Evans isn’t out of the woods yet

Damon Evans, seen here with Mark Richt, will have to do more than apologize. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Damon Evans, seen here with Mark Richt, will have to do more than apologize. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So, did Damon Evans do enough in his news conference late Thursday to save his job?

He struck the expected contrite tone, apologized for the shame he has brought on the University of Georgia and his family with his arrest on DUI charges, promised to learn from his “grave, grave” mistake, and thanked UGA President Michael Adams for standing by him.

Somehow, just learning a tough lesson doesn’t seem enough, does it? And it should be noted that Adams said in a statement released by UGA that he “will reserve further action pending a full review by staff and legal counsel,” so Evans isn’t out of the woods yet.

Frankly, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t have to do a lot more than just apologize. UGA athletes arrested on alcohol-related charges must sit out at least 10 percent of a season. If Evans is going to get to keep his job, it would seem only fair that he at the very least forgo that $110,000 salary increase that went into effect today.

Beyond that, some sort of outreach program aimed at restoring his credibility with UGA students, employees and supporters would also seem a must.

And there’s still the possibility that the backwash from all this could result in Evans and/or Adams concluding that he no longer can effectively lead the UGA Athletic Association.

After all, he is in a position of responsibility over more than 600 student athletes at a university that’s put a big emphasis on trying to stem an almost endemic underage drinking problem. And on top of that he was the public face of those don’t-drink-and-drive messages that run on the scoreboard at Sanford Stadium in the fall.

DUI is a hot-button issue. You never know who might be coming over the center line straight at you or one of your loved ones out on the road late at night.

It doesn’t matter that Evans has been an excellent financial steward of the UGA Athletic Association’s $85 million budget since taking over the athletic director’s job six years ago today, managing to keep the program among the few in the country that are highly profitable in tough economic times.

While the bottom line usually rules in modern big-time college football, institutions like the University of Georgia are very sensitive to a public relations nightmare like having Mr. “If You Drink and Drive You Lose” accused of doing exactly what he’s warned UGA fans against.

So when that Atlanta DUI arrest mug shot of Evans looking more than a bit worse for wear hit TV and the Internet Thursday, the odds of him getting out of this with his career intact grew rather long.

All the facts of Evans’ case still aren’t known. And it has yet to be adjudicated. DUI cases don’t always stick, as has been proved this week in Gwinnett County with County Commission Chairman Charles Bannister.

But you’ve got to wonder how a guy like Evans, a graduate of UGA’s prestigious Terry College of Business and one of the youngest ADs in the nation when named to the position at 34, got himself into a situation like this.

Frankly, he seemed so much smarter than that.

I don’t know if he should be fired, but Damon Evans definitely needs to be disciplined for what he did last night. A stupid decision like this from the AD of a major sports school cannot just be ignored with no discipline.

I really do not think he can survive this situation. First getting a DUI is really bad and send the worse message not just to student/athletes but all students. The second issue that you didn’t mention is why was he with a very attractive 28yo woman who wasn’t wife at midnight after having drinks? That second question could be the career killer more than the DUI

I would like to meet one person walking on this planet that has never made a mistake! Yes, it is a black eye for the University, but their is an opportunity here for Dr. Adams to use this in a positive way…don’t fire Damon Evans – chronicle his redemption from this mistake. I think the students of UGA and the public as a whole can learn a lot more watching a man learn, grow and change from one mistake. He deserves a chance to make this one wrong a positive for all in the Bulldog nation. I really think anyone in Sanford stadium on any given Saturday in the Fall will learn a heck of a lot more on drunk driving from someone that went through the experience then any of the messages that played on the jumbotron in 2009.

University and Pro players get off the hook with DUI’s and all manner of offenses. University coaches that do something shady get a golden parachute and the school usually buys out their 6 figure contracts. Your alumni donations at work.

This is a very embarrassing situation for the University of Georgia. As the overseer of all of the hundreds of student athletes, he has put himself and the Univ. in a most unenviable position. I am not one to rush to judgement and say dump him, because I in my youth did some foolish things that I asked forgiveness for and desired a second chance. That being said, Mr. Evans is no kid, and he should do the honorable thing and resign. How can he stand up in front of young people and be taken seriously if he is sounding off about issues such as this? JMHO

Fire him. How can he ever lead the program in disciplining student athletes. Evans has lost all credibility in my book. For example, can he ever look the football team in their eyes and warn them against alcohol related arrest? What a joke that would be! I’m diehard UGA and I want him gone.

Bill, do you think that this might have adverse affect on football recruiting? Would other schools somehow use this against UGA?

People who do wrong are usually the ones who pretend to be so religious and upright in their community, therefore, they want to preach to the rest of us heathens it seems. I have attended the UGA games since I graduated in 1960 and no one ever told the alumni not to drink and drive and be good until Damon Evans took over. I find this very funny and amusing that the Administration got took for a ride with this three legged Dawg. I still don’t like the fact that Vince Dooley who put Georgia in the black does not get credit for this. I also do not like the fact that Vince was fired and Damon was allowed by the President to fire all the staff as well. All Damon did was take over a program that was already at the top. Why should students, alumni, fans and all the Bulldawg nation believe in Damon. I think he is old enough to know what he did was wrong to all involved. What a disgrace! He will never have another position of this importance ever again.

P.S. What was he doing with a woman with him. Possibly going over the budget?

I am officially ashamed to be a Georgia Bulldog. I never thought in a million years I would ever say that. I am so angry I am shaking. There is NO integrity at my beloved university. Many already assumed that Michael Adams had little, if any integrity, and his decision to not fire Evans or demand his resignation is all the proof one needs if there were ever any doubt.

If Damon Evans himself had an ounce of integrity he would have resigned. Someone who is a REAL leader would resign. Instead, like a coward, he is pitifully clawing and crying for his job, and has convinced other cowards to let him keep this job he no longer deserves. How can this man look another student athlete or coach in the face when he has to pronounce judgment over an alcohol-related incident?

When I was in the Marine Corps, two guys I knew were killed by a drunk driver. It doesn’t matter if this was Evans’ “first real mistake,” or his only “blemish” on a spotless resume. The DECISION he made, not a mistake, the DECISION he made could have led to his death, or even more unfortunately, the death of innocent others.

Evans deserves NO empathy, NO sympathy, and NO mercy from the media and members of Bulldog Nation.

I will NEVER donate or give a single cent to UGA or the UGA AA until Evans is gone. Any ticket I buy will be through Stub Hub, so as to ensure that the money I earn never enters the pockets of Evans or of those who refused to do the right thing today. My money is too honest for UGA.

Sinners,
If he deserves another chance, then how do you respond to the kids that have been kicked out of the university for the same thing? He doesn’t “deserve” a damn thing except the same opportunities that everyone else has. If he chooses to waste those opportunities over a night of partying with a skank, then he “deserves” to be fired. Most of us in the private sector would lose our jobs for the same thing. There are code of conduct policies that most professionals must adhere to.
If he wants to act like a fool, then let him be a day-laborer. Then no one will give a damn what he does on his own time.

Damon has done a great job during his tenure. However, those at the top are held to a higher standard and I am sorry to say, he must be terminated. There is no way the athletic department will ever be whole if he remains. This is UGA’s opportunity to let their student/athletes know that they are serious about disciplinary actions for those that step out of bounds. If Damon is allowed to stay all future student/athlete discipline will be seen as hipocritical.

Look at the mug shot folks. He hadn’t had “just a couple beers,” he couldn’t even look up at the camera! He was absolutely hammered. And yes, you can be charged with DUI even if you refuse the breathalizer. You can face some pretty stiff penalties for refusing. I’m not against a responsible adult having a few drinks – I enjoy them occasionally myself, but either sitting in my chair at home or with a DD if I’m out. I believe in extremely stiff and severe penalties for any DUI – I’ve both tried to stitch back together victims (child and adult) of drunk drivers and had family members violently killed (dismembered) in car wrecks caused by drunk drivers. A man in his position should be held to a high standard, and as an Athens native and UGA alumnus, I cannot condone anything less than his dismissal. I supported him as he was named Dooley’s successor, and now I’ll be just as vocal in calling for his firing. Yes, he has done a great job in filling some big shoes after Dooley, but we will be the picture of hypocrisy if we dismiss Mett for groping a girl and allow Damon to keep his job and over half a million dollar salary. Time to cut ties and try to salvage the image of the UGAAA. Fire. Him. Now.

2.) She’s probably not “just a friend”. (wink-wink) Stating the obvious. Sorry.

3.) Adams is just as big of a hypocrite as Evans, so I doubt he gets fired.

4.) If he doesn’t get fired, then he needs to be suspended without pay for 10% of the year
(”season” which his is all year).

5.) If he doesn’t get suspended, every student and student-athlete are going to think all

Having served as state Madd chairman for 4 years I have seen the horror and wasted lives caused by drunk drivers who kill helpless victims by their selfish act.Damon was lucky he did not end up with a manslaughter charge. These type of incidents dont just happen they have a pattern of attitudes.Late night,Atlanta, single woman. Damon if he has character can only solve the problem by resigning.

Hanky Panky Evans Deserves Knockout!!!!

July 1st, 2010
9:15 pm

Hanky Panky cost Tiger Woods greatly. Hanky Panky should cost Damon Evans his job. The DUI was bad enough but whoring around is the lowest level for someone who is suppose to be the model of integrity. How can any athlete at the University not say, “Look at good old Demon Evans, out boozing and whoring around and he don’t allow us to have a beer”. “If he can do it, we can do it too”. Truly, we are the laughing stock of the SEC. How can the University allow the face of the athletic program have a mug shot on tv and still stay we stand behind him all the way. What they do with Evans will determine if UGA is an institution of integrity or just another compromise because he makes money. If there was a vote, I would strongly vote “fire him now”. Hanky Panky just isn’t acceptable for those in Evan’s position.

July 1st, 2010

Damon Evans drunk with a 28 year old blond in his car at midnight. Has there been any response? Will there be any response? She was charged, she was drunk and she was headed somewhere with someone’s husband at midnight. In our wildest dreams we could not come up with an explanation for this event. If anyone ever deserved to be fired, it is Evans. This was more than bad judgment, it looks like a Tiger Wood outing. I have lost ALL respect for Evans and believe Adams and the Athletic Board should fire him as soon as possible. I can’t wait to see how Evans tries to spin the story of where he and the blond were heading. It should be one to top Tiger, Bill Clinton and Jim Baker. Evans was sorry he got caught, he did not seem sorry for what he had done.

Fla Dawg did I SAY that’s what I thought? Because that would be news to me.

And I think you are confusing mistake with accident. Accidents are out of your control. Mistake can be made. Clearly he wasn’t trying to say “whoops, I unintentionally or erronously did something”. I don’t think there is any danger that he was trying to cleverly excuse his action by calling it a mistake and not decision. His decisions lead him to make a mistake, how’s that?

I said this afternoon what I think is going to happen.

The Big Black Eye Damon Evans gave the University of Georgia, deserves an immediate and total response from the Administration. I am madder than Hades at his lack of integrity. What a loser!
The Drunk charge was bad enough but the drunk single friend in his car at midnight. Come on, what could it be if he had so little resistance to drinking, how much resistance did he have for her. Everyone I have talked to are adamant that Evans should be fired as soon as possible.
He will never regain his credibility or respect. He gave the University of Georgia a Big Black Eye and now it’s time for Adams and Company to Bloody His Nose. If no serious actions are taken, it will send a message that UGA has double standards for high level administrators.
If this were a football player, he would be kicked off the team as we have seen with Mattenburger… sex and drinking. Sex and drinking with him and drinking and possible sex with Evans… kick Evans off our team now.

Nice the AD is a hypocrite and gets a DUI after coming down hard on the student athletes who have done the same. More importantly, what was Evans doing with a trampy drunk chick, not his wife in Buckhead around midnight? No possible good going on there.

At least she did not get caught polishing his helmet in the middle of the act. Evans needs to fall on his own sword, what an embarrasment. Maybe there is a reason a young punk should not be chosen for an AD leadership role. Just not mature and wise enough.

We all make mistakes. Some are just permanent. This was a permanent mistake that can’t be taken back. Adams has also made a huge mistake by not taking the immediate action of relieving Evans of his responsibilities. First, how can Evans focus on his job with this looming over his head? Second, what message has he sent? Third, a sign of the times, you can get away with murder these days….Sad day and this sickens me….No accountability these days….Good Day Dawgs, our Country is going to hell in a handbasket…..As I said in an earlier post, it’s OK to be warm and fuzzy, offer Evans the opportunity to get help and keep him on at the University in another position. What will be in the minds of recruits and their parents with Damon Evans actions? As Christian and as quality a man as CMR is, Damon has proven just the opposite. Drunk, with a young totally drunk woman, a night in jail, a meaningless apology and he still has his job. To restore image, integrity and pride, Evans must be fired. While everyone is preaching about credibility, hypocrisy and accountability let’s take into consideration the acts of the 535 members of our U.S. Congress.

Numbers from 1999: from http://www.capitolhillblue.com/Aug1999/081699/criminalclass1-081699.htm

* 29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.
* 7 have been arrested for fraud.
* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks.
* 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.
* 3 have been arrested for assault.
* 71 have credit reports so bad they can’t qualify for a
credit card.
* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.
* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting.
* 21 are current defendants in lawsuits.
* And in 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional immunity.

I say fire them all.

Evans needs to go….period. Like the guy couldn’t afford a cab.

His credibility as a role model and advocate against drinking and driving can never be restored.

There is no further damage going to happen in one day or one week. You might just have to listen to some nerds for a fesw days, but could that be any more annoying anyway.

I would submit that in the big picture, the University has more to gain from a planned resignation, or even a well-considered dismissal bringing to LIGHT the university standards, rather than letting the story dictate that UGA had to scramble and fire somebody.

I said relieve him of his duties and responsibilities immediately, reason being he can’t focus on his job with his personnel problems. Now the University has taken quick and decisive action, no one can say anything to the contrary.

This man has made a mistake of gigantic proportion, if his judgement was this poor he can’t be trusted with making decisons concerning young peoples lives at this time.

Offer him the opportunity to seek help, find him another place where he can “serve” the University, let him work, feed his family, and if someday he is judged as a person who has learned from his mistakes he can “reclimb” the ladder. Maybe I’m seeing this differently from others, but Adams’ comments sound to me like a president who is probably going to fire Evans, but wants to consult with University lawyers to make sure proper procedures and due process are followed to avoid having to pay a large buyout. If he wants this to be a “dismissal for cause”, then he has to follow proper procedures.

I know people sometimes find this frustrating, but the state cannot simply fire employees the way a private sector employer can. In Cleveland Board of Education vs. Loudermill (1985), the Supreme Court ruled that certain public-sector employees must be given due process in any termination of employment. This is why you sometimes see public employees suspended with pay pending an investigation – the state/local government/school is simply following the necessary due process procedures to make sure the termination won’t be overturned in court.

It will be certainly interesting to see what Adams does, and what is Dooley’s take on this? For the integrity of the program he should be dismissed immediately. This is just a sad, sad mess. A DUI is one thing, but a girl 12 years younger (and single I assume) in your car is another. What the heck was she doing in the car? Not to mention I ain’t seeing anything there that would want me to give her a ride somewhere. Something just isn’t right. They say large money can turn a man into a corruptible person, especially during challenging times and personal crisis. Looks to be the case.

If you can’t do your job you shouldn’t expect to get paid. Can Damon tell the game day crowd at Sanford Stadium not to drink and drive without 93,000 fans rolling their eyes? Can he hold himself up as an example to the 600 student athletes at UGA? Can he address moral issues with student athletes? Can he discuss moral issues with their parents? Can we present him with pride to recruits and their families? It is really sad, but he shouldn’t still be “growing and learning” that you you don’t drive drunk and get caught with a 28 year old woman. Minimum wage employees may still be learning that, not $500,000 employees. Its sad, but he did it to himself. Not smart. Not anyone else’s fault.

Tragedy’s happen every day to untold numbers of people. This tragedy is one of their own making. Perhaps as a society if we didn’t tolerate this kind of galootin by our citizens we would slowly but surely slow these types of tragedys down. Once again, Evans should be relieved of his duties immediately. Legal wrangling can take place afterwards. Adams should have shown leadership, compassion can occur behind the scenes as far as helping Mr. Evans is concerned. Sometimes people get bloody noses in fights, what a novel concept.

ooooooooo We’re sooooo impressed. A whole 10 percent! (and if convicted) In football, that’s a whole game… like against one of the three 1-AA teams you play every year. Boy that’s a source of pride!

But it also does give Mr. Hiporicht the leeway to ’suspend’ for (4) separate quarters against (4) separate teams, which he’s done on more than one occasion.

Then he spouts his FAKE hypocritical Christian BS.

Guess what people? You have 1 beer, drive, get pulled over and you can be charged and convicted of DUI. It is the biggest scam the police run and it is a shame they prey on the emotions of family victims such as MADD to make a lot of money.

That being said, Damon wasn’t hammered. He just closed his eyes during the mug shot so you all people couldn’t say he had bloodshot eyes when he was sleepy (folks he probably took the picture at 3 or 4AM you would look the same way too last night at that time if you had to take a pic). If you have 1 beer and get pulled over DO NOT TAKE ANY TEST. If you get out the car the cop has already made the decision to arrest you and you are going to jail. At that point the cop is just collecting evidence. YOU SHOULD NEVER BLOW UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. The system is designed to CONVICT you, not adjudicate you. The young gal also arrested recently graduated from college in 2005, in the BMW, drunk at Midnight is not related to The University of Georgia, and is a friend of Damon Evans, a married man.

Wonder what his wife thinks of that.

Maybe Coach Richt can make some calls when he gets back from Vacation and can get Damon Evans a job as Athletics Director at Arkansas.

Or, maybe as Director of Player Personnel Development for Paul Johnson at Georgia tek.

Party School Ranking just went way up with photos from the soon to be released video hit the Internet of the how DRUNK AS A SKUNK the gal was, not involved with UGA according to Damon but a friend. Got that Damon.

At UGA, Michael F. Adam$ hires a AD who runs around with recent college grads as a 40 something himself at Midnight 4th of July Weekend, whom Damon says is a friend and not involved with anything at The University of Georgia

DRUNK AS A SKUNK refusing breathalyzer test.

You drink you drive you lose video on 1st blush can never be played again, but actually it should continue here at UGA long after Damon Evans is gone – same video.

Those in leadership are always judged by a higher standard whether they like it or not. They are not perfect and should not be expected to be, but when it involves endangering other lives or losing credibility, he should step down in order to send a message to those under him. On the other hand, if he submits to his authorities and shows others he is willing to do anything to get his good name back, I’m for that. It will be hard though to do that with the way the news media is. They always like a good scandal and are willing to milk it for all it’s worth until a person is worse than he really is.

I agree that nobody is perfect. But this is not about perfection. It’s about poor decision-making by a man who leads a major college athletic department and his future ability to be taken seriously by the student athletes and fans in that program. It’s difficult for many people in these current economic times to understand why a man who has been given so much . . . a great job that pays him exceedingly well to do something that he dearly loves and a beautiful wife and family . . . would jeopardize it all like this. Evidently Damon either has something eating at him or he thinks he’s ten foot tall and bullet proof. Before this sorry episode I thought we had a rising superstar among major college ADs. The basketball coach at Tenn got away with it, but look at their moral history. He is gone and I wish Adams would go out with him.

Unfortunately, this incident reveals alot about Damon’s true character. So sorry this happened to him, but more so for his wife and family. Not saying I don’t have faults, but I don’t command the salary and respect of so many required of his lofty position. I believe after careful evaluation, Damon will be let go and we will be better off in the long run for it. This isn’t a firing offense. Other than headlines that say “GA AD arrested for DUI” it brings little shame to the UGA. Mr. Evans gets the shame. He should voluntarily forfeit his salary for 1 year or donate to MADD or another similar organization. Then go to rehab. Then explain the non-wife female in his car. Who was playing at Chastain that night?

Red

Bottom line: if Damon Evans cared about UGA, he would have resigned yesterday. Now the President has to make the decision for him which will alienate some and make others happy. The ONLY decision that can be made is to fire Evans. His position demands a high standard on issues like drinking under the influence & personal character. He has been paid handsomely and has done an excellent job as AD. The fact that he has thrown all that away (and damaged his family life) is a reflection on him, not UGA. UGA has an easy, yet painful decision here. Energy needs to be directed to finding the next AD. Scary times to be a Bulldog, but tough times don’t last forever.

First, want to address all the classless fans that want to throw this man under the bus…You need to be careful throwing stones at our program or personal attacks on it…This is a huge mistake and everyone should be thankful that there was not an accident and someone wasn’t hurt…I hope people will not try and make this a racial thing, but already that has been the case, and that is very sad…Damon has done a great job for UGA and that should be taken into account, but with that being said, i don’t know if magnitude of the position and leadership he had can be maintained…He has to repair his image and whatever personal issues he has will need to be dealt with between him and his family…I don’t know how i feel about him keeping his job as we all make mistakes and it would be unfortunate to ruin his career, but what public senitment be in either keeping him or letting him resign..that would appear to be a no win situation for UGA as whatever decision is rendered will not please everyone…I hope people will not want a rush to judgement and give the university time to look at all the facts and the bottom line have the university’s best interest at heart…Whatever happesn i wish the best for Damon and his family….

No way-the lawyers would have a field day and the UGA would pay and pay big. Is his treatment to be commensurate with that of the young QB that was run out of town on a rail or, due to his position, will he be coddled? I think he has done a great job as AD but in my mind, this disqualifies him for the position immediately. Surely he has a “morals” clause or some such in the contract. Too bad but “Management sets the pattern”.
UGA must come down on equal treatment for all.

I don’t claim to be a lawyer…and I don’t play one on TV, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before so I guess that qualifies me to comment.

Legally in this country you are innocent until proven guilty. (I think that still holds true.) But in the court of public opinion and from the preponderance of evidence thus far submitted…he’s guilty. Guilty of violating state driving laws, e.g. driving under the influence, a misdemeanor, I believe. That, in and of itself, is a serious matter worthy of dismissal from a publicly funded institution. Court matters will have to play out.

Damon, I hope you have a good lawyer, because you’re going to need one, not only to get your driver’s license back, but to try and keep some assets. Your wife didn’t look too amused in that picture.

This would be serious enough to call into question Damon’s judgment to continue to lead this storied program during a time when it is already struggling with alcohol related problems. But that is not the worst problem here. People have historically imbibed alcohol, some responsibly, and some not so responsibly. I’m no hypocrit here. In my younger days I woke up a time or two not remembering how I got home.

The major problem here is credibilty, lack of judgment and character. His credibility is shot, he showed a major lack of judgment and his character is at the least questionable (And so is that of your consort).

This is not just a question of guilt or innocence. This is a public relations nightmare. If not dealt with it will call into question the integrity of the entire institution. Questions will drag on into the fall and be a MAJOR distraction to the efforts of the Georgia Bulldog football team to re-establish it’s on field credibility.

Damon, son, I’m sorry…but YOU HAVE GOT TO GO!!! You had your shot, and by all accounts you were doing a fine job, but…YOU BLEW IT.

This whole thing sticks. I count several “mistakes:” (1) Drinking and driving; (2)a married man carousing with a 28 year old girl at midnight in Atlanta; (3) describing the 28 year old girl in his news conference as “a friend” (who beleives that crock of crap?); and (4)possibly a DUI hanging in the winds.

In addition he seems to be unaware of the seriousness of his failures here. “I want to keep my job.” Well, la de da! Everyone wants to keep his job! The man obviously has a problem! Does Tiger Woods ring a bell?

It’s one thing for Joe the plumber to get cited for DUI. It’s quit another thing for a man who appeared on the Jumbotron every Saturday before 90,000 people preaching the evils of drinking and driving and then going out and drinking and driving! Plus having this “friend” in the car is actually at least as troubling if not more troubling than the drinking and driving “mistake.” Finally, his lying about who she is (yes, I am assuming she was actually something more, or perhaps less, than a friend) is extremely disturbing.

The facts need to be found out. If they turn out as I suspect they will, he should be fired.

No way should you keep your job after making a mistake like this. UGA’s Athletic Association is going to feel some pain from this either way. Oh and shouldn’t the states flagship university be the leading research university? GT does almost twice as much research and has a one billion dollar endowment. If being a flagship university was based on how many students you have….than should GSU and Georgia State be considered for “flagship” classification? No because the academics are not on par. The people in the state of Georgia really dont understand or (maybe) realize the amount and importance of the research that is going on at GT. Many technologies that will directly impact your life are being developed with your tax money, and a substantial amount of private investment as well. Its amazing really that GT is able to compete in all the major sports and continue to maintain and even improve institutional prestige. So to the state of Georgia and all the rest of the UGA fans on this blog that love to hate tech…..thank you very much for paying your taxes. Your support is one of the many reasons that GT is a top ten public university(#7 for the last two years).

A lot of food for thought. Part of the problem is this guy is a symbol for the U., that’s part of the job description, and he torpedoed that. He is not the first nor will be the last collegiate athletic official to pull something like this — I would venture to guess that many a Hall of Fame SEC coach has been up to such over the years. But the Spitzer-like setup with Evans’ advocacy against drunk driving and cleaning house of miscreants in the program are pretty hard to overcome.

For Evans not to resign, proves he is a little boy, sorry he got caught, but not sorry enough to think about the light or should I say cloud he has put over his school, not mine. The shame he has brought to the university and the laughter which all of your competitors are reveling in becuase of the hypocrisy of the situation, you would think he (Evans) would man up and resign on his on. However, he has chose to put the ball in Mr. Adams court, the man who dumped Dooley in such a classy manner. Personally if I had an employee put me in that situation and turn all the guns back at me because of something he did, I would fire him in the blink of an eye. However, we all know how classy Mr. Adams has been. So lets see what happens at the “state university”, make a real statement or stay classy (not) as has mostly been the case. I am sorry for the families, but it is the low character jerks that put their families in harms way, and then try to prey upon these sympathies to save their sorry butts. I would advise Mrs Evans to get a good divorce attorney. This probably wasn’t the first time, and won’t be the last.

Let’s be honest about something…it’s conceivable that this could be the first time that Evans drove drunk, it could also be the first time he solicited a prostitute. It’s possible that he’s one of the unluckiest guys in the world to get busted the first time he committed these offenses. But how likely is that? We’re probably talking about repeat behavior that he’s gotten by with for so long, it didn’t even occur to him that he’d ever get caught.

The AD of UGA, getting caught drunk driving with a belligerent prostitute. Forget the violations of the criminal code for a second – just the lack of judgment and common sense from someone who is one of the faces of the university is scary enough.

Is there anyone out there who seriously thinks Evans should keep his job?

Sounds like UGA is treading lightly on this one and rightfully so since it seems that Mr Evan’s priority right now is seeking the advice of attorneys….including a personal one. I’m sure he wants to protect himself both legally and professionally (the money) and his seeking of council sends a strong message to the athletic board not to make a quick decision. The last thing I’m sure that the athletic dept there wants to do is hastily fire the guy and then his case gets thrown out of court on some technicality. Can you say major LAWSUIT!??? (I knew you could). Of course, moral clauses in his contract could well come into play as well. What UGA has NOT done properly is to not suspend Mr Evans IMMEDIATELY until his case is resolved and THEN making a move. That would not only save face for the university but also send a clear message to Mr Evans. That would also give the powers that be the time to research a successor. At this point, I would like to thank the Levin School of Law at the University of Florida.

Robbie Wright, you are so on time. To even have to think or debate as to should Evans be fired or not, shows the weak mentality and moral fabric of those who would even debate it. I do not include all UGA fans here, as you can tell alot of them want him gone and should quite honestly. However, unless they want there “state university” to be labeled as hypocritical U, I would suggest they clean up this mess as soon as possible. I do not want people of Mr. Evans ilk to be in any position to influence my 15 year old, and I do not care if this is his very first time, which I will bet the mortgage it is not. I think Damon Evans should resign. With incidents like Zack Mettenberger, the AD has to set a higher standard than the players who have been dismissed from the University. I would say the same for Mark Richt if he were found in this situation, but then again he wouldn’t be. With the money he’s making from the state of Georgia, Evans can afford a cab–really bad judgment that put others lives in jeopardy and cannot be excused

And what does it say about who a man chooses as his “friend” when this idiotic woman gets out of the car and argues with the trooper to the point of getting arrested herself. Is DUI a bad thing? Yes. Is it something that almost all of us do at one time or another? Sadly, yes. Should we ruin a great young man’s career over it? I don’t think so. After all, we are a nation of forgivers, and Damon has shown us nothing but good things so far. Everyone makes mistakes, but few of us have to pay a huge price for them. I don’t see how this mistake makes him a lesser AD…and in fact I think the lessons learned from this can only help him personally and professionally. Sometimes we have to get caught before we decide that the actions we have or were taking are not in our best interest. Who’s to say that other great ADs or coaches, players, whatever…haven’t been in similar situations but not caught? The justice system is designed to help us learn a lesson…not to ruin our lives.

“. He earned two degrees from the University of Georgia, receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance in 1992 and a master’s of education in sports management in 1994.” Mr. Evans’ degrees from UGA.

”But just before he was booked into Atlanta City Jail on a DUI charge, Evans was “crying uncontrollably,” said Trooper M. Cabe, who pulled over Evans’ 2009 BMW after he meandered across the center line of Roswell Road near Chastain Drive at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday.”
Quoted from the article: “Incident report: Evans tried to bargain his way out of DUI arrest”
By Christian Boone, Atlanta Constitution, July 2, 2010. http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/incident-report-evans-tried-563333.html

The Athletic Director of UGA makes over half a million dollars a year. He has two degrees awarded from UGA as documented above from the website.

UGA constantly brags that it is a “flagship” institution, a “research university of national repute” and numerous other unjustified but glowing statements promoting it and its sports programs. Only one sided propaganda are mostly posted and written about it, but rarely any negative true facts dlsputing that propaganda.
The above quoted statement from the AJC article is an example of the character of this two time degree winner, Mr. Damon Evans, from UGA who earns over half a million dollars a year while many less fortunate individuals have lost their homes, jobs and are on public welfare.

Repeated propaganda by the chief propagandist Tom Jackson and his many henchmen and henchwomen at UGA have the effect of brainwashing a gullible and unwitting public with lies rather than the sordid truth about its failed programs.

UGA is a corrupt cesspool, and part of the truth of it is the sorry quotation from this individual above who was awarded not one but two degrees from this sordid institution, all corrupted by the commercial sports program which must be removed from public property immediately.

The officials at UGA would have the gullible public believe that Mr. Evans was some kind of saint, when in fact, he is a cowardly loser seeking to have an officer of the law look the other way to his transgressions so he doesn’t receive any bad publicity which might contradict the constant barrage of propaganda from the office of Mr. Jackson.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said we should evaluate people for the quality of their character, not the color of their skin. Evidently the UGA Athletic Assn., headed by UGA president Adams, did not follow this dictum and even UGA did not award degrees on such a basis since it is very likely this is not the first time such improper conduct has been covered up.

UGA is a corrupt cesspool. Shame, shame , shame on you Tom Jackson and others for seeking to fool the gullible members of the public and taxpayers who foot the bill for this public disgrace of an institution. The problems of Mr. Evans are only a small part of a much larger problem of lack of credibility of this failed institution. Many other sordid examples could be provided too. One can be sure that the entire incident report on the arrest of the Athletic Director will not be posted by Tom Jackson front and center on the UGA website forever for all to see and “brag” about will it?

P.S. Notice also the deafening silence of the thousands of UGA professors in departments from law to history, from journalism to biology, from mathematics to agriculture, from physics to physical education. Cowardly, blatant, insidious, lying silence. Shame, shame, shame on all of you gutless cowards who might as well also be bought and paid for with dirty money.

Winfield J. Abbe

The other day the AJC had an article describing how a Superior Court Judge in Georgia was caught having sex with a public defender in a car in an abandoned subdivision about two years ago.
Do you know where that judge went to school? He is a graduate of Terry College at UGA and the UGA law school., even a former Air Force Colonel! People have been brainwashed by the lies about this sordid, disgusting institution.
By the way, both of them resigned and, so far as I know, no punishment has been dispensed to them although there were over 200 cases before this judge and public defender after this incident and they violated all meaningless ethical rules with impunity. This is what the dumbed down public gets for allowing corrupt judicial officials to police themselves.
In the corrupt state of Georgia, all citizens are considered suspects and criminals before the fact; but judges and lawyers are virtually never called to account for their crimes against citizens and society, mostly in secret.

Adams must be taking lessions in leadership from obama. obama thought
it was more important to stay in DC and do what he does best, blame other people and give speeches. The crisis began on April 20th and obama
finally had time to visit the site May 28th. You don’t want to know all the “social” events he had plenty of time to attend.

Oh, I forgot obama doesn’t get involved in a crisis
until Rahm Emanuel figures out to use it to gain more government control. In Rahm’s unforgettable words, “ you never want a crisis to go to waste.”

Now a bomb explodes in Athens and Adam’s thinks it’s more important
to remain on vacation than to return to Athens and take charge of this bomb shell.
Ok Mike, you don’t need to come back to Athens to do half your job, just let your fingers do the walking, call Damon and tell him you are outa here MF.

More important than firing Evans, Adams needs to be in Athens having his staff
compile of candidates for AD. Adams needs to be there making calls to see who is available that he SHOULD know personally. But that’s just me.

He can no longer be a effective leader for our student athletes as they will be able to challenge his integrity and know that they one up him in that category. Yes, forgo your undeserved salary increase the the financially strapped university never should have given you in the first place. Then a year or two down the road, when no one is looking, you get it back. Seems entirely fair and consistent win at all cost M. Adams lives by.

Bill,

You have no choice. If Bama fired Mike Price for less serious transgressions in which no laws were broken then Adams has to fire Evans as in yesterday to avoid further embarrassment to a fine school like UGA. His conduct is not worthy of a program like UGA and he has to go. Otherwise if he is kept other programs and rival fans will look at Georgia as the laughingstock of the SEC. Can’t you just see UF and Auburn and UT fans placing red panties on the tops of poles and showing them at games to further humiliate UGA?

With the beat downs the gators have put on the bullpups the last few years, i’m surpirsed he isn’t doing heroin. a little drinking and driving, cheating on the wife, bribing a cop and crying his eyes out are all understandable under the circumstances.

Honestly, that ill advised press conference probably did more harm than good. Now that the details of the arrest are out, it makes Mr. Evans look defiant if anything. He must have been too drunk to realize his behavior or thought the police wouldn’t release the report. Heck, I don’t know what he was thinking but whomever allowed the press conference needs to be reprimanded as well!

“Just a Friend” my foot. I won’t believe it if the Georgia people don’t demand him gone by Sunday evening. What’s with this president, anyway? Vacation? The school is obviously in a crisis- get your booty back and handle it, IMMEDIATELY. I can’t believe the proud Georgia folk are tolerating this mess one bit.

Every game that UGA plays in any sport will have red panties thrown on the field. UGA needs to do the right thing and fire him.

Given the political correctness run amuck of today Evans probably won’t be able to keep his job. This is just the modern day equivalent of hunting witches. Today’s witch’s make mistakes and are crucified at the altar of hypocrisy by the holier than thou mobs. BTW Mark Bradley, do you want us to really believe that you have never driven a car when you might have had just one too many? How about the rest of you? Is it a smart thing to do…of course not. You should pay the penalty, suffer a bit of embarrassment and learn from your mistake. You should not have to commit career Hari Kari. But no in today’s world we just can’t have that sort of behavior from an AD, now if you want to be a Republican President that is a horse of a different color.

More embarrassing than the fact that we now know our admins are human, is the fact that I come on here and see old men slinging the mud and bringing down the names of their own university that he supports.

Do you men, or little boys rather from the way you are acting, realize how DUMB you sound? So childish…

The fact is, you folks that state “I am not donating anymore” probably don’t donate to begin with, and if you do, you should use the brain given to you and realize that Damon Evans trashed the University, and the University did not trash him. Now, if in the upcoming days our admins decide to keep him, then yes, you can be upset enough to stop your donations. But, to say you are stopping donations because a single man made a decision that you are letting define the whole school for you, is very small minded. I seriously doubt my medical school acceptance will be denied because Damon Evans brought down the quality of my education.

You can keep your money if you can’t think for yourself.

For all the folks supporting other schools, your rivalry disgusts me, and if you can’t think for yourself, and you believe your school is flawless and without blame, then you have wasted many years of life not learning to be rational.

These comments disgusts me, and I am not not embarrassed to wear red and black because I know that one man’s decisions in a higher position than my graduate studies, does not define who I am as a student. Call me a mutt, call me inbred, call me what you may, but when you continue to act like a bunch of child bullies on a playground, I will be sure to call you to my office when it is time for your pap smear. Grow up, because we sure are doing a better job than you are.

What a sad day for Georgia. Damon and UGA have been a big running joke on sports talk radio shows in Nashville for the past 3 days. Adams needs to end this ASAP, and put distance between the University and Evans. To do so makes this much more of a Damon Evans issue and less of a UGA issue. The longer he remains the AD, the bigger the “black cloud” becomes. I agree this is an opportinity for him to improve as a person. He will have to do that somewhere else. He has lost his ability to effectively lead at UGA.
Damon please resign and save UGA and it’s fans further shame. Your work here is done.

Damon, was the tryst with the Fuhrmann chick really worth a half million a year? You could’ve done a whole lot better than that. Live and learn. Looks like more Fuhrmann-type chicks for you down the road. maybe. unless you become born again. then who knows.

To compare this case to Gwinnett County Commissioner Charles Bannister is absurd. Mr. Bannister denied driving under the influence. Your boy Damon all but confessed to a DUI. Besides, Mr. Bannister had no one in the car with him. As we all know, Damon had a woman that was NOT his wife. Someone in Gwinnett had it out for Mr. Bannister, but Damon did this all by himself.

YES you read that right.. 420 k a year plus the 110 k increase July 1st. THATS JUST HIS SALARY THE TAXPAYERS PAY ! Looks like I need to get a job there. I could stand 12 furlough days a year if I had that salary. THAT IS THE MOST OUTRAGOUS CRAP I HAVE READ. FIRE HIS BUTT. Then maybe his wife and kids will take whats left after his party night with the bright red panties….A total disgrace. GO DAWGS.. naw nevermind… GO NOLES………….

That GSP trooper should receive a commendation from Governor Perdue!

Evans should receive a “pink slip.” He’s not self-employed like Tiger Woods or elected like Bill Clinton.
