How will Dogs stand up to national spotlight that comes with Cam Newton?

Aaron Murray needs to get off to a fast start against Auburn. (Associated Press)

A few early thoughts on this year’s renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry …

It’d take the best performance of the season on the part of Todd Grantham’s defense to stop Cam Newton, and the odds are long against it happening. He’s just too talented and the Dogs haven’t done a good job this season against quarterbacks who can run. (This one, of course, can pass, too.) About the best we can hope for is that Georgia makes Newton and the Tigers work for it and doesn’t give up big plays. …

After watching Auburn and Arkansas go back and forth last month in a game with a basketball score, a lot of folks warmed to the idea that the Tigers don’t have a very good defense and that Georgia’s best shot at winning this game is to get into an offensive shootout. If that does indeed prove to be the case, the key for the Dogs is going to be getting off to a fast start and not having to try and play catch-up. Another shaky first quarter like Aaron Murray has suffered in the past two games and Georgia may be toast against Auburn. …

No secret to what Auburn will do on defense. Double up or roll its pass coverage toward A.J. Green and blitz their brains out, hoping to rattle Murray into another rash of turnovers like he had against the Gators. The strength of the Tigers’ D is their front seven, so the play of the Dogs’ maddeningly inconsistent offensive line in both pass protection and run-blocking will be a key to whether the Dogs get blown out or keep it close. …

It’ll be interesting to see how the intangibles play out. For whatever reason, the visiting team in this series often has the upper hand. However, the confidence with which the Tigers are playing this year may well counter that. But what effect will all the off-field conversation about Newton and the NCAA investigation have on Auburn? …

Few will be predicting a Georgia win Saturday, but despite Mark Richt’s efforts to play down the “signature” aspect of the game, there’s no denying that if the Dogs somehow come out of Jordan-Hare Stadium with a win, it will be one of the biggest (and most unlikely) victories by a Georgia team in quite a few years. …

The pressure is on Auburn, which can play for the national championship if it wins out, but it’s also on Georgia, which has a chance to win back some respect in a nationally televised game.

Surprised a 4-5 team is not on the line to lose by more than 9 against the #2 team in the country. You’d think Aubun would be favored by 21, at least. But they’re not. Most think this will be a 7 or 8 point close game. Auburn SHOULD blow Georgia out, Newton’s a lot better QB tham Aaron Murray will ever be, but you never know.

Curious-heard on how the weather is going to be at kickoff? Would love for it to rain and slow the Cam train down.We need lots of rain on SAT

i’VE HEARD ON BLOGS hUTSON mASON WILL PLAY THE FIRST QUARTER, DUE TO mURRAY’S FIRST QUARTER CHOKING. hOPE THAT’S TRUE. GEORGIA NEEDS A FIRST QUARTER SPARK AT QB, MURRAY CAN’T HIT THE SIDE OF A BARN IN THE FIRST QUARTER’S–KID JUST CRACKS UNDER PRESSURE. MASON’S COOL, POISE, LOVE TO SEE MASON LIGHT AUBURN UP FOR 2 TD’S IN THE FIRST QUARTER.

“the play of the Dogs’ maddeningly inconsistent offensive line…. and DB’s and schemes, turnovers… where do we stop?

I am a huge dogs fan but do think this could get ugly. Maybe the allegations will slow him down but if we are consistend we will play good on D for 1 and 2 down and they will convert on 3 and 19.

How many times????

None the less…. Go DAWGS!

i’LL TELL YOU SOMETHING. IF RICHT WINS, OR EVEN ENDS IN A CLOSE SCORE, THE CHANCE OF CROWELL, ROME, DREW, COMIN ON TO GEORGIA, BECOMES A BIG CHANCE. THEY’LL ALL BE AT THIS GAME.

ANOTEHR THING. AJ MIGHT BE HEADED TO THE NFL. IF SO, EVERY CATCH ADD $$$$ TO HIS CONTRACT, AND EVERY TD, ADDS MILLIONS. LOOK FOR AJ TO TORCH AUBURN, BUT IT MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH FOR THE WIN IF MURRAY TANKS, OR EALEY DOESN’T DOMINATE.

GOOD CHANCE GEORGIA GOES WITH 2 QB’S IN THIS GAME 1) T THROW AUBURN OFF 2) TO HELP MURRAY GET OVER HIS NERVES

IF EALEY, MURRAY & AJ ALL PLAY UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL, AUBURN REALLY DOESN’T HAVE A CHANCE. BUT THATS A BIG IF.

GEORGIA NEEDS A STRONG SHOWING TO PROVE TO CROWELL THAT THE 1-4 START WASN’T THE REAL GEORGIA. THERE’S A LOT RIDING ON THIS GAME. GEORGIA IS 4-2 WITH AJ BACK, LOST TO COLORADO ON KING FUMBLE, LOST TO FLORIDA IN OT ON MURRAY INT. SHOULD BE 6-0 WITH AJ.

Ealey, King and the running game is imperative. They must be solid or we lose. Murray must be clicking on all cylinders. No beginning game jitters. The O-line must play their game of the year and up to missed potential. Open some holes and soften up that AU defense for the pass.

Murph,

I’d say a sloppy game we’d be more inclined to lose. Although I’d favor a sloppy game in Athens given all the other circumstances the same

This is FUNNY almost commical. These Uga fans predicting a win over Auburn. They are rated as the 2nd best team in the country and you cannot beat Colorado. You couldnt beat the weakest UF team in years. You lost to Mississippi State, yet you’re gonna win against Auburn? This is why Uga are some of the most Blind loyalist !

I’ll bet Mark Richt’s butt puckered this morning when Colorado’s Dan Hawkins got fired.

A pitiful Hawkins, with a pitiful football team, beat a much more talented UGA this season, before losing 5 straight, including Kansas last Saturday.

MR is talking trash now. This is hillarious. And the old koon Dawg Bill King thinks we have this monster chance b.c we’ve beaten Allbarn 4 in a row.

Where is this MR attitude Florida week?

All the 4 in a row, series is dead even, they’ve played 149 times, it’s as if there’s this feel good scenario in the air for Georgia football.

It’s got 6-6 written all over it guys, it’s ugly, it’s B’ham bowl bown, unranked ugly.

Reality check dawg fans, the five teams you have beaten are a combined 14 and 40 this season, two of them being LA Lafayette and Idaho State, and you think you are going to beat the #2 team in the country? At their stadium? In a season where you lost to Colorado? Really????? Do ya’ll still think you have a chance to win the SEC this season too? The fact is you will be relying on a win vs. Tech to save your season and make it to a bowl game.

in 06 there was very much this same scenario lined up between these two teams. UGA and Richt broke it off in TT and Auburn. Will it happen again, who knows? But I’m thinking it will be a good game. There’s no over inflated fan support. Just a realistic view, The Dawgs have excellent opportunity to play spoiler. Can Cam stop them? Thats why they play the game, isn’t it?

How long as Chizk been at AU?? Hmmm??

Auburn is really in the hunt for the MNC and they are over due. Now, as for my alma mater, why is it that 2010 is yet again another dreary, pathetic year?? I just hope that Aaron Murray does not choke again. He stunk it up in Jax ………in front of his home state crowd too. CHOKE!!!

Chizk has been at Auburn 10 years? Nope. 7? Nope. TWO YEARS and here we at UGA are with nothing in 5 or 6 years to show for Mark Richt and his staff. He needs to be gone.

Let us stomp GT and then beg some great running backs to come to UGA.

Go Dogs.

What a stupid question.

Newton is 0-0.

Dawgs will win big. Everyone is healthy. Our offense is more potent than AU. AU defense is terrible. Newton will feel pressure from new scheme TG developed this week. Look for lots of blitzes and for Murray to go deep early to AJ. Will be a great day for dawgs.
