Mike Bobo’s playcalling didn’t do his young QB any favors

Aaron Murray did get to use his running ability a bit more Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray did get to use his running ability a bit more Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

We talked here earlier this week about Georgia’s game against Arkansas as something of a test for Dogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

Well, it was.

And he failed.

Yes, there were defensive lapses Saturday that the Razorbacks capitalized on, including biting on that play fake on Arkansas’ first score, but thanks to too many three-and-outs again this week the Georgia D was on the field entirely too long to try and keep a high-powered offense led by a talented QB like Ryan Mallett in check.

And showing a lot of grit the Dogs did battle back from a 24-10 deficit to tie it up 24-24 with 3:55 left in the game.

But after a fine defensive series got the ball back for Georgia and the Dogs had moved to midfield thanks to runs by Washaun Ealey and Carlton Thomas, the bizarre playcalling by Bobo that had plagued them all day reared its ugly head again.

Third and 4 and rather than a quick slant pass across the middle, or sending Ealey or Thomas wide, or rolling Aaron Murray out with the option to pass or run, instead Bobo sends all the receivers at least 20 yards downfield and has his QB standing back there way too long. The result is a sack that took Murray’s helmet (and nearly his head) off and the Dogs let a chance to win the game get away from them.

I’ll grant Bobo that Murray has a tendency to hold on to the ball too long in some situations. As Bobo said after the game, “We need to work on getting rid of the ball a little bit quicker.” But that’s to be expected of a redshirt freshman and Bobo knows that. So why put Murray into those situations?

And the play of Georgia’s offensive line continued to fall short, with run blocking up the middle virtually nonexistent and Murray’s protection falling apart too often.

But time and time again Saturday, Bobo showed a lack of a short-yardage game outside the red zone. On an earlier third and 1, Murray was sacked waiting on receivers to get open on long routes. All they needed was 1 yard and he’s looking to throw long??!!

This wasn’t a great defense the Dogs were facing in Arkansas, but at times Georgia made them look that way.

Yes, the Dogs missed suspended ace receiver A.J. Green on some plays, but especially in the second half Dogs receivers, including Kris Durham, Tavares King and the little-used Israel Troupe, came up with clutch receptions.

And because of the poor line play, the running game was inconsistent, though it occasionally showed flashes of what we had expected.

I’ll also give Bobo credit for at least loosening the reins on Murray and allowing him to take off with the ball, which resulted in Georgia’s first touchdown. But where were the tight ends for most of the day? Why didn’t Georgia make more use of the screen and quick hits over the middle?

And there was the predictability factor again in Bobo’s playcalling. When fans in the stands are consistently calling out what the Georgia play is going to be before the snap, you know your offense has a problem.

And I hate to say it, but I think that problem is Mike Bobo. Absent the superior talent of playmakers like D.J. Shockley, Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, who made Bobo look good in the past, he is revealed as a rather pedestrian offensive mind.

I’ll have more on Sunday, but for now, have at it. …

The average Play Station NCAA football coach is superior to Mike Bobo. How many times did we run play action in the first half, when we weren’t running the ball well. Isn’t that a precondition of play action? I know that from just sitting on my butt for 40+ years and just watching football.

And how many straight years have we come into the season saying that the O Line will be the strength of the team, and it takes 3 quarters of the season before they finally start playing well. Searles has to go, too. These guys are Sun Belt or FCS- level coaches, at best. These players deserve better coaching.

Agree Bill. I also thought the TO before 3rd and 4 with 64 seconds left was a bad call. We’re at midfield with all 3 TO left. Why not get a play off with about 30 seconds left? If we get a 1st down, great. That leaves us with about 10 yards needed to get in FG range for 1 of the best in the nation. If no first down, it doesn’t leave them with enough time to score after we punt. I like our chances in OT. Yep, bad coaching cost us a chance to win this one.

Bobo thinks playaction is mandatory. I know Murray is going to hand to Ealey whenever he drops back to pass, and I know Murray will pass whenever he acts like he’s going to hand it to Ealey.

If we lost 5 games again this season, Bobo goes. If we lose 5 games again next season, Richt goes. We are weak, timid, and stupid.

I’m tired of sleepwalking in the 1st half, I’m tired of the false starts and turnovers in the redzone, I;m tired of the predictable playcalling, I’m tired of the arrests, and I’m tired of losing…. We have now lost 8 of our last 18.

Time to turn it around, Coach Richt.

Bobo and Searls should be fired by EOD. Maybe we will be ready to play like a real team by the time the Tech game comes around like last year.

Run blocking and pass blocking was terrible. Play calling again predictable and just plain stupid.

Murray is learning and we have a good one. Now we just need to have an offensive mind that can utilize our talent.

By the way loafing by M Brown was the only reason the hail mary wasn’t caught. Loafing by the D again was the reason the last Ark. play was a TD. Everyone was just standing around. We really missed B. Smith at DB.

There’s nothing more to say about this team until we have new coaches. We have equal or better talent than everyone else, yet the lack of discipline and boneheaded mistakes show up every week. Why in the hell would you not roll him out more, especially on that last 3rd and 4? Murray is a runner and a passer, but we make him stand in the pocket. If he had rolled out with a possible 5 yard dump pass or the option to run, he would have had a much better chance and made Ark really think about it. You’ve got a dual threat QB, USE HIM!

I agree 1000% Bobo has to go. His play calling is bad. When the announcers on TV are calling the plays, then it is too predictable. Also someone need to teach Ben Jones that when a d lineman jumps across the line of scrimmage, them snap the ball. I saw at least 3 times that happened and no snap. That is field position football. A 5 yd gain is a 5 yd gain no matter how you get it. I am also disappointed in the defense so far. Too many breakdowns in the secondary. I wonder if we have not over estimated our players back there this year.

One bright spot was that the receivers seemed to have learned to actually catch the ball. A lot of Murray’s passes weren’t great, but these guys hauled in a bunch that would have been sure drops in the past. As he get better, he’ll the deep ball down. Most of the deep catches today would have been TD’s if the receiver didn’t have to slow down and wait on the ball.

Richt’s situation really depends on what happens from here on out.

We’re going to be favored in each of our next five games. We have to win all of them. No excuses. Win them all.

After that, it’ll be a question of what we can do besides our gimme win against Idaho State. If we win one of Florida, Auburn, and Tech, we’ll be right where we were last year. If we win two, we’ll be 9-3 and maybe feeling some positivity around here. Lose all three and Richt will be firmly on the hot seat in 2012. I have no doubt about that.

I agree Bill, BoBo failed yet again at pointing his team in the best position to succeed. He does not allow Murray to work to his strength in key situation. Also forget about all that preseason hype about this offensive line being the biggest strength of the team, it may well be the weakest link of this team. They never create wholes for the runners and they are not doing a great job of pass protection for a young quarterback. Defense still can’t cover receivers or tackle very well.

We are in for a long season. I still think we get to 8 wins though.

It’s going to be a long season trying to dIg out of this hole. I hate to say it but Bobo is in over his head. If your a CEO, General or a coach you just don’t say “I don’t know.” even if you don’t.

““I don’t really have the answers on how you’re gonna open it up with him. Just allowing him to make more plays, I guess, would be the answer.” Mike Bobo

Not to whine, but the guy that Ealey waved to as he went by to just about kill Murray led with his helmet to Murray’s head: Pretty bad call I thought. Jones was called for a lot less against OKST last year. Ealey better learn to block; he has a lot of potential as a runner, but he is lucky Murray wasn’t hurt by his lack of blocking (more than once.) Murray has a strong arm. If Brown had run a little faster he would have been on ESPN a thousand times this week! The receivers made some very nice catches, and Murray made some nice throws. D played outstanding if we could just erase about 5 plays. The safeties have to get better. The O line needs to get back in last year’s form and shape–I don’t know what is wrong there. After the 10 yd run on our 1st play of the last possession, why the drop back (sack) on the next play? If you want to pass, why not take advantage of AM’s strength and roll him out? Same thing on 3rd and 4. I don’t get it. That possession should have resulted in either a FG attempt with no time left to win, or punt with virtually no time left and we go to OT with a better kicker. Remember, we called TO at midfield with 1:04 immediately (dumb call) after the 2nd down and long run got us to a manageable 3rd and 4.

1- Get a 100 yard rusher–Richt’s 39-2 when that happens–Bobo hasn’t done this all season yet. Hand the ball to Ealey 25 times, is it that hard? How Bobo refuses to find a scheme to consistently get a rusher 100 yards, when he knows it’s Richt’s surest offensive strategy of getting a win, is inexcusable.
2- Having your QB go less than a 2-to-1 td to int ratio, when others in the SEC are hitting over 4, isn’t competing. It’s got to be up around 4 like McElroy and Tebow were last year, no exscuses, find a way. Murray’s at a 1.5 td to int ratio this season, whihc is worse than Joe Cox, which I thought was impossible to achieve.

We need to bring in a superstar — but everyone should remember that when (not if) CMB gets canned, we will likely lose a few recruits, just like we did when Martinez left. It’s inevitable — and Christian Lemay may be one of them. That said, I think it’s the right move for CMR to make. I imagine new AD McGarity will provide the prodding, if any is needed.

Yep, it was pretty bad today. All of you are right. We don’t have a defensive line and our offensive line shows it can often pass block but never run block. And Murry did OK for a young kid. He shows signs of being a good QB. But I am equally disappointed in that we don’t have any elite, powerhouse running backs. Yeh, Ealey had a few good runs, but overall I’ve come to realize he’s a pretty average running back in the SEC. Lots of runs for 2-3 yards but usually none for 20 or 30 yards. And what has happened to Caleb King? For all his hype, he has fallen off the face of the earth and hasn’t helped this team out one bit. Watching Lattimore for SC last week, and Richardson and Ingram for Alabama this week…….it makes me wonder why we don’t seem to get guys like them.

Our secondary stunk it up today. Don’t know where our new secondary coach is. Don’t know what our OL coach is doing. Don’t know what our DC is doing. Don’t know what our conditioning coach is doing. Don’t know what our OC or HC are doing to earn their money either.

If allowed, CMR will take this program to the very bottom of the SEC. 0-2 in the SEC should be unacceptable at UGA.

Okay, we know the drill. Now the ball is in Richt’s hands. IMO he should take over as OC starting Monday and put Bobo back as QB coach. McGarity should be on the phone starting Monday morning looking for new OC, OL, RB and WR’s coaches.

Overall, I think the D played much better with the notable exception of Bacarri Rambo, who is rapidly becoming the next Prince Miller.

Bobo was a decent quarterback for UGA back in the day but I think we need a fresh mind in the OC department. Coaches keep saying that having multiple scholarship players in each position keeps the competition intense and keeps the players hungry for playing time. Basically, the coaches make it known that each week, no one is guaranteed to be the starter. I think coaches need to be in the same boat as these players to avoid being complacent. What I’m saying is that Bobo needs a little hint that his role as an OC is in jeopardy unless he starts playing to keep his position.

There were definately some bright spots. The effort was tremendous I thought considering the pressure the players had to be feeling. The momentum was there. I think I even saw a Junkyard Dawg once or twice. What I didn’t see at all was any creativity on offense aside from Murray’s own instinctive play. It’s a shame really. I remember a couple of years ago when we were all calling for Bobo to be promoted. Nowdays it’s hard to figure what the game plan is, if there is one at all aside from don’t lose and don’t throw a pick six. We’re coaching scared. Take a look at the 2011 schedule…it’s a cake walk comparatively to seasons past. Do we risk wasting that year on a new offensive coordinator and or a new line coach? Tough decision for sure, but one that has to be made at some point for the long term good. In the short term, I think our best hope is that CMR will resume play calling, take off the restrictor plates, and let the chips fall. I feel for the Dawgs…I think our players deserve better. If that means CMR and or Bobo have to go, then so be it.

Prevous comments have about nailed it.

I recall last year’s TN game when Crompton, their mediocre QB, killed us on rollouts. Murray’s 5 times the athlete Crompton was but we never roll him out. Can’t believe rollouts are too much for for Murray to learn!?!?

And another comment on the lack of use of the tight ends. I didn’t see them in may patterns…mostly kept in to block for Bobo’s bomb calls. Is the O-line so bad we have to use the TEs just to keep Murray from getting killed?

I have to agree; Bobo’s play calling is horrendous and only sets Murray up for failure. Would Bobo and CMR please inform the offensive line that their job is to protect Murray and open holes for the running backs. I thought this was one of the best offensive lines in the country. Apparently not.

Firing Bobo is NOT an option, he has 5 kids, we can’t just throw him in the streets. What UGA can do is make him head coach, and give CMR the offensive coordinator job. Richt was a VERY good OC back when he coached for Florida State. We CAN fire Bobo, but not until he’s kids are in college or are older to get jobs.

CHDawg

We also ought to put Gray as flanker, put him in motion and then run a Tech style option–FB off of tackle, Murray could run, TB is lead blocker, Gray is the pitchman coming from motion. For crying out loud, he is a QB–toss him the ball and give him the option to run or pass. I can’t believe we haven’t used this, and I also don’t understand why we don’t roll Murray out and give him crossing routes to pick the D apart.

I feel sorry for A. Murray. He’s a baller and deserves better than that crappy O-line. I’ll admit he had “happy feet” at times, but that’s just a function of youth. Ealey’s lack of blocking skills almost got him killed, just like Caleb’s lack thereof almost got Stafford killed a few years ago. Again, it comes down to coaching. Durham also deserves a positive mention. Other than that..is it just me, or does it appear that CMR has stifled Grantham’s coaching style? Maybe Richt’s virgin ears couldn’t take the language.

I hate to say it, but Richt’s time has about come to an end. I just don’t think he can ever crest the mountain. Sure he has gotten a couple of SEC Championships, but that had more to do with other teams losing instead of the Dawgs having control. I think as long as he is here we are looking at consitant 8 to 9 win seasons. Sure a lot of teams would love to have 8 to 9 win seasons, but I would love to see something more. Great article, Bill. You are right on with your comments. If we had opened up our offense verse South Carolina we would have had a chance to win. And the play calling for the final drive verse Arkansas was pathetic. Why throw the ball when we had just run the ball so effectively. Richt won’t take play calling duties away from Bobo. He fired Martinez to buy another year. Richt figures a new AD won’t have the spine to fire him in his first year on the job. Next year he’ll fire Bobo to save his job. MR’s last year will probably be 2012.

When coaches are as highly compensated as Richt and their programs get in trouble they start doing what’s best for their wallet at the expense of the university. MR ain’t leaving until he’s bled $10 million more out of UGA. It’s the same way today’s CEOs think.

How many Dawg fans think we’re going to struggle to beat Miss. St. next week? To be quite honest, I think we’ve got a better than 50/50 shot of losing. Miss. St.’s defense is far better than Arkansas’.

We’ll be very lucky to win 6 games this year and go to a bowl. There’s clearly a major problem in Athens.

Here are some solutions:

1. Effective immediately Mark Richt should take over OC duties.
2. Effective immediately Mark Richt should ask Greg McGarity to start looking for a new OC.
3. At the end of the season Mark Richt should fire Rodney Garner. It is very clear to me that Georgia’s talent is not nearly as good as advertised. We have far too many thugs and not nearly enough guys who are tough. Garner needs to pack his bags.
4. Mark Richt should as Greg McGarity to start looking for a new OL coach.
5. Greg McGarity should tell Mark Richt that if Georgia loses to Georgia Tech his tenure at UGA will be over.

All replacement coaches should be hired immediately at the end of the season, so that it doesn’t dramatically impact recruiting.

FWIW – I think Grantham is better than Willie Martinez and will have his type of players after a couple of recruiting classes. He’s working with Garner and Martinez’s scraps.

3 and 4 game on the line and we take a sack ?????? how about boot leg or a crossing pass

close don’t cut it and all due respect for Arkansas but they are NOT the 12th best team in the country

I too am doubting the wisdom of Coach Bobo’s play=calling…I know it easy to sit here and be an armchair QB, but some of the calla at cretain times are head scracthers..I was watching with interests with my son and thinking of the different play calls that one might use when it was third and four, and i told my son maybe a roll-out with Murray or a sprint draw or heavens be maybe a quick throw to a tight end…We threw absolutely “0″ passes to O.Charles…someone please correct me if i am wrong…and you know what we had a big time tight end recruit at the game…wonder what he thinks of our use of tight ends…I’m quiet disappointed in that part of our game as i thought that would be one of our strengths especially with AJ sidelined…I believe this will be the beginning of the end as far as support for Coach Bobo as far as the fans are concerned…I know he loves Georgia and we love him, but his days as OC are not looking good…i don’t evern want to talk about the O-line…what everyonne thought would be a strength is not looking that way and even though players have to do their job, the failure is going to be attributed to the coaches…It sickens me to say this but this is shaping up to possibly be a losing season or at best 6-6…I’m not giving up, the season still can be successful, but we need some leaders to step up and put this team on their shoulders…

More of the same. Bobo is a former player and has been steeped in UGA tradition which has never been that imaginative offensively. Apart from the Russell and VanGorder days the defense has been so so. The momentum in this program is definitely on the wane. This season has the makings of another lackluster year. Whats finally happening at Georgia is that they have no superstar players to cover up for their horrible position coaches. AJ is basically done! No Moreno, No Stafford, No big hit safety like in the past, now they actually have to coach players up and they have failed miserably. Richt will be fired in another year and Georgia will be irrelavant for about three years until the new coach can come in and change things around. I am not sure at this point who the new coach will be. I say go after Muschamp at Texas, but he is getting a lot of money at Texas and he is the coach in waiting. I would also say consider Mike Leach, yea I know he has a pirate mentality with all of the off the field trouble that may not look good, but that guy can coach and he will install a pretty high powered offense in place. This should have been forshadowed by the true Georgia fan who knows the game of football. This team has been fading fast and this summer when they get at least 5 more arrest, someone will lose their job.

Good QBs will always beat a good blitz. Backed up today by Ryan Mallett.

Mark Richt is a joke and so is Bobo. Bobo wasn’t a good QB in college, what made Richt think he was ready to be a OC. He sucks and it is time for him to go, and if Richt can’t fire him and assume the OC duties then I hope McGarity is looking for his replacement. We as UGA fans deserve better than what we have seen the past 3 years. We will be lucky to keep the recruiting class we have much less sign any big time recruits. This is a joke and we have turned into the joke of the SEC. Great guy Richt is, but now that Donnan’s recruits are gone he can’t coach his way out of a paper bag. We suck and there is no other way to put it. We have great talent, but no one to coach them at a high level. Hell, even Tennessee looks better than we do. Even Vanderbilt looks good. We don’t want to hear anymore excuses. It’s time to turn the page and close the chapter on this book. We will be lucky to win 3 games this year with this sorry excuse of a coaching staff. Bobo should be terminated now for his sorry play calling and Richt is just as much to blame because, again he will not make the decision to fire him.

Bill, You hit the nail(s) on the head. Bobo was awful. The 3rd & 4 play call was the worse; that failed 1st down conversion seemed to take some air out of the dogs. He’s going to get Murray killed. If most bulldog fans can see Bobo’s deficiencies, why can’t a “head coach” not see it. Richt may take himself down by continuing to stick with Bobo.

One player does not make a team. Mark Ingram was out 2 games and UA just kept right on rolling. That’s called top rated recruiting and top rated coaching. That’s Richt faught if he gets fired, because when he overhauled the defense, he should have overhauled the offense. Bobo has been a screw up every year he has been in charge of the offense. Perfect example, when Applewhite was screwing up UA offense, Saban noticed immediatly that he needed a change and that only lasted a year. Make changes in a timely manor and keep on moving. …we continue our outstanding sideline dancing, led by none other than Mr. Hit and Run himself, Ealey, jumping up on the bench and just having some fun and not worrying too much about a 24-24 game….

…we’ve raised the “Bacarri Rambo hit, then fail to wrap up” tackle atempt to a true art form…

augusta dawg, if anyone has noticed its not just Bobo and Searles, our receiver don’t know how to seperate from the defenders and our RBs look like crap. Not top rated RBs, very overrated. That is the great Georgia talent. Try recruiting from around the country, not just the state of Georgia. We need to replace all the offensive coaches and we need to find some that know how to recruit because its apparent that the recruiting pholosophy is not working. We only have 3 subpar RBs and with the way we are playing, there’s no way in hell we will ge Crowell and if we do we need to bring in more than one RB.

UGA needs to show a NEBRASKA game film to its team. I just watched them whip Washington. They play well, kick butt…and act well. It’s called discipline and keeping things in perspective. I’m tired of seeing D players act like they scored and they’re in the NFL, after making a tackle at the line of scrimmage…I’m tired of watching WR & RB’s act like they’ve scored and they’re in the NFL, when they pick up a 1st down…I’m tired of the personal fouls (no matter what the other team is does), taunting and numerous of penalities. Our problems with Richt started when he left calling the plays!! With Bobo coaching the qb’s and Richt back to doing what he does best calling plays and Murray we would be a BEAST!!! I am sure some of you fans will think Bobo is no good but remember when he was a qb coach he had Green ready to play as a freshman!! He had Murray but he wasn’t ready why??? Because he was trying to run the offense and trying to coach the qb’s!! Demote Bobo back to qb coach where he will have our qb’s ready and Richt get back to doing what you do best call the plays. Time to get rid of him and find us a true offensive coordinator. Too predictable. And while Im venting, why can we not get good production out of our offensive line? Lack of coaching maybe? I’m sick of hearing about Bobo’s playcalling as the issue. If the offensive line doesn’t block, it doesn’t matter what plays you call. Same thing happens when receivers drop passers (’06-’07) or your QB makes bad throws (’09). Bobo may be to blame as the head guy on offense, but UGA’s offensive struggles over the past five years have come down to either talent or execution.

People often say we have too much talent to lose like this, these players are too good for that…

Perhaps these players are just overrated.

The backs look soft and slow, they dont make a cut and run with authority.

The line would have trouble opening a hole against South Gwinnett.

The defense can’t tackle. (they sure did facemask, though)

The qb overthrows, underthrows, holds the ball too long.

Blitz pickups are routinely missed.

Receivers or lineman routinely move in critical situations resulting in a 5 yard penalty.

Linebackers look slow and soft.

Lots of these players behave like they are Miami 86′ but play like Duke.

We appear to be in the middle of an unfortunate trifecta of subpar players, subpar coaching and subpar play calling.

OK, I’ll say this: I haven’t been on a ‘FIRE BOBO’ banwagon, but I did agree that Martinez needed to go (about 3 yrs before he did), and I know that Grantham needs the opprotunity to get this style players in there –the taller, bigger players–NFL types like Saban recruits. Martinez’s ‘D’ was ranked among the bottom in the SEC & Nationally. Now, back to Bobo –our ‘O is now among the bottom feeders in the SEC & probably nationally; the problem is that Bobo works from Richt’s playbook, and I don’t think Richt is incline to call plays again full-time (and be a head coach), and I can’t see him hiring an offensive cord. that has different plays than what he likes to run, so at this point I really don’t know what to think. I hate to think that Richt could loose his job over this mess, but I do know that if he can’t get things back on track & get UGA back in the hunt for SEC Championships every year that he will be gone eventually. I like Richt, and I hope he corrects this in a shorter time than he did the Defense –because I don’t think he will have 3 years to do it. Another scary thing I think about is recruiting; for the most part Richt & Bobo have gotten the players they have gone after, and they have all been highly ranked recruiting classes –much higher than Scouth Carolina & Arkansas, so go figure where the problem is….

Sat in my normal section 219 with my lady friend and I must disagree about Bobo. The offense scored 24 points without the Defense getting a turnover on the #12 team in the country with a Redshirt Fresh QB. Dawgs blame it on Bobo all you want but Grantham is all bluster with no talent. 3 busted coverages in the first 3 games. And Lakatos I thought was a great DB coach. The only thing wrong with the Offense is the O-line. People thought it would be the best in the conference, it was only the most experienced. It might also help if Bobo was in the press box.

This game is the summation of why Bobo must be let go. I honestly never thought he would go so far as to blame his quarterback. The offensive game plan for this game was to dominate the line with the ground game and through play-action set up the pass. However, that play action took WAY to long to develop and it wasn’t fooling the Arkansas D. Whenever they ran play action, Murray had one second to look down the field and throw to no open receivers. the last play we only needed 4 yards…yet all of Murray’s receivers were 20 yards down the field. Is that Murray’s fault too? When we did go Shotgun…Murray was right on the money. Bobo has shown me all I need to know now…He’s got to go!

Both of them were one dimensional and I expect both will be exposed sooner rather than later starting next week on CBS. Then folks will begin to understand just how weak UGA is this year. Just be thankful our out of conference game is with Colorado.
As for Murray? He is mediocre at best. Let’s be truthful. He is undersized, isn’t accurate with his passes, has trouble moving in the pocket, and only has average speed. The sad thing is that in this inept offense, he is the only highlight.

Bill, I think Richt was still calling the plays when Shockely was there. I believe Bobo started calling plays during the 2007 season. He actually did a descent job that year of calling plays but that was obviously a result of a great running back, QB, and oline that were on a roll. You could have drawn up plays in the dirt that year that would work.

It’s been obvious now for 3 years that Bobo is a terrible O.C. 92,000 fans in the stadium can see it, everyone at home can see it, a blind man can see it, so why can’t Richt????

This is not like the defensive problems we have. Richt is an offensive coach, we run his offense, and he can take over the play calling whenever he feels like it.

I personally think this year will define Mark Richts career. If he doesn’t take over the play calling, which I don’t think he will, then it’s time for change. Richt has always been bad about making the tuff decisions that need to be made. He desperately needs to make changes now, or we will continue to free fall.

Richt was hired to build this program back up. We are now right back where we were during the Golf years.

Reply to Right On Time. A great recruiting class, not over-rated. This is a good team with more than enough talent to play anyone. We have a very experience O-Line, great RB’s,FB’s,TE’s and a great Defense that is learning each week. Good D-Line,LB’s,CB’s and Safety’s. We have a young QB corp that needs to be coached properly. Because of some butt chewing, our QB now seems timid on when to run and took a big hit at the end of the game. COACHES!!, Do your job, coach the talent you have and stop trying to change them in 1 or 2 games. Arkansas was afraid of our QB whenever he rolled out of a play action or other schemes. Watch your game films and learn to use the talent you have and encourage it. Just a thought for you old-timers, when Roger Staubach joined the Cowboys, he had a tendency to take off running every time he thought he was in trouble, it drove opposing teams crazy also. Coach Landry was furious most of the time, but in time he taught Roger how to play the position, maybe some remember one of the nickname’s he was given en-route to the Super Bowls he played in the 70’s, Captain Comeback.

I wanted to laugh when I read the article with Bobo saying that the line didn’t block well and Murray held the ball too long. I guess the block head doesn’t have a clue that it’s his stupid play calling as well. He actually said that Murray held on to the ball too long on the last play. I guess it had nothing to do with his horrible play call. Sending receivers 20 yards deep with no outlet when you only need 4 yards. What a moron.

I would agree with most that our defense needs to improve, but unfortunately with converting to the 3-4 we arent going to be that great for another year or two, the guys have to learn it, and we have to recruit some beasts for 3 line positions. I thought AM looked great, for a redshirt freshman in his 3rd collegiate game, and his second in the SEC. Have faith….he will improve..and so will our D.

Where are the playmakers on offense, you mean we don’t have anyone on the sideline that can catch a hitch or screen and take it to the house? I’m am so embarrassed, we are losing to Kentucky, SC, Arkansas and prob. Miss State next week, blow it up and run all of them out of Athens. When was the last time we won a big game. 3rd and 4, late in the game, driving to kick a winning f.g. and we go deep. Takes too long to develop and we take a sack. The prevent defense, once again, prevents nothing and Ark, even if we do the unimaginable and actually MAKE the tackle on the last play, has moved from deep in their territory to field goal range in 30 seconds. Even if we make that last tackle, they still win on a field goal. Two lessons here: 1) the use of the tight ends would enable us to pick up 3rd and 4, keep the drive alive and kick our own winning f.g. as time ran out. and 2) the prevent defense, as is so often exposed in high school, college and the NFL, is a great way to enable a team to come down the field in minimal time and put themselves into a position to win. Why it’s called ‘prevent’ defies logic.
Another slow start to the season. Wondering why we ever recruit tight ends if we’re not going to use them.

One of Georgia Tech’s 330 pound NTs (T.J. Barnes) got quite a bit of playing time today and made some plays. Their problem is similar to Georgia’s in that the really big guys are young and relatively inexperienced. Barnes subbed some in their 4-3 last year.

I saw the offense which had the same feel as last week for 3 qtrs and then suddenly felt like they had some heart and an Identity. I do believe this team will get better as we go. Yeah this year is ruined for the conference, but I look for us to make some noise as the season goes on. I know some of you will say I’m a homer, but I am one that is one the fence with CMR. @soccerdawg — I will buy your season tickets. Despite the coaching problems, they can still turn things around. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those teams that figures things out 5 or 6 games into the season. It would be nice to see some receivers get some separation, catch a ball in stride and take it to the house. Instead, we seem to catch the ball and immediately fall to the ground.

A couple of points: the refs made a terrible mistake on that last sack of Murray. Bequette (sp) speared Murray helmet to helmet as bad as I have ever seen executed. He was pumped up, but the refs have to throw that flag, or somebody is going to get killed. I am amazed Murray didn’t get a concussion. After his helmet was ripped off Bequette was sure to grind his leg into Murray’s face. That was terrible. Second, I see where Bobo blamed that sack on Murray. The announcers blamed it on the call–that all the receivers went long and Murray had nothing short to throw (it was 3rd and 4). Also, Ealey waved pitifully at Bequette as he ran threw him to spear Murray. I would blame it first on Ealey, second on the call, and finally on Murray. Bequette needs to be talked to, and so does the NCAA. To be fair, they didn’t call Gamble’s cheap shot on Mallet, should have been thrown, even if Mallett was faking.

I am a lifelong Georgia fan. How can coaches like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Mack Brown, Lou Holtz and others win regardless of where they are coaching. Yet, Georgia has all these top recruits and can not win consistently. As I look back on the last 40 plus years of being a Dawg fan, I am now convinced that Georgia is just a middle of the pack team in the SEC with an occasional good season that raises the hope of the Bulldog nation that 1980 will happen again.

Where to begin? Send Bobo back to coaching QBs and let CMR take over the offensive play calling? Put Ealey’s butt on the boards until he learns how to block? Actually throw the ball to your tight ends…more than once a game?

I’m with you, Bill. I think some great players on offense in the past made Bobo look better than he was. Same with Coach Willie before he was jettisoned. We were so afraid to not promote Bobo because we were afraid he’d go somewhere else and beat us…kinda reminds me of Ray Goff’s promotion.

My turn…………….I am tired of hearing about who is missing……what about what we have that we are not using. Constant long pass attempts down the middle and nothing short at all……no screens, no using our tight ends, no runs to the outside……..and enough of this wildcat crap!!! Who are you fooling with that? Sorry coach but I don’t see you thinking outside the box. I see predictable play calling and so does the other sideline. And when is this offense line going to start blocking someone? These five suck to hell!!!! My guess is the blocking schemes are just as predictable and the play calling……

Look CMR, I know you are a good man and all that. I respect you for that. But this isn’t Walmart……..this is football……..Is loyalty and patience worth losing your job over? You do not have the coaches to keep sitting back and watching………time to get involved coach!

Remember your FSU teams during that 10-15 year run of greatness? Those teams just re-loaded every year. No matter who left or came in, FSU was going to be a top 5 team? You need those kind of coaches around you. Go get them before it’s too late!!!

OK, I’m finally on board in firing CMR. Since the Hawaii Sugar Bowl game this team has regressed. Richt has lost his fire. Maybe that happened when his wife got cancer, I don’t know. You can change all the coaches you want, but it starts at the top. UGA demands excellence, not mediocrity. Cut your losses now, find the next Saban.

dbc

September 18th, 2010
9:41 pm

From where I sit, part of Richt’s problem is a lack of a “take em to the woodshed” mentality. Every year, he talks about how SC is always a close game — and then it is — and that’s what he gameplans for. Same with a lot of other wins/loses. CMR is “thankful” to win by a point, rather than really beating a team like a drum. Saban wants to obliterate another team. Meyer ditto. They come out with that mindset. If the game ends up being closer, they still win, but they get mad. It’s not enough to beat your opponent these days — it’s how you beat them. I actually thought Richt grew a pair vs. FLA, three years ago. Then he got scolded by Meyer and he got all apologetic and hasn’t been the same since. Especially since the Bama blackout beatdown. Lately, CMR is all about “moral” victories. The last time UGA totally manhandled an opponent was Hawaii. And they weren’t that good, so it was easy to do. It’s like toughness is a sin to CMR. I’ve spent far too many brain cells trying to figure it out, but the Dawgs are a shell of whatever fearless team they used to be. And now Grantham alludes to the fact he was told by Richt to “tone it down” (he said so in an interview)? One can only conclude that Richt is soft. He just can’t hang with guys who are really willing to lay it all on the line. I know he says it’s different, but his record of late says otherwise. And I don’t think CMR is a man who will sell out his personal principles to get where he needs to be — which in a way is admirable — but it doesn’t produce winners, I’m ashamed to say. Tebow was the exception — and he was the good cop to Meyer’s bad. Who knows, but I get the feeling this whole thing can’t end well.

What makes it even worse is that the coaching staff has been talking about how they were going to bring Murray along slowly. They should be talking about how well Murray throws–no lie. By telling opposing DCs that they weren’t going to use Murray’s arm or overtask him, the coaches have made the DC’s job easier. Also, wouldn’t it be easier on Murray to let him operate out of a shotgun where he can see what is coming at him better?

What happened to my name is Coach Mike Bobo and I am going to have the QB throw to his HB or FB in the flat or on a screen….wait a short pass…..that would be normal play calling when it is 3rd and 4. Idiotic play calling would be sending all receivers on go patterns….Bobo won’t do that….wait Bobo is doing that. Did his bloody nose cause him to forget that we have one of the best kickers in college football. Did he forget that we only need 2 first downs on 3rd and 4 to get in field position, and have a great comeback win after a miserable performance for 3 1/2 quarters. Did he forget simple pass plays to help a young QB out. It reminded me of the Miss. St vs Auburn game last week when Miss St has a chance to win/tie the game with a FG and guess what they did 4 go routes….when they are on the 50 yard line….brainless. I am tired of Bobo and I love Richt as a person, I spent an evening at his house in college, but he has got to learn to call timeouts better, fire coaches who simply are not skilled at their job. I mean a timeout would be appropriate when your defense is running around confused and Mallett is getting ready to throw a game winning TD…..I mean you DVR fans, go watch that play, at least 4-5 guys are still getting lined up when Mallett snaps the ball………grow some Richt and over rule Grantham, Bobo, etc, call timeouts when it is needed (ironically, we waste them, yet don’t call them when the game is on the line and we are not ready). Done. Take a chance, fire Richt, Bobo and Hire Kirby Smart…..and and offensive expert and lets go from there.

One is a starter for bama and the other gets about 15-20 mns a game at AU. I have been saying our strength coach was problem for yrs with all the injuries we were getting every team gets the injury bug every now and then but for like 6 yrs in a row we have had a ton of ACL and Shoulder problems. I am a strength coach and weak hamstrings and unbalanced muscles can cause those injuries. Hamstring pulls come from muscles not being balanced like being quad dominant which can cause hamstring pulls and ACL tears. Plus we are small and slow it is fine to be small but then we need to be fast our LB and safeties are not explosive when they tackle we look scared sometimes

Since we beat Hawaii we have progressively gotten worse. Stafford and moreno should have won at least one SEC title but bad defensive coaching and bad play calling by bobo cost us that. with stafford at QB our defense gave up 35 points or more nine times that did not happen once for Green and DJ. We need some top LB recruits we have not had a great college LB since WILL W. and BOSS B. Curran was good but not like them Curran was good at running down sweeps but you could run it right at him with ease. TN will beat us bc they are going to try to run it all day and i dont think we can stop it.

Luckily we have better athletes than MS state bc they definitely have the coaching edge on us. Mullen is a great coach and we are about to face the best defensive line we have seen. Our o line is below average and our RB’s are not SEC caliber backs they do not make plays Ealey got tackle so many time by the first person and there were so many times that he could have bounced it outside but chose to try to run over someone which he cant do and what p1ssed me off is when after he scored to tie it up he just had to run his mouth like he had been playing great then on our next drive we do a great playaction but he whiffs on the LB who ends up sacking Murray. Ealey should have hit him in the mouth but instead the guy who was just running his mouth chose to dive at his feet like a man meet his a66 in the hole and drive him back

Okay, the good, the bad, and the ugly all the way from CA….logics first: Aaron Murray: he is good but just immature, can not do any thing about that, he is good and will grow up: Mike Bobo: why? Really why? Is it sentiment? Can’t figure this out and it offends all of us who try to think things through. Reminds me of the whole Willie Martinez thing last season, in fact, that will probably happen this year. Anyway, moving on, Mark Richt. I think it would be best if he would best be a Christian somewhere else other than here. He could take his family to a mission somewhere else where he really wants to be and that is great. We all have our passion but his arrogance and a word a can’t even spell with spellcheck, well, maybe it would be best if he took it to somewhere else, as I said before. Why are the plays so long to progess? Aaron would be best served if someone would take a stopwatch and time him for 3 seconds to get rid of the ball. Thats it. Teach him that. Why does the most experienced offensive line in college football currently, have such a hard time opening holes for the running back AND protecting the quarterback? Be careful UGA: make all the excuses you want, just look at your record so far. Some lame excuses will come out from the team, “We need to score.”, blah blah blah. Take a look at what is really is happening. I love UGA and will be moving back to Athens this week. So much for logic. Passion triumphs and we don’t have it, we put it in the hands of someone who doesn’t really get it. Guess who?

Murray looked great except for holding on to the ball to long a couple of times to long but he is a freshman our receivers looked good to. I am tired of UGA fans making excuses saying we are to young or to many injuries guess what this is college football every 3-4 yrs the players leave and every team deals with injuries. Bama, Fl and TN are young playing over 10 freshman a piece we are playing 2 on special teams. We are not a young team. We are just an average team and it sucks but some UGA fans wont except that they say we are playing great teams and this and that AR has no defense or running game BAMA will crush them and SC will end losing at least 3 or 4 games to somebody. If we had Mullen, Saban, Meyer, Chizick, Stong coaching us we are 3-0 right now

Why so much play action? A freshman QB needs time to read the defensive backs. Murray has his back turned to the defense while faking a run up the middle (which everyone in the stands knows isn’t scaring any defense) and he is losing time to make a choice. He works best out of the shotgun. By putting him in the gun he has more time to decide. Murray is still adjusting to the speed of the game and a little coaching smarts would help him.

Murray is a redshirt freshman. He’s been in the system for more than a season. He has the playbook. The problem is implementing the playbook under fire. Plus, we all agree there isn’t much to the playbook, or at least the selection of plays from it.

Richt was adamant last year that it would be wasting Murray’s talent to play him instead of Cox once the season was toast. So, that decision has cost us two wasted seasons instead of one. I have to believe Murray would be much better this year with significant game experience from last year. It was a big time mistake to intentionally start two consecutive seasons with inexperienced QBs.

Biggest rhythm killer is that idiotic WILDDAWG. You take a big chance by taking the ball away from your QB who has been handling all of the snaps and intrust it to someone who just lines up 5 yds back of center, because they get inside the red zone-idiots, what a joke. Holding Murray down again the first half before opening it up with him back in the shotgun after half-time. Did Murray really hold on to the ball too long? Really, you’re down by 14 points and the kids back there trying to make a play, because throwing the ball away sure isn’t going to put any points on the board. They should sack the 3-4 for the remainder of the season. They just don’t have the personnel to run it correctly. What happened to Rambo? Did having his brain scrambled last year make him timid? This is not a team, these are a bunch of individuals playing in the same style of jerseys. Put CMB back up in the booth and have CMR send in the plays. Murray throws less than 30 passes in back to back games losses. He should be throwing the ball at least 35 to 40 times a game when you’re trying to play catch up. Why run the ball and use up the clock? Pass the dang thing to TE’s and RB’s underneath if nothing is open. Well, one more loss and Murray will tie the total number he experienced in his H.S. career. Gee, I wonder if he’s second guessing himself? He had 50 some offers at the end of his junior year. Maybe the coaches will get out of Murray’s way and let him play! If so, maybe he can say their jobs.

No Ms. Hayes I am not. Look at all Bobo has done with his expert playcalling, the development of a great Freshman QB, a stub OL and great wideouts. Who could do more, in fact the wildcat today was brilliantly executed, he had a sound game plan, good playcalling and a motivated team. Look for great things from Bobo and I am glad he will be at my school for many years.

No, I don’t think they would hire a fired Richt. Not right away anyway.

But I do think their are eight teams that would have stood to upgrade their coaching position if they swapped with Georgia before the season.

Imagine Richt losing his job and getting hired at LSU is a couple years…I shudder to think of that.

The only thing keeping LSU down is their tendency to hire morons. Please don’t hand them a good coach.

Please.

I like the Gruden idea. He stockpiled all this talent in Tampa. Did such a good job, they lowered ticket prices and blacked out all the games. What a genius. They had a waiting list for season tix, but Johnny G solved that one too, now you can get 50 yard line 10 mins before kickoff. If UGA agress to hire him, the whole Gator Nation will take turns lugging his butt up to Athens. We could hail it as the second Goff dynasty. Make sure you put that on your holiday wish list.

New defense or not, that defense at the end of the game was much worse than Willie’s ever was. There’s no discipline at all. I’m not worried about Murray. He’s a freshman and it’s overwhelming and he’ll become more comfortable. But Bobo’s playcalling is just awful. You can literally tell what play he’s about to run when they set up their formation. Bobo called an excellent game. Chapas was not playing. King was out. Green didn’t play. Branden Smith didn’t play. A lot of offensive firepower was gone. But Bobo’s offense put up 24 points, and 400 yards on an SEC defense with all the key weapons out: RB, WR, FB. Murray got sacked 6 times, and ran 14 more times for 9 yards, that’s like 20 plays on Murray, because he didn’t throw the ball away or hit a checkdown. Bobo might have to give Mason a shot, Mason has a quick release and rarely is sacked. That’s an extra 20 plays a game.

Bobo called 41 passing plays, and about 26 running plays, Murray tucked it and ran on 14 of those 41 passing plays so they looked like running calls in the stats, but Murray didn’t get 10 yards rushing on the 14 plays, would have liked to have seen 14 running plays called for the RB’s on those 14 plays instrad of Murray, since Ealey and Thomas both got 5 a carry, while Murray averaged less than 1 yard a carry.

You cannot win the SEC throwing the ball. When will Bobo learn this.

On the last series where georgia had the ball and all the timeouts, I’d like to have seen running calls, since Arkansas was in a pass defense. But calling all passing plays flopped. Trust Ealey & Thomas & King & the O-Line, you won’t win an SEC game without them.

Kind of sad when coaches talk trash about the players.. Mike Bobo is pathetic in blaming Murray, he is only a freshman, Bobo doesn’t even take responsibilities for his own bad calls, just blame everything on others. CMR doesn’t want to fire Bobo, for whatever the reason, maybe they are close friends or Bobo has 5 kids… CMR needs to man up and hire someone who understands offense. UGA is such a program where you coach down and minimize the players talent… I mean that is what has been happening for years, if I was a recruit UGA would be the last place I would go…

Agree that the playcalling was bad and baffling at times, but execution makes any play call look like genius when it works. But the trend continues – fans complain about Georgia’s assistant coaches when things go wrong – Fabris, Martinez, and now Bobo. They can’t all be idiots. It’s time to put the blame where it belongs – on Mark Richt’s shoulders. He’s the captain of this ship. He’s also supposed to be an offensive guru, so it’s quite possible that the offense is more a reflection of his failings than Bobo’s. Remember, Richt wasn’t exactly lighting it up as a playcaller when he handed the offense to Bobo. Bottom line, it’s up to the head coach to have the right assistants handling the right duties, and that’s obviously not happening at UGA.

It’s looking more and more like the Richt era at UGA has run its course.

With 2:28 to go, Georgia got the ball in great field position with all timeouts.

1st play- Ealey runs for 10 yards.
2nd play- Murray sacked for 4 yard loss
3rd play–thomas runs for 10 yards

I’d have kept running it, it was there for 10 yards a pop. 3 more runs, kick the field goal, Georgia wins.

But, Bobo abandoned the run, went to the pass, which wasn’t working, put the game in Murray’s legs, which wern’t working, and lost the game.

Next time, when a team’s in a pass defense and you got timeouts and 2 minutes to go, and you’re getting 10 yards a run, and -4 a pass, RUN THE BALL!!

I assure you Bobo will not get an extension, but to fire him and pay 1 year salary, plus hire a high priced Asst, is just not going to happen. I don’t mean to hog space here (no pun intended), but it is far more likely we can force Richt to retake the Offensive play calling (and OC operations), and demote Bobo to QB coach again. Much like Steve (Spurrier) did with his son.

while there are many things i could address..i will state one that is very important based on what i have seen…doesn’t have anything to do with Coach Bobo’s play calling, which at times is mind boggling…but i remember in 1979 we lost at home to virginia 31-0..the next year we got a stud of a RB and won the NC..there is a young man down in South Ga that we need very much, no not a Hershel Walker but one darn good back with speed and power…To me this is something that the dawgs need is that game breaker to go along with the other weapons we have…If we can get him and with what we have committed so far the next few years could be great…However, with that being said i’m not sure if the dawg nation will be patient another year with the current coaching staff..i think the defense will be fine and very good in time, but this offense and the lack of consistant production unfortunately has to be put on the coacheBut s..Yes the kids have got to make plays, hold blocks, acutually block someone, catch the ball and make good decisions just to name a few things…But i don’t think we are using the talent we have as well as we could, especially the tight ends….One ball thrown their way today…none to O.Charles..Again if we can get a great RB as SC did last year and you can see how that opens the offense up even more…I know we have some good RB’s but i don’t think they get the respect that the young man from South Ga will get…

Bobo said the sack on the last 3rd & 4 play was Murray’s fault because he held the ball too long. I was at the game and haven’t had a chance to see the replay, but it seemed like the defensive player came around the end completely unblocked (who missed him? TE? RB?) and was on top of Murray as soon as he finished his drop back. Maybe it was more obvious on TV replays that Bobo is right about Murray taking too long on the play – even if the actual play called was a poor choice. But, if it happened the way I saw it and Bobo threw Murray under the bus with a bad play call and then ran over top of him by claiming it was all Murray’s fault, Bobo should be at home tonight explaining to his wife and kids why he no longer has a job. Will someone who saw the replay clarify the play for me?

Unfortunately MR taking over the playcalling is unlikely to make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. A lot of us seem to forget that the whole reason Bobo was promoted to playcalling duty in the first place is that fans were not happy with MR’s playcalling and his seeming inability to manage other parts of the game when he was calling plays.

I don’t really blame Mike Bobo…this program has gone stagnant in general over the last few years..and to all the rose glassed koolaid drinkers who want to excuse MR due to a new QB and Def Coordinator…who decided to stick with a mediocre senior QB all last season rather than trying to get a future starter some playing time?

Who kept his buddy as DC for several years for several years of failure…for that matter who promoted Willie in the first place rather than looking for someone established when Van Gorder left?

The fact is…all the weaknesses of this team this year that MR apologists are using as excuses..are directly MR’s fault. How many “rebuilding” years is this team going to go through? Next year the excuse is going to be having to totally remake the Offensive Line..which should be fun with the failed recruiting on that front for years…

In the 4th Quarter, Bobo passed too much, got away form the run, got too predictible.
1st drive–4 passes, 2 rushes
2nd drive–6 passes, 0 rushes
3rd drive–3 passes, 2 rushes
4th drive–2 passes, 2 rushes

That’s 15 pass play calls, and 6 rushing calls.

You won’t win many SEC games with that kind of playcalling in the the quarter.

4th drive was particularly puzzling, because Carlton and Wshaun both got 10 yards a carry on that drive, defense was geared to stop the pass, so why pass when you only needed a field goal to win and you’re moving the ball on the ground at 10 yards a carry?

O-Line is frustrated with Murray, he’s not making fast decisions. Need to throw it in 3 seconds to an open receiver, or out of bounds. Stop getting sacked so much, and holding onto the ball because he’s trying to be a hero. I’d like to see Hutson Mason get some snaps. I hear he’s impossible to sack because he’s decisive and has a trigger release.

Throwing Murray under the bus on a clear bad play call and whiff block by Ealey should get him demoted or fired immediately.

I personally think the D will be great under Grantham in 3-4 years. He is playing with players that does not fit his and Laktos scheme at all. Laktos prefers tall corners vs. Willie’s short corners and we know the D Line is not an ideal 3-4 line.

Bobo please, if Murray can’t fun the whole playbook after being at UGA for a year and half then that is the coaches fault. You see what a smart offense does is get playmakers in space and get them the ball on short routes and let them make plays. Makes Petrino look like a genius and Mallet look all world. All he has to do throw the ball 5 yards most of the time and the playmakers do the rest.

Can’t blame Bobo for taking the job or the money…but you can blame MR for being happy with the status quo.

Really playcalling is just one symptom of the overall mediocrity and complacency that seems to be the UGA program over the last few years. Reminds me a lot of Clemson under Tommy Bowden…a nice guy that the press and fans like, recruits pretty well, surrounds himself with former FSU buddies, and in the end…is allowed to stick around longer than he should have just because he’s a nice guy.

Some on this blob are criticizing Grantham and I for one think you are dead wrong. Not one recruit belongs to Grantham and UGA defense are all having to learn the 4-3 . When you make that radical of a change we have to expect some problems. What I saw today was a much improved defense that didn’t miss many tackles . I didn’t see but a few body and arm tackles. If UGA tackled last week like they did today UGA would have beaten SC. So I applaud the improvement on defense . We have to give Grantham time to recruit and for the new defense to work. Mallet is one of the best Quarterbacks in the nation and will go in the first 10 chosen in this years draft.
Now Bobo is a different story . He has been here long enough to make better calls on offense than he does. Surely CMR see’s that Bobo need to go.

I hate to say this because I love the Dawgs. But they are suffering from poor coaching in all areas of the game, except the D line. I love Richt but he and the staff appear to been out matched/coached the last two weeks and the last few seasons. New secondary coach and the D backs can not cover or takle. Special teams are poorly coached and are not desciplined. The offense is simply a mess. The O line either does not know how to block or refuses to block, and that was alledegdly the strenth of the team.

When Willie was fired, Richt said, he was the steward of the program and it was his obligation to make the changes. Now it appears that Richt should be held to his own standard.

If I heard that comment once, I heard it a million. Sure seems like the only option right now is for Richt to go back to calling plays – although I doubt if anything will get this ox out of the ditch. What’s so disheartening is that we overhauled our defensive coaching staff and this is all we have to show for it, and now it’s patently obvious that the O-staff has to be replaced. Pretty sad commentary, don’t you think?

Well, maybe the Braves will give us something to hope for over the next month or so, cause we sure can’t look forward to much with the Dogs. We look about as bad as I can remember.

As for Mr. Green, out of frustration last night I posted that since we very well may lose all three of these games he’ll be suspended for – including Miss State next Saturday – then why not make a statement to him and others that may not realize that pulling your head out of your ass is part of the deal when it comes to being here, and just kick him the hell to the curb. Tell him goodbye and we hope he has a good life in the pros, cause his stupidity managed to make sure that the University of Georgia had the worst season of the last twenty years. 2 weeks in a row BOTH these Numbnuts have FAILED to show up.

WHY ?

Lose to an Arky team who is going to lose 3 games this season. That is NOT a top team. They play a weak schedule and will be soundly beat by any good team. We’re not 1 of those. AGAIN.

Our quarterback has 9 sacks in his first 2 SEC games, an interception, a fumble and 1 touchdown throwing and 1 running.

He also made a lot of mistakes

The 3rd down and 4 after the predicable run the previous play, was obvious pass play, one Aaron Murray had to know he had to get rid of. After all he already had had bone-jarring sacks, 5 of them already in the game. I wasn’t sure he was going to get up on some of them. When Aaron Murray took that 8-yard sack, we punted with 54 seconds left in a tie game at HOME vs Arky. 3 plays later, we had lost our 2nd game in 2 weeks both SEC games.

Please insert your excuses why a coaching staff in year 10 of this regime has failed once again to prepare our Quarterback. Such as we will be a LOT BETTER NEXT YEAR losing 15 seniors & 4-5 juniors after this season.

Uh, no we won’t.

BUCK BELUE, someone ask him why he REMOVED his blog of 9/17/10 about Dawg fans should get behind this “coaching staff” of Coach Richt and that there are not a thousands of better Offensive Coordinators than Mike Bobo.

Please do not tell me Aaron Murray is great, or that we will be better next year.

We are 0-2 in The SEC for the 1st time since 1993.

This Coach Richt “coaching staff” is the WORST COACHING STAFF IN AMERICA all 10 years.

Coach Richt, sir, you are going to LOSE YOUR JOB and the reason will have NOTHING to do with PRAYING

NOTHING to do with you being a NICE GUY

It will ONLY be because of your “coaching staff” the entire Coach Richt 10-Year Era.

Who gives a shiiete if we win 6 of the next 7 games. THERE IS NOT 1 even REASONABLE opponent in ANY of those games. Oh, Florida is REASONABLE team ? Really ? 2-7 vs them ANYWAY. Then, Auburn. Does anyone really think Georgia’s “coaching staff” of Coach Richt is better than Auburn’s coaching staff ? Is our Quarterback BETTER than Cam Newton ? No.

He has MORE GAMES of 1-yard RUSHING or LESS, than EVERY FOOTBALL PLAYER EVER.

I want to make sure I have this correct. Coach Richt said ALL WEEK THIS WEEK on the Coach Richt Show that “I do not get in the way of the players preparing themselves pregame for a game. They know how to do that best for themselves. As long as their music isn’t too loud, I let them do whatever they want and I do not get in their way.”

Where are our great Tight ENDS!! We needed several short gains and we went to the tight ends ONCE! We have to utilize our talent and we are not. That’s why Murray got sacked on that last play before the defensive meltdown. We needed a quick pass all day.

Homer, GA :

Last week, in hostile environment, Aaron Murray called hand signal check out of the play called from the sidelines.

This week, he did not do that at all.

We threw 0 completions to Orson Charles who had a GREAT GAME. He will be drafted in the NFL Draft and go on to be a Starter in the NFL for a Decade.

We have a darth of depth at receiver position.

Our O.C. did not throw a single completion to Orson Charles.

And,

BUCK BELUE ran a blog yesterday, which he has since REMOVED

saying that we all have to be behind Mike Bobo.

That there are not thousands of better offensive coordinators

When are we going to wake up. A change needs to be made in Athens and it is at the top. CMR is great guy but blames the coaches and now players. This is wrong. You have to be capable to motivate your players in order to compete in games. This just has not been the case for his whole tenure. The play call on third and 4 at the end was unbelievable. No relief receiver to help the young quarterback out. Keep in mind we only need 4 yards. Bobo says he just held the ball to long. CMR was on the sideline. Why does CMR not walk over and ask Bobo what play are you running here? The announcers say look at CMR and say he is a cool customer. That will be his downfall. Let me also add our fans using A.J. Green as an excuse for the last two loses are insane. We have top recruits every year. UGA does not rely on one player to win. It sickens me to have to agree with a Tech fan earlier.

BoBo made the boo boos!!!!

September 19th, 2010
7:30 am

Bobo made the boo boos all day long and especially in the fourth quarter. He just can’t do it.
No imagination, no trickery, just so predictable that everyone knows what is coming. You can read him like a book. Richt stopped too soon in the coach firing…Boo Boo Bobo should have gone with Martinez. I’ve been a huge Mark Richt supporter but I am near the end of my patience with him. I am tired of excuses, no passion, friendship and loyalty above winning. I would jerk Bobo’s chain so hard it would take a week for him to get it back into place. Georgia will never win big with BooBoo and I am beginning to think they will never win big with Richt. I think Bobo needs to go now and Stacy probably needs to be on the same bus with him. CMR, the bulldog nation demands more than you and your staff are currently giving them. It’s time to put up or shut up. It’s time to win or go.

We’re missing the little things. Yes, I think Bobo is overmatched when it comes to play-calling in the SEC. But the bottom line yesterday is that we put ourselves in position to win. When we got their, we did a pathetic job of managing the situation. With the best place-kicker in the nation we call a time-out at 1:04 on 3rd and 4. We should have been thinking: let the clock run, run one more play to make 10 yards and kick for the win; or worse case go to OT. The key being don’t lose it by giving Ark the ball with time. It was in our hands and we handed it back. Richt is right, we didn’t finish…coach.

AJ Green only played 8 games last year

Some of those, he was not able to play the whole game

14-game season

We played 13

He played parts of 8

AJ Green is NOT our problem.

Crowell had SCHEDULED to be with the other recruits at the GAME

CROWELL cancelled

I am NOT agreeing with any Georgia tek fan; they LOST to Kansas

I do NOT measure the # 11 Football Program in America with Georgia tek

If I did, we are 8-1

I do NOT

I measure us in terms of the fact that BEFORE this season, the previous 4 years, Coach Richt found

18 teams whom he does NOT have more wins than

It is a larger group than that now.

This 2nd 5 years of the Coach Richt Era

SUCKS

CMR don't have much passion

September 19th, 2010
7:36 am

Where is the fire, the passion, the leave it all on the field play? CMR don’t have any passion and if he does, it is never demonstrated. I hate to say it and it is most difficult to say but it may be time for Coach Richt to go. I am tired of the street thugs, undisiciplined, going through the motion players I see on the current Georgia team. I would probably tell A.J. Green he might as well take the rest of the year off. He sold out the Georgia season for a thousand dollars. That’s how much UGA and his team meant to him. I have no respect for A.J. Green and I am losing a lot of respect for CMR. By the way, Bobo needs to go. Blaming a freshman quarterback for your coaching failure don’t sit well with me. He will be given another miserable year before his tail is canned. Mike Bobo is the worst OC in the SEC and maybe the nation. The losing is bad but the poor coaching makes it difficult to swallow. How many people here think Bobo needs to go this season?

Our own fan base is more sour on the program than I have seen since the Ray Goff years. I said it the last 2 weeks and I say it again…. Our program is not considerd a top tier program anymore, we are a middle of the pack SEC program (even though we are last in the SEC, I have to think we will reach the middle of the pack later this year).

We need to ajust our expectations a bit instead of expecting to win the nashional championship every year. We have a good team and things can only go up from hear. WE MUST KEEP OUR HEADS UP AND KEEP IT REAL PEOPLE. JUST STOP ALL THE COMPLAINING…….

67-YARD FIELD GOAL ?

God Almighty Chris.

Just shut up.

Ball is on 50-yard line. 3rd and 4 with 1:04 left.

You have to snap the ball back 7 yards from there. That’s 57 yards and the goal posts are 10-yards back, in case you haven’t looked recently. Like the last 141 years. We must have a first down. It is 4-down territory in a TIE game at HOME. We have 2 plays to make 4 yards.

UGA fans that are illusional? Every year they hype themselves up to believe they will compete with the better football programs in the country. Every year by the 2nd game of the season they’re yelling to fire the coaches. Every year they beat their chests about recruiting 4 and 5 star players. Every year by the 2nd game they realize their players are inferior to the other teams.

Football is all about TRADITION!!! Spurrier established it at Florida, Bear established it at Alabam, John McKay, did at USC, Paterno at Penn. State. UGA your tradition HAS NEVER been established. Vince Dooley as good a man as he is DIDN’T get it done!!!

Changes will come and I expect that at season’s end ………….we will see some ‘”resignations” or our right firings ……….by McGarity. At a minimum ……….I expect to see Sereals and Bobo and the running backs coach gone. Brian McClendon is the r back coach and that is really dumb ………….he has on the job training at UGA and is not quailified. Bobo and Tracy S are also failures. UGA gets ALL the great talent according to 960 the ref in Athens and the Banner Herald. It seems they get the number one position at linebacker, O-line, D-line, quarterback, D-back. I’m a Tech fan, but Georgia will clean the field with Miss St next week. I cannot believe that some of you think that Georgia will lose. Some of you guys need to remember your comments that Tech going down there and winning against the bottom of the SEC, was expected and did not show the strength nor class of the SEC. Either 1) you misunderstood what I said or 2) you don’t know what you are talking about. Before I explain let me ask you a question. How did what we did work out for us, huh? My whole point is managing the clock is part of good coaching and we didn’t need 1:04 to get the yards we needed to get for the potential winning kick. I didn’t say try to kick it 67 yards. My point was let the clock run down as far as we could from 1:04 before calling the timeout (we had 2 time outs). Petrino would have been satisfied to go to OT so he wouldn’t have stopped the clock. We only needed 10 yards to get us in field goal range. 57 hit from 65 yards in warm-ups kicking towards the bridge; and I was sitting in Sanford Stadium when Butler kicked one from 100,000 miles to beat Clemson in 1984, so I had thoughts of the same kind of finish. Bottom line is, all things being equal, if we had run some time off before the third down play, ARK gets it after a punt with maybe 10-15 seconds left.

We need to blow up the rest of the coaching staff we blew up the defense last year. Bobo and Searles need to be fired, the strength and conditioning people need to be fired. Then if we are still bad next year, with a second year DEF scheme and a second year QB, maybe Richt is the problem. Right now though, I am willing to blame Bobo and a new defensive that actually looked much better than a week ago.

bobo is terrible. he’s been terrible for years. it wasnt as obvious in past years because martinez’s got all of the bad headlines. [which he deserved]. now that the defense is better everyone is realizing that our offensive play calling is horrendous. when he needs to be creative, he calls it simple. when he needs to be simple, he tries to be creative. we have no effective short yardage plays. why we dont have murray roll out on 3rd and short is beyond me. and why are the tight ends not the focal point without aj???? charles is a match-up nightmare, but we refuse to isolate him against inferior defenders. and white is a great pass cathcing TE lining up on the line. white and charles should both be on the field the majority of the game. bobo gets the least out of the talent around him. with stafford, moreno, massaquoi, and green we should have scored 50 a game. with this group we should be able to muster at least 30 a game. we need a new offensive staff if we ever want to capitalize on these incredible players.

Gabulldawg47

Amen, The play calling was awful all day long, not just the 4th quarter. Earlier in the game GA had the ball on the AK side of the 50, 3rd and 1, and Bobo calls for a 20 yard pass downfield that fell incomplete. We should have let Bobo go with Martinez.

Alpharetta Jon

September 22nd, 2010

Last year everyone was concerned with Defense and pointing the finger at Martinez when we should have been asking ourselves why is the defense always out there on the field. The problem was Bobo’s poor play calling and it still is. Yeah, he looks great when a reciever pulls down a bomb but how often does that happen? Once maybe twice a game? We’re throwing bombs when we need to be throwing 5 or 10 yard passes for a first down. Hey Mike! A short pass has a higher percentage of being caught than a bomb does you idiot! I could easily call a better game offensively. This article is finally saying what I’ve been saying for two years and I’m glad someone finally wrote it. Last year, you could have fired Bobo or Martinez and old Willie got the ax. Should have been both of them. People just don’t get it though. A slow driving offense is defensive in that it keeps the other team off the field. Duh! Just look at the Falcons under June Jones. Yeah, they could score points and tons of yardage quickly with the pass but their defense would get worn out from being on the field too long and would get beat in the end. I’m convinced and certain that Bobo is not an offensive genius and is not good for UGA. If Mark doesn’t do something about him soon it will be a really bad year. Mark needs to get involved in the play calling and do some more polishing on his protoge.
