Mark Richt on A.J. Green: "He's as good as I've seen." (Associated Press)
Thanks to a newsy week in the Bulldog Nation, including SEC Media Days, there were quite a few quotes that caught my eye or that I particularly enjoyed this week. Check them out, and if any of them inspire you, have at it in the comments section. …
“Never.”
— A.J. Green when asked if he’s ever been to Miami
“Hahaha. This talk about A.J. is hilarious. That country boy ain’t never been to Miami!!! You can put those rumors to rest.”
— Former teammate Michael Moore on Twitter after reports Green is the subject of an NCAA inquiry about the infamous “Agentgate” party in South Beach
“You know, with me being a veteran and helping Aaron out, I believe I can instill that confidence level that he needs to throw the ball and just to know that he has that primary receiver out there. Whenever he’s in trouble, he can just throw it. It don’t have to be a great ball, it can be whatever, and I can make a play on it.”
—A confident A.J. Green on playing this season with an inexperienced quarterback in Aaron Murray
“We’re going to play with a lot of energy. If we can do that and find a way to keep from beating ourselves, which I think we did to a certain extent last season with our turnover ratio and our penalty count, if we could find a way to keep from beating ourselves, I think we’ll be a pretty good football team.”
— Mark Richt summing up the Dogs’ 2010 prospects
“I think there’s a chance to have a great complement of run and pass and keep people very honest with it.”
— Mark Richt on how double-coverage of Green can help Georgia’s running game
“I think he’s been a good blocker, not a great blocker. I think he needs to get better at really becoming a factor as a blocker. I can’t hardly say much about his ability to run routes and go after a ball and get it. He’s as good as I’ve seen. He’s special in that way.”
— Mark Richt on how star player Green can get even better
“When the protection is there, the route is open, put it on ’em. If the protection is not there, let’s throw the ball away, let’s hit a check down, let’s take a sack if you have to. Let’s make sure at the end of every drive we kick the ball, an extra point, field goal, or punt.”
— Mark Richt on his advice to his young quarterback
Speaking of punting …
“Quite frankly, we struggled offensively. When he was punting there was a lot of grass in front of him. Too much grass. But he changed field position for us in a big way last year. This year, my guess is, he won’t have quite that average because I think — I hope — he’ll be punting with less grass in front of him. Hopefully he punts a lot less.”
— Mark Richt on having the nation’s top punter last season in Drew Butler
“Opening question is about my mother. Doesn’t matter where I go, that’s the question I get. … So she’s certainly a great personality. Everybody loves her because she subscribes to the theory speak first, think second, the exact opposite of my dad. So hopefully I try to take that little portion of my dad — think first, speak second. But I do have a lot of her in me, too.”
— Former Georgia coaching assistant Derek Dooley, son of Vince and Barbara, in his first SEC Media Days appearance as Tennessee’s head coach
“I wouldn’t trade my four years at Georgia for anything.”
— Wimbledon legend John Isner on ESPN2 after moving on to the semifinals of the Atlanta Tennis Championships
“Fred Munzenmaier”
— Mark Richt showing his quick wit when asked on camera at SEC Media Days by the Dogs’ Shaun Chapas who is his favorite fullback
BULLDOG BITES
UGA legend Dan Magill practically helped raise Greg McGarity, so it’s not surprising he’s backing the Athens native to be Georgia’s new athletics director. If you want to know more about McGarity’s Bulldog bona fides, check out Magill’s latest column in the Athens Banner-Herald. …And happy birthday wishes go out today to two great Dawgs: Jonathan King, my brother, a UGA grad and loyal fan who’s never predicted anything but a Georgia win, and Kevin Butler, father of Drew, an entertaining broadcaster and one of the most beloved Bulldog heroes for many reasons, including that unforgettable kick against Clemson. Many happy returns, guys!

It’s gonna be a good year DAWG fans! Aaron will surprise many with his early maturity, the line will be exceptional if we stay healthy, defense may have early struggles with new system but will be clicking by the time it matters (anything will be an upgrade from last year). Can’t wait until September 3!

Bill , so much has been made about the NCAA investigation I would like to know from what source did the NCAA think that UGA was even involved in the agent misconduct in Miami. I think that with Southern Cal in all kind of trouble that Kiffin probably is involved in this “WITCH HUNT” against the SEC. Sounds like something he would do. Also when someone brings a complaint to the NCAA if they research it and kind out that the allegation is complete BS then what does the NCAA do to the accuser?

Shane, my sentiments exactly. The Doors and beer by the pool. Bill, that was one of if not the most memorable kick in Georgia history. Kevin Butler had ice water in his veins. The Dawgs greatest kicks would make a nice blog topic. I was just a kid, but another memorable (non)kick was Etter picking up a bad snap and running it in for a touchdown against the Gators to win the game in 1964.

All you supporters of Coach Richt harp about what a fine Christian person he is. Yet, you turn a blind eye to the thuggery that he brings to Athens as fodder for the football program. I understand that there have been 42 arrests of UGA football players and staff in the last three years; I haven’t verified the number but every month or so I read of yet another arrest. Is this the sort of climate you want in Athens when your kids attend UGA? Or are you oblivious to everything other than football success?
Don’t bother replying that thuggery is OK because every other school does it. It’s not true.
When you say ThUGA, you’ve said it all.

Do you know anything on a personal level about Mark Richt? He is a quality Christian man. How is your walk with the Lord? How many people have you brought to Christ. How many children have you adopted? How many mission trips to 3rd world countries have you gone to in order to spread the gospel? I can go on and on.
Don’t insult his intelligence and act that you are better than Mark Richt as a Christian. What is happening with the players is an embarrassment for us. I don’t hold Richt accountable for the players behaviors in the offseason. He can’t control how these 18-22 year olds respond to in particular situations 24 hours a day.
If you know who the person is of Mark Richt you would not be spouting off on his character like you did. I’ll take him as a coach any day of the year. Would I like to win a NC? absolutley, who wouldn’t. Has he, no obviously. There is a lot more to life than football and Mark Richt knows that. Have you ever just sat and thought maybe Christ brought some of the players to UGA not so much for football, but for CMR to lead them to Christ? The Lord works in ways that we can not comprehend. I’m waiting for your respnse on your walk with Christ and how many you have introduced to Jesus? Adoption & mission trips. This ought to be good……….

If we run the ball 30-40 times a game then we will win. Period. Let our 2 all american fullbacks get 5-10 touches a game. The only way UGA will win the BCS is to be a power running team. We have the line and backs to get it done. Just do it!! Literally CMB should not even worry about the score and simply see if he can get 45 running plays in a game. WE would win!!

Richt *is* like a pastor, however: he’s solid, but his “kids” are out of control.

That’s kinda fits Richt to a tee.
Burroughston Broch
July 24th, 2010
6:27 pm
DIT, I don’t agree with you at all. Hayseed Dixie, we might find some common ground.
A football coach is not a Christian pastor; he’s a football coach and is paid to win big and to keep the faithful (alumni or not) happy and giving sizable sums of money to the athletic association. As long as he wins big, it doesn’t matter to the faithful whether he’s a Christian, an atheist, an agnostic, a jew ,or a muslim.
The UGA football coach personally selects all of his recruits and should consider their personal habits before making his selection. He is not a pastor who must take whatever walks in the front door. He is not like a father dealing with his own children. He is responsible for all of his recruits and players; if they don’t meet minimum standards of acceptable behavior then he should send them on their way.
So, DIT and Hayseed Dixie, are you comfortable with the current situation in Athens? I for one am glad that my children graduated from UGA before the current situation developed, and I hope that the current situation will be corrected before my grandchildren reach college age.

Thank goodness your kids graduated long before and hopefully your grandkids will never have to associate with any college kids that don’t have pristine driving record or tasted a beer before thier 21st birthday.
BTW, why does it matter? are you afraid that some football player’s antics is going to “rub” off on them? Are your grandkids prone to copycat behavior?
And I can promise you whatever years your kids graduated, this and plenty worse was going on, probably a few feet away.

DIT, I appreciate your relationship with Christ, as long as it isn’t hypocritical. RIcht turns his head as The Bagman Garner hands our his candy, the school allows the athletes to cheat their way through school and the Athletic Department greases the skids by giving the players girlfriends the credit cards. Stop pretending he’s a saint, when he knows all this goes on.

Burroughston Broch –you are an idiot! A coach has more responsibility to a player and his parents than just making sure the team wins. And you obviously don’t know anything about Christianity. It is not a religion! It is a relationship that exist between a person and his Lord.
Christ himself commanded that all Christians put that first (even over football) and He himself didn’t just associate with “good people”.
But when it comes your final days and you go before Him, just tell him that your team won a lot of football games and see where that gets you. And you WILL go before him some day!

Do you really think that Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart, or any other credible head coach would want to risk his career by coming to UGA? There are way too many “so called” Dawg fans who throw fall down in the floor, kicking, screaming, infantile temper tantrums because they can’t have what they want, and have it RIGHT NOW!!! If you are a season ticket holder, and feel that way, turn in your tickets. Until empty seats appear in the stadium due to a lack of ticket sales, Coach Richt is our Man; and if someone else grabs up your vacated seat, you didn’t deserve it in the first place! In all fairness to you fit pitchin’ crybabies, who grew up in the “spare the rod to spoil the child” generation of unearned entitlement, it’s not your fault. Your Daddy wasn’t man enough to take a board to a$$ in order to teach you the value of patience; furthermore, your snot nosed attitudes do more harm to our program than our opponents, players, and coaches combined. MAN UP!! If you really want change, do it through the ticket office; if all you want to do is complain, take it home to parents.

When I played Gray Y football in 6th and 7th grades, our coach would sometimes take the team down to the flats to see GT practice. When my soon to be brother-in-law heard me talking about one such visit, he told me “you just hold on a minute boy.” “If anyone is going to expose you to college football, you’re going to go with me to Athens, so you’ll learn what the sport is really all about.” I will be forever grateful to, James D. Killingsworth, for rescuing me from a fate worse than death by introducing me to UGA football in 1960.
After I read your first post, I was all set to come on here and tell you about how much joy and laughter “whippin’ up on Tech” had brought me over the coarse of my lifetime, however, after reading all of your successive posts, I just didn’t have the heart to kick a man when he is down. those posts showed me the spirit of a broken man full of bitterness, hatred, disillusionment, and disgust in himself as well as his team. I realized that “but for the Grace of God there go I.” It almost makes me want to apologize for the fact that my team of choice has caused you such grief in your lifetime, but better you than me. May it always be you and not me; I don’t know that I could bear it. I almost wound up in your place, but escaped with my life. Burroughston Broch –A football coach is a football coach–yes. However, a Christian is a Christian, regardless of his/her career choice. A truly sincere Christian will share and talk about his faith, because that is who he or she is. Just like your friends and coworkers know what football team you cheer for, because that is a big part of your life. A Christian’s friends, coworkers, and others that he/she comes in contact with know it because it is a big part of a Christian’s life.
As a bulldawg, am I pleased with the off field issues?? Of course not. Do I agree with the discipline CMR administers?? Not always, but then I don’t know all the details. Am I glad a man of faith is leading young men at UGA?? Absolutely.
Yes, CMR’s job is to win ballgames and educate young men. However, that does not exclude him from being a Christian and living as such.

I have read your replies and am not convinced.
Regardless of whether the coach is a religious person or not (and I have no reason to suspect that the coach is not a religious person), his religion is not the prime job requirement. The prime job requirement is to win enough games to keep the faithful giving large sums of money to the Athletic Department. It is not trying to save thugs while they play football and play pretend students.
The coach is directly responsible for the character of his recruits and players. He selects every one and they serve at his pleasure. He should know the character of potential recruits and not bring known problems into his program. When one proves to be a continued problem, he should be sent packing.
I know that this sounds simplistic to apologists, but it is just this simple.

Burroughston Broch — we agree on a couple of points. 1) A coach’s primary role is to win games. 2) He should not bring known problems into the program. 3) A continued problem should be sent packing. I pretty much agree with these 3 points.
“Knowing the character” of each potential recruit is another story. I agree every reasonable effort should be made to determine if a recruit poses a character issue. Keep in mind that you are talking about 16,17,and 18 yr old kids. Could anyone project what you would and wouldn’t do at age 20, 21,or 22 when you were 17? Could even your parents? I know mine could not have. Yet, you want CMR or any football coach to be able to forecast the actions of dozens and dozens of recruits. And, use this ability to forecast behavior as a prerequisite to being offered a scholarship.
Let me reiterate, I am very disappointed at the off field issues the last several years. Have we had more than our share? Perhaps. Receiving a scholarship for any reason is an honor and comes with responsibilties. When a player fails to live up to the off field responsibilities, he should be dealt with accordingly. Do I think at times CMR has been too leinent? Perhaps. I would much rather do what I could to turn a young person’s life around than to ” send him packing” at the first error in judgement.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone……

Lets go back and take a look at your post. I think you have proven yourself to be a blind leader of the blind who has stumbled into a ditch!
First of all, I quote your comment: “The prime job requirement is to win enough games to keep the faithful giving large sums of money to the Athletic Department.” I think you have to agree that Coach Richt’s record speaks for itself. I don’t know of anyone who has discontinued or returned their ticket orders, but we will see how many consistently empty seats there are in the stadium this season. Now, I want you to be at each home game this season and provide us with the accurate number of empty seats per game. Please provide documentation.
Secondly, I quote you as saying: “When one proves to be a continued problem, he should be sent packing.” If you had been paying any attention to current events, you would have known that is exactly what Coach Richt has been doing. I can think of at least three players that he has “sent packing” as you put it, and at least one who chose to leave on his own to prevent being told to “go packing” Now, I want you to start your research over. You need to go back through the archives and identify those student athletes and document them for us.
Next, I reference your statement: “He should know the character of potential recruits and not bring known problems into his program.” I would like for you to submit to me a detailed essay on providing character analysis on potential recruits whose identities are protected by law until they reach the age of eighteen. I know for a fact that Coach Richt has, on occasion, withdrawn scholarship offers when something has been discovered that might be a potential problem. You can identify at least one such occasion if you are willing to do the research. Now, if my requests are bit more effort than you care to make, I think that it is safe to say that you are asking more from a very busy head coach than you are willing to demand of your self.
Finally, for your information, religion is practiced by people who sit in church pews, who never read their bibles, and are expecting a man behind a pulpit to preach them into heaven. It just doesn’t work that way. True Christianity is reality! A daily walk of your faith in all aspects of the life path that God has set before you. If you study his word, you please him. When you please him, he uses you, as in Coach Richts case, to sow seeds of life, truth, and victory into the lives of the young men that God himself has sent his way.

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!
The success of UGA this year depends on the DEFENSE.
I think your offense will be stout enough to be top 10.
I think A. Murray will be a very good QB for UGA.
It’s the DEFENSE that will go through some growing pains and will be the difference maker if UGA is catch up to Florida.
As I have said many times – UGA is poised for a very good year.
But until they beat Florida – I have to go with the Gators as UGA has not even been close to competitive the last 2 years.
Still think a 10 win season is very doable – and who knows – with Bama /FL playing reg season this year – which my lean is toward BAMA due to all the changes at Florida – Florida could lose in an upet to LSU or SC – you just never know. That’s why we settle it on the field!!
At any rate – I am pulling for the Dawgs in the SEC East this year.

BAMA STAN– You may be the most level headed, humble UA fan I have ever encountered. I didn’t know you existed. I couldn’t agree more about your analysis of our year. Assuming Murray stays healthy, I think we may have one of our most productive offenses in many years. Should Murray get hurt early, life will get real tough. Defensively, we have lots of talent, new coaching staff, players changing positions, and a new formation. Lots of uncertaintly, yet lots of excitement.
As far a beating UF, I think we have a better chance than the last two years. UF simply had better teams the last two years, as has often (not always) been the case the last 20 years UF has dominated the series.

Bama Stan I agree with some of the other dawg posters, that you’re alright for a bama fan, but if I remember correctly didn’t Coach Saban try to hire Coach Grantham? Same defensive thinking? I feel if we can come out of the hellhole over in Columbia with a win, we may give Florida a run for their money. We’ve got the weapons. Alot of critics are down on Murrey, but he did lead his team to a State championship at Plant city with a cracked leg bone. Yeah, I know that’s high school and a world away, but I feel it proves leadership, no matter what he did at G-Day, that’s just not a true indicator really. Hope we get to see you boys in Atlanta.

Bama Stan,
Give it a rest man. Everybody knows that practically all Bama fans pull for Georgia in the east over Fla and UT. Just about all of them except the few that live in Atl and have to hear the dawgs constant crap and end up trolling on here against UGA.
You’re part of the first group that has illusions that Georgia will win the east because A) You don’t want to have to beat Florida twice in one season which is a hard thing to do even if you did do it back in 1999. B) Beating Georgia is a lot easier to do than beating Florida which is why you Bama fans are pulling for Georgia this year.
You think Aaron Murray is the real deal? Gimme a break. Maybe one day he will be a better than average qb but if you think this freshman kid who looked very unsteady in the Gday game is gonna lead the dawgs past the gators in the east then you must be smoking something.
Georgia is strong in one area and that’s it. Their O-line is good but so is Florida’s O-line with 4 returning starters. They also have one great wr but after AJ Green the talent is totally unproven.
Everywhere else the dawgs are average- defensive-linebackers, D-lineman, dbs, no all conference or all americans to be seen outside of justin houston possibly being all conference. On offense their 2 running backs are average at best.
Get over it and realize the dawgs have zero chance of beating the gators this year. Nothing is going to dramatically change from the 49-10 and 41-17 beatdowns of the last 2 years. Face it. You will have to play and beat Florida twice and forget about Georgia.

Clarification to “J” in recent article about Georgia national championships
1942 – Ohio STate 9 – 1 record was rated the national champion by AP who rated at
that time at season’s end and not after bowl game.
1942 – Georgia 11 – 1 record was rated the national champion by Harris poll which
was the official poll back then, and rated national champion after bowl game.
1942 – Georgia and Ohio STate were both invited to play in the Rose Bowl for
the national championship, but because Ohio STate was already voted NC by
AP, they declined and lost in another bowl.
Georgia accepted the Rose Bowl and played UCLA, winning and was declared
national champ by Harris and several other polls.
Since Ohio STate has played Georgia in a couple of bowls and lost.
Since Ohio State has played SEC teams, 9 times, and has lost all 9.
If Georgia would switch from the East Division of the SEC, to the Big
Ten, they would replace Ohio STate as the perennial choice for Big
Ten and BCS playoffs, having also beaten Michigan, Purdue (twice) and
Wisconsin (twice) in bowls.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like Miami and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bullcrap Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in
Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
And red panties falling from the sky.

I think Mark Richt screwed up BIG TIME! I believe he will eventually lose his job for depending on 2 unproving assistent coaches(Martinez/M.Bobo). When Brian VanGorder left he should of hired the best assistent coach that money could buy or at least an assistent coach who has coached in a championship environment. You can’t half step in the SEC or you will pay a heavy price down the road. I think coach Grantham will do a good job with the defense but I’m still concern with Bobo poor play calling. I think Nick Saban will make it very difficult for Mark Richt to unseat him. When Bama and Fla were down Mark Richt should of had the best assistent coaches in place to keep those teams down. It might be too late now.
