Evans isn’t out of the woods yet

Damon Evans, seen here with Mark Richt, will have to do more than apologize. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So, did Damon Evans do enough in his news conference late Thursday to save his job?

He struck the expected contrite tone, apologized for the shame he has brought on the University of Georgia and his family with his arrest on DUI charges, promised to learn from his “grave, grave” mistake, and thanked UGA President Michael Adams for standing by him.

Somehow, just learning a tough lesson doesn’t seem enough, does it? And it should be noted that Adams said in a statement released by UGA that he “will reserve further action pending a full review by staff and legal counsel,” so Evans isn’t out of the woods yet.

Frankly, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t have to do a lot more than just apologize. UGA athletes arrested on alcohol-related charges must sit out at least 10 percent of a season. If Evans is going to get to keep his job, it would seem only fair that he at the very least forgo that $110,000 salary increase that went into effect today.

Beyond that, some sort of outreach program aimed at restoring his credibility with UGA students, employees and supporters would also seem a must.

And there’s still the possibility that the backwash from all this could result in Evans and/or Adams concluding that he no longer can effectively lead the UGA Athletic Association.

After all, he is in a position of responsibility over more than 600 student athletes at a university that’s put a big emphasis on trying to stem an almost endemic underage drinking problem. And on top of that he was the public face of those don’t-drink-and-drive messages that run on the scoreboard at Sanford Stadium in the fall.

DUI is a hot-button issue. You never know who might be coming over the center line straight at you or one of your loved ones out on the road late at night.

It doesn’t matter that Evans has been an excellent financial steward of the UGA Athletic Association’s $85 million budget since taking over the athletic director’s job six years ago today, managing to keep the program among the few in the country that are highly profitable in tough economic times.

While the bottom line usually rules in modern big-time college football, institutions like the University of Georgia are very sensitive to a public relations nightmare like having Mr. “If You Drink and Drive You Lose” accused of doing exactly what he’s warned UGA fans against.

So when that Atlanta DUI arrest mug shot of Evans looking more than a bit worse for wear hit TV and the Internet Thursday, the odds of him getting out of this with his career intact grew rather long.

All the facts of Evans’ case still aren’t known. And it has yet to be adjudicated. DUI cases don’t always stick, as has been proved this week in Gwinnett County with County Commission Chairman Charles Bannister.

But you’ve got to wonder how a guy like Evans, a graduate of UGA’s prestigious Terry College of Business and one of the youngest ADs in the nation when named to the position at 34, got himself into a situation like this.

Frankly, he seemed so much smarter than that.

Evans will not be disciplined. He is black therefore immune. He should be made to crawl on his knees to Mettenberger and pay all fees for the young man to attend the college of his choice. Personally, I vote for giving his wife one free shot with a .270 to explain the meaning of fidelity to him.

Fire him. He will never be able to be a respectable AD in the minds of college kids, UGA fans, and the rest of the world after what he did. I’m not saying he should be perfect, but he should have put himself beyond reproach when in his position.

we all make mistakes in life,Damon Evans made a bad mistake and it will most likely cost him is job.Lots of people say what happened with second chances.well sometimes you do something in life and it’s to big for a second chance.at my job if i had done what Damon did and it came out in the papper i would be terminated for bring a negitive presence on myself and for the company i work at.i just don’t see how Damon Evans can discipline athlete’s abd lead UGA after this.Dr. Adams is on vacation and I’m sure he will handle this as soon as he get back and meets with the board of trustee’s and lawyers.Sad that Damon put himself in this positition. If it was just a D.U.I that would be one thing but I’m afraid this woman will be proven to be more than just a friend.

Listening to Damon Evans’ press conference last night reminded me of the recent Tiger Woods press conference. His credibility is shot, and he needs to go NOW!!!

It’s sad. If you know you’ve done something wrong yet still trying to “lawyer up” to save your job then that just shows the selfishness of Damon Evans. He’s still out for himself. Sure he apologized but if he knows what’s best for the University and its future, he’d step down.

Also, don’t get me wrong. He is/was a good AD but his image is tarnished and I don’t want his past to keep “haunting” UGA and its Ahtletic program. He can be a good AD elsewhere.

A simple DUI and only one woman?? What’s the problem? I was drunk, had sex with two women at one time and made room service charges on my University of Alabama credit card. Alabama fired me. I should have been a bulldog. Looks like I would have received a promotion.

Bugkiller…watch yourself! It’s usually the self-righteous guys like yourself that “karma” bites in the a$$ first! Evans should resign the day after that low life governor of SC. resigns! Until that happens, pump your breaks!

Robbie Wright, you are so on time. To even have to think or debate as to should Evans be fired or not, shows the weak mentality and moral fabric of those who would even debate it. I do not include all UGA fans here, as you can tell alot of them want him gone and should quite honestly. However, unless they want there “state university” to be labeled as hypocritical U, I would suggest they clean up this mess as soon as possible. I do not want people of Mr. Evans ilk to be in any position to influence my 15 year old, and I do not care if this is his very first time, which I will bet the mortgage it is not. What was that others girl name? Was it Mandy?

There’s no question he should be fired. He is damaged goods and can not be looked up to anymore. Talk about hypocritical; he is paid to lead by example, and this his how he leads. You drink, you drive, you lose your AD job!
Fired him as soon as possible and move on to other AD.

You have to feel sorry for DE. The AD job has to be his “Dream Job” and to go along with the “Dream Team” of next year, how can you walk away? If, you put the School first, then it’s a easy decision. If you put your interest first, then you stay until somebody else makes the decision. Forgiveness is one thing but how to you explain to young men just out of highschool that they are responcible for their actions and let the AD get by with “I’m Sorry”?

I think Damon Evans should resign. With incidents like Zack Mettenberger, the AD has to set a higher standard than the players who have been dismissed from the University. I would say the same for Mark Richt if he were found in this situation, but then again he wouldn’t be. With the money he’s making from the state of Georgia, Evans can afford a cab–really bad judgment that put others lives in jeopardy and cannot be excused

None of us have the right to judge, that is up to someone of a higher authority. However, Damon’s actions are likely in violation of his contract (most employment contracts have clauses for situations like this) and I will be shocked if he is not relieved of his duties after Adams has a chance to meet with counsel.

He has a beautiful wife and 2 very precious daughters. What a shame to make them endure this kind of drama.

July 2nd, 2010

Damon Evans had the audacity to sit there and say in a press conference that this woman is just “a friend”. Does this man think people are stupid? In the police report he had a pair of red panties in his lap. I guess we can only logically assume they belong to his “friend”. And what does it say about who a man chooses as his “friend” when this idiotic woman gets out of the car and argues with the trooper to the point of getting arrested herself. If she is a “friend” you have poor judgement and taste in your friends Mr. Evans. Like the old Chinese proverb says if a man lays down with dogs he wakes up with fleas.

Mike Price,

Actually Price never even had sex with the strippers. They basically just came to his room and hung out with him so that they could milk some money from him. They weren’t going to do that old man and everyone acknowledged there was no sex. It makes his transgressions look even that much less serious than Damon Evans who could have killed someone. And Price lost his job for it.

If Bama fired Mike Price for much less serious transgressions then UGA has to fire Evans. They have to. If not then this university has no shame, no credibility, and would be looked on with derision by the rest of the sec.
