There aren’t many better ways to spend a Saturday in November

Branden Smith made himself useful on offense as well as special teams and defense Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more thoughts on Georgia’s 55-7 victory over Idaho State …

As I detailed Saturday, I had my quibbles with the Dogs’ performance against the Bengals, despite it being an overwhelming (as expected) victory. My concerns chiefly were the rather “shaky” start, as Mark Richt termed it, and the fact that Georgia wasn’t able to run at will against a defense that its scout team ought to be able to beat easily.

But aside from those complaints engendered by my innate worrywart tendencies when it comes to Georgia football, I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday. The fall weather was glorious (OK, a bit chilly in the shade under the overhang where we sit at the stadium) and the turnout was better than I expected, at least for the first half. Once the 1980 national championship team had been recognized at halftime, many fans headed for the gates and someone broke out the beach balls in the crowd. By the fourth quarter we could clearly hear the cheerleaders’ cheers from the other end of the stadium, and those with yearning to shift seats could pretty much sit anywhere they wanted to. My brothers, who were sitting up in the upper upper North stands, came down and joined my wife and me in Section 104 for the rather listless last stanza (if you look at it by quarters, ISU won the last one, 7-0) when some of the more obscure team members among the 74 Dogs who played got into the game.

So what else, besides the final score, was there to delight in?

True freshman safety Alec Ogletree getting his first start in a game that saw him partially block a punt to set up the Dogs’ first touchdown. He’s going to be a beast…

Blair Walsh tying his career best with a 53-yard field goal kicked into a stiff wind. (The down side was that a pair of field goals was all the Dogs could manage in the first quarter … oops there goes the worrywart again). …

Branden Smith showing his three-way value with a fine punt return and three runs for 27 yards (which put him ahead of Washaun Ealey for the day) in addition to playing cornerback. …

Bruce Figgins catching his first touchdown pass since the 2007 season and the heartening way his teammates celebrated. …

And the realistic and yet still somewhat optimistic way most fans I talked to are looking at the Auburn game (which is mostly what we talked about during all except the second quarter). The odds are long, but this is Georgia-Auburn, after all, a series in which the visitor frequently wins and drastic underdogs have knocked off their highly ranked rivals before. Few were willing to say they think it will happen, but nearly all thought it could. …

Are we not like not like a 500 ball team against teams with winning records in the sec the last two or three seasons? Richt better turn it around no more wait till next year…so tired of hearing that %^&%. Yes I’m a die hard dawg and I want better from this coaching staff…much better. We consistanly recruit better players…if Richt doesn’t win the SEC….next year….makes me puke a little to say it…I’m done with him and hope the University is as well!

I watched the game in stands on Saturday and watched again today on CSS south replay and actually felt better about our start when the announcers talked about how bad the sun was in our eyes in the first quarter. I noticed that when we changed directions we played much better. That gives me another reason to not like the 12:30 PM start times.

The only thing that can stop Newton is if the NCAA digs something up between now and Saturday to keep him on the sideline. Grantham definitely has a long week ahead of him.

That being said, I’m not yet convinced that AU’s defense is any better than Georgia’s this season. In order for Georgia to win this game, the offense will have to put together some long drives. The longer the Dawgs can keep Newton off the field, the better the chances to pull of the miracle upset.

I’m not sure of the likelihood of an upset on the Plains on Saturday, but it would work wonders for a team in search of some morale in a season where the guys need it in the worst way. Weirder things have happened, especially in this rivalry…

Go Dawgs!!

UGA and Grantham should have registered a shut out against this highschool team yesterday. Stacy Searles and our S & C coach should be dismissed at the end of the season. I would not be surprised if the Dawgs wins Saturday. The secondary for Aurburn is average at best. They may be looking ahead to Bama and we may just catch them off guard. As long as we keep a spy on Newton i.e. Ogletree we could shock them. I look for it to be a shoot out with lots of points scored. Should be fun as it always is

Auburn is very beatable on DEFENSE…UGA just has to play ball control offense, sustain long drives and then capitalize in the red zone with TD. That’s the best shot formula to beat Auburn right now…if you get into a “track meet” type game you will come on the losing end…Auburn’s offense is frightening as far as speed and big play ability not only from Newton but the RB’s. You focus too much on Newton, McCaleb will beat u.

Gator Hater, you ought to look at the game realistically and not through those rose colored glasses you obviously are wearing. I’m not an AU fan but logic tells me they’re going to kick your collective butts up and down the field. A. J. may catch a few but Newton is going to get about 250 running the ball down your throats and about the same number of yards through the air. Have a nice day in Auburn…………………or watching the game from a local pub somewhere in Georgia.

Laugh it up, dawgtard! The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on rubbing it in all you want, dawgtard, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

And Tech fans — 8 out of 9. Can’t wait.

DawgVoiceofReason

November 7th, 2010
10:52 pm

Using logic applied by many of the “geniuses” here, here’s my list of coaches who should be fired immediately (working mainly from Boweevil’s list of coaches “ahead” of Mark Richt):

Urban Meyer – all that top 5 recruiting talent and preseason number one pick by some and he loses 3 games in a row and almost loses to the worst UGA team in Mark Richt’s tenure. He should be let go very soon, before he has another breakdown.

Jim Tressel – another team with unbelievable talent and another preseason number 1 pick, but he gets blown out in national championship games and has lost already this year

Bob Stoops – No national championships in a long time and his teams also get blown out in national championships plus his team was number one, blew it and then got whipped by Texas A&M, a team that lost to a “terrible” UGA team just 11 months ago.

Nick Saban – two losses for the defending national champions and he lost to a coach of a team whose own fans think is terrible, some guy they call the “mad hatter” and he lost to a mediocre USC; just pathetic and wait til he loses big time to Auburn. Tons of talent – two Heisman trophy candidates and a senior quarterback who had never lost until Nick Saban became his coach. Who would want him coaching quarterbacks?

Mack Brown – he clearly has lost all ability to coach. I can’t even keep up with all the losses this year and then just crushed by Kansas State. What more needs to be said?

Brian Kelly – sure he can win at Cincinnatti but what has he done so far at Notre Dame, the most storied program in college football

Les Miles – this guy almost loses to UT (a team that the worst UGA team in 10 years absolutely destroyed), his own fans don’t think he’s any good and he couldn’t manage the clock if his life depended on it.

Joe Paterno – he’s over the hill, too nice and what has he done lately? So he won a national championship or two in his day, his time has clearly passed.

Chip Kelly – His team is still in the hunt for the national championship this year, so maybe we let him coach until they lose, but fire him as soon as they do because he is the coach of the player who punched another player on national TV, after losing to Boise State, a team that UGA crushed; just embarrassing

Gary Patterson and Chris Peterson – Well, maybe they shouldn’t be fired but you sure wouldn’t hire them to coach big-time college football since they haven’t won at that level yet.

Steve Spurrier – His time has clearly come and gone. He is blowing his best chance to simply win the SEC East; forget about the conference.

Paul Johnson – Sure he won an ACC championship but he’ll never have a winning record against UGA; might as well get rid of him now.

So, who does that leave us with that might be worthy of coaching at UGA when we get rid of the obviously worthless Mark Richt (Who cares about two SEC championships, 3 SEC championship games, domination over Tech and Auburn and a top 10 winning percentage, the first offense EVER at UGA to score 30 points in 5 straight games, no less with a freshman QB?)? Don’t even think of the fellow at Auburn with an unbeaten team this year. His team lost to UGA last year and look what his record was the year before that, awful. I don’t have the answer, but let’s at least get rid of these guys who just can’t get the job done with every advantage possible.

yeah, unfortunately what I want from the Dawgs this weekend is a hard fought battle. I want them to play tough through all four quarters. I don’t see Georgia winning the game, Cam is so tough to stop. Auburn will score 42+ but Georgia will hang in there throughout most of the game and make a run or two. Dawgs will have trouble matching the high score but I feel that Georgia can get into the 30’s and if the D makes some big plays, forces turnovers it could be one of those whoever has the ball last wins.

I think Auburn gets this one by 10, 45-35 or something close to it.

Cam Newton would destroy them!! Case in point Bama let LSU qb’s get the most valuable

Reason, good point about Meyer. I have asked several times why he deserves any credit this year. Returns a Top 10 team. Best back to back recruiting classes in schools history probably. He loses 3 in a row, barely beats UGA worst team in a decade, and folks say it was a spendid coaching job. Truth be told , even he admitted that he didn’t win anything that day, but UGA handed him the game with the short field on TO.

Haven’t hard you crying so much this year, Alt-Dawg. Why is that ? Your point about the hated Meyer, though: I agree that it didn’t take much of a coaching job to take a team with 3 losses in a row and beating UGA. And yes, the game could have gone either way. But, he’s had to deal with the loss of a couple of assistants, and both the OC and DC in the last 2 years, I think. That, and the turmoil at the end of last year with his “retirement”; it’s not surprising that he was going to have a rough year this year, together with breaking in a new QB who wasn’t all that. His ship’s probably turned around, though. How about Georgia’s ?

DawgVoiceofReason,

November 7th, 2010 10:52 pm

That is a flimsy list is of 10 of the 20 coaches I listed who all have done better than Coach Richt (then you throw in 30 % more coaches to your list so that those have some validity compared to CMR and his lousy coaching staff.)

Half the coaches in fact doing better.

And, what do you say DawgVoiceofReason about even just those 10 ?

CMR better.

Urban Meyer – excuse me over 5 years he has more wins than every coach in America but 1 coach; and has 2 NC in this timeframe and over his entire career at Florida finds only 2 other coaches with a higher win %. Your point ? He lost 3 games. Hey dimwit, CMR lost 5 games last year and 5 games this year already. Judging him on losses 3 losses ? CMR is so far behind CUM on that point, that it is laughable that you start your comparison that CMR is somehow better than CUM with CMR’s 1-5 record vs CUM head-to-head. Feeble beginning for you DawgVoiceofReason. Unconvincing start. CMR is weak on the points you hold against CUM. Very weak in fact. Probably weakest of all for CMR compared to all coaches compared to CUM and this is your opening salvo to ME ?

Try again.

BoWeevil

November 8th, 2010
9:05 am

Bob Stoops – why have you begun yet another comparison of CMR with his betters and begin yet again talking about National Championships for Bob Stoops DawgVoiceofReason ? Bob Stoops Won the National Championship for Steve Spurrier at Florida, which is why I don’t list Steve Spurrier on my list of coaches (But, that doesn’t stop you from listing him anyway in REPLY to ME you say.) In addition, Bob Stoops has Won The BCS National Championship at Oklahoma. Oh, did Bob Stoops have a bad loss ? Wouldn’t be anything like 3-6 Colorado would it whom CMR just lost to ? What about 4-win Vandie who beat CMR to even get to 4 wins ? CMR has had 10 such HORRIBLE BAD LOSSES in his 10 years here at UGA, averaging 1 a year and you found a BAD LOSS for Bob Stoops ? The bad loss you list is to 6-3 Texas A&M. CMR lost this year to 3-6 Colorado. Let me see, which is worse ? Let me guess. Hmm. I bet you think losing this year to 6-3 Texas A&M is WORSE for Bob Stoops than CMR losing to 3-6 Colorado this year, am I right ? Hell yes. Exactly what you said. Oklahoma is the master of their own destiny to play probably Nebraska in the Big XII Championship Game and then yes another BCS Bowl Game for Bob Stoops. They are 7-2 and you pick on them for a bad loss you say this year to a 6-3 team while CMR has a 5-5 record with absolutely a clearly BAD LOSS to 3-6 Colorado this year. His BCS Bowl Wins include over a 1-loss opponent ranked # 2 in the polls who came in in the Final AP Poll # 5 in the nation after he whipped their butts by nearly 2 Touchdowns; and a BCS Bowl Win again over a Top 10 Final AP Poll Opponent on the National Stage. CMR has NEVER beat a Top 10 Final AP Poll team in ANY BOWL GAME ever and here this Bob Stoops has TWO (2) such wins over Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in BCS Bowls, and what do you try to float past everyone here ? That CMR is better than Bob Stoops in BCS Bowl Games. B.S. CMR has beat a # 21 FSU 5-Loss team and # 19 Hawaii team as his ONLY BCS Wins, neither on the National Stage against a Top 10 Final AP Poll team. Your summary ? CMR Better than Bob Stoops. Hogwash : Bob Stoops is one of the Top 5 Coaches in America Won / Lost Record his career at current school and # 7 in the Nation over the last 5 years in Won / Lost for his Oklahoma Program; compared to CMR # 16 current coach current school win percentage and # 20 coach in nation over the last 5 years by direct contrast.

GIBBERISH attempt to make CMR appear better than Bob Stoops on your points

Can’t wait to hear your next choice.

Nick Saban – Oh boy. Here we go with he has had all of 2 losses this season. Let’s see one of them to LSU who is ranked # 5 and your comment about that ? Just Pathetic, you summarize losing to # 5 LSU by Alabama Nick Saban. 2 Losses now on the season. CMR has a 5-5 record and Nick Saban is 7-2 and ranked # 11 in the Entire Country. CMR is # 59. And, this is your point ? Or, your point about Nick Saban is MY POINT about CMR ? Which is it ? In the CMR Era, Nick Saban has Two (2) National Championships at Two (2) Different Schools. He has 3 SEC Championships; he has Three (3) BCS Bowl Game Wins including Reigning BCS National Champions 14-0 in a season last year in which CMR was a piddling 8-5 (Hoping like hope to get back to 8-5 this season with NO HOPE.) His Reigning NC Win in the BCS NCG is over # 2 Final AP Poll Texas and his previous BCS National Championship Win is over # 3 Final AP Poll opponent as well. That is Two (2) BCS Bowl Wins over Top 10 Final AP Poll teams compared to CMR 0. Bunk that there is some measly way you can mealy-mouth Nick Saban into looking WORSE than CMR in even your own eyes son.

BUNK that you think this makes Nick Saban look worse than CMR. No it doesn’t

Mack Brown – now, we are comparing Mack Brown to CMR. Mack Brown has been to 4 BCS Bowl Games in the CMR Era and Won 3 of the 4, losing only to Alabama earlier this year when his QB got injured. He came into that game undefeated with him as his star. Even after the loss, Texas is ranked # 2 in the Final AP Poll. That is his 1 lone BCS Loss. Every other BCS Bowl Game was a Win for Mack Brown. Mack Brown beat a Top 10 Final AP Poll team on the national stage in a BCS Game 2 years ago and he beat an undefeated coming into the game # 1 ranked Southern California with their brand-spanking new Heisman Trophy Reggie Bush, both teams undefeated on the national stage coming in. Your retort to why you feel we are BETTER with CMR as our Christian Head Coach ? You can’t even keep up with the losses (5) by Mack Brown this season, while I am just as sure you can’t then keep up with CMR’s loses this year of 5 as well, right ? Or, the 5 CMR lost last year while he went 1-loss to NC only. Mack Brown is # 6 in the nation in won/lost record at his current school, while CMR is 10 places back at # 16; and you cannot keep up with the number of losses Mack Brown has this year. Texas in won/loss the last 5 years with Mack Brown is # 6 the last 5 years now including this season and Georgia is # 20 the last 5 years with CMR and you say here that Mack Brown obviously cannot coach anymore – that HE has LOST IT.

NONSENSE excuses you attempt to throw against the wall and have stick.

BoWeevil

Jim Tressel – you bring up NCG losses for Jim Tressel as to why CMR is BETTER ? In the CMR Era here at UGA, Jim Tressel has a NC at Ohio State 2002. 6 BCS Bowls Jim Tressel has been to in the same timeframe CMR has been here and Tressel won half the BCS Bowl Games he was in. He was on the National Stage playing a Top 10 Final AP Poll team in those 6 BCS Bowl Games while CMR has NOT beat 1 Top 10 Final AP Poll Team in ANY bowl game ever. Your Concluding ARGUMENT for Jim Tressel. He has ALREADY LOST 1 GAME THIS SEASON. Brilliant Bubba. CMR has lost 5 this year, ALREADY. And 5 more last year. 102-22 Jim Tressel Ohio State and CMR ? 95-32. Who in the blazes do you think is going to AGREE WITH YOU on this BS ?

Everyone needs to calm down.

I seem to remember most people saying that 2011 would be the year BEFORE the season even started.

We’re playing with a redshirt FRESHMAN QB who by all accounts has done a great job, but at times as expected he’s played like a freshman.

We’ve switched to a 3-4 defense from a 4-3 which takes time to install, plus we’re still getting the right personnel in. The terminology is different the assignments and reads are different, but the D has improved week to week for the most part.

Bobo’s play calling still leaves us scratching our heads at times but overall there has been improvement there as well.

I think everyone needs to take a step back and realize 5-5 is what you get with a brand new defenive scheme AND a redshirt freshman QB at the helm. It also didn’t help matters that our best offensive weapon wasn’t even available until game 4 this year.

Go back and look at Bama in Saban’s first year installing the 3-4 and he had an experienced QB.

Look at Texas this year with a basically redshirt freshman QB.

UGA is dealing with BOTH of these changes at the same time.

If most of the negative fans were in charge, Bobby Bowden and Joe Pa would have been fired LONG before they even sniffed at a national championship.

National championships are not an accurate judgement of a coach, there’s too much luck involved.

We’re having a down year, it happens, but wanting to get rid of a .700 + winning percentage coach in the SEC is like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Everyone needs to relax, get behind the team and support them in hopefully winning out and going into the offseason with some momentum!

Go Dawgs!!!

What I don’t understand about our running game is that for at least the last 2 years. Our guys get hit in the hole and just go down. You watch other teams and they break tackles. The only time our guys break long runs is if they aren’t hit till they are 10 yards down the field. It seems like our blocking scheme is telegraphing where the play is going and even Idaho State can read the keys and put people at the point of attack. So when our running back hits the hole the defense knows where they are coming and hits them right away before they can get started.

Auburn defense awful? Please folks, they have gthe best defensive player in the conference in Nick Fairley. They stop the run. They give up some yards on the pass but when the D shuts dwon the run and the other team gets behind, they will throw. Also with the kind of offense Auburn runs, they will give up points due to the quick scoring drives they get into.

I wouldn’t say the UGA defense is any better.

As for the guy/gal that posted as ‘time on your hands’…if I were you I wouldn’t be bragging about Tech’s fine academic standards. I mean why don’t you tell us just why Tech has a deal with the Atlanta University group for your ball-players to take courses over there? And as for Jan Kemp’s ‘exposing’ Georgia’s use of the remedial program to help keep athletes eligible, it was a practice that every school in the SEC – and I suspect Tech too since I know plenty of dumb-a$$ people that have managed to complete their athletic eligibility at Tech but never came close to graduating. You see the only time Tech has had success on the football field is when coaches that they want to hire and/or keep insist that the ’standards’ be relaxed so they can recruit, and keep, kids that would make them competitive…there’s a short-armed guy down in Central Florida that comes to mind, along with the one you’ve got now. By the way, plenty of schools continued to use their remedial program for years after Georgia abandoned it, and nobody seemed to care much.

And to ‘embarrassing dawgs’, the main thing that’s embarrassing is for a, so-called, Georgia fan to use use the term ‘our’ in your comments and, of course the skinnin’ of your ignorance with the ‘like georgia ‘done’ comment. Coach Richt is # 4 at .662 + winning percentage in the SEC in the Coach Richt Era

And, everyone knows Alabama has clearly passed CMR by as well.

.707 Win % 58-24 SEC LSU in the Coach Richt Era 2001- now
.670 Win % 53-26 SEC AUB in the Coach Richt Era 2001- now
.662 Win % 55-28 SEC UGA in the Coach Richt Era 2001- now

Tale of 2 halves of the Coach Richt 10-Year Era.

As for 2011, there was NO REASON why we couldn’t have been 12-2 this season instead of 7-6.
We lose 14 seniors and 4 juniors after 2010 season.
2011 we also face a FAR TOUGHER SCHEDULE next year than this year too.

(2) We BLEW IT last year, 2009
(3) We BLEW IT last five years 2006-2010.

How can any Georgia fan support this kind of garbage? TexasDawg, the Florida game was typical in how we play in big games now under CMR. We get behind early – sometimes big – then we rally to keep the score looking respectable. Richt thinks because his team rallies they really show character. How about sticking it to someone good in the 1st quarter? How about not letting the other team score on their opening drive? I watched this BS for the last 5 years and I’ve seen all I need to see. Wake up Georgia fans – the program should be elite! When you settle for mediocrity – you get CMR and BOBO!

At this point, I haven’t seen Auburn sit on their laurels yet this season after big or little wins. I don’t expect them to do so Saturday. Also, I haven’t noticed them looking ahead past anyone either. Credit Cheesestick for that. I have to admit it! I am jealous of LSU and Les Miles! This team knows that the greatest thing about the game is that it is SEC College Football! They always play to win! Not to loose! They bring out all the stops (fake punts, field goals, toss-sweep reverses, etc.) to win the game. Being an underdog means nothing because THEY practice, plan, and play to win (not play to not lose)! Tiger stadium was the only place to be last Saturday night! They upset Alabama with no chance to win from most prognosticators!

If Mark Richt and Georgia want to beat Auburn on Saturday they need to get the playbook from LSU and go out and play Georgia football and dictate the game. Instead of focusing on Cam Newtow, let’s focus on solid play on both sides of the ball, no mistakes, and some FUN suprises ( a toss sweep reverse – we run sweeps in every game – is just one idea). We have as much talent pound for pound as Auburn and maybe more. We just need to execute and do what LSU does which is believe before the game that we can and will win the game if we execute OUR GAME PLAN and have fun in the process. There is not better venue in sports greater than an intense rival football game on a crisp fall Saturday in the SEC! Go DAWGS!!!

RobbylookoutmntGA: I must admit, I’m jealous of Les Miles, too! It seems LSU can overcome his coaching blunders & still win! It’s time for Richt to throw the ENTIRE playbook at Auburn! Hate to say it, but his job is probably hanging in the balance depending on Saturday’s outcome! The one thing Georgia has going for them is they’ve generally speaking, been a pretty good road team under Richt. Let’s hope Richt has one more miracle left in his bag!

The thing I’m looking forward to later this morning is Auburn’s response to the latest Cam Newton transgressions. Don’t worry. IF there are any the AJC will post it five minutes before the police report is made public.

Bill, which did you enjoy more, this past Saturday in Athens or the 30 yr Caddy Shack reunion? Seriously, I see that the gopher head still fits but does the body to the costume still fit after all these years? That would be amazing.

That abomination last Saturday was no football game. May as well line men up against children.

Yes there are great Saturdays to be spent in Athens. I think the last one was in 2008 on a rainy day and the UGA faithful sat in the RAIN and watched as Tech trashed the bushes in Sanford Stadium. Uga VII started to die that day and Kentucky just twisted the knife.
The Dawgs(according to History) should win this game.
Good Luck and hope the players get out of the game in good health.
