Aaron Murray finally had a game where he looked like a redshirt freshman, but he also led a remarkable comeback by the Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
I had a sinking feeling as they broke for the half in the Georgia-Florida game when Urban Meyer told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson, “You look at the history of this series, turnovers win the game. That’s gonna be the key to the second half.”
At the time, his team was leading 21-7 largely because the Dogs had turned the ball over and missed on at least one take-away. As it turned out, Georgia battled back valiantly in the second half to tie the game up twice and send it to overtime. But in the end, Meyer proved to be the seer, as a tipped ball on third down of Georgia’s first OT possession was intercepted by the Gators, giving them the ball and the chance to win it with a field goal by their backup kicker.
I guess you can say that losing a thriller by 3 points in overtime certainly marks some sort of progression over the past two years, when the Dogs were hammered by the Gators, but when you consider that Georgia was favored this year over a Tim Tebow-less Florida team on a three-game losing streak, the end result doesn’t hurt much less than the two previous losses.
The Gators got off to a slow start in the scoreless first quarter, as has been typical of them this year, but then it was all Florida in the second quarter as the game looked to be headed toward a repeat of the same old tired scenario that has plagued Georgia most of the past decade. Despite their talk this week about approaching the Jacksonville showdown as just another SEC game, it was obvious that the Dogs were playing extremely tight, and the turnover problem that had largely disappeared over the previous three games returned with a vengeance.
It wasn’t just the times Georgia turned the ball over. It was the Dogs’ inability to accept the gifts that Florida tried to give them. It wasn’t a case of the ball bouncing wrong; it was Georgia not covering. One fumble Sanders Commings tried to pick up and run with instead of just jumping on the ball, and the Gators ended up getting it back. Another time the Dogs recovered a fumble only to immediately lose it. And with 24 seconds left in regulation Bacarri Rambo had a potential interception hit him in the hands but couldn’t hold on to it.
The tendency might be to lay the blame for this loss on the fact that Aaron Murray definitely had his worst game. I remember back during the depths of the Dogs’ four-game losing streak someone noting that the play of Murray had been the lone bright spot and wondering, “Imagine how it would be if he had a bad game and played like a redshirt freshman.” Well, that happened in the first half, as Murray was frequently off in his passes (a 63-yard scoring strike to Tavarres King in the second quarter being the main exception) and coughed the ball up on a sack.
But Murray looked sharp most of the time in the second half as he led the Dogs back and Georgia outscored Florida 24-10. One thing you can say about this group of Dogs is that they don’t give up. As Mark Richt noted after the game, even on that interception in OT, they could have just let the Florida defender run it back for a score but the last two Georgia players finally managed to force him out of bounds at the 1-yard line. In the end, the Gators still prevailed, but it wasn’t because of a lack of effort on the part of the Dogs.
Not much consolation, though, considering this was the year Georgia looked best positioned to come out of Jacksonville with a win. Facing Trey Burton another three or four years isn’t a very heartening prospect.
I’ll be back Sunday afternoon with more thoughts on the game. Until then, feel free to share your views of the latest loss to the Gators.

Wake up and face reality . Do you really think Georgia’s football program has ever been on the level of USC ,TEXAS ,OHIO STATE , ALABAMA and even the stinking Gators. The Dawgs have under achieved this season ,so let’s fire the coaching staff and that will fix everything and the Dawgs will win the SEC and a National Title. Get a damn clue ,so lets go hire a new coach , and in 4or5 years we will be having the same conversation about why the Dawgs can’t compete every year for a SEC and National tile.

Oh yeah, and i’m sick and tiered of all this fire the coaches stuff. it’s not the coaches, you idiots. it’s the principal because he won’t let the best players come to school. the problem is UGA has really tough school classes, actually harder than most of the ivee league schools (those expensive yankee schools). so, UGAs principal will only let in football players that can pass those hard school classes. if we let in all the players that want to be Dawgs even if they wern’t the best at school we would win the national championship almost every year.

WHAT the hell does Florida not winning a title in 95 years have to do with Georgia being a so called national football power. I am not a fan of the swamp lizards and I used to enjoy kickin their butts in the so called glory days under Coach Dooley (1 national title). So smart ass tell all of us who UGA should hire to bring us back to the glory days.I will always be a dawg fan and I don’t need some delusional idiot on the side of the road telling me otherwise .Go play in traffic dipsh#t.

my point is we would be sooo far ahead if evey hs plaer that wanted to play for us could. we have the best hs talent in the country in georgia and have the winning tradeation that makes kids want to play for the Dawgs. The only reason some of the best arn’t coming to UGA is because of how ard the school classes are.

I agree with you 100%. Nick Saban has won 2 NC with two different SEC teams during Mark Richt’s tenure. Coaching plays a HUGE factor. Georgia has the athletes and the resources, but they don’t have the coaching. Bottom Line. LSU…freaking LSU has 2 BSC championships wins. Does anyone doubt Saban could have won a championship had he coached UGA the last ten years?

Maybe Rich Rodriguez will be available next year. How about Jon Gruden ,Bill Cohwer or Jimmy Johnson.More than likely we will over pay for Will Muschamp or Kirby Smart and that should make every body happy until the Dawgs have another bad season.

Simple steps toward developing a top-tier football program:
1) Do not allow thug idiots to play for out beloved team.
2) Stop the academic fraud that is committed everyday.
3) Eliminate player arrests.
4) Hire a coaching staff that disciplines and develops players.
5) Replace cross-eyed, toothless, mouth-breathing fans (like me) with ones who are educated.

Urban Meyer before FL coached at UTAH
Steve Spurrier Before FL coached at Duke
Nick Saban before LSU coached at MSU
Jim Tressel before OSU coached at Div 2 Youngstown State
Stoops before Oklahoma asst at FL
Mack Brown before Texas coached at UNC
These coaches have a lot in comon: no one really new much about them, yet they took down programs to national prominence
The state of GA ranks 4th in National recruiting of highschool Football players
You or I do not know what Muschamp or Smart will do or some other coach what I do know

The Blind Homers are NOT true fans. They refuse to see the facts for what they are.
Blind Homers like 82Dawg would’ve kept Donnan around. They were mad Goff got fired. They of course lie after the fact, because that’s what Blind Homers do.
Mark Richt does not deserve to be the head coach of this football program.
30 arrests in 5 years.
11 arrests THIS year.
2-8 vs. Florida. Can’t even beat the worst of Florida’s teams (INCLUDING the Zook years).
No discipline OFF the field means no discipline ON the field.
He refused to back Broyles Award Winner Brian Van Gorder in his contract negotiations with Adams so he could promote his best friend and TWICE FAILED defensive coordinator Willie Martinez to BVG’s job.
WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT HIS DECISION MAKING ABILITY?
He then REFUSED to fire Martinez while discipline eroded and his program crumbled around him for the 5 seasons prior to this one.
Mark, you talk about Meyer coming in 2005 as a tipping point, but the real tipping point was when Richt didn’t fight for BVG to be fairly compensated and BVG left Georgia angry… all so Richt could hire Soft Willie in his place.
Mark Richt doesn’t deserve to be our coach.
It is HIS fault the program has declined to this point over the last 5+ years.
All you Blind Homers do is add another year or two of decline to the process.
THIS MAN HAS PROVEN HE CANNOT BEAT OUR BIGGEST RIVAL.
What else do you frickin people need???

As much as I hat to say it – I have lost all confidence in this staff.
Time to make a chnage.
I really hate saying it – because we have a great man leading our program – a very good person.
however:
1. Arrest record is embarrassing
2. Our play is embarrassing – we LOST to FRIGGING COLORADO. Look at Colorado before the UGA game and after.
3. Since 2005 – UGA has not controlled it’s destiny in the SEC EAST – we have lost early – and depended on help to have a chance.
4. 2-8 against Florida – The road to the SEC Title is through Gainesville – not Athens.
Yesterdays game was painful – commings trying to be a hero and scoop and score – versus recovering a fumble – that was a 10 to 14 point swing right there.
But at the end of the day – yet another loss to Florida.
Look at RIVALS TOP 150 – how many kids are from Georgia – and how many will wind up going to Georgia. This is also an indication on how our program is preceived.
It’s time to make a change – no need to wait until after the 2011 season.

There are lot’s of things to critize UGA coaching staff, but going for 2 at 21-16 is a call most coaches would make. An extra point still keeps you 2 scores away. At that point in the game, going for 2 is a standard call.

Sometimes firing a football coach is not who is going to replace them, its that the multi-million dollar football coach has failed to perform.
I will never forget that Richt said when he was hired that he knew why he was hired. To beat Florida. He, being from Florida State certainly knows the passion that UF brings out of UGA and our necessary desire to win. As I have always said, if you beat Florida, you will have a good season. It really is the key game.
Saban doesn’t have a problem withUF and now Miss State can do it too…so why can’t we. We pay enough money don’t we?
Now really, why can’t we even break even? I mean 5 wins and 5 losses is average and we can’t do that.

You know, Richt compares favorably with the top college football coaches in the history of the NCAA. The only guys that I can think of that blow him away would be Bryant, Switzer…today, the hot guys are Saban and Meyer, but even those two guys have had tough seasons as of late…I don’t understand the criticism? But, I can go to the Texas and UF sites and see those coaches getting hammered these days too. Really…Mack Brown and Meyer are running two of the top programs in the nation, and they have fans calling for their heads? Makes me feel a little better that UGA isn’t the only school with a few psycho-indulgent fans…

You know something, Bill? For a self-proclaimed “life long Bulldog” your blog is, more times than not, about as negative as negative can get.
This is your blog and you can do with it what you want, I guess. But, c’mon.
You’ve got a little picture of you wearing a UGA cap up there and your by-line would seem to imply that you love the dawgs but…that isn’t really true. Even when they win, they don’t win big enough. They don’t tally enough yards rushing or passing or they don’t score enough points or the play-calling wasn’t good enough or we weren’t tough enough defensively or we didn’t create enough turnovers…and that’s when we win!
I read a lot of stuff written about my beloved Dawgs. And I am not some blind homer that can’t see where we fall short from time to time. I am an alum who contributes a lot of cash to this university and the football program in general. I can see constructive criticism as being an effective tool in teaching/coaching.
But I just can’t stomach blasting these kids that work their butts off to accomplish what it takes to be a student athlete. I also can’t sit still while these arm-chair pundits rail about the terrible job the coaches are doing, without offering rational, objective alternatives as to who their prospective replacements might be, and who obviously don’t consider that a total house cleaning will result in the loss of most, if not all, the recruits we have committed.
If you think the win-loss situation is bad now, how many years will we have to endure mutiple losses before we get back to the success we have had since Richt took over?
We have had a couple of down years back-to-back now. That sucks, I know. But I can’t seem to make myself forget about those 90+ wins we have enjoyed under Richts watch.
Who are we going to get, Bill? I, for one would like to know.
Where are we going to find a new man to take over the helm of this foundering ship?
One with HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE AT A HIGH LEVEL? One with CHAMPIONSHIPS and WINNING RECORDS on their resume? They’re already employed by other schools.
Otherwise, we roll the dice on some OC/DC at another school who may or may not ever become a successful HC. Ever.
Is that what you and all the other experts out there on the fence suggest?
What we had better do is give Richt the opportunity to make a couple more changes on the staff and try to turn this program around and headed back to winning ways again. He has most of the pieces he needs to do that with in place. He just needs to add a couple more of the right sort and we will be up and running again.
Unfortunately for him, he won’t ever be able to do anything right in the eyes of some. You included.

UGA is just a second tier program. We haven’t even sniffed greatness since 1980 while all of our “peers” in the SEC have won NATIONAL titles. And look, AU is poised to get another one. That is sickening. Greatness rotates around the SEC and ALWAYS skips the dogs. Sure Richt needs to be fired, but the truth is the next guy will be just as average or even worse. We will NEVER be nationally relevant. We have taken a beating in recruiting the last two years and we are setup to lose even more recruits to far superior schools following this joke of a season. I’ve been a loyal dawg ever since I knew how but I’m seriously considering hanging this sh%t up.
