Bulldog buzz words: Pounding the rock, attacking, aggressive, versatile … party!

Washaun Ealey will get plenty of chances to "pound the rock" this season. Don't you love that kind of talk? (Curtis Compton / AJC)

Washaun Ealey will get plenty of chances to "pound the rock" this season. Don't you love that kind of talk? (Curtis Compton / AJC)

OK, countdown to kickoff of the season is 30 days, and the anticipation is building. Some quotes to get Dawg fans even more revved up:

“We’re definitely going to use them a lot this year. They’re going to get plenty, plenty, plenty of touches. If we have to pound the rock, we’re going to pound the rock. Our running backs are tough enough, and we’re going to be able to methodically march down the field.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray talking about how he’ll rely on tailbacks Caleb King and Washaun Ealey this season. For old-school Georgia football fans, this kind of talk is almost like porn.

“It feels great knowing that I’ve got just one assignment: to attack. It takes a lot of pressure off you knowing there’s one thing you’ve got to do and you can focus on that one thing and be great at it.”

Linebacker Justin Houston on his role in the 3-4 defense, in which he expects to rush the passer more than 50 percent of the time.

“It seems like it’s going to be a more aggressive D, and that’s something that we need here.”

Linebacker Darryl Gamble, sounding like he’d just watched some film from the Willie Martinez era.

“I don’t wanna give away too much of the game plan. But we’ll be pretty versatile. We’ll probably be more versatile than we’ve been in awhile.”

Mark Richt, talking about an offensive approach that Mike Bobo says likely will feature wrinkles like two-tight-end sets.

PARTY IN THE UGA

How good a sport is Richt? He even consented to a cameo role in a video spoof of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” that UGA orientation leaders did this summer. The clip has been drawing some online attention this week in the wake of the No. 1 party school announcement. If you haven’t seen it, be warned: It’s pretty silly and the singing won’t win anyone a role on “Glee.” But the incoming freshmen probably enjoyed it and Richt deserves kudos for going along with the fun.

It would be nice to have a D again that can go and get the ball back for the O. BVG used to have them doing it on command.

the d was the problem since 2005. Even in 2005, we should have known there was a huge problem.

DJ throws 24 TD’s to only 5 picks.

D gives up 35 unanswered to WV in Sugar Bowl.

not to mention the Auburn game. Losing to Brandon “pick 6 ” Cox. Despite the Florida game, win the Auburn game and maybe we could have played for the title.

Willie was the problem and it got worse every year.

If we improve 30% and keep the offense clicking, we can win 10 games. Anything more than that and we can compete with anyone.

It’s all on Grantham

DawginLex,
I would have to say you are right about this one. I defended Willie at different times. It may not have been all Willie, but the buck stops with the DC. The UT debacle last year was all on him, and despite what he may have pulled off later, that was the nail in his coffin. Cox outgunned Arkansas (hats off to him, too) to pull that one out. Then there was the LSU debacle, even with the bogus call, the D should have held. Nobody really thought the Dawgs had an honest shot at the Gators last year. This year, maybe. The Gators are loaded with talent. They could have a little bit of a leadership crisis, though, without Tebow and Charlie Strong. All I can say is that it will be interesting to see how it plays out. A ten win season, even with the new D and QB should be within the dawgs’ grasp.

DawginLex : Your points made above were all the rage in 2009 for the masses that overlooked turnover ratios and penalities for. At Tennessee 2009, I gotta believe your guys were outplayed and, Ahem, outcoached. Now that the 2010 is quickly approaching, we (your friends in the East) will be watching to see if things get better. Shoot, compared to last year, those catagories couldn’t get worse…Solve those two issues, outscore your opponents and things will be good for UGA.

There is absolutely NO reason the Dawgs cannot improve by 3 – 4 games this season.

There is something about college football or high school football that says last year means nothing. It’s this year and this is a new team. There are new faces, new leaders, new attitudes. Somebody gained twenty pounds of muscle and somebody grew two inches and somebody learned a new technique. There is fresh blood to mentor the defenders with new perspectives mixed with a return to traditional Bulldog defense. Eleven men to the ball!!! Junkyard Dawgs!!!

This IS the pagentry of college football, opening the cornucopia of possibilities that greets us each fall. Can you smell it? That thing you associate with the turning of the leaves and the shrill of the wistle?

Is your blood rushing yet? Are you ready to see somebody knock the snot bubbles out of some pitiable opponent? Are you ready for toe to meet leather?

I think I’ll go tackle my ol’ lady! Go Dawgs!!

Great post, Bill, as always. I really enjoy your blog.

Most posters here are true fans who like me wish only the best for the team this season. I want to see the Dawgs claw and scratch and bite (figuratively, of course) in every game this year, and based on what you’ve reported so far I’ll get my wish.

The bugs on this site can be sometimes amusing, but overall the jorts-fans here are just plain obnoxious blowhards who are too stupid to find their own blog to post incoherent rants.

UGA must be doing something right to get under their skin so much.

I remember when we beat Tech last year , they were wanting to give Willie the credit. But the fact is if you play sit at home defense and stick with your man , ANYONE can beat a triple option offense. Just stick with the man across from you and they can’t do anything. Grantham is gonna add meanness to this defense and when Tech rolls into Athens this year, it will be ugly.

Overrated?,

The Dawgs own LSU and with the exception of the embarrassing black out trouncing, the dawgs own Bama. If not for Tebow, the last four years would have been very different with FL. UT, granted, there is just plain no excuse for it. Clearly, you have based your opinion on the last two seasons. Richt has been here for 10 years, and is among a select few coaches in the W category.

It’s okay, though, please keep underestimating this team. UF and Alabama are so good that they only need to be concerned with one another.

How much did the red panties contribute to the #1 party school ranking?

Does the UGA bookstore now sell red panties, or do you get one free with every textbook you buy?

The majority of undergrads are not of legal drinking age, so how are they getting all the booze?

Hmmm… good questions.

Big L’s comment got me to thinking – again – that the kind of aggressive, attacking defense that we’re about to employ can get burned by that option offense that Johnson and Tech uses. Gambling and lack of discipline when defending that offense can kill you. Same with a coach like Spurrier, screens and traps can kill us too. Just hope that we’ve got the athletes – particularly the ‘cover guys’ – that can make up for the mistakes that will undoubtedly come.
