Dogs lost this one in the trenches

Tavares King scores, but it was too little, too late. (Associated Press)

There’s no point in dancing around it. Georgia just doesn’t have a very good football team this year.

I know, some will point to the first half, when UGA moved the ball pretty well between the 20-yard lines and had 100 yards more of offense than Mississippi State and will say Mark Richt’s Dogs beat themselves. And for that half, that’s true. Had Washaun Ealey not committed yet another goal line fumble in his bid to be the Jasper Sanks of this era, and had a terrific catch and run by Kris Durham for a touchdown not been negated by a holding call on Marlon Brown, Georgia would have led 14-7.

But those mistakes were made. And many more, as the game went on.

However, in the second half, it wasn’t a case of Georgia beating itself. It was, unfortunately, the maroon Bulldogs delivering the beating to both of Georgia’s lines.

The UGA defense couldn’t seem to get off the field in that interminable scoreless third quarter, as MSU continually ran it up the gut. As Fox Sports South analyst Tim Couch said, Georgia knew what MSU was going to do, they just couldn’t stop it.

And on offense, playcaller Mike Bobo went strangely conservative in the second half, trying in vain to establish a running game behind our misfiring, criminally underachieving offensive line while eschewing the shots downfield that offered Georgia’s only real hope until the game was out of reach. And all this amid a shower of penalty flags that unfortunately were deserved. (Can’t blame this one on the Dogs’ old nemesis Penn Wagers.)

The head coach, who noted after the game this “is new territory for me,” pretty much summed it up when he said Georgia has failed across the board as a team and “until we get it all together, we’re not gonna win.”

September isn’t even over and the Dogs already are not only irrelevant in the SEC East, they’re the worst team in the conference. Even Vandy has a conference win. At this point, it’s beginning to look like Georgia’s streak of 13 consecutive seasons going to a bowl game might even be in jeopardy unless Richt and company are able to turn things around.

Yes, A.J. Green will be back next week. But with the Richt era Dogs having sunk to new Goff-ian depths, I’m not sure that will be enough.

I’ll be back Sunday afternoon with more thoughts about what went wrong, and where the Dogs go from here.

Can someone tell me why we’re the only team that still sticks to the i-formation and not do anything else??? There’s no imagination in this coaching staff whatsoever! Need to pull the plug on Bobo b/c he’s using the same plays he learned when he played. MIX IT UP, DO SOME OPTIONS OR SOMETHING! STOP USING THE I-FORMATION FOR ONCE!!!!

Offense wasn’t the problem during most of the Goff era. It was defense; Goff’s Georgia teams couldn’t stop a mid-level I-AA team. Unfortuately, Richt’s recent teams have proven to be inept in both.

Calling for an assistant coach’s head is just baffling to me. The buck stops with Mark Richt, and he isn’t getting it done. Period. He replaced HIMSELF with Bobo because he wasn’t getting it done as a playcaller, either. How soon we forget.

Aren’t running backs as small as Carlton Thomas supposed to be shifty? Mark Ingram is lighter on his feet than the 140-lb Thomas. Caleb King is a good back, but Ealey and Thomas are awful.

McClendon and Bobo need to be shown the door ASAP.

And I’m starting to lose confidence in Richt as the man to lead this program. As a team, we are weak, small, timid and interminably dumb. A terrible, sad day for the Bulldog nation.

im a firm believer bobo should get fired. he has 2 plays: run up the middle and throw deep. wht about the screen to the fullback!? it got a first down all but 1 out of 4 times we ran it! or the short passes to the TE’s we ran in our last drive that worked so well! we also lost the turnover battle. MSU fumbled 4 times and threw 2 INT’s! we onlt got one of those!!!! i have to say though, dont blame ealy for that fumble. he got all sense knocked outta him. how many of you can honestly say you could hold onto the ball and maintain common sense after a hit like tht. id be suprised if he knew his own name after that. all aroun though……….we played like crap.

This is getting old… The same ole play calls… same ole results. I for one am getting tired of mediocre, and want titles. So much for this veteran offensive line, as we cant even open holes for the backs, no tight end play, no pass rush, etc. I just think it is time for some changes and it starts with the head coach. I mean.. how long do u wait to get results? Ten yrs in this league and all we have to show is 2 sec titles, when Meyer has 2, Saban has 1, and Miles has 1. Just very frustrated and no end is in sight.

Good job against MSU today, you didn’t disappoint. We now have two common opponents and I look forward to chatting with you guys in the future- though most of you will probably never check the AJC sports section again until next summer when you again declare that you are “dark horses for the national championship”. I’m too exhausted watching UGA football this year to list all of the problems. My biggest worry — UGA didn’t play with heart in the second half. If the players give up — it’s going to be a long season. Even Richt seemed to give up going for it on 4th and long deep in your own territory late in the game. If you’re going to do that — you at least need to try a trick play or something that might work. I guess the best thing that can come out of this season is that we end up cleaning house with the coaching staff at the end of the year. I want a team of professional coaches coaching UGA next year. And no — Muschamp or Smart aren’t the answer. We need a June Jones type of coach. All good things must come to an end, and the Richt era is over. The real 82Dawg (not the imposter) is signing off for the rest of this season. I’ll be back next season. .

Folks, as you all know I’m one of the best coaches in college football. When the SEC was down in the early part of last decade, I ruled. Even better, I’m one heck of a terrific guy and a devout, pious Christian.

My only drawback is that I surround myself with incompetents. That includes players, coaches, and administration. I just can’t help it. Unfortunately, some misguided persons on this site have uttered the unthinkable – that I might be the problem.

Silly fools. I will pray for them. Now excuse me while head to the press conference and blame my players’ execution for our latest uninspired, sloppy loss.

Bobo play calling is the reason we are losing. He always puts Murray in third and long!!! Murray will not make it the rest of the year without getting hurt!!! There is no way!!! Murray is our play maker and he is handcuffed!!!! We are still thinking we have a good offensive line!!! It wasn’t even good last year. Just look who’s defense we ran on last year!!!!! Searls needs to head out the door also!!! He has had experienced lines 2 years ago and how did that turn out? If Richt doesn’t start calling plays this week he can take his butt out of Ga!!!!!! This program had went downhill since he quit calling plays!! Bobo will never be anything but a qb coach which he was pretty good at!!! Still a DAWG but this is just pathetic!!!

I will never give up on my Dawgs…but I’ve given up on this coaching staff.

In the last 12 months, we’ve had more arrests than wins.

I think this is direct reflection of Mark Richt and his staff.

They recruit the players; they coach the players. They are responsible for the players and the program. That’s why Richt clears $$millions.

At this point, I can not see how he will turn things around. I hope I’m wrong. I really do. I hope we pull a late season surge and become bowl eligible.

Regardless of how this season ends up, I think Richt and his staff gets another year, but I hope AD McGarrity lays down the law. It’s one thing to lose when you have a freshman QB who isn’t playing well, but he’s been the strength of the Offense. It’s one thing when you have the occasional defensive breakdown because of a new algnment, but we’ve seen too many missed tackles, arm tackles, and players just not making plays. On both sides of the ball, the players we should be depending on because of their supposed strength seem to have spent the offseason buying the press line and not working; at any rate, they have not performed.

And that seems to be a team cultural failing. I notice Alabama seems to be working hard despite their recent success. I wonder why my Dawgs can’t seem to do the same. You can blame the OC, the DC, the O-line coach.

I blame the man who sets the team culture.

But I do hope he turns things around.

I of course I’ll be supporting my Dawgs win or lose.

But tonight, it seem painfully clear the CMR has to go.

PS – I know people will point to AJ Green and his suspension. Let me say, apparently he’s 2/3rds of the player we thought he was. At least, he will only play 2/3rds of the games this year. And while we may whine about the rule, it’s still the rule, he let his team down.

But again, who recruited him? Who sets the culture? Something led him to think he should sell that Jersey. And regardless of whether you think we would have won the SC or Ark games with him, he wasn’t there. Bottom line.

No UGA team should ever have more arrests than wins in a single year.

I’m sick of this.

Mark Richt must go.

Sorry for rambling. I hate the word. Reminds me of Tech.

Time for a change in Athens. From the head coach, to the OFFENSIVE style of play.

Wanna be successful with the CURRENT group? Stop trying to run between the freaking tackles 20 times per game. SPREAD the field, play 3-4 wide, use SHOTGUN more, stop using a FB all the freaking time, run with 1 back or empty field, use the short passing game if need to be to help MURRAY.

the problem is we have players that don’t fit the freaking style of play on both OFFENSE and DEFENSE.

to make it worst, play calling has hit an all time low with BOBO.

It’s tough to be a UGA fan right now, which I still am but I’m not going to blindly support richt and bobo when the team is not showing improvement and getting progressively worst, esp in SEC play. grantham doesn’t have the personnel to run the 3-4…so why is he RUNNING it? Use a defense fitted for what you have…darn it’s frustrating watching this bunch not being able to stop a simple offensive play that MSU ran all night.

Please do not keep telling me this is a rebuilding year and we should expect to get our butts handed to us each week. This is the tenth year of this coaching staff and the coaches are the ONLY ones to blame for a freshman QB in charge (and he has done a damn good job under the circumstances of being hampered by the ‘best OL in the country’ and playcalling that is terrible and then getting thrown under the bus by the guy who is sending you these terrible plays!).

Thank goodness their QB couldn’t pass well and their receivers dropped passes because our secondary was out of position and confused much of the game. Rebuilding or injuries or penalties…let’s quit with the excuses and admit we are not a very good football team today.

Oh, and BTW, I never, ever, ever want to hear my head coach say it is a tough league and we can never expect to win them all. While that may be a true statement, I don’t want to hear it from my head coach. I want him to expect and say he expects to win them all every year! While other programs are on the rise, UGA is becoming an afterthought. The head coach needs to step up or step out. Get on Bobo’s butt. If he’s not getting it done, take the play calling away from him. Quit putting Murray in 3rd and long. Helluva way to break in a new quarterback.

I like Richt, but I must say that this GA team is awful. When your RB fumbles the ball –then LOOKS at it instead of securing it –THAT’S COACHING (or lack-of). When your cover-team doesn’t pay attention to the returner to GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY–THAT’S COACHING (or lack of). GEORGIA has NO DISIPLINE, NO UNITY, & NO Conf wins. They all go together, and until Georgia gets these together, it won’t win.

This was a total embarrassment from start to finish. What is it with that idiot #3? The football was less than a foot from him. All he has to do is make one football play, one, for a touchdown! How did this ignoramus get into college. Oh. I forgot. It is UGA also known as Thug U! Completely unspirited debacle. Enough to make every true Bulldog fan outraged. I AM! Very much so. mdawg , UGA still has had excellent recruiting classes –if you believe the recruiting rankings. Point being that even a top 12 or top 15 class is still better than SCar, ARK & MissSt. We can go back to last yr & thoow KEN & TENN into that if you’d like. Bottom line is Richt is responsible for the coaches that recruit, so it UGAs’ coaches fault if they don’t have the players they need.

Again, I hate to say it and man…. I hate to jump on the band wagon of ” Fire Mark Richt” but gees, year after year since he’s been here we have had a top 10 recruiting class and cannot produce, except at the onset of his hiring. Everyone on these blogs and even the folks that know more than us continue to suggest that Richt’s success has come from Donnan’s recruits. Even after Mark came to Athens, we continue to pull in a top recruiting class but what have they contributed to the success at Georgia? Furthermore, these top recruits that we pull, go on to be big time NFL picks. I have to believe that our issues are coaching related. Yes, Bobo was one of those shining stars back in the day but, is he truly an offensive guru? Me thinks not. With the new hire of our AD and the success that he’s sustained while at Florida, I think that maybe a change is warranted and probably going to happen soon. Let me ask this… have we ever been a year after year power house throughout the country? What we do have at Georgia is spurts of success and the true desire to be a National contender but we are falling by the wayside. I want and I mean REALLY WANT that success for Georgia but I’m not getting that good feeling with our current staff. I like Richt as a person but think at this point that it may be time to start looking elsewhere. I love my Dawgs and UGA has been a part of my family since my father played for Wally back in the 50’s – win, lose or draw we are Dawgs but desire more out of our program than we are seeing right now.

I really think that the AJ situation, not just him not playing, but letting down his teammates really screwed this team. They look like they needed his playmaking ability. He really let this team down. Not only that but the coaches look like they didn’t have a plan B either.

I agree. Now I do agree w/those that have been saying for the past 2 seasons about getting rid of all the coaching staff.

Remember, the sec road record Richt had? It was outstanding, and now we just lose at home and on the road.

I saw Grantham on the sideling calling defenses w/his arms flapping, doing all kinds of girations. Thought I would see different defensive schemes and blitzes but all I saw was the same thing pretty much. Four man rush w/little pressure. Players seemed to be out of position, especially outside lb’s and safety coming to quickly on run support early in game where a few quick outs passed them by.

Bobo and Grantham showed me nothing in way of improvement nor imagination.

Let’s talk defense for a minute. Grantham promised us an aggressive, take no prisoners defense. After the last 3 games, I saw nothing but panic out of the players. The switch to the 3-4 has not improved the defense, in fact it is a lacking scheme. Lakatos coaching the secondary must realize that Rambo is not a football player, that our corners are small and ineffectual and he has no solution for using the backups. Football almost always comes down to coaching. We spend so much time worrying about recruiting, we lose sight of that all things being equal, MSU’s defense was the aggressive one tonight, and with most of the players that were not good enough recruits to be considered at Georgia, ditto for Kentucky last season. Grantham will not deliver a top notch defense with players that do not understand their roles with this obvious lack of coaching. So yes, Bobo should be relieved of his duties, but Grantham? Lakatos? Don’t give me the new system garbage or the new system excuse. Football on defense is about fundamentals. These are not being taught. Players out of position is not the players fault, but the teachers of those position players.

Before you throw Richt under the bus and drive over him ask yourself some questions. Did Richt call for the fumble one the one yard line? It happened because of a good hit. Did Richt get called for holding on the touchdown pass? No this was a wide receiver trying to make a block that was needed. The bottom line is that we are now 1 and 3, and that is just what it is.

The only thing I think that is Richt’s fault is his steadfast loyalty to his assistant coaches. Bobo needs to go. Due to the ineptness of the offense to move the ball the defense has to spend too much time tring to stop people. I watched #78 Josh Davis, right offensive tackle for the entire second half and he is yet to make a block or cut down his man. How can our line coach, SS, review the game films and not see this. If we are going to put someone who does not block on the line, I would rather see a freshman out there getting experience and trying rather than what Davis contributed.

Richt needs to replase Bobo and Searles before anything else is done. Get someone who can kick ass and take names and make the offense work.

On a positive note, Murray continues to impress. The kid has real toughness and a competitive drive to win. He seems to play his best when handcuffs are off late in games and we let him run the offense for his game. His game is best when he moves in the pocket and throws the ball to deep wideouts.

We have pretended we are a tough nose football team all year, and we aren’t. Both lines are weak, and the OL is maybe the poorest in the SEC. So let’s not pretend we can run the ball. Maybe we need to just become an overly agressive offensive team. Throw the ball 40-50 times per game. Let Murray run the offense as Murray sees the game. Look maybe that will open up the running game. Stop pretending we can run the ball and pound teams. We cannot, so let’s get the Freshmen QB’s sharp throwers for the upcoming years. What do we have to lose?

It is time for a new coach. The team is an embarassment in the offseason (CMR’s fault, plain and simple), and an embarassment during the season. We lose to Vandy, Miss State, KY… with mostly top 10 classes (a couple have been outside the top 10 in the last 5 years, another sign…). We lose because we don’t play with passion for more than 5 minutes at a time. And often when we do play with passion, we don’t play with brains (and there I refer to the dozens of bone headed personal fouls in the previous two or three years). More often though, in the last 3 years we have played with neither brains nor passion. Finally, we lose because our offense is poorly coached. Yes, we have a first year QB and we are playing with out Green. But we have an allegedly talented and experience OL, the first yr QB was the 2nd best in his HS class, we have two highly touted RBs, and many highly touted WRs and TEs beyond Green. Without AJ, on paper, this should be the 3rd or 4th best offense in the conference. On the field, I think it comes down to Vandy and UGA for last in the conference.

We need a new head coach. I know it means some rebuilding and an off year of recruiting, but it is the almost inescapable conclusion (I say almost because he could conceivably turn it around and earn another year if we win out, or perhaps win all but one, including a win against UF). At this point, the only question is: Who? The Mullen love is interesting for a guy that is 7-9. Chris Petersen is 51-4, and while many of those wins were against the WAC, he has beaten some good teams. And if he can recruit kids to Idaho, what can he bring in to UGA? The big knock is that he doesn’t have SEC connections. So what? Neither did Saban or Meyer, unless I am mistaken. His teams play with heart and brains. Finally, we could go for Smart (though he may have burned a bridge by making a very wise decision to stay in Alabama) or Muschamp. Both have great coaching pedigrees and should be loyal. But neither have been head coaches…

according to rivals.com which ranks recruiting classes, bama has had the best classes the past 2 years..

i gave up on this coach last year.

and just because we cant get the talent out of the state does not mean that we cant go to california (the state that has the best talent, not the most) to recruit.

yes we won with david pollack. and that was when UGA had brian van gorder who was a no nonsense coach. which is something that UGA needs right now.

hmmm maybe brian van gordor would make a good head coach at UGA. cant be worse…..

and rincon dawg, why dont you read my post earlier in this blog where i said i would pay for bobo’s uhaul out of athens… how dare you say that..

as far as the playcalling between cmr and bobo… well when i look at the 2, i think cmr had better success calling the plays that bobo did.. how many times and years have people been calling for bobo to be fired? they called for that last year also

Sometimes the coach has got to accept the reality of the kind of team he has and play to that strength. CMR doesn’t have the running backs to have a balanced offense and that is why Bobo is such a failure this year. Thomas is too little to play Tailback in the SEC. All It takes is an arm to bring him down. Ealey, is prone to fumble and King can’t stay healthy.
If I was CMR Murray would throw the ball 50 to 60 times a game and Murray would run 10 to 15 times when things opened up.
For this year UGA’s strength is the pass. They have a very good receiving group.
Other than Bobo being demoted every coach that did not come in with Grantham needs to be reevaluated on job performance and skills in recruiting. After this year total collapse surely somebody is going to be replaced.
Grantham and the people he hired is hands off for at least 3 or 4 years until he has a complete recruiting class playing. If he did not bring in any of the coaches then they shpuld be evaluated also.

Brian Van Gordor was a great coordinator no doubt about it but he was run out of Georgia Southern after one season cause he was in over his head at a small shool. Like I have said Mdawg its not just Bobo good god its CMR s offense. Everything is slow developing and go routes. No slants no wheel routes to shake off the pressure. 2:07 am

Your wrong, Bill. This is a very talented ball club that is being coached by people who are showing no ability to use them. Im sorry, but this is Mike Bobo all the way…again.

1) He has completely forgotten how to use the TE. Use of TE was a staple of Richts first 6 seasons, but has slowly been phased out as Bobo phases in. Orson Charles is excellent, and by the way, was a favorite target of Murray in high school. They connect nearly every time Murray throws to him, but Charles continues to be a non-factor in the play calling.

2) He has completely forgotten how to use the FB. Dumping off to the FB and quick handoffs to the FB were another successful staple in Richts offense. On the rare occasions he calls their number, they deliver. Yet much like Charles, they are noticeably absent from the overall gameplan.

3) Carlton Thomas is a Jeff Demps type back that is a danger to break one every time he touches the ball. Bobo would rather hand off up the middle and have King and Ealey get tripped up at the line of scrimmage. He refuses to figure out how to get this kid invovled in the offense.

4) The defense held Miss St. to 7 points going into the 4th. The dam finally broke but can you blame them? A terrible unit from a year ago is learning a new scheme while being essentially asked to win the game. They have kept UGA in all 3 losses while the offense continues to trip over itself.

Bobo is sitting on a very talented offense, and has managed to have it playing at less than half speed. It is the exact same regression the defense made under Willie Martinez. No A J Green cannot fix that because he isnt calling the plays. AJ will make things easier on the overall offense, but until the game plans improve, his impact will not be what it should be.

To the UGA faithful, if this doesn’t convince you that it’s time for a change, then you want to keep having losing program. I understand that this is a new defensive scheme but, there was no emotion in that defense at all. I hate to say it but, it is time for a new regime to come right the ship. Richt’s days are over and the players on the team don’t seem to want to play for them anymore. The defense looks awful and they are getting worse by the week. The defense quit after the first drive and a returning AJ Green won’t solve this problem. The bottom line is we need a new coaching staff and we better do it quick so we can keep some recruits. John Gruden is a great offensive mind, Chris Petersen, even pay Jimmy Johnson the way Alabama paid Nick Saban. The results are on the football field. I don’t won’t to hear anything else about how great of a coach MR is, because great coaches figure out the problem and right the ship quickly and this idiot keeps coaches around knowing how bad they are. Grantham seems like a bust and what happen to his fire on the sideline. Did the saintly MR calm him down also. Seasons over. Time to start looking for a new HC and prepare for next year. The only thing we can play for is to keep the recruits we have because there is now way we will get Crowell or Drew with this pathetic coaching staff. Top six reasons the Dawgs are losing.

1. Bobo is over his head and needs to be replaced with a top flight offensive coordinator.
2. We over emphasize recruiting tight ends and receivers and under emphasize recruiting linemen.
3. Our offensive scheme is very outdated, plain and very predictable. It is time to rebuild the play book.
4. We are recruiting a lot of kids with no moral compass and their lack of character which is evidenced by arrests and NCAA suspensions off the field limits their performance on the field.
5. CMR is a great person but he has failed to surround himself with quality offensive coaches, Bobo is not OC material, Brian McClendon is a kid / receiver coaching running backs, Tony Ball is a running back coaching receivers, and Stacy Searels has not performed at all. (The jury is still out on the new Defensive staff.)
6. We have failed to prepare new quarterbacks to step in when one graduates or goes to the NFL.

CMR has through 2011 to fix it.

You GA fans are hilarious. How many of you were on this same board after the first game talking conference/national championship? Now after a bad streak the season is over and you’re ready to fire everyone. College footfall is a funny game and a lot can change in a hurry. If UGA pulls out a few quality wins by the end of the year will you still be ready to clean house?

And for all of you who think Mark Richt is too nice, or too Christian, to be a winner, keep this in mind: Tim Tebow was a player of tremendous faith…Danny Wuerffel was as nice a guy as there ever was and is a preacher’s son…heck, even Spurrier is a preacher’s son. Richt’s faith or the fact that he is a nice guy have nothing to do with the state of the program.

By the way, we brought in a new DC this year too and our defense is still clicking on all cylinders….

When is CMR going to wake up and realize that the Dawgs have not been the same since he relinquished the OC duties to Bobo? He wins when he is focused on the offense. If he doesn’t at the very least demote Bobo and take the offensive reigns over, then he needs to admit that he is done as UGA’s head coach. The wheels have fallen off. The SEC has left Mark Richt. His ignorance of the shortcomings of his staff is the ship he is going down on.

CMR proved he was a better than average OC. In his first years he was lucky to have BVG as DC while he called plays. He did not replace BVG well, He did not replace himeself well as OC – Bozo.

When you do not pick good assistant coaches, do not recruit to your needs, or coach up your talent, then you are not head coach material. We all rise to the level of our incompetency.

With the financial resources that UGA has they can afford to hire a HC coach that is both a proven coach and a manager – Alabama did.

Dear UGA AD & Prez. Adams – prove to us you are as smart as Alabama.

BTW

It was interesting just watching the coaches on respective sidelines last night.

UGA – Bobo in his usual daze. Grantham looking confused with late last minute calls into the D. CMR looked perplexed, frustrated, internalizing, seemed to be with loss of how to control the events unfolding.

Miss State – Both their HC & DC was fired up, vocal, animated, in the moment. DC was always one step ahead of Bozo – (but so is everyone else).

Bottom line – Head coach dictates the demeanor and response of his staff and the team.

CRM is too nice to fire. Bobo needs a veteran QB to make the plays, a good QB like Joe Hamilton made Ralph Friedgen a genius. Hershel Walker made Vince Dooley a great coach. Murray has all the talent, but he needs a very special coach to bring that out. Bobo is good just not good with a talented rookie. Stafford took way to long to develop and he had the best arm in the nation. Bobo is an okay coach, but not good enough to get Murray to become the QB he could become without dumping a season. Think about the freshmen QBs that have succeeded without tanking the season. Either Bobo is not the man, or Murray isn’t.

Bill,

We’re obviously learning more about this team each week. Murray and Durham and warriors. So glad Durham came back for a final year and Murray is going to be one of the Dawg’s greatest QB’s before it’s all said and done with. The crap that Grantham is stuck with on defense is some of the worst fundamentally sound “talent” I think I have ever seen. The OL is highly overrated and a huge disappointment. Ealey should NEVER again be called upon in the the redzone. It was clear he got his bell rung last night and didn’t know where he was for a moment after the hit. Kinda hard to fault a player for a fumble when they were nearly knocked out, but that’s the second costly fumble he has coughed up in the opponent’s endzone. This season is now a wash, so best to just spend the rest of it evaluting all the positions for next year. Go Dawgs!!!!

Other than that, I can’t think of much to be happy about. Even Drew Butler’s punts stink. They have no hang time at all.
You guys blaming Bobo need to wake up and realize that his problems are only a tiny portion of the overall larger problem. Richt’s program is broken from top to bottom, and even if given time, he can’t fix it because he doesn’t know how.

I can’t really recall many times when we have really showed up as a complete football team the past few seasons. It seems like something is always missing. As important as playcalling and game plans are, you still have to have the grit and refusal to be put away. The other teams, especially SEC schools, have beaten us fair and square. I certainly don’t have the answers but it has become alarmingly evident this team and the preceeding ones don’t show up to win. It’s sad but true that Richt has accomplished all he is willing or capable to do. Complacency and a atmosphere of entitlement have replaced the energy and hunger.

Coach Richt is # 21 after 2005 in wins, recruiting in a state which finds only 3 with more high school players in the NFL and coaching for the # 11 football program in 1-A wins all-time.

This is the 5th year after 2005, for those who think this is 3 games, 2 years, or 3 years.

Year 5 after 2005.

Year 5, second half of the Coach Richt Era when Jim Donnan recruits were gone NFL

I point out that Year 5, second half of the Coach Richt Era when Jim Donnan recruits were gone NFL, that The University of Georgia Bulldogs are # 2 in Fulmer Cup over these 5 years too.

Get it straight that it is not just the last 3 years, and please note that we lose 15 seniors and 4-5 juniors after this season – so 2011 with a far tougher schedule than this, is going to be no different.

NONE.

Note please that Demetre Baker ARRESTED for DUI at 4:26 a.m. this morning is ARREST # 10 for Coach Richt’s recruits SINCE MARCH 7.

Some fans are real idiots….just like a lot of you here. Georgia is average at best at running back, the offensive line is playing below average and may not have above average talent. Our secondary once again stinks even without Bryan Evans and Willie. I see very little difference in the defense this year and last year. We still have costly penalties and turnovers and cant seem to recover a fumble. The quarterback is going to have to carry the team offensively that is Georgia’s only chance. Who is the guy who said Carlton Thomas is a Jeff Demps type player, you got to be kidding me! We dont have UF talent.

Play calling was ok in the first half. We moved the ball at will pretty much but a goal line fumble and then a penalty cost us two scores. The O-line was inconsistent. They go from opening a hole that you could drive a truck through to folding like a tent. Bobo went conservative with Durham out of the game and we became predictable. Defense doesn’t have the personnel for Granthams 3-4. It will probably take a couple of recruiting years to get him what he needs to run that scheme. You need a beefy Nose guard and two large DE’s in a 3-4 and we don’t have it. So based on what I’ve seen. Consider a 6-6 year a success and hope that we can do better than that with A.J back. Keep in mind that Bobo is running Richts offense. Not his own. He calls the plays but this offense is Richts.

One more thing. I agree with something that Buck said on 680 the fan. I think we missed the boat on some of these O-linemen. Either our scouting miscategorized them or they’ve under acheiving or Stacy Searels isn’t the O-line coach that he’s been touted as. Also, King and Ealey are not what we thought they were. You would never see Moreno go down with an arm tackle from a lineman that’s laying on the ground like Ealey did last night. Where’s the determination from the backs? Sad state of affairs. I like Mark Richt and I hope he can find something to turn things around.

Since this season is over before it began, the Dawgs should try different players in different roles to build for next year. I’d love to see Richt declare every job on the offensive line available to the most deserving candidate. Since most of the guys on the line are upperclassmen (and terrible) anyway, we might as well let the younger guys get some experience. Just imagine how awesome Murray would be at this point if he played about half of last season.

I have always admired Richt as a Christian and man of integrity, but his coaching skills have to be questioned at this point. Does anyone in the Bulldog Nation doubt that we do less with more talent than any team in the country ? How can you miss the continuing flaws in our guys year after year- penalties, fumbles , etc. It’s all about coaching- other teams get better as the year progresses while we keep self-destructing . Now both our O & D lines are getting beaten by the likes of MSU…..Time to clean house, starting with CMR , who shd offer to resign immediately unless some miracle approaches Athens (and no it isn’t A J Green …) At this point our year is lost and so will our recruits unless they see hope for the future. Would you want your HS senior to play for UGA if he had offers to play elsewhere ??

The ensuing ’start-over’ will be painful- it will likely take 2-3 years to get competitive again, but I will support a new regime and be patient as long as there is hope for improvment. CMR’s real calling is faith-based and he shd have no qualms about joining Tony Dungy in helping troubled kids find hope in their lives.

Looking on the bright side, Aaron Murray is playing very well, AJ is coming back, and the games leading up to Florida are against lower echelon teams we should beat fairly easily if talent and depth were the only things that count. But, we seem to be lacking swagger, that aggressive self-confidence factor one sees in such hated rivals as Florida and Bama. It has to be the coaching staff, doesn’t it? If CMR is the leader we need, he will lead us out of this morass into a brilliant turn-around culminating in knocking off the Gators and winning out. I’d love it, but I’m not holding my breath.

Look at the box score. UGA won every category with the exception of three: Rushing, Penalties, Turnovers. Ealy has to get the ball more than 10 times. I don’t care about the fumble. And, adjustments need to be made on “O” to counteract the exact same blitz on nearly every play. If they are sending that many guys, someone should be open. Why not roll murray out of the pocket? Why not use the shotgun more? Everybody says he holds the ball too long, but the defenders were in his face on his first step back.

I’m sure you could prevent a 19 year old from getting drunk while he’s in Athens and you’re in Starkville MS or on the road back. The kid did not even make the trip. You cannot supervise these kids 24/7. The make decisions and, like us they make bad decisions. However, he needs to be made an example of be dismissed from the team.

I’m sorry, but Coach Mark Richt is responsible for the malaise that has take hold in Athens. For the last few years things have gotten stranger and stranger; lineman (offense & defense) appear to be getting manhandled physically, supposedly gifted recruits are busts (or are being coached down), coaches are unable to or don’t know how to teach basic football techniques and the most damning is there is no discipline on either the field or off. And that dear friends, goes straight back to the Head Coach, he needs to practice harder and tougher. And accept that he has recruited way to many nuckleheads and followers. He needs winners and leaders, not just good looking athletes.

The Dawgs could and probably will lose quite a few more. This could easily be the worst season that we’ve seen in years. It is clearly a program going down, not up as reflected in the past couple of seasons. Very overrated talent and inept coaching. 10 arrests. Character problems are far more difficult to correct than skills. A few “bad” apples can spoil the whole bunch. This is a program that is in the dirt.

The Richt era is coming to a sad and uncerimonious end. I never saw this coming. I thought he would be a legend. I thought we’d be naming buildings and streets after him one day. Lets be honest with ourselves, is there anyway he can turn it around? I don’t think there is. I have never seen a more clueless and impotent football team in my entire life. Its complete farcical theatre every time we take the field. I just sat there laughing last night like I was watching the Three Stooges or something. We have become a joke. We are so far behind the rest of the SEC that it will take YEARS for us to catch up. Whatever Richt was doing in the beginning, he either isn’t doing it anymore or it isn’t working. I hate it for the guy because he is a class act, but its time to move on…

The look on Richt’s face near the end of the game said it all. He looked like a man worn down, beaten, and ready to give up.

Like he said in his post game interview, “I have never been in this situation before.” It’s over, plain and simple. We only have to stomach eight more games before a change is made. If a change is not made after this year, then UGA, Adams, McGarity and anyone else at Georgia that gives Richt another year is dilusional. This program is going nowhere with him.

Plus, it really doesn’t matter that we will loose some recruits with his departure. We’re going to loose recruits anyways. Georgia has to stop the bleeding before we get in a hole that takes YEARS to climb out of.

Go get Boise States head coach in the off season. Hopefully he will help to save face, and in a couple of years we can be proud of our DAWGS again. What we are seeing now is beyond pathetic. This is the way the Vanderbilts of the world play. A program lik Georgia should never have to go through this.

People Get Ready….., the trains a coming…..
I am sure, knowing some of the “good ol boy’s” on the search committee, that the decision has been made and the process has begun.

Coach Richt has done many good things at UGA. He had a good run due to the recruiting done by those before him. He had 2 great defensive coaches. His offensive play calling was fresh, daring and showed a stoke of genius. His coaches moved on…, the recruits were not of caliber of those before and Coach Richt became the CEO. The CEO of team that was slowly bleeding it’s assets and heritage dry.

Coach Richt, in his rise in prominence in the SEC lost sight of why he was hired in the first place. As a student of Bobby Bowden and coach for him, he designed offensive schemes that no one in the country could keep up with.

but now he has turned into a CEO and given the reason why he was hired to an assistant…..

Dawgfan, you are right. We’re not even as good as Vanderbilt at this point. I never thought I would say that but it’s true.

The worst team in the SEC. WOW!

To anyone that thinks it’s too early for change just look back to 2000. That year we were in the preseason top 10, had high hopes of winning the SEC, yet we chocked, lost to S.C., Florida, Auburn, and Ga. Tech for a third straight year. We still won 8 games that year, but Donnan was still fired.

It doesn’t take long for a team to fall apart. It has happened at Georgia. This is worse than 2000. If we loose to Florida, Auburn, and Ga. Tech we finish 6-6, and that’s IF we only loose to those teams. Tennesse, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky are all toss ups. If we finish 6-6 or worse, who in their right mine would give Richt another chance?

While your at it, tell them to stop telling me so and so plays for the opposing team against the Falcons who also just happened to go there. Bobo is NOT why you’re losing, fans, it’s the players. I find it histerical, ever since the late 90’s, UGA has the top recruiting classes, yet you can’t get past Florida while they’ve won several national championships. Sticks a craw in ya doesn’t it? The nation doesn’t care about the flippin’ Bulldogs. Do you see ESPN going on and on and on and on and on like these fans, who need to get a life, about Georgia? You’ll know when you have hit rock bottom. That will be when you have to search for the channel to watch your team. As you continue to lose, not provide an entertaining or exciting game to watch, then ESPN will relegate you to the less watched channels with bad time slots. Just look at Ole Miss. You think losing hurts? Wait until other schoold can out recruit you citing poor TV ratings. Just watch, your games will be on CSS, etc while Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina and Florida are on CBS and ESPN. LSU, Vandy and Kentucky will be on ESPN2.

This is how they will review it

September 26th, 2010
12:20 pm

The review of the recent Mark Rich era will start with the year UGA was pre season number 1. We lost to SC and badly …………very, very badly to UT and to Florida. Supposedly, we has top caliber EC grade talent but it ended with no much fanfare. This is the cornerstone in the review ….2007.

Last year, was by all accounts, a ( 9-3? ) re building year going in. Joe Cox, we were told, was a solid leader with a grasp of the UGA offense and a solid short to intermediate range passer. We lost 5 games and we lost to KY and to Ok State ( Cox had the flu) and the ugly last 38 second loss to LSU, due to UGA celebrating an AJ TD and then, not covering properly on the ensuing kick off. Toss sweep to Charles Scott and he ran 33 yds right over Rennie Curran ( simply too small ) and we lost to LSU. We also lost badly again to Florida and to UT …..very,very badly.

The 08 loss to GT will ALSO figure heavily in Richt’s last 3 – 5 year review. THAT LOSS was strictly due to UGA laying down on the job in the second half. We had a 16 point halftime lead and we fumbled and threw quick 6 pics to allow the the win. We laid down at home. That was a sign of Richt’s calmness and a lack of a sense of urgency. This comment is key to it all.

This year is only the fall off the cliff result of 3 – 4 years of really lousy recruiting. We have not signed the great linebackers or the D linemen or the great O linemen and in the SEC THAT is where games are won. We also do not have any ………..any running backs that are SEC caliber. See Ealey as one horrible example.

BY late season, Richt will announce that he is retiring after the GT game. If he does not, there is not one shred of evidence that he can resurrect UGA’s football program. He has had 10 years of mediocrity.

Adams and McGarity will not allow him to continue, after this review.

Go Dogs.

As has been correctly pointed out in this morass of inaccuracies, MSU ran the same play about 25 to 30 times and we could not stop it. Get over blaming the lack of success on poor play calling! It is lack of execution. Our o-line can not run block! They are not very good. Without blocking up front, no play calling will pull us out of this mess.

It is also interesting to note, that we did not play aggressive defense at times when disruption of the offense was imperative. So much for all the talk about how we were going to play defense differently this year. Talk is cheap, I thought we would surely not let a team just methodically drive the length of the field without at least sending everybody into the fray.

The players need to do some soul searching. The coaches need to make sure they do the same.

Face it guys, this is the worst team since the Ray Goof era.I have one word to describe our team—OVERRATED—–These 3-4-5 star players we recruit are not very good. Someone is a poor evaluator of talent. Our recruits choose between us & Vandy-KY-MISS ST-OLE MISS. Rarely do we get a recruit who chooses between us & AL-FL-AUB & even SC. Its hard to disagree with anyone that we are the worst team in the WHOLE sec. With all the talent in the state of Ga it is unexcusable to be the worst team in the SEC. Its hard for me to believe we are the worst team in the SEC but after watching every game this season I have to agree —WE ARE THE WORST.

It’s about time we start using our best players even if they are freshmen because our upperclassmen are OVERRATED ESPECIALLY ON THE OFFENSE LINE & DEFENSE LINE.I realized last night that someones head has got to roll.I have always defended MR but the product he is putting out is awful & after last night I realized that MR cannot get us to the next level but it does appear that he can bring us down to the depths we have not seen since the RAY GOOF era

Not as bad as it seems, despite what the AJC sensationalistic writers want fans to believe. You fumble on the 1, cost you 7. You hold on the Durham td, cost you another 4. A hold on a big 3rd down conversion in the 3rd qrtrt near the red zone–cost 7 points. Then you run the clock out at the end, or punt it away.

Richt’s the best coach in the country, just going through a tough spell. He’ll figure it out.

Yeah Randy, Saban was losing with a team he inherited from the coach the year before. It took him one year and he had those guys competing for the SEC title.
Richt is losing with his players and his program, and this “bad spell” is in year 3 officially (year 5 if you consider disappointment)
Your opinion about Richt does not stand up to any logical reasoning.

We definitely do the least with the most.

I think we have some great coaches, and I don’t want to be a fair weather fan, but we do have a consistent problem in the last four years with our offense. Few teams could run against a defense swarming the box like all teams now play UGA. We need to start throwing deep a lot more. Look what happened at the end of the game–marched up the field for a TD in about a minute. It is tough to get Murray the time because of the blitzes–the defenses cover us tight, blitz frequently, and dare us to throw it long. The coaches need to set up some packages designed to stay alive long enough to burn the other teams deep. If we had started out in a shotgun throwing it long, MSU would have had no choice but to pull more players into coverage. And that opens the up the run. Playing UGA is getting to be an easy routine for opposing DCs. Bobo is a good coach, but he does fall into patterns that he needs to competely break out of–or this nightmare will continue. Just breaking up the pattern will help all facets of our offense, imho. Some of his ideas are great. The late screen to King was wide open–he would still be running. We need to work with Murray on telegraphing. Fake/look somewhere else first–especially on screens!

One more idea: we need to run a Navy/Tech style option with Gray as the Flanker. Put him in motion behind the I. FB off tackle; Murray could run(probably not!), TB is the lead blocker on the edge, pitch it to Gray after faking to the FB. Gray takes the pitch and he then has the option of runing or throwing it. We need to use our weapons. How many times do you have a QB who is a decent enough receiver to do this, yet we haven’t done it once! Also, keep trying the wildcat to Ealey a few times a game. It gives a different look and causes the D to make adjustments.

Fumble at the 1 – TD called back with penalty – and then the real killer (I thought we were in control of the game until this) – 24 yard line of MSU – then we get a 15 yard penalty – takes us out of FG range – punt to the 7 and MSU drives 93 yards to break our backs. If we don’t get the penalty there – we at least kick a FG (Blair Walsh is one of the few good things on this team) and make it 10-9 with some momentum.

Sound like Richt is unhappy with Bobo also – comments about calling running plays blindly. I think this is Bobo’s last week. I think Richt is loyal enough to say see what you can do with AJ back. If still bad, I think he’s gone. Last year at SC and Ark. Bobo won it for us. Now he’s terrible for the most part.

The defense will be fine. We’re learning the 3-4 a whole lot quicker than the geniuses at Tech!

Fire Bobo and maybe Searles, and in ‘012 we’re in the National Championship hunt.

Soft, lethargic, uninspired, passive, tentative. Any others?

Richt’s team approach for the football season is like that of a couple’s retreat – let’s meditate, hold hands, go swimming, and get to know each other a little better. We will runs some plays later.

Saban/Meyer appear to be all business, all football, and focused on winning.

I get the impression that a player called in to Richt’s office might say something akin to, “hey Mark, thanks for the hug, I’ll try to do better next time”.

On the other hand, Saban’s player has a bowel movement in his under armour’s before entering the doorway.

Sometimes fear is a good thing.

High recruiting rankings may not necessarily mean that we signed high quality linemen. Understand?

UGA could get fabulous rankings and does for signing QBs, tight ends, or FG kickers like Walsh and flankers and corners like B Smith who add nothing to the mix or that Carlton Thomas who NEVER should have been recruited by UGA …… ever.

Where oh where is the BEEF?? Yes, we get one or two fairly decent kids like a Ben Jones but we do not sign them in high numbers and then, we do not develop them. Here is THE PROBLEM and we saw it last night.

Both lines of scimmage for UGA are sub standard and have been for awhile. Secondly, we have let the good state of Georgia backs get gone. We have no running backs worth spit beyond the two fullbacks and maybe, maye that Boo Malcolm kid.

A new coach will need 3 or 4 years to right this ship and it will not be a quick fix. Look for UGA to be back maybe in 2012 or 2013. Sorry.

Folks, this season was best accentuated by the poor UGA coverage of an Arkansas punt that was initially bobbled after rolling to the punter and then, after he quit laughing at UGA’s NO RUSH, he ran 16 yds for the first down. They scored later on that drive.

This play best captures what this year has been and will be like. UGA is an incomplete football team and anyone beyond a non football fan knows it by simply viewing them for awhile.

UGA defeated an outmanned Arkansas team in the Dome for CMR’s first SEC title by RUSHING AND BLCOKING A PUNT IN THE SAME SPOT. In that game UGA scored and Arkansas never recovered.

Different D coverage got us beat. That my friends is a lack of coaching.

Change will be coming in mid season for a couple of coaches.

Go Dogs.

The real problem is this “season” has been coming for a few years. Poor coaching, discipline will ‘rear it’s ugly head” and it has in Georgia. Richt says it is time to look “inward”! “WOW” HOW PROFOUND CMR”. How about “I have embarassed Ga. Football, I have embarassed the fans” but “NO” we don’t hear that from CMR. The “only way” Richt should keep his job is if he “fires” his entire staff” and starts over-which he won’t do. Adams has to step in. McGarrity is too new to take this type of “bold step to fire CMR” but Adams can do it and he just might if the “arrest” continue with the “football players”.

Two scenarios:

Mark Richt does some soul searching, decides to do what’s necessary to build a winning program, i.e. change his coaching style. We’re looking at a two to three year “process” to rebuild the foundation and restock the shelves. That said, how hard is it for someone to change their personality traits. If you don’t have nerve, backbone, guts, do you just mature and grow them? They are intangible traits and I believe you either have them or you don’t.

McGarity believes the latter, fires CMR at the end of the year, or worse yet, gives him another year, then fires him. The new coach will then need two to three years to rebuild.

These are trying times to be a Georgia Bulldawg. Things could always be worse, so be thankful for all that you have.

Seeing CMR slam his playbook to the turf last nite was the highlight of the game. I’m glad he is feeling frustration too, just like the fans. One big dif, he is making 2 million samoleons!!! Maybe after a nite or two of sleeping on it, he will go to work with some spit and vinegar and call out his so-called coaches. He should use more than darn and heck in the process. Then, he should call out his under performing players and have a MR. T lookalike bodyslam a few of them to make his point. That is, SORRINESS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!!! Then MR. T should bodyslam CMR to bring the point home.

This should say that we lost “these three” in the trenches. Our offensive line is so soft it is almost unbelievable. There was one play in particular during the first half when the RG and RT (not sure who they were) got up into their A pass blocks just as three MSU defenders overloaded that side. Decent OL would have blocked two and left one player free and let the RB block him if there was one, or make the QB scramble. What actually happened is both players looked left, looked right, saw they couldn’t block all three, and ended up letting all three go through untouched. It should be noted this WAS NOT a screen pass. It was one of the most pitiful performances i have ever seen by an OL.

Absolutely right about losing it in the trenches. In particular, the defensive trench was virtually nonexistant for UGA. We’re getting manhandled completely out of the picture on simple dive plays that then gain 8 yards.
