Who’s likely to be the Dogs’ next star out of nowhere?

Will Kris Durham become an SEC star this season? (AJC staff)

Will Kris Durham become an SEC star this season? (AJC staff)

Asked in a mailbag column what SEC players he sees coming “out of nowhere to be star players this year,” ESPN.com’s Chris Low included Georgia wide receiver Kris Durham, returning from a year off due to injury, along with South Carolina safety DeVonte Holloman, Arkansas defensive end Jake Bequette, Tennessee running back Tauren Poole, Florida linebacker Jon Bostic, Kentucky linebacker Danny Trevathan and Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf.

Low’s opinion of Durham jibes with my own, which was reinforced by watching Durham make some really impressive catches in the recent G-Day game. With coverage focusing on A.J. Green, Georgia’s other wide receivers are likely to get some nice opportunities this season, and lanky No. 16 seems ready to rise to the occasion in his senior year.

But do you see any other Dogs making such a move out of the shadows into the spotlight? We’re not talking established stars like Green and Washaun Ealey here. Or heavily spotlighted players like Aaron Murray. And I don’t count Justin Houston in this category because he impressed enough people last season that just about everyone is expecting big things of him this year. Ditto Orson Charles.

Besides Durham, I think Vance Cuff in the secondary, one of the most impressive players of the spring, might make a big move this season. Anyone else on your “star” radar?

(By the way, in that same column Low also addresses the A.J. Green vs. Julio Jones debate, saying he would have given the nod to Jones as the better receiver in the two players’ freshman seasons and to Green last year. This season, likely to be the last year of college ball for both players, should decide a winner, he says. Feel free to chime in on that, too.)

It’s a shame AJ Green didn’t get a chance to play against tech and torch the wreck’s defense all night long like Ealey and CK4 did

All of you guys are wrong I’m afraid……… It’s the 6′ 5″ 340lb “man in the middle” KWAEME GEATHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our much talented and over-hyped offensive line could do absolutely nothing with this guy. The O line stunk up the field when Geathers was in the game.

Whatever happened to Israel Troupe? Just never lived up to the hype. Every year I find him buried in the middle of the depth chart. I think he may be injured right now…

Offensively, Dontavious Jackson, Kris Durham, and Orson Charles should all have plenty of opportunities.

Defensively, take your pick, lots of good athletes looking to grab some headlines….. Abry Jones, Justin Houston, DeAngelo Tyson, Vance Cuff, Cornelius Washington,….Christian Robinson also has a shot…. Branden Smith is excluded, he’s already proven his impact.

2011 Defensive Player out of nowhere… Reuben Faloughi or Mike Gilliard…. and if you allow it, due to the position change….. Richard Samuel.

Will, I could not agree more with Geathers. I think he slides into the starting lineup after the wreaking havoc against USC-east and Tyson slides out to end, opposite of Jones. However, I also believe Marlon Brown is going to step-up and be a star by mid-season (game 5 or 6, he’ll start to feel comfortable in the offense). Hope they all turn into superstars, GO DAWGS!

Will, one of my best sources for info say Geathers was re-engineered in the weight room last year while redshirting. Went from boy to man….

The only reason he is not on my list is, I think he’ll have limited opportunities in 2010. He should be on everyone’s list for 2011. Good call.

Dusty – Those are great players but as far as Parade Magazine goes it has lost all credibility choosing an All American team after this past year where they had two token QBs on the team, Hutson Mason and Dylan Farve…..yes Brett’s nephew.

ESPN 150 – Both not on it
Rivals 100 – Both not on it
Rivals 250 – Both not on it
Scout – Hutson Mason 54th ranked QB in the country, Dylan Farve Not rated……..Scout’s QB ranking went from 1-137

Cornelius Washington & Abry Jones step it up on D. Add several others to the “solid” list along with Orson Charles, Ealey, Cuff – such as Brandon Boykin, Cordy Glenn, Bacarri Rambo, DaAngelo Tyson, Caleb King & Nick Williams – all will be NFL draft picks. Players who may surprise: Geathers, Marlon Brown, Wooten, Lott – and don’t forget Ogletree. Dawgs are pretty solid at almost every position.

I think the question is which Georgia player will win the Heisman this year and next, like the USC years?

I’d say probably AJ Green will win the Heisman in 2010 and then Murray or Ealey will win the Heisman in 2011.

I think it will be the goast of Tim Teblow. Barnhart and the rest cant seem to let go. It wont be any current player- it will be Tim Teblows clone. Maybe when the show highlights of the past SEC games at the dome this year, they will include Timmy’s redention of “cryin a river because sometimes God loves Bama more than Fla…”

I agree, UGA will absolutely go a National Championship and Heisman run, the likes of which no one has ever seen starting in 2010. This offense is the most loaded I’ve ever seen on any team in 25 years.

You also have the nation’s best punter, the nation’s best kicker, and the guy running the defense that Nick Saban tried to hire.

It’s going to be a slughter of the rest of the field for a long, long time. Richt’s going to amaze the college football world and do something no one has EVER done before—

Set a new consecutive win record.

This will make USC’s run look like JR. HIGH.

The 5 National Championships and 2 Heisman winners Richt has coached in bore him, that’s so last deacde, he needs a bigger challenge. Look out folks. It’s coming.

DID you people read the article? STAR from OUT of Nowhere! AJ GREEN we know. All the players most of you SMART dawg fans names we all know. I will go with Hutson because nobody has really seen what he can do and he will be a True Freshman. Is there a good freshman running back coming in? One of them could make King the bust he really is.

Breakout performers…

On offense by seasons end, Cordy Glenn will be getting the NFL pub that he will have earned.

On defense by midseason, Dowtin will be the tackling machine to step up in the absence of Rennie Curran.

Go Dawgs! Sic em!

Ken Malcolme, he’s a running back… he’s got the size to block for the QB… does he have the smarts? Lot’s of guys can run in space. Can he break the first tackle? Oh, We need one of our fullbacks to step into a DOMINATOR type role like Brannon S. did his junior year… that would be nice.

I see several players that could have a breakout season if they have a little luck, as in get enough playing time, and they avoid injury. I am not listing established players like Durham. 1. Wooten at WR, IF he hangs on to the ball. 2. Geathers, I predict that he will be a starter at the nose before the season is over. 3. Nick Williams, an aggressive 220 lb SS that loves the 3-4. 4. A J Harmon, if he stays healthy and has a shot with this O line. The guy has been working his tail of and took off about 40 lbs. 5. Ogletree is not exactly a sleeper but can contribute right away on special teams. Alec seems to have a knack for blocking kicks, something that has been missing at UGA.

Kim, the Catch-22 is, they to come out of nowhere and make an impact, you have to play. Picking guys down the charts or incoming freshmen, these are guys who make not get on the field much in 2010.

We pretty much have to look at 2nd string guys that have a chance to play, and thru performance win a starting spot or significant playing time.

Not much talk about Brandon Smith. If he can hold on to the ball on those kick-off returns and run a little Wildcat formation while doing a good job on defense he would be a candidate. Of course, that might be asking a little much! :)
