Will Adams go for best man or ‘yes’ man?

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

I’m enjoying the Independence Day holiday, as I hope you are, but I wanted to provide a fresh forum for looking ahead, now that it’s being reported UGA President Michael Adams has asked for and received Damon Evans’ resignation and an announcement will be made Monday.

That’s a good thing. Dragging this tawdry story out would only have further damaged UGA.

One of Evan’s staffers at the UGA Athletic Association apparently will be named the interim athletics director and then the search for a permanent replacement will commence.

As I wrote Saturday, I think the best move would be to hire Greg McGarity, an Athens native who grew up hanging out at the UGA tennis courts, graduated from UGA and spent quite a few years with the UGA Athletic Association. He has been with the University of Florida since 1992 and currently is the senior associate athletics director there.

Whether you think McGarity should have had the job in 2003 or agreed with hiring Evans at the time, UGA couldn’t do better than McGarity now. He has the experience. He knows how a very successful athletics program is run.

Other names of likely candidates are bound to surface. I’ve already seen mention of Dave Hart, the former FSU athletics director who’s now an assistant at Alabama.

But it’s hard to beat McGarity’s UGA bona fides. Whether that will help him or hurt him in the eyes of Adams is the big question.

This will probably be the most important hire Adams makes for some time. There’s been speculation that he’ll be tempted to go with someone he thinks he can control, someone who won’t buck him. Unfortunately, Adams’ past actions probably support that theory.

The spotlight is now on Adams, which apparently is where he likes it. I’m hoping this will be one instance in which he doesn’t disappoint us.

Again I ask: why did we spend millions on hiring census workers, when the tech fans have already conducted a national door-to-door interview of “everybody else” not a Dawg fan? There seems to a dozen or so that have those results.

I tell you what tech fans cannot be proud of. It’s their originality. Now in a world of walking caricatures, they are kings.

Greg McGarity, a University of Georgia graduate, is the logical and best choice for Georgia’s new AD as he is by far the most qualified. He has studied under one of the most successful Athletic Director’s of a championship program at The University of Florida and Michael Adams needs to the make best choice for UGA and without delay hire McGarity to lead the University of Georgia’s Athletic Program out of this scandal left by Damon Evans!

Your next AD will be a” yes” man/woman. Adams is a control freak and anyone with dignity will not put up with his BS.

@p. on the ground, are you kidding? is your world that small? uga is a fine school and happens to have a fine athletic department, one full of championship trophies in a variety of sports. who in the world are you quoting (”it has been said many times…”)? You Tech folks can neither read, nor communicate at all. Narrower scholarship (e.g., engineering) certainly does not mean better or more worthwhile scholarship. If you want to continue with trailer park, unemployment, burger-flipping comments, please open your mind to a world much bigger than north avenue. There you may find something closer to reality, one that would be much better if not for ignorance such as yours.

Thats a good point. Said many times by whom? Spend a lot of time rehearsing that one in the mirror? Certainly none of the tech fans that spend countless hours in our blog with no other agenda but to prop up thier football program never said such a thing.

TxDawg, do you think Evans put up with BS? Like what? I’ve never seen where his control freakiness was in direct conflict with operating a good program, have you?

You belittle McGarity by thinking he’d be that naive to be anywhere near Adams.

Don’t worry about the haters. It’s just a matter of time before another Techie gets arrested for selling drugs, another Gator for beaing his woman, (or possessing kiddie porn?), or a Bammer for doing something to get his university put on probation(yet again) that this entire episode w/ Evans will be yesterday’s news.

No delusion is involved, SEC fan. Once football season begins, this will be yesterday’s news. Now if he were to somehow stay on as AD, or work in the athletic dept in any capacity, you are right, then it would still be talked about.

The ‘Powers that be’ however, quickly took care of said problem.

I got news for you, the college boys think a pair of red panties is a badge of honor, and I haven’t heard too many grown married men raggin each other about getting caught fooling around or DUIs.

Now 3-point questions on a basketball test, THAT is good stuff. This just doesnt have the makings of a good burn. I think some folks just wish it did. As I said, knock ya’ll selves out. None of us are going to be least bit bothered. (well there is always a somebody in the crowd who is going to get shaking mad and be ashamed to be a bulldog), but for 99.999% of us, this is already water under the bridge.

Now if it were the coach on the field maybe.

And the average sports fan knows this isnt some kind of University wide corruption. Grade fixing or cheating or paying some booster is one thing, That’s the kind of stuff that lingers. THIS is official now the private matter of a very distraught family. It’s not like ESPN is going to be camping out on his lawn next week to ambush his wife, or follow his children to church camp.

This is not even being reported much in the west. USC (actual school involved) kind of dominate that news right now. And all the papers in this region are just running the capsules. The next reports will be that we hired somebody.

SEC fan, I suppose I could ask you why specifically McGarity wouldn’t want to work for Adams, but that seems to have been a waste of time asking the last dozen folks. Got anything to add to the boiler plate?

Ed makes too much sense. Adams is nothing more than an egomaniac and will not hire anyone that he thinks he can’t control. Adams should have been gone several years ago but apparently he received support from the Board of Regents which is nothing more than a rubber stamp for anything that Don Leebern wants. As much as I love UGA I hold it’s president in utter contempt.

Why is it that Georgia fans place blame for the football shortcomings and disappointment on everyone but the head football coach. Michael Adams is blamed for being a President that wants an athletic director that he controls? Hello? By definition he’s the President. By definition he hires people that he wants. Wow! What a concept. What he needs to do is hire an athletic director that will hold Mark Richts feet to the fire. Actually make his justify a National Championship salary by winning or at least competing for a National Championship. Instead the fan base will criticize the athletic director, the President, the current mascot, Jim Donnan, Ray Goff and my alltime favorite Jan Kemp. She’s still the root of all evil isn’t she?

I believe McGarity knows all to well Adams’ makeup as well as some of the other dealings in Athens – Leeburn/Yoculan’s interference, inept Bd of Regents that lets unethical/immoral behavior go unchecked, etc.

The Bd of Regents lets immoral behavior go unchecked? really? surely you cannot mean simply the case of a man living with a woman whom he on record intends to marry if is long estraged ex-wife, who for whatever reasons will not grant him a legal divorce and is an active participant in the arrangment? That’s rampant uncheck unethical behavior in a run away culture of immorality? Oh my! What else?

Mark Richt works for him. Mark Fox works for him. PLENTY of highly moral and honorable folks work for him. How odd.

If McGarity is serious about running an athletic department at a high profile school, especially one he has connection to, and one that is highly successful he woud put on his big boy undies and take the job, I assure you, despite the Boston Globe expose’.

That’s #40 in three years if you’re keeping score. No other school even comes close to having this many thugs and felons in its athletic program.

Blame the football arrests on Richt, he’s the one responsible for them. Michael Adams needs to walk out the door wirg Evans, but Richt needs to be right behind them. It’s no loss – Richt will never win another SEC championship, so why is he still there.

It’s time for a thorough housecleaning in Athens.

On Vince Dooley:

If I had to give Dooley a letter grade as AD, it would be a B-. Women’s sports and some of UGA’s second tier sports like Men’s and Women’s basketball and baseball did well during Dooley’s tenure. Some of Dooley’s internal hires were also solid. But the football program, which is the programs flagship sport;was subpar during the vast majority of Dooley’s tenure. He wanted to keep Jim Donnan a year longer than he should have, when like Willie Martinez it was more than obvious that Donnan wasn’t cutting it. And the Jim Harrick situation was just poorly handled by Dooley and Adams.

All that being said: I blame both Dooley and Adams for the way Dooley left. I blame Adams, because he could have saved himself a lot of trouble and just signed Dooley to a 2 year contract extension. Dooley, whether you like him or not( mark me in the ” do not like” category), was not a terrible AD. And to the UGA faithful he’s a legend. And you don’t fire legends. As long as they are doing a decent job, you let them stay as long as they like. Adams should have just given Dooley a 2 year extension and then have Damon as the AD in waiting. As long as Dooley is doing a decent job, why get rid of him just because you can? What’s the big rush? And Dooley, for his part, should have seen that the President was moving in a new direction and that direction didn’t include him. He could have spared himself the martyr role and retired, but his ego wouldn’t allow it. The lesson Dooley should have learned from all of this: don’t stay where you are not wanted, because you’ll be forced out sooner rather than later.

I’d like to see the the faculity again call for Adam’s resignation, and the Board of Regents to act on. He hired Jim Harrick, asked Dooley to force Harrick’s resignation, forced Vince Dooley’s retirement as A.D., and hired Evans. I’d love to send him packing also! His choices and arrogance STINK!!!!

I don’t mean to get off the topic of this article, but since the AJC wants to shut down the ability to comment on the Jordan Love arrest article, I suppose the AJC is trying to suppress our right to free speech. Here I thought all along it was just the Government that was trying to do that. Just to say real quick. What kind of bone head officer on an ego trip arrests a guy for not giving his middle name to an officer? You have his first and last and probably social security number, what more do you need? His time of birth, his birth weight? Geeze, what a sorry pile of crap that officer was.

Rest of the SEC

July 6th, 2010

The rest of the sec will be waving red panties as a show of disrespect since the UGA program has fallen into such a sad state of affairs.

Lets see: After the latest debacle with Damon Evans yet another UGA player gets arrested for refusing to give the police his full name. Is it remotely possible for UGA to go 1 or 2 straight months without a player getting arrested? Do they not teach players the most basic things when questioned by the police such as yes sir, no sir, cooperate, give your full name, etc.? Just how dumb can your players be to get arrested over and over and over and over and over?

And how is it that your saint of a coach leads the sec with 30 plus player arrests over the past 3 years? No one else is even close to UGA.

You guys run a dirty, filthy, renegade thug program similar to FSU in the 90s and Miami in the 80s. The only difference is that those programs whupped people’s azzes on the field and won championships. You guys can’t even beat Kentucky.

July 6th, 2010

Dogtards ruin this state,

You are a little bit harsh on the dawgs. They will not be getting the ncaa hammer anytime soon. They are too busy getting hammered with the police to deal with the ncaa cops also. But in their history the dawgs certainly have their issues.

According to the NCAA infractions cases database the dawgs are tied for 4th alltime with a host of other programs with 6 major cases. AU leads the sec, UGA is tied for 2nd along with Kentucky, and Mississippi is 4th with 5 major infractions cases.

Source is NCAA.ORG (ncaa legistlative database of major infractions cases)

1. Arizon state 8
2. SMU 8
3. Auburn, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Whichita State, and Wisconsin all with 7 each.
4. Cal, FSU, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Memphis, and UCLA with 6 major cases each.
5. Baylor, Cincy, Colorado, Miami, Fla., Mich. State, Miss state, NC State, Texas-Pan American, USC, UTEP, Washington, and West Virginia all with 5 major infractions cases each.

Isnt it about time for Adams to retire or move on?..how much longer musy we tolerate that arrogant imperious a$$hole. I wish it had been caught in the car..that would have been sweet.
