Who’s likely to be the Dogs’ next star out of nowhere?

Will Kris Durham become an SEC star this season? (AJC staff)

Will Kris Durham become an SEC star this season? (AJC staff)

Asked in a mailbag column what SEC players he sees coming “out of nowhere to be star players this year,” ESPN.com’s Chris Low included Georgia wide receiver Kris Durham, returning from a year off due to injury, along with South Carolina safety DeVonte Holloman, Arkansas defensive end Jake Bequette, Tennessee running back Tauren Poole, Florida linebacker Jon Bostic, Kentucky linebacker Danny Trevathan and Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf.

Low’s opinion of Durham jibes with my own, which was reinforced by watching Durham make some really impressive catches in the recent G-Day game. With coverage focusing on A.J. Green, Georgia’s other wide receivers are likely to get some nice opportunities this season, and lanky No. 16 seems ready to rise to the occasion in his senior year.

But do you see any other Dogs making such a move out of the shadows into the spotlight? We’re not talking established stars like Green and Washaun Ealey here. Or heavily spotlighted players like Aaron Murray. And I don’t count Justin Houston in this category because he impressed enough people last season that just about everyone is expecting big things of him this year. Ditto Orson Charles.

Besides Durham, I think Vance Cuff in the secondary, one of the most impressive players of the spring, might make a big move this season. Anyone else on your “star” radar?

(By the way, in that same column Low also addresses the A.J. Green vs. Julio Jones debate, saying he would have given the nod to Jones as the better receiver in the two players’ freshman seasons and to Green last year. This season, likely to be the last year of college ball for both players, should decide a winner, he says. Feel free to chime in on that, too.)

WR is the best place to look, could be Wooten, or Branden Smith could play a Percy Harvin impact-he’s averaging 12 yards a carry. Both all Parade All Americans and looked great in the Spring scrimmages. Durham could be the guy is he stays healthy.

Also think Olson, White or Lynch could play an impact like Florida’s TE made last year. Lynch looked VERY GOOD in the Spring, and one of these TE’s might be the Fall surprise here with a move to WR.

My money is on Wooten to have a massive impact, perhaps outshing AJ Green.

I find it a bit inconsistent to try and name an “out of no-where” in advance of their breakout. Once they start getting talked about, they are no longer “out of no-where!” But, being a dawg fan and enjoying any opportunity to talk Georgia Football: Abry Jones is the man! He’s going to be a wrecking ball inside, taking up the center and both guards (from time to time) and causing all kinds of trouble. He’s poised for a breakout year and it’s going to be fun to watch!

Marlon Brown has been nicely forgotten, as have T King and Wooten and Troupe. All four could become very good SEC receivers imo. We have more depth there than most seem to realize. Unfortunately, we may only have one QB to throw it to them, if Gray leaves. A pulled muscle, and they all go to waste. I bet the staff knows what they have there. I will never forget the TD pass Barkley threw to Brown in the HS all star game–they looked two college players working out at the local HS.

I agree, UGA will absolutely go a National Championship and Heisman run, the likes of which no one has ever seen starting in 2010. This offense is the most loaded I’ve ever seen on any team in 25 years.

You also have the nation’s best punter, the nation’s best kicker, and the guy running the defense that Nick Saban tried to hire.

It’s going to be a slughter of the rest of the field for a long, long time. Richt’s going to amaze the college football world and do something no one has EVER done before—

Set a new consecutive win record.

This will make USC’s run look like JR. HIGH.

The 5 National Championships and 2 Heisman winners Richt has coached in bore him, that’s so last deacde, he needs a bigger challenge. Look out folks. It’s coming.

I see several players that could have a breakout season if they have a little luck, as in get enough playing time, and they avoid injury. I am not listing established players like Durham. 1. Wooten at WR, IF he hangs on to the ball. 2. Geathers, I predict that he will be a starter at the nose before the season is over. 3. Nick Williams, an aggressive 220 lb SS that loves the 3-4. 4. A J Harmon, if he stays healthy and has a shot with this O line. The guy has been working his tail of and took off about 40 lbs. 5. Ogletree is not exactly a sleeper but can contribute right away on special teams. Alec seems to have a knack for blocking kicks, something that has been missing at UGA.

Kim, the Catch-22 is, they to come out of nowhere and make an impact, you have to play. Picking guys down the charts or incoming freshmen, these are guys who make not get on the field much in 2010.

Vinny and Babs need to stay in seclusion or leave Athens. Sick of hearing about them wearing orange blah blah blah….. Vince was a decent coach- not a great one anyway….. We dont need any sympathizers for the toothless rednecks in orange up 75 around here.

People continue to overlook T. King at the WR position. Red shirted his freshmen year, and last year J. Cox hardly looked his way. If you were not AJ or Orson Charles, you did not get many looks. T. King was the Gatorade HS player of the year his senior year!! Plenty of speed and quickness unlike anyone else at the WR positon for UGA, including AJ. I predict a break out year,

I know all you puppies would love to see Herschel come out of no where because every sprig you ladies close your eyes an relive the glory that was uga football in 1980……but it’s 2010 so get ready for the reality of this season…7 wins maybe 8 is about all you girls will get this year, and ofcourse you’ll get crushed by the Mighty Gators by 4 maybe 5 td’s……mediocrity rules in Athens

ATTENTION MR BILL KING:

please stop getting your information from chris low. He is a 100% tennessee vol homer and georgia hater. He collects all of his article ideas from Mr.Vol.Com’s John pennington, the biggest vol homer (in a state of denial about it) in knoxville.
.
I will not be back to this blog if you continue to quote knoxville based chris low s opinion about this team. If tennessee beats georgia, thats all the concern he has for georgia. And if theres any bulldawg fans reading ESPN.COM/SEC/ – join me in complaining to espn that a knoxville based vol season ticket holder of 10 years is writing a “supposed” unbias sec blog.

everyone knows- a vol is never unbiased – they lean orange at every opportunity

I think the running backs will have a outstanding season if they can say healthy. The Secondary looks to do big things as well. I like Christian Robinson, Boykin, Rambo, Durham, As far as out of no where player, I would say Cuff, Jakar Hamilton. Wooten looks to have solid season that kid is a real speedster. Go Dawgs!!!!! 3+4+= 34

No doubt it will be Kris Durham. The guy has great hands, can take a hit and is the go to guy for a first down. Green will get the glory, but Durham will do a lot of the work. Write it down.

I don’t know what the debate between AJ Green and Julio Jones is about. AJ Green is a better receiver and the stats don’t lie. Proof is in the pudding.
Below are AJ Green’s stats.
Passing / Rushing
REC YDS AVG LNG TD / ATT YDS AVG LNG
2008 56 963 17.2 54 8 / 4 61 15.3 28
2009 53 808 15.2 65 6 / 0 0 0.0 0

Below are Julio Jone’s Stats
Passing / Rushing
REC YDS AVG LNG TD / ATT YDS AVG LNG
2008 58 924 15.9 64 4 / 0 0 0.0 0
2009 43 596 13.9 73 4 / 2 4 2.0 5

The only category AJ Green doesn’t beat Julio Jones in is Longest Catch. Again why is there a debate?

A new QB in the SEC EAST who has been waiting patiently for his chance for 3 years will finally get his start to come off the bench, and prove he’s more than a bench-sitter and his high school stats, were the real deal, and his QB stats in fill-in duties were outstanding and not a fluke.

We are talking about Joe Cox, same time last year.

Didi you think it was Florida’s QB John Bentley? GOTCHA! He does remind you alot of Joe Cox, the similarities are amazing.

Boling, Glenn, Jones are NFL prospects that should get drafted, if all our lineman stay healthy, and we have two guy’s step up and play to their potential, we could easily have five nfl lineman starting, and a couple of nfl back up guys rotating in, I look for AJ Harmon to explode on the scene at LT and put Boling back at his natural position, Sturdivant to stay healthy and contribute at LG this year getting himself ready for a big time senior season and leaving the only doubt in nfl scouts being can he stay healthy, Strickland – the strongest man on the team if healthy could be an absolute road grader adding depth at RG, and Davis and Davis are two dependable borderline NFL guys that will start if the other guy’s do not step up and stay healthy, or give us added depth and a deep OL –

My picks are Harmon and Strickland on the OL, and Geathers on Defense whom I think will start at NT sooner than later

it all comes down to staying healthy and this offense could be scary even with a young QB, There is no excuses for Bobo this year cause he should have defenses guessing every single play of every game with the talent at WR, TE, OL, RB, FB, well every position on the offense, it is as good as it has ever been as far as talent across the board

I could name several folks but with the defensive scheme several players we haven’t noticed before could make plays, develop confidence and become terrors. The use of tight ends as slot receivers will create a lot of mismatches against linebackers, so that could make for interesting developments.

And it Murray develops early he could be a big surprise, just like David Greene his redshirt freshman year.

I’d say Logan Gray could be the Dogs next big star. He is a tremendous athlete. I don’t think he’ll leave. He can make a big impact as a slash guy: little qb wildcat, little wr, little slot, little runs on zone reads. Or, if Murray gets injured again, Logan could come in on the white horse as QB, Tom Brady/Kurt Warner like, and lead the troops to the big dance.

Logan could win the job over the summer and be the starter, which I think will happen, looked sharp on g-day.

forgot to mention, think we will have our next great walk on, whom has now earned a scholarship for UGA, a lot of people will learn about Rueben Faloughi this year if they haven’t already, the 3-4 D is a blessing in disguise for this young man, and while he may not be a starter because of Houston and Washington, he will add some depth and be a big contributor when he plays
