Greg McGarity wants to hear the Redcoats, not canned music. (Georgiadogs.com)

A student representative at this week’s meeting of the UGA athletics board raised the issue of some of the commercials on the Sanford Stadium video board being ill-timed and “killing the atmosphere,” which is a complaint I’ve had this season.

The folks in the booth running the board at times seem completely clueless as to what’s happening on the field, letting promotional spots drown out the Dogs’ pregame “Krypton Fanfare” walk toward the end zone, for instance.

The complaint prompted new AD Greg McGarity to say he thinks the way-too-loud “canned music” needs to be cut back some, too. As he put it, “I’m pretty much a traditionalist. If the band’s there, I want to hear the band playing. I think our fans do, too.”

I’m with Greg. How about you?

AMEN! I’ve been getting tired of this trend of colleges piping music in through loud speakers. And CU was even pumping in a recorded cheer last week! Pathetic and lame.

But, I’ve got to say that the Redcoats need to learn a new song to play on 3rd downs. That funeral dirge thing is nothing to get excited about and about the least energetic thing you could play at a point when the team and fans need to be getting pumped up.

Here's the only motivation speech you need....

The last thing he said to me, “Doc,” he said, “some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don’t know where I’ll be then, Doc,” he said, “but I won’t smell too good, that’s for sure.”

I think we need to wrry about getting the stadium filled before the game before we start talking about lowering the noise level of advertisements. Our student section IS A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The type of atmosphere that we need is like the one I see at all of the other major opponents stadium when I visit them…loud and crazy ALL THE TIME!!!

I’d like to hear more than three tunes the entire game…especially that slow funeral dirge they play. What is that? Sounds like they’re warming up! I’ve been to high school games with better developed set lists.

I’d like to see some action from those guys to get the crowd fired up too. Have you ever watched Clemson or Auburn? Those guys must have physical tryouts for the band…they’re duckin’ and weavin’ the entire game.

Listening to the Red Coats is like listening to Baroque chamber music.

THANK YOU! I hate that crap. Not only does it kill momentum, it kills tradition. College football is about pageantry and tradition, and that is where the band comes in, not the latest top 40 hit blaring at ear blistering decibels. If I want commercialization I can go to an NFL game. College is not and should not be about that! But it is the almighty dollar at work.

I’ve complained to the athletic department last week about this. It is true at basketball games and baseball as well. The artificial noise and “music” is unbelievably awful. And, as someone else said, you can’t even have a conversation with the person sitting next to you.

Canned music is everywhere. It used to just be in dental offices and elevators. Now it’s in the school plays, sporting events, and at CHURCH! That’s the worst. Using canned music to worship the Lord. Man, get a piano and an organ, + a choir. Do you know what it’s called when a singer gets up on stage at church and sings to a CD? Karaoke.

I’m fine with the band getting more time, but like others have said, I wish they would add new material into their repertoire. Aside from Glory, they play all of about 3 songs. Their halftime show selections are usually crap too. Mix it up, jazz it up a little and create a little energy. The past couple of years watching the Redcoats has reminded me of what our team has looked like all year thus far – flat and uninspired.

I don’t mind the Redcoat Band, but I wish they’d stop dressing like Michael Jackson. I realize it’s the whole “military honor” kind of thing, but it’s so old. Does every band have to dress like they’re right out of the Ottomon empire?

I agree we need less canned noise and more genuine fan support. We need more enthusiastic fans in the seats from start to finish. What’s worse the students that drift into the stadium late or the 25,000 alums that leave at the end of the third quarter to beat the traffic on the Atlanta Highway? These fans missed a chance to cheer on a spirited come-back in the fourth quarter of the Arkansas game.

Maybe they should let the bad play football and the football players sing in the stands…can’t be any worse than they have been the last 4 weeks. There isn’t any way Georgia can bet Tennessee…if Tennessee could count they would have beat a ranked LSU team

The main issue in Athens is that the fun stops when the tickets are taken. There is so much focus (and rightully so, it’s a fun thing) outside of the stadium and tailgating. The game is almost an after thought. I grew a Florida State fan and Doak was packed and jumping 45 minutes before kickoff because they were ready to see top notch college football. The tailgating was very good but the game was the best thing.

Good for McGarity for stepping down the artificial noise. Use digital crowd prompts and the fans will yell. Ask Jacksonville State how loud it was when he played Georgia State in the Dome this year:
““I’ve been in the Superdome playing Michigan,” Crowe said. “I’ve been inside loud stadiums, but I had no idea that this number of people could make so much noise, especially down in the bowl. It’s loud. I was thinking about it the whole time.”

Step your game up Georgia fans!

Traditions?
Well, a bunch of lame cultural marxists thought it was a fine idea to change the name of the band from the Dixie Redcoat Marching Band to just Redcoat Marching Band (as if UGA had some connection to the British Army)……how’s that working out?
Our band is getting trashed for having no tradition but Dixie Cups, Dixie Chicks, Dixie Crystals, Dixie Stampede, Winn-Dixie, Dixie Wooten, Dixie State, Dixie-Electric, Dixie Outfitters, etc. are still doing fine.
P.C. Marxist trash always comes back to bite.
