Why not give the old Dawg a full season?

A lot of fans are particularly fond of interim mascot Russ. (University of Georgia)

As had been expected, Sonny Seiler has made it official that a new Uga won’t be ready in time for the start of the season, meaning interim mascot Russ will be around for a few more games. In fact, Uga VIII might not make his debut until the homecoming game against Vandy on Oct. 16.

But what might surprise Seiler and the folks at Butts-Mehre is that there’s a growing contingent in the Bulldog Nation that thinks changing mascots in midseason isn’t that great an idea. And just imagine what the chatter would be if the Dogs were to be undefeated coming into that homecoming game. Is that really when you want to make that kind of switch?

Sure, it’s understandable that Russ at age 5 is considered too old to become the next Uga. But there’s a definite fondness for the not-quite-all-white half-brother of the late Uga VII, probably because his tenure as a sub kicked off in such spectacular fashion last year with an upset of the Jackets in Atlanta.

Why not let Russ serve out the entire 2010 season and let Uga VIII begin his reign with a full season in 2011?

GAME TIMES

It might not have been a pressing issue for most fans, but I’m quite relieved to hear this morning that the Dogs’ Oct. 2 game against Colorado will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET. I’ve been worrying about the possibility of a night game ever since it was decided the Athens High School Class of 1970 40th reunion will take place in Athens on that evening. Now I don’t have to juggle the two.

Speaking of game times, though, David Hale of Bulldogs Blog mentioned in a roundup of notes from the SEC meetings in Destin that the athletic directors had met with representatives of ESPN about the conference’s TV deal and that UGA’s Damon Evans brought up the issue of kickoff times.

While Evans recognizes that Georgia is likely to continue to have a lot of night games at Sanford Stadium because of the ESPN deal, he would like a better balance than last season. Evans noted that early kickoffs appeal to a broader demographic of fans and cause less of a burden on campus police and support staff.

I don’t know whether Evans speaking up is likely to make any difference (I tend to doubt it), but I’m glad he did. I’ve sort of gotten used to the extended game day routine that a night kickoff requires, but I’d still love to see more afternoon starts.

(UPDATE: UGA announced today the Sept. 18 game against Arkansas at Sanford Stadium will kick off at noon.)

What are your feelings on the shift to mostly night games in Athens?

Anybody see that Colorado will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their 1990 AP National Championship when we are there? Funny…. doesn’t another school “claim” a 1990 National Championship?? Hillarious!!!!

Completely agree on going with Russ all season then the new UGA in 2011.

Let’s face major college athletics have sold to TV so it is what it is. To get all the SEC games on TV most will be played at noon or at night.

Russ is a good looking dawg. I say keep him. As for game times, no one can control that. The better you do, the more night games you end up playing. Kinda sucks but that’s the way it is.

I guess when Colorado is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of their N.C. we can celebrate the 30 year anniversary of our last N.C.

Russ deserves a full year as the mascot. He earned last year and it would give the new pup time to mature into a full grown dog. Let Russ have his day.

As far as game times are concerned, I just hope we don’t end up on CBS very often. Ol’ Vern and the CBS crew drive me crazy and they take an absurd number of commercial breaks. As for the CU game, I was advised by a Nebraska fan not to wear any UGA colors to the game to avoid drawing the ire of the CU fans. I guess he’s never been to LSU or Jacksonville and faced those drunk rednecks.

30-24 hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

On the business – as an outside dawg (i.e. one who lives far enough away that the last UGA game I went to was the UGA-AU classic in 2002), I like any game that ends up on TV. If I lived there, though, I’d want either the noon kick-off or the late game. Either way, lots of time to set up the smoker…

The Ultimate ASTERISK should be shown on Colorado’s jumbotron when they honor their 1990 “”"”"”"Championship”"”"”"”" team. I’m a UGA fan but I still can’t believe Tech had to share a championship with a team that got 5 downs to win a game. Unbelievable.

I can wait until 2011. I’d rather come in on a season when we actually have a chance at the NC, not saying that we don’t every year, but we didn’t last year, and we have made to many changes and don’t have an experienced QB to be considered in the hunt for a NC this year. Let Russ go 10-2, and I’ll come in and go 14-0! Again, I’d rather wait!

As long as the Dawgs have to play Tennessee, you don’t have to concern yourselves about being undefeated coming into that homecoming game.

Hey CO Dawg, I wouldn’t worry too much about the “ire” of CU fans when they are getting their asses handed to them. I heard the same about AZ State fans in Tempe and their chirping lasted all of about 1 quarter before they caved and Dawg fans owned that stadium.

What the heck difference does it matter? One ugly, mangy, flea-bitten mutt is as good as another.

It must be a really slow week if a sportswriter has nothing better to write about than a stupid mutt.

May Tangier

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that D. Evans fire Richt.

Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship go up to at least 20:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it. And a stupid mutt mascot doesn’t matter either!

As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”
