Quick hits: Adams, AD search, Richt and UGA cops

Michael Adams and interim AD Frank Crumley (Phil Skinner / AJC)

Michael Adams and interim AD Frank Crumley (Phil Skinner / AJC)

UGA President Michael Adams raised a few eyebrows Tuesday when he said that while he thinks there are three or four people currently on the athletic association’s staff who would make “very strong” candidates to replace Damon Evans, “my first look in this case is going to be outside.”

I’m not a big fan of Adams generally, but I liked his reasoning here. (And not just because Greg McGarity, my favorite candidate for the athletics director’s job, currently works at the University of Florida, though he has strong ties to UGA.)

Said Adams: “I want an outside opinion to take a hard look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As well as we’re doing it, can we do it better?”

Of course, it’s entirely possible that in the end the very capable search committee appointed by Adams might decide to recommend interim AD Frank Crumley or some other in-house candidate. But I wouldn’t bet on it. This is certainly no knock on Crumley or anyone else currently on the athletic association staff, but fresh blood is generally a good idea. While promoting from within can at times be a sound philosophy, it also can lead to the Ray Goffs and Ron Jirsas of the athletic world.

As Adams said, Georgia’s athletics director is “one of the five or six best” such jobs in the country and “there’s no shortage of interest.” UGA would be foolish not to survey the national landscape.

NUMBERS CRUNCHER?

Speaking of the next AD, David Ching of The Athens Banner-Herald predicts Evans’ successor will have a background from the financial side of athletics administration. I’m not so sure that’s necessary, though.

Yes, the financial bottom line drives college athletics in the ESPN era, but that doesn’t mean your AD has to be a numbers cruncher or contract negotiator. That’s what you have guys like Crumley on staff for. And the athletics director also is the face and voice of your program, so a familiarity with the intricacies of public relations is a must.

I do agree with Ching that the days of putting old coaches into the AD’s spot are mostly past (at least, at forward-thinking schools), and it is a certainty that UGA’s next athletics director will come from the ranks of college sports administrators — likely one with experience at a school with a big athletics budget like Georgia’s.

OBSESSION WITH RICHT

It’s not been particularly surprising that the same folks who keep trying to put Mark Richt on a “hot seat” in terms of job security have been advancing the idea that a change of athletics director at UGA will be bad for Richt or put more pressure on him to succeed.

Hogwash.

Sure, new administrators like to bring in their own hires, but where you’ll mostly see that is in the staff. No new athletics director is going to come into Athens and mess with a guy who’s won 90 games in nine seasons.

In the wake of the Evans debacle, the wholesome image and consistency that Richt represents is extremely important for UGA. And a slightly subpar season — or even two — isn’t going to change that.

As Barrett Sallee of CollegeFootballNews.com put it: “Georgia needs stability, and Mark Richt — a man that is the epitome of stability — is the perfect man to provide it. Now, if the football programs continues to deteriorate for the next couple of years, then yes, maybe it will be time for him to go. But that will have nothing to do with the athletic director and everything to do with the direction of the program.”

Richt is a competitor and he wasn’t happy with an eight-win season. He doesn’t need anyone, including a new boss, to tell him that UGA needs to be regularly in the running for the SEC championship game.

I think Chris Low of ESPN.com was on the mark with this prediction: “Ultimately, I still say there’s a better chance Richt wins an SEC championship in the next two or three years than there is that he loses his job.”

JORDAN LOVE

What to make of the “breakdown of communications,” as the UGA police chief called it, that resulted in football player Jordan Love being arrested for not giving an officer his middle name?

Simple. When a cop asks you for information, give it to him, no matter how silly it might seem. You don’t use your middle name, you’re not sure how to spell it, and you don’t understand why he needs it? Never mind. Just give him a polite answer. Because too many police officers, particularly on the campus force in Athens, seem to have Mayberry’s Deputy Barney Fife as a role model.

GTBABY, you say that UGA has embarrassed themselves off the field. Its much worse to talk about how great you football team is, then get embarrassed week after week in the ACC and in in-state games (rivalry has to be competitive). Also, speaking of embarrassing, why does GT boast colors of gold and navy blue and have a mascot that is yellow and black. are you color blind? Maybe that is just something us “Redneck farmers” (aka your boss) from UGA notice. Speaking of redneck, we don’t drive an old POS onto the field and park it in the grass at our home games. Sound familiar? In short, you are an embarrassment to the state, go back to your nerdery and compute things with your fellow nerds. Maybe you can compute the overall score to the football games over the last decade or two.

It’s easy to say that UGA is “thuga” from an outside prospective, you really don’t understand the dynamics of Athens. As a former student at UGA, you see how Athens-Clarke County handles student athletes…specifically football players. At a University thats student body consists primarily of caucasians, a 6′4″ 250 lb african-american stands out not only to fellow students but also to the ACC police force. Now I’m not saying all officers are guilty of this, but a number of them feel the need to park themselves outside bars or follow these specific individuals around waiting for them to slip up. So call UGA whatever you want, but you need to immerse yourself in the environment before you cast a stone.

If a police officer asks your name, why not just give it to him. Sounds like the “attitude” here was not on the part of the officer. Many of these athletes think they are beyond the rules of mortal man. If you feel the officer is stepping beyond the bounderies of his duty, be cooperative and nice and then get your info and witnesses etc together and file a grievence or take him to court. Years ago I was wrongly affronted by a police officer who was “directing traffic” and clearly having a bad day. I called the police headquarters to state my case and explained the situation and named my witnesses. That evening, I got a call of apology from both the officer and his supervisor. Just handle it the right way……….

Far too much emphasis on football in the search for AD. UGA is a leader in collegiate athletics women’s programs, with championship level basketball and gymnastic programs. It’s about time the selection of an AD reflected the athletic program priorities and diversity; where are the female candidates?

Sounds like UGA needs to get a better handle on the Police Dept. It seems as if they have it out for the football players. All the comments from the GT faithful should be more concerned with their recruiting and that mickey mouse offense. After the DC of the ACC opponents watch the game film from last year, I think Tech will have their own problems to be concerned about. Gators, please don’t act as if all of your players are without fault. UF has their own problems, but the police down their know not to mess with Meyers flunkies. So, if you are not for UGA and only have negative things to say, let the season determine our paths. in other word, shut the f**k up.

Other than an occasional “blackout” the football program at UGA remains the usual 8-4 which is good, not great. Mark R is a very, very good coach, not great. It’s obvious they can’t compete against Tennessee, Alabama or Florida so they will remain middle of the pack in the SEC. BTW, GO GATORS

Huh?

July 7th, 2010
2:30 pm

Hogwash – Not sure Tech is afraid of other DC’s getting game film on the offense because, y’know, they’ve had for about 20 years. And keep on calling it a Micky Mouse offense. Last I checked it’s averaging 35 a game against your vaunted SEC defense.

And if the police have it out for your players (which makes no sense and you have no evidence to support), then perhaps your players shouldn’t give them any reason to arrest them.

PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THE INFERIORITY COMPLEX RIDDEN TECHIES! They just can’t stand that they are irrelevant just like their pathetic little conference(UGA 8-5 and South Carolina 7-6 spanked their two division champs!). Richt who? UGAwhat? Why is a major city newspaper reporting on some small town school 2 hours away that is totally irrelavent?

Maybe the football team should/could at least win their division? Forget about dreaming of winning the conference, just try for the division!

Maybe the basketball team should/could at least get invited to the NCAA? I mean good grief, there were 64 teams invited and ugag couldn’t make it?

Maybe the baseball team should/could at least play well enough to make SOME post season.

My question to the AJC is this: if ugag cannot do any of those things and yet get ALL of this space on the Atlanta newspaper, why doesn’t the AJC also give equal space to GA State and to Kennessaw State and to Morehouse and to …… Those teams have accomplished the same if not more than uga!

The problem is that the players need to understand in place like Athens the ball player do stand out in crowd and everybody knows who they are so they need to remain as low profile as possible. It is a fact that the police do arrest/question other students however the media(bent on sensationalism) doesn’t cover when Bob ,the junior from Peachtree city, Risk Mgmt.major gets arrested downtown, but the AJC and others run with it as soon as they can weh a ball player steps in it. The media is more Jerry Springer than Walter Cronkite.

The answer is that even though these other colleges are within reaches of Atlanta by far compared to Athens, the AJC is run by ugag communications and journalism majors.

So, there you go.

you remind me of Buck Belue. You seem like a nice guy, but you look at everything Georgia with rose-colored glasses. Fulmer also won a lot of games (pretty close in winning percentage), a couple of SEC championships, and A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, and was one half (2001 SEC championship game vs LSU) from playing in another and he got FIRED! Why, because Tennessee fans expect more.

Until Georiga fans realize that ALMOST ALL of Richt’s success came in TN and FL down years, they are going to keep accepting medicore to good football teams. However, Ricth will NEVER take them to championship level with Meyer and Saban in the SEC.

I acknowledge that and I’m not trying to see who’s won more with who. Its obvious UT has had Georgia’s number the last 4 years. But where does that number come from? What about the last 10 years? UGA is 6-4 against the vols… Whats up with the instant gratification these days? I can see if a coach goes 7-5, 6-6, or even 8-4 consistently then they should be on their way out the door. But if a coach consistantly has 10 win seasons with a down year here and there, what is the logic in him being on the hot seat. The MNC will come, sooner than people think.

Hey Truth….you have a very short and feeble memory…that little school two hours away from Atlanta has kicked Techs ass seven of the past eight years in football. Even when Tech’s baseball,(I guess you decided to forget about Georgia playing in the final game of the College World Series last year, when was the last time Tech got there?), and basketball teams are ranked Georgia continually kicks Tech’s ass. What does that say about the level of competition in the ACC. Tech is, and has always been seen in Georgia and outside the state as a second tier school. Your entire student body and alumni have an incredible inferiority complex towards Georgia and always will because deep down you know that your athletic department and teams will NEVER be looked upon as anything more than average.Tech’s pompous attitude prompted them to leave the SEC years ago and look where it got them, playing in a second tier league against inferior competition. Well have fun cause the majority of UGA’s supporters could give a crap about Tech or any of your sports teams…..Georgia’s not perfect but we sure are a hellava lot better than that trade school you support….Can You Dig It!

I Run This State….I’m going with the under. I’d say that’s a gimmie!

There are so many topics to touch on from both the article and comments…I think a fresh perspective will be good for the program as a whole, but will put a little additional fire under the butts of the coaches as well. Every coach is a competitor and wants to win or they wouldn’t be where they are now. The key is how everyone interacts and communicates.

The Love incident…well I’d say that there more than likely was attitude on both sides. Cops abuse their power every day, and college athletes feel entitled. That’s just the way it is…

Tech fans…I don’t really know how to feel about you. My Grandfather, God rest his soul, was a great man, one of Atl’s most successful businessmen of his time, and a GT grad. He had so much more class than any one of you Tech fans on here, and I might add he was one hell of an athlete for GT. I have other relatives and some friends, who were only there for athletics, that graduated from Tech as well. My Grandmother, my Mom, several other relatives as well as many friends graduated from UGA… I got a better offer to play at another school or I would of played Baseball at UGA. I’m a Bulldog through and through…I’ll pull for Tech when they play other schools, because I feel it’s the right thing to do. But, I tell you what…some of you rejects that post on here make me want to take you behind the wood shed and beat the living crap out of you!! For fans/possible grads of supposedly a Institute of Higher Learning…you sure act like a bunch of kids who just haven’t got your way lately. And just plane act and sound like idiots on top of that!! I appreciate your support of your team, but get a little class and wake up! Tech just isn’t a better school than UGA. Not in one area…I know that there are certain areas that GT excels in but over all it’s just not a better school than UGA or for that matter some of the other schools in the state either. I’m sorry, and I know the truth hurts…but you must realize it in order to get better! GSU(State), KSU, GSU(Southern), Mercer….they all are good schools and have good athletics. And I have to say that they are all much classier than Tech fans. Because they respect the other schools and work hard to be as good as if not better…they don’t envy them and hate because their not as good as or because other schools are better.

I wish all respective team a successful season in all sports for 2010 and beyond…but, how about this as a goal for all bloggers on AJC for this year. Come, support YOUR team…come with intelligent input, maybe even some states to back up your statement. That would make this a much more enjoyable site and blog. If you can’t handle it…how about this…just stay off it! Personally I like to read what others have to say about certain issues that surround UGA, GT, and other schools that very well may effect play, recruiting, etc…but I just can’t handle some of the idiotic things that are posted on here. Please try….if not for me, then do it for yourselves!!!! Ignorance is the #1 issue with our country…right up there with greed. It’s hard to counter greed, but it’s a lot easier to take care of ignorance! Good Luck & God Bless!

Jordan Love doesn’t know how to spell his middle name? That is nothing short of amazing.

So with several players already arrested so far this year how many arrests has UGA had over the last 3 years? Is it over 30?

I think we all agree dawgs are this year’s runaway Fulmer cup winner.

Does this program have an shame or any embarrassment for the conduct of its players and AD?

refusing to give your middle name to a police officer is not an obstruction. This is simply an officer who is impressed with his own power. It is also an officer that should not have a job. If an officer throws his weight around in a simple sitiuation like this their is no telling what he would say or do in a more serious situation.

I would meet head to head and off the record with the top cop there and demand an apology and that the officer in question be fired. I would also inform the Chief that if another one of my players is arrested it had better be for more than “exiting an alley” or not giving his middle name. If the guy doesn’t get with the program I go over Adams’ head and talk to the money boys myself and watch the Chief’s head role. You have power coach, now learn how to use it!

If the cops are the problems like so many retards on here say, I have an answer to correct the problem. Hi my name is cmr I am the head coach of the football team if you want to play at uga you will follow my rules if not you will be off this team. Rule #1 do as the cops say. Rule #2 if you are under age don’t drink. See cmr its not that hard , grow a set (LIKE NICK) and man up and quit letting the BOYS as everyone says they are run the program.

SSIgator, did you say arrests? I assume the “gator” in your moniker means UF, the alma mater of such fine citizens as Tony Joiner (robbery), Riley Cooper (resisting arrest), Carl Johnson (some kind of sexual harassment or stalking), Cam Newton (burglary, larceny, obstruction), Brandon James (drugs – cost him one whole game), and about 20 others in recent years.

I’ll give you guys credit – despite having more thugs on the roster than The U in its heyday, you somehow managed to make wholesome Tim Tebow the face of your football program. Good luck maintaining that.

The fact you have beat us 17 out of 20 past seasons and I still feel like we somehow get under your skin… ;-) . The fact that the greatest college football player to ever step on the field played for the university of Georgia, the fact that UGA has the greatest mascot in the rich tradition of college football and Sanford stadiums beauty can never be matched. I really do understand why even after your recent dominance over us the past two decades how we still bother you so much and the rest of the haters from other teams. Whats going to happen once the wind changes back in our direction Gator fans? What will you possibly be able to say to us?? Atleast even when Georgia is not on top, when we put on that red and black on a saturday whether we are 0-12 or 12-0 we know what it is all about. There is nothing like it and that is why The university of georgia will NEVER be irrelevent to college football as much as all you haters would love. Bill you are the typical Georgia fan. So happy that Mark Richt isn’t Ray Goff that you’ll accept mediocrity for the last 5 years. Don’t give me the 2007 crap when Georgia “finished” #2 in the land and they couldn’t even win the SEC East. Mark Richt winning 9 or 10 games is not a badge of honor as they regularly play 13 games a year now. Also taking the side of the kid who can’t remember his middle name and refuses to give a police officer is the same attitude that Mark Richt has taken on discipline on the football field on game day. Personal foul penalties and players continually do it over and over again and are allowed to stay in the game. Championship coaches like Saban don’t allow it because it hurts the team. Mark Richt allows it because thats the kind of athlete he started recruiting in 2003. I use that year because a player that was there that was recruited by Donnan told me that was when he started recruiting a different kind of player. One that knows no discipline, one that cares about himself and his NFL future. Now the Dawgs have this son of a preacher man Lemay coming with his own set of problems. Ask Michael Grant how it worked out for him at UGA. And don’t give me the crap about him lying on the form. Good Lord if you believe that one you’re just looking for an excuse to allow him in. I hope he does get in, the circus with his Preacher daddy going at it with Mark Richt when he doesn’t get playing time should be a thing to behold, especially if he promised him playing time like he did DJ. All that did was cost the Dawgs a National Championship but hey, you wouldn’t hold that against Saint Mark would ya Bill? After all, he’s not Ray Goff.

Bill,

I have noticed that you have been more and more defensive lately. But, to take a shot at the Athens/UGA PD by comparing them to Barney Fife??? That is low. I have all the respect in the world for these folks. They do a job that nobody wants in a city that nobody wants to be in. They try to clean up the trash that is Athens, GA (Both literally and figuratively). This kid was stupid, that is why he was arrested. It wasn’t because of an issue with his middle name. It was because he put himself in a situation that ended in him having to deal with the cops. Why don’t you analyze that situation?? The football program (and most of the Athletic Department for that matter) is out of control. Simple as that. And as long as Mark Richt is there, using his Namby Pamby tactics to deal with his players, you will see this trend continue. I like Richt as a coach and admire his football mind. But, part of the job at a major D-1A school is to babysit the egos and keep them out of trouble. Richt is not very good at that. So, how about you quit criticizing the people who try to keep the community safe.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, the UGA Athletic Department is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for your University or your Athletic Department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their football team.” What a legacy to be proud of! And that’s not even including the infamous red panties.

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.  :-)

atlvol55 states most of Richt’s success has come in Florida and Tennessee down years. Using that logic you could also say:

Tennessee’s success in the 90s came when Georgia and Bama were having down years
Florida’s success in the 90s came when Georgia, Bama, LSU, and Auburn were having down years
Florida’s success under Meyer came when Georgia and Tennessee were having down years.

I would say this- anytime you win an SEC championship, or play for one, you have accomplished something significant, cause it ain’t easy in this league to even get to Atlanta.

Grindl,

Just a QUICK scan of the http://www…... (literally found in about 30 seconds)

Jan. 18, 2002
Cavalier Daily) (U-WIRE) CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In an event reminiscent of University of Virginia’s honor cases brought forth by physics professor Louis Bloomfield last spring, 187 Georgia Tech students are facing accusations of cheating by collaborating on a computer science class project.

Nov. 17, 2005 (who orchestrated this? GT coaches and administration maybe?)
ATLANTA — The NCAA placed Georgia Tech on two years of probation Thursday for using 17 academically ineligible athletes in four sports, including 11 in football.

June 11, 2010
Georgia Tech defensive end Robert Hall was suspended indefinitely from the football team by coach Paul Johnson after being charged with battery last Sunday.

Don’t bother quoting stats of UGA players arrested for underage consumption of alcohol. You are comparing apples and oranges…..UGA police take any student charged with MIP to Clarke County jail for processing. GT does not prosecute for underage drinking. Their policy is like all the other schools throwing stones at UGA.

GT handles it “internally” so there is no record of it outside the school… see the dean, alcohol awareness class, probation, and go back to class…… (talk about a cesspool of cover-ups)
