On Mettenberger and way-out bowl predictions

Zach Mettenberger hopes for a second chance somewhere other than UGA. (wsbtv.com)

Zach Mettenberger hopes for a second chance somewhere other than UGA. (wsbtv.com)

Well, one thing we know for sure about Zach Mettenberger: He won’t be transferring to Valdosta State, as some had speculated, since he’s banished from the town that calls itself Winnersville.

Monday’s news that the former UGA quarterback had pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery stemming from the spring break bar incident in the Valdosta area frankly came as no big surprise. As I said on the day news of Mettenberger being kicked off the Bulldogs first broke, the fact that Mark Richt had taken such drastic action pointed to more than just underage drinking. And, for once, the most prevalent rumor on the grapevine — which I first heard literally minutes after the news of Mett’s dismissal — pretty much was on the money.

A couple of other thoughts on the Mettenberger situation: He indicated in his statement taking “responsibility” for his actions that he hopes to get “a second chance to compete at another university.” That should put an end to the hopes some fans had that he could return to UGA. But despite being tainted by a transgression of a sexual nature and a very public demonstration of poor judgment, that NFL-caliber arm he has and his showing in Georgia’s spring game probably will mean Mettenberger’s wish will come true. There’s talk (how credible, I don’t know) that Tommy Tuberville is interested in bringing Mettenberger to Texas Tech.

And it’s been gratifying to see that most UGA fans speaking out on the subject accept that Richt kicking Mettenberger off the team was absolutely the right thing to do. I have, however, seen a couple of postings here and there from folks who don’t think there was anything wrong with Mettenberger grabbing a young woman’s breasts and buttocks against her will and who believe it’s ridiculous that he was punished for what they seem to think should be categorized as just being a guy.

Obviously these yahoos don’t have daughters.

RIDICULOUSLY EARLY BOWL PREDICTIONS
Moving on, CollegeFootballNews.com calls its bowl picks for the coming season “ridiculously early,” but really it’s only taking things one more step than all the prognosticators who already are picking Florida in the SEC East and Alabama to repeat as SEC champ. Besides, as CFN says, “it’s always goofy fun to look at the possibilities.”

Notable for UGA fans is that CFN sees the Dogs beating Florida this season and winding up playing Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 3 as one of the BCS at-large picks,  with the “Florida/Georgia loser” facing Penn State in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. Says CFN of the Dogs: “Georgia has the right schedule and the returning talent to slip through to win the East over a rebuilding Florida. The Orange would snap up the Dawgs getting the first pick of at-large teams (after the Rose).”

CFN sees Alabama as an SEC champion carrying a couple of losses and winding up in the Sugar Bowl against Nebraska, though it notes “this could very, very easily be Florida, Georgia or LSU if Alabama winds up playing for the national title”— which they think would happen only if Bama has just one loss. If, as they expect, the Tide has two losses, CFN predicts Ohio State and TCU meeting in the BCS Championship game.

So … Dogs fans should root for Bama?

It seems that 99% of the problems at Georgia involve drinking. Find a way to clamp down on that and many of those problems may disappear. I don’t care how normal some folks think it is for college kids to consume/over-consume alcohol, in the final analysis many just can’t handle it and makes asses of themselves. I’m sure Mett would agree, if he had the opportunity to make his decision over again, that drinking was not worth flushing his career at Georgia down the toilet. Getting kicked off the team is a tough pill to swallow but hey, he ordered the medicine. What kills me is that, to my know knowledge (or lack thereof), there doesn’t seem to be any “lessons learned” teaching to the team regarding appropriate behavior because athletes continue to get into trouble each year between the bowl game and the first game of the following season. It’s really become more than a little annoying and begs the question “Are you coming to Athens to get drunk and make an ass out yourself or are you coming to play ball and compete for championships?” I know it ain’t everyone. And neither is it even a majority. But too many, in my opinion, are coming for the wrong reasons. I understand that no coach has a crystal ball but we need to try harder (yeah I know it may not be possible) to identify those athletes before offering them an opportunity to wear the red and black.

Suzie, you can’t be serious. You have no idea who the young lady was, let alone how she was dressed. Bee-ouch? First of all, it’s byotch, and secondly, going to a bar doesn’t automatically qualify you as one. If you are a female as your name implies, I’m wondering where the mysogeny comes from. Daddy issues, maybe.
Mett screwed up, was rightfully booted, end of story. Dogs lose 3 whether with or without him. See y’all in Tampa.

Suzie & Ben

What he did was absolutely wrong. It doesn’t matter that it happened at a bar or if it happens a 1000 times, wrong is wrong.

Anyone who can even remotely blow off his actions or try to say it was the woman’s fault really needs to check their moral compass because it’s way off.

Hopefully Mett has truly learned his lesson, but please let’s not trivalize what he did.

Go Dawgs!

I am all for guys getting second chances but the NCAA should step in when a kid gets kicked off one bowl division school and then gets courted by another. At a minimum he should not be allowed to play at a bowl division school. If one coach feels the transgressions rise to the level of expulsion, the other schools should accept this as well. Let him go to a junior college or some small school. Letting him play at a Texas Tech or any other school makes a mockery of the NCAA.

Straight from Valdosta here..The Blazers have enough quarterbacks. Although the talent of Mettenberger would be a good thing and four years of his talent would be amazing for the Blazers, VSU does not need star athletes that are going to make the headlines for the wrong reasons. Already this season our starting quarterback (whose no longer at VSU), transferred to VSU from Indiana University (Kellen Lewis), was arrested for battery on his girlfriend, our two star basketball players were given the boot for weed just before our elite 8 matchup and now our all-american baseball player was suspended for not going to class.

Sorry Mett, we dont need bad headlines in the Spectator Newspaper (vsuspectator.com) or the VDT.

And Winnersville is also Titletown USA!

Go Blazers!

Gary, good point there. I would agree with that especially with the guilty plea involved.

If Mett can get out to Texas Tech he would fit in with Tubberville’s “grab and go” offense.

Richt was right to dismiss him, but it’s hard to say how serious the offense was based on what’s been released. My guess though is that he wouldn’t have pleaded guilty for a simple pat on the butt.

Nick Saban went 6-5, 6-6, 6-6, 7-5 at Mich St.

He went 8-5 at LSU 2x

He went 7-6 at Alabama.

Saban has gone 5-3 or worse in conference 8 times.

Richt has only gone 5-3 or worse in conference 3 times in his first 9 years.

Compare that to Saban’s record and consistency in his 1st 9 years.

Richt has NEVER had a 7-6 or 6-6 season, Saban’s done it 5 times, including once at Alabama.

IT WAS A SETUP! WAKE UP! Mettenberger has no recall of events in Valdosta. He was slipped a Mickey Finn by the evil legion of Gator and Seminole fans. Those cretins lured the poor boy to that godforsaken hellhole in a diabolical scheme to destroy Richt and the Dawgs. The jerks from Valdosta are not content with merely ruining Mettenberg’s career–Now they want to steal Logan Gray.

Glad the whole story came out. CMR is definitely justified in releasing ZM. I’m sure ZM is reeling from the magnitude of the consequences he’s facing, and the realization that a few moments of drunken idiocy will now follow him for the rest of his life. At least someone’s not dead, as often happens in these circumstances. Hopefully, the rest of the team is going to start to get the message.

I just don’t get it. Who walks into a bar (or anywhere else, for that matter), sees a drunken, slurring, staggering fool, and thinks “I want to be like that.” Wake up, kids, you’re not missing anything that you won’t regret.

Right, ZM?

The SEC champ should ALWAYS play for the MNC! EVERY single time we play for it, we win it. The only years in recent history that the SEC champ didn’t win the MNC, we didn’t get to play for it. The BCS sucks!!!

Don’t make any excuses for this type behavior. It’s (the lame excuses) almost as bad as the horrible action itself. Mett almost got through this with a handslap and possibly could have if someone close to the incident had not come forward and done the right thing. Then he gets lawyered up and gets the more serious of the charges dismissed and comes out smelling like a rose with a couple of misdemeanors and a little probation. Also, under the first offender plea he entered, the charges will not remain on his record. He will not have to register as a sex offender either. As bad as all this is in a career ruining way, believe me- it could have been worse. Lesson of the day: Working at the sawmill beats prison time any day! That’s Mett Life…….

Hoop Dawg, I agree Mett needed to go. Any place you went in Buckhead or Midtown in the late 90s, early 2000’s always had some a-hole who would play grab grab. I am not saying it is ok, but I just think we aren’t getting the whole story of what happened.

Indeed, TCU v. Ohio State would be a depressing matchup.

Will someone do a little research and see if there isn’t a Div I-AA school that has a tougher schedule than Ohio State? It’s amazing what a powderpuff schedule those guys seem to string together. I mean, maybe in 1948 those teams were formidable, but now???

I think Mett going to play for TT at TAM is a good fit. I would not doubt but Richt helped make that happen. Now… time to move past this. The summer practice gets underway in a few months, and we have bigger things to worry about. Long-term, the Dawgs wiill be ok. I don’t think Murray will be any worse than Cox was, and we will have a better OL and backfield, and our defense HAS to be better. With a good schedule, this could be a good (not great) year. If the prediction of the BCS is right, and we beat Florida, then I am going to be a very happy Dawg this Fall. Here’s hoping it happens!

Preston – Agreed. The SEC should have a default invite to the BCS championship until such time as we actually lose one. It’s laughable that the above website says TCU will play for the national title. If that’s not an argument for a playoff I don’t know what is.

Yes we should have a good shot at the BCS. The UGA/UF winner has a very good chance of being the SEC champ or an at-large invite to the BCS.

The Tech game is likely to be even easier this year. They lost most of their talent to the draft. We have the same dominant line and running game and they are more experienced this time. Can’t see that game as a big challenge this year.

Mettenberger will probably do very well on the field at a Texas Tech or Louisville type school. With his arm that’s an ideal situation for him.
