Why not give the old Dawg a full season?

A lot of fans are particularly fond of interim mascot Russ. (University of Georgia)

As had been expected, Sonny Seiler has made it official that a new Uga won’t be ready in time for the start of the season, meaning interim mascot Russ will be around for a few more games. In fact, Uga VIII might not make his debut until the homecoming game against Vandy on Oct. 16.

But what might surprise Seiler and the folks at Butts-Mehre is that there’s a growing contingent in the Bulldog Nation that thinks changing mascots in midseason isn’t that great an idea. And just imagine what the chatter would be if the Dogs were to be undefeated coming into that homecoming game. Is that really when you want to make that kind of switch?

Sure, it’s understandable that Russ at age 5 is considered too old to become the next Uga. But there’s a definite fondness for the not-quite-all-white half-brother of the late Uga VII, probably because his tenure as a sub kicked off in such spectacular fashion last year with an upset of the Jackets in Atlanta.

Why not let Russ serve out the entire 2010 season and let Uga VIII begin his reign with a full season in 2011?

GAME TIMES

It might not have been a pressing issue for most fans, but I’m quite relieved to hear this morning that the Dogs’ Oct. 2 game against Colorado will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET. I’ve been worrying about the possibility of a night game ever since it was decided the Athens High School Class of 1970 40th reunion will take place in Athens on that evening. Now I don’t have to juggle the two.

Speaking of game times, though, David Hale of Bulldogs Blog mentioned in a roundup of notes from the SEC meetings in Destin that the athletic directors had met with representatives of ESPN about the conference’s TV deal and that UGA’s Damon Evans brought up the issue of kickoff times.

While Evans recognizes that Georgia is likely to continue to have a lot of night games at Sanford Stadium because of the ESPN deal, he would like a better balance than last season. Evans noted that early kickoffs appeal to a broader demographic of fans and cause less of a burden on campus police and support staff.

I don’t know whether Evans speaking up is likely to make any difference (I tend to doubt it), but I’m glad he did. I’ve sort of gotten used to the extended game day routine that a night kickoff requires, but I’d still love to see more afternoon starts.

(UPDATE: UGA announced today the Sept. 18 game against Arkansas at Sanford Stadium will kick off at noon.)

What are your feelings on the shift to mostly night games in Athens?

I hate to doubt the motivations of our president and AD, but I assume they only want to move the games because of tailgating. Since tickets are pre-sold out, they don’t worry about draw. Night games are one big hassle overall, especially if you go back at night, but I think that is a convenient excuse. I wonder if we went to all noon kicks and continued to eliminate tailgate options by 1/4 each year, when we would finally see significant dropoff?

I remember that Uga II was a puppy of sorts and don’t know why one doesn’t fit the bill from the litter just born. Waiting on another litter seems to be trying for perfection (all white male) and I would think it good to go for a female. Of course, Russ is lovable and we like the attachment to Uga VII that continues through him. We just don’t have to be superstitious about it. What happens if we go undefeated and can’t change? That should be in the mix. If the Seilers don’t think we have the perfect dog, then I don’t want that to be on their head. We can always cast about for the perfect well-bred mascot in Bulldog land and end our dependency on others making our school mascot decisions for us. Don’t get me wrong–if the Seilers are ready and able for an heir to the throne, then let’s get on with it. No problem. But, if the Seilers and the University have both got to be in perfect synch for every representative of our University, then we should look around for a new dynasty…and I was at Georgia during Uga I’s reign. Steeped in tradition doesn’t mean welded to tradition. If we are eschewing females and imperfection then let’s pause for a moment and think. This dynasty has been with us through the good graces of the Seilers and we indeed embrace that gift. If perfection is created in the giver’s mind, then let’s help them by telling the Seilers that we still trust in their judgement as to their choosing our mascot, but a female or not perfectly white color is fine from this lineage. Or declare Russ to no longer be the Dawg-In-Waiting , but instead to be OUR DAWG for the rest of his natural life. If that is just a few years of his life (and mine) then so be it! What the hell is a title anyway. Lewis Grizzard would think it is standoffish and a little too royal. He , like I , might just appreciate a Sluggo for a change. Erk Russell probably wouldn’t mind either.

As a Redcoat member I have mixed feelings about night games. Nothing beats the wonderful hours of tailgating before a game, the intensity of the crowd that seems to grow as the sun goes down, but 7 am rehearsals leading to an 8 pm kickoff is tiring. I’m all for night games, but maybe not as many this year?

oledawg,

I might agree with you, but your post was pretty much unreadable. There’s a key on the right hand side of your keyboard with a left hand arrow on it that reads “Enter.” It’s useful for paragraphs.

You’re welcome.

Now that I no longer have season tickets I prefer start times at 3:30 PM or later — fire up the big screen (and fireplace later in the season) and enjoy!

Gotta have a cold one or while I watch — can’t do that at Sanford, you know :-)

I enjoyed the earlier times when I made the trip to our classic city.

I was in Columbia in 1988 and it was 200 degrees.

Should be about the same this year.

Maybe our depth on the OL will payoff.

I still think we are gonna win. I’d love for it to not be close for once with us on the winning end.

If you remember Russ didn’t really care for the UGA role. Sonny had explained that Russ didn’t like the noise (especially the band) and I’m sure he’d rather hang on the porch on the homestead and get his ears rubbed.

UGA Ticket Prices Dropping? Well, this has me concerned in 2 ways:

1. Will the coaching staff still be able to afford the payments on their vacation homes on lakes?

2. Will we have enough case to bail our players out of Clarke County Jail?

Night games are fantastic. The stadium is gorgeous all alight and the atmosphere is electric…and when the game is over I can turn off the tv and go to bed. I live in Athens, am a season ticket holder and have been for twenty years. Night games are awesome, and one or two a year is great. Anymore, I’m selling the tickets, and watching it on the 50 inch LCD that I bought two years ago selling tickets to night games.

And ticket prices are not dropping, merely the minumum amount for a new season ticket holder to donate in order to receive tickets dropped. The place is still sold out all season, and will be next year as well as the next, etc..
How’s the sales coming in that addition to Bobby Dodd/Grant Field/Carjack Stadium/Streetmugging Center over on North Avenue? And of course, 30-24, 8 of 9

lol tech fans care about our next mascot almost as much as we do.. maybe if your team put more emphasis on trying to beat us, instead of obsessing over our recruits, fans, stadium, beautiful town, future NFL stars, pretty girls, mascot, etc., you could win against us more than once a decade. Hey, i gotta go to downtown Atl tomorrow, who’s down for being on the unfortunate end of another armed robbery?

Actually I think you mean “instead” of. Not “like” them. Only one coach from each division can “dominate” and really if you think about it, how did a coach that lost the SECCG be dominating too. So basically what you mean is that tell Richt to be the best coach in the best league and then……

And do it before the other 11 figure out that they get paid to do the same thing.
