A return to old-school mentality with latest ‘Dream Team’ member

Nick Marshall (left) decided he'd rather play defense at UGA than quarterback at Georgia Tech. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

After Christian LeMay committed to Georgia, many recruitnik types were writing off Mark Richt’s chances to sign Nick Marshall of Wilcox County, the state’s top-rated quarterback prospect.

So it was certainly a pleasant surprise to see that Marshall not only had committed to the Dogs, but as a defensive back, with plans to walk on with Mark Fox’s roundball Dogs as well.

And on top of that ESPN says he previously was a “silent” commitment at QB to Georgia Tech but decided he’d rather play defense at Georgia!

Pretty sweet, assuming all goes according to plan and he winds up enrolling in Athens.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the opportunity to play basketball for what looks to be an up and coming program that’s starting to generate some excitement might have played a bigger part in Marshall’s decision than a lot of folks think. But I’m sure Richt pitching this year’s UGA recruiting class as a “Dream Team” of the top in-state players also was a factor.

If Marshall does stick to defense, he’ll be part of a grand tradition. A lot of fine defensive backs at Georgia have been former quarterbacks over the years. Back in the Vince Dooley days, the thinking was that the QB was usually the best athlete on a team, so you’d sign up a bunch of them and then figure out where you wanted them to play.

Nowadays, there seems to be less of that as kids grow up watching “SportsCenter” and planning their careers as NFL quarterbacks and don’t want to let anything slow them down, including spending time backing up another QB. Thus the start-me-or-I-might-transfer mentality.

The idea of a top-rated high school quarterback being willing to play defense in order to sign with his state school is refreshing.

And, of course, if something down the road happens that gives Richt the need of another quarterback, well, he’ll have a prospect already on the roster.

I’m really liking the direction Richt is going with his recruiting this year. Now, if he can just land another couple of top receivers. …

A little surprised that he “committed” so early AND that he wants to play DB, but it is certainly encouraging for sure! I hope that all of these “dream team” guys stick with the commit and come to Athens. However, we need to start loading up on some big guys on the lines soon or we’ll be in the same boat as past years with questionable line numbers.

I swear, having Martinez gone will be bigger than most think. Backpeddling and bend but don’t break is gone. Yes, you will get burned from time to time, as i saw Bama last year give up big plays. But an aggressive, charging defense sets the tone. I’ll be glad to opposing QB’s NOT sitting back, pumping the ball 4 or 5 times and hitting a receiver with a Georgia DB 10 yards away. He will be running for his life and the WR will be covered.

I know the ratings can change, and there’s plenty more commitments to come, but I’ll wait and see how it develops before I start typing in BOLD.

He’d rather play at ugag where he ‘might’ can walk on to a pitiful basketball team, and so that makes him go there to play football? How twisted is that? And, on top of that, he is going to football to play defense? Wasn’t he a QB through HS? Now, he is able to change sides of the ball and expects to play at the ‘mighty’ uga? That is really something!

He knows that he isn’t talented enough to make the GA Tech basketball team. Let the lesser players continue to land in Athens. LOL!

Let’s give ugag all of these lesser players they want. They can come up with plenty of PR crap such as the ‘dream team’ but it seems that this will be a ‘nightmare’ if ever there was….

They (Richt and co) have had top notch players in the past and have coached them down. I guess that they want to coach someone up and so they are recruiting the lesser players?

What is it like hating another team more than you love your own??

I truly feel sorry for you guys. Do you think recruits read the crap you write on UGA’s blogs and think “hey, maybe I’ll go to tech so I can develop a burning hate for another school that beats us 8 times a decade”. You guys are pathetic.

There’s a reason your stadium (which is almost half capacity of UGA’s) is simply that, filled to half capacity. You spend too much time worrying about the ongoings on Athens.

If you were to show a Tech fan 2 pictures, one of the Buzz Mascot Logo, and another of the letters “THWG”, 90% of them would get more excited abot the letters. It’s really really a sad case.

@Dawg House-

I’ll answer. You won’t like it and/or won’t believe it, but here goes….

First, look at the responses to my first post here. We have one idiot ugag person pretend to be me using my name, and posting crap. We have one person listing irrelavent stats that totally has nothing to do with my post and yet somehow they think it makes ugag look good. We have another person stating the NCAA rules that a player must be listed as an athlete in one sport and walk on in another – duh! Not one of the posts have anything real to do with what I wrote.

Most of all, look at this blog that was written by Bill King. It is nothing more than over bloated trumpet blowing to include his phrase ‘dream team.’ What other school in the COUNTRY would have fans buy into such crap when there team didn’t even win their own little division. Dog fans live with blinders on and refuse to see the reality of their team or their conference.

It is fine to be a realistic fan with realistic expectations. But, I HATE ugag because:
1. the fans are total blinder wearing idiots
2. the players are always gettting into trouble to show their low class
3. the football coaches have never been ‘great’ but rather the school gets a great player once in a while (a la Herschel).
4. the fans are rude and obnoxious to other fans regardless

I went to the Orange Bowl and the Iowa fans were super great – before, during, and after the game. There was no taunting. There was no name calling. There was nothing but respect and fun. Why is it that ugag fans refuse to have a thimbleful of class?

It is the OFF SEASON and yet even on this blog, there are idiot blinder wearing ugag fans writing crap even though you guys DIDN’T EVEN WIN YOUR OWN DIVISION! Try winning your division at least, first, okay?

Aside from getting them prepared for the next level the coaches other main goal is to get the kids graduated and coach them through their college life and show them how to be a better person and a good man. Granted they don’t always succeed there will always be a Montez Robinson in every bunch but more often than not they do succeed.

So where is the coaching down? What no national title? Yeah its a goal and a laurel we would all love to tote but lots of things have to come into play including luck. Undefeated doesn’t even gaurantee a shot at it (see Auburn).

I have NEVER, EVER… EVER seen any fans of UGA get into any sort of fight with GT fans. Incidentally, this goes the same for the opponents. I have never seen a GT fan go after a UGA fan, and never seen a UGA fan go after a GT fan in ANY way. In fact, the ONLY fight I ever saw was b/w a UGA and Florida fan in Jacksonville, and I’m not real sure it had anything at all to do w/ football; seemed like a fight b/w 2 drunk jerks, and it was at the landing a day before the game. Nobody spits on anybody. Nobody physically assaults anybody. People who say this crap are either completely making it up or have just the most spectacularly incredible luck to actually have seen this stuff… I mean, if I haven’t seen them in the 60+ games I’ve been to over the last decade, and you have… maybe you are the one starting them…

learn something, couple issues. First, UGA consistently has recruiting classes in the top 10 in the country. It’s not unreasonable to expect that they would have more picks. Also, several of those players drafted were not recruited by Richt.

Also, and perhaps more damaging, is that the numbers are trending down. I also have add a disclaimer that the NFL is not the sole gauge of talent at a school as there are plenty of good college players whose skills don’t translate to the NFL, i.e. Eric Crouch and may be Tim Tebow.

I think its extremely selfish to transfer if you don’t play. What can these guys complain about? You are getting a FREE education. You are a student first, athlete second. Go to class, go to practice, give it all you got, and support your team.

Correct, Richt did not recruit all of them and with that established CPJ did not recruit his (yet) either.

The numbers are trending down, since Willie took over, offense seemed to be who was drafted more, hopfully with Willie gone that will balance out.

but, the NFL has to be the sole gauge of talent as there isn’t really another next level to be coached up for. Yes I know Arena leagues and Canadian football exist but come on… basically if you don’t make pro then you fall into the other category of being ‘coached up’ for life education, a career, a family, etc…

and like I said, not all will make pros and bad apples will always fall but some of those apples do deserve the chanse to get their head straight, influence can only go so far. Ultimately it is up to the individual to succeed.

GT fans ARE losers, Dan…they spend more time on the UGA blog than they do on their own blog. I am making an assumption there because I’ve never been to the Tech blog as I have no interest in them, with the exception of when we play them and beat them. They hate UGA more than they love GT as we have illustrated by the lack of fan support at their games!

UGA fans don’t care much at all about Tech one way or another…beating them is not particularly enjoyable, it’s just our birthright…we only take pleasure in beating them because losing to them is humiliating. I’m sorry if I offended you Dan, but I just have no use for Tech in general and their athletic teams in particular.

Ric Flair, agreed there more things to judging a player than if he makes it in the NFL. McElroy has an education and well… I say this with a grain of salt, life education (Satan was his coach) from his coaching staff to fall back on. He will go on to have a wonderful career with high pay (as long as he stays in Alabama, you don’t think a Bama company would pick him up in a heart beat to be a spokesman?) start a family and raise children.

But weak noodle arm a NFL quarterback does not make. He may know how to win but pro calibur D backs know how to win too. But hey, he is 6″3, 220 lbs playing again this year is he not, Julio Jones to throw to, and 2 awesome backs behind him. He will get drafted

Who cares if a Dawg fan attended UGA or not. The Dawgs represent the state. Not every one of the 92K fans every weekend can attend the school. I have followed the Dawgs since I was 8 years old just before Herschel came along. I also follow the Braves, Hawks and Falcons. If only students or Alumni followed college athletics there would be no money. Not every person from Indiana, Illinois, etc attended Notre Dame but they sure do have a strong following.

Marshall is an EXCELLENT roundballer. He is a special athlete who may be able to put on a few pounds. When he is on the field, it seems like he is the only one your eye follows. This is huge for CMR AND CMF. I try to maintain a calmness over recruiting rather than getting overhyped and then disappointed when things don’t work out, but this class may well go down as one of the best ever…period. All a coach can do is go after the best out there and coach them up. The strategy and chemistry become integral and these young men SEEM to have noticed something bigger than themselves. I am glad Darrick Rodgers has Nance to lean on at UT. He will need it.

Dan, I pasted your exact quote so that nothing gets taken out of context…

I have only trashed Tech today based on the uneducated ramblings of Tech fans on a UGA blog…why are they here?? UGA fans, like myself, came to the blog to discuss a committment of one of the top athletes in the state for 2010 and in order to do so, we have to wade through a dozen Tech dorks on OUR BLOG…it just illustrates what I’ve been saying about many Tech fans. They hate us more than they love GT, which makes them losers…

I never once based anyone’s worth on where they went to college…I happen to have graduated from UGA and have a deep love my the University, Athens and the Bulldogs. I’m just sick & tired of having to listen to GT fans like St. Simons, Truth, and others who interject themselves into a discussion about UGA football/basketball that has NOTHING to do with them! That makes them losers, regardless of whether they actually every attended GT for a day or got their Phd from the Institute.

G8R H8R,

Couple things. First, congrats on being a UGA alum. You should root for your school and be proud of them. They’ve been very succussful on the football field the past decade and academically, the school has made tremendous strides.

Second, you (and Tech fans) need to get past this “our blog” thing. It’s on the AJC. That’s as childish a comment as I can imagine. Third, you can have fun and give Tech fans a hard time. Lord knows we’ve managed to lose to y’all every way imaginable (I hope) since Richt has been there. But have a sense of humor – same goes for some Tech fans who take it too far. Fourth, you did say at 1:44 that UGA folks are just better people. I mean, c’mon. Better football team? Yeah probably. But better people? That’s basing an individual’s worth on where they went to school. Grow up. Last, your name is G8R H8R. You can’t criticize Tech fans for hating UGA – which we unquestionably do – and use that as your screen name without coming across as hyprocritical. I get that you hate UF – they’ve had their way with y’all the same way y’all have with Tech the past 20 years. But show you love the pups instead of hating the Gators – at least if hating someone else is less important than loving your own school.

Best of luck to y’all this fall. Poke fun if you like, but be creative and funny.

UGA has a world of momentum right now. If they show up and dominate on the football field early on next year, maybe they can indeed pull a top 5 or a #1 recruiting class.

And as for basketball, UGA has a chance to turn the corner for the long term this coming season. If they pull an NCAA bid and simply even stay in the race to win the SEC, their recruiting ability should be very strong for Fox. UGA fans need to give Mark Fox a long term reason to stay though. If things go right, he can make a non-traditional UGA basketball program into a powerhouse. Other than Kentucky, the other SEC schools can’t claim enough tradition or reasons to be a better choice for top GA high school players to go to over UGA. GTech will be in trouble too.

Dan, I must admit you do make several good points…it is a little hypocritical for me to call Tech fans losers because they are fixated on UGA more than their own team and use a handle like G8R H8R. I’ll pick something different going forward…I’m not too proud to admit when someone makes a good point.

When I made the comments “that we’re just better people” and “beating Tech is our birthright,” they were made tongue in cheek, but that doesn’t come across well in print. I’ve said those things for years to my fellow UGA fans and they understand where I’m coming from.

I do not agree, however, with you on the “our blog” thing…this blog is called the Junkyard Blawg for a reason…it’s for UGA fans to come on and discuss what’s going on with OUR team. Tech has a blog of their own…GT fans should spend a little time there once a week or so. I’m sure there are UGA fans on the Tech blog as well and they should stay off there and let Tech fans have a place to discuss their teams without having to wade through the crap we wade through here daily from Tech and UF fans.

Just my $.02….I feel better now.

What UGA Really Means

June 9th, 2010
3:17 pm

So, lets recap:

UGA makes a deal with Nick Marshall’s cousin Lonnie Outlaw
to help land Marshal. Not a bad deal, on face value.

However, according to AJC’s Michael Carvell commenting on Outlaw:

“The Bulldogs signed Outlaw knowing he was a few credits shy and will require two years at Georgia Military College before being admitted UGA.”

So, let me get this straight, Outlaw, another product of this state’s “exceptional” high school education system…
“…was just a few credits shy (of admission to UGA)…”
yet he will require…2 FULL YEARS at GMC ??

So, Outlaw cant even meet the ROCK-BOTTOM educational requirements
of the highly dubious “Special Admissions” program at UGA ??

Sounds like Outlaw cant even read.

Bait & Switch anyone?

But hey, not to worry. This is all just “Business As Usual” at UGA.

You know, use semi-illiterate student-athletes to earn money (or help recruit players) for the financial benefit of a private corporation known as the UGA Athletic Association.

That’s some kind of “Dream Team” model that CMR is trying to put together?

“A return to old-school mentality” seems like the PERFECT motto here.

This is another example of Richt’s ability to actually reach kid’s while recruiting. Richt has never had a problem no matter who the B-ball coach was or is with a kid dabbling into 2 sports. I can’t say that for Tech. I am not a Tech basher, I love all sports in this state. I just don’t see how they did not take a good look at this kid’s B-ball skills. He may come from a very small school, but they are a central GA powerhouse on the hardwood. I also think he’s taken a wise approach on his future, being from a small program his possibility of making the pros are much better at the DB pos. & who knows what he may do on the B-ball court. I don’t think Tech’s style of play is going 2 get Nesbitt 2 the next level even if he has a monster year. Having seen Marshall play last year, I still would love to have had a chance to see him play under center at the next level somewhere !!! Maybe a little wildcat may be in his future, let’s just wait & see. Great recruiting job Richt !!

What UGA Really Means :

Is this your birthday?
If not then you can’t cry if you want too

we all know Outlaw didn’t ’sign’wtih UGA, he signed with GMC. UGA let him have his day with an offer than wouldn’t hold water so that after 4 years of not taking anything seriously he would go on to a junior college and spend 2 years learning some responsibility. And THEN once he has done so he will be awarded a scholoarship to UGA if he still desires to attend. If he does not meet the elligibility then he doesn’t get in, or if he wishes to attend elsewhere he is free to do so.

Not exactly uncommon. Its called a second chance, or if you are christian a shot at redemption.

And please let me know where I can find something attesting to the fact that the AJC’s Michael Carvell is the pinnacle of all knowledge so that I may stop being a doubting Thomas and place my utmost trust in his every word.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like Miami and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

And the highest player arrest rate in the country. When is that going to change? When?

Waaaaah, Waaaaah, Waaaaah, “Iowa was nice to us and talked to us nicely” you sound like a little girl Truth…This is why we call you guys names… because you deserve it! That’s it… you deserve it! NOW, GO AND GET ME A BEER!!

Great report! Bill King and the AJC finally say something positive about the state’s flagship university, UGA. Not only is Nick Marshall’s pledge encouraging, so is the news of UGA’s No. 2 SEC rank on the NCAA’s Annual Report of Academic Progress in football.

Speaking of academic quality, too little is said of UGA’s respected rank among the nation’s leading academic insititutions. According to the latest rankings of America’s national universities, only Vandy and Florida rank higher than UGA among SEC schools. Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, etc. are far behind, it appears, in academic quality. UGA’s proud Honors Program has produced recent Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, etc. and students in the HP have test scores (SAT) and high school grades that compare favorably (and exceed in many instances) with Ivy League Schools. Georgians should be proud to have an institution like UGA; and, to be fair, they should also be proud of Ga. Tech, another high-ranking national university.

As a whole, it wouldn’t hurt us UGA fans to thicken our skin. This is a blog and there will always be folks that want to stir the pot. Who cares? What do their opinions truely matter in the grand scheme of things? Ignore the antagonists and their motives will become greatly diminished.

Back to football…The 2010 season will hinge upon many variables that must become constants, if UGA is going to be a contender in the East. Can Aaron Murray avoid the typical mistakes a first year starter (costly ints, when taking a sack or throwing the ball away is a better option) often makes? And, will he be able to read opposing defenses and audibilize his offense into successful plays? We’ll have to wait awhile for the answer. Sorry for the “coach speak” but Murray must provide ball security, leadership, and instill confidence inside the huddle. That’s a lot to ask from a RS Freshman. Doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

For the obvious, but necessary question of the day: How will the Georgia Defense execute Todd Grantham’s philosophy on this side of the ball? Can the Dawgs put more pressure on opposing QBs?

Back to the offensive side of things. Look for Rantavious Wooten to make a huge impact in 2010. This kid knows how to make plays. He just needs to do it on a more consistent basis. With defenses rolling their coverages toward AJ Green and Orson Charles, #17 will have many opportunities to showcase his talents. I don’t know what to expect from guys, such as Marlon Brown and Carlton Thomas, but they are capable of making an impact as well. The 6-5 sophomore from Memphis should be a serious threat inside the redzone. As for #30…Dude was named the most improved offensive player during the spring. Most notably, Carlton has vastly improved his pass protection skills and blitz recognition. This will give CMR the flexibility of using him more often and adding another dimension to the UGA offense. Defenses will expect to see CT in the flats on toss sweeps or flare passes because of his game changing speed. But, Thomas will be used as a blocker in play action pass situations as well. This aspect of his game should be enough for a decent (CMB) offensive coordinator to keep the D guessing.

How ’bout the O-Line? The return of Trinton Sturdivant could be huge, but can he regain the form that made him a freshman All SEC caliber blocker? And, how will the return of blocking TE Bruce Figgins impact the rushing attack? These 2 Dawgs should add a boost to the offense, if they can become the players they were before suffering setbacks due to injury.

WR Kris Durham will keep the chains moving as a posession receiver. He was sorely missed in 2009. Georgia’s offense should be explosive, but defense wins in the SEC. The Dawgs must show tremendous improvement in their pass defense and points allowed statistics from ‘09. That will be a tall task for these young Dawgs. But, they do have the talent to hunker down.

Go DAWGS!!!

What UGA Really Means….. Check out the recently published APRs, Academic Progress Rate. This is the NCAA standard for measuring athletic programs eligibility, retention, and graduation of athletes.

UGA football was second in the SEC with a score of 975 (second to Vandy with a score of 978.) And GT’s score…….963.

As for basketball, UGA was 5th with a score of 944. And GT’s score…….908, dead last in the ACC and below the NCAA required 925.

That is what UGA really means, quality athletics and a quality education.

Gatorbait 17-3:
They didn’t lower ticket prices. They lowered the donation threshold to get on the list of season tickets. Reading is good
===============================================================

Sorry to p$ss you boys off, but we do math a little different in Florida. I did
read the article and I know the price of the ticket is the same, but the required donation
is less. Let me give you a simple example, you have 7 games, 6 home games and the annual loser in Jacksonville. Let’s just say the 7 tickets cost $700.00 last year and this year-no increase, but the donation required this year is $1400.00 whereas last year it was $2100.00 (these dollar amounts are examples only for you boys). Now pay real close attention boys in 2009, 7 games cost you $400 per game (2800 / 7), now in 2010 the cost of each game is just $300.00 per game (2100 / 7)

I hate burst you bubble brains, but each game you attend will cost less than last year.
In most of the literate world, “ticket price” is defined as the price to attend an event.

Now I maybe wrong about one thing, if you haven’t sold out your stadium with season
ticket holders and sell single game tickets then you boys would be correct. It would be sad to admit that the mighty dogs can’t sell out their stadium.

Bulldog59

Why the surprise concerning the lowering of the “total” donation minimum for season ticket holders? We are in a prolonged economic slump in this country with 11 out of every 100 people out of work and the average homeowner has seen his home suddenly become worth 20% less. Times are tough.

I have no idea if UF or any other school is lowering their minimum totals, and face it, you don’t either. Unless they make a point to make it public as UGA did, you’d never know.

Hey Wait and See Dawg, Don’t get caught up in the # of stars. With these recruiting services they are only interested in the kids that haven’t committed yet because it draws more interest. Once a kid commits somewhere he isn’t as interesting and he get dropped a star and they move up the guy who was second or third on the list. The same thing happened with Stafford. He was called the best QB in the nation but after he committed to UGA early several other QBs suddenly moved ahead of him. There is no way to really tell how good a player is until he’s on the field and these recruiting services are just trying to sell magazines and website subscriptions.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that D. Evans fire Richt. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship go up to at least 20:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

Well, here in The Real World, I can assure you that neither Nick Saban or Mack Brown or Urban Meyer is going over the list of Georgua “commits” and saying “Wow, now that’s a dream team in recruiting!” OK, now……….that may change if UGA gets signitures on signing day from Georgia’s top prospects and then goes and secures top rated five star players on the national scale from various other states much like Florida did this past year. But until then, let’s lay off of this “Dream Team” label until it actually really happens.

Hey, “Truth,” get your numbers straight. U.Ga has 32,000 students and a stadium that seats nearly 100,000–and they could sell out a 120,000 seat stadium if they could find a way to sell it that big.

Tech has ~20,000 students and has a stadium that seats about 55,000 which almost never sells out. The actual attendence for an average Tech home game last season was about 50,000, with the highest attendence (naturally) at the U.Ga. game, where many seats were sold to Georgia fans. So if every single Tech student went to every game (which doesn’t happen), the Jackets would sell an average of 30,000 seats per game to non-students. Throw in about 5000 faculty attendees and that number is even smaller–more like 25,000 per game. If the same situation were present in Athens, U.Ga. would sell about 65,000 seats per game to non-student/non-faculty ticketholders. That’s an excess of 40,000 tickets sold EVERY WEEK to people who pay thousands of dollars just for the right to be able to purchase tickets (not including the ticket prices themselves).

It’s no wonder that the U.Ga. athletic program is among the most successful in the country–and, similarly, no wonder that Tech’s is not.

Emily in Crabapple Corners

June 10th, 2010

NOTE TO HEELDAWG: The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

The “dream team” was coined about the potential collections of top notch recruits out of the State of Georgia this year particularly. Nobody called Uga that, or the partial class of the verbally committed a half year before signing day. Does that make you feel any better?

However, given that most Dawg fans have always looked favorably at getting most of the class from in-state every year, it could be called OUR dream team to sign a big group of them. Oddly we don’t really care what the Nexium poster boy would say about it.

Be nice, young lady. We’re in here for the fun of poking each other over our allegiances to our respective schools, not pontificating on the relative merits of one school who has produced more Rhodes, Fulbright and Truman scholars in the last three years (UGA) than the other has in its history (GT). Please see the recently released APR (Academic Progress Rating) that is used as the national standard for rating the progress of athletics throughout the NCAA.

In football, UGA finished second in the SEC behind Vandy. Our score was a very respectable 975. This was ahead of the 968 scored by GT football. Our basketball program finished at 944 I believe, while GT finished at 908, well below the mandated NCAA minimum of 925.

Our academic standards for athletes and non-athletes at UGA are just fine, thank you very much.

If GTers are so smart, why are the mouths frequently ahead of their brains, and in left field in terms of facts?
