Bulldog Bites: Christian LeMay, Cocktail Party, Tech-Georgia weekend

(University of Georgia)

(University of Georgia)

Let’s head into the Memorial Day holiday weekend with some quick hits that you might want to discuss …

One more reason for Dogs fans to get stoked about Matthews, N.C., quarterback Christian LeMay saying he intends to enroll at UGA: In the first installment of the Sporting News Top 100 ranking for the football class of 2011, Lemay ranks a lofty No. 3. The other Georgia commitment making the list: defensive end Sterling Bailey of Gainesville at No. 95. …

When our Tim Tucker revealed that in the forthcoming new deal for the Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville the two schools will have the right to sell the name of the game, a coworker wondered aloud what they’d do if a beverage company like Seagram’s or Budweiser offered a bundle — especially since the UGA and UF presidents have discouraged the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party nickname.

While it’s amusing to consider, chances are they’d say no. You don’t see any alcohol product names on college football bowl games, and I don’t think Georgia and Florida would go down that road. …

Bulldogs Blog’s David Hale reports that according to Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt, UGA’s Mark Fox is going to get his wish to have the two schools’ annual basketball game moved earlier in the season while students are still on campus. Likely date this year: Dec. 7.

Hale notes that some fans have raised the notion of playing the basketball game the Friday night before the Dogs and Jackets meet in football, but that weekend generally conflicts with tournament play and students would be on Thanksgiving break.

Some friends and I debated this idea back when Fox first announced he wanted an earlier date, and we liked the prospect of making the annual in-state grude match a two-sport affair in the same city so fans easily could attend both. I don’t think Thanksgiving break would be much of a problem, since the students manage to turn up en masse for the football game the next day.

The main problem would be that the football and basketball series currently rotate between Athens and Atlanta in opposing years. Last season, for example, the football game was at Tech and the basketball game was in Athens. In order to pair the two sports, that rotation would have to be disrupted, which would require someone play on the road two years in a row — not a likely prospect.

One possible solution: Let the school losing the home game be the “home” team (with more tickets) at a neutral site for a transitional year. UGA didn’t consider the Omni to be a neutral site and likely wouldn’t go for Philips Arena. But what about Gwinnett Arena? Then the next year the home-and-home could resume in lockstep with the football game.

Sounds like fun to me. What do you think about pairing up those games?

Just watched ala. spring game. Who in the hell is evaluating offensive line talent at UGA?! James Carpenter and Chance warmack are two Geargia road graders playing for the crimson tide! uga goes into ala. and gets ben jones and jonathan owens and Ala. comes into gorgia and gets two all-sec calibre offensive lineman. Combine that with the loss of Jujuan James to UT, and Ed Christian to AU and no wonder Richt is on the hot seat. He should be!

Sorry, but you can say you did not consider the OMNI a neutral site but it was. You usually had as many or more fans at the game and it’s not like Tech played other games there (they didn’t) Ya’ll are great at excuses.

As far as an alcohol sponsor for the UGA/UF football game I would love to see that just to see the wonderful press you would receive and the negative image you would get. Ya’ll will do anything for $$$ including selling your soul. I highly doubt though that the NCAA would allow such a thing.

Let’s dissect Roll Tide’s comment for a second. First Richt is not on the hot seat. That garbage is so dumb and played out. If he had kept Willie, yeah that would be accurate. Alabama has two All-sec quality lineman, shocker, so does GA. Ben Jones, a name you bring up is one of them. Clint Boling is another one and is being considered as a top OT by some for the NFL Draft coming next year. Next part, Ed Christian…not sure we even recruited. We have someone rated high higher coming in named Brent Benedict that we don’t even need to play because of the depth we have. Jujuan James, you know, the Tide decommit that is now at Tennessee, we did try to get twice but that is fine. Our OL recruiting has been fine and if you follow UGA recruiting you would know that it is going great for this year. So please, don’t worry about a strength of our team going into next year, we will be fine.

*Roll Tide* – please give it a rest… Besides Ben Jones and Clint Boling (whom James points out above), I’ll take Cordy Glenn over anyone in the conference at guard. Just please stop with the idiocy. Good for Bama coming into Georgia and picking off a couple nice OL prospects. We’re doing just fine without them – OL is far from our biggest issue. If Sturdivant comes back healthy, we’re going to be very good up front.

First of all, roll tard fans are, for the most part, very envious people. They come from the state of alabamer, and that in itself, is a reason to hate life. They are not as athletic as Georgians or Floridians, thus have to beg and pay for recruits to go there. Must I have to go on?

Dawg 39

I think our # 4 RB, D. Jackson is capable of running behind our OL for 100 yds. against any team we play. What does that say about our top 3 RBs? The OL has depth & is solid for at least the next 3 years.

There is no possible way Mark Richt cannot be in the hotseat. He has great recruiting classes every year and still is average in a league where averaqe is just not good enough. Mark Richt is probably one of the great coaches in college football but needs better supporting cast. If UGA does not win atleast the east within the next two years he leaves UGA. As far as the name of the game who really cares?

I would like to see UGA and tech play basketball twice a year – rotating one of the games on the school’s home court and playing the other game annually on a neutral site.

Besides playing our rival twice a season, this one also provide another nonconference game against a major college opponent without having to play a return game at the opponent’s ballyard. It would also be more cost effective than playing a home and home with another major opponent.

I am old enough to remember when UGA and tech played three times a year.

I have seen UGA play tech in basketball 54 times and the triple overtime game in the Omni (can’t remember the year)the most exciting game ever between the two.

Roll Tide…guess you haven’t been reading the national reviews of Georgias offensive line this coming season. They are far and away the best offensive line in the SEC this year…and they’ll prove why everyone is so high on them once the season kicks off.Chance and Warmack weren’t recruited hard by Georgia because their grades coming out of high school were terrible….you see Georgia has standards when it comes to admitting student athletes….Bama doesn’t …its pretty easy to get into Alabama. Thats why there are so many Georgia students going to school there….they couldn’t get in Georgia. When you consistantly put football before education you get people like you who couldn’t spell cat if we spotted you the C & T. ….Alabama never has been ranked very high as far as education is concerned and never will…..Can You Dig It!

The problem with making the game on Thanksgiving break is that the dorms are still closed. The dorms open the night of the Tech game at UGA so the students have a place to stay, but if they made the game that Friday, all the Freshmen and others who live in dorms at UGA would be forced to find a place to stay with a friend off campus. Its a terrible idea.

“If a Head Coach has confidence in his offensive line, he will act like it!”
Mark Right comments are tempered with caution and reservations.
Please ! No more about Trinton Sturdivant. Coach Richt has been using him as a “crying towel” for two years. The Dawg Nation wants Trinton Sturdivant to step up and perform and earn recognition. This O-line has had the same players for two years, they are experienced, yet have underperformed with mediocre running stats and results for two years. The Dawg Nation wants “Championships Plural” like Alabama, LSU and Florida. This requires an offensive line and running backs that are posting rushing stats at the top of the SEC. This Offensive line has rushed poorly against SEC opponents

I say buy out the contract. He apparently has been “Emeritus”, retired but on staff for four years. Hire Muschamp or Smart. Bring someone new in that is not looking to retire and soaking up $2.8 million per year plus endorsements and bonuses while he waits!

For those of you who think Mark Richt should be fired because, despite one of the top won-loss records in college football, he hasn’t won a National Championship, I submit the following:

Teams in NCAA (div 1)– 241 teams
Teams since the year 2000 that have won the National Championship– 8
That leaves 233 teams that have not won a National Championship during the Richt era. Should all 233 of those coaches be fired?

@Rogeriter – You entirely miss the point. Richt has had tremendous talent recruited to Athens in each of the last many years. However, that rich talent has not equated to results on the field. No one is asking him to make something out of nothing. The fact is that he STARTS with amazing talent out of high school. And, his lack of equitable results in Athens is WHY folks are mad.

So averaging 10 wins a season isn’t good enough? fantastic talent (which he recruited) is not always enough–no matter how good the coach! It takes a bit of luck also. I don’t think you remember that Vince Dooley also had great talenr, but one only one NC in his career(over thirty years). If talent and good coaching were enough, USC would have won more than one. So would Texas, Auburn and many others. You don’t remember the years that 8-5 would have been darn good! Any coach that can win an average of 10 wins a season in the SEC is a darmn fine coach!

Amsterdam Sam

May 30th, 2010

Rogeriter – the most sane, logical and accurate entry on this blog. Anyone who demeans any coach who has averaged 10 wins per year for a decade in the SEC is not quite sane or is delusional at the very least. Coach Richt has the third most wins of any active coaches and he, unlike the two above him, garnered all of his wins in the mighty SEC. Had LSU not jumped over us due to ESPN’s influence a couple of years ago afte the final; regular season poll, we would have been national champions that year (we finished number 2). Yes, indeed, luck, who the media likes (Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, etc.), and, sometimes, politics have much to say about who is mythically crowned national champ and will continue to do so until a playoff system is implimemted. Until then, no one will really know who the best team (ergo National Champion) is.

I believe Mark Richt is a class act and will continue to post excellent records along the lines of those he’s had his first 9 years at UGA. However, I also think he will never put UGA in a national championship game, especially as long as Meyer and Sabin are coaching in the SEC. If GA fans are satisfied or happy with 9-3, 8-4, 10-2, etc, seasons for the next 9+ years with no national championship opportunities, then Richt is the perfect coach. Obviously that was not good enough for FL and AL fans who apparently have much higher expectations. Richt is good, but he is not in the same league as Sabin and Meyer when it comes to competing for national championships.

Wow, who knew it was all so simple.

“FL and AL fans who apparently have much higher expectations”.

They have the ability to control the action of not only thier team but other as well, with thier expectations. We need to learn that.

Although obviously the FL did NOT have higher expectations than the AL fans last year.

And I suppose its clear to you that a HC’s future is set in stone based on his first nine years. Ask any coach and the will tell you that. Like Saban for example.

Mad Dawg that was just a stupid comment Richt has already proven he can beat both meyer and saban… those that post that recent crap about mark richt’s record against the sec east and all should also point out the fact at how pathetic our defense has been during those times. The past 4-5 years was not the True junkyard dawg defense that we will once see again. Teams better pray to The college football gods that uga does not catch on quick to Granthams 3-4 DEFENSE this season. Mark Richt has been snake bit, its as simple as that. A wide open dropped pass in 2002 causes Georgia a chance to play for the national championship and would of won. And 2005 DJ Shockley plays for a national championship if our fullback does not fumble the game to auburn and Shockley plays against Florida. And in 2007 Georgia finishes number 2 without a doubt knowing it was the best team in the nation.

BuLLdawg,

Once again you are wrong. You say in 2009 we were 0-5 in the SEC East. If you really were a dawg fan you would know that Richt has never gone less than .500 in SEC play. He was 4-4 last season and 4-4 in 2006. The only way he could be 0-5 in the SEC East is if his final conference record was 3-5 which has NEVER HAPPENED! I would love to find out who you really are so they can ban you from Sanford Stadium and block your cable or satelite system from viewing UGA games. You have no business associating anything Georgia or Bulldawgs with yourself. You sir are not a Dawg fan! You are a disgrace!

I hope Mark Richt is at UGA as long as he wants to be. He is loyal to the school. His loyalty to his staff probably hurt him. This is a guy that goes to visit a baseball player that is injured because he cares not only about the football program, but he cares about people. I hope he stays until he retires.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like FSU and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

” Men. It has been brought to my attention that a blogger in the ajc’s Junkyard Blawg has been unhappy with Georgia football over the last 4 years. A challenge has been laid upon our doorstep. Our newest Mission Statement reads we must beat all conference teams that may or may not be ranked in this and/or any season’s AP final poll from now till the end of time. Our goal is simply to never lose another game. Never ever. Stay loose, men.”

Everything will be perfect, no bashing, 7 or 8 National Championships. We may lose one because BuLLdawg I assume is human and can make a mistake. He won’t admit it and blame it on someone else.

I have some low level opinions about Illinois and Iowa ( they pistol whipped tech in the Urange ) but they matter not to the grads of those two universities. Fair is fair. My opinion about those universities, matters not.

Cool it with the vitriole and the UGA or SEC or ACC hatred.
