Richt to opponents: Guess what, we’re throwing to A.J.

Mark Richt says everyone knows Georgia wants to get the ball to A.J. Green. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

Mark Richt says everyone knows Georgia wants to get the ball to A.J. Green. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

The common theme of many preseason assessments of the 2010 Dogs has been that with an inexperienced quarterback, a veteran offensive line and two good (possibly great) tailbacks, Georgia is likely to lean heavily on its running game.

And to an extent, that’s probably going to be true. At least early in the season, while Aaron Murray gets his first game experience, the offense might not be quite as balanced as Mark Richt and Mike Bobo generally would prefer.

But the way a Richt offense works, a successful running game opens up the passing game, and vice versa. And with a weapon like A.J. Green in their arsenal, not to mention a slew of tight ends who are talented receivers, the idea that Richt and Bobo are going to be offering up Dooleyball this season is pretty unrealistic.

Richt said as much this week speaking to fans in Macon. “If we don’t throw the ball to A.J., we’re not very smart,” he said. “We better get the ball to A.J. Green, and I don’t think it’s a news flash to any defense that we’re going to get the ball to A.J.”

Everyone knows Green will be the Dogs’ top target, and Richt is basically saying to opponents: Stop him if you can.

Of course, if defenses load up on A.J., that makes it more likely Rantavious Wooten or Tavares King or Kris Durham is open. And then there’s those tight ends, led by Orson Charles and Aron White.

As Richt put it talking about the tight end position: “For a while there, whether through injuries or recruiting, we didn’t quite have the guys who could become a mismatch for a linebacker or safety, but we have that now. So we’ll definitely use the tight ends, and I’d imagine we’ll have more two tight-end sets than we have since the days of having Watson and McMichael at the same time.”

Ah yes, those were good times.

So, yeah, Washaun Ealey and Caleb King are going to get plenty of carries this fall. But the Dogs’ young quarterback isn’t likely to just be handing off the ball.

Does that put a certain amount of pressure on Murray to make smart decisions and avoid Coxian picks? Sure. And you can bet that defensive coordinators will be crowding the box to try and shut down Georgia’s running game and force Murray to throw.

With targets like Green and Charles, though, that strategy might come back to bite them.

IF YOU’RE KEEPING TRACK …

Georgia has made a preseason Top 20. The Athlon Sports 2010 College Football Annual has UGA at No. 15.

Their somewhat outdated analysis of Georgia’s offense is based on the idea that Logan Gray is still in the running for starting QB and that the Dogs will have to lean heavily on the run, opining that A.J. Green “may go hungry for a while.” But, they say, “With that rushing attack and a 3-4 defense that is light only in the secondary (stud corner Brandon Boykin excepted), Georgia should be just fine until Gray or redshirt freshman Aaron Murray comes around.”

Of course, as the Senator noted, you have to hope they didn’t base their Top 20 prediction on the version of the Georgia schedule that they have on their Web site, which is missing a certain game in Jacksonville.

Let’s hope the defenses load the box and force us to throw. With Green, Durham, Wooten, King and Charles, I could burn ‘em throwing the ball and I’m 64 years old. Murray has a good arm and can complete passes against man coverage if given time. Plus, he is more mobile than any QB we’ve had as a starter recently. The offense should be fine. Only time will tell how the defense will do. We clearly have some holes there. I do like the new philosophy on dfense to attack, attack, attack.

DD – I agree that this year we should (must) get a win in Jax. However, anyone who thinks Florida won’t be very good has not been paying attention. Urban Meyer can coach and he has tons of talent at every position, including Brantly at QB. Beating them will not be easy, but I agree we need to beat them this year.

The Georgia secondary hopefully will get some help from the coaching staff this year. There were too many TV shots where Boykin (and the others) were frozen in place, nowhere within 10 yards of a receiver.

I’m not worried about the Offense this year. We’ll average 35+ points per game. I just hope the defense can keep the opposing team out of the end zone this year. If the defense can play discipline football; much less penalties, less broken assignments and just bust some people in the mouth they will be ok. There are so many things that need to improve that it’s hard to accomplish in one year. I sure hope I’m wrong though.

I never knock the gators talent. UM has done a great job there. Both teams have new DC’s and you never know which way that will work out for any team. Charlie Strong is a dream DC for any college. Those are tough shoes to fill. Most people don’t give Aaron Murrya much credit because they have not seen him play. I know that there is big difference between HS & College, but this guy is a gamer. Not close to the overall talent that Tebow had, but the same heart and determination. Brantley will be good as well. Has played in a few games but has yet to take the every day beating the SEC gives out. We will hear a lot about both QB’s by years end.
Anyway, I think both schools have a lot to look forward to this coming season.

AJ Green is the key to our offense, period! The fact that he is on the field changes everything. His speed makes him a deep threat. He doesn’t actually have to even catch the ball… just pump fake and throw it deep to AJ in the first or second set of downs against SC and the table is set. If another receiver can step up… and a threat in the middle of the field, say Orson Charles or Marlon Brown on a crossing route… then look out! You cheat up, we throw it over your head. If the safeties play the deep ball then we run it down hill. Safeties cheat up… we make them pay. I don’t expect ultra conservative playing calling for one second this season. There really is nothing to lose that you won’t lose by being too conservative anyway. The O-line is not a big question mark… it’s whether or not we have a viable blocker/ball carrier at tailback for the play action. We are going to be run heavy and short pass/high percentage pass heavy any to control the clock and set up the deep ball.

After I have been to so many in Jax since the 70’s it all boils down in most cases to the best and better prepared team winning. I have seen very few surprises over the years. I always have liked when the game is played because each team has played enough games to give the fans a pretty good indication of how it will probably turn out. But them of course there are always exceptions to that on both sides.

To make this a true rivalry again CMR needs to get that monkey off his back. I like the coaching changes that he has made. Time will tell if they pan out. I have always hated last year’s game coming out with the different uniform. I kind of liked the black helmets, but do it for a permanent change at the beginning of the season not just for one game. The “Blackout” game against Auburn was great, but it should have been laid to rest after that.

Good point. He did get comfortable. I think he felt the fire some last year when we got kicked by a sub-par UT team. The Alumni was starting to call for his head. Something that he was not use to. I think it was an eye opener AND I also think he has gotten more aggressive this year. I applaud him for kicking Mett off the team. It was the right move. He needs to keep discipline on that team and it will go a long way.

The team does take on the personality of the coach. Again, hopefully with CMR getting more aggressive it will mean the team does as well. Myer is a great coach and knows how to get the most out of his kids no doubt. Most UGA people recognize that. For that we don’t like him. ; )

We should have beaten UF in 2008, but we had way too many mental issues. Moreno and Stafford weren’t in it, receivers were dropping balls, Defense was still under WM. We had all the talent and the capacity to do it, it was just poor team unity and execution.

2009 would have been closer had we not shot ourselves in the foot with 4+ turnovers. UF scored on 4 of those turnovers. Take back the turnovers and the game was 24-17. UF didn’t do anything special to make the turn overs happen, we just gave the ball away. Hopefully that will NEVER happen again.

DGD, for three years 2007, 2008, 2009 we have seen the defense get progressively worse. We know that Richt had his best man as DC. It was a tough tough move for him. Remember the Tech game last year? We didn’t throw a pass for God knows how long. I think Richt had a lot to do with that game planning and I think he will be in on it more this year. One very tough decision behind him I think he will have a much better handle on it this year. The UT game will tell us everything IMO. Whip UT ten ways to Sunday and we will know that Richt has changed for the better. Struggle in that game and we will know it is the same old same old. We have had a better team than UT for most of this decade and yet they have stomped us consistenly, we have failed to get off the bus. Just my opinion.

What? No Richt bashers talking about how dumb ol’ Richt is tipping his hand by saying he is going to throw the ball to a pre-season All American? You guys are slipping! This is the time of year when I try to think up oddball plays because I am bored and have nothing better to do. How about a three TE formation with Figgins, Lynch, and Charles lined up tight and then splitting Charles out wide? Even a rookie QB could watch the safetys call run or pass at the line.

You’re not going to win the SEC throwing the ball.

We need to ride the running game trio all the way: Ealey/King/Smith

AJ needs to contribute like Julio did for Alabama, good numbers, do what’s best for the team.

AltamahaDawg

Then wouldn’t that be throwing the ball?

Jeff

May 14th, 2010
2:36 pm

There are a few games where AJ can actually be the difference, maybe Arkansas, Auburn & Ga Tech, all 3 teams have a porous defense.

AJ needs to play big for the moments in the games where Georgia is facing 8 men in the box, that’s when he is most needed, say the South Carolina or Florida game. Just make some key plays in those games.

AJ Needs to play extremely well when Georgia faces a weak defense: Ga Tech, Arkansas, and Auburn.

AJ also can be a difference maker in the red zone.

AJ can often be a decoy, and set up his teammates.

Jeff

May 14th, 2010

Julio contributes by being a decoy, and by blocking, and by making plays when needed.

Jeff

May 14th, 2010

AJ needs to put team first this year, and realize, if he goes down in an injury again, for the 3rd straight year, he’s really hurting the team. He needs to care enough about his teammates to stay healthy for at least 1 season. If he doesn’t, his NFL stock will fall and it will cost him ten million. We need AJ to be more Julio than TO this year

Blah Blah Blah

Ive heard this kind of big talk for years, and personally I used to get my hopes up, but reality bites.

We will go down to Jacksonville with a conservative play calling scheme and hope FL can’t stop us.

The play calling scheme will also have a new set of uniforms in the hopes of they will get distracted for a QTR or two in the hopes we can jump out in front.

If that doesn’t work we will not change anything, but just sit and watch our teeth get kicked in again.

The one thing that Urban has done that seems to give Florida an advantage over UGA every year, is scheduling. It seems like
Florida always has their by-week before UGA. UGA, on the other hand, does not. This is the case again this year. An extra week of preparation and rest does make a difference. When Dooley was here, this was opposite, with UGA getting the bye, and Fla playing consecutive weeks, and the results reflected that.

shane#1

DGD, if two tight ends lined up in a power run formation is considered spreadish maybe somebody needs to re-think something.

Dooley Time

May 14th, 2010

The keys are going to be rushing game, defense, scoring margin and and turnovers. Since your passing game can help with scoring, it counts, but it can also make you more apt to commit turnovers. So you need to pass enough to keep the defenses honest. And the passing attack must be efficient, at least a +4 touchdown to interception ratio.

DGD, yep, I said that right, for a change. Go with Green and the three TEs I named, plus the RB of your choice. Then split Charles out wide and leave the other two TEs in tight. Figgins is like having another OT in the game and Lynch is also a load at 6′6″ and 260. So you are in a power run formation, just minus a FB. If the D tries to cover Charles with a CB you have a mismach, if they cover him with a safety then a tackler is out of the box. If the FS drops back to help out with the pass two potential tacklers are out of the box, if he stays in close you have Green in single coverage. There are so many options with this play if Murray does his job something will work. On a lighter note, hey Dawg fans, want to help out our country cousins at Auburn? You can vote for a new AU fight song! Orson Swindle at EDSBS is getting everybody to vote for a song by some kid named Beirber, or something like that. I am not up a teenybopper’s musical taste. One poster suggested the theme from “Green Acres” but that strikes too close to home for a South Georgia boy. “Green Acres” is shown on GPTV down here in the “Bill Moyers Journal” slot.

DGD, if I have to send plays to Athens we are in big trouble! I have never been a head coach and have never coached or played D-1 football. I do like Grantham’s style looking for mis-matches. Why not look for mis-matches on offense? UGA has four good but very different TEs. Why not make use of all of them and try to get single coverage for A J whenever possible? A starting slot has been a motivational tool for coaches forever, but I think starting is being over stressed at UGA. You have talented guys that can contribute in different ways so don’t let their talent go to waste by leaving them on the bench

Jerry, We’ll be fine, as long as we’re not giving up more than 19. If we can keep the other teams offense off the field, and win the field position battle, it’s got to be better. AJ is not thick enough to take the hits. He gets the quick pass outside a few times last year and breaks off a run only to get slammed to the ground by the defense. Once slammed, he had to sit out.

“I don’t do jumping jacks like some people do when they’re excited, but I can promise you, I’m as excited about this season as I have been for any one since I’ve been at Georgia,” Richt said. “I think we’ve got the right stuff.”

The last coach to make such a statement as that preseason here, was Jim Donnan. Then, he went out and lost his 13 th game in his last 4 years here and was fired, instead, by Michael F. Adam$.

Coach Richt has already lost 14 games his last 4 years here and was stubborn about keeping Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator despite our only 10-10 SEC East record the last 4 years now. Once Coach Richt decided to keep Mike Bobo, then Coach Richt had to DEMOTE Mike Bobo admitting Bobo is not a good Offensive Coordinator and that Coach Richt then was taking over complete responsibility for the offense from Mike Bobo.

2006 no QB ready, lost 4 games. 2009 no QB ready, lost 5 games. 2010 no QB ready and Coach Richt is the most excited about this season of all the entire Decade of Coach Richt Era. Coach Richt, that is just plain stupid to make that statement in Macon last night, sir.

53 Wins overall vs SEC starting 2001 by LSU
52 Wins overall vs SEC starting 2001 by Georgia

Mr. King, I disagree… A.J. Green is not a key to UGA’s offense. He’s a known quantity. The key is to get A.J. the ball; therefore, the key player is Aaron Murray. Aaron is going to have to learn to read SEC defenses and make 2nd & 3rd WR passing adjustments within milliseconds. That’s the key!

Last 2 times we were in this situation, we lost 4 games in 2006 breaking in a new quarterback and 5 games 2009 breaking in a new quarterback.

What makes this year any different ?

The funny truth about the posts is that I say we are going to be 9-4 or 10-3, and NONE of you think we will be any better than that.

What makes you think Aaron Murray is more seasoned than th 3 quarterbacks we had in 2006 ?

Aaron Murray has NEVER taken a snap under center in his lifetime.

Last year, Aaron Murray missed 21 Fall Practices because some coach let him THROW HIS THROWING ARM

out

The year before that a lineman in high school caught him from behind and tackled him breaking his leg and injuring his ankle.

He is 4.7 in the 40-yard dash.

Defensive Linemen in The SEC are FASTER than that.

Go ahead walkerdawg, sir,

I said 10-3 or 9-4.

What is your prediction, if you think I am so negative.

We have a great defense this season, our best in 30 years

We have the 2 best kickers in America on one team.

What we don’t have is a seasoned quarterback.

Or, ANYONE behind him when he gets injured.

He is NOT 200 lbs.

He is NOT 6 feet tall.

He is small, injury prone

NEVER taken a snap under center

In the 3 scrimmages, he threw the MOST interceptions

he threw the FEWEST Touchdown Passes.

He threw 5 deeper type passes in the G-Day game, all were OVERTHROWN

That was in front of 39,000 fans at Sanford Stadium.

Why am I negative you ask walkerdawg.

Well, excuse me we have 1 QB and he is NOT READY according to Coach Richt last night in Macon.

Coach Richt said last night in Macon that he doesn’t know the playbook and that he needs reps

He needed reps last year.

He could NOT get them.

He was injured.

21 Practices he missed from an arm he threw out

He also was recovering from the ankle injury and the leg injury

We have NO ONE behind him.

This year he could not get his reps either.

Logan Gray held Coach Richt HOSTAGE

Made him split the snaps under center with the # 1 unit with Logan Fringin Gray.

Gray has been in this system now for this today his 4th year.

Gray has 2 interceptions, 0 touchdown passes and 5 completions.

Is this where you tell me about Hutson Mason ? Or Christian LeMay who won’t be here for another 12 months.

No, this is where you tell me we are beating Florida this year.

I am not negative; you are out of your ever-loving mind.

Now, go ahead and put your 10-3 or 9-4 up there and let me read you said we will do better than that, which is what I have said all along.

The best thing that can happen is that they get Murray comfortable and turn him loose. They definitely need to lean on the running game and not get too cute, like Bobo did sometimes with Cox, but let Murray do what he can do well.

Georgia will depend on a dominating running game until Murray gets enough experience and confidence to make a difference. You have the O-Line to make that happen. As long as you are ahead, or down no more than a touchdown, you will be in the game. Richt’s goal is to not let Murray get rattled, and that means simple plays. If the other team stuffs the line, you will have to show some patience and accept quite a few three and outs. Otherwise, you will be setting Murray up for some mind numbing blitzes….

Not bashing here. I have a serious question. How do you expect to have this great running game when your best three rushing games were against the three worst defenses you faced? I am not taking anything away from your RBs, they both have NFL potentiol. I am just curios because opposing Ds are definitely going to presure your QB and look for the run. I hope UGA does great so GT can hopefully pull out the win when your ranked to get some payback.

Great! Maybe Aaron Murray can throw to Marlon Brown; Oh I’m sorry he will be standing on the sideline for another 2 years while Richt decides if he is good enough to play.
