Greg McGarity wants to hear the Redcoats, not canned music. (Georgiadogs.com)

A student representative at this week’s meeting of the UGA athletics board raised the issue of some of the commercials on the Sanford Stadium video board being ill-timed and “killing the atmosphere,” which is a complaint I’ve had this season.

The folks in the booth running the board at times seem completely clueless as to what’s happening on the field, letting promotional spots drown out the Dogs’ pregame “Krypton Fanfare” walk toward the end zone, for instance.

The complaint prompted new AD Greg McGarity to say he thinks the way-too-loud “canned music” needs to be cut back some, too. As he put it, “I’m pretty much a traditionalist. If the band’s there, I want to hear the band playing. I think our fans do, too.”

I’m with Greg. How about you?

Loudspeakers?

Is THAT what’s affecting Bobo’s playcalling?

How about getting rid of the loud music altogether. Atmosphere with the Redcoats during the 70’s and 80’s was great. It would be nice to cut out the ads as well.

I like Greg’s call here. Nice job. We have a great band, so let’s let them play Usher’s hits.

Next, let’s resort to public humilation. The next player to fumble or be arrested will have to be physically punished during a TV time out.

I think we need something to divert our attention from the field this year.

The Buffs had obnoxiously loud commercials, too. WHAT WAS NOT LOUD was our crowd in the 4th qtr. After everybody put their four fingers in the air as if they were going to finish the drill with the team, they went into snooze mode. The team actually stopped Colorado on its own. It had zero help from the UGA fans. Their vocal chords were apparently done. Blame it on the altitude (and maybe also about 10 hours of hard partying). I say fire the fans and get some new ones.

The theme from Krispy Kreme . . . ta da! Coach Grantham will be the one dancing! I am trying to get back on his good side (all sides are enormous) so I bought him some doughnuts for tomorrow’s game. If you see icing on his lips please know that he’s been in the doughnuts – he’s not foaming at the mouth. For $750,000 a year you’d think he could look a little more professional on the sideline.

As a member of Redcoats I feel it is my duty to inform you all that we are told what to play for the most part by the Athletic Association. We try and add to the repertoire every year, but Athletics tells us to play the same old stuff over and over again. They literally have someone telling us at the games what to play.

You want more music, talk to the guys in charge. We’re doing all we can.

Go Dawgs!

Actually, UGA was really bad during most of the 50’s (outside of 1959) and the first half of the 60’s….UGA had 5 losing seasons in the 50’s along with one .500 season. They followed this up by having 3 losing seasons from 60 – 63….

I think the canned music is fine if properly balanced. I personally loved the “Welcome to the Jungle” days at Auburn, and nothing gets me more fired up than those first few opening bars of “Eye of the Tiger.” The canned music is held at a minimum though – accompanying team videos, or just before kick-off when the band is headed back to the stands, or any other time the band may not be in place to play. No commercials except for way before the pre-game show starts or on the VERY slight chance there is time leftover during halftime. Commercial advertisements are pretty limited to the billboards and silent matrix adds in the middle of the seating areas on each side.

That Band Kid, its not YOUR music we are opposed to, its the commercials on the loudspeakers instead of the crowd and band making the atmosphere. Play on, Brethren.

To Von Gannon:

Yes. Trade tickets with some people who actually wanna cheer for this team. And who don’t leave at the first sign of trouble. Where has the pride gone? I know it’s a losing season thus far but grow some damn balls. Sheesh.

Being a little mascot is hard work. I will be doing my very best tomorrrow trying to even my record before the new, inbred, white-a$$ed, 3-eared, weak bladdered dog comes on board. That Deliverance music was driving me crazy anyhow so I am okay with cutting it out. The new dog prefers Barry Manilow so here’s hoping the band can carry it off. I hope you will all stop by tomorrow and say goodbye. I will be the little dog on the field wearing RayBans.

I was looking forward to the Oregon trip, but I agree with the AD on this one. There’s something special about the college gameday atmosphere, and the bands add alot to that. If commercials and canned music are going to drown out the Redcoats, I might as well go to a Falcons game. At least they might win, and I can find a bridge to tailgate under.

I agree with McGarity the advertisements are way too loud. I sit opposite the video screens near the band and it kills my ears at times. I would also like to have canned “GEORGIA” music when the Redcoats are on the field preparing for halftime. The Dawgs score and there’s no fanfare during that period. Get with the program. I’ve also noticed at some schools when their defenses are facing a 3rd down, they have something prompting their fans to get up and make noise, i.e. a bell or gong. I would also like to have a Train Horn sound when the Dawgs score. “That’ll get you going” GO DAWGS, BEAT THE VOLS

It would be nice not just to turn down the volume on the advertisements, but to amp up the band when we play Tenn this weekend. There is nothing more annoying than hearing “Rocky Top” over and over and over. The Tenn band has never wasted an opportunity to play the song during pauses in the game. In the past during pauses in the game, it seemed that the Tenn band always beat the UGA band to the start line. The first band that starts playing is the one that gets the attention. The band director needs to get the band moving quicker and louder. Drown out the Rocky Top.

Fan for 40 years. I don’t mind change and there has been a bunch. Just look at our damn team! Losing to the Arkansas and Missy States of the world. Hell we used to own their Butts. Vince Dooley coached team schooled Missy State and some school out West that has a Rodeo team for goodness sake. Rule #1 you NEVER lose to a team that has a frigging Rodeo team!

I agree the canned music sux. Lets field a damn team then think about partying it up. Teach Ealey how to hold on to the ball then it might be a little more fun watching him dance in the huddle.

Turn down the music. Turn up the Fans and the Coaching!

I’m a little slow to respond, but DeadMike is absolutely right about the Braves. I actually quit going to games because of the “forced” atmosphere. UGA Dawg, you’re kidding about the Michigan band, right? I think they are rated the top marching band in the country just ahead of FSU and Georgia.

The canned music is an annoyance and breaks the rhythm of the crowd and one of the top bands in the country. Auburn was even more annoying playing “Eye of the Tiger” between plays at high decibel levels, but they seemed to cut that two years ago when we were there.

Uh-oh…this Tech fan has never agreed with an UGA AD before…until now.

Canned music / commercials / promos ruin the atmoshphere and are so loud that one can’t even hold a conversation with someone sitting next to you. We’re moving our season tickets at Bobby Dodd Stadium next season because we’re sick of being so close to the dangerously loud speakers. Way to go, Greg!
