Mark Richt is at a turning point in his coaching career. (University of Georgia)
Some of you are ready to write off the Mark Richt era in Athens.
I’m hearing this from fans who normally are not quick to call for a coaching change. They look at the downward trend in Georgia’s SEC results since the last conference title and figure the die is cast, even though most concede that Richt’s past record has earned him another season after this one, no matter how badly it ends.
And they’re not looking forward to watching that prolonged scenario play out.
Me, I’m not a big fan of change, as my wife frequently notes. I tend to stick with something way past when others would have bailed, whether we’re talking cars, VCRs, old shirts or football coaches.
I’ll admit, the precipitous decline of Georgia’s football program has me teetering when it comes to the Bulldogs’ prospects under Richt. The recruiting obviously has been subpar for several years, the development of talent has been less than impressive, and the players frequently look undisciplined, on and off the field, raising serious questions about the coaching.
It’s true, a couple of key blue-chip recruits can turn around a program nearly overnight, but as I’ve heard more than one fan say in the past couple of weeks, “Why would a five-star recruit want to come to Georgia right now?”
For me, the most disturbing aspect of it all is the seeming lack of urgency among the players and coaching staff. Facing the prospect of starting out “one and whatever the crap we are,” as Mike Bobo put it Saturday, they still were outhustled in Starkville, for crying out loud!
And yet … if Richt coaches his tail off and somehow turns this season around — which at this point would pretty much require winning out, including beating Florida — it will make for one of those feel-good stories that fans and sports media alike love.
Do I see it happening? Frankly, at this point, no.
Still, I can’t yet bring myself to say the words I heard an ardent and intelligent UGA fan utter Saturday night: “I’m done with Richt.”
A COUPLE MORE THOUGHTS ON THE GAME
I know, I know, it’s like picking at a scab, but I can’t let the Mississippi State game go just yet …
Like, for instance, what was going on with that Georgia drive in the fourth quarter where Bobo not only insisted on continuing to try to run up the middle, but was trying it with little Carlton Thomas, the Dogs’ third-string back. Had even Bobo given up on Washaun Ealey and Caleb King?
It sounds like Richt was wondering a bit, too, as he said after the game, “At times we just called running plays blindly. We were going to run the play no matter what, and there were times where we had success and times where we got hit in the mouth.”
Maybe now Richt will bigfoot Bobo and insist on a change in direction. With the Dogs’ offensive line getting manhandled and the backs not breaking many tackles, it’s obvious that continuing to try running play-action out of the I-formation just isn’t working. Our main running threat is our quarterback!
Perhaps it’s time to go to the spread most of the time with Aaron Murray in the shotgun and let him just make plays, whether it’s slinging the ball around or running the QB draw. Spreading things out might make it a little less easy for opposing defenses to jam the line like they’ve been doing so successfully. And if we make opponents defend the pass first, maybe that increases the odds of occasionally breaking a long one on a misdirection counter play with our backs.
Couldn’t be any less effective than what the Dogs have been doing the past three games. …
As for the defense, I still think the linebackers and secondary will figure out the pass coverage one of these days. But Georgia is as soft up the middle as I’ve ever seen them. With our undersized line, everybody’s going to try to run up the gut against the Dogs. It’s well past time for Todd Grantham to figure out a way to bolster the middle.
The Dogs can’t wait for him to recruit the big bodies he needs up front. By the time that happens, this staff may not be in Athens any more. Time to earn those big bucks now.

Hire Kirby? He’s already turned down the def. job. He’s in a good situation now with a great team. He’d be crazy to come into a situation with alot of turmoil. UGA’s had problems before CMR came. Look back at Goff, then it was Donnan. I don’t know if its politics in the Adm. or what but its deep. There’s always someone who will accept that job but its hard to find the right one. Just because the prospect is a UGA grad. does not mean he will be sucessful. Look back at the ones Bama had. And Tenn. with Majors. I love the SEC and the games but I’m no big die hard UGA fan. But good luck to the dawgs anyway.

I was hoping we would lose this game. I think in the long run it will be good. Richt will now find the strength to make the necessary moves he needs to make. Just as Spurrier did at SC the last couple years, like calling his plays. Maybe God was sending him a message. Don’t ask others, what you can do for yourself!

Ellijay Dog, since we have no running game I could not agree with you more. If I made one more idea, it is time to abandon the idea that we have a power running game. We don’t and won’t, so lets wing it. Play super agressive, throw the ball as many times as Murray can handle, maybe it will open some of the running game.

Logan Gray knows the offense inside and out.
Give him the ball, let him make quick decisions, which will help the o-line. let him make better checkoff plays to running backs, which will help running games, let him use his arm to complete some deep passes, to keep 8 out of the box, let him use his legs in the option.

Defense needs to use the Ark strategy form here out. They won’t face another Ryan Mallet, and they came closer to winning that one than any other.
8 in the box, stop the run, make them pass to beat Georgia.

Bill face it, as I said last week, you love Mark Richt more than you love UGA. Your statements betray you. I’ll never understand why you and the Richt lovers can’t see that he’s done. He’s not getting the job done at any price, much less $3 million a year. He’s a shell of himself because he’s been exposed as a small brained offensive guy. He’s done….say it with me, he is done.

Call me crazy but I really think UGA will probably only lose 2-3 more games this year. Which will make it all the more frustrating when it comes down to making a decision for next year. Sadly, a 6 win season might actually save Richt’s job.

Skipper – When you say “we” what “we” are you talking about? <<<<<>>>> The fact is that CMR has the highest winning percentage of any Georgia coach ever.
Some other moron on this site said that UGA has to decide whether winning 10 games a year is acceptable. (It wasn’t for him). That’s just a moronic statement.
And, quite frankly, I’m tired of this Thuga racist tripe. I’m not one to find a racist behind every rock, but I have to agree that after reading a week of this Thuga stuff, it really is poorly disquised racist comments by ignorant, foolish racists and the AJC should ban the posters.
That being said…….
I think back to the Colorado game back at Sanford Stadium. UGA had stunk the place up for the whole game but had the ball with a chance to win late in the game. NOBODY in Sanford Stadium could even conceive that Georgia wouldn’t win. And sure enough, UGA did just enough to win.
Flash forward to this season. Georgia ties the game against Ark. with the ball late in the game and stalls. Georgia keeps the game against MSU, runs the kickoff to the 50 and stalls. Georgia had the chance to win the SC game late in the game and stalled.
Accordingly, and ignoring 90% of the fools and troglodytes that post on this site, if CMR wants to figure out what went wrong, I would suggest figuring out why UGA stalls this year when it has the ball late in game with the chance to win where in years past, it didn’t.
……………………………………and a one sentence post about firing Bobo is non-responsive (and stupid).
Let’s start with facts. CMR is the longest serving active coach in the SEC. He has the highest winning percentage of any UGA coach ever. He’s won two Sugar Bowls, when even the great VD did not do that. He’s 7-2 in bowl games. But he should’ve beat BC in the Music City bowl, he got stomped by Alabama at home while wearing gimmick jerseys, he got stomped by Florida while wearing gimmick everything. He lost to Auburn at home because he ran up the middle with no time outs and :16 on the clock on a first and goal. He’s been on a downward spiral since 2007. He lost badly to Kentucky last year. He did get ripped off when he didn’t get to play in the NC but instead had to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Penn Wages has had it in for him since the Florida celebration. and finally, it does appear that he has lost control of the team. I remember when VD was going to punish me at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis because he thought I was one of his players. I remember when VD made players who fumbled carry the ball with them everywhere they went for the next week. I remember VD teams who won games that they shouldn’t have because of smart plays. As I’ve said before, the true Georgia fans would cut Richt slack if it appeared that the team had discipline. The morons who think Georgia should be undefeated and play in the NC every year are morons. And the people from other teams who come on this site just to insult other people are perhaps the most pathetic people around. There. I said it.

Ok Jump on Mark Richt, Like most Georgia Fans at some point I;ve been ticked off enough to say good bye to him to, but “Not so fast my friends”. Saturday night I saw a Coach fighting for his life, his Job, and more importantly UGA. What I didn’t see was a Asst.Coach and the majority of players(Including the whole O Line) have a clue! Let me start with Washaun Ealey: Young Man right now your clueless(Talented) but clueless. You consistently miss blocks, lack second effort, and show you lack an overall appreciation of the game. To the Receivers, with the exception of Durham, (TE’s excluded) you look like your waiting on A.J. Green to not only comeback, but to tell ya’ll what to do when he comes back. Marlon Brown A 5 star recruit ( what a joke) is lost, Rantavious Wooten is not being used by BOBO(We’ll get to him Last) and King although talented lacks heart in the middle of the field. The O Line simply put, You guys are pathetic. Don’t blame Richt! This is One Man, and he can’t do it all. Defense, Has anyone worked out during the off season besides Justin Houston? The Front 3 look weak and have gotten blown off the Ball so often it’s unreal. the LB’s are out of place, weak, and look lost in the run game. They, with the secondary can’t tackle, and lack discipline. Mark Richt didn’t do this either. Players have got to want to win, and must commit themselves to be the best, and frankly with the arrest of players for all the drinking, this is truly a group of young men who lack discipline in there activities. Again not CMR’s fault. Coach I can’t and want let you completly off the hook, You must move Bobo to QB coach and bring in a OC now. I’m giving Bobo the benefit of moving simply because of his lineage with UGA. UGA is on a downward slide, and this is with players at Fla, Ala, Auburn, S.C. and Tenn leaving our state for opportunities to play at other schools. Georgia in Georgians mind this is a wasted and sad year, and there growing real short on patience. Coach Richt One final word to you. The Fans love you only when you up, and lately you been sliding faster than a Tsunami. Get it right or know that in 2011 a Mayflower moving truck will take you where you want to go, and I can promise you it will be along way from Athens Ga.!!!

People are finally coming to terms with the fact that the recruits are not as good as they were rated coming out of HS. This team has been very overrated talent-wise for the past few years and now it is showing in their performance. Coaches do not play the game. They can lose games without playing on the field, but for the most part it is the players who are responsible to play to the best of their ability. If the current trend is an indication of the best of their ability then you would have to conclude that UGA has inferior talent. They have been soundly beaten in everyone of their losses by better athletes. It is difficult for people in the state of Georgia to imagine that there is better talent elsewhere. Well, there is and you are seeing it before your eyes. It’s not time to dump Richt. The job ahead of him is extremely difficult on multi-levels. Better recruit assessment, better coaching, and discipline like you wouldn’t believe. The athletes need to focus more on their calling and on their classes, let the other students party. THE PARTY IS OVER!

The bottom line is ga need to get better coaching, starting with a OC who can make calls to the players advantage. Quick slants, WR screens shovel pass to the rb a WISH BONE!!!! something to open up the offense and keep the defense guessing, Bobo best coaching came last year against SC and every since it has been bottoms up! Coach Richt will be at ga another year or two, its up to the coaching staff and bulldog nation to stand behind coach Richt.

Why don’t you address the number of offensive lineman from the state kicking your butt for other teams. You can start with James Carpenter, Chance Warmack, Jujuan James, Byron Isom, Maurice Hurt, Ray Dominguez, Terrence Campbell, Rokevious Watkins, and A. J. Hawkins. And those are just the starters. What about the young athletes from the state that are being groomed as we speak to kick your butt in the future. James Alexander and Trevino Woods at Kentucky,. Ed Christian at Auburn, and Duvon Milsap at South Carolina. And I promise you there is no way the stud in Moultrie, Xzavier Ward, ends up at Uga. But beyond all this lost talent , is the incomprehensilble failure of Richt and Bobo to fairly and impartially evaluate CAM NEWTON, and go after the kid. Not only did we ignore a legitimate Heisman Candidate, we unwittingly allowed a major rival to gain his services! This alone is, in my opinion, reason to dismiss Bobo and possibly Richt.

I know all the Dawg fans could really care less about what a stupid Tech fan thinks but, im gonna put it out there anyway. Im die hard Tech all the way but I have “state pride”. I pull for Georgia at all times except when they play Tech. I pull for Ga Southern and now Ga state as well. Mark Richt is a good coach, he just doesnt have that “killer” instinct. I for one am very happy with Coach Paul Johnson but sometimes I wish he didnt have as much of the killer instinct that he does because it sometimes puts us in bad situations, anyway back to Richt. I think he has done an excellent job at UGA, especially against us!! I dont think his head should be on the chopping block like so many have said, he needs a new OC, Bobo just has no clue what he is doing from my view point. Another thing, stop recruiting the highest profile players without taking into account there personalities. When you get the best of the best you have to many players playing “me” “me” “me”, instead of players that put the team first. The thing that bothers me most about Richt is his double standard. He just kicked this redshirt freshman off the team for his arrest Saturday night (a guy that was not even travelng with the team), yet a starter like Washaun Ealey gets arrested on a similar charge and gets suspended for what, one game, thats a freaking double standard. If your gonna kick one kid off the team for an arrest kick all of them off for an arrest. If that had of been Aaron Murray, Caleb King, AJ Green etc., they would be sitting out one game or a half a game, thats BS! Richt needs to toughen up and discipline his team more. He is good at what he does, he just needs to grow the BALLS to fire BOBO!! A good OC and recruiting some kids that feel its a priveledge to play at UGA instead of a right will turn the program around. Best of luck to the Dawgs this season until the end of November.

I’m a Bama fan but have followed all SEC teams. It’s really sad to hear all the venom directed toward Richt after what he has done for Georgia. Looking at him on the sidelines, it appears that for whatever reason, his heart isn’t in it anymore. I don’t see him as a guy who would stubbornly remain at Georgia with the fan base situation turning ugly against him. IMO by virtue of his record he deserves another year if he wants it. If he can’t turn it around I think he will eventually do the honorable and classy thing and step down voluntary.

this is a long one, so sorry to all…
bill, i tend to agree with most of what you’ve said here; people much older than me seem to have very short memories when it comes to our dawgs, and what it was like before CMR. he’s had a lot of success and i’m not ready to say he’s somehow forgotten how to coach in the last couple of years. i do think the stability he has given our program has turned somewhat into complacency, and that’s a big concern. but i don’t think screaming for his head (or all the coaches’ heads) 4 games into the season is the thing to do. i’m as frustrated as anyone on this blog, but we need to see where we are at the end of the season before i’ll form an opinion.
having said all that… it’s obvious that we’re underperforming on the offensive side of the ball and have been all year. it looks to me like our “criminally underachieving” offensive line — not playcalling — is at the root of our problems. if anyone should be fired tomorrow, it’s CSS. those boys haven’t moved anyone all year, and it’s a crying a** shame. now i’m not exactly defending bobo, but i don’t think he’s as much to blame as lot of these other folks.
the main thing i want to see in boulder is toughness, urgency, focus, and aggressiveness. the rest of this season has got to be about little things, about process, about finishing the drill — about doing each thing the right way, every single time. forget winning, forget losing–worry about this play, and then the next one. this is what saban preaches to his kids and i think it’s dead on. i’m hoping CMR can find a way to make it resonate with our kids; if they can’t, we need to find someone who can.
but, i guess my major point is that it we need to look at the whole season before we can make that assessment in a reasonable way. you don’t fire a coach in the middle of the year for the same reason you don’t give out a national championship in the middle of the year. so i’m supporting CMR, his staff, and his players until this year is done; that’s the appropriate time to reevaluate.
like the rest of y’all, i want to see the bulldog team who took the fight to a good arkansas team in the 4th quarter in athens. that showed me that these boys can put it together, and that they’re dang good when they do. CMR has earned a little more patience over his wildly successful 10 years at UGA then we’re giving him now; so let’s get off the ledge, put our guillotines away, and see where we are in december.

SMITTY
Give Caleb the ball in the Red Zone ?
How in the hell do you do that when on the entire season, he has felt like playing the game of football here he calls a “grind here at Georgia” 20 plays ?
The season is OVER now.
Caleb King 19 runs for 70 yards and 1 whole damn catch the entire season for 4 yds
Caleb King has 1 TD on the entire season.
Caleb King on the key play of the game looks at 2 defenders between him and soon to be knocked almost completely out Aaron Murray. 1 inside. 1 outside. Caleb King determines to LET THE GUY GO RIGHT UP THE GUT, then turns and looks as Aaron Murray is sent flying into LA LA land.
We don’t know how to coach the players to hold onto the football because the running backs’ coach was a wide receiver for us, one who got suspended for drugs multiple times by Coach Richt. We don’t know how to teach the players to block because the running backs’ coach was a wide receiver for us.
Now, we have a former running back who was great. He is coaching wide receivers. Makes a hell of a lot of sense, when you look at the results and their recruiting.
The Tight Ends’ coach is a former Quarterback.
The Offensive Coordinator used to be the 1-year Quarterbacks’ coach at JACKSONVILLE STATE, whom Coach Richt STOLE HIM FROM in 2000.

Huh ?
Now, that he can play in a game finally now that the damn season is freaking over, how does that change anything ?
He had 88 yards against Alabama in 2008 as a freshman. We gave up a 31 to nothing score at halftime.
He had 91 yards against Florida in 2008 as a freshman. We gave up 42 consecutive points in this game too, and scored to the polite clapping on the sidelines by Florida players like there were clapping like little polite little old ladies. We lost 10-49.
He had 4 catches for 64 yards against Georgia tek in 2008. A team who is not even ranked 2008 had they not beat Georgia. And, we LOST that game too.
He had 4 catches for 52 yards vs Okie State in 2009 and we LOST that game as well.
He had 5 catches for 100 yards vs LSU in 2009, and we LOST that game Smitty.
He had 8 catches vs the vols in the next game and we were BLOWN OUT 19-45.
He had 50 yards against Florida and we got BLOWN OUT 17-41.
He could not play vs Georgia tek and we beat Georgia tek 2009 WITHOUT him for the only meaningful win since beating Auburn in 2006.

With all due respect, I really do not understand where some of you are coming from with this whole “don’t blame it on the coaches” thing. I am not a blood-thirsty reactionary. In the 10 years of Richt’s tenure, I’ve never screamed for his head. But to say that we’re improperly blaming it on the coaches is just plain wrong. Great coaches make great players. Great players make great plays. That’s how coaches like Nick Saban bring a floundering 6-7 Alabama football team to a 14-0 National Championship season in a matter of just a couple of years. Great coaching is how other programs have risen to prominence even without the blue-chip recruiting class that UGA brings in every year.
No, the coaches aren’t the ones making the mistakes on the field, and some things (like the new defensive scheme and a freshman QB) can’t be overlooked. But if Saban can win a national in championship in 3 years and Meyer can win one in 2 years, there’s no reason why we can’t win one in 10.
For the record, I haven’t yet taken a position on whether Coach Richt should stay head coach. But for sure Bobo has to go, and some major revamping has to be done from the inside out. I bleed red and black, but I honestly do not believe we can win a national championship under our current regime. 2008 proved that.

“I’m tired of this Thuga racist tripe. I’m not one to find a racist behind every rock, but I have to agree that after reading a week of this Thuga stuff, it really is poorly disquised [SIC] racist comments by ignorant, foolish racists and the AJC should ban the posters.”
I don’t even know what color the players are. But, I damn sure know this. Coach Richt’s recruits are # 2 ALL-TIME in the FULMER CUP for the most ARRESTS / SUSPENSIONS.
“CMR has won two Sugar Bowls”
I am so impressed that Coach Richt in 2 years when he BEAT NO ONE ALL SEASON LONG BOTH YEARS, could go to the Sugar Bowl and beat : (1) a 5-LOSS Florida State team who ended up # 24 in the Final AP Poll and (2) Wait for it now, Hawaii, who ended up # 19 in the Final AP Poll. NEITHER of those teams beat a SOUL under God the WHOLE ENTIRE SEASON EITHER. Those were WORTHLESS bowl games, both of them against NOBODIES. In fact, what Coach Richt has done is to beat NO ONE in the Top 10 Final AP Poll in ANY bowl game, ever. And, you come running in here to tell me how great he was in Sugar Bowl games. B. S. Pure unadulterated B.S. If his 2 Sugar Bowl wins are so God Wonderful, why did you then say this sir ?
“He did get ripped off when he didn’t get to play in the NC but instead had to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.”
Sounds to ME like you are AGREEING WITH ME that the 2 Sugar Bowl wins you BRAG ABOUT were BOTH dud games.

Not UGA on the National Stage playing a big damn bowl game. We haven’t won ANY of those under Coach Richt, which is WHY YOU said “instead had to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.” Make up your DAMN mind, sir. Your intent in making this statement that we “had to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl” is succinct and to the POINT. It was a DUD of a damn game against a NOBODY football team by a football team who beat NOBODY all year against a football team who beat NOBODY all year long either. The same is true about the 5-Loss FSU Sugar Bowl Game too, a complete and utter afterthought on the NATIONAL STAGE by 2 teams who beat NOBODY all season long.
Those are the TWO MOST CRAPPY SUGAR BOWL GAMES OF ALL-TIME.
“He did get ripped off when he didn’t get to play in the NC” Let’s see now, YOU THINK Georgia should have played for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in 2007. 2007, we beat a 4-LOSS Florida team who was the DEAD LAST WORST Urban Meyer team. Who else did we beat in 2007 ? NOBODY. Absolutely no one. Who did we LOSE to ? Well, let’s see, there was 6-6 South Carolina WHO DIDN’T EVEN PLAY IN A DAMN BOWL GAME who beat us WITH KNOWSHON MORENO AND WITH MATTHEW STAFFORD.. And, then there was the NEXT SEC EAST game, when at that point we HAD ALREADY LOST TO EVERY SEC EAST TEAM IN A ROW CONSECUTIVELY, and WE LOST to a HAPLESS vols team to make it 6 SEC EAST TEAMS IN A ROW CONSECUTIVELY TO BEAT COACH RICHT. On a side note, we have NOW LOST 5 of the last 6 AGAIN now this year and last year. But, let’s stick with your B.S. about 2007 that Georgia is the NATIONAL DAMN CHAMPION.

2007 LSU lost to two 8-5 pretty darn good football teams in Arkansas and Kentucky; and, LSU BEAT South Carolina AND Tennessee BOTH. But, our SEASON was over early 2007 while you sit there COMPLAINING that we had to play LOWLY HAPLESS HAWAII in our big NATIONAL STAGE Sugar Bowl game. LSU beat 4-Loss Florida in 2007 who was # 13 in the Final AP Poll. So did we. LSU beat Auburn # 15 in the Final AP Poll. So did we.
NOW HERE IS WHERE THE DIFFERENCE IS.
See if you can COMPREHEND THIS please ?
LSU beat # 9 Final AP Poll Virginia Tech.
LSU beat # 5 Final AP Poll Ohio State.
LSU won SEC when 5 of the Top 15 teams were SEC.
Georgia won in the DOWN SEC in 2002 when there was 1 only other SEC team ranked in the entire Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. LSU did it in 2007 with 5 of the Top 15 teams in America from The SEC. LSU was a LOT BETTER FOOTBALL résumé in 2007 than Georgia. By a LONG SHOT better.
EVERY POLL IN AMERICA SAID LSU had the BETTER season 2007.
And, YOU come running in here that Coach Richt
GOT
JOBBED.
