Evans shouldn’t wait to be fired by UGA

Damon Evans wants to keep his job. Surely he must realize that's impossible. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

Damon Evans wants to keep his job. Surely he must realize that's impossible. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

The odds already were long against Damon Evans keeping his job as UGA’s athletics director after his DUI arrest this week. But the damning and embarrassing details that surfaced with the release Friday of the Georgia State Patrol incident report pretty well seal the deal.

According to the state trooper who made the arrest, Evans repeatedly invoked his position at UGA to try to avoid being taken into custody, which alone would make it difficult for President Michael Adams to justify keeping Evans at the head of the school’s athletics program. Throw in the widely quoted report of Evans crying uncontrollably and his companion’s red panties in his lap and, well, no institution wants a drunken punchline as its public face, no matter how well he otherwise might have done his job.

Evans, who we now know was less than forthcoming at his press conference the other day, said he wants to keep his job, but if he somehow thinks he’s going to come out of this still as Georgia’s AD, he’s thinking about as clearly as he was when he got into that car with Courtney Fuhrmann.

That’s why, if he really wants to do what’s best for the school where he played football and graduated as well as for himself, Evans won’t wait for Adams to fire him. He’ll resign. Without delay.

And if Evans doesn’t step down right away, Adams doesn’t need to wait for the DUI case to make its way through the courts before acting. It doesn’t really matter whether Evans is convicted of those misdemeanors. He might have been a great financial administrator of the nation’s second most profitable college football program, but that’s only part of the job. The AD also represents the university’s athletics interests to the public, and in that capacity Evans clearly no longer will be able to function effectively.

So one way or the other — through Evans resigning or Adams going ahead and terminating him — this situation needs to be resolved as quickly as possible and an interim AD named, presumably from the UGA Athletic Association staff.

Greg McGarity ought to be considered as the new AD at UGA. (University of Florida)

Greg McGarity ought to be considered as the new AD at UGA. (University of Florida)

Moving ahead in finding a new athletics director, maybe it’s time for UGA finally to call home Greg McGarity, an Athens native who grew up as one of Dan Magill’s tennis brats, graduated from UGA, worked for quite a few years for the UGA Athletic Association and is currently the senior associate athletics director at the ultra successful University of Florida, where he’s worked since 1992.

Quite a few folks in Athens thought McGarity should have had the UGA job back when Evans got it. After what’s transpired this week, it looks like they were right.

What’s happened to Evans is a tragedy for the man himself and especially for his family, even if it’s of his own making. I’m not here to condemn him morally. What we’re talking about is what’s best for the University of Georgia.

Whether Adams hires someone with UGA ties like McGarity or decides to lure an athletics director from another school, one thing is clear: There should be no foot-dragging in bringing the Damon Evans era to an end.

I have witnessed said mr evans and his entourage of young ladies at different venues aroud town, i have to say that i am not suprised in the least.

furthermore, as someone who is struggling to survive in today’s economy, and who would be financially wiped out by a DUI, i can’t say i have any sympathy with someone who thinks they are bulletproof and also believes that they can leverage their “position” to get out of obeying the law.

the spotlight is now on dr. adams….the man who brought us jim harrick and jim donnan ‘under the table’ guaranteed salaries…..it feels real great to be a georgia bulldog today.

[...] forbid UD would be accused, what with the Damon Evans thing and all, of piling [...]

As a Gator fan this event isn’t one of fun. Deviant as the acts were, I would hope most of us have compassion for his family. I can only begin to imagine what Evans is going through right now.

Every program has had and will have its’ share of disappointments. It’s part of the human condition (tho given the man’s position, this one could be hard to top)..

The question is what will UGA do about it? After reading comments about Adams and Leebern and their history, the Board of Regents needs to make some long term changes for the sake of UGA, its’ “flagship” university.. From what I’ve read, terminating Evans doesn’t cure the cause of the problem but more possibly the result. It appears the culture that Adams/Leebern have created is the cause.

Warhorse, curdawg fans conviently forget that the curs ran up the score and beat the Gators 75-0 in 1942 and 51-0 in 1968 so really the Gators still have some room to further pay back the curs for running up the score on them!

The real question is:
Is it really true that if you get your friend to take off his/her red panties (or shorts) and hold them between your legs, while you drive, you will be more successful in getting your friend home safely?

What about Billy Payne? It is a sad time for the DAWG NATION. I am a huge supporter of Evans and a contributer to the university and the athletic program. I think there are many parts to this, but bottom line is, Adams has to be very careful about getting rid of Evans for one reason, the color of his skin. People may disagree, but i have heard a few people (BLACK MEDIA MEMBERS ON TV AND RADIO)allready say that UGA will use this to get rid of him because he is black and he was with a blond. i do not agree at all, if skin color was an issue, he would not have been hired in the first place, but the race card is out there.

Mr. Evans should not have even held the press conference as now, with the details coming out, it makes him look almost defiant. It also seems that Mr. Adams vacation hold is not making the University a priority in such a crisis. And this is a crisis.

I have lived around Georgia people all of my life and I know that you won’t stand for this embarassment for long. This entire fiasco needs to be dealt with swiftly; and I know that the Georgia faithful won’t wait long for that to happen. There’s no choice but to rid the school of this man as he has made a really big mistake. Somehow, based on the details, I doubt this is isolated. That makes it very sad and pathetic for his family.

You get rid of this guy and you move on. Georgia’s proud people won’t be down for long. But I agree, based on the facts, there’s no way that Mr. Evans keeps his position. I doubt seriously he keeps his wife, either. I wonder where he told her he’d be that night… Obviously too much status for this man to handle… Good luck with the change.

AthensOconee DAWG -

For people to even TRY to paint the outcome of this – either way – as biased, is absolutely absurd. As long as our society continues to use the race card to skew the reality of a situation, we make no progress as a society.

If Damon Evans had the integrity that we were led ot believe he had, he would have resigned already.

Hopefully Mr. McGarity will come home to lead us.

As for President Adams. his two UGAAA hires (Harrick and Evans) obviously have been poor, to say the least. He needs to get his butt out of the UGAAA and stay out of it.

And all of you married guys out there need to keep it in your pants unless you are with your wife.

If it can be proved that Michael Adams and his cronies paid hush money to the bimbo to leave town this weekend and NOT speak to the media, then Adams should be fired immediatley. Next, Vince Dooley could step in as intierm AD until and new President is found that can lead UGA and not divide the Georgia Family. Further, once the new President is found I nominate Billy Payne as AD.

Is the Administration on an African Safari? The arrest occurred June 30, and it’s now July 3 and Evans is still the Athletic Director of the University of Georgia. His butt should have been sent packing by the close of business on Thursday. Worst case, by noon yesterday. This is an embarrassment for the university, and the admin’s paralysis is almost Obama-esque. Get rid of the guy. This is no-brainer.

Now, I kinda have an idea who it was, and she also has been reading this blog, so if it was you (you know who you are) please admit to it so we can kiss and make up!

Anyway, I bet football season is gonna be a real doozy!

I can hear the jokes now…”Hey, why don’t they use Damon for the new UGA mascot. He’s proven he is a true dog!”

Oh good grief! I’m gonna go stick my head back into the sand! Y’all call me when all of this crap is over!!

I think judging Damon is wrong. The Christian thing to do is to pray for him and his lovely family. I know his children will be fine even if they have to live in a $200,000 home and go to public schools. I am sure he hasn’t always been very well off. What is going to matter is that he asks God for forgiveness, forgive himself and move on. He can and will get through this. We will all have to answer to God one day. Be careful how you judge others, take a look at your life, you could fall as well.

Hire McGarity NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or just fire Adams & Evans. Adams is the one who hired him. Most ADs get fired for hiring the wrong head coach, so why shouldn’t Adams be fired too?

UGA positions itself other than what it is. They have had over 50 arrests since 2001, they haven’t won a title in 30 years, and have had cheating coaches (See sleazy basketball coach) and now an A.D. Who gets drunk, drives drunk, and cheats on his wife and embarrasses his family.

They are all idiots.
