Quarterback Aaron Murray already has a year in Mark Richt's offensive system. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
So far the preseason estimations of Mark Richt’s team have varied wildly, though most predictions have Georgia improving modestly over last season but still behind Florida in the SEC East.
And then there’s Tom Poisal of the highly respected philsteele.com, who says “Georgia is poised to re-take the throne in the SEC East from Florida” this year. Poisal says the key game is South Carolina. “If the Dawgs survive that test in the sauna that is Columbia in September, they will be off and running barring injuries.”
Poisal’s appraisal of the Dawgs addresses the concerns of an inexperienced quarterback in Aaron Murray and the transition to a new defense.
He thinks this being Murray’s second year in the program will help. “Expect statistics mirroring David Greene [in his redshirt freshman year] and Matthew Stafford’s 2nd year on the Georgia campus at minimum. Murray has a much better arm than Greene but not as much as Stafford. His mobility is better than both and his intangibles are said to be reminiscent of Greene.”
As for the defense, Poisal says “we are talking about a defense that gave up more passing touchdowns than any other SEC team while also creating the fewest turnovers in league play. There HAS to be improvement in those numbers this year given the athleticism Georgia possesses on the defensive side of the ball.” And the fact that opponents won’t know what to expect from Todd Grantham’s 3-4 scheme “should soften the blow of any potential learning-curve that the Bulldogs may encounter, especially early in the year.”
Plus, Poisal says, “ask any coach breaking in a 1st year quarterback what he wants to go along with the rookie and he will probably say a veteran offensive line, good running game and great special teams.” And Georgia has all that. Plus, he says, a schedule “tailor-made for a 1st year quarterback in the SEC.”
To sum it all up, he says, “The team you see in the final third of the season will not resemble the team that began the year. Murray will be entrenched as the QB of the present and future, the playbook will open, and all the pieces will fall into place giving Georgia an SEC East Championship and potentially more.”
Not bad for a team picked by the Orlando Sentinel to be only the 64th best in the country.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT LEARNING CURVE?
Talking about the defense with the Macon Telegraph, Richt conceded there’s going to be “a learning curve” but noted that “the 3-4 is a good aggressive, attacking style and it’s one where we have enough personnel to run it effectively. The question is, how well will we do it, how many mistakes will we make along the way, and when we make the mistakes, what’s it going to cost us? On the other end, hopefully we’re going to pressure people enough to get them to turn the ball over more than we did a year ago.”
That’s the key: how much Georgia can flip its turnover ratio from last year’s abysmal numbers.
A HEISMAN DARK HORSE?
Alabama’s Mark Ingram is the preseason pick to repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner, but as last year showed the favorite frequently doesn’t win. So what dark horse Heisman contenders could emerge?
Collegefootballnews.com says: “Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green is the first name that comes to mind. Green hauled in 53 passes for 808 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore in 2009, doing so in a rather average offense. In 2010, the only question mark in the Bulldog offensive puzzle is the quarterback. Granted, that’s a pretty big question mark, but Aaron Murray should be able to work off of his running game to get Green the ball in key spots. Green has the talent, it’s just a matter of him getting enough touches.”
Amen.

If we make it to the SEC Championship game, I don’t see a problem with beating ‘Bama. They’re going to be off this year on defense and we’ll pound them until they try to stop the run, then blow them out with the receiving corps. They’ll score some points on us, but not enough to make it close.
We have to survive that hellhle, Columbia. That’s got to be the hottest I have ever been two years ago.

It’s a little too early for me to be that optimistic about our 2010 Dogs. Murray is pretty young and our defense still must shake off several years of what I like to call the Willie effect. This effect causes a lack of tackling, few turnovers and giving up the big play over an dover again. The dogs are taking their medication but it may take longer for them to fully recover from Willie. USC is the litmus test regarding our 2010 Dogs!!!

2010 OUTLOOK: With Heisman candidate Joshua Nesbitt returning at quarterback, the Yellow Jackets will contend for another ACC title. Nesbitt leads an option attack that will again be explosive, and the new-look defense under Al Groh should be improved. Look for runner Anthony Allen and wideout Stephen Hill to emerge as stars: they replace Jonathan Dwyer and Demaryius Thomas, two of four juniors who left for the NFL

Fellow Dog fans, we need to get real here. If we need to worry about getting past SC early, then suffice it to say that we probably aren’t going to be all that great. JS…………you don’t know much about Richt if that’s your stance……Murray wouldn’t have started last year if he was the second coming. He was a true freshman and Cox had been in the system 3-4 years. Richt, being a passed over second string collge QB himself, was going to give Cox every benefit of the Doubt. Yes, I think it’s a “weakness” he has for not putting the best player on the field to give us a chance to win, but that’s just the way he’s runs ‘his” team. Murray will surprise this year.

If Aaron Murray has a “much better arm than David Greene” then we’re home free. But I’ve never heard that before. Also I question the reasoning that other teams’ adjustment to our new defensive alignment will offset our own learning curve. But I hope he’s right. I don’t think Ingram can repeat his monster year. But I have no objective reason for saying that other than that he will share a lot of carries with a great back.. Just mysticism and wishful thinking I guess. If AJ stays healthy and plays up to his potential look out.I do appreciate the Bulletin Board motivation from the Sentinel and Paul Finebaum.

June 30th, 2010
1:25 pm
Green had a soft pass that was very catchable and often times, it was caught. He also had touch. He also had accuracy. He did throw a nice, deep ball.
Murray has that cannon arm, second maybe to MS but who cares? He can throw on the run, he can roll out and he hums it. He also can throw into the lanes that open up on the line and here is where we might see some issues that are due to inexperience. In this scenario ……….. he needs to know where folks are, like LBs and HIS fullbacks, etc
Cox’s biggest issue was that he was slow. He could not move and folks pinned their ears back and here they came. He did display with inconsistency, a nice, accurate pass. He had a tendancy to panic and that was his Achilles heel. He cost up at least two game and mybe he won two. We must do far better.

Bottom line…the QB is totally inexperienced in college game action and no one knows what’s gonna happen. And usually, that kind of big ? at that particular position is not a good predictor for consistant success throughout the season game in and game out. Look at Peyton Manning…and you would have to assume here that Aaron Murray is equal to that level…even he struggled a bit his first year and was up and down and Tennessee had a very mediocre season that year. What, 7 wins?? But the schedule is kinder for the Dawgs and an 8-4 season would not be out of the question.

BobDog,
While I have and continue to pick UGA to win the East, its a little early to say that “beating bama shouldn’t be a problem.” Believe me, it is a problem. IF we get to ATL, Bama will be by far the most complete team we will have faced. Any inexperience on Bama’s D won’t be an issue in game 13 of the season. Do I think its impossible? No, but we have a lot to accomplish before we can be confident playing the Tide. Their backs are more established. Their qb is a proven commodity. We have an edge in the kicking game and a slight one at O-line, but the balance of the units all favor the Tide. The most glaring discrepency may be the DL. Marcel Dareus is a beast and we really don’t know how well or how poorly our front three will play. Right now you’d have to put Bama as a 8 to 10 point favorite at the Dome. I’d like to think that we can get that down to under 5 by the time the game comes around, but again, we’ve got a long way to go. However, for this team just getting to ATL will be an accomplishment we should be very happy about, when it happens.

Nobody really knows, that’s why you’ve got some analysts putting us at the bottom and others at the top. There is some solid talent on this Georgia team, but there are just as many questions. Will the offensive line that allowed us to pound the rock at the end of last season show up from day one, or will it take 3-4 games before they get it into gear. My take on this OL – prove it. Shows us how good people think you are. I’m not one who thinks they’re one of the best in college.
Defensively, the guy to watch is Justin Anderson. At 6′5″ 325 lbs., Bean could be a beast anchoring the middle of our line. Just as easily, he could be a flop. I have faith that Grantham will have this group attacking the ball and creating T.O.’s. I expect an upgrade on that side of the ball.
I’m one that thinks we’ll go 9-3… if the train starts to really roll, maybe 10-2. All I care about is stomping the Vols and putting another beat down on Tech. The rest is gravy.

No problem beating Bama? Gonna blow them out? Won’t even be close?
Thanks for the comedy. I needed some comedic relief today. BTW, the Bammers defense is so deep that a new starter at defensive end Marcel Dareus is projected as the #2 draft pick in 2011 by Todd McShay of ESPN and the #7 pick of the nfl 2011 draft by the other ESPN draft analyst Tom Lemming. They also have 6′4 260 lb linebacker Donta Hightower who was freshman all america and started 14 games in 08 but missed most of last season due to a knee injury. He also counts as a new starter even though he really isn’t. Their new NT played as many snaps as Terrance Cody and had more tackles. Most of their new starters are guys who like these 3 played in the regular rotation and have boatloads of experience and were part time starters at least some of the last 2 seasons. They will be even more athletic than last year. Good luck running the ball against those guys.

Gators are LOADED with athletes…..Will they be a team, who knows…….As a Dawg fan, I am smart enough to look at the recruiting classes the last couple of years at Florida to know they are reloading……a couple of things they might have to overcome…..they had a heavy dose of dependency of Tebow making that offense work. Having great athlete’s doesn’t mean the offense will work. The other is no Charlie Strong. What did he mean to that team, also they lost some experience on that side of the ball.

we may lose to SC or arkansas, but i doubt we will lose both. imo our biggest concern isn’t a redshirt freshman QB but rather stopping the run; we’re thin and inexperienced across our front 7 on D, and though i think houston and washington will put great pressure on QB’s, we may have some trouble stopping the run, especially early in the season. i believe the secondary will emerge as the strongest part of our defense.
fortunately, our two big early season tests–USC and arkansas–are against teams that don’t run the ball especially well. that’s the only reason i think we stand a chance (less than 50%, but still a chance with a break or two) of winning both games and rolling into JAX undefeated.
dawg fans should be positive and optimistic (if not “delusional”) about 2010. it won’t be smooth sailing, but we’ll be better this year than we were last.

Innocent Bystander, David Greene actually stated that Murray has a stronger arm than DG had in college. Remember though, Greene was noted for his touch on the ball, not his arm strength.
Time will tell how much mobility, arm strength, game-smarts, etc. that Murray has, in comparison to Greene. All Greene ever did was WIN and he did it a lot. If Murray is anything close to Greene, I think we’ll all be very happy.

I agree with the comment that we will never be on the level Florida has been the 5 or 6 years if “we are worried about SC” if SC is the pivital game then we still have a long way to go! Florida blows SC out of the water every year…I know…I know…. it’s aways a toss up…they play us tuff yada yada yada…bottom line is we should be able to crush sc….half the players on the roster are ball players from Georgia that we or Tech didn’t recruit. Bottom line if we expect to be playing for NC…teams like SC and Ark shouln’t be an issue.

with regard to Murray’s arm strength…..ask jeff george if arm strength is the only factor to consider.
Murray seems like a well rounded QB, better than average arm strength, touch, mobility, smart. I will take that over a gunslinger any day. AKA David Greene, Joe Montana, Drew Brees, you name them. College or Pro, they tend to be way more sucessful than the guys with the cannons who cannot move or think.
This team will perform way better than last years. Look forward to the Dawgs playing and shutting some haters mouths and some writers pens.
I like our chances to have a great season 11-2.Maybe 13-1.
Will Georgia beat Florida? Win the East? Who knows. But they will be better than last years team. That does not bode well for Tech. They probably wont get a ring again this year.

Murray delivers the ball to a place that only the receiver has a shot at it. They must catch it with their hands and keep their eyes on the ball. I finally got to see some of the film from the G-Day, saw Murray zip one to Charles who started running before securing the ball which would had been a nice pickup. Also saw the interception and it wasn’t what some numbskulls on this site had been making it out to be. The protection broke down and he was hit in the shins when he was stepping up by a guy crawling towards him. It wasn’t anything like some of those so called fans were making it sound like. He wasn’t trying to make a superman type of play. He was trying to deliver the ball underneth, in front of a LB, exactly what the D was giving him..

JB, I am not sure that you Richt as well as you think you do.
Are you seriously suggesting that he would put his job, his family, his coaches, and 100 other player at risk because he had some “back-up envy” left over from 20 yrs ago?
Him not playing the player that gives the team the best chance to win can only be explained but one of two things. No other explaination works.
1. He knows the players abilities and evaluates the best chance of winning exactly as you do , BUT chooses to lesson the chances of succeeding in the game.
2. He has a different criterai of evaluating the players, and calculates the chances of winning on a different criteria that you do, therefore his action while in his mind maximize the chance of victory, it doesnt agree with what you think you would do hypothetically.
Now of those two, which one is more logical?

I think the server ate my message. Anybody else have that happen? SC shut down Stafford and Moreno by loading the box with 7-8 and blitzing like crazy. Too many bodies to block and they put a lot of pressure on the QB–a 1st rounder. Interestingly, they did the same thing with Cox, daring him to go up field and he ate them alive! Smith’s light speed reverse helped, too. Anyway, I don’t like the talk about bringing Murray along slowly! Put him in the ULL game and establish the UGA passing attack first! If we go into SC with the slightest bit of hesitation about Murray being able to take them deep, they will load the box and try to shut us down like they did in 07-08! Murray is going to have to grow up quick if we want to be champions. After the Spring game, you can bet SC and ARK are going to use this strategy–force Murray to beat them with his arm, by throwing everything at our running game and enough bodies to pressure Murray. He has the technology; imho, the sooner he shows them who’s boss, the more effective the running game will be. I would love to see Murray throw it 50 times against ULL.

“If we get past USC, we will go to Jax undefeated.” Really? Is someone forgetting Arkansas the week after Carolina? That game is daunting. I say we will gel in the first three games, and the fact that we are in transition will cost us an early game. But, our team will get better as the season goes on. The article is spot-on. The late season team will have little resemblance to the team at the season’s start.

We’ll also lose alot of seniors, including Clint Boling, Shaun Chapas, Chris Davis, Darryl Gamble, Brandon Wood, Kris Durham, Quinton Banks, Akeem Dent, Vance Cuff, Kiante Tripp, Demarus Dobbs, etc. I know we’ll be young at QB this year, and we’re learning a new defense, but the time to go for it, is always now!

Take um one at a time, and play every one of them like its for all the marbles, cause some times you look back and say, if we had only won that game. The year we finished at 2nd in the final BCS poll, just one game, and we could have easily been playing Ohio State for the NC, instead of LSU playing them. Skipper,
The suggestion that beating Florida is all it takes to win the East is a common misconception. The fact is that the 3 times that CMR’s teams won the East, UF won the game. In the 2 years that we beat UF we were not the East representative. In fact it can be argued that the key to UT winning the East is UGA beating UF, because that it what has happened in the past. UGA’s futility in the UF game has had a greater impact in UGA’s success on a national level than it has on our success within the conference. BTW: In the other 4 games we lost to UF, 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2009 we would not have won the East even if we had beaten UF. Ergo, there has not been one season under Richt that the UF game result was decisive in whether UGA went to ATL or not. However, beating UF in either 2002 and 2005 would have greatly enhanced our chances of playing in the big game.

Just want to know which “great” running team it will be that is going to run over the Dawgs early in the 2010 season. Will it be that notorious and always dangerous USCe running game that a what, #91 last year in rushing? Or will it be that ever dominating rushing attack of Arkansas that was ranked #81? No, no, my bad, it will be that road game to MSU, though I do worry a bit about that game, that will have the Dawgs crying.
Not saying UGA will be undefeated through September-early October, but just tell me which vaunted running game is going to exploit UGA’s supposed “susceptible” D?

NC Bulldawg- well said!
When you look at our schedule it is very favorable…a couple of early tests SC, Ark, maybe Miss St then soft until UF.
Grantham will have the benefit in the early games of oposing teams having little if any game film on the Dawgs D until they grow up.
The Gators meanwhile replace not only their heisman winning QB, but one of their top WRs in R.Cooper, top TE, and 6 starters on D.
They also have to play @Bama, LSU, Miss St back to back to back before getting a week off before UGA which they will need.
All the talk about how bad UGA is going to be is fine I get it the Dawgs have to prove it on the field, but anyone who thinks UF isn’t capable of losing 3-4 games is fooling themselves.

We have the facilities,we have the fan base, we have the recruiting base. How much longer will we put up with this mediocrity of leadership and coaching?
Look at Fla & Ala. Both schools took off when they got the correct leader/coach. I am sick of this. I know CMR is a good man, a good person, a great sunday school teacher. I am happy that he is! I am not happy with 2nd or 3rd place in the SEC east. Hire a COACH!

UGA actually has a simple task in the new season: beat Florida.
If UGA beat Florida, you are most likely the EAST champ. If UGA lose Florida, you are most likely not the EAST champ.
If UGA beat Florida and wins SEC champ game, you are most likely in the NC hunt. If UGA lose to Florida, you are most likely not in the NC hunt.

Dawg Daz, agree with everything you say, and I believe the film shows that the receiver was actually in traffic, screened from the ball ….but I think Murray also threw back across the middle of the field (into the crowd) on a play where protection had broken down. Not a wise decision and that is the cause for concern.
All that being said, I’m not worried. I think the kid realized before the play ended he blew that one. Lesson learned. Better there than at Columbia on 9/11.

Other reasons I hear on why Richt, who’s finished in the top 10 16 of last 19 seasons, not preseason top 10.
1) Turnovers
That’s a myth. Vandy was best in lowest turnovers in SEC, they went 2-10. Many of the best teams in nation when it comes to not committing turnovers, went 5-7. This is a myth by misinformed people.
2) Penalties
Richt is 25-2 when UGA commits 10+ penalties, aggression is good, Meyer ranked #93 in penalties went 13-1. Meyer’s 2 natl champ years, gators were horrible in penalties. This one’s a myth too by uninformed Richt critics who don’t like facts and reality.
3) rUSHING
MSU was #1 in SEC, went 5-7.

You got something agin rednecks? I’m from Watkinsville, and yes, Mr. Observor, I can read and I can write. As for the issue at hand, that is, the Dogs, I can only believe they will be better. I watched the replay last night of the Arkansas-Georgia game from last year, and found myself appalled at the absolutely miserable play of the defense. The kicking game, those directional kicks out of bounds, and a lost coaching staff on defense. The penalties were abominable, twice on efforts at a two point conversion. It is a wonder and marvel that the team won as many games as they did. Watching that game last night, I said, coaches should have been fired before the next week. At least, as far as Dog fans are concerned, the good news is that we shouldn’t have to watch those same mistakes week in and week out. This entry will will probably be deleted, as most of mine are, but there goes. The humble and ignorant entry of one from Observor’s Redneck Triangle.

Hello UGA is Just Fine! If you are happy with this lack of coaching, this lack of emotion, if you are happy then you probably will be happy with what we have. I am not happy with our coaching. I believe that our players reflect their coach–no emotion, no excitment. When we get beat by much lesser teams every year, something is wrong!
I don’t measure a coach by national championships, I measure a coach by whether he can coach.
CMR is flat out not a coach. Do you ever hear of a school interested in stealing CMR away? What abour anyone trying to steal one of our asst coaches? Why is that?
I am very happy rooting for UGA which I have done since the early 60’s. You should take your blinders off, quit settling for mediocrity, and demand that we do what it takes to be in the national title hunt EVERY year. We need to demand more instead of paying an inept coach millions while he is on the job training. Also, everyone needs luck. Good coaches and programs make their own luck. CMR is not at FSU anymore where he could run any play and it would work against the inferior athletes on his schedule. In the SEC everyone has athletes. Coaching must prevail!

College Football News on any receiver winning the Heisman:
“Forget about anyone who’s not a quarterback or a running back. Over the last ten years, the only players to crack the top five who played anything other than quarterback or running back were Suh last year, Michael Crabtree in 2008 (fifth), and Larry Fitzgerald in 2003 (second). There isn’t a Heisman-worthy receiver out there at the moment going into this season, and if Crabtree could only get 116 Heisman points in 2008 (Bradford won with 1,726), there’s no chance a Ryan Broyles of Oklahoma or Keith Smith of Purdue will come within 100 miles of consideration.”

JB that’s not really an answer to my question. Murray turning out to be the greatest QB in UGA history has nothing to do with it. Thats no proof he was a better at that time last year, is it? And Only IF Richt believe that he was better at the time, and played Cox anyway (which defies logic), would that prove the accusation I was questioning.
Now, is playing a guy who might not be the best chance to win at the time as a tradeoff to get him more ready for the future is an whole nuther deal. I would argue that Richt trying to win the game at hand, even at the expense of experience tomorrow is far more legit of a complaint or a weekness. Some have argued that (although they tend not to be able to admit the trying to win part).
You got me on Evans. I theorize that with Boykin at CB, who did get badly burned many times last year, they thought Evans was a some experience. Perhaps they thought his leadership outweighed his weaknesses. To just KNOW that Rmabo wouldnt have struggle all year is far from a given too.
I do know this. Evans didnt play out of some misguided “loyalty”.. The aformentioned Boykin playing ahead of older players, or for that matter the many examples of freshman playing over upperclassman prove that the loyalty therory doesn’t exist. If it does, it certainly seems to be quite random.

South Carolina has a coach who has a knack for having his teams hang around and giving them a chance to win at the end. Great coach, but CMR should neutralize this. What the SC game should come down to is how quick the defense can get into Garcia’s head. Stephen has always been his own worst enemy, and if you put him in a position that he MUST make a play, well 5 out of 10 times he’ll blow it. Word is that Spurrier has lost confidence in Stephen and if need be he’ll start the QB by platoon method once again. Garcia has all the tools except between his ears. Size, arm, mobility, grit, but then he’ll get a brain fart, and the visor goes flying. UGA has the superior athletes over SC and Ark for that matter. A good DC should be able to put these teams back on their heels. Unlike many, I just think the real challanges will be the usual suspects, UT, UF, and I think Auburn will surprise many. Looking forward to see how quickly the defense comes together this year.
BTW, Brantley may not have played in the bigger divisions in HS, but he played in the same division as D1 football factories JAX Boles and Madison County. It’s the same div that gave the Green boy’s (Christian and Chaze) to Florida. Some good players come out of the over the years, Kenny Kelly Miami and Darrell Jackson played in the conference at one time. I wouldn’t take Brantley too lightly.

Other exceptions would be at offensive line, linebacker, DE, wide receiver, kicker, running back. Not just QB which you claim is the given postion that the loyalty doesnt exist even thought QB the topic that brought you to say he would always play the older player. And what redshirt freshman would you consider to be better than a starting junior on the defense? Why would it matter what Grantham would do anyway. You’re not going to beat Floraida with a redshirt freshmen Qb, and your current starters on the offensive line. Simply emulate what the Gators do. Xavier Nixon, Carl Johnson, Mike Pouncey, Maurice Hurt, Marcus Gilbert = Trinton Sturdivant, Cordy Glenn, Chris Burnette, Bean Anderson, Josh Davis. You now have a superior offensive line to Florida’s. Incredibly, Richt and Booboo refuse to do this (and we know why, don’t we georgia fans). Thus, your running game will be shut down and you’ll get beat 100-0 again. It’s got to be tough being a dog. Roll Tide.

UGA can and will beat UF with a red shirt freshmen. he has plenty of help and supporting cast. plus the guy can play the qb position. he is better than Brantly alreadyat running a pro style offense already as brantly was running a tebow spread offense the last few years. brantly will look lost out there where as murry will be the one that looks like a jr out there reading defenses and changing the plays at the line.
UGA will have no problems with ala in the sec championship game. by the time they play each other UGA will have everything worked out on defense and the running game will be running on all cylinders. UGA 3-1 against ala so and richt has beaten saben before in big games. no worries.

For the Gator who compared Murray to Manning, you don’t know what you’re talking about. First of all Manning didn’t redshirt because the two guys in front of him got hurt (one of them being Todd Helton). Second, UT won 8 games that year and Peyton only lost one game that he started going 6-1.
I’m not making the comparison between the two, but since YOU brought it up you should at least get your facts straight. 6-1 as a TRUE freshman in the SEC is what Manning did.
Murray would have played last year if not for the injury. He’s clearly an upgrade talent-wise over Cox, especially his ability to move around in the pocket or escape to the outside buying valuable time, extending plays putting a lot more pressure on the LBs to contain instead of selling out to the pass coverage and giving his talented receivers a chance to break off routes and get open if they were initially covered.
If Murray simply stays patient and doesn’t force things (and throw a bunch of INTS) then UGA will have a very good offense. The other 10 starters are probably as good or better than any other unit in UGA history. At least 7 will play on Sundays and it could be more if health permitting.
Still an SEC slate, still a RS Freshman QB and still a new defense that can lead to mistakes and big plays, so any prediction of running the table would be a bit optimistic. But I see no reason why this team shouldn’t win 10 games. Only 1 team on the schedule could have more talent and it’s marginally better at this point…if at all. 10-2 regular season, which may or may not be good enough to get to Atlanta.

Bill I hate to be a jerk but what planet are you on?
The Dawgs have not won the SEC East since 2005, and not even with Stafford and Moreno. From 2006-2009, the Dawgs finished the regular season 8-4, 9-3, and 7-5( 2007 was a total anomaly). This program is back to where they were in the late 90’s, which is an 8 win program. We no longer are a program that averages 10 wins a season like we did during that stretch from 2002-2005.
I don’t care about the returning starters, especially from a team that went 7-5 and gave up 30 points on defense 5 times last season. What I want to see is this teams character. Will they fight when the chips are down or will they cave in at the first sign of adversity? If this team actually comes out and plays hard for the new defensive coaches, then yeah I can see them overachieving like they did in 2007. But if they get hit in the mouth and collapse in games like they did vs. the Vols, Gators, and Wildcats last season: then it’s game over for this season. If the players go out there and quit like they did last year, then its time for Richt to go.

Aaron Murray will do better than Greene and Stafford did in their 2nd season. He has more mobility than Greene, and more leradership than Stafford.
Look for Murray to struggle with accuracy, and take a lot of sacks instead of throw interceptions.
Here’s a stat line I can live with:
50% accuracy, 24 TD’s, 8 Int’s, 24 sacks
If he can do that, Georgia wins the SEC and plays for the National Championship against Oklahoma or Texas.

We should be fine against SC but they (SC) seem like they actualy want to win that game. Ulike half the dawg players. We should blow them out every year. Greene should be great in his home state against the state team. But beat Tenn. they are always upsetting us.

Each season is the “Year of the Dog” since Richt’s been here.
9 seasons:
6 top 10 finishes, 4 consecutive
2 top 25 finishes
Even going back to FSU, they had:
13 top 5 finishes in 15 years for Bowden while Richt was there, Bowden only had 1 top 5 finish before Richt got there, 1 after Richt left
So, 18 top 10 finishes out of last 23 seasons?
Every year’s Dog year, when Richt’s in town.

So, John Brantley will take up right where Tim Tebow left out?
Uh huh, that’s what Georgia thought last year when Cox took over for Stafford. Cox’s high school record and mop up stats were better than Brantley’s.

So Florida’s new DC will just keep doing what Charlie Strong did, right?
No way.

Of course Mark Richt will have a great year AGAIN in 2010 like he has almost every season since 1985. You’d have to have a REALLY dumb MINDLESS thought to say Mark Richt will have 2 bad years in a row, since he hasn’t in 24 years of coaching. Some people just don’t think real smart.

Joe Montana could scramble when a play broke down, and make somthing postive out of it. That’s a big deal for a QB Georgia didn’t have in Cox, or Greene. Stafford had SOME mobility, but not like Murray. Murray’s a hard to guy to lay a finger on, much less sack.
Don’t forget how smart Murray is, 4.8 GPA on 4.0 scale and a 1280 SAT. He’ll be able to use his brain to read defenses like a Peyton Manning out there.

cOACH rICHT said Murraty reminds him of Casey Weldon, who Richt coached at FU.
Casey went 60%, threw for 2500 yards and 22 TD’s, and a 16-2 record as a starter. Long career in NFL.
