Will Adams go for best man or ‘yes’ man?

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

Greg McGarity (University of Florida)

I’m enjoying the Independence Day holiday, as I hope you are, but I wanted to provide a fresh forum for looking ahead, now that it’s being reported UGA President Michael Adams has asked for and received Damon Evans’ resignation and an announcement will be made Monday.

That’s a good thing. Dragging this tawdry story out would only have further damaged UGA.

One of Evan’s staffers at the UGA Athletic Association apparently will be named the interim athletics director and then the search for a permanent replacement will commence.

As I wrote Saturday, I think the best move would be to hire Greg McGarity, an Athens native who grew up hanging out at the UGA tennis courts, graduated from UGA and spent quite a few years with the UGA Athletic Association. He has been with the University of Florida since 1992 and currently is the senior associate athletics director there.

Whether you think McGarity should have had the job in 2003 or agreed with hiring Evans at the time, UGA couldn’t do better than McGarity now. He has the experience. He knows how a very successful athletics program is run.

Other names of likely candidates are bound to surface. I’ve already seen mention of Dave Hart, the former FSU athletics director who’s now an assistant at Alabama.

But it’s hard to beat McGarity’s UGA bona fides. Whether that will help him or hurt him in the eyes of Adams is the big question.

This will probably be the most important hire Adams makes for some time. There’s been speculation that he’ll be tempted to go with someone he thinks he can control, someone who won’t buck him. Unfortunately, Adams’ past actions probably support that theory.

The spotlight is now on Adams, which apparently is where he likes it. I’m hoping this will be one instance in which he doesn’t disappoint us.

Mr. (Dr. ?) Adams may miss the opportunity of his professional life if he doesn’t do just this:

Name Coach Dooley Interim Athletic Director, starting Tuesday.
Create a contract for him that lasts one year.
Until such time as he hires a permanent AD, Coach Dooley is it, fully, as in “buck stops here”.
When he hires a permanent AD – next day, next week, next month, next year – Coach Dooley’s contract calls for him to stay on as a “consultant” to the Department.

This wins for e’body:

Adams
Dooley
UGA students and alums
Fans
Athletic Department employees

Personally I hope Adams will not let his ego get in the way of the hire, but history says otherwise…

Bill, how long before the board says enough with Adams isn’t this his 3-4 hire that has not worked out?

Everyone is always rough on Mr. Adams. Evans was a good hire up to this point. Too bad…so sad about getting caught with the panties.

Would exactly would a new A.D do different. The head coaches are place. There is no need to replace either CMR of Fox. The new A.D will just be a figure head to smile for pictures.

Personally, I could care less for the money and business aspect. Just win more than you lose and keep it in your pants.

I feel bad for UGA and for Damon Evans, but this was too big a mistake for him to overcome. Based on his press conference, I do believe his apology was sincere and he seemed to fully recognize the severity of his mistakes. It sounds like the right thing is being done with the resignation, though. It was obvious he didn’t have enough support to continue, and with his role it wouldn’t have made sense for him to stay. I never met him in person, but it was my impression that he did a very good job for the Athletic Association. I sincerely wish him well.

If it looks like it will take a while to hire a new AD, I think Vince Dooley would be the obvious choice for interim AD, if Dr. Adams can work with him. I know Coach Dooley would do whatever was best for UGA, although he might prefer not to return with his son coaching at Tennessee.

Bill, I gather from your remarks that you do not like Adams. Why? He has done a remarkable job at UGA. The University has grown to be one of the top academic schools in the SE under his leadership.

Of course, maybe you are only interested in football.

Which brings up a question, are you a UGA grad? If so when?

MCGarity has no chance, although he is the best choice by far. If he succeeds like I know he would, it would be embarassing for King Mike, who passed him over the first time. King Mike will not backtrack. It is absolutely positive that he loves the spotlight and will always choose the show horse over the work horse. You guys are right that he should beg Vince to come back for a year giving him time to make a good selection, however he is King Mike, real estate baron and institution maker. Expect him to do something strange just to let everyone know that he is the Man in Charge.

He sure as hell doesn’t need to name Dooley as temporary anything. He and Barbara need to stay right where they are( she will probably be in Tenn. most of the time anyway hopefully with Vince) Adam needs to scour the country for the best man available (ala Fox) he doesn’t need to hire anyone who is already imbedded in the good ole boy network in Athens. He needs to bring in someone who is a tough SOB and can look at everything objectively and not be swayed by what is already in place (Richt for example) The coaches at UGA need to know that they either get the job done or they can follow Evans. Too many coaches there are resting on their laurels and that isn’t cutting it . The FANS deserve better than mediocrity!!!!!!!!!!!

It has to be...

..the black female asst AD – though McGarrity may be the better choice. Adams has to save face – he hired the first SEC AD who was black, now he has to hire the first black female. It is a win win for all, though it will be a wild ride as the Board and the school get used to a female leader – hope her panties are big girl size and not all red!

“Some Sense” – excellent thinking! Vince Dooley learned from Joel Eaves, and put the Athletic Department in the financial position it enjoys today. Whether President Adams likes Vince or not is not as important as the quality of the hire. Under the circumstance, I would hope Adams could bury the hatchet with Vince, and if Vince would consider helping out I know he could adapt to Adams within reason. I have worked hundreds of people over the years, and you have to let them do the job. If they can’t, then they have to be replaced.
Should Vince come back, he should be the decision maker until a permanent hire takes place. He knows the job much better than Dr. Adams ever would. This would give Adams and the board time to make the best choice for UGA.
Greg McGarity is an excellent target. I have known him for many years and he is a solid thinker. Other candidates will surface and no rush to hire would be necessary under Vince’s watchful eye and ability.
What say you DAWGS?

collegeballfan…………..UGA has not done anything under Adams but split and divide its alumni. He does not even reside in Athens. He has replaced every major department head at the University. He is wanting to destroy tailgating as you know it, his recomendation was to forbid it except for three hours before kickoff, even if kickoff was at 9PM. You need to read over his resume and read up on how he was hired and by whom, and you will see why the gymnastics coach was able to live like she did.

I still advocate Billy Payne as an interim choice, if he is willing, so that we can undertake a national search for the best choice. I don’t care what color Williams is, I’m just not sure a woman doesn’t face a significant disadvabtage at a football-dominated school.

Anybody with the good sense to leave the game in Jacksonville.

Whoever it is, I can’t think of a better time to be walking into the job. Capital improvement under way and already financed or paid for. Basketball program poised to improve. Football program seems to be refocused. Baseball fuiure surely has to be better with all the youth. Multiple other sports in great shape.

I don’t like this short list of candidates mentality going on right now though. Nothing against them, but I know there are a dozen good candidates waiting to be googled. This is a top notch job.

You guys assume that McGarity was qualified and willing back then, but I find it difficult to believe that in 6 yrs he has not recieved one offer that would have been a step above what he is doing now. Him taking and building a program at a smaller school for a while would have been a much smarter career move than waiting a decade if need be for the AD at Georgia to giggle at a state trooper.

Ceph, I’m a loyal DAWG and I totally agree with you’re assessment. Most Uga fans want to live in the past. I don’t think I can stand to here one more “bring Vince Dooley back comment”. Why? He did a lackluster job as AD. He hired ray goff and then had a deal to bring in Glenn mason, only to get left at the alter. Then had to hire Jim Donnan out of desperation. How great was UGA football under Vince Dooley as AD? How about hiring Ron Jirsa to replace Tubby Smith? Any of you Vince Dooley supporters out there want to comment on these coaching hires. Vince was a great football coach but he did a subpar job as AD. I agree with the folks who want to bring in a tough minded outsider.

No need blaming Michael Adams for anything. He is merely doing what he is told by the Board of Regents.
It’s all politics with this much money in the UGA Athletic Dept. (Next to Texas, the highest income in the country) and the Board of Regents are very pleased with all the $$$.
Universities are the biggest prostitutes in the Universe.
If the UGA fans want to get rid of the umbrageous Michael Adams they will have to make some changes in the Board of Regents.

[...] will Michael Adams be able to set aside his perceived need for a “Yes Man” in order to find an AD who is willing to go the extra mile to make Georgia football not only [...]

Dooley wouldn’t accept the position if offered, since his son is now head football coach at UT. Even if he wanted to, Barbara would kill him if he did.

Adams won’t do what is the best for the University. He will get the person who best feeds his overblown ego.

“No need blaming Michael Adams for anything.”

Who is the guy responsible for fund raising? Adams, I would think.

Georgia ranks #125 nationally in endowments at $456 million. That’s 4th in Georgia, behind Emory #16, Georgia Tech #61 and Berry College #101.

Stanford at #3 is the highest ranked FBS school at $12.619 billion.

Layinlow – I sure hope they don’t hire you. Coach Dooley built one of the best athletic programs in the nation, if not the overall best. As far as coaching hires. He did hire Tubby Smith and gave it to Jirsa because of loyalty, he deserved a shot. He hired Ray Goff, because he knew Goff was a great recruiter and we new with the Jan Kemp deal numbers were going to be at an all time low. You have to give Goff credit, he brought in some kind of talent. He just never had a Defensive Coordinator. Wayne McDuffie was a heck of an Offensive Coordinator. Dooley also hired Ron Polk who would still be at UGA had Miss. St. not called him back. Other than this year you can’t argue with Coach Perno’s success. He was also one reason we got Hugh Durham and Andy Landers. You ask people across the country what kind of AD he was and you will see what he was thought of nationwide. I going and just stop because you showed your ignorance, maybe Dooley didn’t give you a scholarship.

“If the UGA fans want to get rid of the umbrageous Michael Adams they will have to make some changes in the Board of Regents.”

The Governor, Sonny Perdue appoints the University System of Georgia Regents. Adams and the presidents of the other 3 research universities (Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the Medical College of Georgia) report to the Board of Regents via the Chancellor. The other 31 schools report through lower tiers in the hierarchy.

Here is what I don’t get about this ego deal. Are you suggesting that a highly successful athletic department would not look good for Adams? So, he is likely to hire somebody that will not be as successful, not make as much money, not bring the University national attention, in an effort to make himself look good? Isn’t that sort of the opposite of what a person trying to look good do?

Wouldn’t whats best for the University, somebody who brings in lots of money to build big structures and hires great coaches that win lots of games, be EXACTLY what woulod feed his overblown ego?
