Today’s Dawgs don’t misbehave more, they just live in a fishbowl

Dontavius Jackson's booking mugshots.

Dontavius Jackson's booking mugshots.

Like me, you’re probably really tired of reading police reports related to college athletics.

Whether it’s serious misbehavior like the brawl in Knoxville or the latest UGA-related DUI charge, or annoying minor infractions involving fireworks, scooters or learner’s permits, it’s gotten exceedingly tiresome.

But let’s not get all sanctimonious and start railing about the good ole days and how these things didn’t happen back … whenever.

It’s always happened. It just didn’t always result in police charges. And even when it did, it rarely resulted in media coverage. Stupid college kids aren’t any more stupid nowadays. They just live in an era when everyone is under a lot more scrutiny than they used to be.

When I was at UGA, I got to know a guy who had been one of the athletic department go-fers back in the 1960s when Vince Dooley picked up his first couple of SEC championships. The tales he told about the off-field shenanigans that some of the star football players got into make today’s transgressions sound like kindergarten stuff.

You just didn’t read about it back then.

But we’re in a different era now, and today’s Bulldogs have to come to terms with that fact. So far this offseason, I think Mark Richt’s response to the seven arrests of varying seriousness has been on the mark. A couple of players have been kicked off the team, as they should have been.

In the latest incident, Richt’s penalties so far (pending further investigation) are exactly what I expected, with Tavarres King suspended for a minimum of one game for underage possession of alcohol and Dontavius Jackson suspended for six games for his wayward journey through campus under the influence. One more misstep by Jackson and it’ll be time for him to join Zach Mettenberger and Montez Robinson.

And if, like me, you were wondering why Branden Smith, Jackson’s teammate who was in the car but had not been drinking, wasn’t behind the wheel as the designated driver, well, he got served with a license suspension notice.

Which bring us back to that continuing, embarrassing problem the Bulldogs seem to have with driver’s permits. Here’s a suggestion: When the team checks in for preseason practice, require everyone on the team to present a valid driver’s license (not a learner’s permit) before issuing their playing equipment.

No license, no helmet.

That might get the message across, don’t you think?

That would be a great first step. However, some may not have driver’s licenses due to earlier transgressions before coming to school at Georgia. That would have to be figured out.

Excellent point. The UGA Police force was a bunch of Barney Fifes when I was up there and I am sure they are more gung ho than ever. The attention heaped on recruits and players makes them targets and trophys for the cops. Stricter enforcement is a factor in this issue of athletes getting in trouble.

The 1980 team that won the SEC and National Championship had their share of trouble the summer before the 1980 season. Those guys stole a pig from the UGA college of agriculture and had nice Bar B Q. Dooley had them work for the University through the summer to pay off the pig. Those guys bonded together and went on a great run winning the NC. Today, those guys would be arrested, their pictures and arrest reports plastered across the AJC and TV. PETA would have huge protest, the media would be up in arms and law enforcement would make a big deal out of it. Yes times have changed.

Somebody suggested to have the whole team punished if one teammate misbehaves(early morning running), I totally agree on that idea.

Doesn’t UGA assign player assistants? assistants should be punished too if their players misbehave.

Post rules-punishments on players’ dorms, training sites. Everywhere.

Valid point Bill but it doesn’t make anything right. The license issue is such an easy fix…just dont understand why these kids cant make it to the DDS. I dont know about you guys but I haven’t had a learners permit since I was 15….it was just something I couldn’t wait to do….you know get my real license. It seem like they got the priorities mixed up…I am a Tech fan btw…and I truly think its sad to see these kids lose a free college education. I hope they can get back on track….and mind is truly a terrible thing to waste.

Back in “the day”, we didn’t have Twitter, Facebook, blogs like this one or even the Internet. We are living in a instant-information era, that has people foaming at the mouth to know what’s happening thus very second.

Also, it doesn’t help UGA to have COMPLETE MORONS like Mark Bradley at the AJC who gets a hard on whenever any negative light is shown on Athens, and makes each incident into 5 or 6 damning headlines.

Why did the Tech DE, or whatever he was, not get the same damning coverage after he beat the crap out of his girlfriend a few weeks ago??

It’s clear that when you are THE elite program in the state, you will have as many envious haters as we do loyal fans and alum.

When a player messes up, have the entire team run sone absolute gruling, puke inducing sprints at say, 5:00am. BUT, don’t make the player who got in trouble run the sprints. This will be much more embarrasing for the kid to watch his team pay fir his mistake. good piece, bill, and i largely agree. i just wonder why OUR kids get into more trouble than the kids at other schools. they live in fishbowls, too. i’ve heard conjectures about athens cops and so on, but who really knows?

it does seem like an inordinate number of our problems are transit-related: scooters, suspended licenses, etc….those are things we should be able to figure out and get cleaned up. one way is to punish the whole team when someone gets arrested; dooley is considering just that at UT after that brawl; CMR should consider it, too.

I don’t think most of these full scholarship athletes realize how much money it cost to send them to school. Not to mention they get all the free tutoring they want. My son lost his Hope after his 1st year at UGA because he didn’t have the maturity to set priority’s or realize you have to study at UGA and his 4 years cost approx.$40,000. He had 3 room mates. So each full scholarship at UGA is worth north of $40,000 not to mention the respect that you will receive at company’s doing business in Georgia. It always amazed me at job interviews how much my degree from UGA meant to people in Georgia which helped me have a very good job. So these kids who are getting a free ride and get into a lot of trouble need to grow up and realize what they have and show some respect to a great school.

You’re right 41 points…if only we could have a disciplinarian like Urban Meyer running our team…we could have players shooting off assault rifles in the dorms and not even miss a game.

As to the fishbowl thing, I haven’t been young and out in Athens for a number of years but it sure seems like the Athens cops have a hardon for football players. You’d think that in most college towns the local cops would bend over backwards to help the sports teams but in Athens it seems like they try their best to bust them for any little thing.

And btw Techies, I don’t consider a DUI any little thing, I’m talking about the stupid coming out of an alley the wrong way on a scooter BS.

Things are NO different here than anywhere else and no different than the 50-60-70’s the only difference between now and then is the Tan Level of the people involved,
The trouble they are getting into is a problem to lable them THUGS is both racist and coawardly on our part. Especially when things alot worse go on every nite on Fraternity/Sorority row on a nightly basis.
To date there have been TWO thugs on this team. One White One Black. Mett and Robinson. Other than that these are typical college kids.

Scott

I agree with For the Record…if drinking underage and even driving after you’ve had a few beers in college makes one a thug, then I’d venture to say that 90 percent of all people in the country are “thugs”. If you went to college somewhere other than Tech, chances are you drank before you were 21, and there’s a better than 50/50 chance that you drove after you’d been drinking at some point…just because someone is a football player doesn’t mean that many of the regular student body don’t do the same or worse crap on a regular basis.

Scott

As far as getting rid of these problems, it does seem that MR needs to basically tell these guys that they have a big Athens PD target on their backs at all times. To someone that’s read the police reports, weren’t there other non football players in the car in this particular incident that didn’t even get written up? I think the headlines say more about the AJC and it’s financial priorities selling papers and advertising, than it does about the UGA football team.

College football players in all conferences from coast to coast in almost every school get arrested every year. Just do the research and you will find players from almost every division 1A school. The media probably doesn’t even bother to print the arrests of players fromdivision 1AA schools.

If you really want to eliminate the college football player arrest problem then petition the NCAA to raise the SAT requirement for a student to participate as a member of a intercollegiate football team to 1200.

That will probably eliminate about 98% of the arrests. The football will suck, but the arrests will end.

The problem Dawg House is that these things occur during the summer, when they are not (by the divine wisdom of the NCAA) under the supervision of the coaches. They can’t make them run steps when one of them gets into trouble unless its a month later, and I don’t think that really an effective deterrent.

Don’t know but it sure seems like the Athens ‘po-lease’ don’t cut these kids much slack. OK, the driving recklessly and the leaving the scene ain’t exactly ‘boys will be boys’, but shoot, they don’t miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to call a coach or somebody to come and get ‘em.

Fact is, there ain’t a single kid that has attended a University of Anywhere – possible exception of Bob Jones – that hasn’t been guilty of underage drinking, and I’m including Saint Tebow. Hell, Ray Goff’s primary job while at Georgia was to make sure Matt Robinson stayed out of bar fights and got back to the dorm in one piece.

At the same time, this was just about as stupid a deal – particularly in the timing of it – as is possible, but at least it wasn’t ‘armed robbery’ and/or ganging up on a guy and beating and kicking him senseless.

I understand underage drinking, I did a crap load of it myself. I dont fault them for that. But clearly not an excuse for drinking and driving. And when you represent your school, you have to follow the rules. It could be worse. If they were at BYU, they could not kiss a coed. And forget a Lonesome Dove kind of Poke. No estimates of how many ‘illegals’ there are in this country set the number any higher than 15 million…plus nobody’s planning on giving them the ‘right to vote’ until they – if ever – become citizens, which would take a decade or so at least…and the reason you come up with some sort of ‘guest worker’ program to deal with ever how many are here is so they can be ‘legally’ taxed in order to contribute to any health, education and/or food that they may consume. Branden Smith. So what happens to Branden Smith. He is in the Chevrolet Avalanche where there were a grand total of 12 charges against the 7 in the car. Branden Smith had his driver’s license suspended because of all the 7 in the car, only Branden Smith could have purchased the alcohol. This is because Branden Smith had 21 year old plus 8 more months past the legal age Vance Ervin Cuff Driver’s License on his person. Branden Smith is part of this TROUBLED 2009 Recruiting Class of Coach Richt.

Branden Smith SERVED WITH A DRIVER’S LICENSE SUSPENSION at the scene because he had 21 years 8 months old VANCE ERVIN CUFF’s Driver’s License on his person.

12-2

July 14th, 2010
5:07 am

VANCE ERVIN CUFF essentially PURCHASED the alcohol for the 7, 6 of whom were arrested at the scene for underage drinking.

Branden Smith actually purchased the alcohol, and he used VANCE ERVIN CUFF’s Driver’s License to do so.

Dontavius Jackson was driving because TAVARRES KING asked him to drive TAVARRES KING’S Chevrolet Avalanche. It is Tavarres King’s vehicle. Duped and conned into driving by Tavarres King, who is obviously SMARTER than Dontavius Jackson.

Whatever suspension from football games therefore Dontavius Jackson receives from Coach Richt, ALSO MUST APPLY to TAVARRES KING.

And, we have NOT heard the last of this Branden Smith and NOT heard the last of this VANCE ERVIN CUFF.

CUFF is a senior and he provided his license to Branden Smith, which caused ALL THESE ARRESTS and suspended license notices.

The arrests are what they are. Incredibly embarassing to the players and their familes, but as a UGA alum I don’t feel like it has a single solitary freaking thing to do with me. That’s what I have a problem with. I have a problem with condescending AJC columns that tell us all how embarassed we should or should not be by all of this. I have never met a single solitary player on the current roster of UGA football. I was not the one that drove drunk or touched a girl when she didn’t want me to or jay walked or whatever the hell these guys are getting in trouble for. I didn’t do any of those things. I just cheer for UGA football and want them to win on Saturdays. And because of that I’m supposed to be embarassed by all of this? Laughable. These are grown men responsible for their own actions, which is another subject all together. I always cringe whenever I hear these guys referred to as “kids.” I think this coddling is part of the problem. Kids will be kids, right? Well, the law says otherwise. The law says they are adults responsible for their own actions. I sure as hell have no responsibility for it because I put on a red shirt every fall Saturday and cheer for them at a football game, any more than I am responsible for the UGA biology major that gets busted for DUI. The AJC (cough…Bradley…cough…Shultz…) needs to get over itself.

12-2, your venemous hatred of UGA and the poor decision made by the young men who are now in trouble must have you walking around with your chest thrown out and your head held high as you tell yourself that your mean-spirited prejudices have proven true. I really find it insightful how you attribute motives to all the young men involved.

‘Dontavius Jackson was driving because TAVARRES KING asked him to drive TAVARRES KING’S Chevrolet Avalanche. It is Tavarres King’s vehicle. Duped and conned into driving by Tavarres King, who is obviously SMARTER than Dontavius Jackson’

Since Tavarras can’t respond to your attack against him, I will. Although if he could do so face to face, he would be polite and restrained in his response. Tavarras did not dupe anyone or take advantage of anyone. He found himself too intoxicated to drive and asked if someone else could. The problem was that everyone who was willing to drive were all too intoxicated to have the judgement to hire a taxi to get them home.

To attribute nefarious motives or deceitfulness on the part of Tavarras is wrong and slanderous and if you were mature enough to understand, you would have to be ashamed of your accusations.

Typcially UGA logic. It’s not that the UGA kids are worse than in the past, it’s just they get caught more often! So that makes it OK? Hey Bill, try looking at society as a whole. Many transgressions today are more frequently caught today vs. in prior years. How about trying getting the kids to change their behavior. However, it’s probably they are getting singled out in Athens. It’s the laws fault not the kids fault. Yea, we get it!

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, the UGA Athletic Department is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for your University or your Athletic Department, and that is a fact. Such silly dawgs here. The good General and the Dawg Trainer are just reminding you to know your role and to shut your mouths. Right now, the Vols sit at the grown-ups table. Having dealt with the Knoxville PD in the past, I don’t blame the player one little bit for hiring a lawyer. That lets the KPD know that they just can’t throw out charges and hope one sticks.

And I’ve seen more than a few pipsqueaks imbibe some liquid courage and take on guys a head taller and a 100 lbs heavier. Happens all the time in Athens,or so I’ve heard.

The way to prevent these type of embarrassing situations is to not recruit the type of student athlete that UGA recruits. You can’t make a hound dog point birds.

UGA must have a large fishbowl as down UT and UF. Those 3 programs must have bail bondsmen on retainer. To say it’s just a fishbowl is naive. There are problems at these 3 undisciplined schools.

Today’s Dawgs don’t misbehave more, they just live in a fishbowl – horsefeathers – Part II.
And then our learned blogger regales us with a tale of similar bad behavior (or worse) that occurred during the reign of Saint Vincent but was kept inside the fishbowl. And that makes the bad behavior acceptable? It’s the same old jock-sniffing mindset, in which everything else is secondary to winning football games and getting an ego boost.
UGA is in the top league in this category, matching the exploits of Bobby Bowden and the FSU Criminoles in their heyday. However, living in the fishbowl does contribute to the income of defense attorneys and probation officers in the Athens economy. I hope that they are paid by the UGA Athletic Association and not the taxpayers.

I suspect that about 75% of the bloggers here would LOVE to be at UGA but they are not for any number of reasons. When they write that “UGA has not won a NC since” Adam met Eve, they are nearly correct but that crap shows their true mindset. Sports, sports, sports and NBA and NFL and stuf like that. Kids, kids, thugs, kids, teens and did I say teens/ They are dreaming about the good life like at UGA. Convertibles, chicks, great, interesting classses that lead to great and interesting careers ( another foreign word to these kids ) and where I am now and have been since age 57 ……..retired.

As a senior citizen, now age 61, UGA alum, I know that there is a huge amount of E-N-V-Y that drives the I HATE UGA blogs here. I suspect that true UGA fans and grads ( another foreign word to these teens ) do not bad mouth Florida or Alabama or Aubunr or even UT or LSU like the so called fans of these other fine schools do.

Kids …………….study in HS, work hard, then maybe you too can be a UGA Bulldog. I am and it has been so good to me and I graduated years and years before UGA was rated as it is now. Business world has been good to this humble old Bulldog. Wooof, woof!!!

@King,

Your blogs are so entertaining. You really do live in your own little self-created world just as so many other uga fans.

Today’s uga players are no more in a ‘fish bowl’ than players from any other college. And, these players are no more ‘under a microscope’ than at any time before.

The difference is that players at uga feel that they are so superior that they can break the law and it doesn’t matter…. that the law doesn’t apply to them. Do you really think that news people follow around the players like TLC following Brittany Spears? Get real!

The news get the arrest information from the police AFTER the law has been broken.

And, the police don’t tail each uga player around, either. There aren’t enough police in Atlanta or Athens to tail each play and do their job as well.

You just live in your fantasy land like so many other uga fans. We get a great laugh at your expense with every blog.

Truth I think you live in your own self-created world and just wish you were smart enough to go to UGA or any other college. You don’t see headlines when a regular student gets arrested for a fight or driving offense. With athletes it makes the front page headlines. They are being singled out for their misdeeds. And before you ask, yes I graduated from UGA with a double major and 4.0 and have a darn good job because of my educaiton at UGA. I have been a season ticket holder for 34 years and have loved every minute of it.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

And look at the red panties falling from the sky!
