Greg McGarity wants to hear the Redcoats, not canned music. (Georgiadogs.com)

A student representative at this week’s meeting of the UGA athletics board raised the issue of some of the commercials on the Sanford Stadium video board being ill-timed and “killing the atmosphere,” which is a complaint I’ve had this season.

The folks in the booth running the board at times seem completely clueless as to what’s happening on the field, letting promotional spots drown out the Dogs’ pregame “Krypton Fanfare” walk toward the end zone, for instance.

The complaint prompted new AD Greg McGarity to say he thinks the way-too-loud “canned music” needs to be cut back some, too. As he put it, “I’m pretty much a traditionalist. If the band’s there, I want to hear the band playing. I think our fans do, too.”

I’m with Greg. How about you?

Remember when Donnan (or was it Goff?) brought in that steroid-addled male cheerleader who ran all over the field before the game screaming and waving a towel? The artificial noise is 10X worse than that guy. Here’s something that will fire the crowd up: Winning.

If they play the advertisments as loud this week as they did last time, I’m never shopping at Academy Sports again.

Canned noise is a problem in ALL sports venues. Just let the crowd make it. Maybe an organist, but otherwise, it needs to GO AWAY NOW! I agree with Mr. McGarity about UGA….the band should be enough….not to mention the 92,000 folks in the stands. End canned noise and do all sports fans (and their ears) a BIG favor.

This is a good call. Glad to see the AD addressing the atmosphere. This has been lacking for some time. It can be A LOT better.

Why should I go to Sanford Stadium (or the GA Dome for that matter) and get hammered with incredible loud commercials when I can do the same at home?
Plus, my hot dogs are a LOT cheaper!

There are too many pointless commercials, yes, that Redcoats

However, The Redcoats should also grow their repertoire to include more current music to get the crowd hyped up. Michigan and Oregon’s bands, who have zero pedigree from what I’ve seen and heard, make us look antiquated when they make a Lady GaGa song better than Lady Gaga does, and we’re sitting here playing the fight song over…and over…and over…etc

I’m from UGA, but everyone of my friend’s who hasn’t experienced an SEC game wants to go to a game. I send them to UT or Auburn or Ole Miss. Way more fun than a boring UGA game. No real traditions other than UGA.
No more exciting out-of-conference away games, no music= no fun. Put McGarity in the nursing home. And hire Kevin Sumlin from Houston before somebody else gets him!!

Maybe this is why Georgia’s home record under Richt is worse than his road record (at least until this year). I’ve always found that to be very bizarre.

UGA Dawgs I agree. I love our band- but let’s add some songs. They don’t have to be Lady GAGA but just some new fight songs or pieces to play would be nice. These are some of our most talented musicians in the state- give em a challenge.

The running backs did some good dancing to that music. What will they dance to now . . . band music? I can feel all the changes taking place. Change you can believe in. No more canned music. No more Oregon – Charleston Southern, instead. After this week, the inbred mascot will take over. I heard the hedges may come down. Shouldn’t they be worrying a little more about what has happened to the program? When that new mascot drops dead on the field there will be some new worries. That will surely make YouTube.

The fans should do a pink out to reflect how the team is playing this year on both sides of the ball. In fact, I think UGA could get more physicality out of the cheerleaders then this pathetic OL and DL.

This is great and all, but what if the band sucks? Sorry, but the Redcoat’s leadership isn’t on the cutting edge of creativity.

And, the Michigan Marching Band has quite a bit of pedigree, probably more than most college marching bands.

I couldn’t agree with this more. I hated when they brought that crap in…I remember laughing at my first UGA/Auburn game at Jordan-Hare when they played “Welcome To The Jungle.” I thought – “wow, this feels like an NFL game. No place for this in college football.”

UGA should post the Rivals.com profile of each recruit who has turned UGA down this year thanks to losing and the lack of discipline at the UGA program as of late. That should get the players attention.

I am with the AD let our band play and the fans cheer! Let me tell you I was in Colorado and their adds and music were too loud and ill timed! Now I did find it funny that we took so many dawg fans out there that our kick off cheer drowned out the Buff fans so the music operators played very loud crap right up til the ball was kicked to drown out our GOOOOOO DAWGS SIC EM cheer! Oh and they proclaimed Ralphie as the # 1 mascot in College Sports! I though SI and ESPN settled that, WE NEED UGA VIII! GO DAWGS!

BTW, I’m with the others that have been very underwhelmed by McGarrity to date. He’s nothing but a throwback in terms of his mentality and management style. Instead of trying to move forward and establish new standards and traditions, he wants to go back to the 50’s and 60’s.
