Buck Belue's touchdown pass to Lindsay Scott was a "fluke" play, the Orlando Sentinel says. (University of Georgia)
Say this for the Orlando Sentinel: They’re at least consistent in their orange and blue advocacy.
You’ll recall that the Sentinel, whose sportswriters appear to operate as an unofficial arm of the Gators sports information program, drew headlines a while back for ranking the Georgia Bulldogs as only the 64th best team in the country this season.
Before that, the Sentinel had been among the first of the media outlets in states surrounding us to get the Mark-Richt-on-the-hot-seat bandwagon rolling. And, of course, they did it in typical hyperbolic style, noting in complete disregard to the facts that “It seems almost every season Richt’s name comes up as being on the hot seat.”
Now the Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi has taken another flying leap into absurdity. In writing about the SEC Media Days, he opened his latest blog saying, “Keep hearing and reading about how Georgia coach Mark Richt is on the imaginary hot seat.”
Such talk, Bianchi generously allows, “is a disservice to one of the classiest coaches in college football and one of the best coaches Georgia has ever had.” (It was, of course, Bianchi who raised the “hot seat” question question to Richt at the SEC media gathering.)
Naturally, he was just setting up Georgia fans for the Sentinel’s latest swipe. The problem, he says, is “Georgia fans have way too high of an opinion of their program. In fact, I believe an argument could be made that Georgia is the the most overrated program in college football history.”
His case consists mainly of calling Lindsay Scott’s touchdown catch in the 1980 game against the Gators “one of the biggest fluke plays in college football history,” and he concludes that without the national title that the Bulldogs won that year thanks to Herschel Walker and Scott, “Georgia would be closer in history and tradition to South Carolina than it is to Florida.”
Yes, we all know Florida has dominated the Dogs-Gators rivalry the past 20 years (the only period of college football history Gators fans pay any attention to) and that Florida has won a couple of BCS national titles and Georgia hasn’t.
But Bianchi’s notion that Georgia football history is pretty much limited to 1980 is so far off the mark it’s embarrassing. If he checked NCAA records, he’d find UGA is ranked as one of the Top 15 winningest college football programs of all time … and ahead of the University of Florida.
It’s one thing to try and rile up a rival state’s fandom, but at least Bianchi and the Sentinel could try and keep it based in reality.

That Buck to Lindsey play apparently rankles Bianchi to this day. Buck maintains that Georgia would have won the game even without it, and makes a compelling case.

If Fla. hadn’t won their 2 NC’s, I doubt if they would bragging either. Any play that changes the outlook of the game could be called a fluke. A lot of the plays that CRYING TIM TEBOW made over the last 4 years could be called fluke plays.

Fluke plays are what makes college football so much fun — remember Flutie’s pass against Miami and countless others. Here are some numbers that show the long-term quality of the Georgia and Florida programs. UGA has a 26-16 bowl record and UP has and 18-19 record. Nuff said!

If memory serves me right the Dawgs owned the Gators in the 70’s 80’s and early 90’s and still lead in over all wins in the series. It was not untill Darth Visor arrived to coach the reptiles that they started to win anything. For years Florida was known as the most talented team in the conference but could never win it. I belive that would be over rated. The Dawgs will win this year and the Tables will start to turn back toward the red and black.

If you go nearly 60 years without winning your own conference, I think it should take more than 19 years of success before you have the right to talk trash to ANYONE, with the possible exception of Vanderbilt. Certainly not to the 3rd most successful program in your conference. Gator fans were acting that way before they even won a single conference title, so maybe it’s just the way they are. They’ll suck again soon enough, it happens to everyone. If it happened to FSU and Miami, two programs that at their height were more dominant than UF, you can bet it will happen to UF.
And you can’t win a mythical title, so let’s quit talking about fictional national titles – including ours in ‘42 and ‘80. Georgia has won more SEC titles than Florida, and trails only Alabama and Tennessee (by one). That’s what counts.
As for Richt being on the hot seat – let’s face it, he should be. His teams, despite great recruiting have underachieved since 2006 with the exception of the last half of ‘07 (the first half included an ugly loss at home to S. Carolina, a blowout loss at Tennessee, and a narrow escape at Vandy).
Georgia has been fairly mediocre for 3 and a half out of the last 4 seasons, at least by the standards of the 15th winningest program in football and a perennial Top-10 recruiter. If Richt isn’t on the hot seat, then why didn’t Jim Donnan get the same consideration? Since ‘04, Richt’s teams have looked a lot like Donnan’s.

Well ….. He is right. 30 years since the national championship. 25 loses to the Gators in that time span. The only team that considers Georgia Florida “a rivalry” is Georgia. For the Gators it is a good old fashion Georgia ass-kicking homecoming game. I bet Vanderbilt’s record against Georgia during that time period is as good as Georgia’s record against Florida. Some “rivalry”.

I think everyone likes to pick on the Dawgs because they’re easy targets. Not because of their football team (it’s been good, great and bad, just like all the rest) but because of their fans. Really, when UGA is a “rivalry” with so many schools throughout history (FL, AU, CLEM, GT, UT etc etc) you begin to wonder if it has anything to do with football or if it has EVERYTHING to do with a Dog’s incessant need to pick a fight. You’d think being the big brother school in a great state would be enough, but the Dog’s inferiority complex runs deep.
I’ll freely admit Tech has an inferiority complex, too.
As Dog fans understand, when you see someone with such a complex, you gotta just tweak it a little. Congrats, Orlando Writer Dude… nicely played.

According to the most accurate college football guy, Florida is overrated, and are about to begin a descent, and Georgia’s program is on the rise.
Steele is the most accurate guy in the business.
Read the June 29 article for yourself, it absolutely crishes Forida, and proves that what Georgia fans think about the program is not only on track, but perhaps the fans don’t even realize JUST HOW GOOD this team and program really is.
Richt’s 4 consecutive top 10 finishes is something Saban or Meyer can’t do.
Richt has a higher winning % than Nick Saban.
Mark Richt is the most UNDERRATED coahc in the country, his teams have finished in the top 10 14 CONSECUTIVE times, and 19 out of 24 of his years coaching.

Florida can say all these things, b/c IT IS TRUE. UGA’s program ISN’T even CLOSE to UF. Each year, its the exact same thing: UGA thinks they are going to win championship, thinking way ahead and are overly confident for their own good. They get 47-10 manhandled by UF. Maybe for once UGA should not be so arrogant and look at reality and learn from their mistakes. Thats the reason they can’t win, they already have it in their mind, their football program is the great, but that was the past, and this is the present. They should WORK HARD and talk less.

I think the hate of Georgia is magnified by the fact that Atlanta is the biggest city within several states and attracts fans from many of those states who need work. Not to mention all the northern folks who move down b/c their states generally suck balls – I know, I’m from one of those states. Then they get angry when the local media covers the Dawgs more than their beloved team and that anger turns into hate.

You are wrong my friend. I have copied and posted from the actual site. You can go with your fellow UGA Y buddies and cry about it elsewhere. Till then, I would work on that pathetic offense and see if you can get past Tennessee’s 34 yard line…or even maybe beat Kentucky! Set your expectations low so you can have a happy season.
PS – I wouldn’t even worry about trying to beat Florida.

Bianchi has become Orlando’s version of Paul Finebaum. He’s looking for page hits and you handed a bunch of them to him. The other day he was ripping on Alabama as the most corrupt program in NCAA history and his argument for that was about as fair and balanced as this one on Georgia.
Unfortunately, using inflammatory rhetoric to generate page hits and comments has become pretty standard across what’s left of the newspaper industry. See Jeff Schultz and Mark Bradley. Reporting, sources, fact checking, context, balance…no time for all that in the internet age I guess.

Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship go up to at least 20:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it. Nor can you ignore the fact that UGA will continue to lose players every year due to arrests and suspensions. People don’t call UGA “ThugU” for no reason.
As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

This guy knows what he is doing. He wants to build the fire so that UGA & FL fans and players can throw gas on it and add to the buildup to the actual game. That’s when the trash talking and sleeze starts between the two schools.
Rankings during the preseason has only to do with selling the popular team {see USC), teams potential, and what have you done for me lately(again , see USC). FL is a media darling now because they have won a lot of games recently, their overly arrogant as h*ll, and they have an egotistical coach that wants the attention on himself also. Bianchi knows it and even the voters know it. UGA has squandered talent and FL hasn’t. That’s the difference over the past twenty years. They are both legimate historical winning teams. One has just got the best of the other during this generation.

They are on a good run in the 90s and 00s, but let’s see if they can continue it over the long haul. Programs like USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, UGA, etc. do it year in and year out. When they are down it’s only for a few years. When Florida was down, they were down for decades.

Yeah…kinda like prior to Spurrier, Vandy’s record against Ga was better than UF against GA. Maybe Bradley could write that tossing aside a couple of fluke chances to play for the title, UF is the worst team in the SEC. I mean really…what is a rematch in ‘96 against a team that beat you but a fluke? Lobbied to play OSU in ‘06 (yes, you were better than OSU, but so was half the country probably) and Bama WOULD have beaten you in ‘08 if the OC doesn’t get wild and call for that deep pass after you finally got your first lead. UF…leading the way in fluke titles since 1996.

Bianchi’s opinion is, of course, his bias. It’s wrong and biased.
But let’s be fair folks– there can be little doubt that UGA’s football program has become a more mediocre commodity in recent years. I just don’t see how that can be denied.
UGA has struggled while Florida and now Alabama have flourished. The on-field performance and off-field problems are an embarrassment. UGA’s overall record (10-win seasons, etc.) look impressive but more importantly, it’s record within the SEC is average.
As a UGA alum and big fan, I really hope CMR will begin to right the ship this season. If he doesn’t, I think his time in Athens will come to an end very quickly– much quicker than you might think.

People on here keep talking about how Georgia is better than the gators..honesty they are not. if you have to refer to something back during segregation and in the mid 20th century then what do you have to say about today? Alabama’s program is waay ahead of both schools so why compaare. Florida Gators are on a different level than UGA..get over it..Georgis is the most overrated team and honestly they aren’t even exciting to watch..LMAO..talk about some real teams in todays sportts and Florida would be mentioned but not UGA..They may have started off number on a couple years ago but everyone knew Georgia wasn’t gonna remain number one..so don’t hate the writer because he made a good point…shows how classy many DAWG fans are..a lie still want help you because it shows how smart the fans are when they try and argue a point with an invalid one..the article still makes sense

Florida has had an amazing run since 1991. However, before 1991, they were irrelevant. They won the SEC in 1984, but had it revoked………other than that, totally irrelevant. Florida fans cannot claim the last 20 years (good) and then ignore the previous 90, 70, 50, or 30 before that (bad). UGA had some good teams under Butts, a few more under Dooley, including the 1980-82 run, and some good teams under Richt. UGA is not as solid a program (over time) as many fans would like to believe, but the most overrated team in college football history is so far-fetched as to be beyond stupidity. .

what a joke… georgia isn’t overrated. i’d say they’re rated pretty fairly as being a great college football program. it is not a top of the line program by any means. top of the line meaning consistently competing for national championships. under richt, georgia has competed for the south eastern conference on a regular basis. florida, however, has been that hurdle that the program has trouble clearing.

He’s only saying what we all are thinking. Sure UF football only really took off in the last twenty years or so, but what have we done in those twenty years. 3 national championships. How many for UGA in that time period? none. Well how long ago since your last one? 30 years. Guess what UGA, since you last got there, the SEC has become the home of the national championship trophy. Prove the world wrong UGA and win one. Otherwise, shut up and be content to win 9-10 games in a league where 11-12 is the standard. Bottom line is, all the UF bias of this writer aside, there is a lot of truth to what he says.

Mike Bianchi is a bombastic flamethrower. He has some points that are valid and some that are downright stupid.
1) Ranking Georgia 64th- Just plain stupid. Dawgs are better than that and any rational, reasonable person knows that.
2) 1980 Belue to Lindsey was a fluke. Yep. It certainly was and will go down as one of the biggest fluke plays in history along with the Stanford-Cal kick return for a td. But what does it matter? It was a legal play and fluke or not it counts. End of story.
3) Bianchi on Mark Richt- Richt is not on the hot seat. True enough. And no offense to the dog fans but if I were Florida I would want Richt to keep his job. Gators pretty much own him. 7-2 with Meyer owning him 4-1 including a few blowouts why on earth would they want Richt fired? Facts are facts and one undeniable fact is that Meyer dominates Richt.
4) Bianchi on whether the UGA tradition is overblown. Yes and no. Georgia is in fact one of the 15 winngest programs alltime in both winning % and overall wins. They are a top 15 program and do have more sec titles than florida even if Florida has dominated the last 20 years. They do own the series head to head also. When speaking of tradition Bianchi would do well to remember that the dawgs have a 100 year tradition of football. Florida has a mere 20 year tradition.
5) The perception that Georgia has underachieved relative to their tradition is also true. The dawgs have a single national title although I really believe they won the 1942 title giving them 2. But what really separates the dawgs from other elite programs in the sec- primarily Fla, Bama, UT, and LSU is the dawg’s willingness to put up with long periods of mediocrity.
Georgia went 20 years without an sec title 1982-2002. That is unheard of to folks in Tuscaloosa, LSU, and Knoxville. 2 sec titles and zero national titles in 28 years would never be tolerated at Bama, UT, or LSU. Especially Alabama where they have a million mini George Steinbrenners. They would fire 5 or 10 coaches till they find the right one to win it all. Idiotic it seems but the point is that they flat out demand excellence.
That is the difference in wanting excellence(UGA fans) and demanding excellence (bama, LSU, or Florida fans). That demand for excellence is the reason why Les Miles is on the hot seat for a 9-4 season and Richt is not after a 8-5 season. It should be noted that Miles had 3 straight 11 win seasons and a national title while Richt as I mentioned just went 8-5 and is a mere 10-10 against the sec east the last 4 years. Everyone gets upset ala Bama-La Monroe. But no excuse for several upset losses such as losing twice to Vandy and losing to Kentucky in 4 years with such an enormous disparity in talent. His domination by Meyer alone is reason enough to be on the hot seat.
Bianchi has some good points and some absurd points. Overall he is just the florida version of the bombthrower Finebaum.

Hillarious. The guy is a well known Gator fan. His analysis is crap.
UGA has 12 Conf Titles, including 2 in last 9 years. UGA has the 3r most in SEC history. 1 behind UT and well behind Bama. Yet well ahead of UF and everyone else in the Conf (including 0 by USCe who has ONE conf title EVEr in 1969 in the ACC).
He is trying to stir up the Dawg fans and get some traffic to his site.
How about the fact that until Texas’s last title they had gone 40+ years between titles, OSU went several decades between titles, and so on.

Bianchi really thinks UGA would be like South Carolina? He clearly hasn’t done his homework. UGA had good teams in the late 60’s and the 70’s, teams that took the Gators to the woodshed on a regular basis. The 1976 Team that played in National Title Game did so without Herschel Walker. And the Lindsey Scott play was not a fluke play, it was just well executed. Now the David Pollack INT vs. USC in 2002: THAT was a fluke play! UGA also had a nice little run in 2002-2005. Were ALL of those games flukes? Of course not! And I can’t seem to remember UGA ever having an 0-11 season like USC did in 1999. I realize this guy doesn’t respect UGA, and after the way the Dawgs have face planted against the Gators the last 2 seasons I don’t blame him. But to say UGA would be a perennial 5-6 win team without Herschel Walker, like USC has been through their entire history; just isn’t accurate.

Florida likes to play the mind game. They try and put doubt into UGA players heads. Last year it worked to perfection. UGA was beaten before they even started the game. You could tell during the 1st quarter that UGA was intimidated and had doubts as to whether they deserved to be on the field with Florida. The coaches acted the same way. Georgia needs to do two things to change the FLA. outcome 1st , they need to get mentally tough and 2nd they need to get the hell out of Jacksonville.

I’m not sure Georgia is overrated, but there can be no question that historically they underperform (as had Florida before Spurrier…what was it Coach Bryant said? “If they ever get anyone who can coach down there we’re ALL in trouble”). The infrastructure for high school football talent in this state, while not as lush as California, Texas, or Florida, is at least as strong as those in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Georgia should do better than they do, but they either can’t keep their talent at home or they can’t coach up the kids they get.
So what is controversial about this?

The answer to someone like Bianchi is to shut up and go prove it on the field. I’m a Tech fan, and I tell my Tech friends to stop whining about the things UGA people say about us or use the academic argument and just prove it on the field. When a team beats you 17 out of 20 times and wins 3 national championships as well, they can say what they want. UGA has been nearly as dominant over Tech (15 out of 20), so they can say what they want as well. Prove it on the field.

As a Tech fan, I do think that UGA Football may be a little overrated in the minds of UGA fans, but I would think even hope that the same could be said about any college program. UGA has a rich history of high quality sports programs in most areas and one of the best Football traditions in the country. Richt is class individual and a quality coach.
I do hate to see all the squabbles between DAWG and Gator fans. After all, if weren’t for Gator fans, DAWG fans would be the most obnoxious fans in the country. (You didn’t think I could go too long without some kind of dig at you guys.)

Should UGA have won more SEC and national titles given its talent base and fan support? Yes. Does this make it a “mediocre” program? No. We’re just not quite as good historically as we could be. I have confidence that more championships will be earned, and, when they are, it’ll be done the Georgia way, but I certainly hope none of our sports writing supporters embarrass us as Bianchi has UF. And I certainly hope we never grasp so desperately that we’re embarrassed by near death experiences (see UA–and USC) or wild coaching gambles (see UT–and USC again!). Last comment: I can’t help but compare the “Richt must go” contingent of UGA “fans” to the “Bobby Cox must go” contingent of Braves “fans” who were spouting off on message boards the last few years and are gone now. Funny how success shuts up the fair weather fans!

I agree about the mentally tough part. I really don’t understand what in the world our coaching staff has been doing in terms of getting this team ready to play Florida. They had a bye week prior to last years’s game, and then I see them come out of the tunnel in those horrible black pants and helments. I knew the second I saw those uniforms that we were going to get killed! What a absolutely pathetic display! How clueless can you be?
Gimmics only work when the team is on a roll.Gimmics are like chocolate icing: on a well baked cake its excellent, but in and of itself it’s not that great. In 2007 the Dawgs had a bye week and they took advantage of it. Regardless of the endzone celebration, Florida had absolutely zero answer for our running game. UGA didn’t win in 2007 because of an endzone dance, they won because they were better prepared and made fewer mistakes than Florida. THAT is what wins games, not the gimmics.
If UGA goes into the Florida game with the same mentality/game plan they have had against Ga. Tech or Auburn this past season( which is a power I running game mixed in with play action passing + generate turnovers on defense),AND STICK TO THAT GAMEPLAN; then they can beat the Gators . I really and truely believe that! They might not could beat the Gators every year, but certainly every other year. If teams like Auburn and Ole Miss can have success against Florida, so can UGA. The Dawgs just can’t allow Florida to get into their heads.

The difference in Georgia fans and Florida fans is that if Florida has a couple of bad seasons half their bandwagon fans will be buying FSU and UM shirts and hats.
When Georgia has a couple of less than great seasons us dyed-in-the-wool DAWG fans grumble and fight like brothers but we don’t go out and buy GT shirts and hats. (Last time I saw a GT shirt in Wally World it had dried snot and a big booger on it.)
We’ll see how we do against the Lizards this year. They’ll be without their best QB and RB (Tebow) and an NFL defensive roster. * Caution: Gators have recruited really well, especially on the defense the last couple years, so they are NOT going to slide anytime soon.
Florida is NOT a southern state and never truly has been. The Seminoles were run out by the Spaniards, who nobody can seem to run off (La Cucaracha, La Cucaracha!). Then after the War of Northern Aggression the Yankee’s took over and invited all their old relatives to move down.
Besides, they voted for Obama! So, there’s that.

Yes, Florida has owned Georgia, 17 out of 20, beatdowns the past two seasons, etc.
Still…
1932-1990 without even a co-championship in the conference. That’s a stain on a program that 19 years of glory can erase. That really sucks. And during that entire period there were no conference championship games and just tying for the best record in the conference was good enough to lay claim to a share of the title.
You can’t discuss Florida football without recognizing that horrendous legacy of futility. Georgia won conference championships in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 2000s. That’s called tradition.
No wonder UF fans pretend that the game was invented in 1990.

Florida has been a on big three out of four year run. But to throw Richt under the bus, that’s a different horse with a 90-27 coaching record. It is strange that every SEC Dean has drawn this type of fire.
Simple fact is is Cox was not that hot of a qb last season, but had the most maturity. Lot of teams outside the SEC would be thrilled with 9-5.

In regards to Bianchi’s assessment on our “delusional fan base”, he needs to understand that there are basically 3 different types of fans. And this true for every college team.
1. Homers: These are the type of fans that think their team is going to be awesome every year. These are the folks that think every recruiting class is going to be amazing. These people are passionate, but they don’t always live in the relm of reality. You can’t have an objective and logical conversation with these kind of fans because they are emotional creatures. Their purpose isn’t to think: its to cheer on the team. You can’t expect an objective analysis from this type of fan. Bill King falls into this category.
2. Bandwagon Fan: These are the kind of fans that only follow programs that have National significance. And when a program becomes Nationally irrelevant, they move onto another team. These kind of fans are able to see the good in a program, but when things start to turn sour, they see the writing on the wall and move onto another team. When a program starts to lose a good number of these type of fans, you can tell that the program is beginning to become irrelavent.Bandwagon fans also tend to have a good read on how other teams are performing nationally, so they can be pretty objective because they have no stake in any one team. A lot of gamblers tend to be this type of fan.
3. Loyal Supporter:These are the type of fans that cheer on the team when things are good but aren’t afraid to critize when things are bad. Oftentimes, they actually attended the unversity they are cheering for, which isn’t always the case with Homers. They are not as wishy washy as a bandwagon fan, but they will quit supporting the team if said team doesn’t get their act together. I feel most college football fans, including myself; fall into this category.

I could point out that UF’s MNC in 1996 was a fluke since ASU, which was #1, had it locked until the last minute of the Rose Bowl when OSU scored a TD and upset them. ASU was still the best team of 1996 as they took down two-time defending national Champion, Nebraska.
Nevetheless, I like the statement, “the most overrated program in college football history”.

Speaking as a Gator fan, Bianchi is just as likely to crap all over UF as he is Georgia. (And he’s a FL grad) Believe me, most Florida fans think he’s a total idiot. As for overrated. I don’t think UGA is even close to being overrated. Underachieving may be a better term, but I stil think they are a perennial top 15/10 program. Who knows, they might win it all this year with a few breaks….

Anyone recall how in elementary school, the nerd kid ( me ) would pull the pretty girl’s blonde hair and make fun of her? This sports writer is just trying to get some attention. Let em rip up UGA. Who cares? His selling papers folks. NO ONE buys papers anymore. He is in big T career wise.
Frankly, as a UGA man, I say put it all out on the field ………..then go at it. We win ……..great for one year, they win …………great for another year. It is only a game.
I am 61 and believe me with all of my U of F Orlando cousins and Winter Park cousins and Sarasota cousins ………..they know that while we were all in school, in the late 60s and early 70s,80s, the rivalry was pretty even. Hell, my own Dad was a Gator and he knew what I am saying.
You gauge a program not over 20 years or 25 but over the long haul. Why is N Dame still viewed as a school capable of winning it all? Their history is why. TRADITION is why.
Ohio State and TX and Oklahoma and Florida all have very good records of late and all but FLORIDA have won forever. U of F? The last 20 years they have been outstanding. UGA has been fair to very decent BUT is the ONLY school to win 8 or more games over the last 13 years. Richt is the third winningest coach with10 or more years, at like .737.
Folks ………if UGA is so horrible, why is UGA alone in this 8 or more win category??? 90+ other NCAA schools would love to enjoy that record. That record has made UGA one RICH PROGRAM and MONEY TALKS and poms poms walk. MONEY IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT AND UGA IS FLUSH WITH IT,BABY.
Florida is a Johnny Come Lately on the historical NCAA football scene. If you are 35, yes, they are it. If you are my age, well, you know that they are a recent pehomenon. Ask my Florida grad cousins. My Florida grad cousins will be honest ……….. they know what I am saying is true.

I did some research. Florida failed to win a conference title during the 20 years before you were born, the year you were born, and the 38 years after that.
When Bianci compared GEORGIA (rather than Florida) to South Carolina, did he do so with a straight face?
For Florida fans, this is not 2010. This is the year 20 A.S., as in “After Spurrier”, the football messiah. Everything before then was the Stone Age. Charley Pell? Doug Dickey? Major probation (twice)? Gut-wrenching-conference-title-denying-losses? Surely you jest, silly Georgia fans.

Bianchi sounds much more reasonable than any of your blogs. He is right on. Uga fans think way too highly of themselves….. every year. I’m not talking just about school pride. I’m saying that you guys really do think from the bottom of your soul that each and every year (preseason of course) that you actually can win the national championship game.
And yet, each and every year you cannot even win your own little division. Even this year, with a totally new QB and a totally new defensive scheme, you guys really do think you can win it all. Granted, your schedule is very cupcake like, but still….
Uga fans love to speak badly of Florida, Alabama, GA Tech, etc. However, not one of you will take off your rose colored glasses and look at your own selves. The Athens program is full of drunks, law breakers, disrespectful thugs that have no reason to be accepted to any institution of higher learning. They are lead by folks that couldn’t care less as long as the idiot fan base continues to donate money.

You are correct that UF does not have a “long” history of winning football. That being said, UF has been one of the top 5 programs in the nation over the past 20 years. Their “tradition” is being written as we speak. Do you really think that a school with over 40,000 students in a populous state like Florida with all of their resources and built-in recruting advantages will ever fall back into obscurity again? I don’t. UF may not compete for the NC every year, but you and I both know that they will most likely NEVER be the doormat that they were in the past. Get used to it…..UF is here to stay!

Coach Smith,
I’d hardly call that 7 year stretch irrelevant. I’m not on here calling UGA irrelevant or overrated. I think Mike Bianchi is an idiot. Any UF fans on here saying anything like that are either too young to know any better or are just being foolish. I grew up watching UGA beat UF almost every year. I’m from Jax and remember our mantra was “wait till next year”. Dooley had our number and we all knew it.
My point to you is that UF is here to stay. They have too large a fan base with deep pockets and too many built in advantages to fall back into the obscurity that they suffered for so many years. They may have some down years, as all programs do. But I really doubt you’ll ever see them be the cellar dwellers that they were in the 60’s, 70’s and part of the 80’s.

Georgia has won more Conference Championships than Florida
Georgia has had more all americans than Florida
Georgia has sent more players to the pros than Florida
Georgia has more SEC wins than Florida
GEORGIA HAS A WINNING RECORD AGAINST FLORIDA by a comfortable margin.
Georgia has actually gone undefeated, a few times. Florida has NEVER gone undefeated. Um yeah……lots of elite teams have not a single season in their entire history where they were not defeated by somebody.
And btw………….their is no national championship in college football. Georgia has NEVER won one and neither has Florida because the NCAA neither awards nor recognizes them. That’s why is “claimed” either by way of a poll or some contrived BCS crap. But the NCAA has never awarded UGA or UF a title.
This is a poorly researched article at best, but I would expect that from Bianci

Lol…you guys honestly think you will beat UF this year? What the hell has your absurdly homer fan base been smoking? Georgia won one title on a fluke, and one by outright betraying our country. 1942 was while Georgia was the ONLY SEC team and one of only five teams in the nation to field an entire team as well as returning starters. Want to know why UF lost by 77 that year? Because UF had kids from off the sidewalk playing who weren’t allowed in the draft.
1942 Georgia out decided to find loopholes and keep their players. Be so proud of that trophy Georgia fans.
Your team has sucked for 30 plus years and counting. You are NOT better then UF now, you are not CLOSE to UF now. We have a better coach, better program, better recruiting pipelines, better at producing draft picks, better at getting assistants jobs, better at winning titles, and better at just about everything.
Bulldog fans are more annoying then any other fan base with this false sense of entitlement. You are not a good team, you are not a national power. Your biggest win in the last 10 years was over Hawaii…congratulations on that big achievement.

Well said Facts & Crap, but good luck getting anyone to listen, including Georgia fans. Maybe one day the president of the NCAA will announce that there isn’t, and never has been, a major college football national champion. Any “title” that requires the vote of the likes of Bianci or having a team ranked ahead of you lose in an upset on the last week of the season because their quarterback got hurt in the first quarter cannot be considered a legitimate championship.
By all objective measures, Georgia has been a better overall program than Florida through the decades. That’s simply not open to reasonable debate because winning percentage, SEC titles, head-to-head wins, etc. are hard stats that don’t lie.
That’s how it stands in 2010. If Georgia doesn’t turn things around in this series soon, then it might be a different story in, say, 2025. By that time Florida might actually have the alltime series win advantage and more SEC championships. Until then, mouthpieces like Bianci can talk all the trash they want, but they just sound stupid.

So I walked over and asked “What time is your flight to Tampa? And are you driving from there to Gainesville, or is your brother driving down to pick you up in the truck?”

I have to agree with the Orlando Sentinel. How many SEC teams have more national championships than UGA? Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee. UGA has the same number as Kentucky and Ole Miss. Hell GaTech has more championships as a member of the SEC than UGA does.

Ok, Ok, a fluke play didn’t beat Florida in 1980, but it was an IMPROABLE PLAY! Florida had the unbeaten and #2 ranked UGA bulldogs beaten 21-20 with less than 2 minutes left and had Georgia in a 3rd and long on it’s own 8 yard line. The QB is running for his life in the end zone and nearly sacked for a safety when he throws a 17 yard pass to Scott.
Now please tell me just how often does a 17-yard pass on 3rd and long from your own
8-yard line result in a winning TD. I’m taking nothing away from a stunning win for UGA,
but please don’t tell me that’s the way ole Vince drew it up. Also, I understand that’s why we play 60 minutes and not 58. (on a side note that’s what Urban was teaching Richt in 2008)
The bottom line is the Gators had Georgia’s BEST TEAM EVER beaten for 58 minutes and lost on a most improbable play. How has Georgia done against Florida ’s National

Well to be fair I can understand what the author is saying…UGA fans are notorious for acting like their program is the best when quite frankly the results on the field say otherwise. UGA fans talk trash like USC, Ohio State, and Nebraska fans but they have one (1942 was during WWII it should not count) national title in 100 plus years of organized football. USC has over 10, Ohio State has 7 or so, and Nebraska has 5…I mean all these programs are elite programs with massive amounts of tradition. Why do UGA fans think they can compare? They typically only win the SEC in down years…other programs such as Alabama and UF win the national title in addition to the SEC crown…until UGA does that they cant talk smack like the big boys…and if they do people will remind them of the facts. I am in no way insulting UGA but the facts dont support the arrogance that many see from UGA fans…winning could change that though. Until UGA wins big again…not just a conference title…they will face this criticism…it is what it is. In this state we act like UGA is very important in college football but the rest of the country does not share that opinion…after growing up in this state I thought UGA was a power house but once I traveled and actually studied the history of college football the truth became apparent…UGA has always underachieved and has never deserved to be in the same breath with the “powerhouse” programs. Don’t get me wrong they have had some success but never to the level of the top programs…in this case the truth hurts.

Coach Smith,
Your math could be a little better. Florida had 5 down years from the Zook to the Meyer era. Not 7. The gators won the sec in 2000, went 5 years without, then won it again in 2006.
Your statement that Florida will go through down periods just like anyone else is true. All programs will go through down periods. Texas, USC, Ohio State, and OU were programs that have been on top in the 2000s but in from the late 80s throughout the 90s those programs were dormant. My Bama team was dormant from 2000-2007 with exception of a couple great years in 02 and 05.
Only difference is that Florida with all its talent and resources will no longer stay down for long. Just a fact of life nowadays unless they get a series of bad coaches in the same way that Bama did between Gene Stallings and Nick Saban.

You guys know that even the Orlando locals refer to the Sentinel as the Slantinel, right? That being said, Bianchi has been writing columns like this for years in what I think is an attempt to get himself on ESPN(in a Jay Mariotti type of role). And really, this column is no different than Stewart Mandel referring to Uga as a wannabe elite program a year or two ago. It is basically the same argument. I would argue that LSU is a program that due to recent success has a really inflated sense of self and the media doesn’t help. I mean, what did LSU do before Saban came to town? Not much considering how old the program is. Bianchi went for the shocking when he compared Uga to South Cackalacka. Besides that, he didn’t really say anything too novel.
Also, note that Bianchi did not make the team rankings that had Uga at 64, that was Andrea Adelson. I’m convinced that she is on par with Heather Dinich when it comes to knowledge of college football. She enjoys it, but has no understanding of what makes teams good. But, like Dinich, she’s pretty easy on the eyes.
Full disclosure: I am a Tech alum and fan, but I grew up during the golden age of Florida(the state…the 90’s) football.
My feeling on the topic is that Uga fans do have an inflated sense of football history. Most overrated? I’m not on board with that. I think there are plenty of other schools that feel that they are more important than they are. LSU is one, and UCLA is another one that comes to mind. Most of the over-inflated egos are in the SEC and Big 10 because of the lengthy histories of many of the programs. Case in point: Michigan State claims 6 national championships(consensus or part of), including a year in which they lost the Rose Bowl. And these championships all came within a 15 year period. So really besides this period, Michigan State has been mostly irrelevant to the National scene.
My point is that Georgia is probably not the most overrated football program ever. The last decade has been amazing for Uga, and Uga has a long history before that with ups and downs like any program.
I am drunk, so bear with me….
Bill King’s column is presented as a fan column, but he has made clear that he was/is a professional journalist. I do think this is somewhat disingenuous. He’s a pro who tries to write as an average fan, but he comes off as a pro due to the prodigious amount of posts he makes. Point being that anything Mr. King writes should not be taken as a man-on-the-street sort of take. Which means he is in the same business as Bianchi in Orlando.
Conclusion: Georgia fans do have an inflated sense of self in the history of college football, but I doubt it’s the worst. And when it comes to overrated programs, there are many contenders and Uga is not at the top of the list. Hell, South Carolina is definitely higher on the list. Yeah, they have a huge stadium, but what has South Carolina ever done? I never even realized they were a D-1A program until the really late 90s, and that would put me in my late teens. Georgia has done infinitely more than South Carolina historically.

Butts,
Nice article
LSU has Won 2 National Championships in the last 7 years.
UGA has Won 0 National Championships in the last 30 years
and, counting.
10-win seasons in 14-game seasons means 10-3.
3rd in SEC East
4th in SEC
5th best SEC Coach at current school vs ranked teams according to ESPN Chris Low last week.
We were not Elite Football program when ESPN pointed it out.
Since that article, we have gone 38-14 the last 4 years, # 19 in the nation in won / loss record over the last 4 years.
We lost to a 4-win Vandie team who accumulated 4 wins including vs us
We are 1-3 vs 4 really sorry vols teams the last 4 years
We are 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years and 2-7 Coach Richt Era
We have lost to 5 SEC East teams who even with their win over UGA, still were not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, just the last 4 years.
There is Top 25 (Final AP Poll Coach Richt 17-19)
There is Top 10 (Final AP Poll Coach Richt 3-8)
Then, there is something better than
Top 25
better than
Top 10
Elite
We are NOT Elite.
Get over it.
South Carolina isn’t any good Butts ? Shocking to compare us to South Carolina ?
The difference in South Carolina and Georgia is that Georgia beats South Carolina.
Other than that, South Carolina and Georgia haven’t been very good over the last 4 years.
Certainly not Elite, either of us.
In the Entire Coach Richt 9-Year Era, we have had no win in any bowl game over any Top 10 Final AP Poll team.
Don’t get on the National Stage when you don’t beat a Top 10 at least Final AP Poll team in ANY damn bowl game in 9 years of Coach Richt Era.
Yes, we backed into a National Stage twice, 2002 when we beat # 24 Final AP Poll 5-loss FSU and 2007 when we beat # 19 Final AP Poll Hawaii.
The Golden Age of Florida was NOT the 1990’s; that is when football began, according to you Butts. Florida with Bob Stoops, won the NC in 1996.
The Golden Age of Florida is NOW. Florida has Won 2 of the last 4 NC. Between LSU and Florida, they alone have Won 4 of the last 7 National Championships.
THAT IS ELITE.
ALABAMA has gone undefeated the last 2 regular seasons and between Florida and Alabama, not only have they won 3 of the last 4 National Championships, but also between Florida and Alabama, they have lost a combined 1 game the last 2 regular seasons.
THAT’S ELITE.
UGA is most assuredly NOT IN THAT CLASS.
Texas is there, ELITE.
Southern California was there, ELITE.
Oklahoma is ELITE. A LOT MORE Elite than UGA.
Even Ohio State is MORE ELITE than UGA.
Even though we slaughtered them with DJ 6 TD himself against them, Boise State has been MORE ELITE than we have been.
We are just NOT Elite.
Georgia Bulldogs have not been better than Top 25, better than Top 10, into this category of Elite.
Elite is Elite.
Sure, Oklahoma won a NC
Ohio State won a NC in the Coach Richt Era.
Southern California had to vacate 1 to I guess Auburn now.
LSU has 2 NC in Coach Richt Era.
Florida has 2 NC in Coach Richt Era.
Alabama has NC in Coach Richt Era.
Where are we ?
47 arrests / suspensions over the last 3 years 5 months.
Oh, and # 19 in won / lost record at 38-14 over last 4 yrs
10-win seasons is not the goal, that is not important, not Elite.
12-2 would be Elite.
Being better than South Carolina does not make Georgia Bulldogs Elite.
We ain’t.
Get over it.

In my time we were 0-6 against UGA until my last year of grad school, and that was the team that Pell built (what??? how many violations????). UGA fans loved it, of course, and rightly so. So why does my finally having some fun mean that I’m suddenly a “classless” fan, or that my coach is a “devil worshipper” who needs his “a-s kicked”, and so on and so on? When the worm turns again you’ll enjoy it like you did before, and I promise not to call you names for it. Why can’t you all do the same?
I’m honored to to share a conference with UGA, Alabama and the rest and I hate seeing how nasty things have become (UF fans included). We’ve let a vocal minority change how we treat each other. The Bianchis of the world fan the flames but they’re just parasites. We’re the ones who read their garbage, and I think we ought to just stop. Just my two cents . . .

The only thing that counts are the “W’s” in the win column. Georgia has been to more different bowl games than ANY other NCAA team and if memory serves correctly we have the 6th best bowl record of all FBS teams. So who cares if Belue’s pass to Scott was a “fluke” we got the “W” that day. Bottomline: No doubt Florida has been one of the top teams since the 1990’s but in our head to head series we still lead them by 7 games and that’s after this so-called 20 years of dominance. The overall numbers don’t lie:
Georgia: 724-384-54
Florida: 653-374-40

The most famous Duke football season came in 1938, when Wallace Wade was head coach and the “Iron Dukes” were born. Wade shocked the college football world by leaving Alabama for Duke in 1930, later rationalizing the move by saying that Duke shared his belief that a school should provide its athletes with a strong academic background. Wade’s success at Alabama (three national championships) translated well to Duke’s program, most notably in 1938, when his “Iron Dukes” went unscored upon the entire regular season. In fact, that Duke team is one of three in college football history to have gone undefeated, unscored upon, and untied in the regular season.
