble).

So this game will be closer than people think, and Georgia’s playing well now, won 4 out of the last 5 games, only loss in last 5 games was to Florida by 3 in OT.

Georgia’s defense cost Georgia 4 losses, gave up too many points against Florida, Arkansas, and Colorado, got gauged by the run agnst MSU & SC + AJ’s supension in those 2 games hurt as offense wasn’t productive, or balanced, defenses put 8 in the box, and didn’t have to double AJ. Murray’s 4 TO’s put defense in tough position in Florida game.

This was the final straw for Dan Hawkins: “Colorado blew a 28-point lead at Kansas when the Jayhawks scored 35 points over the final 11 minutes for a stunning 52-45 win. It was the biggest collapse in the 121-year-old program’s history.”

Hawkins was hired after Colorado lost to Texas 70-3 in the Big 12 Championship game in 2005. Now *that* is a statement win.

According to that article in the New York Times, Bill McCartney, the coach who led Colorado to a national championship in 1990 is interested in the job. 70 is the new 60, so they say.

Auburn’s wonder kid Newton only ran for 70 yards aainst Miss St. That’s AUburn’s achilles hill. Stop Newton’s run game, and you ground AUburn’s scoring offense. Surethat will be the plan for Georgia, make Can throw to win, which he can’t. Auburn’s offense only generated 17 points in that game. Georgia’s great against the run, Cam Newton will not run for more than 70 yards on Georgia.

Don’t forget about Dyer, the top running back.

Miss. St. (game 2), Clemson (game 3) and La.-Monroe are the only games in which Auburn has not rushed for at least 300 yards. They averaged 7 yards per attempt against La-Mon and 4 TDs.

Only Miss. St. (4.1) and Clemson (4.7) have held Auburn under 5 yards per attempt. They averaged 5.9 ypa against S.C. Against Kentucky it was 6 ypa. All other games were over 7 ypa. The season average so far is 6.6 ypa, and opponents have averaged 3.5 ypa.

Passing, Auburn averages 10.3 yards per attempt. Opponents have averaged 6.5 ypa. Against SEC opponents only, Auburn has averaged 8.2 ypa.

As the holiday season is quickly approaching here are some
1) Cam gets mad after iron bowl and an gets speeding ticket!
Wonder if Cam’s got an Alabama license since that Georgia or Florida one is suspended.
2)and a Boise State vs TCU BCS championship…or is that BS championship!
3) Tech’s new QB makes Yech fans forget Josh “Robot Rollcall” Nesbitt.
4) Obama finds Bin Laden, and puts a cap in his——Whooo..Quick to the Slow.”
5) They find no oil left in the gulf, no wait oil in the gulf, no no oil in the gulf, no wait oil in the gulf.
6) Miles whats his name dumps Kim Kardasian, Reggie Bush then dumps her again.
7) Cam Newton wins Heisman
8) Cam Newton dates Kim Kardasian
9) Cam Newton dumps Kim kardasian
10 Mark Richt resigns as coach of the Georgia BullDogs.
11) mark Richt dates Kim Kardasian
12) Mrs. Richt kicks Kim Kardasian’s ___ whooo..quick to the slow.
13) Conan O’Brien wins ratings war over Today show and Letterman
14) Conan O’Brien dates Kim Kardasian, then dumps her.
15) Democrats kick out the republicans in the house.
16) Democrats all date Kim Kardasian
17) Mark Bradley does some actual journalism and wins the Pulitzer prize
18) and yes Mark Bradley date Kim Kardasian
19) and then dates Kim from the real Houswives of Atlanta
20) Kanye West apologizes to George Bush ( even as he has no reason to)

21) And the moral to this list? All of the above have a greater chance of happening then my beloved Dawgs beating Auburn. Folks is is not going to happen. Auburn and Cam” I know that laptop is here somewhere” Newton are just too good. And these Dawgs are just not ready for prime time. They have a coaching staff that is more interested in doing just enough to keep their jobs.

I will wait for next year and pray for an SEC championship

Well lets just say this….if us having a chance to win depends on the O Line- we are DONE. This group could not block a high school team. Add to the mix of Ealey or Calab no doubt having a fumble or two and the defense likely to give up a “deer in open field” TD or two and I expect it to be along the lines of Auburn 41 UGA 24. I am just ready for this season to be over- this team brought this mess on themselves by all the off field problems. I hope and pray that we dont have to endure a bowl game too.

UGA RUN DEFENSE IS BETTER THAN ALABAMA, LSU, AND FLORIDA AGAINST THE RUN. 2ND IN THE SEC, ONLY GIVIGN UP ABOUT 100 RUSHING YARDS A GAME. AUBURN WON’T BE ABLE TO WIN BY RUNNING THE BALL WELL ON GEORGIA. UGA DEFENSE STOPS AUBURN’S RUSH OFFENSE, UGA PULLS THE UPSET.

LSU was only allowing 86 rush yds per game and we rushed for 440 on them. South Carolina was only allowing 60 rush yds per game when we played them and we rushed for 334. UGA allows over 100 per game? You can figure that one out LOL!

MikeP

Auburn won’t blitz much. They get the job done with the front four and let the linebackers play linebacker.
A team that can run for 440 yards against LSU’s defense will get about all they want against Georgia.
Auburn’s offense has been developing all year and as the season goes forward Newton has been running less and passing more. Auburn has three other backs that have all had 100 yard games, including freshman RB Mike Dyer who now has more rushing yards than South Carolina’s Lattimore.
Auburn’s defense has been improving game by game. Held LSU to 17 points, which is better than Saban and bammer could do. The last 7 points Ole’ Miss scored and all 24 that Chattanooga scored were against reserves.

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

First, no disrespect to GA.
They are a quality SEC program and always dangerous, no matter the record.
Can they hang with Auburn? … not this year.

Ga may keep it close for a half but at the end AU do what AU does.
The same run game that piled up 400+ rushing against LSU will bring power on the inside and speed on the outside.
Come up and stop it (if you can) and watch the 50 pass play.
They will keep the defense under tremendous pressure and they will do it at a blistering pace.
Late in the game when the defense is looking for an oxygen bottle is when it gets out of hand.

I lot of people speculate whether the team will be distracted.
Perhaps they should wonder what might happen if they come out and play with a chip on their shoulder.
I watched every AU game this year. Cam is a joy to watch. He is like a kid on a playground.
He smiles, laughs, celebrates with the crowd.

This team and these coaches are angry,……expect some extra time in the whirlpool bath for UGA.
This could get ugly.
