Dogs had too many weapons for Vols

Blake Sailors has his helmet yanked off after covering a Tennessee fumble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

That felt good, didn’t it?

The Georgia team that fans had expected to see this season finally showed up Saturday Between the Hedges after being largely missing for four weeks, and put a big-time hurt on Tennessee, thanks to the usually stellar play of A.J. Green, the continuing development of Aaron Murray as a legitimate dual-threat QB, and the Dogs finally flipping the turnover ratio on a major opponent.

Not that we should let ourselves get too giddy about this win. The Derek Dooley-led Volunteers team that Georgia beat Saturday was thoroughly mediocre.

But, hey, after losing to mediocre teams the past two weeks, having a game go the way it appeared like it should go on paper is a major turnaround for a UGA program that was beginning to look lost in the wilderness.

Basically, the die was cast in the first half, which was a game of turnovers, with the Big Orange handing it over on an interception and two fumbles, and the Dogs for once playing Johnny-on-the-spot, snagging the take-aways and scoring when they got the chance.

It wasn’t a perfect game for Georgia, by any means. While the defense played much improved, stifling an opponent’s first drive for the first time in a month and making some big third-down stops, the Dogs still showed themselves vulnerable to big plays, most notably in the second quarter when Justin Houston failed to wrap up a sack of UT’s Matt Simms and the quarterback scrambled away and threw a 38-yard touchdown pass.

But there definitely was improvement all-round, as the 41-14 score would indicate. The revamped offensive line still got jammed up too often and let blitzing defenders get to Murray occasionally, but generally the pass protection was excellent as Murray completed 17 of 25 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns.

Murray also ran for two scores and was actually Georgia’s most effective runner, ending the day with 41 yards on seven attempts after sacks were subtracted. He averaged 5.9 yards per run. His first ground score came on a beautiful 35-yard run after Tennessee completely bit on a play-action fake, and the other saw Murray scramble out of a sack on third and goal at the 7 and manage to hit the goal line pylon with the ball as he was forced out (a video review by the officials finally ruling it a touchdown after Georgia had gone ahead and kicked a field goal on what it thought was fourth down).

Speaking of the running game, Caleb King, who ran 13 times for 58 yards, solidified his position as Georgia’s first tailback, with some tough cut-back runs. Washaun Ealey was less effective, looking tentative early on and fumbling again down near the goal line, though this time it went out of bounds. He had 33 yards on 12 runs.

A.J. was, of course, A.J., snagging a nifty 33-yard pass on the Dogs’ third scoring drive and bowling over a defender to cross the goal line on the next drive, after special teams player Blake Sailors had recovered a fumbled punt.

Overall, it was the sort of day this Georgia team (and its fan base) badly needed.

I’ll be back Sunday afternoon with more thoughts on the game, but now let’s hear what you thought of the Dogs’ first conference win of the year.

Great showing from the dawgs today. I’ve got to be honest though. I am 34 years old, and that might be the worst Tennessee team I have ever seen. Hopefully we can build on this win, i think Vandy might put up more of a fight than the Vols. Can’t believe I just said that.

Aaron Murray is big-time. I’d like to see us work out of the I-formation more than the stretch run that has no lead blocking and generally gets, well, stretched. It was good to see the tight ends back in the passing game. Caleb King showed the best vision I’ve seen in him since he got to UGA. Much better run defense. The next time we cover a wheel route will be the first time. Good to see the kids play with a lot of heart after this last run. That is good coaching.

While I agree with THE TRUTH’s observation about how bad this UT team is, what does that say about LSU? How is LSU the 12th best team in the country when they clearly should have lost to this very same UT team in Baton Rouge?

Murray and skill players on offense were solid, O-line still seems out of sync and not physical – run game should have been better. D-line and LB’s were better, but D-backfield still seems lost. Red zone offensive play calling still needs work or better blocking. Regardless if we can continue to hang 40+ on teams we have a chance to win. Hate to look back, but not having AJ for the first four cost us wins. Keep the faith – GO DAWGS!

I’m already hearing so many saying we are back……..Really??? We did play better today, but against who? I’m not trying to bring down the Dawg Nation, but I’m just not convinced after 1 win against a troubled team that we are back. We still have troubles with the D backs, Rambo in particular. Tenn. helped us to look better with turn overs, a bad snap and wanting to run the ball against a team that has been burned big in the air. Until I see some consistancy and a solid performance against a real opponent, I’m not going to get too excited. I was pleased to see us play a full game for once. Looks like we are headed in the right direction, just not drinking the Kool Aid yet. Keep GATA! And I sure hope Richt stays with the full pad practices.

When is Rambo going to cover someone? I know this is his firsst yeaar starting but come on!! Alec Ogletree is a true freshman but we need to get him more playing time to take over that postion. It doesn’t take a skill player to cover a UT receiver 40 yards down the field. You just need to play assignment football. The OL is still a work in progress but we do not have a big time back to make them look better like Moreno made the average OL look good for 3 years. This slide has been in the works for at least 3 years. Still a DAWG at the end of the day but just pointing out the obvious.

On this Saturday there was no doubt UGA was the better team and played like it. No SEC team in recent history has been forced to play the quantity of true freshmen, R freshman and sophomores as UT is playing. Only hope Dooley keeps them together and the team does not splinter and starts to point fingers. Dooley will recruit well and bring in good football players and more importantly good kids. It is tough to say but i like where the Vol program is and where we are headed.

I almost lost it in the game when he fumbled in the redzone, even though it went out of bounce. Ealey needs to be sat on the bench. Well that was certainly more like it. We looked better, but in all fairness UT did look pretty bad. No one will win games with those kind of turnovers. We still have to develope a running game or the more talented teams we face will give us a lot of trouble. I think the key was changing up the O-line. Some of those upperclassmen deserved to be benched (unfortunately). We looked much more complete for it.

Murray looked outstanding. 2 passing Td’s, 2 rushing td’s, 0 Int’s, 0 fumbles. Timing was excellent, when Georgia needed him the most, he played big. Terrific runs, he even had a couple of td’s dropped by AJ & King, should have finished with 4 passing td’s, and 2 running td’s. Green looked awesome. Caleb was sound, breaking tackles, pass blocking, good ball protection.

Houston was a bear all day. Great pick tip by Cuff and catch by Rambo, we needed a spark in the 1st quarter, that was big. Boykin knocked down a pass to the end zone that was a great dive pass defended. Ealey’s gonna be fine. He just has a nose the goal-line when he gets near there, and loses awareness of the football, he’ll fix that. He had a couple of nice runs, and did a nice job in pass pro. Tight ends looked great. Charles had some nice plays, and Aron White looked incredible on the sideline play.

Defense looked sharp. Nice to hold the Tenn team to 14, instead of what, 45 last year with Willie’s defense.

Look at the SEC improvement for defense:
10 less gave up to Ark than 09′, 10 less gave up to SC than in 09′–held SC to 17 points less than Alabama, 30 less gave up to Tenn than in 09. That’s improvement.

“Y’all still ready to fire Coach Richt and hire Kirby Smart at any cost?”

You know RX, I’ve never been on the Kirby Smart bandwagon. He might make a great coach, but no one really knows until he shows what he can do.

As for Richt, today’s performance shows what UGA could have done against other lesser teams, like Miss. St. and Colorado. I think the jury is still out on Richt, but the overall trend is still troubling. I wish him the best, but can’t pretend to have confidence in him anymore. I’d love to be proven wrong.

And one final point: the Gator fans once again showed how utterly classless they are, booing their offense every time a play didn’t work out – during a drive that gave them a come-from-behind lead against a solid conference opponent. I wonder how many of them noticed that they scored 29 points against one heck of a defense.

Whether you’re talking about the team that went 59 years without an SEC title and was put on major probation twice between ‘84-’90 or the team that has enjoyed unbelievable success since the 90s, the fans have never changed. Still obnoxious bores.

Ed, I very disappointed in our coaching staff too. It’s certainly not everyone. I’m talking about all the fair-weather fans that think UGA and Richt are gods and on the national champs bandwagon then after 1loss they start jumping off. After 4 losses they had jumped off the bandwagon completely and taken up torches and pitch forks. No doubt we have problems. If it were me, I’d move Bobo back to QB coach, then if still as he is now, let him go; Richt would resume play calling; we’d get a new strength and conditioning coach who looks like he’s actually been in a weight room. Our guys have been manhandled until Saturday and have blocked like marshmallows. I guess I’d give the DC a little more time though he hasn’t shown me much; and I’d put glue on Ealey’s hands and make him ride the bench with a football glued to them. I’m a big Kirby Smart fan and would love to see him come home someday. I think he’s a defensive genius and will be a great head coach, hopefully at UGA when the time comes. However, even he had a bad day Saturday. My point was, before you knee jerk and shoot the whole bunch and have to reinvent the wheel, make some needed lower level changes and see if CMR is still up to the task. I just get annoyed with the fair weather fans and their vitriol. One more thing, Aaron Murray is for real and I can’t wait to watch him develop.

But there again, I’m not in charge and that’s probably a very good thing.

Ed, I was at UGA in the glory days and playing Fla was like playing Vandy. A win was practically guaranteed. They are much better losers, or were back then anyway, than they are winners. You spoke volumes about what you said about the gator nation and I couldn’t agree more. They really are totally classless and rivaled, possibly, only by Lane Kiffen’s teams.

Wow! Just what the players needed. Hope we are on the right track. There was improvement in almost all areas. Still very poor run blocking. The tackling is still not great. The secondary needs better cover guys. I can’t imagine any other FBS program who would want Bobo as their O cooridinator. CMR needs to call the plays and let Bobo coach the QB’s. Didn’t FSU win 2 national championships while CMR was the O cooridinator there. He knows how to win games and he knows what it takes to win the big ones. He needs to delegate some of the administrative requirements and use that time for making game plans. No matter what happens over the next few weeks…we at least have an SEC W with Vandy coming in…but the Dores shouldn’t be taken lightly. Hopefully the Dawgs will be 3 and 4 next saturday.

It feels good, Bill King ? I guess if you are satisfied with 9-4 as the best as you can do in CMR Season # 10 here.

“after sacks are subtracted” is that because Aaron Murray now has 14 sacks for minus 101 yards ? Do we get to subtract those too ?

Yes, CMR, who raised his hands for TD on the play, kicked the field goal on what he did not think was 4th down. He thought it was a TD. But, he kicked the field goal.

Washaun Ealey, officially, did not fumble that ball out of bounds at the 3.

First Conference win of the year ?

LSU 6-0 was # 12 pre-game, yeah our coach better than he
Auburn 6-0 was # 8 pre-game
Arkansas 4-1 was # 11 pre-game
Alabama 5-1 about # 5
Florida 4-2 is dropping to about # 20
South Carolina 4-1 was # 19 pre-game

Uga has along way to go. and for the most part its coaching. these young men must be coached and motivated to perform at high level. we need a new offensive co for sure. cmr it is your job to prepare these men for battle and if you are not willing to take over the play calling yourself. you should bring someone in. because mike bobo is to predictable. you dont have to fire him just make him the quarterbacks coach. this season will be a failure we all know even if we win out thanks for caoching your tail off. we call the same plays over and over and over give me a break. that murray kid be special with the right offensive co.

Great win for the dawgs..yes we beat a team that is not a great team, but they have played some teams pretty good and hung in therre, so i think you have to give the dawgs some credit for winning pretty convincingly…The more i watch our RB’s the more i realized that what we need is a game breacker type RB that can take it to the house and that can actually break some tackles..I see spurts of that at times with King, but very unconsistant and seems to be injury prone…Ealey his probably thinking too much about his fumbles and just doesn’t seem to break tackles…I know the O-line has gotten alot of criticism, but i’m not sure they are not all the problem..There is no reason that we are having as many porblems as we are inside the 10 yard line running the ball like we are…but overall i saw a great improvement in the dawgs on both sides of the ball and and our fans were great…go dawgs..

Nice win. Was good to see Blake Sailors recover a fumble after a crucial penalty earlier.

Gotta step up in defense of Justin Houston here. Yeah, he missed a sack but the TD was actually on the secondary. Houston’s momentum carried him past Simms — it happens. Although he didn’t get a sack, he got a QB hurry. The secondary is the component that allowed a receiver to bet them deep. Let’s not put that play on Houston.

Aaron Murray is our best player.

He is 2-4 and lost to 2 really sorry teams in Missy State and Colorado. Colorado LOST 26 to NOTHING last night. He won 2 games and both of those games were CUPCAKES. Tennessee has beat no one and neither has Colorado.

He is 14 sacks on the season after 2 more last night.

For all these years, the measure is David Greene won a lot of games as QB.

Never mind, David Greene does not have any of the tools Aaron Murray has.

Now, there is some NEW MEASURE for a Starting QB.

Doesn’t know the playbook.

Has his balls batted down at the line.

Doesn’t know what plays to check out of at the line.

Obviously has not been well-coached here at UGA, because he has a ton of talent.

Has been the only QB to play, even in ROUTS (as foolish is that was last night), yet he is the QB of the

# 67 Total Offense
# 64 Scoring Offense

He is # 82 in the nation worst at being sacked.

Yet, our defense and our special teams are both FAR BETTER than our offense.

Aaron Murray, on the season, has 45 rushes for 102 yards total.

I love the guy, and he is our best player; the QB for South Carolina was FAR BETTER THAN HE, the QB for Arkansas was FAR BETTER THAN HE, the QB for Missy State was FAR BETTER THAN HE head-to-head watching them both on the same field at the same time.

There is no doubt in my mind that Cam Newton is FAR BETTER THAN HE and that Greg McElroy is FAR BETTER THAN HE.

Hit the nail on the head

October 10th, 2010
11:31 am

Bill I think you hit the nail on the head about UGA having too many weapons for Tennessee but should add that it took 6 weeks into the season for it all to start to click. All the run the table talk is a great goal for this team to set but the coaches need to really stress the importance in taking one game at a time. I may be just me but a couple things I though I saw was Grantham more involved and fired up on the sidelines like he was in the first game rather than reserved as he was during the last four, and how good C. King looked in the first quarter then he played very little in the second. Ealey is becoming a big dissapointment. The way he’s playing there is no chance of him coming out early for the NFL as he is hard pressed to even get into the starting lineup without an attitude adjustment. Murray looks to be the real deal but I would have liked to see the backups get some playing time yesterday. By playing the what if game one could say we would be setting at 6-0 now rather than 2-4 if we had started the year with an experianced QB. It was good to see Alabama and Florida go down yesterday. LSU could “luck” their way into Atlanta much like Alabama did into the NC last year. Has anyone else noticed how Lou Holtz beams when SC or ND wins. He makes a body want to puke while he sits up there with his $#!+ eating grin.

Of course I’m happy we won the game with Tennessee yesterday, and as we all know both of these teams are having a down year this year, but a win is a win and I’ll take it. I still think we need better blocking with the o-line for running plays and need to get the talented tight ends more involved. The defense, yeah it showed some improvement, but, it could get better in several areas as well. Don’t think just because Bama lost yesterday that their awesome world of college football is all of a sudden doomed. I’ll give the UGA offense a “B” as a grade on saturday. Finally Bozo for the most part opened the offense up but still tried that stupid sprint draw too many times for negative yards. Defense looked ok against a sub par vols offense. Still played out of position too many times, pass defense is still questionable at best. Too many open guys running down the sidelines. Perhaps Grantham might wana address that at some point or KY and UF are gonna have a field day with us. Our inability to stop the spread option running attack will be our downfall. You are exactly correct and that what has made this year so hard on real UGA fans. We, as fans can see during a game what the problem is and either the coaches are blind or they are that slow in making changes. If we can see what the other team can exploit in their favor the other team can too and they are doing it.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that CMR had a large input in the play calling against Tennessee because the play calling was so much better and because of that the result were much more favorable. The 4th quarter was all bobo but I agree we should not deliberately run up the score against I good guy that inherited a huge problem. CMR showed a lot of class just running out the clock.

Big freak’n deal Bill. SO- UGA beats a team who got beat 48-13 by Oregon – in Knoxville. Should have gotten beat by UAB (UT won in double overtime) – but escaped 32-29 (in Knoxville). In fact – in the UAB game – UAB had 544 yards of offense to UTs 287. UT is a team that is playing 16 freshman (there were 7 on the field at the same time yesterday). And remember, 24 of UGA points came off of turnovers where UGA didn’t have to go very far.
UT is Ranked 96th (yes, 96th) in offense and ranked 77th in Defense – and UGA thinks that requires a “celebration” dance in the locker room??? UGA didn’t PROVE ANYTHING by beating a lousy UT team. SO, UGA – save your dances till the end of the year.

39 , that “stupid” sprint draw is a QB aubible. Always has been , always will be. (one that every team team in the country runs, and we have done so very few times this year) . Its not a call from the bench now, any more that it was when Stafford checked into it a a lot his Freshman year. It’s a bailout, when the guy doesnt see what he wants to see to run any of the options that were send in from the OC. So from the standpoint that Bobo did give his guy a safe alternative, as one of the options, I guess you could hang that on him for not saying, “I don’t what you see”. If that seem stupid, then yes.
