More pluses than minuses coming out of Dawgs’ impressive first win

A quarterback who can run ... it's been a while, hasn't it? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A quarterback who can run ... it's been a while, hasn't it? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more thoughts on Saturday’s season opener …

Yes, a bunch of folks left at halftime (why go to all that trouble and expense to watch just half a game?) and the steady stream of folks leaving early really picked up midway through the third quarter. But considering it was an early kickoff against a Sun Belt Conference opponent, the crowd was surprisingly into the game. I particularly liked the classy cheers for Logan Gray’s first reception and the fans behind the bench applauding Todd Grantham’s chewing out of Bacarri Rambo and the defense after Louisiana-Lafayette’s lone score. Grantham shows the kind of passion and demand for perfection that Georgia fans found conspicuously missing in recent seasons, and we appreciate it. …

On special teams, Drew Butler was superb and other highlights included Blair Walsh notching another field goal over 50 yards and new punt returner Branden Smith giving us a tantalizing taste of things to come. But the kickoff portion of the game still needs work: The Dogs gave up a 46-yard return on the opening kick. Once Walsh and his sore leg took over from Brandon Bogotay on kickoffs, he mostly went for very high, short kicks that were well covered. On a later kick, he put it into the end zone for a touchback, but with little hang time, which is Mark Richt’s main worry about letting Walsh kick it as far as he can. …

Speaking of Smith, he looked like a definite three-way threat Saturday, which should prove to be a big plus for the Dogs this season with his terrific speed. …

Several fans noted after the game that Georgia’s running game showed flashes of what it can do — with Caleb King and Carlton Thomas both breaking tackles — but certainly wasn’t as impressive as you might have expected against the Ragin’ Cajuns, even accounting for Washaun Ealey not playing. As I noted Saturday, the lack of preseason reps for the intact starting offensive line probably had something to do with that. Likewise, with those false start flags, which prompted Richt to note that his redshirt freshman QB showed more poise than some of his senior linemen. The big question: How long this season will it take the OL to get in sync? Fingers crossed that the answer is just a week. …

Aaron Murray seemed determined not to take a sack and a couple of times showed surprising ability to escape from the clutches of would-be tacklers. But, as Richt noted, he needs to realize he doesn’t have to scramble every time his receivers are covered. Still, that scrambling ability is something opposing defenses are going to have to take into account, which should work in Georgia’s favor. We haven’t had that since D.J. Shockley.

On one of those scrambles Saturday that resulted in a completion to Orson Charles, I liked the way the tight end came back to get open and help out his quarterback. …

I also was impressed with the way Sanders Commings managed to reverse direction after his interception and get a nice return out of it, and with the linebacker play in general, led by Akeem Dent’s six tackles. …

My favorite Richt quote from Saturday was when he said that the players suspended for the first game should return for South Carolina “unless something stupid happens between now and the ballgame.” A touch of sarcasm totally justified by the coach’s obvious frustration with recent events.

Feel free to share your highs and lows from the game. And everyone have a great Labor Day holiday!

I suspect on the running game… La La probably stacked the box (I know we should still be able to blow them back) trying to make Murray do a bit more… which he did. I think on the running game, the thing that troubled me was we had a few negative running plays. I also don’t know why we didn’t toss sweep it. It worked great once and we didn’t see it again.

All in all I was pleased with our performance, especially the agressive play of the defense. This team believes in itself and it shows. They never let up. And can Grantham chew some a$$? Man he lit into Rambo like nobody’s business and i read where Rambo liked it. We’re on to something here. Can’t wait to see us with all the starters back next week!

There was a lot to be happy with on Saturday. However, our next game against USC is now even more important. All the trolls on this board were saying how our new defense was not going to be any good and Murry was another Joe Cox. After both of those were proved wrong yesterday, they changed their tune to “well, it was an inferior team… wait for South Carolina… a real SEC team… they are going to kill you…” It is going to be interesting to see what the trolls come up with if we handle USC.

I haven’t been this excited in years. I’m not ready to say we are NC caliber or even good enough to win the SEC, but I do know that this team is heads and shoulders above last year’s team.

I like the fact that the Dawgs limited the penalties and penalty yardage. And the decrease in turnovers. If that can carry through the season, this could be a special season.

The experienced line was a disappointment. They are suppose to be the strength of this team.Coach S. should have them ready next week.

“Still, that scrambling ability is something opposing defenses are going to have to take into account, which should work in Georgia’s favor. We haven’t had that since D.J. Shockley. …”

Uh, wrong. Stafford could rip off 10-yards or more pretty regularly. People tend to forget that.

Much more good than bad. Murray’s scrambles-he was surprisingly accurate on the move–threw it on the money—and didn’t take a hit–so as long as he makes good decisions–let him have some rope–1 bad throw–int drop. Rush game–backs got over 5 ypc–no prob there–ripped 20 yard & 14 yard run. 3 forced to’s from defense was stellar. 9 tackles for loss. 14 yards yielded to rushing. Gray is a weapon–and his teammates love him for staying–the guy has a knack for getting open. Brown ran some great routes and nice catches–big improvement. Durham too. TE’s wern’t used enough.

Yesterday,I noticed a BIG different in our style of tackling. As the new linebacker coach said upon arrival, did anyone ever teach the defense how too tackle. Yesterday, it was shoulder to shoulder and drive them back. As this unit jells, we are going to see some smash mouth football from them.

I’m not worried about the running game. The passing game is what needed the work yesterday, and it worked so I’m not disappointed in the running game. I was impressed with Carlton Thomas, and Caleb did alright on the carries he was given. We didn’t have our in “between the tackles” back in Washuan Ealey who gets the tough yardage for us, so I’m not worried about it. Caleb is never going to be our “grind for a first down” back, but if you give him a little bit of space and he’ll take it to the house like he did vs. Auburnand Tech. Personally I was not impressed with USC’s front 7, so I think the O-Line and running game COULD have a big day vs. them. We shall see.

F-105:
I think saying Stafford ripped off those runs “pretty regularly” is overstating it. He could and did run on occasion, but most of his success in those instances came from the fact that the defense didn’t expect him to run. They were worried about his arm. With a dual-threat QB, they have to worry about both.

Nosetackle had a great game, watching the replay last night. He didn’t get beat on a single double team. I am assuming it was Tyson, not sure.

Also, on the 3 interceptions, Houston got big pressure on the QB each time. Houston played a monster game, look for him to get 1-2 sacks per game. Thought TJ looked fast too.

The DB’s played much better, especially the corners, didn’t see them make a bad play all day. Rambo got caught on the 1, but safeties played superb, Rambo made some great tackles. Branden Smith was a star everywhere you put him–played lights out–MVP of the 1st game, bsides Murray.

I still contend that this team is the most talented team that CMR has had. Obviously a lot to do before it jells, but, if it ever does, watch out. IF 8 in the box & make Murray beat us remains the norm, getting TK & AJ back becomes even more important. The line does need to run block better & the TE needs to become a constant receiving threat. I expect that to happen but It would be good if would happen by next saturday.Special teams appear to be better this year.. USCe & the Dawgs are now officially in the hunt.because of their defenses. Well a couple of things…we know Murray can throw the ball with accuracy and has a nice touch.
Somewhat concerned that he could get intercepted with a light touch against an SEC defense.
Anyway…Murray is a player and has established himself as a leader at this point.
Spurrier with have something for us but I believe if we can take the crowd out early, we should control SC and win the game…27-17.
I have always said, if we beat Florida, everything will come together. After yesterday, it looks like we are certainly capable of beating Florida…since Florida appears to be able to beat itself.
UF is getting beat-up in the local media here in Jax…right now, if coach can keep our players out of jail, we are looking good.

If nobody else noticed…. the reason the running game was “slow” (we averaged 5 yards per carry) was because ULL was loading the box. Throughout the first half, both of their safeties were in the box. Furthermore, we were straight vanilla on offense the whole day. All but about 5 of our runs were straight up the gut.

They were making us throw it, and Murray made ‘em pay. If USC tries to do this next week, AJ Green will have a field day in their secondary, assuming he plays. If not Durham and T. King will pick up the slack.

Alot to be happy about. Murray’s play was as good or better than we could have expected. We are in good hands this year. Pass protection was excellent, run blocking from the o-line needs work. We are as talented at the skill posistions as anyone in the country. Our defense already looked 50% better than last year. Next week playing the “Chickens” will prove to be a showdown like every other year. SC has the priveledge of playing us early while the kinks are getting worked out. The soft bend and dont break days of “Willie” are over boys! SC is used to the old style, If Garcia runs out of the pocket like he did against Southern Miss, he will be knocked out of the game by the second quarter. I give credit to SC, they look like they are putting together the right peices to compete(Lattimore), but Granthams D is getting ready to take them to the woodshed! once again we have o-line issues. who’s fault is that?

penalties….notice how the defensive penalties were down, but the offense still continued to make them. hmm…..maybe our problems aren’t completely solved yet.

some say we had problems running the ball because ooh la la was stacking the box. honestly, i think it’s because Caleb King runs like Lars Tate….great in the open field but in traffic he falls down just after crossing the line of scrimmage. Carlton Thomas is too small a back to go up the gut….but, coach bobo will send him there because he likes to outthink the opposing defense rather than doing what works.

76 Dawg, I can agree with you. I didn’t go to UGA, but ever since I went to my first game I have become addicted to going. I have friends that claim to be a bigger fan than me but then they turn arround and say that they would just rather sit at home and watch on tv. I love being a part of the atmosphere. I try to make it to at least one or two games a year and I never leave early. I’ve always figured that the fans that leave early were either season ticket holders and just dont care enough when playing the creampuffs or the drinking fans wanting to get back to their booze. Maybe as I get older and atend more games I too will leave early, but I cant imagine that right now. I will be at the Arkansas and Idaho St. games and I plan to stay to the very end. Even as badly as I think we will beat up Id. St.

John,

Who said anything about a national title?

We’re excited because the defensive play and QB are light years ahead of last year’s play. It doesn’t matter that the competition was easy.

I’ve read maybe one or two posts predicting an easy win against SC next week. Not one post has predicted anything more than that.

Comprehend much?

Game analysis

September 5th, 2010
2:28 pm

Good news is that the dawgs played a team that is really, really bad. On top of being overmatched these guys were finding ways to lose. The bad news is that we all noticed that we weren’t really effective running the ball.

Out of all the blowouts I watched yesterday of SEC teams mauling lesser opponents the Georgia game was the only one where the O-line didn’t dominate the opposing defense. Oops make that Florida too which got stoned by Miami, OH defensive line. for 3 qtrs.

South Carolina’s front 7 is going to be much more formidable and we have to be able to run the ball against them. The Southern Miss team they beat up is a lot more talented then the 6th graders we were playing yesterday.

Judging by Florida even though its early the gators looked really, really bad. They looked like a team we could beat. bammer- well, that’s a whole different beast. They were playing a lesser team too but they just looked physically punishing all the way around. I would say the team that we fielded yesterday could play with anybody in the conference except bama.

Overall defnitely pleased with what I saw and I do think it will only get better. Disappointed in the OL as I really thought it would be the #1 strength of this team, and may very well end up that way, but I remember the last few of years, it took way too long for them to start playing well, and by then it was too late. I still say the only coach I thought Richt should have fired but didn’t was Searels. The O-Line has done nothing but underachieve and false start since his arrival. And still the KO teams are off to a slow start.

Other than that, I’m very excited about this season. The defense looks solid, as does both strings at QB. Our WR corps, including TE’s is going to be phenomenol. Can’t wait for Ealey to get back, as I think King feeds off of his presence.

Kicking game is unreal. I felt like Walsh should have won the Groza last yer. I’d love to see a Groza winner and a Guy winner on the same team. I know they’re both capable.

I hated seeing AJ out, and I hope that crap comes to a head this week.

The best coach I ever had let you know that you had screwed up by getting in your face and used every curse word in the book in just one broken sentence. That accomplished two things . First, it got your attention and second you found out real fast what not to do ever again.THAT’S OLD SCHOOL COACHING. When you are trying to get something over to an 18 to 23 year old sometimes it takes that. For those of you that got offended at Grantham’s rant it’s obvious you don’t have athletic sons or haven’t coached young men but trying to say this in a nice way ,JUST LET IT GO. We have been needing a passionate , give a damn coach , for our defense for a long time. It reminded me of ERK.

Gator Bait thanks for showing the class of SEC FOOTBALL FAN. I was in Daytona with best friend which is a fla fan. We watch the dawgs and turned to fla game a few times. Three yrs ago went to fla game which fans were just so sick with the rudeness, never seen it that bad towards UGA. Most young punks, I ve been going since 70’s to games. Was used to owning fla, in my day. Still never disrespect the other team. I thought the dawgs looked good . Could be a team that could put it all togeather this yr and win the east. One game at a time. SC has allways played us tough. Very impressed with D fence and OFF with 3 key players missing. Hope all are back this week. We all can judge from this week. One more thing can WE ALL JUST GET ALONE. I have had some of my best days in Jacsonville party with fla fans and ga fans at Billys before and after game. We could all get along and we were losing with the better team then too. But last few yrs fla teams have just been better. Just like now Bama looks goods. But win or lose I’m still a UGA fan no matter where we fall. Also and anyone that thinks we should get rid of CMR is a fool where were you when we could get a SEC champs for 20 yrs he has two in 10 yrs. He has made the right move I think now with D. We will see if he needs it on OFF this yr if we can hold on to ball long enough to do something with it then other giving to other team. I think these young man are about to prove something next cple yrs. Just can’t wait to see Lamay and Marshall and company getting to the dawgs. Great things to come. 76-Dawg, regarding the pregame rituals, I know the experience well. I also know the feeling of actually getting to the stadium and anticipating a rivalry game where the outcome is very much in doubt, which was often the case against Clemson. If you enjoy the overall experience and don’t care who Georgia actually plays that’s your business, but to me the game is still the main attraction and primarily what I spend money on.

Great job by the defense. Bobo and Searles need to get it going fast. Run blocking was pathetic and of course the playcalling sucked. Murray will have to improvise with the shabby offense that Bobo calls. They better improve quick because, SC looked really good in their game. The defense did a great job, but the true test will come against SC. TJ Stripling really showed a lot of speed coming off the corner. Would like to see more of him next week on more blitzes and maybe used as a rover. Lattimore is a big back for SC. We’re going to have to really do some big hitting from here on out.

Yeah. Way to bang it in in the red zone. Richt and Bobo will never learn. Tennesse’s offensive line is already more physical than yours. Also, even the Kool-aid drinkers have to be utterly dumbfounded as to why Richt and Bobo didn’t go after Cam Newton. They effectively handed Auburn a physical freak of nature. It ranks up there with the two georgia boys who make up the entire left side of the No. 1 team in the nation’s offensive line. James Carpenter and Chance Warmack. I see we are still playing Walk-Ons on Kick-Off Coverage who miss their tackles and do not contain their lanes, which is surprising by itself, given that with all the players KICKED-OFF and who just QUIT this gig that we have FIVE (5) Walk-Ons who are on SCHOLARSHIP.

Sunbelt Conference Louisiana Lafayette shut down STARTING TAILBACK for the 6th Game in a Row, Caleb King. Who would have guessed it ? Wahh, I don’t feel good. Coach take me out. Except for the lone run where Louisiana Lafayette defender had him tackled for a loss but let him go, Caleb King was a BUST.

Do ANY of you really believe that Aaron Murray can pick up our Running Game, covering for the lack of ability to block for the run and lack of a Running Back outside of Arrested / Suspended Washaun Ealey ? God Almighty, who was it that designed those running plays ? And, where was Dontavius Jackson, who also would have been far better than Caleb King ? Oh, that’s right quick off of being DUPED by Tavarres King to drive Tavarres’ Pick-Up Truck around Athens for the sole purpose of Tavarres getting DRUNK in it with 6 of his buddies all with alcohol purchased by Branden Smith who had his Driver’s License suspended for THAT because he had Vance Cuff’s DL on his person, Dontavius Jackson also QUIT this gig.

Was studying the recruits in the STATE OF GEORGIA on Offense again, and notice just how great we are doing in-state on Offense.

Again.

NOT.

How can Coach Richt be FRUSTRATED, Bill King ?

He just TOOK THE JOB AWAY FROM MIKE BOBO, as was OBVIOUS to EVERYONE, as Offensive Coordinator. Why have Mike Bobo, if you are going to do HIS JOB and your own too ? Anyway, I thought it was the fault of the Police that we won the Fulmer’s Cup NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. None of those guys should have been arrested. It is all they could say all day long, this guy and this other guy etc out of the game.

Dual-Threat, yeah right Bill King. He can either run around back there and get hammered by SEC Defenders, throw off-balance and should have had 2 of those intercepted but were not, or get hammered with our season shot as a direct result downfield. Bill King, did you even watch Coach Richt ? What do you think Steve Spurrier’s game plan will be ? Run Blitz, force him to do that and you liked it.

Coached up on offense ?

I guess you missed the half a dozen penalties ?

Missed that despite the defense handing them the ball, they could not even run on a Sun Belt opponent, and not even a good one at that.

Who is our receiver ? We bounced the ball in front of wide open Orson Charles. We threw 2 balls which should have been intercepted. Our Offensive Coordinator / Head Coach was running around like a chicken with his head cut-off every play with Aaron Murray making plays when NO ONE ELSE would.

Against the Sun Belt bottom-dweller.

I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned the KO team. Mostly that Bill didnt touch on it. If you look at each one, the 2 that were not good: one was flat and then poorly tackled and one that seemed to just be be a mis-kick that was just short. The last bunch of them that were high and landed inside the 5 were covered pretty well. I think thats what Coach was trying to say last week about some fans not understanding. He wasn’t calling anyone dumb (although some folks in here insisted they were guilty), just that its a combination of factors.

sc plays over their head against Georgia every year due to the fact that half their players come from the state of Georgia, that’s also why they tank every year after losing to Georgia.

Caleb King looked slow….too slow for this opponent. He continues to lack any resemblance of a burst. I’d bump him to 3 on the depth chart after this game. He gives up and gets tackled way too easily, not withstanding the TD, which was nice.

I think Murray showed some great qualities in the way he directed things and looked off the D. He seems to possess some of the intangibles of a great QB. I fully expect, however, that he will have two or three turnovers against SC. I hope not, but I won’t be surprised or write him off if it happens.

We haven’t seen a QB since Greene who could consistently march a team down field for long, extended drives. I would love to see that again. Man, Greene used to eat up time and yards and exhaust opposing Ds.

Altamaha:

Take another look. I did write about the kickoffs:

But the kickoff portion of the game still needs work: The Dogs gave up a 46-yard return on the opening kick. Once Walsh and his sore leg took over from Brandon Bogotay on kickoffs, he mostly went for very high, short kicks that were well covered. On a later kick, he put it into the end zone for a touchback, but with little hang time, which is Mark Richt’s main worry about letting Walsh kick it as far as he can. …

To all the dawgs haters…… next week Louisiana Lafayette will play the team(Arkansas State) that scored 26 points against Auburn. Louisiana Lafayetta beat Arkansas State 21-18 last season. If it weren’t for Rambo missed assignment the dawgs would have gotten that shut out. Stay Toon Haters.

My Bad Bill. And I agree with all that, except that I don’t know that we can really say kicking it inside the 3 Yd line is exactly short. Short of the endzone, but the term “short”, conjures up visions of 2008.

And the bigger point about somebody moaning about the penalties is that they ignore the 30 yrds. I would say that cutting that number in half was a pretty good start. Although certainly the false starts on the line is frustating.

We may go 9-3 with Murray but it will be great by the end of the year to listen to the excuses coming out of Gainesville about Brantley.

Talk about a square peg in a round hole. And no TT to bail him out like in 2006.

Just like I said. Murray will be a better QB than Brantley and Meyer will be wishing more than ever that he had him.

I don’t know the stats, but we seemed to play nearly penalty-free, which is a massive improvement, and we got 3 takeaways to nearly match last season’s total haul.

Overall, we looked great in all the ways we looked terrible last year. Grantham is starting to remind me of BVG with his fiery demeanor and aggressive scheming. Could be a great year, will be a fun year.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.

Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.

Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the AD is a drunk debaucherer.

There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.
