No guarantee, but Richt sees possibility of ‘tremendous’ season

College football head coaches have to walk a fine line when talking to booster clubs.

On the one hand, the fans who gather in the spring and summer to hear the coach preview the forthcoming season are looking to get revved up.

But there’s always the danger of getting expectations too high, as Jim Donnan found out when he said before the 2000 season, “I’ve been waiting 55 years to be the head coach of a football team that has this much potential. And I guarantee you that we’re going to get it done.”

Mark Richt usually is a bit more circumspect, sort of in the Vince Dooley mode, though he did fire up one booster gathering earlier this spring by saying, “Are we going to beat Florida? You’re dadgum right.” To be fair, of course, he didn’t say it would necessarily be this season.

Richt walked the line on Wednesday night when he talked to the Georgia Bulldog Club in Albany. As reported by the Albany Herald, the coach said he believes that if his coaches can sign all the “Dream Team” in-state talent they’re after, those players will win a national championship before they leave UGA. As for the coming season, Richt said, “I think a lot of the ingredients are there for a tremendous season. We’ve just got to go out and do it.”

So, no Donnanesque guarantee, but a pretty optimistic outlook.

In other comments to the Albany club reported by the Herald, Richt said he nearly tried to hire Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator a month earlier than when he finally did make the offer. But, he said, “I’m not sure we would have gotten him then. I’m not going to say why, but circumstances changed.”

Discussing some of the southwest Georgia players on the team, Richt offered a couple of appraisals that should ease the minds of folks worried about the Dogs’ retooled secondary. He praised safety Bacarri Rambo, who said he might have picked up Grantham’s new 3-4 scheme the quickest of the defensive players. “He’s got a great understanding of what to do.”

And he said he thought cornerback Vance Cuff “was the most improved player in the spring. He’s fast —might be the fastest guy on the team.”

As for quarterback Aaron Murray, Richt kept expectations in check in Albany. He said he wants the redshirt freshman to have a “healthy respect” for the ball (don’t turn it over like Joe Cox, in other words). His advice to the inexperienced Murray, who has 10 returning offensive starters around him: “You don’t have to be the hero.”

An enthusiastic but safe outing for the coach, I’d say.

If CMR can manage his QB like Saban did McElroy in 2009, there will still be blunders (yeah, McElroy made a few) but the personnel is there to overcome them. For some reason, I still see Murray being responsible for at least one loss, ala the Crompton enigma, before he settles into a groove. The JAX event may actually be a fun game to watch this year…

I’ve seen CMR a couple of times in Valdosta, once in Jax and once in Albany on the tour. As much as I like the man….he always says the same things. Its more like a robotic script. I would suggest sending Grantham to do most of these speaking engagements. He’s the one everybody is wanting to talk to anyways. We had Garner come to Valdosta 3 years ago and I enjoyed hearing his spill more than MR’s. Nothing against Richt……but the assistant coaches are more frank and energized in their gigs. One funny note from an Albany bulldawg club meeting several years ago…..Mark Richt says, “Two more questions.” One guy asks about our tightends. Then for the last question, Richt calls on a lady two rows behind me and she asks, “Coach, when is picture day?” LOL Thank goodness Richt took one more question after that.

Look guys……the biggest problem over the last couple of years has been the turnover margin. I’m banking on Grantham and Lakatos will fix that on the defensive side of the ball. With Murray being a Redshirt freshman…..hopefully we will keep the ball on the ground more and when he does throw it….hopefully he’ll be smarter than Cox or Stafford. Yes….as much as some of you all thing Staff was the greatest, he still had a big bag of ints. If we can take those possessions and put points on the board vs. giving the other team those opportunities….we’ll be in good shape. 11 wins is very possible!!!!! I’d say damn likely. If we can win the turnover battle….we’ll win the games. plain and simple

Well, I feel better now. “We’ve just got to go out and do it”? Kind of hard to imagine that hasn’t been the lead-in for every season. It’s the “just” part that seems to trip them up. UGA has always had the talent. It has it this year. The fundamental question remains: Is the coaching staff good enough to exploit the talent it has and to overcome the challenges it has where the talent and experience are thin? So far, despite all the success CMR has undeniably had, this program is not placed among the elite in the SEC or nationally. It hovers in that gray space between mediocrity and excellence. This could be the year, with the schedule favoarable, for CMR to make his big move. But like in most years, if UGA loses to Florida because it’s expected to, loses another game because it’s out-coached, loses another because bad things happen to good teams, and maybe a fourth because it panics and gets stupid, then we’re right back saying “just” for 2011 and looking up at the elites again. CMR is a fine man and a good coach. This team has the players. Does it have the coaching?

Bobo has to come out and set the tone; not being so conservative. Hand the ball off, plus new recruits coming in, yeah Ga can win the SEC championship 3 of the next 4 years and three Nat’l, C’ship

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!

Agree with Richt’s assessment – I am thinking 9 wins minimum for the Dawgs – could win 10 – could win 11.

I predeicted a bad year for UGA last year – and got hammered by other posters – thought UGA would win nly 6 or 7 regular season games for three reasons:
1. Losing Stafford, Moreno, and MOMass
2. Decline of Defense was obvious
3. Schedule was tough – and the Tennessee loss was easy to predict as it followed LSU – Tennessee beat UGA a few years ago in a similar set up after UGA hammered LSU – a mediocre TN team beat a flat UGA team led by David Green

I think UGA bottomed out last year – Richt made the changes he needed to make on his staff – and are positioned well with a potentially great O-Line, good skill positions – and I think the QB will play well and improve as the season progresses – just got to stay healty.

Defense – very very atletic – set up nice for 3-4 and nickel will be no problem for this athletic unit – they just need to gel – and could easily revert back to a 4 -3 to mix it up.

A lot of If’s”
– South Carolina will be a great test
– Arkansas will be a scoring machine
– Have to take Miss State and Colorado seriosly – can not be flat in Boulder
– Tennessee, Vandy and KY should be No problem – if UGA is focussed.
– FLORIDA should be the favorite – they have the week off to prepare and have a great record against UGA when they have an open week before.
– AUBURN – will be very interesting – I think AU will be imprved and this is ALWAYS a game that has it’s history of surprises.
– GT – rivalry game – UGA should win – but a rivalry game can be unpredicatble – UGA will get a great effort from GT – they need to be ready to go!!

RECAP – UGA is positioned well for what I think will be a very good season!

Hope to meet up in the DOME!!!!!!

The early schedule has a couple of interesting games. South Carolina and Arkansas are not givens and Miss St looks to me like they’re gonna win a few games no one thinks they will. Tennessee Vandy, and Kentucky should all be wins. Florida looks like a loss. Idaho St is a gimme. Then Auburn and GT are both swing games. My guess is 8-4 or 9-3.

There are about 6 games that should (should!) be automatic – LA-Lafayette, Colorado, Tennessee, Vandy, Kentucky, and Idaho St. The almost definite loss is Florida. The other five games are toss ups. I would guess 2-3 or 3-2 in those five.

Plus, if that running game looks like it did against us, it won’t matter if you or I was the QB. It can’t be that tough to hand off to King or Ealey. Both Belue and Butler have said recentlythat “UGA always looks so small” when compared to a Alabama or LSU, or maybe even UT and Florida. These are the things that bother me about UGA lately.
We knew about the dead pan D side attitude under CWM & Co. or lack thereof a + attitude and we knew about MS and NM and their mechanical or robot like approach to the games …………. size vs the BIG BOYS in the SEC bothers me.

Butler and Belue are right on with their assessments of UGA’s size. Maybe our overall team speed can win some that we should not win. We need to win the BIG GAMES and stop the too frequent losses to KY. Low point in UGA history are those terrible KY losses.

2010 season will be here soon enough and will it be the start of a new UGA winning BIG era? I sure hope so.

Georgia isn’t going to lose for a Long, Long, time. That’s right, that means they get through this season without a loss, and load up with talent for next season and the years following. It’s called “going on a run”, a la’ USC.

If Richt can figure out how to build confidence early, with some dominating early wins, and some early game play (dominate 1st 2 quarters), look out.
Defense:
Grantham is very good. The best in the SEC, perhaps the best in the nation. Let’s oput it this way, Saban tried to hire him, and Muschamp endorsed him for hire to Richt. Grantham is superb. And the Belin and Lakatos hires were brilliant. The defense will be back to a top 20 defense.

Special Teams:
Punter, Kicker, best in nation. Kick off returns terrible last year (gave up 30 yards a return), and directional kicking was a bust.

Offense:
Best O-Line in nation, best RB trio Ealey/King/Smith, Best WR–Green, Best TE trio–Charles/White/Lynch. QB play was horrendous. Need efficiency in td to int ratio.

Bottom line:
If start 3-0, will ride momentum to win SEC and National Championship.

Richt’s right about Murray. Jury is out, and he’s on a short leash after his Spring interception-a-rama (Murray threw more int’s than td’s in 3 srping games—3 int’s—2 td’s). If Murray falters, Gray or Mason will be more than ready.

The offense and special teams has to carry Georgia for the 1st 3 games until the defense learns the 3-4. If Georgia can inch by South Carolina & Arkansas, the defense will be ready to carry the team by the Florida game. And Richt dominates South Carolina & Ga Tech head to head.

The schedule sets up for Richt—not too many years Richt will see an offense this good, a punter/kicker combo this good, and a defense this strong.

Richt is so right about this year’s recruiting class. We need Lemay to lead, and lasso em’ in. He’s the QB in the country, he needs to bring the talent with him, raid that ESPN TOP 150.

Note:
Georgia ALREADY HAS 7 of the ESPN TOP 150. And it’s only May. Dream team in route. Grantham, Belin, Lakatos, Garner all need to get there dream guys too.

Anyone can get lucky 1x, but it takes greatness to sustain it. Richt’s the man for the job, if anyone can set a new record for consecutive wins, it’s Mark Richt.

Dan, my 2 cents…. I left the G-Day game with an uneasy feeling about Murray. He got a little rattled. But, bottom line, I agree with you on O, we will probably run the ball down a lot of team’s throats in 2010. Murray won’t resemble Stafford in any form or fashion.

On D, lots of good things coming….emphasis on fundamentals, better tackling, DBs playing tighter, not worrying about crossing boundries, pressure, pressure, pressure, etc. We’ll make some mistakes early, but the D should show a pattern of sustained improvement over the season. Grantham, Belin, and Lakatos are a huge improvement on our staff.

SC, Arkansas, Florida, and Auburn will be very tough SEC games for us this year. We win the rest of our schedule. UGA goes 6-2 (or better) in the SEC and wins the East. Conventional wisdom says you lose a couple with a freshman QB.

The two biggest criticisms I’ve heard about UGA football over the last few years have been the directional kick-offs and the soft zone prevent defense, and in spite of these, we still won a bunch of football games. Unfortunately, having talented players isn’t enough when you play other teams with talented players. An offense normally has a big advantage because it should know what it’s doing, but the defense doesn’t. The best way to counter that is to confuse the offense at to whats coming and where it’s coming from. With the new scheme and personel, I can see how Mark Richt is excited.

Keep in mind that some day you’ll need Murray to bring you back, so all you people who want to run a conservative game and hang on to a lead and hold your breath until the buzzer rings should be preparing yourselves for a loss or two. CMR teams tend to not blow anyone out, rather they allow people to stick around to the very end, and some times things just don’t work out. Hopefully the defense will be holding the other teams down, and the offense can score and get a few scores up. What’s wrong with attacking and putting the other team back on their heels. You have all of these great receivers and you’re still talking about the next coming of a Herschel Walker type of running game. Keep with that style of play and UGA will be finishing behind the same teams. Open up the offense and if Murray can’t get it done, then dial it back. Better to be aggressive and make the other team work, than to be predictable and just hanging on like it has been the past few years. Just an opinion.

Last season was just a few turnovers and/or calls away from being a heck of lot better than it turned out. Not blaming things on the schedule, but the last two have been brutal. Not so much the teams but the arrangement. There was a season or two under Green and then DJ, that a lighter schedule seem to hurt. The guys didn’t have to overcome that confidence building hurdle or two. The Gators suffered from that last year. The timing of big games and rivals is crucial. This year’s schedule looks ripe for UGA. Enough challenges and enough breathers. It is not insurmountable; it is not a blow over.

The year UF won the NC with Leak and Tebow, they fielded one of the best teams in college football history, and they played a the tough schedule. I will give them that. Ron Zook had put together won helluva team. The second NC was all Tebow and Charlie Strong.

How2fish, I’d agree we’ve been terrible in bowl games the last 2 years but give me a break with the bad teams in bad conferences stuff. LSU was one year removed from a national championship and plays in the SEC, which even I can admit is the best conference hands down. And Iowa had more future NFL players on their roster this year than any other team in the country. Look at all of the players they had drafted this year and all of the players who stayed who are projected to be picked on the first day of next year’s draft. I can tell you that I didn’t give them enough credit and went to Miami expecting to steamroll them. But I came away with a different point of view- that Iowa team was loaded. Seems like the entire defense will end up playing on Sundays..

For what its worth, I think Georgia will have a good season. I would just think by now the Dawg nation and CMR would have learned to shut his pie hole. You have more offseason NC’s than any team in the country.

Georgia is starting a Freshman QB, Implementing a brand new defense without actually having the opportunity to recruit the right players to fit the system, have the same offense that struggled to run the ball last year until the last 3 games against mediocre teams. All this talk about UF being down is ridiculious and only proves the obsession that UGA fans have with UF. What many dawg fans dont know is who really is calling the offense.

I know Richt gives Boo Boo several plays that must be called

I know there are many calling for BOO BO to leave but I dont know about that because Richt still has a hand in the play calling

The reason I say that is because the offense hardly ever seems to function on all cylinders and we seem to stay stuck on certain plays all the time instead of changing it up. Its like there is a tug of war going on with Richt and BooBO during the games

right now as we speak, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, and all others’ coaches are feeding to the players that the only acceptable goal is the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP yet 119 of them will be singing a different tune at the end of the year. so Florida fans, Alabama fans, Tech fans, and all others, THAT is why UGA fans like myself ask for and expect championships EVERY SEASON. because the ONLY acceptable goal is a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

I see the Techies still have nothing better to do than come to UGA blogs and pretend like they matter. Let me remind you clowns, Tech had it’s one in every ten years good season, best they’ll have for a while. While UGA had a down season. And you still got beat. You’re going nowhere, the wishbone has been exposed now that people have had time to prepare for it. You won’t even finish in the top half of the ACfreakingC next year. Book it.

And kudos to Richt for putting the goal where it needed to be all along. Winning a NC. The talent is there and with a new DC and no more soft zone coverages all the time, they’ll be much better. Murray will be solid and any QB with a reciever like AJ Green has the opportunity to have a monster season.

BEAT FLORIDA – This comment is exactly why UF fans do not take UGA seriously. Probably the dumbest comment I have ever read. Please tell me you weren’t being serious. I guess you could have made this same ignorant statement 17 out of the last 20 years….right? Or did Tebow play all 17 years and NOW that he is finally gone UGA has a chance? You guys are Preseason SEC & National Champs every year, so that is something to be proud of.

last year’s UF-UGA game:

Tebow/Cooper-2 TDs-14 points gone: 27-17
Tebow running-2 TDs-14 points gone: 17-13
Brandon Spikes-INT TD-7 points gone: 17-6
Cox/Moore-TD 7 points gone: 10-6

those are all playes who are gone thus their points are gone and subtracting those the final score is 10-6 UGA

Isn’t this the same kid that was involved in the armed robbery fiasco at UT? The only difference here is, he didn’t have a gun this time.

By the way, when UT turns over their students and/or athletes to local authorities for prosecution for underage drinking (as UGA does) then you have a comparison, right now you don’t.

Richt is sounding a little desperate right now, but Bulldog nation will believe anything at this point. Bottom line: He’s got a freshman QB and a new DC who will be working with the same overrated, underachieving talent that will lose to Tennessee (yes, Dooley’s Vols will take that game) and Florida. The final nail in the coffin, however, will come between the hedges in November, where Tech will avenge the cheap shot on Nesbitt in Atlanta last season and win comfortably, sending Richt into early retirement and Paul Johnson to his second BCS bowl game and another step toward the return of Tech football to national prominence…

It’s unreasonable to expect the defense to be outstanding, or even good. Any time you bring in a new system on offense or defense, there are growing pains-sometimes severe. The offense has a chance to be good, but if Murray doesn’t step up and do much better than he has shown so far the the Dawgs are in for a long year. Defenses will stack the box and make him beat them through the air.

As far as a “Dream Team” recruiting haul, it could happen (but I doubt it), and unless CMR and staff start coaching up a “team” then it doesn’t matter who is signed..

Florida will not win the SEC East. Close, but won’t win it. Their schedule is too difficult. So Georgia or South Carolina will win the East, and you have to believe it is Georgia’s to lose because SC also plays a very tough schedule. Georgia could lose to Florida yet again and still win the East. I’ll say this, I would not want to play Georgia, Florida OR Alabama at the end of this season. All three are going to be better by then. Jury is still out on Auburn and SC. Arkansas is also a mystery, but not going to be surprised if they win the West and freak out everyone. Arkansas will likely beat Georgia in Athens if I had to point to one game that sneaks up on the Dawgs. The one game that I HOPE is a blowout 9and could be really ugly) is the Tennessee win.

Look. Murray will be fine. It’s going to take some luck in certain situations to go undefeated. But, it can be done! Richt and Bobo have to stop calling plays that are too conservative and get a bit more aggresive. They think too much some times and don’t let nature take its coarse “so to speak”. Perfect example was with M.Stafford. The guy had more ability w/ the football than T.Tebow had in his pinky. Why we didn’t kill UF while he was with us will make your head spin if you think about it too long. UF would have never been able too figure me out if I was the coach and had that talent. But give Meyer credit. He didn’t have too think too hard when it came to us. He knew what we were bringing to the table. To whip someone you have to know them. It’s called homework, not preaching. CMR has got to get his priorities in the proper order when it comes to the profession he has chosen. i love what he is doing for young men with needs, but football in the sec is it. Passion is it. God never said, “don’t be passionate”. CMR can say what he wants. But this team will go how He wants it too go. Period. He is the Capitain of the ship. It took five years to see that CWM was not the guy he should have had as DC. Lets hope this is a well learned lesson, because 10 years in there are no more excuses that can be used.

Mark, Don’t think for one minute that just because Florida’s had the number 1 recruiting classes the last two year that there is not going to be a decline in your team. Yes, you have the same position coaches, but any time you have a turn over with a coach that’s as good as Charlie Strong its going to make a difference, so don’t be surprised if your number 1 recruiting classes don’t live up to expectations.

Unfortunately, if the Dawgs go 8-4 or God forbid 7-5 again this regular season, that supposedly “Dream Team” of recruiting will become the “In Your Dream Team” and a literal nightmare. If there were further staff firings (see:Mike Bobo), guys like LeMay could decide to take their skills elsewhere. And you can bet that if that happens then the Richt talk will heat up dramatically and create doubts for 2011. That would set back recruiting and the program that much more and allow Florida to put even more space between them and the East as I don’t see Tennessee doing anything for a couple of years. South Carolina will be the wild card in the East this year…maybe.

I think 10 wins is achievable. I also think that UF, having a tough schedule, a Head Coach on Xanax, a no name DC, and a new QB … well let there expectations be through the roof. Go Gators. Brantley is incredible. The talent pool is unheard of. The Gators will win the NC in 2010. In fact, the NFL will then invite them to play in the Super Bowl afterward. They are so good, that everyone down there should spend the whole summer smoking Gainesville green. Bama, too, those guys don’t need to practice anymore. The D while questionable has some gems, and some of those gems have yet to emerge. The D will be more aggressive and more fundamentally sound, that goes with out saying. I am not promising an NC or SEC championship, but winning the East is a plausible consideration. I don’t think anyone should lose their mind and send moving vans to the Richt estate if the Dawgs drop a game early. All things considered, this is a crucial year for the coaches and the program as a whole. Win the East, and UGA solidifies a whole lot of big time recruiting.

chazzo what’s not to love… this is the only version I ever heard now I’ve seen others but growing up this is what the radio stations signed off with and was played at sporting events.

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin’
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I’ll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

That being said while the song in itself is not offensive, However I understand that since it is related with images of soldiers in grey and hence to many an image of Southern Heritage and Pride it also triggers images of the KKK and civil rights violations that make many Americans Black and White uncomfortable, so I can understand and agree with the decision to not play it. However as a song itself it’s a catchy tune and fun to sing along with. IMHO

Countless lyrical variants of “Dixie” exist, but the version attributed to Dan Emmett and its variations are the most popular.[4] Emmett’s lyrics as they were originally intended reflect the mood of the United States in the late 1850s toward growing abolitionist sentiment. The song presented the point of view, common to minstrelsy at the time, that slavery was overall a positive institution.
Dixie:

The pining slave had been used in minstrel tunes since the early 1850s, including Emmett’s “I Ain’t Got Time to Tarry” and “Johnny Roach”. The fact that “Dixie” and its precursors are dance tunes only further made light of the subject.[12] In short, “Dixie” made the case, more strongly than any previous minstrel tune had, that slaves belonged in bondage.[13] This was accomplished through the song’s protagonist, who, in comic black dialect, implies that despite his freedom, he is homesick for the plantation of his birth:

chazzo

Let me put a fine point on it. It is a slave who is supposedly singing “I wish I was in the land of cotton” because the lyricist(s) felt that’s where he belonged. Any further questions as to why the SEC did away with playing it as a symbol for the schools.

chazzo I find your revisionist history on the supposed behavior of Bama fans even funnier than you claim to find yourself . ALL I heard and saw during the time that Bama was having down years was how ARROGANT Tide fans were because they refused to accept it . In fact it wasn’t just bumble head fans of other programs pumping that crap … the spectacularly unimaginative press followed suit as well .

A blizzard of “The Bear is Dead” and any gleeful b******t commentary that could be hurled WAS hurled from EVERY direction and frankly it only SLIGHTLY died after the Tide stomped their way through an undefeated season .

Yeah … Bama fans were “arrogant” during the program’s slump because they refused to accept it . “Arrogant” because they refused to believe a competent coach would never take on the high expectations in Tuscaloosa . “Arrogant” when they hailed Saban as the Man his first day on the job.

And you are now trying to sell that Tide fans were “sheepishly quiet and humble” before Saban came to Bama ? Get the f*** out of here :-)

You are either being willfully ignorant of just WHO and WHAT Bama fans have ALWAYS been good times AND bad … OR you are still in your teen years and trying to remember back further than 3 seasons ago predates your arrival into puberty .

You certainly aren’t the only one I have seen trying to peddle that broken bicycle down the street . I just find it funny to think back to the same clowns who were calling Bama fans “arrogant” and “living in the past” for nearly a decade right up until the start of the last season are now claiming Bama fans were “no where to be found” or “sheepishly quiet”. ;-)
