Dogs a Top 25 team? Depends on who’s picking

Spring summaries of the college football landscape are popping up all over the place this week, and there’s been a good bit of head-scratching in the Bulldog Nation over Sports Illustrated snubbing the Dogs by not even including them in the also-considered category for its early Top 25.

On the other hand, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, who follows the UGA program a lot more closely than anyone at SI, has Georgia at No. 20 in his post-spring To 25.

Here’s what Schlabach has to say about Mark Richt’s team: “Georgia’s recipe for 2010: keep quarterback Aaron Murray healthy and play better defense. Georgia might go into the season without a proven backup quarterback if junior Logan Gray decides to transfer. Murray beat out Gray and freshman Zach Mettenberger for the starting job before Mettenberger was dismissed from the team after his arrest during spring break. Georgia figures to rely on its running game to take the pressure off Murray, and it needs to find a consistent receiver to complement A.J. Green. The defense will be more aggressive in new coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 scheme, but the Dawgs have to find more defensive linemen. Cornerback Vance Cuff was a pleasant surprise during spring practice, easing Grantham’s concerns about the secondary. With the SEC’s best punter and kicker coming back, Georgia could be a surprise depending on how quickly Murray gets comfortable at quarterback.”

A pretty fair assessment, I’d say.

Elsewhere, in a chat with readers, Schlabach offered this view of the coming season for the Dogs: “I think as long as they get something out of Murray, they could win nine or 10 games. Experienced OL. Best WR in the SEC. Two great TEs. Best kicker and punter in the league. Big ? mark is defense. Can they get pressure on the QB? Vance Cuff gives them optimism in the secondary.”

As for the nonsensical but persistent “hot seat” talk about Richt among bloggers and columnists, Schlabach says: “I don’t think Richt is going to be fired anytime soon.”

Meanwhile, Chris Low, who covers the SEC for ESPN.com, has posted his spring summary of the Dogs. On the offensive side, he mirrors the excitement a lot of Dogs fans have about a couple of the returning stars: “The idea of running back Washaun Ealey and receiver A.J. Green on the field together (and healthy) at the same time is an enticing one for Georgia fans, not to mention Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. When Ealey started to get it going last November, Green was struggling with injuries. And when Green was tearing it up at the beginning of the season, Ealey wasn’t playing. They should be dynamite together in 2010 and keep defenses from ganging up on one or the other.”

I like the sound of that.

Key questions facing the Dogs besides lack of depth at quarterback, Low notes, include who besides Justin Houston is likely to make some noise at outside linebacker, and how the retooled secondary does against the pass. Says Low: “Georgia lost most of its defensive backfield from a year ago, but that might not necessarily be a bad thing when you look at how poorly the Bulldogs defended the pass at times. Sophomore cornerback Branden Smith should be better the second time around, and the addition of junior college safety Jakar Hamilton was huge. He was one of the stars of the spring. Junior cornerback Brandon Boykin is adamant that the Bulldogs will be just fine in the secondary next season. One thing’s for sure: They can’t give up 25 touchdown passes again and expect to be better on defense.”

Speaking of which, there’s been considerable attention paid online to a quote from a Palm Beach Post story on former Georgia safety Reshad Jones, newly signed to the Miami Dolphins.

Explaining why he moved from free safety to strong safety his junior season at Georgia, Jones says: “We had an older guy on the team who was kind of struggling at the corner, but they wanted to keep him on the field, so they moved him to free safety and me to strong safety.”

That older guy who was struggling was, of course, Bryan Evans, who continued to struggle even after the switch. The obsession with keeping Evans on the field will remain one of the unfortunate legacies (and mysteries) of the Willie Martinez era.

On a different note, I’m surprised that Bill linked an article that has any disparaging remarks about UGA. (Even if it was by a former player)

Speculation is worthless. Georgia will be good or they won’t. Sitting at a computer and arguing about it will change nothing. It only serves to make one side look foolish when the toe finally does meet the leather. Go Dawgs.

Reptillicide is right on. From 2000 – 2008 the dawgs averaged about #12 on the final AP poll during those 9 yrs. Any poll leaving the dogs out of the top 25 pre-seaason for 2010 is just basing that on last year alone.

If we could establish a good running game first, the passing could develope into a real threat. We just need to seize the opportunities when the passing game is there. Hope our offensive line is right on. Might remind us of the days of Hershel, but more balanced with A.J. Green in the mix with the passing game.

I’m just glad that Bryan Evans will FINALLY be off the field for good now. Ealey, King, Green, and the OL give me hope for a decent offensive year. I think we’ll see lightyears of improvement from the secondary with new technique changes. The DL will struggle until we get the right personnel.

UGA is a bad call against LSU and even worse defense away from beating them, getting our head right and keeping a lead against Kentucky, and they beat the ACC champs. UGA beat everyone’s picks this year to challenge Alabama out west in Auburn and Arkansas. Georgia is not far away. This season they drop Ok. State and Arizona St. and pick up two automatic wins. Not to mention they drop LSU and pick up Miss. St. I would say UGA, who has excellent talent will surprise many this year. It is about match ups. Tennessee will be way down, South Carolina will challenge UGA, and Florida is a probable loss. A one or two loss campaign with 11 wins is not a stretch. I say UGA will lose a close call to So. Car. and get thumped by loaded Florida. Their best wins being Arkansas, who Richt owns and a grown up Georgia will beat Auburn and Tech. The third best SEC team means a trip back to Orlando for a matchup with I would say, Wisconsin or Penn State.

I’m beyond caring about preseason rankings, they just don’t matter… but you haters that don’t think UGA belongs in a preseason top need to look at where UGA has finished in the top 25 over the past 9 years. Plainly speaking, they finish in the top 25 more frequently than almost any other program.

In fact, most top 25 lists only include 3 SEC teams. Yeah, that ‘mighty’ SEC conference that you guys crow about all of the time has only 3.

The reality of the SEC is that there are only 2 decent teams: AL and FL. The rest are average at best. However, I’m sure that no SEC would ever admit to reality and prefer to continue wearing those rose-colored glasses.

Reptillicide –

These rankings go in the CURRENT world reality.

The pre-season #1 pick in the polls in 2008, UGA spit the bit, losing 3 times. Last year they had 5 losses. That’s 8 in 2 years. UGA has a new QB, a new DC and has to replace 6 starters on D.

You need to be in the present, not the past 9 yrs before the last 2 because the polls aren’t. You sound like the UGA fans who try to make UGA a better current program than UF by going back to past eras while ignoring the fact that UGA’s recent record against UF is 3-17.

Have a good record this year, then talk because the Dogs will have then earned it.

I don’t see where some people are saying there is a lack of depth at reciever. UGA is for the vast majority of the time is gonna be in a pro set or pro I package with only two recievers on the field while occassionally dropping a TE or FB and going with a three reciever set. They currently have ’six’ guys to fill those ‘two’ or ‘three’ positions. Also taking in consideration that Orson Charles will split out wide on occassion, there is plenty of depth there.

With a much better QB than last year, who ever it will end up being, an effort needs to try and , if nothing else, get the ball to the other teams 35 to 40 yard line so at least Blair Walsh can do his thing. I don’t think enough thinking , by BOBO , went into play calling to make sure you at least gave Walsh a shot at a field goal. Too many “hail Mary’s” to Green that didn’t work and UGA ended up 4th down and kicked. UGA could lose or win 3 or 4 games this year by a field goal made or missed. Auburn, Tennessee , Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Arkansas. all could be that close. UGA in the past , has won a lot of close games by setting up their field goal kicker the whole game. If they make a touchdown then great but at least they get a field goal try out of it. This was a big negative last year for BOBO..

The dawgs play an easy schedule that should allow then to have a top25 ranking based on their record. The fact that the dawgs don’t play any real Bad A$$es this year should hurt them. Arkansas, Vols, and Tech are at home. Auburn is away but shouldn’t be too tuff. The dawgs couldn’t beat the gators even if the Gators didn’t show-up. A 6-6 La-Laf, 3-9 Colorado, 1-10 Idaho St., and 11-3 Tech real hard OCC for sure. The teams that are not TECH didn’t win as many games together as Tech won. And all dawgs will tell you they OWN Tech so that isn’t a hard game.

Tormentor, of course he looked better in last year’s G-Day game, last year he was going against a WM coached defense. I would take this as a good sign for the overall team’s success b/c the offense will be getting quality reps in practice against an agressive D that will better prepare them for the SEC schedule.

I think Murray is a great QB in High School and in 1-AA in college he would be great but in 1-A ,SEC I too worry about his size . At barely 6 FT Murray can’t be a pocket passer. He better be able to pick out receiver’s on the run and hit his mark. You need a lot of targets to throw to and they need to think that after running their route if Murray hasn’t run the ball yet they , the receiver’s , need to adjust and come back toward Murray hoping he can find them. This is going to be a big adjustment from what they are use to doing. BOBO better have everyone ready for a lot different look on offense .Unless, Ealey and King can gain 100 yards per game each.

I’m a Tech fan but Schlabauch is pretty objective. In this case, I think he’s right about UGA’s ranking. I think the defense is probably a mystery but it won’t have to be good to start the season. UL-L will be an easy win and USC’s offense couldn’t score on Paris Hilton with Garcia running it.

As long as UGA doesn’t turn it over with the alarming frequency they did last year and they can do something about the penalties, they’ll probably win around 9 or 10 games, but likely not go to Atlanta.

NOBODY knows ANYTHING about this team. My guess is that Murray probably would have played last year had it not been for his shoulder injury early on. A couple of pump fakes last year and we win two more games. The offense WILL be better… that’s a fact. The defense will create more turnovers if nothing else, thus allowing less scoring and increased possession time for the offense… AND better FIELD POSITION. Oh, Coach Belin has already been quoted saying that the best players will play on special teams… and BUTLER and WALSH will show off too. 10 wins is not a stretch. It’s the early games that worry me the most. LSU fan… you almost got beat by us last year… and we were stinking it up… and the year before that we wiped your face in the turf in Baton Rouge. For sure not a top 25 team at the start. I think they may be able to surprise some people, but I look for them to finish 3rd in the East. The only problem is that the East isn’t really that competitive anymore. The SEC will be held up by the West for the next two or three years, at least.

The best UGA can hope for is a fast start and someone in the east upsets Florida. I do agree they should have a pre-season rank given the past 9 years. The only issue they’ve had is getting over that Florida hump and I hope they finally do. The timing is perfect right now with Florida having a new QB and Tennessee stinking it up the next couple of years. It’s been a REALLY long time since UGA beat both in the same year.

Murray was the #3 rated QB in the country coming out of HS, and Meyer was highly disappointed he didn’t commit to the Gators. He will be fine once he gets comfortable in there.

The D, after some early mistakes will settle in to this new scheme and be very strong in the second half of the season.

Top 25 lets see

hmmmmm

under Richt

He is 24-7 against the SEC West.

He is 28-16 against the SEC East.

He is 38-4 against nonconference opponents.

He is 8-1 against Georgia Tech.

He won four of his first five games against Tennessee, but has lost three of the last four against the Vols since then.

He was born the same year as Chuck D of Public Enemy.

Ranks third in winning percentage among active college coaches that have coached for at least five years, now that Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

He is 90-27, trailing only Urban Meyer (96-18) and Bob Stoops (117-29).\\yeah he is pretty damn good

Mark Richt is one of only six coaches to win two SEC football championships in their first five years coaching. He is also one of only five head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons

Coach Richt’s Red and Black outfits have never posted a losing record in conference play and six of his last eight squads have finished 6-2 or better in regular-season SEC contests.

Mark Richt’s overall success in Southeastern Conference action—including two SEC titles, three conference championship game appearances, and four finishes of no worse than tied for first place in the East, with no losing records in the process—is without parallel in Georgia football history.

Ere anyone attempts to argue that Coach Richt’s superb out-of-conference ledger is the product of schedules stacked with the likes of

Northwestern State,

Western Kentucky,

Tennessee Tech, and

Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl,

I should hasten to point out that he is 21-4 against

Arizona State,

Boise State,

Boston College,

Clemson,

Colorado,

Florida State,

Georgia Tech,

Michigan State,

Oklahoma State,

Purdue,

Texas A&M,

Virginia Tech,

West Virginia, and

Wisconsin.

Even if we factor out Division I-AA teams, Sun Belt squads, and similar schedule fodder, Coach Richt is .840 against teams from automatic BCS-qualifying conferences other than the SEC. (Yes, I’m going ahead and counting the Broncos in that category because the Mountain West will get a guaranteed bid as soon as Boise State is invited to join.)

There are those in Bulldog Nation who would like to see Mark Richt run out of town on a rail. Such people should be turned over to the custody of Mike Leach, in the hope that he will treat their obvious head trauma the way he treated Adam James’s

Preach it Statrick!! Keep those “stats”. They’re only going to continue to get worse as each year passes. Dawgs have definetly bakcslid the last 2 years and I don’t see any major imrpovements for this year. Too many holes to fill on the D and implement a new scheme at the same time. The O has tons of talent but huge question mark at QB. Lastly, Richt still has to prove that he can correct the penalties and tunovers. That was upposed to happen (again) last year and we all know how that turned out. I do think UGA is headed back in the right direction, but honestly beilve it’s still about 2-3 years away.

Do me a favor and take those useless stats and shove them up your ???

Until Richt can beat the FL’s of the world frankly I could care less about those 10 win seasons

They dont mean crap and no one but UGA fans know that about him.

That out-of-conference list you posted is nothing to brag about, only 3 of those teams have been in the top 10 in the last decade and that has only been one time for them all.

Until Richt can earn his 3 million by beating FL on a consistent basis I could care less. Maybe if he does that, I will feel that I’m getting the value out of the $1700 a yr I spend on season tickets.

I like Richt as a person but I have lost respect for him as a coach for allowing Captain Nemo Martinez to stroll the sidelines for so long and:

To also have UGA rank 4th since 1999, to have the most NFL players out of the NCAA and yet cannot beat FL who ranks 9th in that category and has to hope FL loses out to have a shot at playing in the SEC championship game.

Now take that stat and soak on it!!!!!!!

I realize unlike most UGA fans to take a step back and not let love for the team cloud better judgment.

Richt is a great guy but I have come to realize that Richt doesnt put the best players on the field nor does he prepare for the future as he should.

Ex Moreno sitting out his freshmen yr and he almost did it with Ely last year. He did do it with Marlon Brown. That guy will play on Sunday’s but the way its going he won’t on Saturdays.

Reshad Jones is turning heads for the Miami Dolphins. There are many other instances as well

We should have taken Cox out and let Gray, Murray and Mett play last yr. but no we don’t do that now we start all over again

I predict unless Murray just has a 180 we will barely lose to SC, then Arkansas, FL, and possibly Auburn

yeah, whatever…I was only looking at the official NCAA list of National Champs. I didn’t look all the way to the footnotes and asteriks and stuff but when I did seems like alot of polls in those were not really that officially recognized. I had never heard of most of them following football almost 50 years. I also went to the official UGA site and they say 1942 and 1980 so I’m gonna go by that . But dang, how about Georgia Tech!! The college football historian

9:20 pm

If you go by the idea that any poll declaring someone a national champion then Georgia does indeed have 5 ncs and Tech also 5. Alabama would actually have 16, Tennessee something like 8, Auburn around 5.

If you go by consensus polls meaning the majority of the polls picked your team as national champion then I think Bama has something like 8-9, Georgia 2 (1980 and 1942), UT 2 I think, AU one, LSU 3, Florida 3, The consensus would be a more meaningful way of looking at things since the majority of folks think you were the best and it cuts down on the number of all these different national titles people claim.

Overall, I think the generally accepted number as far as true legitimate national championships among teams is Bama and ND tied at 8, OU at 7, USC may have 6 or 7. All the other big traditional names like Nebraska have 5 or less. Surprisingly some huge names like Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Penn state only have like 2 or 3 each.

Delbert D.

May 5th, 2010
9:58 pm

patrick – I’m back. I was reading the 2009 NCAA Records PDF. Page 77 is confusing to me, since it lists several organizations under the heading “Consensus National Champions – Since 1950.” It is obvious from the annual results that there was not universal agreement, and a grouping of similar conclusions does not fit the definition of concensus. I wonder why the NCAA chose that word.

patrick

May 5th, 2010
10:11 pm

They choose many words carefully. Notice they don’t call any team ‘national champion’ but rather ‘national POLL champion’ or BSC champion. They do call every other NCAA sports champ a ‘national champion’. I wonder why.

patrick

May 5th, 2010
10:13 pm

Could it be a playoff sanctioned by them determines a true champ and opinions don’t?

patrick

May 5th, 2010
10:15 pm

Why the need for the word ‘consensus’ anyway? Oh because its a consensus of OPINIONS

Delbert D.

May 5th, 2010
10:28 pm

patrick – Apparently so. In pages 73 to 81, all selectors are listed for each year. 1980 shows 5 “National Poll Champions”, and 1981 shows 6. The list of selectors ” Since 1950″ on page 85 of the publication (p. 77 of the PDF) appears to me that a consensus was reached by the NCAA members, board, secretaries or whoever that the listed organizations would result in a simplified list. Almost certainly is is not a consensus of the organizations – their are several disagreements, the most recent being 2003. Consensus implies collaboration in reaching general or group agreement, stating it simply (indeed, oversimplified).

I wonder why The Sporting News and The NY Times are not in that list.

Delbert D.

May 5th, 2010

Yes, certainly opinions. Sagarin’s method applies only results compared against numerical-based strength of schedule calculations. I think that exhibits (grossly) the current scientific thinking that artificial intelligence systems will not be able to duplicate human neural functioning.

15 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
2009 Record: 11-3
Returning Starters: 15 (seven offense, eight defense)

Key returnees: QB Josh Nesbitt, C Sean Bedford, RB Roddy Jones, LB Brad Jefferson.

Spring star: RB Anthony Allen.

Spring recap: Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has never had trouble replacing a B-back (fullback), so don’t expect a ton of dropoff from Jonathan Dwyer to Allen. Nesbitt remains at the helm, and Tevin Washington proved this spring that the offense is in capable hands if Nesbitt gets hurt. On defense, the Yellow Jackets have switched to a 3-4 under new coordinator Al Groh. One player who should return to the first-team defense is safety Cooper Taylor, who missed 11 games last year after he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition, which has since been treated

Link Report this comment

this is a bunck of BS…tevin washington didnt prove anything other than GA tech defense is in pretty bad shape…big difference in a spring game and an actual regular season game. tech will have big time trouble if nesbitt goes down because that will put a qb that should be playing running back ona div 1aa team calling plays and trying to go against div 1a defensive players. and as far as techs defense goes they have lost there best players the last two years from the D-line and it doesnt matter what defense they switch too they will still have less talent on field. big drop off there. Allen wont do jack from b-back positon as it takes him about 5 or so yards just to build up his speed. he runs better from deeper back in the backfield where he can use his speed. tech will be out of the top 25 6 games or less into the season. UGA on the other will be ranked top 15 or better by 6 games in with nio losses. UGA is better than any team they face until they get to that FLA game, as far as talent goes, and this year will have an expierenced off line to run the ball down fla throat. as far a murry goes he will be just fine as was david green was when played as a red shirt freshman. murry has the same expierence around him that david greene had and is better at eluding the rush than david which will put more pressure on the defense which in turn will have corner backs cheating up as UGA receiver run by them, and Murry can throw on the run as good or better than any qb in college football. very accurate on the run. at 6ft 1 and being mobile plus having a strong arm and having a whole year to learn Coach Bobo system, Murry is more than ready to lead UGA to an SEC title…i can see the bulldogs losing 2 but no more than that with the combo of very good talent and upperclassmen on the O-line, which they havent had since Greene i might add. can easily fininsh top 10 or better with a bowl victory.

people who say murry is too small is reaching a bit..its college not pros where it is harder to play at 6 ft or so. but the college level has plenty of 6 ft or so qbs that win at a high clip…flutie and even DJ shockley was 6ft. look what cox did last year as a UGA qb..he was number 3 in the SEC. threw for 25 tds and close to 2600 yards and he is a bit shorter than Murry. so you guys will have to find some other excuse for UGA to be a top 25 team this year.

just look at the schedules…tech could be 2-4 or 3-3 after the first 6 games with wins aginst south carolina st and Kansas and losses against North Carolina , north carolina st ,wake forest and virgina where they have just as much talent or more at every position than you guys do and with only 1 good player on your high school offense back there and a very weak defense, tech is in deep trouble…the Next 6 games are even harder. tech could finish up the year going 2-4 or 1-5 if duke sneaks a win from you wich they easily could. so that would make your final record 4-8 or 5-7 at best. the reason for the big drop off is that gailys NFL players are gone and thus your team is left with nesbit and about 20 or so div 1aa players to run that high school offense up against some off the better div 1a defenses in the acc…look foward to reading you techies post of how bad you guys need another coach asap about half way into the season..

UGA finished in the top 10 6 out of 9 years, and top 25, 8 out of 9, and some guy from SI doesn’t think UGA will finish top 25?

Staples from SI picked Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and USC last year, so consider the source. Also missed on Florida (had them #1), and Bama (had them #10).

Staples is the worst picker of top 25 finishers, except for Chris Low who missed out on the order of 11 out 12 SEC teams last year. I’m sure both guys are good writers, but should’nt be taken seriously as pickers for sure. Notre Dame? Notre Dame?

UGA will finish #1 in the nation in 2010 and go 14-0, Ricth has a great record against every team he plays except Fla. Against Bama and Auburn, if he gets to SEC Champ? 7-1 over last 8.

Should UGA be in the Top 25? Of course, in several categories:

1. Party school with few academic pretensions.

2. Most arrests of so called “student-athletes.”

3. Most inept coaches in the US.

4. Highest percentage of fans who never entered a college classroom.

5. Most illiterate alumni.

And on and on… You get the picture.
