Maybe Mark Richt needs to add a driver’s ed teacher to his staff

Another Bulldog traffic arrest.

Another Bulldog traffic arrest.

Well, we’re making progress. Of sorts.

At least Washaun Ealey, arrested early today on misdemeanor charges of driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene after hitting a parked truck in a campus deck, had a real license, albeit suspended. He wasn’t driving on a learner’s permit like some of his arrested teammates. And he wasn’t riding a scooter out of an alley.

Sorry, I know I should take any arrest by a UGA football player more seriously. But, really, the continuing ridiculous saga of the Bulldogs’ traffic court problems has become something of a joke. A not very funny joke.

The stupidest thing Ealey did was leave the scene after parking service attendants confronted him about the collision and told him to wait for police to arrive. It’s hard to figure how he thought he’d skate on that. Had he not noticed that UGA football players are not immune to arrest?

No alchohol was involved, thank goodness, so I’m not sure whether a couple of traffic misdemeanors rises to the level of missing any playing time or not in Mark Richt’s rule book. In this case, though, it probably ought to. Caleb King already was likely to be the starter in the opening game, so perhaps Ealey spending at least a half on the bench — or maybe the whole game — might help him to understand that as a Georgia Bulldog he’s in the spotlight. And he needs to act accordingly.

SIDELINING LORAN

Loran Smith deserves to be part of the broadcast. (Georgiadogs.com)

Loran Smith deserves to be part of the broadcast. (Georgiadogs.com)

The news that Bulldogs radio network fixture Loran Smith is being replaced by Chuck Dowdle as sideline reporter during the football broadcasts shouldn’t really have surprised anyone. When the broadcast team was revamped last year in the wake of Larry Munson’s retirement a lot of folks thought ISP might take the opportunity to shift Loran out of the role in which he’d become more of a punch line than an asset and limit him to the pregame show. A year later, they’ve finally done that.

Make no mistake, Loran deserves to be part of the broadcast. As I wrote last year, no one questions that he is probably the most loyal citizen of the Bulldog Nation. He seems to know just about everyone and is topped probably only by the legendary Dan Magill in his knowledge of UGA athletics history. And his Bulldog bona fides are stellar. I mean, a couple of the Uga mascots have even been named after him!

But when Munson would throw it down to Smith with a “Whaddyagot, Loran?” you never knew what to expect except that only occasionally would it have any relevance to what was happening on the field. One of the most beloved stories among Georgia fans concerns the mid-game sideline report from Smith that then-Georgia defensive end Charles Grant likes boiled peanuts — a revelation that was met with silence from Munson, followed by, “Third and six.”

Bit by bit, Dowdle, now retired as WSB sports director, has been assuming Loran’s former jobs … first co-hosting the weekly coach’s TV show and then last year doing the postgame locker room interviews. Now the sideline reporting.

But with four hours of pregame show to fill before the kickoff, there still should be plenty of time for Loran’s rambling interviews with past players and sports celebs and his reminiscences about his many years of involvement with UGA. Listening to Loran is an integral part of tailgating in Athens. And most Dogs fans wouldn’t want it any other way.

It is sad that these kids (8 of them) have been arrested so far for various offenses before the season has started. Apparently more needs to be taught that driver’s ed, maybe so lifestyle thinking classes and one on what happens if you don’t think before you act as well….just playing football doesn’t give you a free pass to do what you want to without paying the price..

I know this is not CMR’s fault. You can only do so much. But when does the stupid stop! Do you not see players around you getting into trouble for the same things??? You never leave the scene of an accident, which he did because of his suspended license. Why didn’t he take care of his license before now?

And don’t give me this “everybody makes mistakes crap.” How many players in front of you have already made the same mistake? Why are you not paying attention and acting like a responsible young adult?

NO! The stupidest thing was driving the car without a valid driving license.

I think it is CMR’s fault. There should be a grad assistant whose only job is to be certain all players have valid driver’s license and advise them and the coaches of who does not! Furthermore sais assistants should baby sit all plyers who are jeapordizing the team and season. Yes, this typical boneheaded move puts these players future as well as the future of the program at great risk.

My comment is that Chuck Dowdle seems to know less about sports and football in general than anyone else. He is just surface coating. We need a really insightful sidekick like an ex-player or ex-coach. For example, “the reason X is missing so many tackles might be that he is playing the position a little wider than it is designed for. Just a few inches can make a difference, in both angle of attack and susceptiblity to blocking.”

Sick and tired of this crap!!!!

The rate at which these players end up on
police blotters is embarassing to them, the school, the alumni, etc. Though, maybe
not the coaches. I’m sure it is a pain in the butt for them to deal with, however,
they are the ones who can impact this behavior.

Lots of college students get in trouble, granted. This long ago passed the
point of stupidity. How many times does a teammates have to be arrested for a
driving violation before these fools get it? What time did it occur? The booking
was at 5 AM.

UGA players to do list:

1. Quit being stupid
2. Do not drive without a valid license
3. Do not drive without insurance
4. Quit being stupid
5. Be in your room by 12:00 (I dont care about the rest of the student body, you are different)
6. If there is a fight…run. Prove your manhood on the field.
7. Dont even think about touching a girl that is not your girlfriend.
8. Do not destroy public property.
9. Avoid scooters. (Walk, cab or bus)
10. PLEASE STOP BEING STUPID

Also, this behavior will not cease with harsher punishment, just look at society and the ramifications of armed robbery and/or other serious offenses. You’d think that the punishments would be a deterrent, but these idiots can’t think 15 minutes into the future. “Ooh, LaJeffrey, lets steal that car and be rollin’ downtown”. Forget the fact that you’ll be incarcerated in 30 minutes.

Ealey may be back…Ealey may NOT be back. Driving @ 3am on a suspended license, then hitting a parked car and being told by witnesses to not leave because THE POLICE ARE ON THEIR WAY, then driving off anyway is a SERIES of serious lapses in judgment – of course that seems to be the “in” thing at the UGAG Athletic Dept these days.

Richt should kick him off the team (after he bails him out of jail). That’s the ONLY WAY you send a message that this kind of s#i! isn’t going to be tolerated at UGAG anymore. The fact that Ealey would even do something like cruise around at 3am on a suspended license specifically means he thought he could get away with it. There is NO FEAR of consequences for actions off the field in that program…There really needs to be.

Why is UGAG constantly trying to defend its crown of most football players arrested per year against the likes of the U of FLA Gators or the Tenn Vols? Quite frankly, it’s an embarrassment for THIS STATE that one of its 2 flagship public colleges is constantly in the news for all of the wrong reasons. The AJC knows it too and won’t even permit comments on a blog about the arrest!

Will Richt kick him off the team? No, and EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS IT…And that’s WHY this won’t be the last time this kind of thing rears its ugly head at UGAG. ESPN was plastering this story all over the airwaves this morning. How pathetic that this kind of thing is tolerated and “punished” with 1/2 game suspensions. Your program is only as strong as the one at the top making all of the decisions. And yet another FAILURE by him to take these illegal activities seriously says all that needs to be said. More will follow…

@muriel, I’m very embarrassed when our players get in trouble, but it’s worthy to note that CMR isn’t the only school recruiting the kids who get into trouble. Some of these kids have offers from 40 schools when they commit. He and other coaches have no idea what will happen with a kid despite their best efforts to keep them out of trouble. Richt has pulled offers from several kids i.e Dexter Moody, at the first sign of character issues before they even get to Athens. Players arrested for serious issues have been thrown off the team and UGA actually has players miss games when they get in trouble. I’m just saying, CMR is not soft on discipline. He’s doing what he can, our players have to make the right choices.

Someone at the University of Georgia needs to take a stand and establish some very basic operating standards of conduct and discipline for the Football Team. I think these kinds of missteps are a reflection of not establishing a clear code of conduct upfront with the players. Ealey was charged with speeding and tag violations on May 30, she said, and failed to appear for a scheduled court date on July 12. That failure to appear triggered a suspension of Ealey’s driver’s license, Bolton said.

Ealey’s fines in the case would have been $205 for speeding and $125 for the registration violation, Bolton said. Those fines, plus $150 in fees, are incorporated into the $480 bond he had to post to be released from jail today on the bench warrant, she said.”

Well if I am getting this right. All of you UGA Haters won’t be satisfied till CMR nails Washaun Ealey to a cross in front of Sanford Stadium proclaiming him the foul destructiveness that is the problem with the UGA program. For those of you who are over the age of 15 posting on this blog take a look at your own youthful driving records and tell me your are the perfect driver. Whether or not you got caught I bet there is something there that you did that was due to inexperienced youthful stupidity. Myself included. NO alcohol was involved. NO injuries to anyone. Leaving was dumb but I am sure he left due to panic. Not excusing it just explaining it. Two things. He knew he was driving on a suspended license and he also should have known leaving an accident is against the law. Both of these are misdemeanors. Washaun will have to pay restitution to the truck owner, appear in court, pay a hefty fine, give up his licenses for another year, and attend some sort of driving school. You know just like all of use regular people would have to do. I believe CMR will take all that into account and by the guidelines set up within the athletic department will probably get a game suspension. Sorry if all you SC, UT, GT, UF fans didn’t get your year suspension with a 6 month jail term out of this but there is NO story here except what you want to make up and spit out over these blogs. 1. I\n Georgia you cant be “arrested” for driving on a suspended license unless you have been served. So Unless he was served (via a cert letter or having been stopped (and let go as the law requires) once before then he was not “arrested” only served. If he was not served his charges of driving without a licence will be dismissed.
.
2. Failure to appear disappears once the fine is paid for the past speeding ticket.
.
3. that leaves only the “hit and run of a parked vehicle” which is no more serious than bumping a fence and not reporting it.
.
So in conclusion his only offense that has merit is “striking an object without reporting it” a 5oo.00 fine.
.
HARDLY MURDER.

You still don’t get it do you? He was told the police have been called and are on their way – “Don’t leave”. He drove off, which in some states could be considered “fleeing” or “attempting to elude a police officer”. Yeah, just bumping a fence. Keep telling yourself that, kid.

He was given a date and time to appear in court. He failed to show.

He was told not to drive when his license was suspended. He drove.

He was told not to leave the scene after witnesses saw him hit a parked vehicle and reported it. He left.

It concerns me that you don’t see a negative trend in behavior with this individual. If he was 3rd string right guard would you feel differently? If he was a Florida Gator would you feel differently?

If you doubt my knowledge of the law….google it. Georgia is quite clear………without notice you CANT be arrested for driving on suspended license He failed to appear 13 days ago….no way the state could have had time to process his suspension and mail a cert letter). He was arrested for “striking an object without reporting it”. The 480 fine he paid ERASED the failure to appear on a speeding ticket. So UNLESS he was served prior to the incident then the charge of “driving on a suspended licence” (and the time frame makes that prohibitive” will be dismissed. His only charge that has merit is “striking an object without reporting it”.

Well said about Loran.

Seriously, a football staffer needs to regularly review every player’s driver’s license and vehicle registration and make sure everything’s in order. And the department should probably arrange for some driver’s ed as well.

On the other hand, is an arrest really necessary when it comes to traffic violations? It seems like they bend over backwards to NOT show any leniency to football players, b/c they rightly don’t want to show favoritism, but the result seems to be that players get booked for things that many ordinary citizens would not get booked for.

Save the arrests for people who are actually dangerous.

A bench warrant is a variant of an arrest warrant that authorizes the immediate on-sight arrest of the individual subject to the bench warrant. Typically, judges issue bench warrants for persons deemed to be in contempt of court—possibly as a result of that person’s failure to appear at the appointed time and date for a mandated court appearance. it costs more to arrest, process, and house an inmate than a speeding ticket is worth. More likely than not, delbeert the dumbasz, the court merely notifies the DMV. The DMV sends out (as required by law) a cert letter giving you time to either pay the fine or have your license suspended. Once you sign the receipt at the post office you have been served and THEN and only THEN can you be arrested for driving on a suspended licence. If you notice he was NOT arrested on a bench warrant (HE WAS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED DRIVERS LISCENSE AND HIT AND RUN) but it was ADDED (the bench warrant) AT THE POLICE STATION.

This shouldn’t even be a one game suspension. After reading some of the details I had almost the same thing happen to me involving a suspended license.

Got a speeding ticket and I was going to go to court. I screwed up and forgot about the court date. A few months later I was in Athens and got pulled over and I immediately remembered I had forgotten the court date. You just don’t realize how nervous you can be at that moment. Next thing I know I am tasting the hood of my car and then being treated like a major criminal. Technically they are just supposed to take your license away from you but I got a trip to jail anyway. The judge threw out the driving on a suspended license and I had to pay the speeding fines and no one suspened me from my job for being stupid.

He’ll pay for the damages, pay the fines, and that will be a lesson he won’t forget. This would be alot different if the parking attendant was a cop or if the accident had been on an actual road or if alcholol had been involved.

This is being blown way out of proportion and I hope that all of the people bashing this kid get treated the same when they screw up.

Again I din’t condone leaving and you act like you were there and heard what the parking attendants told him. Maybe they are trying to cover for themselves now. Still not eluding police that is much more serious and involves actually having police in sight trying to stop you not just supposedly someo witness said they told him to stop. I never said kids should be held responsible just don’t blow it up bigger than it is and say “eluding police” why do you want ot make it bigger than it is? Did some big football player hurt your feelings? Maybe when you get your training wheels off you will get a license yourself. Last time yes the kid should be held responsible and yes if the police grabbed his arm or got behind him with their lights on and he kept running “eluding police” then kick him off the team. For now he bumped a car and some parking attendant says they told him to wait not eluding police suspension is fine.

It’s called inexperience. I thought it was done and over with and never received any info to the contrary, until I got pulled over for doing 6 mph over on a side road one day. The Cop was very cool and said hey, just letting you know, need to slow it down, then ran my license, then told me my license was suspended.

Tired. Yes if he was there when the police were there and they told him to syop and he took off then they would chase him and it would be eluding. The fact is bumping any object you only have to notify. I don’t know exactly what was said to him and yes I’m sure he didn’t want to wait for the police and I said he should have called the police himself but you do belive eberything you read in the paper and every witness tells the entire truth right? Hoew do you know they didn’t say hey Washaun you better get out of here. You don’t. I was the one that said he should have called the police himself but wake up. Being told by some parking attendant that we called police because you bumped a car (in GA same as bumping a fence etc.) no lives at risk no moving car just a staionary object is not the same as eluding police. To hear you talk once he left after being warned by some witness they should have got copters in the air and called the SWAT team. I’m willing to bet they didn’t even turn their lights on driving to the apartment. Again I’m just saying look it up if it was considered eluding police they would have charged him with that. Get the giant chip off your shoulder and blowing it up bigger than it is. I agree should have called police I said that but saying he eluded police which is a felony because some parking lot attendant may have told him to stay or may not have is stupid.

Maybe you consider that a “strange reason or vague rule”, but ignorance of the law is no defense….Even when you’re 25 years old and should be able to read and comprehend a traffic citation.

One side of the story? He was speeding and had registration violations. He failed to show up and offer a defense. His failure to show up is documented. His license was suspended. He was driving on it at 3am. He hit another vehicle and it was witnessed by others. He left the scene after being advised the police were coming. “He admitted to driving the vehicle, admitted to being involved in an accident,” One side of the story?

What side are you waiting for? Maybe, “I was driving a pregnant coed to the emergency room after rushing into a burning building and rescuing a burning baby”? Would that make you feel better?

I’m not saying ignorance is an excuse, but we’re still talking about a something minor enough that it gets dismissed by simply paying the fine.

By “the other side of the story” I’m talking about why he left the scene. Maybe he was more focussed on getting to conditioning on time. Don’t they condition every day at 6am?

I’m not trying to defend his actions, only saying that I understand how a mistake could be made.

AND, that this is being blown way out of proportion. We’re not talking about an alcohol related event, or an assault, or anything of a serious nature.

WE ARE talking about a kid ( and i don’t care what anyone says, the vast majority of people at the age of 21 still act/think like adolescents) who made a minor mistake.

In my case, I simply didn’t read all the fine print on the ticket. I looked at it, saw the amount of the fine and the address to mail my payment to and thought it was taken care of. Obviously Ealey didn’t even get that far.

Given the rash of stupid traffic violations I do think these guys need some education as to how to handle these situations like adults, or better yet how to avoid them altogether.

3. Officers also determined that Ealey’s license was suspended, leading to a second charge.

Enough, Richt needs to go. It’s obvious that he either recruits low-character types or runs such a lax program that he can’t keep it under control. Or both. Even if you accept RICHT’S explanation of what happened during the infamous endzone celebration in ‘07 at the WLOCP, then that proves he doesn’t have control over the team (Richt’s story is that he only meant for the offense to excessively celebrate). Certainly, he doesn’t inspire fear from the players who took it among themselves to rush the field after the offense scored without being REAL sure what the coach wants. Fact is, they didn’t care and knew they would get by with it, and they did. And this begs the question – why does a Georgia coach need gimmicks like that to motivate his players for the freakin’ Florida game in the first place?

It’s becoming obvious that his early success was built upon the foundation of a great coaching staff (Brian Van Gorder at the forefront) a dominant, once-in-a-generation player in David Pollack, and a solid, heady quarterback like David Green (recruited by Richt’s predecessor). There hasn’t been evidence of real discipline within the program for years, and nothing that’s happened this year indicates that anything has changed even with the staff shake-up.

Richt was just what Georgia needed when he was hired in ‘01, but he’s run out his string. Time to go.

Here we go again with some really dim bulbs in the UGA nation excusing this fool for his criminal behavior. Ealey’s transgressions are serious especially if it was your truck that was hit. I just had about $2000 of damage done on my car by a similar “hit and run” jerk. That crime was tantamount to picking my pocket for $2000 and I didn’t like it. Ealey doesn’t need a death sentence, but at the same time his behavior was very wrong and he needs to work on some character issues.

Georgia’s issues seem to be mostly traffic issues this year while other unnamed school are not dismissing players for more serious violations. It looks to me like Richt is handling this the proper way with punishments appropriate to transgressions. D. Jackson was booted from the team for a real hit and run involving alcholol.

All I am saying is that this particular offense does not warrent any more punishment that what the judge will dish out.

Dawg Tell,
Sorry, you sounded like a plant from your post. Now, if you really were in Athens in the early ’70’s, then you know this kind of stuff goes on constantly among the 18-22 yr. old crowd there…along with bounced checks, underage drinking, and you know the rest. It is perfectly normal behavior. Richt does a great job of molding the kid’s character. Developing integrity is a very tough job, and I think the kids are worse now than in the ’70s. Some show up at school without much upbringing, and they have a lot of learning to do. Also, if you really know what is going on inside the program you know the staff has been admonishing the young men for quite some time now. They have to stay the course, obviously, but this is an integrity issue for Washaun and needs to be corrected. The rest of it doesn’t appear to be that bad from what I have read. I suspect we won’t see him on the field till SC.

He should be kicked off the team immediately! He was charged with speeding and tag/registration violations back on May 30th. At that time, CMR had to sit down with him and say, “That’s your mulligan, kid. Don’t screw up again.” So on July 12th he failed to show up at his court date, which triggered a suspension of his license. At that time, CMR had to sit down with him and say, “What are you doing Washaun? You’re seriously in danger of losing your spot on the team. No more of this stuff! You’re now on double secret probation.” So last night he gets arrested “for hit and run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license.”

That’s FIVE LEGAL VIOLATIONS since May 30th! Maybe you want individuals like that playing Georgia Football, but I don’t! Even if he was the Governor’s son, he should immediately be dismissed from the team. No further explanation needed. Some get one or two passes. A few get 3 passes. NOBODY gets 5 passes. Send him home now CMR!!!!

I don’t think many of you have spent much time in Athens.

I had forgotten about this but this should let you know how over zealous Athens-Clarke county can be. The garbage man once left my trash can within a couple of feet of the road. About two weeks later I was greeted by an Athens-Clarke county police officer with a summons to show up in court or pay a fine. Since I don’t technically own the trash can I also because I was a little curious I showed up in court. The assistant district attorney actually pulled me asside and offerd me a plea bargin of $20. Amazed at the seriousness of the discussion I decided to plead not guilty and see what would happen next. She then explained that I would need to prepare for a trial in a few minutes and that she had an excellent record when it came to such cases. I started to laugh but at this point I read the summons about five more times to make sure that this was the about a trash can and not something more serious we were talking about. Nope, trash can. We ended up having a full trial where I called the police officer to the stand and questioned him on whether or not there were any witnesses that I placed the trash can there. Nope not even he had seen who put the trash can there. Prosecution called no witnesses and produced no evidence other than the officer. Verdict Guilty. $50 fine and a waste of who knows how much time and resources. The assistant DA was right, she had an excellent record in these type of cases. I later checked to make sure that this was not a misdeamonor, felony, or anything else that might go on my record. Just think about it a minute, a trash can position. Maybe I should have been suspended from work for that one.

Think about it a minute. Speeding Ticket, fender bender in parking garage, and resisting a parking attendent. Come on, are you people serious? Let the kid pay of the damage and fines and move on.

i don’t know of any where you can fail to appear and not have a warrant issued for your arrest. The initial charges are common offenses but the attitude that the rules don’t apply to me so I just won’t even go to court will not get it with a judge. You will come to court even if you have to be handcuffed and forced to.

chDawg

August 27th, 2010
6:21 pm

The rules apply to the police also and the rule is to take your license and impound your vehicle if you have not been physically notified your license has been suspended. That’s coming from an Athens-Clarke county judge who dismissed my case because the officer did not follow proper procedure.

Again the judge will require him to pay for the damages and pay the speeding ticket fine and that’s what any other normal citizen would have to do. None of those people will get suspended from their jobs though. Why do people keep trying to hold this kid to a higher level of punishment than they would get for the same offense?

All this arguing

August 27th, 2010
6:22 pm

about whether he can be arrested for a suspended license is immaterial. A judge had issued a bench warrant for his arrest for failure to appear, not for driving on a suspended license. He was arrested for an outstanding warrant, not for driving on a suspended license.

In addition to $1,500 bond on each of today’s two misdemeanor charges, Ealey was required to post another $480 bond because of an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in July in Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court on speeding and vehicle registration charges. A bonding company posted Ealey’s bonds.

If

chDawg

I live in a state called Georgia where the punishment for overlooking a court date for a SPEEDING TICKET is to have your license suspended. I don’t know why they don’t mail you a notice stating that you license has been suspended but they don’t. You’ll get notified of that the next time they pull you over for something. Since you license is suspended and you haven’t been notified of the suspended license they take it from you and also take your car. That’s not as bad as being arrested but its no picnic either. You see their goal is to collect the fine and not to put people in jail for minor offenses. They don’t arrest you right off the bat for missing the court date because they understand that people forget and other things happen.

Who wants to pay more taxes so that we can have a bunch of forgetful or overly busy people sitting in jail? The judge has the option of issuing a bench warrant.

Now I agree

August 27th, 2010
6:33 pm

that this is not the end of the world because this kid made some mistakes, but I also think that a pattern seems to be developing with this young man and if UGA is serious about helping their students grow and develop then some one needs to intervene with this young man to insure that he knows that this is not the right path for him to be on. Next time it could be more serious. Someone could get hurt.

The failure to appear warrant

August 27th, 2010

was issued Aug 12 for a July 12 court date, so we really don’t know if they tried to find him during that intervening month. You would think that with all the UGA fans in Athens, someone (police, court clerks, etc) would have let the coaches know before it reached the point of a warrant being issued.

From experience, they do not try to find you. The police department is overworked as it is. There are not enough resources to track down everyone who doesn’t show up for a speeding ticket violation.

The first set of consequences are pretty serious if they pull you over again though. Taking your license and car is no small thing.

if you let the little things go, then you will soon be faced with escalating crime, and chaos. Drive 100 in a 55, well it’s just speeding, we all do it. No tag, no big deal. Don’ go to court, no big deal. Hit someone’s car, cause $1,000 damage, leave the scene and let them pay for the damages, no big deal. What’s the problem, no big deal, we got more serious crimes to pursue. Then you have someone’s mother killed by a speeding car, a son is killed by a DUI because these people were not held accountable for the little things.

If the failure to appear was in another county then the Athens police probably didn’t know about it until his tag number was run.

America is a nation of laws, but not a nation of unlimited resources and manpower. If you understood how the system works then you would understand how a minor offense can fall through the cracks like this.

I’ve seen a police department so strapped for cash that they suggested they could require convicted criminals on probation to take a drug test but not actually have the lab test the samples to save money.

And you want to have an officer take time out of their day to pick up people who forget to show up for a court date for a speeding ticket. They barely have enough time to pickup the guy who skipped bail for robbery.

100mph in 55mph is wreckless driving and that can get you a go direct to jail card. Missing a court date does not lead to a life of crime. Driving with a suspended license is stupid but does not lead to a life of crime. Next thing you know he will be driving a scooter the wrong way. Without a license.

A suspended license does not directly lead to a failure to appear warrant. That’s up to the judge. If there is a warrant they don’t always notify you in a way that is convenient to you. You may find out when you get pulled over for something else.

If they could directly communicate with you at will they might leave you a message that said hey by the we issued a warrant for you and will probably arrest you the next time we see you. How about you just come by and pay the fine and if not we will arrest you at our earliest convient. Maybe they could just text you before hand.

Are you serious? They let you know when they arrest you. It actually works better for them that way. More serious criminals might want to make break for it after they get that text.

The bigger question would be if the warrant was issued on Aug. 12th then how come it took them until Aug. 27th to arrest him? It’s not like they didn’t know exactly where he would be every day. Hello football practice.

The answer would be because they don’t come after you for bench warrants on speeding tickets. They wait until they pull you over for something else because it’s not that serious of an offense.

The kid who did do something serious did get kicked off the team. It’s funny how the ones wanting him kicked off the team are fans of teams that will have to stop him on the field. Nothing hypocritical in that.

ChDawg…….you are just another sightless homer. What this idiot did was very serious and also damages the Image of UGA. Go watch Mark Richts press conference today because he was P O’ed and rightly so. But Mark Richt should have really made a bigger example of Ealey instead of a 1 game suspension and other internal consequences.

My last comment. I don’t know how tough Coach Richt was on this idiot. But, If we could bring Coach Erk back to talk to Washon, Mr. Easley would know what a butt chewing is about. He would never want another one from Coach Russell.

Come on folks. Lots of these guys on the team have always been told they were invincible. Now they are grown up. They need to get it and obviously they ain’t getting it from mommy or daddy (if he is around).

The question of whether Washaun knew his license was suspended has been answered by Coach Richt. He knew.

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s what Richt said according to the official UGA press release:

“I’m extremely disappointed in Washaun’s lack of good judgment,” Richt said
in a statement. “He was fully aware of his suspended license and had been
instructed not to get behind the wheel. As a result he’ll miss at least the
first game and will also be subject to internal discipline.”

“We spend a lot of time going over every single player making sure their
licenses are up to date and if they’re not making them aware of that and
letting them know they can’t drive,” Richt said in his post-practice media
session. “Josh Brooks, our director of football operations, and Bryan
McClendon saw him face-to-face and he said he wouldn’t drive. He drove a
short distance, and he’s going to pay a severe price for it. It’s pretty
simple: if you’ve got a suspended license, don’t drive.

“If he handles this the way he should and behaves between now and the next
one, he has a pretty good chance of playing,” Richt continued. “He has to
show me he deserves to go back and not only play but also practice. I’m not
saying it won’t be more than one [game].”

Ealey is an idiot. Apparently this is a disease that is rampant amongst college football players. These mostly dim witted young men get full ride scholarships to college, yet can barely score a minimum on SAT or speak intelligently. I’M NOT SAYING ALL ARE DIM WITTED SO DON’T GO THERE.

With the tough economic times we are faced with, why don’t colleges across the board institute a policy…. you screw up… you lose your scholarship… period! At that point you will either weed out the bad seeds, who frankly never plan on going past a 2nd year anyway. I would guess the majority have barely passing grades.

The colleges are to blame for allowing this thug, slackass, barely literate, prima donna, troublemaker, brat mentality, to keep embarrassing our colleges and universities.

Far too many excellent students are passed over for these jerks.

Ealey had 3 problems with the law in 3 months! hahahah 1 game suspension ain’t enough. May 30, ticket for no tag and Speeding. Fool didn’t go to court on July 12. He is too good for the law to touch him. Aug. 12th Bench warrent for failure to appear and license suspended. Aug. 27th hits a parked car. Ealey knew all of this stuff and didn’t do anything to get things right and just kept piling up the crap. 1 Game Suspension for 3 problems with the LAW in 3 months.
Richt will still be a joke on punishment. The coaches knew about the other stuff before the Hit-n-Run show some B@lls Richt. Don’t do anything to Ealey! Make the team suffer. The Starters on both sides of the ball will only get to play the 1st series only in the La Laf game then send them to the locker room and make them take off their uniforms and go sit in the stands. Play only Walk-ons and redshirt freshmen. You don’t think that will send a mesage to your TEAM. It is a different player all the time so the kids are not getting the message as a WHOLE TEAM.

Hey patrick and chDawg, you don’t get off that easy!

You know what makes you two the Doooshbags Of The Day? You guys spent nearly 5 hours arguing something when you didn’t even know the facts! “Oh, but when I was arrested the judge threw it out because I wasn’t notified.” “Yeah, me too. Every time I get arrested for driving on a suspended license, the judge throws it out because I didn’t know my license was suspended.” “He should just keep on driving because he didn’t know his license was suspended.” “Blah, blah, blah, I don’t know what I’m talking about and I don’t know when to shut up, blah, blah.”

Are you two GONE NOW, or are you just too embarrassed to come back and say YOU WERE WRONG? You posted message after message calling ME the moron. You argued for HOURS about how Ealey couldn’t have possibly known his license was suspended.

Twin Doooshbags Of The Day! You two should be forced to don a twin fart suit and smell each others farts for at least as long as you argued something you knew nothing about. (But I’m not even sure you would consider that ‘punishment’.)

And as for you saying “there are no consequences” for him driving on a suspended license. Well, WRONG AGAIN! Ealey could POSSIBLY do 5 YEARS in jail. Up to FIVE YEARS, but that’s not a consequence in your worlds is it? The LAW allows that. Look it up if in doubt.

Nevertheless the DAMAGE is done. Ealey arrested is on the front page of the AJC. It’s on ESPN. It’s on the local TV stations. Opponents will be bringing sirens and flashing police lights to UGA games this year. There ARE consequences for irresponsibility. Yet another black eye and people are lining up to say, “It’s OK. Just give him the ball and let him play.”

THAT is the real problem here. Until things change, there will be more arrests, more unruly and undisciplined behavior. Stupid is as stupid is permitted to do.

I WON and I’m going to bed now with a smile on my face. Thanks again patrick and chDawg…

even with him knowing.UGA knowing, God knowing, and my 3 pound chihuahua knowing, if he was not properly NOTIFIED the case will be dismissed. nor can he be charged with driving on a suspend DL. Now we dont know if he was notified properly. Both of our arguments are based on the assumption that he was not. Time will tell. tired of this crap

August 28th, 2010
1:25 am

patrick says, “nor can he be charged with driving on a suspend DL”…You are truly unbelievable!! Now try to follow along if you can.

1. Ealey was charged with the speeding and tag violations on May 30, and when he failed to appear for a July 12 hearing, his driver’s license was suspended, Municipal Court Clerk Rhonda Bolton said Friday.

2. Richt was upset that Ealey drove despite knowing his license was suspended and assuring Georgia director of football operations Josh Brooks and running backs coach Bryan McClendon that he would not get behind the wheel. “He saw them face to face and knew he had a suspended license and said he wouldn’t drive,” Richt said.

3. “He was well aware. We were well aware,” Richt said. “If you have a suspended license, you can’t get behind the wheel of a car.” But Ealey was behind the wheel of a 2004 Chevrolet Impala early Friday, Williamson said. “It was foolish,” Richt said.

4. “He admitted to driving the vehicle, admitted to being involved in an accident,” Williamson said. Officers then determined that Ealey’s license was suspended, leading to a second charge, Williamson said.

HE WAS CHARGED with driving with a suspended license. Get it? He KNEW his license was suspended. Did he just wake up one day and realize that? No. He was NOTIFIED. Apparently Richt was notified and the coaches were notified and they all sat down and discussed it at length. “If you have a suspended license, you can’t get behind the wheel of a car,” Richt said.

Do you understand he was charged with driving with a suspended license? Do you understand that he KNEW he was driving with a suspended license? Do you understand he admitted to police that he was behind the wheel of the Impala?

Why is it so hard for you to accept that the DMV had 43 DAYS to notify him that his license was suspended and that he knew it was BEFORE he was charged with driving with a suspended license? How does one know their license has been suspended if they have not been notified that it has been suspended?

Tired,

It is actually a lot worse than that. Coach Richt should have made Washaun Ealey (1) go to Court July 12, (2) when he failed to appear and then had his license suspended because he failed to appear, Coach Richt should have made Washaun Ealey go and turn himself in

12-2

August 28th, 2010

When you are a given a ticket for speeding and improper registration of a vehicle, and are told you must appear before the Court and square it, your head coach # 1 in the US in Fulmer Cup and # 2 in the US in Fulmer Cup All-Time, has to take responsibility for his RECRUITED PLAYERS here and make sure they WANT to tell their coach what is going on.

In this case, Coach Richt KNEW.

Instead, Coach Richt MADE A HUGE ERROR.

He told Washaun Ealey NOT TO GO SQUARE IT, but hide from it by NOT DRIVING.

We are NOT properly taking responsibility for our RECRUITS since the Jim Donnan recruits left for the NFL.

There is NOT 1 Arrest / Suspension properly handled by Coach Richt since March this season.

I don’t EVEN know where to start with you son.

You are NOT going to find some loophole you can use to squirm away from the fact that Coach Richt did NOT KNOW that Washaun Ealey had issues with the Law that he HAD NOT TAKEN CARE OF.

“Don’t drive.” THAT takes care of the issue Coach Richt ?

Coach Richt you live in a fantasy world where you just don’t know how to deal with this world.

First, you think UGA is a home for wayward children, whom you can REFORM; then you FORGIVE; then you play a football game played by men – and come up short.

Must regain control

August 28th, 2010
5:19 am

We must regain control of the UGA football program NOW! Where is the discipline? Where is responsibility? Where is love, loyalty and dedication to the team and the university? It looks to me like character and intelligence is no longer a consideration for UGA football recruits. CMR must regain control and the team and he must do it NOW! Supporters of the UGA football team are being embarassed almost weekly and frankly, we are growing tired of it. CMR needs to gain control or CMR needs to go. This isssue is not negotiable.

How did Ealey get by?

August 28th, 2010
5:24 am

How did WEaley get by with outstanding warrants and CMR not know? With the number of coaches Georgia has, why don’t the position coaches take care of establishing disciple in the players lives and not just on the field. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of arrests after arrests. Our football program will soon be able to use police blotter pictures for the game programs for most of our players. I feel sorry for the good, smart, law-abiding players on the team who are consistently being grouped with these morons. Throw away your college education, throw away the team, throw away your future … just do what you want to do now and don’t worry about anyone but you. CMR, I am putting you on notice, I will no longer support a coach who cannot bring his players (and even his stars) under control. CMR, I respect you as a man but I do not have respect for the way you handle discipline on the UGA football team.

CMR knew

August 28th, 2010
5:33 am

CMR knew Ealey’s liscense had been suspended. Did he make him go to court? NO. Did he make him turn himself in? NO. Did he take action? NO. They just made him make a “pinky promise” not to drive. Knowing the law had been broken should have made Ealey take immediate action. CMR and the coaches aided Ealey in ducking the law. Come on CMR, star or no star … Ealey probably needs to sit out at least two and possibly three games to make believers of the rest of the thugs and morons on the team. I would prefer to lose to SC than to win with the low life thugs we’re trying to win with. CMR you need to find the right answers to the criminal element (yes, breaking any law makes you a criminal) on the team. If they can’t abide by the law, they don’t need to be a part of the UGA team. Won’t you come home Vince Dooley?

Let’s read the police report from every college town in the southeast. You have over 100 teenage to 21 year old youngmen in the program. I would believe the general student population would mirror a athletic programs arrest in percentage. I like CMR take the battery and sexual assaults with no room for excuses. Driving a scooter and getting a ticket? give me a break!
The question for most of these players getting in trouble is –
WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT AT 3 AM?
Issue a curfew of mid-night on weekdays and 1 AM on the weekend and most of these problems will end. DO a bed check and run the heck out the players not in by the curfew.

This “legal expert” has been making statements that Ealey doesn’t have anything to worry about from the law because they have to prove that he had been notified that his license was suspended. Only problem is Ealey had told his coaches previously that his license was suspended

From one of the other news items on AJC

Richt was upset that Ealey drove despite knowing his license was suspended and assuring Georgia director of football operations Josh Brooks and running backs coach Bryan McClendon that he would not get behind the wheel.

I need to tell Greg McGarity that Mark needs to ease off on his disciplinary actions- giving Tavarres King a game suspension for underage possession is just not done in major college football. When Urban had two freshmen arrested for the same thing this summer, they got off with a slap on the wrist.

That does not make the rest of us look good who try to overlook those things. Can’t say anything to Urban since he is already tight as a drum dealing with his ego-driven freshmen, and hearing about the Dream Team Mark Richt is assembling.
