Consider the source of reports bad-mouthing UGA coaches

Secondhand sniping at Mark Richt isn't worth worrying about. (University of Georgia)

Secondhand sniping at Mark Richt isn't worth worrying about. (University of Georgia)

This seems to be a week for second-hand knocks on UGA’s football coaches.

First we had the much overblown report that Nash Nance, a quarterback whose main claim to a scholarship at the University of Tennessee appeared to be that he was the best friend of highly recruited receiver Da’Rick Rogers, told the Knoxville News-Sentinel that Rogers reneged on his commitment to Georgia because “the [UT] coaches are a lot more professional. He had a lot of bad dealings with Georgia coaches.”

Nash didn’t provide any specifics on those so-called bad dealings, but the natural suspicion among many in the Bulldog Nation is that what’s at the heart of Nash’s blast is that the UGA coaches wouldn’t guarantee to Rogers that they’d give his buddy a scholarship as well.

Whatever. Sounds like mean-spirited post-recruiting sour grapes.

But on top of having his professionalism questioned by a kid who UGA snubbed, Mark Richt has also gotten some blowback from a source reportedly close to former Georgia safety Makiri Pugh, who decided after spring practice to leave UGA apparently because he didn’t think he was going to get much playing time.

Pugh plans to transfer to Colorado, his high school position coach has told The Athens Banner-Herald. That in itself isn’t all that interesting since he’ll have to sit out a year and so won’t be playing against his former teammates. And Pugh is free to go to whatever school will have him since Richt gave him an unconditional release, as is his custom with transfers.

But John Kranish, one of Pugh’s former coaches at Independence High School in Charlotte, told the ABH that Pugh was “very disappointed” in Georgia because he says that some of the other Division I schools that Pugh contacted did not get a return call from Richt or former Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, now on the staff at Oklahoma. Kranish says North Carolina State and some other ACC schools wanted to talk to UGA about the circumstances behind Pugh leaving.

What Martinez does or does not do is, fortunately, no longer our concern. But Kranish’s implication is that Richt didn’t care enough about Pugh as a player to help place him at another school.

First of all, let’s acknowledge there’s always the possibility that the picture Kranish paints is incomplete or even completely inaccurate. This is another second-hand account, with nothing directly from the player involved.

But assuming that calls to Butts-Mehre about Pugh did indeed go unanswered, what can we take from this?

Richt could have put restrictions on where Pugh transferred, as some other coaches do, but he didn’t. Beyond that, does he really owe Pugh anything? The head coach of a major school is a pretty busy guy. Should he be expected to spend time trying to place a guy who has bailed on his program?

And there’s another way of looking at the situation, as the Senator touched on in Get the Picture: Perhaps this falls in the “if you don’t have anything good to say about someone, don’t say anything at all” department.

It could be that Richt decided Pugh’s chances of landing at a decent program would be improved by him not honestly discussing the reasons the player wasn’t getting much time on the field at Georgia.

So we have a disgruntled player from another school who didn’t get recruited by Richt and a disgruntled former player who mostly rode the bench bad-mouthing the UGA staff.

Stack that up against the nine years of evidence that Richt is probably the nicest and most caring guy in the SEC coaching ranks and the beaucoup testimonials from the many players who’ve stuck with his program and thrived, and I don’t think anyone in Athens needs to lose a wink of sleep over this “bad” publicity.

Similar to when CMR wasted Marlon Brown’s redshirt last year when he put him in up in Knoxville??? But seriously, he probably appreciates burning a year of his eligibility for 15 yds. reception for the year…..what a joke.

I am astonished at the sense of entitlement these kids have. Richt has how many players? like 60. Plus coaches. Plus media. Camps. Appearances. I guess he should apologize for not puckering up and smooching the buttocks of some kid that didn’t want to play for him or in Nance’s case was not really good enough to play for him. could you imagine if Bear Bryant were alive and had to deal with this kind of whiney, gossipy crap. Why do we even entertain these kids’ notions that they are more important and no better than coaches… that is grown ups.

You know who will win all the NCs in coming years? Whatever coaches get their players to sack up and quit being gossiping little ninnies… You want to play? Then work your butt off and get stronger, faster, better than the guy ahead of you. Those two UT kids haven’t even played a down of college football, and the AJC is giving them headlines?????????

Chazzo: So you are admitting that CMR will never win a NC??? I don’t think Bear Bryant would ever let his team lead the league in penalties year after year, convene in an endzone for a “celebration”, or allow his players to do the “Soulja Boy” dance on the sidelines before the 4th quarter. Yeah, Richt just spells out discipline to me.

JB,

Saban has had players transfer because they didn’t want to buy into the sense of discipline with which Saban runs the program. 7 arrests with the bad Shula apples in Saban’s first year, 1 or 2 arrests the next year, and only one player arrested last year with the charges dismissed. At Alabama we do not put up with 30+ players arrested over a 3 year time frame. Some players such as Star Jackson transferred due to lack of playing time which happens everywhere.

Saban has taken a personal hand in helping each player who transferred find a new home, even the players asked to leave due to discipline problems. To date I’ve not seen any negative comments from players who had to transfer because they were discipline problems.

There is a problem with Richt and his staff if they can’t take 5 minutes to return a phone call to help the young man find a new school. There’s no excuse for that and you can chalk that one up to either just being indifferent and not giving a hoot about the player or being disorganized to where you can’t find 5 minutes to make a phone call.

How2fish,

5 players getting a couple of extra textbooks to help out friends is a far cry from 30 players getting arrested. If you can’t realize that then I just can’t help you. And in case you didn’t notice the school discovered the problem, self reported it, and punished the players.

And as far as ethics go as your fellow dog poster pointed out our players don’t do soulja boy dancing on the sidelines, we don’t do group celebrations in the end zone, etc. and once again we don’t have enormous numbers of players getting arrested left and right.

Speaking of the term LMAO, I was doing the same yesterday when I read your post stating that Georgia, like OU, Florida, and Texas, is a destination job while Alabama is not. Now THAT had me LMAO.

How2fish,

I would think that most people would agree that getting an extra textbook to help out a friend or girlfriend is a little less serious crime than say driving drunk in which case someone can get freaking killed. Have you lost your mind?

As for Mike Price having strippers in his room it was just him and not the whole coaching staff you idiot. And what did we do? We fired him for it so what the hell is your whole point about if we took action on this idiot embarrassing us?

As for Bama not being a destination job for Saban why would it not be? It has the facilities, the recruiting base, the fan base and alumni support, and a tradition that cannot be argued with. Very similar to OU, Texas, and Florida. You’re just mad that he came out 2 days ago and stated that he is going to retire at Bama and that it is what it is. That’s what you’re all fired up about.

Last time I checked Tech just had three players (two starters) transfer to a lower division school. I’ll bet CPJ held the door open for them. Saban has long been know for signing more players than he has scholarships for. Every year he runs people off the team to make room for others. Get real people…if Pugh was any good do you really think he would have stayed on the sidelines the past two years?…..I’ll tell you what…how about Bama taking him Bama Fan? You seem to have all the answers…would that be all right with you and your god Saban?……. My neighbors son goes to Bama because he couldn’t get in Georgia.Last year he was riding in a car with two football players (one was a starter) and they got pulled over for speeding. They all had been drinking and had beer in the car….guess what the cop did when he recognized the starter….he escorted them back to their dorm…NO TICKET…NO CITATION..just a warning to not let it happen again…..Thats why Bama doesn’t have any arrests…. the local police cover up the incidents….yeah..my neighbor and his son sure do like Bama.

Bama fan 1st never said anything about driving drunk..that is not a misdemeanor..and we haven’t had any of those I can remember..the 30 arrests are for diving without the proper documents in most cases.underage drinking and the fighting that goes with kids drinking. Any of our players that lie to the coaching staff (ZM)or don’t toe the line after an infraction are gone just like Mike Price but you keep throwing those arrests at us so Mike Price right back at ya…And all of the reasons to stay you give are spot on a great coaching gig for most is Bama. But really are you so desperate that you actually believe Saban when he talks of leaving or staying..ask the Miami folks about how that worked out for them..or LSU..you can’t rewrite the man history..great coach yes…teller of the truth always..not so much.

Forgive me “Get Real” if I don’t take your bs anecdotal story as pure truth. Did they also see Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night? Perhaps you don’t realize that a scholarship to an NCAA school is up for renewal on an annual basis? There are no guarantees that you will get potentially five years (the max allowed) of an athletic scholarship at a D1 school. Do you think you are the only genius to discover that Saban oversigns players? Do you think the recruits and their parents are completely in the dark as to how the process works? Saban tells all recruits that nothing is guaranteed. You will have to fight for your job every year. Yet somehow 4 and 5 star recruits still keep signing on the dotted line. I guess you see the light while they and the NCAA are just wearing blinders.

CMR job is to recruit players not help place them after they become disenchanted. That would be the position coaches job. Why even report on this? CMR has placed players at other SEC teams that could not get into UGA. If he wanted to he would have placed Pugh.

That behavior isn’tworth the dung from the UGA mascot’s tale.

So you’re saying it is alright to take away a scholarship from a player who didn’t turn out as good as expected in order to give it to somebody else who has the potential to be better? That sounds like the NFL to me.

Fill me in on other programs that practice that form of scholarship management.

There are so many other factors that go into it…greyshirt, medical, transfer…and believe me Saban knows exactly how the numbers will work. And so do every oone of the players he recruits. Believe me they do or their parents would not send their 5 star baby to Tuscaloosa. Too much like the NFL for you? Sounds like your beef is with the NCAA not Alabama. And many, many schools recruit with attrition in mind. Ole Miss signed 38 last year for example. You should also note that Saban isn’t able to do this as much lately since the scholarships, that we lost to probation earlier this decade, are now pretty much filled up.

Just the facts….the most knowledgeable college football recruiting guy I know personally, told me when Saban took the job at Bama, good coach, will win big, but recruits too many players and makes too many promises. Then he runs them off to fill the spots with the new talent. Eventually it will catch up to him if he stays anywhere long enough. (quote unquote, as they say)

2007, 25 scholarships, 2008 32 scholarships, 2009 28 scholarships, there is your NCAA max in just 3 years.

Everyone over recruits to a degree, to compensate for career ending injuries, transfers, washouts, etc. But to act as though Saban makes it a priority to stand behind his players as some have implicated here, is an overstatement guys.

Nothing against Saban or Bama, but the fact is, when the chips are down, he will probably look to ship you off somewhere rather than ride out any adversity with you.
