Will Adams go for best man or ‘yes’ man?

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

I’m enjoying the Independence Day holiday, as I hope you are, but I wanted to provide a fresh forum for looking ahead, now that it’s being reported UGA President Michael Adams has asked for and received Damon Evans’ resignation and an announcement will be made Monday.

That’s a good thing. Dragging this tawdry story out would only have further damaged UGA.

One of Evan’s staffers at the UGA Athletic Association apparently will be named the interim athletics director and then the search for a permanent replacement will commence.

As I wrote Saturday, I think the best move would be to hire Greg McGarity, an Athens native who grew up hanging out at the UGA tennis courts, graduated from UGA and spent quite a few years with the UGA Athletic Association. He has been with the University of Florida since 1992 and currently is the senior associate athletics director there.

Whether you think McGarity should have had the job in 2003 or agreed with hiring Evans at the time, UGA couldn’t do better than McGarity now. He has the experience. He knows how a very successful athletics program is run.

Other names of likely candidates are bound to surface. I’ve already seen mention of Dave Hart, the former FSU athletics director who’s now an assistant at Alabama.

But it’s hard to beat McGarity’s UGA bona fides. Whether that will help him or hurt him in the eyes of Adams is the big question.

This will probably be the most important hire Adams makes for some time. There’s been speculation that he’ll be tempted to go with someone he thinks he can control, someone who won’t buck him. Unfortunately, Adams’ past actions probably support that theory.

The spotlight is now on Adams, which apparently is where he likes it. I’m hoping this will be one instance in which he doesn’t disappoint us.

I am afraid that Damon must go and we need to hire McGarity. Maybe the timing wasn’s right for McGarity when Damon was hired but it definitely is now. Buck up Adams and do the right thing.

AltamahaDawg -That and academic rankings, I think. The graduation rate is high (among SEC schools) and improving. Is he *driven* to pass Florida in academics and athletics?

Seriously, can somebody explain that to me? We all agree that Adams has a big ego. How does that mean he doesn’t want the ADept to thrive?

Adams does what is best for him……just like what he did to Coach Dooley. Damon walked in and axed the senior staff his first day-just like Adams wanted….. UGA prez looks quite bad after some of the choices he made concerning the athletic department. Adams will do what benefits him-not players, coaches, staff and fans…wait and see….

I am 40 years old. I spent the entire weekend at home with my family. When I travel, I take care of my business, get a bite to eat, and then go to the motel and go to sleep.
It is called being a grown man and taking actions for your responsibilities. If you don’t do anything that puts you in a suspect situation, then you don’t have to scramble to get out of them. In this case, it cost Damon his career and possibly his family. Sad…

Michael Hitler is the President of the University of Georgia. He should stay out of athletics and run academics. He should only step in when there is a problem, such as the one with Damon Evans. He is the President of the Athletic Board and appoints all the members to that same board. Damon Evans was a puppet on a string for Dr. Hitler. He also makes an occasional trip under the desk of Sonny Purdue, who controls the Board of Regents. Don’t look for Mr. Hitler to go anywhere soon, and also look for him to hire from within so he can have another puppet on a string.

Michael Hitler is, and always will be the UGA Athletic Director.

I am sick if hearing all the King Vince talk. I do not want him back. Adams has done a great job at UGA like him or not. Everyone always forgets that Vince managed the department during the Herrick days while he did a horrible job looking over their shoulder. I know Adams may have supported or even suggested Jim Herrick for the job, but that did not mean that Dooley did not have the duty to manage the process. Instead he turned a blind eye knowing that all of you Dooley supporters would support him no matter what. Dooley played a power game with Adams and guess what the one with the most power always wins and that would be Adams. Dooley Sucks!!! I am glad Adams got rid of him.

It would be nice is our fans could talk about this on an adult practical level and leave the theatrics to Nora Roberts.

You do realize that you just credited every good thing that Evans ever did and the running of one of the most profitable Athletic Department in the country to Adams. Since Evans was just a puppet for him.

I believe so. Checked T. Tucker’s archives back through Feb. and couldn’t find it. Seems like it was 1st or 2nd in SEC. Higher than Georgia Tech’s, anyway.

adams don’t need to hire any body.uga has been in trouble since the day he set foot on georgia red clay.a self centered dictator is what he is. he needs to be put in the road and if the board of regents can’t see this they need to be put in the road to. when dooley was treated the way he was it should have been done then. they should have seen what kind or man they were dealing with then. and to think the ncaa had this man as a finalist to be over all of college sports. what he did to one school would have been done to the whole country.

Yes, Adams wants athletics to succeed but he wants even more to totally control the money. Dooley refused to give Adams a blank check and then Leebern found some red panties too and poof! Dooley was gone. The next AD will be just like Evans, an Adams puppet. Lets hope the next AD can manage the situation as well as Evans did. No self respecting, independent thinking athletic administrator will take this job and accept calling Adams every time they need to buy a box of paper clips.

Charlotte, you would probably need to have sit in one the meeting with the legal and HR guys to call that one.

He also has a wife and kids. Obviously that’s his problem, but I personally still consider them (and him) part of the UGA family.

Greg McGarity worked for and learned under Coach Dan McGill, UGA AD Joel Eaves, UGA AD Vince Dooley and UF AD Jeremy Foley. During the past 30 + years he has worked for two of the most successful athletic deoartments in the nation. He is smart, he has the right experience and he would never embarress the University of Georgia. You would have to be an idiot not to hire him as UGA’s AD. For that reason he may not have a chance!

UG would be smart to make a national search and to not just hire someone at the drop of a hat.

Plus, if they limit their choice to UG graduates only, they’re making a mistake. Get the best person for the job, not the best graduate – that’s a silly way to look at it.

I really hate this for Evans and for UGA. I don’t think Evans was “Super AD” (that role goes to UF’s Foley) and I don’t know what’s been going on in his dept (he may have been an ogre), but I think he made a good hire in Mark Fox. I also think he was correct in pressuring (I presume) Richt to make a DC change. I also think Mike Bobo is breathing a sigh of relief for now, because of obvious reasons, he would have been the next to be “replaced under pressure” because of a mediocre offense, with NFL-caliber players at nearly every position.

One other thing, these guys sign contracts, pledging to not embarrass their employer (Evans/UGA), so why do they STILL get a “negotiated settlement” when they do exactly what they pledged NOT to do? Why does Evans get to walk away with presumed huge dollars when he broke the contract?

Hopefully, Adams days are numbered at UGA. The position he coveted at the NCAA evaporated, and considering his track record at UGA, no other university would hire him. Adams’ protector, Sonny Perdue, will be retiring to his fish farm. However, it is not in Adams’ DNA to hire the best person for the job. Adams will hire another puppet, likely a black female, to demonstrate his commitment to political correctness. Adams has not surrounded himself with talented people. Rather, characters like Adams seek mediocre underlings, of which Evans was a perfect example.
