LeMay’s a big catch, but UGA shouldn’t declare QB recruiting over

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

A few random thoughts on Christian LeMay, one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects, declaring he plans on attending UGA:

Mark Richt’s oft-noted professions of faith certainly didn’t hurt with this preacher’s son and were, in fact, mentioned by LeMay as one of the reasons he wants to go to school in Athens. But just as important (and perhaps more important) was the fact that Richt runs a pro-style offense at Georgia. LeMay has played in the spread in high school but recognizes that’s not the best offense for a QB who wants to play in the NFL. …

LeMay also is a big fan of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, which might give a moment’s pause to those UGA fans who are constantly calling for Bobo to be replaced. As our Chip Towers reported, LeMay said on Friday, “Georgia is the school I plan to enroll in unless something drastic happens. Unless Coach Richt or Coach Bobo is gone or something crazy like that, I’m a Georgia Bulldog.” After the nearly complete turnover of Georgia’s defensive staff this year, stability in the coaching ranks in Athens is something we should be hoping for. …

What does LeMay’s announcement mean for Georgia’s chances with the state’s top QB prospect, dual-threat Nick Marshall of Wilcox County? Hard to tell. Marc Weiszer of The Athens Banner-Herald reported Richt said this week that “right now our plan is to sign one quarterback,” but that could change if Logan Gray goes elsewhere. And, of course, it could change even if he doesn’t. This past recruiting season, Richt said he wasn’t going to sign a QB, and then had a last-minute change of heart and went for Hutson Mason. From UGA’s point of view, if the current situation proves anything, it’s that you can never have too many scholarship quarterbacks.

As for what Marshall might be thinking, Florida State fans no doubt are feeling better about the Seminoles’ chances with him, but as a co-worker remarked on Friday, the key to UGA’s chances with Marshall could ride on Mark Fox’s shoulders, since Marshall wants to play both basketball and football in college and has been offered for both sports by the Dogs. …

Speaking of FSU fans, it’s not surprising that they like to take shots at Richt, their former offensive coordinator, whenever possible. The Tomahawk Nation blog puts an interesting spin on the latest UGA recruiting news by saying that since landing LeMay affords Richt greater job security, it’s a good thing for the Seminoles, because going up against Richt in recruiting FSU “routinely beats UGA” for players in South Georgia.

The way this Noles fan sees it, if Richt loses his job, Alabama defensive chief Kirby Smart “is considered the heir apparent to the UGA job,” and Smart is “beloved in South Georgia, where he played high school ball in Bainbridge” and “is a better recruiter than Richt.” The blogger adds that “it’s easy to see why FSU fans want Richt to stay at UGA for as long as possible.”

I’m certainly not agreeing with this Noles-centric viewpoint; I just thought it worth noting.

Georgia will go 14-0 this year and next. They will not lose. They will set a record for consecutive wins after that. The run begins now. It’s on.

The real story behind the Zach Mettenberger fiasco just came out- sexual assault. Chalk up another good headline for the Dawgs. CMR- leader of men.

Does CMR talk about how many of his players went to the NFL from UGA or how many of them went to jail during his in home visits with recruits?

@ Mark You’re mistaken. Even though Jimbo was the coach in waithing last year, 4 other coached held titles higher than him. He had no say so except his offense, which was ranked #9 in the country last year… http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaaoff

Told you so….there were sexual battery charges pending agianst Mettenberger. Richt would not have dismissed him had it not been for the charges and repeated denials to his face by Mett. Thanks for nothing, Mettenberger….you disgraced yourself, your family, and UGA. Whiel we can overlook certain acts of youthful indescretion, you knew better. You had it all and blew it on a drunken groping & arguing with the po-po. If I had a free college education, I wouldn’t have screwed that up for all the booze & women in the world. Good riddance, you punk.

We called it! Criminal charges against Mett. Don’t give me that “boys will be boys” crap. He got what he deserved. And so did Mark Richt. For a man of such fine character, he can’t seem to impart that on his players. This lack of discipline on and off the field will be Richt’s undoing. Sorry, but that’s fact.

Landing LaMay is certainly a step in the right direciton, but it’s kind of like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. the Mark Richt era is over…..this season is the beginning of the end. He has lost total control (if he ever had it) over these kids.

Why are comments closed on the Mettenberger blog? The’ve never been closed anytime Montez Robinson, Odell Thurman or any other player was arrested. What BS! That’s why I don’t buy this paper anymore. And people have the nerve to call it a LIBERAL paper. PLEASE!

St. Richt,

Go grab some class, because it is very apparent you have zero. Did you get mad when the bomb didn’t go off in Times Sq.? You just thrive on negativity? Such a wonderful attribute to have in life.

Remeber this QB

This QB soon could wind up in the conversation when scouts talk about college football’s best quarterbacks. He embodies the “it” factor, and is an ideal blend of gunslinger and athlete. His athleticism should allow him to fit into any scheme, which probably stands out above anything else. He resembles Kyle Parker (class of 2008), but with better size and a bigger arm–a scary notion. Stephen Garcia (class of 2007) is another good comparison, and this QB probably is better. He has a strong arm and the ability to drive the ball downfield. Has the best, quickest release of any passer in his class, bar none. He puts excellent velocity on his deep out routes and can fit throws into tight spots. Has a quick snap release. Can throw on the run effectively and throw across his body. Has very good athletic ability and can make something happen when a play breaks down. Has quick feet and good agility. Buys himself second chances in the pocket. Has above-average speed and can be a threat to run. Seems to be at his best when rolling out of the pocket. Has a knack for improvising. He’s a tough, gritty winner with excellent intangibles. Finds a way to get things done and plays with infectious confidence. His physical tools are very good, but his methods can be raw and inconsistent. Has some Brett Favre to his game, which isn’t all good. This QB must harness his tools and become more polished. But his tools, size, mentality and aptitude to handle whatever is thrown at him give him exceptional upside–and will make him a very hot commodity.

West Rome, it’s worth pointing out that the score of a game or the record of a team is just a “stat” too. So, I assume the intention of that quote was to point out that the term loser is a bit deeper than looking at the numbers only.

St. Richt, if you weren’t so dumb you’d actually be funny!

“CMR – leader of men” is right. He insisted that ZM stand up and take responsibility for his actions, which is eventually what happened, AFTER he was kicked off the team. Great call by CMR.

Dawg-haters, the next time you quote a stat about player arrests, please include comparable data from other schools.

Here is a hint…. YOU CAN’T GET IT from other schools. They handle it internally while (since 2005) UGA has turned over offenders to Clarke County for processing.

Before you respond, call your favorite school, start with the Dean of Students. Ask for their policy in such matters.

FSU fans have short memories. What happened the last time we played FSU ? We embarrassed them in the Sugar Bowl, and if coach Richt hadn’t called of the Dawgs it would have really been embarrassing for them.

Ah, let the hype begin! LeMay will inherit the moniker “The Greatest Quarterback in the History of Football” (TM) once bestowed on other overrated UGA quarterbacks like Matt Stafford, Quitsey Carter, and Eric Zeier.

And we care about what FSU fans think because … ? Bill, hold off publishing any FSU clippings until the Seminoles become relevant again. All those South Georgia recruits they’re “stealing” can’t even help them win the ACC.
