When A.J. Green did get the chance in the fourth quarter, he was simply amazing — as usual. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Some more thoughts on Georgia’s latest loss to Florida. …
The verdict is still out on defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Until we see at least another season of his work, we won’t be able to gauge whether the lack of progress shown by the Dogs’ defense this season is a result of the level of talent Grantham inherited from Willie Martinez or is an indictment of Grantham’s coaching. But I think it’s safe to say at this point of the season it’s unlikely the light bulb is suddenly going to come on and this defense is going to get markedly better. The problems that have plagued the Dogs all season are still there. Too many times Florida receivers were wide open Saturday, even on plays where the Dogs not only didn’t blitz but didn’t really pressure the QB. How does that happen? And stopping a running quarterback? They don’t appear to have a clue. Still giving up the big play, too. If Cam Newton doesn’t set a bunch of records against Georgia, it’ll be a failing of his own making. …
And was anyone other than Grantham surprised by Urban Meyer going to a hurry-up offense? …
Still, it’s worth noting that the league’s worst defense on third down didn’t play that way Saturday. Florida converted on only four of 14 third-down tries and whiffed on its one attempt to convert on fourth down. …
On the other side of the ball, Mike Bobo didn’t do a bad job with his offensive calls for most of the game, though I still wonder why Georgia didn’t run it more. But Bobo’s decision-making in overtime definitely was questionable. I’ll give him trying the throw to Kris Durham in the corner of the end zone on first down because if the ball had been properly placed, it would have been a touchdown. Still, it was a fairly low-percentage play for Aaron Murray, who hasn’t really looked good throwing into that corner most of the season.
From there, though, Bobo got predictable: a run up the middle that got stuffed and then look for A.J. Green over the middle. And another tipped ball turned into an interception. You don’t have to be a offensive guru to wonder if maybe rolling Murray out on that play might have been a safer choice. And also to wonder whether the best choice of all might have been to just run it three times and kick the field goal. As Florida’s session of OT turned out, the worst that would have resulted in was a 34-34 score and a second period of OT. …
Kids don’t come much tougher than Durham. Not only did he hold on to the ball despite taking a vicious hit that had him coughing up blood on the sideline, he later returned to the game. …
Man, on that one Florida drive even the Gators’ false starts worked in their favor, including one that negated a Bulldogs stop on third down. And another time a sack of the Florida QB was wiped out by another Gator false start. What are the odds? …
As we noted Saturday, turnovers by Georgia — compounded by the Dogs’ failure to take it away when the Gators gave them the chance — really were the difference in this game. First downs, overall offensive yardage and time of possession were basically even between the two teams. …
As my brother Tim noted, thanks to CBS’ claustrophobic camera-work, you couldn’t really tell most of the time whether Florida’s coverage really had A.J. wrapped up or whether Murray was just looking elsewhere for most of the first three quarters after throwing a pick on the first play of the game trying to hit Green. CBS’ Gary Danielson seemed to think Green was open quite a few times when Murray went elsewhere.
But when Murray did go to Green in the fourth quarter, the receiver was amazing as usual. The 3rd-and-10 catch he managed to hold on to despite being hit immediately after he’d laid out for the ball was a thing of beauty (and made ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day Saturday). And the touchdown catch a few plays later in the midst of triple coverage was nearly as impressive. …
Give the devil his due, Meyer knows how to make use of an off week and outcoached Mark Richt. Again. …
I have to agree with Jeff Dantzler of “Bulldog Brunch” that the location of the game in Jacksonville isn’t the reason for Florida’s dominance of the series the past two decades. It’s the same place they played when Georgia dominated the series the two previous decades. But Greg McGarity should make scheduling a bye week before Florida whenever possible a priority. During his years in Gainesville he’s seen firsthand how important that is.
As for the mental challenge facing the Dogs in playing Florida, Richt is probably right in his assessment that the only way to get out of that mind-set is to win a game like this one. Georgia didn’t do it, unfortunately, and that’s going to make Richt’s job even harder next year. …

DawgTired: I still disagree. You’d rather play the “Florida might block a field goal so let’s’ just run the clock out” card, being down 21 to 7 ?? That’s the same as saying, “Because we have zero confidence in our players, we think they’ll screw this up and give Florida the ball back, so let’s just be cowards and take a knee” Your crystal ball is half-foggy. And obviously successful teams, like Oregon, don’t follow that school of thought. Otherwise, it would also say, “There’s a chance we could score, so let’s give it a shot.”

I have to disagree on us being out-coached as the key factor. The D did OK given the fact they were sent back on the field so many times on turnovers. When you’re up against players of star caliber like Rainey, you will give up some big plays if they have enough chances. We had our share of them. Really, it was remarkable we were able to be in the game up until the final play. That’s a tribute to our grit and refusal to give up. This was a game we could have won and that’s different from times past, too. I believe the program is heading in the right direction- the Tech and Auburn games will prove whether I’m right.

i disagree. this one is on our kids. our coaches put a good plan together and generally put them in good situations, and we did not execute. bobo didn’t throw those picks and he sure as hell didn’t fumble that ball. we can (and will) nitpick about this or that playcall, but he must have called some good ones to have gotten 450 yards or total offense in spite of the 4 turnovers that he didn’t commit.

UGA Mark…I don’t totally disagree with your last statement….however, I think Richt was more interested in stopping the bleeding and making adjustments at the half.
I’m not playing any card…I was simply stating that you cannot say that if we kick the field goal in the first half, that we win by 3. It’s not that easy.
I think, sitting at 4-5, that we need to as proud Dawg fans, stop trying to go back and figure out why we should have won or were the better team. We should be prouder than that. I heard for weeks how we were “3 fumbles away” from being a one loss team. Now, it’s “if we kick a field goal we win by 3.” Over time, we are getting a black eye from looking like sore losers. I heard the other day, on a national football radio show, the HOST of the show say “you never beat Georgia…they just somehow fail to beat you.” That is embarrasing.

The reason why an off-week is to Florida’s advantage is because they had time to add “tweaks” to the offensive scheme. It also helped rest a lot of their players who were hurt and were able to come back to play, like Demps. Don’t tell me the bye week didn’t help Florida, because beforehand, their offense sucked. Of course, Murray didn’t help matters, but the extra week off was definitely to Florida’s advantage this year.

Makes you wonder what the offensive and defensive schemes were?? We did not get bet by a better team we got beat by a coach who took inferior athletes and kept his team in the game with good coaching. When you do that you win. WE (CMR) does not do that.

Pro style offense just is not going to win a National Championship these days. Draws and screens and quick outs just can’t overcome these super fast defenses that are built to stop those spread offenses with fast and athletic QB’s. UGA is morphing into an obsolete Big Ten offense that tries to ground it out and hit a long one every so often. Where is the offensive genious that was hired? He is stuck in 1999.

Come on now; Bobo calls running plays, and we get stopped, and you guys whine that he didn’t call enough pass plays. However, he calls more pass plays, and now you whine that he didn’t run it enough. You are being hypocritical and hypercritical. Bobo called a good game. This one was mostly poor execution by our position players. Dropped balls, and bad throws cost us a lot. Tired Dawg points out that we had almost a third of the year’s turnovers Saturday. Turnovers went great during our winning stretch; they reversed on Saturday. Yes, Virginia, turnovers are game changers. The biggest mistake, imo, isn’t measured in the stats, and that was missed turnovers. We had several int and fumbles right in our hands and we blew them. If we simply had caught the balls Brantley threw to us and the Gators fumbled to us we would have beaten them handily. Get off Coach Richt folks. Go back and look at Dooley’s record, or Bear Bryant’s record, or any other great coach’s record and there will be some dry spells. Don’t be fair weather fans, screaming for Richt’s head every time we lose. Bobo is a good OC. My only beef with him is that he lacks a little creativity, and he falls into predictable patterns. I don’t care how good you are, if you become predictable, people will learn how to exploit your team. Bobo needs to watch film from some of the most successful teams and regularly make changes, adding some new looks and approaches. I believe he will be fine. He is an outstanding QB coach imo. Now, stick with the Dawgs fans. Don’t be a bunch of quitters who bail out when the going gets tough. We have a lot of talent, and we have the number 1 team in the country and the cross state rival left. Let’s finish strong–like winners; not giving up and turning on your own family, like whiners.

Don’t know if it was the mental pressure of the opportunity to beat Florida but Aaron Murray started the game being off the mark. I was proud of the way he came back though. Let’s not forget, he is still a redshirt freshman. He is also going to be one of our best. While I can quibble with some of the playcalling, I don’t think that is what got us beat. As far as Richt not have a drive to win, well, no one was saying that when we were winning.

DawgTired: I agree, that was Coach Richt’s position. It always is – to do nothing now and make adjustments later. I can’t recall him in his entire head coaching career ever trying to add any points in the last minutes of a half. Maybe he thinks it’s uncouth. In my opinion, it’s too conservative.
In all fairness, I believe it’s fine to react the way most of us are – Being a die-hard alum / fan means holding that team accountable for the decisions they make, not patting them on the heads and saying, “Better luck next time” just to make us look like we’re somehow taking the higher moral ground. I’d rather be demanding and successful than polite and a loser. Besides, being a “sore loser” involves being harsh towards the other team (although it was Florida, so I don’t at all blame those of you who show your disdain). We’re inflicting the blame and criticism on ourselves. That’s not being a sore loser; that’s being competitive and wanting to win.
I’ve vented enough. Thanks for the discussion. Time to get back to work… Have a good rest of your weekends.

Re the bye weekend: Normally, I totally agree with most of you – that we should have a bye week prior to the Florida game (and before Auburn, while we’re at it–why we always need a bye week before lowly GT is beyond me). But this year, I actually think it was more to our benefit not to have it. We just won 3 games in a row, our team was getting better overall, and our injuries were minimal (at least, I think). We had a lot of momentum going into this weekend.

Buzz,
I agree on Murray. It could have been that they didn’t have him throw at game speed enough last week. He threw very little against UK. I thought that was a mistake–keep him, throwing, growing and in synch. It could have been that he was a little awed by the Gators, since he grew up in FL. Maybe, he watched the film of Jenkins, realizing he is one of the top cover men in the country and he will go in the first round. And, when Jenkins jumped his curl to AJ, perhaps he got intimidated a little bit, and didn’t want to go back his way. (Man, do I wish he would have pumped that one!) I think that was one early and predictable call btw. We often open with a curl or a quick throw over to AJ. Bottom line: he appeared stone cold at the start of the game. He did go back to playing like the real Aaron Murray in the second half. I DVRd the game, and I saw several wide open receivers that Murray didn’t see, so I would be interested to find out how many he thought he missed after looking at the film. All told, though, he is doing great against some pretty good teams–I think he is going to be a great one, if he stays healthy. The Fairley guy from Auburn looks dangerous; we will have to have a great performance out of our O line to win that one, and Bobo better enter that game planning to score at least 50 if we want to have a chance against Cam Tebow.

From the GA perspective, the turnovers could have been worse….
Boykin and Smith both fumbled kickoffs and got them back on lucky bounces.
From the GA perspective, the turnovers could have been better…
2 fumbles by FL in GA hands and they act like WD 40 is on the ball.
1 ball that hit Rambo in the hands…again, WD 40.

Not sure what to say anymore, but objectively as a Georgia Grad, I simply chalk this game up as a loss on the schedule until proven otherwise. Not much left to say other than we’re not going to make a change this year, so we can probably expect another lifeless year unless some changes are made. We knew the 3-4 transition would be rough this year, because if Saban has serious issues in year one of his 3-4 installment than we know we will. Obviously the defense will get another year to get together. Many will blame the defense as losing the game, but many of us are forgetting how atrocious the offense was in the first half.
Others have noted absolutely correctly in stating that our coaches lack a killer instinct that Meyer and Saban possess. 2 timeouts with 1:30 left and a chance to get the ball back with the talent we have on offense and the best wideout in the country?
Richt will definitely get another year and I supposed he’s earned it. The defensive staff will have an entire off-season to get better and I think Grantham probably will be better. Richt should get a new offensive coordinator or take back over play-calling. To think that our offense is good just because we came back from a 14 point deficit against Florida hasn’t been watching all the games this year. We have underachieved across the board with the talent we have. Perhaps Richt can get it together next year, but to be honest I really don’t see it happening. If you can’t even get to the SEC Championship game with Stafford, Moreno, and Massaquoi. And with the best WR in the country and returning 10 out of 11 starters, please explain how we will next year. If absolutely nothing else happens in the off-season we MUST get a new strength and conditioning coach. Van Halanger has been coasting for years and years.

I have seen several folks say that—UGA is no longer a rival. Hah! You need to reconsider. Meyer said this was Florida’s *biggest* win in a long time! He desperately wants and needs to beat Georgia. He said he would *never* get over the beating he took in ‘07 in his book (that is more than a little bit weird imo–it’s a game, and just one game at that). For the entire Summer of the ‘08 season, the Gators had to do reps based on how many yards Moreno had gained on them in ‘07. They were obsessed with UGA, and they still are. Don’t fool yourselves, guys. Urb knows his biggest challenge is beating UGA. Just look at him on the sidelines on an HD DVR–I have never seen him so emotional. He was yelling at his O line to pound our D–to wear them out. He still shows films of Georgia celebrating in ‘07 to pump his guys up with the hate factor. Meyer uses bitterness and negative motivation (hate the enemy), which sometimes works, but can also lead to mental problems, unfortunately. The players were crying over this victory (check the papers). This was as bad as Tech–they go out and by their kids jewelry commemorating victories against UGA for crying out loud! If the Gators beat UGA, they consider it a good season. Trust me, I live amongst them. Florida and Tech have OCD over beating the Dawgs. We are a little naive about this and need to understand that these two teams always bring their best game against us.

I don’t understand that first play called. Why throw that quick screen to open the game? It’s the equivalent to a run play, usually picks up a few yards. This was Murray’s first game in Jax. Open the serious with the running game. And let the 19 year old settle his nerves a little. He’s a good good player, but everyone in that game had nerves going in it.
Bobo should know better. And should have known enough to keep the ball on the ground in OT. I f^cking hate that first down play calling in OT. Wasted play to the back of the end zone to Durham. That should have been picked off.
Just move the ball toward the end zone. It didn’t need to be won in a single play in OT. But if you’re gonna try and put it away, that means you’re almost accepting that you’re going for 3 if you blow the end zone shot on first down. F^ckin’ 3rd down in OT and you throw the ball over the middle? Really? Don’t wanna at least get a shot at a field goal?
