Dooley puts it all in perspective

Vince Dooley has the right perspective on Mark Richt. (Georgiadogs.com)

With writers and columnists in the border states determined to try and generate some heat under Mark Richt’s head coach’s seat (despite the fact that nobody who counts in Athens feels that way), Vince Dooley puts it all in perspective.

Dooley, who’s visiting his hometown of Mobile for his 60th high school reunion, talked with the Press-Register there and summed up the UGA situation pretty nicely:

“Once you establish a program at a high level and you win 10 ballgames pretty much every year, when you fall below that you become a victim of your own success a little bit,” Dooley said. “The other thing is that Florida has been on a roll of late. Our record against them is just atrocious the last 10 years.”

But, Dooley noted, while “this has been the first what you might call not-so-good year,” the other side of the coin for UGA is “you beat your rival that won the ACC and you won the bowl game. A lot of people would be celebrating, but not so [at Georgia].”

That’s because Richt set the bar high for himself with his first few seasons in Athens, and college football nowadays is all about what have you done for me lately?

Maybe you disagree with Vince and think there wasn’t any reason for celebration last season for UGA football. But like I’ve said before, anyone who believes 90 wins in nine seasons isn’t good enough should think back to the days before Richt arrived.

I’m confident whoever Georgia hires as the new AD will recognize what a good thing the school has in Richt.

“Richt’s going on a “consecutive game winning streak” starting this year that people will be talking about for a long, long time, like decades.”

Is he taking over the gymnastics program?

If a guy throws tons of interceptions, you have to sit that guy, his mistakes are killing the team. Same for fumbles, missed coverages, & penalties. Georgia has to “get tough” by using the bench and get the guys OFF THE FIELD who do can’t figure that out. Give them a chance to earn ther spot back by showing they “got it”. But do NOT put up with mistakes.

Rewarding Cox with more starts hurt the team morale and increased the mistake tolerance on the team. Rewarding Murray with #1 place on depth chart after making most mistakes in Spring, hurt team morale. You have to get players who hurt the team off the field, regardless of their past success.

Richie,
I agree. Its like the last few years we’ve been sitting there with talent wasting on the sidelines while confirmed “busts” (aka highly recruited players who continue to show they aren’t gamers) continue to take the snaps.

Richt has to get tough in PRACTICE. You PLAY LIKE YOU PRACTICE. You make a mistake, you’re off the field, you sit. Then you have to EARN your way BACK by working longer and harder than everyone else in drills.

Richt over 60 arrests last 4-Donnan only 3 but Adams said he was concerned about off the field issues with Donnan-plus UGA always in top 5 for least number of penalties and turn over margin 96-2000-big difference is 3-1 vs Tech by Richt

I understand the logic that we should of benched joe cox but really i honestly think we still would of finished with the same record when it was all said and done. You dont want to put murray out there making mistakes and the bulldog nation getting down on him for the next season. Murray will be ready this year i guarantee it

10 wins per season is great HOWEVER he does not get the most out of his players/coaches – penalties….mistakes… discipline…motivation. If he were stron at these he would have at least on NC.

You can average 10 wins per season and never win a championship if you “average” 3 conference losses per season. 3 conference losses = NO CHAMPIONSHIP

Habanero

Coach Mullock Richt is averaging 3 conference losses per season over the last four seasons. You cannot win a championship with an average 3 confercence losses. It does not matter how many games you win or “average” win. The average win thing is an old Bowden scheme.

Da Preacha Man needs to show us that he’s also a Ball Coach. He seems like he thinks he’s a CEO. We don’t need a CEO. We don’t need a STRATCOM or a BRAND. We need championships and bowl rings. We need someone with passion and fire and emotion on the sidelines–a General at the Front leading the Charge! Richt has yet to show us that he has such mettle or intensity.

The real issue is while Dawgs should have benefitted from coaching changes at UF and ALA and LSU-they all won BCS championships starting from scratch while UGA was in the fifth year of Richt regime with 2 SEC championships under his belt and should have continued success while they were down at ALA and UF and change of coaches at LSU-what happened to our team since the 2 SECs as compared to the quick turn arounds at UF and AL?We go 500 or less against 3 of 5 East teams-1-3 vs UT and UF and 2-2 vs UK plus losses to USC and Vandy and home losses to ALA and LSU

I do not live “vicariously” through the Head Coach as you do. He is hawling in $2.8 million per year plus bonuses and endorsements.
I am sick and tired of the same “old lame hype” year after year about a Georgia team that has trended downward. I saw this under Goff and Donnan and now I see again. So I ask the question: Could Will Muschamp or Kirby Smart be any worse?

Sometimes the Truth Hurts

His religious comments were absurd. It was as if he was telling the Dawg Nation, “talk to the lord, the face don’t want to hear it!” S

Speak “God” and talk “jesus” and pocket the money like Bowden.

The 10 win thing is another Bowden scheme, remember?

Sorry guys, I just don’t buy it. I’ve followed Georgia football religiously since the ‘77 Sugar Bowl, and the team just hasn’t looked well-coached since the ‘06 Sugar Bowl, in my opinion.

Even the ‘07 team that got so hot in the second half looked terrible in the first half, without excuse. We were darn lucky to have escaped at Vandy and not have 3 losses going into the Florida game that year. In hindsight, Florida and Auburn were down that year and our Sugar Bowl opponent was Hawaii, so I’m still not convinced that team was as great as we though it was at the time.

True, Florida has been real good in recent years, but if Arkansas can almost beat them in Gainesville and Auburn, LSU and Alabama play them about even, I see no reason for Georgia to get dominated two years in a row. I’m not sure how anyone can excuse the sorry performances the past two years, especially the ‘08 game when the Dawgs seemed to just quit early in the third quarter.

I hope Richt proves me wrong, but it seems to me that something special left the program when Van Gorder went to GSU. Maybe the new staff will bring some of the toughness and resilience back.

I guess the Black Jerseys , the butt kicking from the current National Champs ( Tide) 2 yrs ago has just been too much for the team and coaches to overcome. Let’s get real, with the Gators and Bama fighting for dominance in the SEC, the DOGS may see a national championship in , let’s say, another 27years? Vince, you were the last championship coach the DOGS will have for a long time…

The only thing that counts is being invited to a bowl (any bowl) & winning it. What good does it do to go to a bowl (including the “National Championship”) & loosing…… Would you rather win 10 Independence Bowls in a row or loose the National Championship 10 years running,,,
Good coaches should be judged on the number of bowls they take their teams to & their winning % in those games.

Enough, ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! about whether Mark Richt’s status and well-being at UGA should be questioned!! He is the very best coach we could ever hope of having, one who possesses high, moral and ethical character and how it manages to supercede his wonderful and incredible success on the field at UGA.

All those who feel the need to stir the pot and throw doubt into the wind about him are actually envious AND devious to the point they would love nothing than to have him leave UGA under any circumstance. Ain’t gonna happen!

How is it some of you get off telling folks that they aren’t fans because they critique the UGA coach and program. Hey knuckle heads…if we had not had griped we will still be with Ray Goof. 10 wins a year seems great, but is actually worthless when you are only a whipping boy to an in-conference rival, ie. Florida.
I couldn’t care if they go 6-6 every year…just as long as they don’t lose to the SAME TEAM EVERY FREAKING YEAR!!!!!!!!

Whoa! Somebody pulled stuff from a May 27th post of mine?

Try this: In a perfect world (or completely imperfect?), each SEC school would win a championship every 12 years. In 10 years under CMR Georgia has 2. That’s more than double the rate if all schools were equal, or 1 every 5 years. Who has a championship win rate?

If UT can eventually fire Fulmer, then you can bet UGA can eventually fire Richt. Money and not bloggers’ opinions either for or against Richt will decide. Fulmer got fired because he had about 5 disappointing seasons in consecutive years. The past two have been not what UGA fans seem to want from Richt. A national championship ring could not save Fulmer, and 2 SEC championship rings plus a 2-7 record against FL so far won’t save Richt. Next season with an inexperienced QB may not be so hot, and the year after that the OL will be pretty much gone along with the best wide receiver in college football. Injuries also destroy a lot of seasons. Richt may be around for a long time, but I wouldn’t take it for granted.
