Gamecocks ‘exposed’ Dogs’ weaknesses on offense and defense

Jakar Hamilton slides off again. (Gerry Melendez / The State)

Jakar Hamilton slides off again. (Gerry Melendez / The State)

A few more thoughts on Saturday’s loss in Columbia …

Georgia losing to South Carolina wasn’t a surprise to me. I’d picked that game as one of two predicted losses in the preseason. What was a surprise to me, though, was how bad the Dogs looked at times in losing it, particularly the running game and tackling.

It certainly didn’t help that Caleb King was sidelined with a bad ankle and that Washaun Ealey coughed up the ball, but it looked like the main blame for the ineffective rushing attack was our highly overrated offensive line. I think the great fallacy is that just because our line is experienced that they ought to be really good. So far it isn’t turning out that way.

I’ll grant that the OL did do a pretty good job in pass protection. Aaron Murray got flushed out a few times, but mostly had plenty of time in the pocket. But the line simply wasn’t opening up holes for Ealey. Most of his success came running outside — which makes you wonder why Mike Bobo didn’t exploit that more. Those second-down runs up the middle weren’t fooling anyone.

And a 27 percent conversion rate on third down will nearly always mean you lose. As Bobo and Mark Richt conceded after the game, they’ve got to give Murray the opportunity to make something happen offensively when the running attack isn’t going anywhere.

At the same time, Murray’s got things he needs to work on. Don’t stand there and take a sack when you can throw the ball away! And he’s still tending to either overthrow or throw slightly behind his receivers, which resulted in Orson Charles missing what could have been a scoring pass in the red zone.

Field goals weren’t enough to beat South Carolina, and they certainly won’t cut it next week Between the Hedges. As Richt noted, in order to have a chance at beating Arkansas, “we’re going to have to score points.”

As for the defense, one of the first things I read about the 3-4 scheme back in the winter was that its main weakness is against the run and it requires dominating play at nose guard. The latter, we certainly didn’t have, and Carolina’s terrific freshman back Marcus Lattimore quickly wore down the Georgia D. Could conditioning maybe have been a factor there? Check out this Lattimore quote: “Our offensive line was in better shape than their defensive line.”

Despite Steve Spurrier’s tongue-in-cheek tweaking of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham over the former NFL coach perhaps not being familiar with the inside zone running play that was the Gamecocks’ bread and butter Saturday, Georgia’s defense actually had players in the right position most of the time. They just didn’t execute. As Grantham indicated after the game, Lattimore is good, but Georgia’s poor tackling made him look even better. And it wasn’t just Lattimore. Missed tackles on screen passes hurt the Dogs, too.

Too many times you saw Georgia defenders going for what Bacarri Rambo called a “kill shot,” where they tried to take the ball carrier down by slamming into him with a body block instead of wrapping him up. There were also way too many arm tackles up high instead of taking him out low. And I lost count of how many times Jakar Hamilton slid off a ball carrier like they were greased. Demarcus Dobbs nailed it when he said, “We didn’t get in position to make tackles. He exposed us.” As Justin Houston put it: “That should be one of our main focuses next week.”

While Georgia’s defense looked pretty hapless in the first half, they actually did a much better job of containing Lattimore and the Gamecocks in the second half … until that last drive, where Carolina started on its own 37 with 8:19 left and Georgia’s offense didn’t get back on the field until only 1:05 was left. The most damning thing about that drive is that there was absolutely no mystery to what South Carolina was doing. Lattimore got the ball on eight of the 11 plays. And yet the Dogs still couldn’t stop him, giving up 66 yards to the admittedly tired freshman in that series.

What else was there for Georgia fans to complain about? How about the Dogs squandering all three of their second-half timeouts by midway through the third quarter? And while he’s holding on to the ball, Branden Smith looks like he still needs more coaching as a returner. Someone please tell him you don’t run backwards deep in your own territory.

On the plus side, as I noted Saturday, the best thing about Georgia’s defense was the pressure they kept up on Carolina QB Stephen Garcia, who had some success throwing to Alshon Jeffrey but generally was most effective just handing off to Lattimore. Ace pass rusher Houston is living up to his hype, with 10 tackles Saturday, three of Georgia’s five sacks and forcing a fumble. The Dogs are going to need Houston to come up big again if they’re going to have a chance against Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.

Also encouraging was the team drawing only four penalty flags for 25 yards (though another false start on a failed third-down play was declined by the Gamecocks).

And Murray showed a lot of potential. Too bad his receivers didn’t do a better job of getting open and helping him out in A.J. Green’s absence.

Bottom line: The Dogs have a lot of work to do if they want to avoid starting out 0-2 in conference play.

Feel free to share your own thoughts the good and bad you saw Saturday.

I am disappointed in the play of our offense. I new going in that Carolina would move the ball but i felt with our o-line we would be more affective than they would. Once again UGA is behind the eight ball. Its an eye opener to what the potential of our Dawgs really is.

I’m not so sure SC is really that good. Actually, it seems that we watched a poor excuse for a Georgia team yesterday get beat by a mediocre SC team. Just a few months ago SC got beat down in their bowl game by who was it? UConn? Richt has lost his edge. Period.

FIRE MARK RICHT! FIRE MIKE BOBO! FIRE TODD “SON OF WILLIE” GRANTHAM! This is the most pathetic group of coaches in college football. They waste more talent in one year than a team like TCU gets in 15 years. The new AD needs to bring in a coaching staff dedicated to producing championship football. Otherwise, let’s drop the ticket prices to something more in line with the product on the field. I can’t believe it’s been nearly 30 years since my Dawgs have even sniffed a MNV game. Even harder to believe is that the administration hasn’t done anything about it. UGA football- what a joke.

My biggest disappointment was the comments by Richt and Bobo about protecting Murray. Hell, this is the SEC! What are trying to protect him from? A sad commentary of how far the program has fallen in the last 3 years…I was at the Sugar Bowl for the beat down of Hawaii and thought UGA was the team of the future…it has taken so many steps back now that I’ll watch from my living room, not gonna waste my time and effort to attend in person anymore…

Lattimore for SC is legit….and the dawgs tackling was bush league. That was a dealy combination! Basic tackling drill has you GATA and then fit on the ball with your helmet, wrap up( around the player) and drive them into the turf. Now what is so hard about that? Our dawg D was trying to arm and even hand tackle Lattimore and that is not going to happen against any back in the SEC! Get into position to be successful dawgs…On the offensive side, the lineman need to run their tracks, drive the def. player back while staying on their blocks! Two arms/hands on the ball in the red zone is taught to 10 year olds………….bottom line, we better strap on our helmets and play solid basic football or ARK will rip our head off and shove it down our throat! Our team is so much better than what they showed Sat. Basic football will make UGA 1000% better football team. Junkyard Dawg Defense…….where are you?

Grantham picked his poision, he was content to give up a 4-5 yard run as opposed to big pass play. SC’s drives were all very long, Spurrier sure didn’t seem to be able to complete a long pass, which is surprising, given Spurrier’s supposed genius fr the passing game. He clearly lost that battle and was outcoached. But that 1 zone play, was something Grantham thought he could live with. 2nd half, Spurrier couldn’t make that zone play work, Lattimore only got 60 yards in the 2nd half. Usuallually, if you have a long drive of 10+ plays, the defense will get a to. Didn’t happen except once Sat. But, hard to fault the gameplan. Grantham could have put 8 in the box to stop the run, but decided against it.

While reading CMR’s post game comments, I noted that he said that we “didn’t miss too many tackles”. What game was he watching? Poor offense + poor play calling + poor tackling is caused by poor coaching, and results are another disappointing season, ruined aby an early season conference loss.

We have heard we have a sub par strength and conditioning problem and it showed up again yesterday. We got taken behind the woodshed and I am sick of it! What happened to Grantham’s FIRE? Rambo is not ready to play and looks out of place. The coaches need to GATA on the O line! They are not ready to run the ball. Bobo is on the clock! He was the worst of the worst yesterday! Bud

Spurrier thought the weakness of the UGA defense was inside the tackles. He didn’t want to mess with UGA’s outsaide speed on runs, or corners on passes. He thought his O-Line could whip UGAs inexperienced D-Line inside runs, and in the 1st half, he was right. In the 2nd half, Georgia D-Line adjusted, SC only scored 3 points in the 2nd half, but after the fumble on the goal-line, it was too little too late.

To anyone on here trying to give Richt the benefit of the doubt, “Open your eyes!”

This is not just the result of one bad game. This is several years in the making. Mark Richt has lost it, and it has been more evident in this early season than ever before. He FINALLY admitted after the game that we just need to let Murray play. You think? Why did it take getting man handled by South Carolina to realize that? Shouldn’t Richt have realized that maybe before the game? I for one am sick and tired of all the excuses. Richt makes all these valid points of what we should have done different AFTER we lose. When is he going to wake up and realize what he should do before we play the games?

Richt has got to go. Anyone on here that thinks otherwise, is living about 5 years in the past.

When you have 6′4 Brown and 6′5” Durham on the goal-line, and you just keep running the ball up the middle, you deserve to lose. In the 1st game, Durham proved the fade to a tall reliable receiver is almost impossible to defend. We didn’t try a single fade pass in the red zone. You can’t win the SEC just running the ball well, MSU ran the ball best in SEC last year and went 5-7. You have to have balance. We needed 200 passing (close, got 192), needed 200 rushing (got 50). King will help, andhaving a 50/50 play mix will help. And mixing up which downs you pass on will help.

At what point does not beating teams that Georgia, with the resources it has, should beat stick to Saint Mark? Mark Richt is out of his league. He never was in charge of anything. He never has had to scheme and work all night long building something. He was handed the keys to a well stocked, top 5 revenue porducting program and used another mans players to win an SEC Championship. He is good at recruiting athletes. He’s terrible at recruiting football players. His offense is old and stale and his discipline on and off the field is probably the worst in college football. Enough. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; they need to lose Searels. The O-line should be solid, year in and year out, and it’s done nothing but underachieve or at best come to life late in the season under his direction.
I also said repeatedly prior to this season that I wasn’t a fan of this 3-4 and yesterday my fears were confirmed. I’m not sold on it at all. And where are all these blitzes? There is such a thing as a run blitz too, ya know.
And where were those perfect fundamentals on defense that we saw last week? Guys were making tackles, wrapping up and gang tackling. None of that took place yesterday and the whole team seemed timid to me. Everyone lolly-gagged around the entire game and just seemed scared to death.
And I agree with Bill on the running game. The whole game, I kept wondering why they weren’t running outside more. It worked early and Ealey looked tough and fast. The inside running wasn’t working at all. I think if they would have run outside more often, it would have opened up the inside game as well.
While I am surprised and highly disappointed in this early loss, I don’t feel like the season’s over by any means. I don’t think it spells gloom and doom.
Get your act together guys. Pick it up and play with the intensity that we’ve all become accustomed to…in the past!
Mike Bobo: You aren’t an idiot and frankly I think you can be brilliant. But you gotta open up that playbook to be that.

The good Saturday was Murray. Still has a lot to learn, but no ints. Plain and simple we need a new OC. Bobo is not qualified to coach in college and it shows every game. Again, Richt should have gotten rid of him the same time he fired all the other coaches. Not impressed with Searles or the play of the OL. We need new RB and WR coach also. There is no way we should not be able to seperate from the defenders. I am about to agree with other people that we waste our talent with pathetic coaching and the excuses after every loss has gotten old. Mcgarity needs to start looking for a new group of offensive coaches or a new HC if he doesn’t right this ship by next week. Not giving up on the defense, but i think we need to be able to switch to a different defense during the game if the other isn’t working. Though Rambo would be a star, instead he has been a big disappoint two weeks in a row. Diehard fans open your eyes, Richt is not getting it done. The team is way too soft on both sides of the ball. They have no killer instinct. Other teams have new QBs and their offense performs a whole lot better than ours. Bottom line is either Bobo goes or Richt and Bobo need to go. I think you have to give SC’s DTs credit. The stuffed the middle of the line. I believe two of their starting linebackers were out. Second team linebackers may have had something to do with our effective pass blocking… few blitz packages coming our way. I heard throughout the offseason the SC dline was supposed to be stout. That is why we couldn’t run up the middle. Two linebackers out made running outside easier. Being out-coached is why we didn’t take advantage.

That’s the best defense Georgia will face this year, and we almost beat em without Washaun’s goal-line fumble. It’s gonna be a real good run for the next 6 games, don’t see Georgia facing a tougher defense, until the Florida game, and King and AJ will be back for that one, and the Georgia QB & new defense will have a lot of experience by then. I know I’m late to the party, but here’s my two cents: Lattimore doesn’t run for 182 if we aren’t getting beat up front on seemingly every down. Must the CBs and Safeties make ALL the tackles in the 3-4 scheme? I didn’t hear a DL’s name called all day! Wood, Tyson, Dobbs, et.al., looked like they were on rollerskates.

Offensively, I thought the OL did well in pass-protection, but had trouble opening holes consistently. And Ealey wasn’t breaking tackles like I’ve seen him do.

All I can say is: Go Braves!

from a 1969 UGA grad, I watched our beloved dawgs go down to a mediocre program. The lack of intensity and fire on both sides of the ball makes me want to throw up. I was a big fan of CMR but have lost all confidence in his judgement when it comes to keeping Bobo, who just might be the worst OC in college football. I live in NC and have to put up with John Fox and the Carolina Panthers and their stupid predictability on offense and Bobo could get a job with them. Long for the days of Erk and players like Jake Scott, George Patton, Bill Stanfill who played like a mad dawg. I know CMR is a nice guy but this kind of play the last four years can no longer be tolerated not mention the recruits that are looking at this sloppy type football. I implore the new AD to at least to hire all new offensive coaches and to stop us from being a predictable as the sorry Panthers.

Let’s just hope yesterday was just a bad day and not proof that our defensive problems last year were not our coordinator but due to the fact that we have recruited players that can’t be tackled or coached to tackle.

yarddawg

Its obvious that Mike Bobo has become more than predictable as an offenive coordinator. I mean, first of all any defensive coordinators epecially the good ones got to be licking their chops, you can take so called average atheletes and teach them the fundamentals like, blocking, tackling, and where to be on a given play when you see the other team line up in this formation, and beat Georgia alomost everytime. Its sad too, because I personally believe we have decent athletes on the team. These coaches these days make alot of money to do something that is a sport. Maybe we might try given Mr. Grantham the head coaching position and put CMR back at offensive coordinator. Anything at this point has to be better than what coach bobo is doing. I don’t personally hate the man, I just think that the game is way ahead of him right now. We could have won the game yesterday no doubt, and I know people get tired of could of should of all the time when we lose. But if you really look at the game, has anybody ever the South Carolina might have one of their better football teams that they have had in awhile. That Lattimore guy looks awesome, he’s gonna be something to keep an eye on for games to come. Congradulations on the win Carolina, looks like the dawgs got to go back to football 101 just to try and stay in games.

If Richt survives this season, he needs to make a concerted effort to recruit character guys, especially on defense. There’s more to football than 40 times and verticle leaps. Just see Boise State, a team that would probably beat UGA by 3 touchdowns if they played this year. Surely out there somewhere in a state of 9 million plus are a few country boys that won’t get arrested or dance on the sideline and don’t need any gimmicks or uniform changes to bring the leather to UF and Tennessee on every play. Im not sure that Mike Bobo has what it takes to be the offensive coordinator of a sec team, didnt and doesnt call the right plays, stop running up the middle when its not there.O-line has to get better, tackling has to get better, or its going to be another long and dissappointing year, and we have to much talent for that, so coaches get better at doing what you make dang good money for “WIN–BALL–GAMES. The Dawgs will be fine…We got revealed that we are not physical enough. For a 34 front to work, you have to have a dominant nose and big middle LB’s. We are developing those. I know you will hear all these “Georgia” fans talking trash, but you need to remember that most of these are GT fans. Yes, true Dawg fans are frustrated. Will it get better? Yes. Tackling was a huge issue. Rambo seems to back away from contact. Our MLB’s are just not physical players. The play calling is so predictable. We run the same 7 or 8 plays over and over again. That has to change. I believe the 34 approach will improve with better technique. Jarvis Jones will be the stud in the middle next year. It’s time to start Bean at nose. At least, he can clog the middle. Move DeAngelo to end. It’s time to introduce Dobbs to the bench. He is not a playmaker. I would move Gamble to the middle. I think a LB corp of Justin Houston (great player), Jarvis Jones (great size), Richard Samuel (loves contact), and Cornelius Washington (great athlete) will make for a better situation. The scheme is new and it will take time. In terms of the offense, we have the weapons. We just need a better scheme and play calling.

It starts at the top and unfortunately we have seen the integrity at the top. Was’t our leader allegedly arrested with some hos red panties in his lap? What type of leadership is this administration hiring? What type of players are we going after? 9 arrested in five months? Best player getting paid by an agent? wrapping up and run blocking. that’s it. we do that and we win. forget about bobo’s playcalling. the O line didn’t move anyone, and on defense we didn’t make the plays when we were in position to make them. people calling for richt and bobo’s head: not time to press the panic button. how about giving them a little credit for getting murray ready to play in a game like this? we didn’t score points because we didn’t block anyone; playcalling was conservative, but it was conservative back in teh herschel days and no one had a problem with that. why? because we moved people up front. we didn’t do that yesterday and that’s not on bobo. can’t gameplan around a line that plays that poorly.

Overall the D played well enough to win. I agree the line did not excel as we thought they should, but the play calling was atrocious. The 3rd and 2 toward the end of the half stands out in my mind. Last week Richt said they needed to find a way to get Branden Smith more involved with the offense. So what do you suppose happens this week… NO BRANDON SMITH on offense. Can anyone explain that to me? They keep telling us they need to get the ball in playmakers hands. This isn’t frigging rocket science… draw up plays for you playmakers and make it happen. I’m so f’ing frustrated with these coaches it’s just pathetic. Aaron Murray has already proved himself. The kid is way better than Joe Cox and is more mobile than Matt Stafford. LET THE KID DO HIS THING. Also memo to Bobo… we all know you like the long ball on first down, so does opposing defensive coordinators. The long ball has a low completion percentage and when you throw it long on 1st down you put tremendous pressure on the next two plays. Every time we miss Bobo goes to the run to prevent 3rd and long. If I can see this, so does the D. They load the box and we end up getting a yard or two. Say adios to that series. WE’RE TALKING TOTAL BRAIN DAMAGE!!!

A web master out there needs to get the FIRERODNEYGARNER.com web site started. We are losing too many in state prospects and we seem to have a descrimination thing going on in the defense. You can not tell me we can’t recruit a great country boy or corn fed Urlacher to play LB. Richt is too easy on the players and the coaches. He decided to give up two a days during the summer and the team suffered as seen in the poor technique and more importantly poor conditioning. Bobo ran his usual 4 play rotation of run run pass and then punt. Grantham oviously worked on tackling during the summer, what’s with the body blocks instead of wraping up the ball carrier? The D line of the new scheme looked like a sieve most of the game, by the time they made any contact the ball carrier was 5 yards into the backfield and then they went for the strip instead of the tackle. Lots of work to do looks like a long long season. Very dissapointed in the effort yesterday.

The offensive play calling, especially in the Red Zone, is terrible. We still have too many players going for the “kill shot” rahter than locking their arms on a good tackle. The offensive line does a good job of pass blocking, but is not very effective in run blocking. I don’t think they can blow any team off the line. As big as they are and with all their experience they should be better. Coaching may be a problem here. Maybe this is why Searles won’t give interviews. In addition, I don’t see the “toughness” on either side of the ball as we used to see with Dooley, Goff, or Donnan teams. What do they do in the closed practices? Is sure isn’t blocking and tackling. Maybe Richt is just too much of a finess coach or too fancy. How about some good ole smash mouth football — example Alabama. Pat Dye was right to question the team’s “manhood” back a few years ago and I think that is more of a problem now than ever. UGA needs to “man up” on the football fiend.

I feel Orson Charles is getting too much of a pass here. He dropped a touchdown he should have caught and 2 plays latter bobbled an easy catch causing us to not make a first down and have to settle for a field goal. To me, that sequence seemed to set the theme of our inability to get into the end zone. It may also explain the hesitance to involve the tight ends for the rest of the game.

“Ed” you are correct Spurrier has only won twice in his six years. I believe they won in 2007 and we were lucky in 2008 and 2009. You could tell after the first year the talent gap has gotten closer and closer. I think they finally have passed us. His players have been “coached up” not down. I am sick but I believe the Georgia Bulldog will once again be his b@tch.

Tried to tell the delusional THUGA fans last week, but they are always the re-emergence of the 76 Steelers in the coming game.

The reality is that on Saturday, South Carolina, a school which THUGA fans constant browbeat as inferior in talent, skill and players put a beatdown on THUGA which wasn’t even reflected in the score.

Aaron Murray looked good, but other than the ineligible Green, there was NOT A SINGLE position on the field where THUGA had a player which would start over the man South Carolina fielded.

SC was better at RB, WR, OL, QB, DL, LB, CB, and S. Some of the THUGA starters wouldn’t make the two deep at SC, especially at WR, DL, and CB with reservations at RB.

Nothing is more overrated that the constant Top 5 classes THUGA braggs about every single year.

Georgia fans don’t want to hear the truth, but here it is. You were beaten by a better team. The talent level on the field was even or pro-Carolina and you were out-coached, out played, and out conditioned. You never led nor threatened to take the lead. Deal with it.

I have been patient with Ritch and Bobo. I am tired of not being a top 10 team year afer year. I have no reason to spend big $ on a ticket and drive to the stadium to watch a below average, mediocre team. We will be doing really good to be 7-5 or 6-6 this year. Sure, everyone likes Ritch as person and he has had some good coaching years. But, we are obviously on the downslide, and based on Saturday’s performance, there is no hope in long term change.

I couldn’t have said it better. Bobo’s playcalling is horrendous. I remember in the first half our defense was on the field for a long drive and finally stopped SC. What was the first play that Bobo called, A long bomb with low % of getting completed. We needed a time consuming drive desperately and he calls a wasted play.

I was not impressed with anyone from the Dawgs in the first half except for Murray but I felt like Grantham and the D made some great adjustments at halftime and they completely stopped them until they were worn out in the fourth quarter.

I feel something needs to be done with Bobo. I thought Richt helping Bobo out would help but sure didn’t look that way. There is no reason we should not have scored three touchdowns. If their CB are so good throw to the TE and FB and move down the field running the ball every once in a while. The Oline needs to concentrate on run blocking.

All the fans who shouted just run, run, run the ball, including me, were sorely disappointed saturday.
The game plan was to run the ball but it didn’t work due to poor execution & poor line play.
Now is the time to go to plan B. Let Murray loose & throw the football. Obviously a passing attack would be better if A.J. was back. I still have confidence in the direction this Dawg Team is heading. We will get better.

Not see it in drills. etc. Also, what was Richt thinking when he and Bozo told Murray not to scramble. Do they ever think, just sit down and THINK, about anything. I really don’t think Richt uses good judgement any longer. He sits back and works on his sunday school lessons and Ga is a 2nd job for him. I’m disappointed in the direction of this program!! Richt reminds me of John Cooper when he was at Ohio State.

Cooper: 111-43-4 record over 13 years (.702 win pct / 8.5 wins a year)
3 conference titles.

Richt: 91-28 record over 9+ years (.764 win pct / 9.9 wins a year)
2 conference titles.

Both have good records that most teams would love to have but still can’t seem to get over the “hump”.

Tons of NFL draft picks, but no national titles.

Cooper: 2-10-1 against Michigan
Richt: 2-7 against Florida

I know it’s not guaranteed to happen likewise, but if Ohio State hadn’t dumped John Cooper because he was “pretty good”, they wouldn’t have got Jim Tressel. Anyone know how he turned out?

Last time I checked, Georgia brings in the cash. Use it to get who we need.

Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Clemson, and GA Tech have a combined SEVEN national titles since Georgia won one, with Alabama winning the two before 1980. The state of Florida has TEN. Even Auburn has gone undefeated.

Enough! For me, Richt has two years to get this train back on track or out you go like John Cooper.

I’ve heard CMR state that the football program’s mission statement doesn’t say anything about winning championships. If he wants the program to stand for greater issues, such as producing men of character and contributors to society representative of the Christian faith, that’s cool, but at least do a good job of that. He’s not winning championships and the poor conduct of his team is tiresome. He makes way too much money to keep producing these disappointing teams that play poor and have conduct issues.

I personally believe you have a monster problem. In the 4th quarter with the defense trying to get the ball back the cameras panned to the bench. Sitting there biting his nails was the prima donna quarter back biting his nails. Not invoolved in the game at all. Not supporting his defense. Not a leader for the team. He should have been up there supporting his team instead he is relaxing. Why? He should not have been tired. It actually appeared that he did not care. Can him or give him an attitude adjustment. Dear Bulldog Fans –

I would like to address the charges I’m running a recruiting program that descriminates against country boys and corn feds from the midwest. It’s not my fault we haven’t been able to recruit a white defensive back since Kirby Smart, back in 1997. I can’t be blamed for not having a single white starter on defense since David Pollack. Everyone knows football is all about 40 yard dash times and slam dunking ability. You fans have to face the fact that white boys can’t jump. I know, I know, fans out there are pointing to the Boise State defense, Clay Mathews for the Trojans and Boston College’s outstanding LB. Who’s Brian Urlacher, is he one of those Croatians on the Los Angeles Lakers?

Look in the last 5 years we’ve recruited Chase Vasser and one other country boy from Florida who’s name escapes me. We also have an Arab walk on who’s name I can’t spell. It’s important to realize that because of Title 9 we’ve got to give more scholarship to thugs and dudes with dreds. It’s the law! Do you think I like berating my homies when they keep giving up on the field and can’t figure out that driving without a license aint cool? Heck no, I’m gettin tired of telling these morons they gotta be acting right.

So in closing, I want to tell you faceless bigots to chill. You can’t argue with how many players I’ve put in the NFL. I know we haven’t won a national championship with all that talent, but don’t pull the race card on me, it just ain’t fittin. Besides I’ve got all the politically correct libtards on my side. So until Michael Adams fires me (he knows he can’t cause all sue him for discrimination) I’m going to keep recruiting boys from the hood and there ain’t nothin you can do about it.

Sincerely,
Rodney Garner

Bill, you pretty much nailed it on this one. And I hate to admit that. As a 1981 graduate, I am embarrassed by not only the lackluster performance of the Dawgs over the past few years, but especially the lack of discipline. While CMR is an outstanding man, I still believe he is a good, but not great head coach, at least not at this level.

This is the beginning of the end for Mark Richt in Athens. I don’t wish anything bad to him, he hanot demonstrated the talent to coach at this level. Folks can argue the W-L record, yada yada. Face it- he loses many of the big ones, and just can’t break through that wall. We have some high points, but this just isn’t getting it done. I don’t understand the UF fan on here saying how good they looked yesterday. It took the Gators until the 4th quarter to pull away from USF (repeat USF!). Were we watching the same game? That’s not a good sign and a definite change from the last few seasons. UF is going downhill and will get beat by SC and Bama. If UGA improves and given AJ will be on the field in Oct, then a loss to the Dawgs is also likely. Murray is a pleasant surprise and handled himself well in his 1st game against a SEC opponent. This kid will continue to improve and will be a great QB for the Dawgs. The D and O-line has to improve or else we are in for a long season. The team has to play with heart and play each game like it’s the SECCG. They owe the fans at least that much.

If CMR will let Murray play with all his strengths , Run when no one is open and if Grantham will blitz all day UGA can beat Arkansas. If they can beat Arkansas I think UGA can beat Flordia. Too many freshman and sophomores that didn’t play last year. Florida is very beatable. UGA can still win the east. SC doesn’t have much more than Lattimore . Garcia is not a very good QB. Garcia will not be the starter by the 4th game.SC is too good a team to play them in the first couple of games each year.Their lack of depth always catches up with them by the 8th game.We should schedule SC later in the year. If we get by Arkansas UGA could go into the Auburn game with only one loss.

That being said: I think the coaches already know what lost them the game. By not opening the play book and letting this kid learn was the death nail on the coffin. Sure, our D was outplayed, man-handled, and generally speaking look inept on takles; however, our offense was stymied not by schemes but our own OC.

Not having Green certainly didn’t help, but I submit the results would have been the same had he been in the game. You saw the plays, you saw what Bobo called – do you think the results would have been any different?

where to start:
tackling was pathetic
line play on both side of the ball was embarrassing
offensive play calling was predictable, uninspired, stupid, guaranteed to lose (you pick)
the only thing missing from last years offense was joe cox
problem starts with the coaching. they did not look ready to start play in the SEC. this is the world you chose to live in fellas. step up or get out.
my 2 year old granddaughter can call the game as well as ya’ll did.
i put this game squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff. you recruited the players, you train them, you prepare them. you call the plays. you motivate them. you should be embarrassed to pick up those 6 and 7 figure checks. the only place performance like this is tolerated is in washington.
if this is what i have to look forward to week in and out this year, i am done. 35 years of season tickets, no more. i have sat by quietly for 3 years saying they will get it worked out. so don’t tell me to be patient.
the least you could do is look competitive. you don’t even warrant a little discussion of the program on espn anymore. the program is no longer on the national scene.

Some of my favorites from before the SC game:

clint -

“When did Marcus Lattimore become Jim f’n Brown?”

Answer:

Yesterday. In case you missed it he ran for 182 yards.

CHDawg -

“I think the Dawgs are going to win this one by a very healthy margin.”

Answer:

I hope you did not bet the mortgage on it.

Dorsey Hill -

“The key is knowing that it’s Garcia and Jeffery that can beat you, not lattimore. In other words don’t stuff the box worriing about their frosh tb.”

Answer:

Sounds like the coaching staff bought in to what you said Dorsey.

cadawg -

“i like the look of this dawg team.”

Answer:

Really. How do they look now?

DawginLex -

“Our talent is better on both sides of the ball.”

Answer:

Really? Are they saving it for the Arkansas game?

JB -

“This blog is easy……If Georgia plays and behaves like Dawgs and Carolina plays like Carolina, Georgia wins.”

Answer:

You were right JB. UGA did play like dogs.

Boca Baby -

“the 3-4 will blow Garcia’s mind. UGA BIG!”

Answer:

It sure did. SC could not believe how easy it was to run on UGA.

SOUTHGADAWG88 -

“I’m more concerned with ARK than SC”

Answer:

You don’t have to worry about SC any more this year, but you really do need to worry about Arkansas now.

Pago Pago Dawg -

“No problem, UGA is suppose to have the best “O” line in the SEC.”

Answer:

That is the difference between wishful thinking and reality.

dawgbites -

“Thanks to the revamping of the coaching staff, and a better quality one at that. Sound minds and discipline prevail this game. UGA 30- USC 17.”

Answer:

Too bad UGA did not bring the sound bodies along as well.

Let’s wait and evaluate this team after the Arkansas and MSU games. It’s just too early to tell right now how the season will pan out. Florida is questionable, but could get the kinks worked out by the time they play us. South Carolina still didn’t impress me that much. I think Lattimore is a good back that we made look better with our poor tackling. And Stephen Garcia is just a loser just like that Jordan Jefferson kid from LSU. I’m sorry, but when you’re in your 3rd year running the offense, and you STILL can’t perform well without the help of a running game, then you just suck.

As for the Dawgs: I think Murray is a good QB. And Ealey will redeem himself. But out O-Line just has to go to work. They have the ability, they just have to put the work in because teams aren’t going to lay down for them. And I think we just lack talent on the defensive side of the ball. I have felt this way about our defense for the last 3 years or so. I think these kids are trying for Grantham, but he just doesn’t have the size and personnel to run that 3-4 yet. Grantham will have to get creative with him blitzes this year, which unfortunately means that we’ll get burned from time to time; because we just don’t have a physical presence in our Middle LB corp.

S C should have won by 21 going against a Fresh QB without the starter at WR or RB. Itwas a td close late in the 4th quarter. If Bobo calls a fade instead of another run up the middle on the goalline, Georgia wins the game.

Hey Folks-

Thought Georgia’s defense looked better overall. Few penalities, few big plays. Pretty good against the pass, and good against the run in the second half. Just didn’t click in the first half–but considering Georgia has a new defense, new coaches, and a freshman QB, thought the guys went toe to toe with SC and doggone near stole one in Comubia.

Yes, there were a lot of things to be disappointed about in the South Carolina game, but man, we’ve got way too many people posting here who are simply “freaking out”. The way I look at it is that it is a long season and one loss to a tough SEC team is not the end of the world; I agree with Rally on that point. If the problems don’t get corrected, then we can reevaluate.

Bill, It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out it was the play calling. How can you convert on 3rd down when you’re trying to run up the gut with everyone stacked in the box. I thought you were smart enough to figure it out. You’ll be eating your words about the O-line after next week because Bobo and Richt have both said they won’t be conservative any more. Get off the lines backs — you have to at least give them a chance at sussess. Also, if you have ever seen a superior physical running back (Herschel, Bo, Rogers, Tebow) they always have an advantage due to momentum out of the backfield and knowing the count — they are game changers. Lattimore will make a lot of defenses look awkward this year. I never knew you to be such a poor student of football.

Last I checked, without 2 minutes t go, on the raod, against a top 25 ranked team, Georgia was within a td score. That’s where you want to be, with a chance to win it. Just couldn’t close out the game, didn’t finish the drill.

I thought with Lattimore and thos big receivers, Spurrier would pout up 40 on Georgia. Especially with a freshman QB, and with both starters AJ & King out of the game. The defense did an excellent job, just needs to execute better on 3rd down. Did a good job on 1st/2nd down for the most part. Really impressed with Grantham so far.

Barbie Doolies, You’re showing your football ignorance. Have you never seen great running backs who started their record breaking careers their freshman year? Someone else said it before, and I think it is true — Spurrier didn’t showcase Lattimore against USM on purpose. He wanted to catch the Dawgs off guard. Why do you think he made the comment before the game — “we’re now a team on the same level with everyone in the SEC”. When you have a player like a Herschel, Bo, Rogers or Tebow — you can make statements like that. Now SC just needs to hope they can keep lattimore healthy.

I am sitting here reading all this negatism about Mark Richt and Mike Bobo. Strange how you Georgia fans love to turn on your “heroes” every time things get a little tough. First to the fan who says SC has an average team and compared it with the loss in the bowl game last year. Get a life, stupid, you ever heard of recruiting and a freshman class. Second, Mark Richt has one of the best records in both the SEC and College Football over the last 10 years and now you want to crucify him over possibly two better than average seasons. Why dont you illiterage back woods hicks grow up. This is 2010 and you can’t have a national champion every year, in fact you yahoos haven’t had one but once which seems to be all you talk about. I am sure if Richt goes, he will have a job the next day. You better damned be glad you have what you have. Of course the majority of you hicks have no life down there except for football. 2 tweaks:

Defense-
Force 2-3 TO’s a game until defense makes through learning curve

Offense:
Get a 100 yard rusher until Murray gets through learning curve

Do that, and Georgia wins the rest of the games this year.

Everyone is overlooking the elephant in the room including you Bill. Recruit players that can commit themselves to excellence and stay out jail or ncaa trouble. How many players have been arrested, lost scholarships or been suspended over the last few years. Much more than most any other school. Maybe 7-10 a year since 2005? That is a high percentage of problem children. I believe that cancer has taken the program down a notch… no discipline. Look at the lack of tackling and players taking plays off….. no leadership on the team to stop that BS. All boils down to the type of players we seem to be stuck with. Upon further consideration I’ve found some positives going into next week. They are as follows:

1. We could be Georgia Tech with a High School offense and a defensive coordinator that’s as old as the Apalachian mountains.
2. We could be Tennessee, a program that’s now on it’s third coach in two and a half years.
3. We could be Virginia Tech, who started the season as a top 10 team and is now 0-2.
4. We could be Steve Spurrier, who has no class in losing and even less class in winning. A total scum bag.
5. Aaron Murray is a promising QB. He just needs to call his own plays!
6. Grantham and Lakatos have 5 days to teach their players how to tackle. Hopefully it will sink in.
7. Richt has the rest of the season to find a new OC and let Bobo know he’s being demoted.
8. Richt has the rest of the season to find a replacement for Rodney Garner.
9. Richt has the rest of the season to convince Isiah Crowell that combined with Aaron Murray and a new offensive line he can make Marcus Lattimore look like a blob.
10. At least my Lakers won the NBA title!

1) The GA defense was in position, but the tackling was very poor.
2) The GA running game needs real work.
3) Keep in mind that 2 plays – The BS first down spot for SC on their scoring drive that Richt challenged and they effed up even the replay call would have generated a SC punt, not a score and 2, Ealey’s fumble at the goal line could have easily been a touchdown. Change those two things and final score UGA 13 SC 10. I’m not blaming those 2 plays and playing woulda coulda, just pointing out that if 2 plays can change the winner of a game that easily, the real story wasn’t a beat down by the other team.
4) Note that SC took almost 29 minutes in the 2nd half to score 3 points and only a total of 354 yards and 17 points. That kind of performance will NOT get a team to the SEC championship. Especially when they have to play through Bama, Florida, Auburn and Arkansas.
5) Lattimore is good. Georgia’s poor tackling made him look great.

Gotta love all these fans.
Just go ahead and run them all out of town-would suggest something more horrendous but could get
in trouble. Do it today not to wait. Then try to find a coach in the middle of the season. Try to bring
Attila the Hun back from the dead. Make a hella of a coach. Player or coach messes up killed on
the spot. Fans, especially these UGA fans would love it.
Live out of state so do not really care whether UGA wins or loses-just impressed with the fan reaction to one loss. Oh yeah this has been going on for years I forgot.
Think Peterson would leave BSU to come to this bed of insanity. Knowing when he lost one game he would have to be done away with.
Also, it is just a game, but I am truly farting into the wind if anyone on this site believes that.

GR8BAG8R, I wasn’t commenting on your post — I was commenting on SSIgator. Are you a pretender too? You’re probably one in the same and make my case perfectly. In reference to your remarks — I’m not one of the folks bashing Tech (or FLA or anyone else for that matter) all the time. I just try to keep them in their lane when the insults start to go over the top. I actually grew up in Sandy Springs going to Tech games. I went to UGA, so I pull for Tech during all of their games except one each year. Tech (or Florida, etc.) should be the same. You want your opponent to be as highly ranked as possible when you play them because it makes your program look stronger if you win. Case in point — UGA beat the ACC Champs last year. The point of my comments is that anyone can spot an imposter because their comments don’t make sense. For instance your comments don’t make sense because all of the Gator fans I know are on the FLA blog expressing concern over their teams performance in the first two games and are focusing on their next opponent. The timing is way off — the UGA/FLA attention and banter will start much later in the season. So, please quit pretending to be someone you aren’t and start adding something meaningful on another site that is applicable to your team. Also, since you ended up defending Tech — I disagree with your remarks. UGA and Tech have the exact same NCAA entrance requirements for athletes. Even though everyone at Tech would like you to think you have to be an engineer to play at Tech — that is not true. Tech offers numerous degrees outside of engineering, which by the way are the ones Tech players are pursuing. No criticism, just a statement of fact. Tech and UGA also recruit the same 4 and 5 star players from in-state. UGA has done better in recruiting because they have been more successful on the field. If CPJ keeps winning (like last year), Tech will get more and more of its share of those players. The state of Georgia is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the entire country. There is absolutely no reason why Tech can’t build a successful and competitive program in Atlanta. Georgia State I’m sure will prove this point one day.

To all those calling us “crybabies” after losing one game; It’s not just about one game, we are seeing a pattern here.

10-11 against SEC East since ‘06

Take Florida out, leaving UT, SC, UK, and Vandy and we’re still only 9-8 since ‘06

Only in one year since 2002 has Richt improved on the year before. Wins since 2002; 13, 11, 10, 10, 9, 11(’07), 10, 8, ?

This great program is mired in mediocrity, year after year we wait for the improvements that never come, I’m not satisfied with that, if you are what kind of Dawg fan does that make you?

Tech’s football team has the highest SAT scores of any public university in the country. Period. That means they limit the pool of athletes they target. 82Dog, I’m not defending Tech, I am pointing out that despite an incredible recruiting advantage in a state that worships high school football, Georgia has had no NCs since 1980, while fellow SEC schools rack them up. Florida competes with FSU and Miami, Alabama competes with Auburn. Who does Georgia compete with for in state recruiting????

You think you are so smart to spot an “imposter”. Perhaps you should get out more often and start thinking more strategically and ask why Georgia is not succeeding despite its big advantage….

Tech’s “high school” offense is the best they can hope for, given their sitution. However, any power running game with simply overwhelm them. Georgia proved that last year, as did Iowa and LSU the year before.

If a team plays smart, they can simply “out-talent” Tech.

Really people. Did you expect Tod Grantham was Moses and he was going to part the Red Sea? The defense is new and Grantham had the boys in the right place but they have to get Willie’s tackling out of their heads. By the way South Carolina only put up 17 points. Geez it was not like they were beat to death. As for the offense. A new qb, who by the way did well considering all things. Caleb did not play nor AJ and even with those folks out there was still an opportunity to score a touchdown. Yes there was a fumble but those things happen. Oh I forgot it was the defense that put the Dawgs in the place to possibly score that touchdown. Take a chill pill folks.

There was a handful of people that knew at least three years in advance that something was wrong with our defense and that Willie needed to go. There was also a great number of people that accused the former of being irrational or just plain stupid. You see what happened in the end but it took way too long. Looking back, in my opinion, we had an AD that had his mind on something other than UGA athletics and didn’t hold CMR accountable as to what was happening with the football program. That, my friend has now changed. Don’t think for one minute that McGarity isn’t tuned in to what’s going on. Neither is he afraid to make necessary changes. This football program gets far too much talent and these coaches get paid far too much money to be underachieving year after year. Stay tuned and lets see what happens.

After some time to sit back and think about what I saw Saturday afternoon; I have come to the conclusion that our current as well as most recent Bulldogs have no fear of losing and very little pride in playing football at Georgia. Just watch this team; we don’t hustle to the line of scrimmmage after breaking the huddle, we don’t often run on to the field on change of possesions, etc… I realize that these things may seeem small and trifle but it is all about a mindset of doing it right, doing better. As for the lack of pride well just look at all of the off field crap; nuff said. I don’t know how to fix this but CMR needs to do something. Next Saturday after UGA beats Arkansas watch Bama or Ohio State and watch how they go about their business during the game. I beleieve that you too will see what I have.

Anyone that thought the DAWGS would go 12-0 or 11-1 this year are idiots or delusional and do not know a thing about college football. We have a Freshman QB (Greene 8-4 and Stafford 8-4 freshman years), and new defensive coaching staff and had our best player suspended for 4 games. Folks this team is a 8-4 or 9-3 team only this year. I see a very good QB in the future and a great defense coming when Gratham gets a few more of his type players or some more time to coach them up to his system. The players were a little timid on defense because they are not comfortable yet in the 3-4. Our safeties are a little weak right now, the corners played great. Grantham made some very good adjustments at half time (encouraging)

Yesterday was a bitter pill to swollow for me. Not because we lost, but because I had to endure watching what I had feared would happen. Yet another round of “IMO” stupid offensive play calling. I blogged early and often that if our coaching staff would come up with an “offensive game plan” geared to our “young qb” and “stick with it” we would have a chance. Our coaching staff delivered what I feared, same old stuff. We never tried to establish a physical running game. One series of running just doesn’t get it done in the “big boy world” of physical SEC football. Game plan was the same I’ve seen over the last 4 years. Predictable and out totally out of sync. USC deserves credit for their win but when you play against the Dawgs offense you know what you’re going to face.

I’m now 100% convinced this staff offensively will never get it. We will be mired in mediocrity until Mr. McGarity has had enough. The sun is setting for the current staff in Athens, the seat does get hotter each week. There are a lot of angry and frustrated folks in Dawg Nation calling for CMR, and everyone elses head at this point. It’s no longer emotional for me, I won’t be happy to have to see a change, it’s hard, but unfortunately it has to be done. Regards all, have a good night.

What happens when UGA loses this weekend to Arkansas? I keep hearing that Richt must win 9 games or may be forced out. Then I hear he could go 7-5 again (a REAL possibility) and be fine. All I know is another loss this weekend and tickets will be plentiful. I hope SC is really good, or UGA is going to end 7-5 again. Richt now, I’m not sold on any improvement. Anyone with a decent running game is going to run for a lot of yardage on this D. That includes pitifulTennessee who probably will beat them again, mainly due to Mark Richt’s inability to have his team focused against lesser teams. By the way, Jeff Dantzler needs to take off the rose-covered glasses. Jeff, 8-4 seasons don’t excite us in case you didn’t get the memo.

All this criticism is warranted from any fan who expects to see his team perform to standard, even if in the end, they lose the game. I believe most fans can accept the DAWGs as they are. What’s completely unacceptable is the inability of the coaches to bring this team to the field ready to play, resourceful enough to adjust when necessary, and committed enough to play hardnosed, aggressive, fundamentally sound football. These coaches are paid outrageous salaries to make sure this major college program is a credit to the institution and the game. It just seems as though they aren’t motivated enough to coach these athletes to their real potential. Pretty sorry stuff.

Ga fans are delusional. Sloppy tackling made M. Lattimore look better than he really is? I saw him carrying Ga. defenders on his back like a sack of potatoes more than several times. You can’t tackle that. The truth is, Spurrier has out – recruited GA for several years running, and it showed big time on on Saturday. Face the biting reality — if you don’t turn it around, you can forget your annual talk of “National Championship”, SEC Championship, and both Ga and Tenn will fall to the middle SEC East tier SC has held forever.

I think Bobo is a good dawg. He played a great game in 1997 in a win over Spurrier/Gators. His precise passing to Hines Ward opened up the running game for Robert Edwards and company. He was fabulous in the 97 Outback Bowl.
I like Richt. He has orchestrated some great Dawg moments.
But alas; what the heck are you guys thinking these days? Admonishing a QB for demonstrating his natural talent. His natural talent comes without overthinking. Your quotes make no sense. You say you want him to conduct a simple/conservative game plan and not use his gift that many schools (including FL UT and SC) recruited him for. I realize it’s an unintentional consequence; but it turns out that you make the game plan more complicated for him by requiring him to overthinking; instead of letting him lead the offense. What’s the objective? Every player should be coached to maximize their individual talent for collective team win.

I agree with the statements about the O-line. Everybody still seems to love Searles. Yet this seems to happen every year. The line never seems to gel until five or six weeks or rotating guys. Despite Washaun’s fumble and a line that wasn’t exactly blasting holes for him, he did a good job. He ran tough and had some good runs. He repeatedly got some extras. I don’t think they gave him the ball enough. Yes, he coughed it up. That’s going to happen. Consider, though, that at half he was averaging 4.0 yards a carry, and Lattimore was averaging 4.5. Had he been given the ball more, perhaps he could have broken a couple. UGA needs to run it more than 19 times. Bobo is too quick to give up on the run, and seems to go all pass or all run. I think they can still turn Murray lose and run it 25-30 times.

I have always been quick to defend Richt and the players who have gotten in trouble. However, I would like to see one season where all of our guys are ready to play and eligible to play as a team game 1. Doesn’t that happen at other schools? Now, you are gladly welcoming guys back, but simultaneously crapping on the guys who stepped up.

Bobo is not an SEC caliber OC. He got the job by default to begin with. If CMR wants to see what the rest of the country thinks of Bobo’s abilities, put his A$$ on the market and see what the others have to offer. He might get an invitation to join Mettenberger at a JUCO!!!

Who wants to pay $100 to go watch this mess ? UGA has fallen from SEC top contender to a middle of the pack wanna-be. Fla.,LSU,Bama,Auburn rule the SEC now. A head coaching change is needed at UGA. The players play with no fire and the mistackling is unacceptable.

I can see it coming now. Richt will call a news conference saying “We are very young this year. We look to be a winner again 2 years from now.” All while Bama,Fla.,LSU just reload every year and remain competitive. Auburn has a freshman QB too but they are 2-0 and beat a SEC team.

I proudly wore my G-hat out Saturday afternoon. I am fan. Always have been. Always will be.

While I am beginning to think folks are right about the mediocrity and the need for change, I also think there is a problem with expectations. UGA started the season unranked. Best predictions from the pros were for a 9 win season (still attainable). A lot of folks were predicting a loss to SC. There is a new defense which we all asked for. There is a new QB, who I think is going to be great.

Given all of this info, some of us still thought we would go undefeated and play for the BCS. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the criticisms. See my posts above. But, I say if you want to give up on your team and sell some of those tickets at a much reduced rate, I’d gladly pick up a couple. My wife has never been to a game at Sanford Stadium.

This is another classic case of uga fans getting to excited by a loss. You have a freshman QB and a brand new defense sometimes stuff is going to go wrong don’t freak out just yet. Admittedly the defense other than houston didn’t tackle worth two burnt rusty pennies but 4 months ago it was in this paper about sorry tackling some habits are hard to break. Maybe a change is coming Florida looked like Crap against a sorry USF team for 2.5 quarters. I think that SC is pretty good but can’t pass protect(see 5 sacks)they can run but what happens if someone shuts down that run game and you can’t pass protect. This is the SEC its hard to go undefeated. Did you really think it was going to happen with a new defense and a new QB? One game and people are talking about players, coaches and firing. Get a life and become a true fan everyone knew ahead of time that there would be some headache games. You would see games where nothing seems to go right. Wake up and quit being a fan that just loves them when they winning. True fans stick with them through the good times and the bad times. Yeah who did you have before richt Jim donnan/ray GOOF? and no SEC championships, no sec east division crowns a constant 8 or 9 win team. Yeah get a life and become a true Georgia Bulldog fan!!!!

Honestly they should just revoke the scholarship for anyone that got arrested this year… and when AJ Green comes back he should sit the rest of the season and lose the extra money he’d get by showcasing his talent this year.

They can lose without those players.

Mark Richt has used up his usefulness. Anyone…..heck Chan Gailey can go 8-5 at Georgia.

Richt has been one of the best coaches in UGA history… but a decade in…what more do you need to see. He can’t get his team to play consistant enought to beat Florida and Tennessee and South Carolina in the same year…win the East…win the SEC and then have a shot at the National Championship. He’s had all the chances in the world. It hasn’t worked. They can do a lot worse than Richt…but if they want to be better…he’s not the guy anymore.

Chazzo, good comments. Playing time, also an excellent point, the lines are the foundation of the football team. I believe our Oline could be a good one if the coaches allowed them to do what physical lines do. Beat your opponents “CONSISTENTLY”. We don’t work to establish a running game, 19 carries and after the first drive most of them inappropriately timed don’t do it.

So it appears that “chazzo” is the only other person with some knowledge. It ain’t an X and O problem, its a strength problem. Since ‘05, we have been getting beat in the weight room. All these football expert journalists ignore the obvious and try to explain scheme, Bobo, Martinez, Cox, Murray, Green’s suspension, etc… When an 18 year old 210 lb. kid breaks tackles of every member of the defense, thats nothing more than strength. When out OL and DL are dominated consistently, thats strength. Van Hallanger needs to realize it’s 2010, not 1998 anymore. Technology happens, accept it

Minus about 150 of the rushing yards we gave up, this was about the kind of game I expected. Those yards, and the clock they chewed, were the decisive factor in this game. That and not having better production in the red zone.

We obviously miss our three DTs in the NFL from last year, and we need to get Anderson and Geathers ready to play nose quickly (and put Tyson at his natural position). We have to at least slow down the back as he comes thru the line. Lattimore is a fantastic back — you recruit guys like that b/c of their ability to break tackles. But we’ll see more good running backs when we face Florida, Auburn and Tech, and we’ll need to be ready.

The D did make good adjustments at half time. Looked like we were run blitzing a lot.

I saw Murray get chased down by bigger, faster defenders at times when he scrambled. I’m not sure how effective he’ll be taking off against SEC defenses. (I also didn’t like the called QB run on 3rd and 9.) The coaches are right to tame that instinct a bit. But he made some good throws and he’ll be dangerous when he settles in. He’ll also learn when he has adequate space to run downfield.

I just read where the 2 biggest defensive players never entered the game Saturday. In addition to that you hear that Richt and Bobo wanted to “protect” Aaron Murray. Nonsense and this is why UGA is now a mid level SEC team. Winning coaches don’t “protect and coddle” their quarterbacks and replace defensive players who are not doing their jobs! No guts no glory! Richt averages 10 wins a year! This argument isn’t what it used to be. With teams playing 13-14 games a year, 10 wins isn’t that elite anymore.

2009 – 18 teams in the top 25 had 10 wins or more.
2008 – 17 teams ” ”
2007 – 16 teams ” ”

Say what you want…Richt is not an elite coach. We have the talent, mentally we are just not there. That part of the game comes from coaching and preperation.

Alabama doesn’t have a problem tackling running backs. Neither does Ohio State or any of the other teams that will be in the top 5 in the nation at the end of the year.

We can expect more but we are not going to get more. He won’t win a National Championship at UGA.

I have concerns about every team we play now.
Murry is as good as advertised and he deserves better. Our punter and field goal kicker is dependable and first class too.

And recruiting way too many players who don’t understand the words “integrity” and “self-discipline.”

Southern Miss did a heck of a better job on Lattimore than we did, we couldn’t tackle the guy at all. Pathetic to say the least.

Offense wasn’t very good either. It was apparent we couldn’t run up the middle with Ealey. So as Bill pointed out, why not run Carlton Thomas or even Brandon Smith outside and see if they could turn the corner and bust a long one? My god, even Bobby Cox(the biggest idiot of all time) could have recognized that running Ealey up the middle wasn’t working.

And since we couldn’t punch it in when we got down close, why didn’t they try an end around with Logan Gray and then let him pull up and throw a pass? Geez, you have to try something different when you are getting stymied at everything else.

Terrible play calling by Bobo.

Grantham needs to teach tackling, I don’t know what the heck he’s been teaching them. At least we didn’t get any late hits on the QB or late hits out of bounds. I guess we did improve in some areas.

No excuses, and this certainly didn’t make or break the game but I found this little gem and I thought I’d share it.

By Matt Zemek

Yes, the people who review plays in the booth or officiate on the field are sincerely trying to do their best. They’re not bought off and paid for. They are making an honest attempt to provide players, coaches and fans with a legitimate competition that is fairly adjudicated.

However, just two weeks into the season, we’ve already had our fill of unconscionable embarrassments served up in both the booth and on the field.

In the booth, the SEC – which presided over the atrocious non-call against LSU in its loss to Alabama last season – jobbed Georgia in its game against South Carolina.

Replay clearly showed that South Carolina receiver Justice Cunningham was dragged down by a Georgia defender at the 33-yard line, just under a full yard short of the yellow line (which is very accurate, certainly within 2-3 inches). Yet, an absurd forward-progress spot put the ball at the 34, good enough for a first down. Georgia coach Mark Richt smartly challenged the ruling, which should have been a slam dunk. Yet, the replay-booth reviewer at Williams-Brice Stadium upheld the ruling on the field.

There are no words for that kind of self-evident incompetence. None

The biggest disappointment on defense is the lack of intensity by Rambo. He looks SOOOOOOOOOOO tentative & didn’t hit anybody all day. They need to get somebody else back there that will at least hit the receiver after he makes the catch – hey, could we not try to just intercept the ball rather than just watching it float by our head to the receiver as Rambo did?

Too bad the receivers didn’t get open? Are you kidding me? Too bad they didn’t get more chances to catch the ball, with the conservative play calling!!! It is not an accurate comparison. Lattimore only carried 14 times against Southern Miss. He carried 37 against the dawgs. Spurrier did a good job of keeping it quiet. In both games, however, he got around 5 ypc and had 2 TDs. There was a lot of arm tackling and bad angles. I’ll give you that.

Durham 100 yards, 50 T King, 25 Logan Gray, 25 Brown, 75 TE’s
2- 275 yards rushing:
Get 125 yards rushing from Ealey, 60 from King, 40 from Murray, 50 from Smith

Bobo just abandoned the run. He gave up on the O-Line and Ealey. Spurrier gave his guy 37 carries, Ealey’s a sharp back, but only got about 1/2 of those. If Ealey had 30 carries, at 5 ypc, that’s 150-200 rushing yards (Ealey usually gets an explosion run every 20-25 carries) and Georgia wins the game.

Notice SC, other than the occasional pass, lined Lattimore up and handed it to him on the move… no pitches, no pauses, no nothing… simple timing. Anyway, the UGA offense seems to be if something works don’t do it anymore, particularly if it gets you down to the redzone. It is baffling. When they mix the pass and run, they move the ball. Then all of the sudden, let’s do the Lame Dawg and get a motion penalty, or let’s throw it four straight times and punt. Worse yet let’s throw two interceptions and run on third down. that’ll fool ‘em. Let’s make them think that we don’t want to score.

I thought Murray did an excellent job and the line protected him pretty well. Run blocking was OK but UGA needs a big, strong back that makes the other side pay. Lattimore made the Dogs pay big time, but poor tackling made him much better. Believe D will play better against Arkansas, but will it be good enough? Still believe 8 and 4 year.

Who spelled DeAngelo Tyson at NT? Coach Richt said “we need to get the bigger players in there” or something to that effect, but the only “bigger player” on the 10-man depth chart for the DL is Kwame Geathers. He wasn’t on the participation list. 1 guy over 295.

Would the coaches consider shifting 6′2″ 222 lbs. Richard Samuel back to TB? The #3, Carlton Thomas is 5′7″ 180. Here are the stats in SEC games for the 3 TBs last year:

Ealey
85/366 1TD 4.31 ypc; 61 ypg; highest game AU 98 yds

King
57/235 3TD 4.12 ypc; 39.2 ypg; highest game UK 77 yds

Samuel
52/263 2TD 5.1 ypc; 43.8 ypg; highest game ARK 104 yds

My question is why did Richt and others go to Virginia Tech during the summer to look at their conditioning program. I am not smart but I believe I would have went to Alabama. I wonder what Richt is thinking.

RNB – You are correct. Saban would play with the scout team if players did not fully commit them selves. Then at the end of the season he would run them off and have 25 scholarships. He does it every year. It’s his way or the highway.

we are small and slow on defense we are a timid team like our coach. If Coach wants to preach about the bible and stuff go be a pastor on saturday it is about football. i want a football coach not someone that makes excuses we looked like a poorly coached football team on saturday. our talent is mediocre whoever is evaluating talent for georgia needs to be fired the strength coach needs to go too. we are small slow and injury prone

Its a shame that so called dawg fans are on here trashing our team, the coaches, anything associated with UGA…I don’t how many of you played any kind of ball or Div 1 football, but i know that the majority on here couldn’t go thru what these young men do conditioning wise or other in getting ready for the football season…You don’t knopw how much time the coaches put in, but i can tell you their families do..Yes they get paid alot of money and yes we should expect the team to be successful…but some of the negative absurd remarks and the defeatish attitude of some is truly amazing to me…do any of you so called experts realize that we have a young team, a new DC, several new coaches and a very, very good recruiting class coming in..But get on here and throw the whole team under the bus is unacceptable…If you don’t want to support the team, then i say get lost and go support another team that you can bash…Its disgusting to see these fare weather fans..These kids i can promise you want to win more than you do and the coaching staff is doing all it can to make the team successful..Am i disappointed in what i have seen, you bet i am, do i like the play calling from our OC, no…do i think the defense will only get better, yes..Call mne a homer if you like and call me any name you want, believe me i am big enough to handle it…I would say not a single loud mouth on here has ever coached a high school or college game in their life, much less going thru workouts and giving it all you can to make your school and fans proud…Its ok to be upset and vent your frustrations, but way too many remarks on here are out of line and very classless…

This loss sucks on so many levels…. loosing to SC makes it virtually impossible for us to win the SEC East. Unless we can go undefeated against Tennessee, Florida, and Kentucky, we are all but assured of not going to the championship game. Even if we go undefeated against the SEC East opponents, we will need SC to drop two games to these same teams.

Sorry to vent, but the best thing that we can hope for is another trip to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

Last year UGA gave up nearly 400 yards to Mallet passing. We were lucky that Cox was able to have his best game with 5 TD’s passing just like Mallet.
I looked back at Arkansas’s game with LSU to see if BLITZING on nearly every play would be successful against Mallet and it’s very obvious that’s what Grantham should do this Saturday. LSU blitzed all day last year against Arkansas and even though the score was 33-30 LSU, Mallet was was 17 for 39 for only 227 yards. and 1 touchdown through the air. BLITZING ALL DAY WORKS AGAINST MALLET. Blitz as many as it take to unnerve Mallet It will work.

What football tradition at South Carolina is how2fish talking about? Dude, what big time games have they one? How many championships? What were they…the 1969 ACC champs? I mean, is that it?
Some of you guys will go to any length to defend Mark Richt. He could lose a game to Slippery Rock and you would come on here saying “Well, they DO have a good team this year.” Wake up. Richt has the program right back to where it started when he took over. UGA is a mid tier SEC team with no hope of finishing better than second or third in their own eastern division year after year. Another thing, just because I don’t think the coach is doing a good job, and I voice my opinion, doesn’t mean I am not supporting the team, you morons. I still go to the games, I still watch them on tv, and I still wear my UGA shirts and hats.

We looked SOFT. “Hitman” and Rambo were the two most ironic names our safeties could have the way they played and Christian Robinson looked as overmatched as Bryan Evans used to.

After last year, it is almost impossible not to blame our heralded strength and conditioning program as our offensive line and our whole defense lacked strength and conditioning

Our OLB played ok and the Akeems played ok, but the DTs and DEs were getting driven back to the second level with regularity. Maybe the lack of two-a-days is because Richt and Grantham knew we’d have a bunch of DEF players after practice weeping like school children about their sore wittle muscles.

Embarrassing.
