Making noise in Athens, new mascot, Isner, Sturdivant

Trinton Sturdivant's return could shake up the Georgia offensive line. (Georgiadogs.com)

The buzz in the sports media that those South African vuvuzelas might show up at SEC football games this fall thankfully has been put to rest by conference official Charles Bloom, who noted that Mississippi State’s cowbells earned an exception to the rule against noisemakers on the basis of tradition. “I do not believe a vuvuzela is tied traditionally into one of our institutions,” he said. But as far as Sanford Stadium, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Not even the cowbells are welcome in Athens, where the official stadium policy reads: “Artificial noisemakers (air horns, cowbells, etc.) are not permitted in Sanford Stadium. Be considerate and allow your neighbor to enjoy the game.” Organic, natural noise only, please. … I hear from the bulldog breeding community that the latest litter of bullpups sired by interim mascot Russ came up empty as far as a possible Uga VIII. That doesn’t necessarily mean Russ will get to keep the job for the whole season, though, as Sonny Seiler already had said he’d identified several puppies from the Uga VI line as potential candidates, though none will be big enough by the start of the season. I’m still inclined to think switching mascots midseason isn’t a good idea, but whatever happens, Russ will be the mascot of record at the annual fan picture day in Athens on Aug. 21. … After this week’s Wimbledon tennis marathon featuring UGA grad John Isner and his subsequent sporting of the school colors in media interviews, I think it’s pretty safe to say you can expect to see Isner honored in an on-field ceremony Between the Hedges sometime this fall. … The Macon and Columbus papers’ David Hale, unfortunately soon to depart the UGA sports beat, had a story about the impact that a returning healthy Trinton Sturdivant might have on the Dogs’ offensive line, which finally jelled in the second half of last season. Adding Sturdivant to the starting lineup might mean Chris Davis or Josh Davis would become a backup, and I know this concerns some folks. But I liked this quote from Josh: “I’m sure the best five will play every week. That’s how we’ll roll with it.” And, really, if Sturdivant (who was a freshman All American) proves he’s ready to resume his starting spot, how could that not be a good thing?

Uga should be what people call a Dawg Fan. Few dawg fans ever go to the games as compared to the crap they talk and they never took a class at the COW College of Georgia.

How can dawg fans make a 1 syllable word into two syllables? Spelled Uga but pronounced UGH A. It is great the AJC will hire UGA journalism majors.

Sturdivant should quit football and work on his studies. He has been hurt too much for a NFL team to spend BIG money on a guy that will fall apart. S-TURD-I- Vent pass your classes and find a goMent Housing job. You ain’t making it as a NFL player.

FromtheBARstool……6/26…….7:15pm……..Son, why don’t you take your ignorant garbage down the road? Do you have any idea how many NFL linemen have had multiple knee surgeries ? alot ! It is not uncommon for an NFL offensive lineman to have had as many as four to six total knee repairs during a 6 to 10 year stint. Trinton Sturdivant is a courageous young man that wants to play football, if any school had the good fortune to have a few Trinton’s………they’d be lucky………and whats up with this racist “goment” crap?…………….You are a little man ” Mr. Stool “………just like your name, you belong in the toilet………….With warmest Best Regards, RED

Sonny Seiler and his family are loyal UGA supporters and do not deserve any criticism . The idiot’s on this blog that are making false statements and criticizing the seiler family must be GT fans or just don’t like UGA because they don’t know anything about the English Bulldog breed. A friend of mine who breeds English Bulldogs told me the life expectancy of this breed is 6 to 8 years and if they live 8 years that is a very long life . Their body causes respiratory problems and a lot of pressure on their heart. Also Sonny Seiler recently addressed the question about inbreeding and made it real clear that he has never breed any of his bulldogs with any of his own dogs. He uses 3 or 4 bulldogs that are owned by unrelated breeders. I am a 76 grad of UGA and am one who appreciates and support everything the Seiler family does for UGA and the way” Uga ” is selected and hope the Seiler family will always agree to provide UGA with their Dawgs. This family should not have to defend itself ever or at any time.

[...] Good news or bad news, depending on your point of view, on Russ: [...]

Anyone who saw Sturdivant’s latest knee injury realizes, he could face another at any time. He wasn’t doing anything exceptionally stressful at the time and the knee simply buckled.

So, we don’t make the same mistake as last year……in 2010 we either plan from the beginning to go without him, where any playing time for him is a bonus for the OL. Or, if he is back atop the depth chart, we have a solid plan B in case he does get hurt again. An effective “plan B” took entirely too long last season, an uncharacteristic mistake by Searels in 2009.

Do you think Sonny and his family care about what is being said on this blog? Some of you need a damn life. It’s not offending, it funny reading some of the crap you type. If BARSTOOL had a woman or a dog, he might be spending time doing something constructive instead of wasting his day blogging.

As for me, time to go fishing.

We Dogs are constantly hearing noise about tech’s men getting superior diplomas. With that in mind, what are the degree in for the four former Tech players who went pro? In other words, why bother to earn one at UGA, “because they are not worth a dime, but the ones at Tech are”.

So ……………did these Tech men ( Dwyer, Thomas and Morgan and Burnett) earn ANY dimplomas???

This is a fair question.

Go Dogs.

I vote your first choice in regards to Sturdivant. Trinton’s a good player, but I’m not entirely sure he’s that much of an upgrade over what we currently have, especially considering how injury prone he is. I’m sure he’s a good kid and it’s a bummer that he’s been snakebit by injuries, but at some point you either play through it or you quit playing football if it doesn’t get better. Trinton has essentially been useless to the team the last 2 years, and he is going on year 3 with this injury, so he’s lost more games to injury than he has actually played. I had a back injury that ended my football career before my senior year in high school which was lousy but it turned out to be a good thing because like 98% of most high school players, I was never going to play at the next level. The same is true for college guys who never go on to the NFL. If Trinton’s knee does not get better, then it might be time for him to move onto other ventures, which of course will be easier said than done.

As far as the Uga comments go, why don’t we have more than one?

We could have Uga VIII(a), Uga VIII(b), & Uga VIII(c). (a) could be the standard all white, (b) could be all black for when we have “Blackouts”, and (c) could be a “mixed” junkyard brindle for when we play Florida or GT.

Would create some competition among the Ugas and we would save some $$$ on jerseys for them.

i really do wish we would worry less about a pure white coat and more about fielding a healthier and more robust mascot. go back and look at UGA I OR UGA II; they’re much leaner and athletic looking than UGA VI OR VII.

dawgtrainer: i hope smokey IX can block, because you may need him up front this year. i wish you guys the best under dooley, as he seems to want to build a program in the right way, but i think it might get ugly in athens this fall.

Does it have to be an all white bulldog? No, it does have to be. Does the bulldog have to be of UGA bloodline? No. Do we really have to take a dog, outfitted in the school colors, and parade it around as a mascot for the sports teams. Nope, don’t HAVE to do that either. Why do any of it? It’s called tradition! If we don’t adhire to the tradition of an all-white UGA bloodline mascot, then what is damn point in the first place?
