Bulldog Bites: Christian LeMay, Cocktail Party, Tech-Georgia weekend

(University of Georgia)

(University of Georgia)

Let’s head into the Memorial Day holiday weekend with some quick hits that you might want to discuss …

One more reason for Dogs fans to get stoked about Matthews, N.C., quarterback Christian LeMay saying he intends to enroll at UGA: In the first installment of the Sporting News Top 100 ranking for the football class of 2011, Lemay ranks a lofty No. 3. The other Georgia commitment making the list: defensive end Sterling Bailey of Gainesville at No. 95. …

When our Tim Tucker revealed that in the forthcoming new deal for the Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville the two schools will have the right to sell the name of the game, a coworker wondered aloud what they’d do if a beverage company like Seagram’s or Budweiser offered a bundle — especially since the UGA and UF presidents have discouraged the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party nickname.

While it’s amusing to consider, chances are they’d say no. You don’t see any alcohol product names on college football bowl games, and I don’t think Georgia and Florida would go down that road. …

Bulldogs Blog’s David Hale reports that according to Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt, UGA’s Mark Fox is going to get his wish to have the two schools’ annual basketball game moved earlier in the season while students are still on campus. Likely date this year: Dec. 7.

Hale notes that some fans have raised the notion of playing the basketball game the Friday night before the Dogs and Jackets meet in football, but that weekend generally conflicts with tournament play and students would be on Thanksgiving break.

Some friends and I debated this idea back when Fox first announced he wanted an earlier date, and we liked the prospect of making the annual in-state grude match a two-sport affair in the same city so fans easily could attend both. I don’t think Thanksgiving break would be much of a problem, since the students manage to turn up en masse for the football game the next day.

The main problem would be that the football and basketball series currently rotate between Athens and Atlanta in opposing years. Last season, for example, the football game was at Tech and the basketball game was in Athens. In order to pair the two sports, that rotation would have to be disrupted, which would require someone play on the road two years in a row — not a likely prospect.

One possible solution: Let the school losing the home game be the “home” team (with more tickets) at a neutral site for a transitional year. UGA didn’t consider the Omni to be a neutral site and likely wouldn’t go for Philips Arena. But what about Gwinnett Arena? Then the next year the home-and-home could resume in lockstep with the football game.

Sounds like fun to me. What do you think about pairing up those games?

For what its worth, SEC baseball tourney attendance pales in comparison to attendance at UVa Duke lacrosse tourney game. SEC missing the boat on lacrosse. But then again, the culture is not right in the SEC, saving for Vandy.

@Rogeriter – You entirely miss the point. Richt has had tremendous talent recruited to Athens in each of the last many years. However, that rich talent has not equated to results on the field. No one is asking him to make something out of nothing. The fact is that he STARTS with amazing talent out of high school. And, his lack of equitable results in Athens is WHY folks are mad.

when you say “everything will be just fine, or we will be just fine”, it is an indication that things are not just fine. It is an overused phrase that generally means problems, as in “Joe Cox will do just fine.”

So averaging 10 wins a season isn’t good enough? fantastic talent (which he recruited) is not always enough–no matter how good the coach! It takes a bit of luck also. I don’t think you remember that Vince Dooley also had great talenr, but one only one NC in his career(over thirty years). If talent and good coaching were enough, USC would have won more than one. So would Texas, Auburn and many others. You don’t remember the years that 8-5 would have been darn good! Any coach that can win an average of 10 wins a season in the SEC is a darmn fine coach!

Rogeriter – the most sane, logical and accurate entry on this blog. Anyone who demeans any coach who has averaged 10 wins per year for a decade in the SEC is not quite sane or is delusional at the very least. Coach Richt has the third most wins of any active coaches and he, unlike the two above him, garnered all of his wins in the mighty SEC. Had LSU not jumped over us due to ESPN’s influence a couple of years ago afte the final; regular season poll, we would have been national champions that year (we finished number 2). Yes, indeed, luck, who the media likes (Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, etc.), and, sometimes, politics have much to say about who is mythically crowned national champ and will continue to do so until a playoff system is implimemted. Until then, no one will really know who the best team (ergo National Champion) is.

The SEC East has been absolutely horrible for good Opponents for UGA the last 4 years, yet we are a miserable 10-10 vs SEC East teams the last 4 years including 5 of the 10 losses to unranked non-Top 25 Final AP Poll teams with only 1 win the last 4 years against a Final AP Poll Top 25 SEC East opponent.

We have not been very good the last 4 years. We are not viewed as having been any good the last 4 years, we are # 19 in the nation at 38-14 the last 4 years and we have played against sorry opponents in The SEC East the last 4 years.

Actually “others,” I believe there were 2, bolted because the coaches that recruited them were let go. Those boys were still on board after the 8-5 record was well in the books. Richt has an excellent history of getting early nods and hanging on to them.

And who the heck do you think are “held responsible” for recruiting results? My guess is the same guys it always is, the ones with the job.

I’ve lived several places in the SE USA, been around Bama, Auburn, UTENN, Arkansas fans, and let me tell you, the UGA fans take the cake. You have won no games of any consequence since 1980…1980!!! I believe Mark Richt is a class act and will continue to post excellent records along the lines of those he’s had his first 9 years at UGA. However, I also think he will never put UGA in a national championship game, especially as long as Meyer and Sabin are coaching in the SEC. If GA fans are satisfied or happy with 9-3, 8-4, 10-2, etc, seasons for the next 9+ years with no national championship opportunities, then Richt is the perfect coach. Obviously that was not good enough for FL and AL fans who apparently have much higher expectations. Richt is good, but he is not in the same league as Sabin and Meyer when it comes to competing for national championships.

AltamahaDawg

May 30th, 2010

Wow, who knew it was all so simple.

“FL and AL fans who apparently have much higher expectations”.

They have the ability to control the action of not only thier team but other as well, with thier expectations. We need to learn that.

Although obviously the FL did NOT have higher expectations than the AL fans last year.

And I suppose its clear to you that a HC’s future is set in stone based on his first nine years. Ask any coach and the will tell you that. Like Saban for example.

Mad Dawg that was just a stupid comment Richt has already proven he can beat both meyer and saban… those that post that recent crap about mark richt’s record against the sec east and all should also point out the fact at how pathetic our defense has been during those times. The past 4-5 years was not the True junkyard dawg defense that we will once see again. Teams better pray to The college football gods that uga does not catch on quick to Granthams 3-4 DEFENSE this season. Mark Richt has been snake bit, its as simple as that. A wide open dropped pass in 2002 causes Georgia a chance to play for the national championship and would of won. And 2005 DJ Shockley plays for a national championship if our fullback does not fumble the game to auburn and Shockley plays against Florida. And in 2007 Georgia finishes number 2 without a doubt knowing it was the best team in the nation.

BuLLdawg,

Once again you are wrong. You say in 2009 we were 0-5 in the SEC East. If you really were a dawg fan you would know that Richt has never gone less than .500 in SEC play. He was 4-4 last season and 4-4 in 2006. The only way he could be 0-5 in the SEC East is if his final conference record was 3-5 which has NEVER HAPPENED! I would love to find out who you really are so they can ban you from Sanford Stadium and block your cable or satelite system from viewing UGA games. You have no business associating anything Georgia or Bulldawgs with yourself. You sir are not a Dawg fan! You are a disgrace!

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like FSU and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
