Dooley puts it all in perspective

Vince Dooley has the right perspective on Mark Richt. (Georgiadogs.com)

With writers and columnists in the border states determined to try and generate some heat under Mark Richt’s head coach’s seat (despite the fact that nobody who counts in Athens feels that way), Vince Dooley puts it all in perspective.

Dooley, who’s visiting his hometown of Mobile for his 60th high school reunion, talked with the Press-Register there and summed up the UGA situation pretty nicely:

“Once you establish a program at a high level and you win 10 ballgames pretty much every year, when you fall below that you become a victim of your own success a little bit,” Dooley said. “The other thing is that Florida has been on a roll of late. Our record against them is just atrocious the last 10 years.”

But, Dooley noted, while “this has been the first what you might call not-so-good year,” the other side of the coin for UGA is “you beat your rival that won the ACC and you won the bowl game. A lot of people would be celebrating, but not so [at Georgia].”

That’s because Richt set the bar high for himself with his first few seasons in Athens, and college football nowadays is all about what have you done for me lately?

Maybe you disagree with Vince and think there wasn’t any reason for celebration last season for UGA football. But like I’ve said before, anyone who believes 90 wins in nine seasons isn’t good enough should think back to the days before Richt arrived.

I’m confident whoever Georgia hires as the new AD will recognize what a good thing the school has in Richt.

whopperdawg- UGA has beaten FL more than twice in a decade. ONce w/ stafford & Moreno (end xone celebration), & once w/ David Greene. Then the following yr. they almost beat them playing w/ backup Joe Terinshinski…after Shockley got hurt. I hate it that UGA has been dominated by FL for the most part, but FL has had a great team. I know UGA recrutis great players, but FL does too…just saying. I hope we can get to where we beat FL too, but I’ll take our position of where we are now, & our chances now…instead of how it was before.

If Richt is ANYTHING like Bowden, we should all be thanking our lucky stars. Our school needs that rock of leadership, and that should be enough for anybody to think that we are all lucky we have him. SO, with that said, lets GATA and beat Florida, UT, Auburn, Tech, and win another DAMN SEC Championship!

it took ole vince 16 years to win a national championship and he did with the best football player who ever played college football.

mark has been at georgia 9 years and has won two SEC championships, but like all coaches he has made mistakes, who hasn’t.

the biggest mistake was not having a good replacment after van gorder left.

i think we have it now and we should win 9-10 gamess this year setting us up for a great run in 2011-12.

it is about time for saban to get tired at alabama and move on and myers does not have tebow or charley strong to run his defense.
i think we are about to experience in the SEC in the next few years a power shift and uga will be in the mix.

It has gotten so bad for Richt until he has had to get those closest to the program to come out in favor of him. First Damon Evans came out affirming Richt was not on the hotseat before his demise at the Destin conference, also President Adams made a very nebulous comment about Richt that made Adams seem like he wasn’t in touch with the reality of the situation. And now they drag Dooley into the little “mutual admiration society” and even Dooley has to make positive “spin” comments to prop up Richt!
Richt must produce results!

I have NO IDEA what you mean about 2011-2012.

We LOSE 15 SENIORS after this 2010 season and we LOSE 4 or 5 juniors including especially AJ Green. ALL of these are the starters.

You give our coaching staff a pass on THIS 2010 season because THEY have provided you NO EXPERIENCED QUARTERBACK yet again, as we suffered 2001 making a freshman the only QB who played, losing 4 games; as we did in 2006 after DJ Shockley graduated making a freshman the only QB who played all 13 games, losing 4 games; and as we did in 2009 making a as our QB a guy who we never ever played – had plenty of opportunities to get him in games and did NOT, losing 5 games; and now as we are yet again in the 10th year of this Coach Richt Era YET AGAIN having NO QUARTERBACK to play but a freshman the ONLY QB on the ENTIRE ROSTER.

Ok, so you are going to have a QB for 2011 (assuming he is not injured again thi season as he has been BOTH of the previous 2 years) unable to even practice – and SPLITTING TIME this Spring not injured still not getting the needed experience and does NOT know the play book because we Kowtowed to the demands of now a Wide Receiver.

You LOSE way too much off this team 2010 to be great in 2011.

It IS 2010.

THIS IS THE SEASON.

Get off your duff and figure it out; THIS is OUR YEAR.

END B.S.

(1) win 9 to 10 games ? We play ONE (1) RANKED TEAM, # 5 Florida.

(2) It is a 14-game season.

(3) 9 or 10 wins is complete and utter crap nowadays with 14-game seasons.

(4) 9 or 10 wins means we are NOT in The SEC Championship Game for the 5th years in a ROW.

(5) 9 or 10 wins means with a great defense this year, great special teams this year, and 10 returning starters on Offense, that we have had a MISERABLE SEASON 2010.

(6) 9 or 10 wins means at best, we LOSE 3 or 4 games.

(7) 9 or 10 wins means about # 19 in the Final AP Poll.

(8) 9 or 10 wins has meant # 19 won / loss record of 38-14 the last 4 years.

(9) We are the # 11 program All-Time in 1-A wins.

(10) 9 or 10 wins is # 19.

(11) # 19 is NOT where we should be All-Time at # 11.

(12) 9 or 10 wins means 10-3 or 9-4.

(13) 9-4 or 10-3 in a 14-game season.

(14) 9-4 or 10-3 playing SOFT EASY SCHEDULE of only 1 ranked team # 5 Florida.

(15) Vince Dooley says we have to do better against Florida.

(16) Vince Dooley admits Florida is a better program.

(17) Some blithering IDIOT just came in here and said we are BETTER than Florida with MORE WINS and it will STAY THAT WAY. We have LOST to Florida 17 of the games over the last 2 decades.

(18) It will be 18 of the last 21 games after this season.

(19) It will be 19 of the last 22 games after the season after this season when we will have lost 15 seniors going into that year after this season and will have lost 4 or 5 Juniors. These are all our starters.

(20) There is NO WAY you can come in here and say we are BETTER than Florida.

(21) Florida has a QB ready AGAIN this season, as they do every year while we will be facing no QB prepared this season in year 10 of the Coach Richt Era which we have already faced now including this season, 4 of the 10 years – NEARLY HALF the Coach Richt Era (1 short of half the time NOT PREPARED the QB we IN-FACT PLAY.)

(22) We have lost 4 games, 4 games and 5 games in the previous 3 seasons without our QB prepared.

(23) 2011 promises to be a HORRID TEAM, especially in view of the sorry Offensive Recruiting Class we just suffered, especially in this great state for recruiting.

man, you need to catch your breathe. it is apparent you did not play much football.
georgia has finally built significant depth with the o/line to maintain much strength in this very important for years to come.
we lost three great d/lineman that we will need to replace this year, and we are installing a new defensive alignment that will take time to adjust, but we should be better in the second half of the year.

florida, like georgia has a freshman qb with no experience and they lost tebow, many other great players on both sides of the ball.

there are other major loses with their defensive coorinator charlie strong leaving to be head coach st louisville, who might have been the best in the conference.

georgia will be stronger in 2011 with an establish defense in play all year,an experience qb and with very good depth in place as well.

the lemay kid is still in high school and he will be in athens in 2011 so his current problems does not have any impact on uga.

the futue is very bright and dawgs will have a top recruiting class in 2o11 that will augment the depth that we finally now!

July 9th, 2010

The spin monkeys have convinced themselves that this O-line is going to “outperform” because of the experience and number of total starts. This same O-line could not put any points on the board in the first FIVE possesions against Texas A&M in the bowl game. This was after three weeks prep and the surprise performance against Tech. The same offensive line starting players have underperformed against SEC opponents with a production of only 4 ypc! The are again being “highly touted” but again will be “BOGUS” against the SEC.

Bill,

Mark Richt can stay as long as he wants as long as his players continue to fight for him. But I have major concerns about the mental toughness of this program right now that supercedes everything else. I have seen UGA overcome turnovers and a lack of talent in certain positons and still win because the mental toughness was there. But this crap where they mentally implode in the second half of games like they did vs. Kentucky and Georgia Tech is very disturbing. I can handle 5 loss seasons if the team is battling for 4 quarters and is just coming up short. But I don’t appreciate watching my team quit on that field, and if Richt and his coaching staff can’t inspire their players to perform better then he and they need to go. 2010 is make or break for Mark Richt as far as I’m concerned.

DaveDawg96

July 9th, 2010

The people blindly supporting Richt were the same ones blindly supporting Donnan and his 8-win seasons a decade ago.

Listen, if Bama can win the NC with a recruiting home state that has half the population of Georgia AND the split a lot of that talent with Auburn, then UGA should at least compete for a NC every now and then.

This is 2010, and this is how it is. Don’t tell me I should be happy with being a middle of the pack program. This isn’t 1995. Also, I’m sick of hearing of the “glory days” of the early 1980s – that was 30 years ago. It’s time for a new round of glory days. We’ve got the resources (here in 2010, GA is a hotbed of football talent), so all we need is the coaching.

O-Line is Bogus

A Couple things about your assessment of our O-Line.

1. They are a very good run blocking line and are OK at pass blocking. I felt the line gave Cox plenty of time to throw, but Cox had just awful pocket presence. It’s not the O-lines fault when you have a QB that is pitching balls into the dirt and gets happy feet in the pocket.

2. Sometimes you have to give the other team credit. Texas A&M’s DC Joe Kines put together a bunch of blitz packages in that game, sometimes putting 9 guys in the box. Even lousy teams can have good game plans every now and then, but UGA was eventually able to wear them down with their size and talent.

ssiGATOR (the name says it all,) Richie, Habanero, and all other hater, whiner, fussy little thumbsucking pablum pukers who couldn’t coach their way out of a pee wee league game–you guys should be reading the Orlando Sentinel or the Whiners Gazzette and mouthing off there. What a bunch of loser nimrods.

Coach Dooley is, as one would expect, spot on in his statements. The bar has been set this high by CMR. We at UGA have gotten very comfortable in our expectations that we will continue the average of 10+ wins per season. And I continue to have such expectations as well, including for the upcoming season. I do understand that a bad year can happen. I don’t expect that several bad years will line up in a row.

CMR has made positive, needed, changes regarding the coaching staff and he does seem to be bearing down in all aspects of his coaching. I expect improvement in our defense which will help our offense also. If you don’t understand how that works, you should not be mouthing off about Div I (or frankly any level of) football. Go play badminton or ping pong and leave this to the grownups.

While the second year of the new defensive scheme will certainly be better that this year, I do expect a distinct difference to be present when the Dawgs hit the field this fall. I base that expectation on the fact that everywhere CTG has gone he has produced dramatic first year improvement. With the assistance of Coaches Belin and Lakatos my expectations are strengthened. These guys are all of one mind and one attitude–aggressive, hard hitting, in-your-face defense. That is the biggest thing we have been lacking for several years now. Those of you old enough toi remember the Junkyard Dogs should be looking forward to what is coming soon. Big WOOF!

As of now we are in a very healthy state as a team and have all of our starters on Offense back except for QB. And the only thing that worries me about QB is the depth chart. Murray is going to be excellent, (he has good movement and a great arm,) and the coaches have the luxury of the offensive experience to help take care of him as they ease him into his role.

Much has been said about concern with the secondary. I believe CSL will have us covered with great coaching and some Very talented new safties. I for one cannot wait to see Mr. Ogletree and the Hit-Man doing their thing as Bulldogs.

While UT may be weaker, SC, AU, and KY look to be stronger than recent years. SC probably has the best team since the Ole’ ball coach has been there–getting a win at their house may be the toughest game of the year. FL is always tough but I think we will upset them this year. All that said, we still have a better schudule than we have had the last two years.

I DO expect great things–mostly because of the quality and talent of Coach Richt and HIS staff.
