Today’s Dawgs don’t misbehave more, they just live in a fishbowl

Dontavius Jackson's booking mugshots.

Dontavius Jackson's booking mugshots.

Like me, you’re probably really tired of reading police reports related to college athletics.

Whether it’s serious misbehavior like the brawl in Knoxville or the latest UGA-related DUI charge, or annoying minor infractions involving fireworks, scooters or learner’s permits, it’s gotten exceedingly tiresome.

But let’s not get all sanctimonious and start railing about the good ole days and how these things didn’t happen back … whenever.

It’s always happened. It just didn’t always result in police charges. And even when it did, it rarely resulted in media coverage. Stupid college kids aren’t any more stupid nowadays. They just live in an era when everyone is under a lot more scrutiny than they used to be.

When I was at UGA, I got to know a guy who had been one of the athletic department go-fers back in the 1960s when Vince Dooley picked up his first couple of SEC championships. The tales he told about the off-field shenanigans that some of the star football players got into make today’s transgressions sound like kindergarten stuff.

You just didn’t read about it back then.

But we’re in a different era now, and today’s Bulldogs have to come to terms with that fact. So far this offseason, I think Mark Richt’s response to the seven arrests of varying seriousness has been on the mark. A couple of players have been kicked off the team, as they should have been.

In the latest incident, Richt’s penalties so far (pending further investigation) are exactly what I expected, with Tavarres King suspended for a minimum of one game for underage possession of alcohol and Dontavius Jackson suspended for six games for his wayward journey through campus under the influence. One more misstep by Jackson and it’ll be time for him to join Zach Mettenberger and Montez Robinson.

And if, like me, you were wondering why Branden Smith, Jackson’s teammate who was in the car but had not been drinking, wasn’t behind the wheel as the designated driver, well, he got served with a license suspension notice.

Which bring us back to that continuing, embarrassing problem the Bulldogs seem to have with driver’s permits. Here’s a suggestion: When the team checks in for preseason practice, require everyone on the team to present a valid driver’s license (not a learner’s permit) before issuing their playing equipment.

No license, no helmet.

That might get the message across, don’t you think?

dirty, better pull you head out of the sand…..my points were and still are these kids are just following the path society hath laid for them, there is way to much attention being put on the “results of the problems, and not the solution to the problems”….I’m sorry you fall into the same category as KJ. If we want to solve the problems we need to focus our attention on solutions, not complaining about the results.

Adams is in bed with what seems to be every liquor distributor in the state. It looks like an armada on Thursday afternoons with all the beer trucks pulling into Athens. Anyone who thinks Athens is a “college Town” is crazy. It’s more like stinkin Bourbon Street. These college kids are being put at risk because Adams is controlled by Leebern What a state What a University. Where’s the LYSOL!?

“Whether it’s serious misbehavior like the brawl in Knoxville or the latest UGA-related DUI charge”

Bill King, always the apologist for all things Georgia. DUI combined with a hit and run apparently doesn’t fall into the category of serious misbehavior in Mr. King’s world. And there was plenty of bad behavior in the old days too!

Gen Neyland nice for you to share your wisdom on drunk driving, the risks etc. How you feel about 8-9 football players beating a off duty cop half to death. Seem there should be a little wisdom you could share on how to handle that problem going forward. How you feel about sending the culprits caught doing that a severe life lesson ? I mean the DUI could have been terrible as you stated IF there was a accident..how you feel about the assault that DID happen. This whole incident is bad for certain and for sure ..but I’ll be damned if a UT fan is going to get away with lecturing UGA on player behavior problems and how to address them..its like a Bug telling us how to play football… you certainly have balls my man I’ll give you that.

KJ, read your post again from last night….

“Today’s Dawgs don’t misbehave more, they just live in a fishbowl – horsefeathers. And UGA wonders why it isn’t respected?”

There’s this new-fangled thing called “the internet”, you may want to check it out, then get back to us.

And I’m pretty sure there have been roughly 90 times in the last 9 years when UGA commanded plenty of respect from the opposing team, but, thanks for playing!

That made no sense whatsoever, no hardon KJ, just my opinion in general. Sorry if I offended you, I can be the dumba$$….

Scott W – do us all a favor and go to a gator blog. Trolling UGA blogs on a dialy basis only makes you look pathetic. UF has beat UGA 17 of the last 20 years….what more do you want? You better believe if UGA had beat UF that much recently I’d let that record do the talking. Have some class d-bag. It’s not like your Gators havent had their share of arrests. The way to prevent these type of embarrassing situations is to not recruit the type of student athlete that UGA recruits. You can’t make a hound dog point birds.
