LeMay’s a big catch, but UGA shouldn’t declare QB recruiting over

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

A few random thoughts on Christian LeMay, one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects, declaring he plans on attending UGA:

Mark Richt’s oft-noted professions of faith certainly didn’t hurt with this preacher’s son and were, in fact, mentioned by LeMay as one of the reasons he wants to go to school in Athens. But just as important (and perhaps more important) was the fact that Richt runs a pro-style offense at Georgia. LeMay has played in the spread in high school but recognizes that’s not the best offense for a QB who wants to play in the NFL. …

LeMay also is a big fan of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, which might give a moment’s pause to those UGA fans who are constantly calling for Bobo to be replaced. As our Chip Towers reported, LeMay said on Friday, “Georgia is the school I plan to enroll in unless something drastic happens. Unless Coach Richt or Coach Bobo is gone or something crazy like that, I’m a Georgia Bulldog.” After the nearly complete turnover of Georgia’s defensive staff this year, stability in the coaching ranks in Athens is something we should be hoping for. …

What does LeMay’s announcement mean for Georgia’s chances with the state’s top QB prospect, dual-threat Nick Marshall of Wilcox County? Hard to tell. Marc Weiszer of The Athens Banner-Herald reported Richt said this week that “right now our plan is to sign one quarterback,” but that could change if Logan Gray goes elsewhere. And, of course, it could change even if he doesn’t. This past recruiting season, Richt said he wasn’t going to sign a QB, and then had a last-minute change of heart and went for Hutson Mason. From UGA’s point of view, if the current situation proves anything, it’s that you can never have too many scholarship quarterbacks.

As for what Marshall might be thinking, Florida State fans no doubt are feeling better about the Seminoles’ chances with him, but as a co-worker remarked on Friday, the key to UGA’s chances with Marshall could ride on Mark Fox’s shoulders, since Marshall wants to play both basketball and football in college and has been offered for both sports by the Dogs. …

A NOLES VIEW ON RICHT

Speaking of FSU fans, it’s not surprising that they like to take shots at Richt, their former offensive coordinator, whenever possible. The Tomahawk Nation blog puts an interesting spin on the latest UGA recruiting news by saying that since landing LeMay affords Richt greater job security, it’s a good thing for the Seminoles, because going up against Richt in recruiting FSU “routinely beats UGA” for players in South Georgia.

The way this Noles fan sees it, if Richt loses his job, Alabama defensive chief Kirby Smart “is considered the heir apparent to the UGA job,” and Smart is “beloved in South Georgia, where he played high school ball in Bainbridge” and “is a better recruiter than Richt.” The blogger adds that “it’s easy to see why FSU fans want Richt to stay at UGA for as long as possible.”

I’m certainly not agreeing with this Noles-centric viewpoint; I just thought it worth noting.

Yeah Whatever,
I like your support of Richt. It’s easy for the ‘Me’s of the world to do the what have you done for me lately bit but what’s his answer? Get rid of Richt and hire who? One bad year and the sky is falling. Anyone with a lick of sense knows you have to get lucky to get into the title game. After the UT thumpdown in ‘07, we turned it around after beating Vanderbilt and beat people up. We had the same attitude that ‘02 team had. If UT loses one of those last three games, SC, KY or Vanderbilt and they could have…all three came down to the wire (Vandy roughs the punter up 27-9???), we’re in the title game and we thump LSU to play for it all. I truly believe the only team that could have beat us end of ‘07 was USC.

Anyhow,,if this, if that, whatever, the man is a solid coach and I would be thrilled to have him for 25 years like Dooley. Just because he doesn’t blow a gasket all the time doesn’t mean he lacks an edge. I would put his burn to win up against Saban’s or Meyer’s anyday of the week. It’s just not on public display.

I just finished reading the Q&A with LeMay and I’m very happy GA got him. I would hope he’s the stud everyone projected Terrell Pryor to be only better when it comes to throwing the ball and executing the offense.
But please man, enough with the god stuff…god told me what to do. Didn’t ‘God’ tell Reggie Brown to go play for the Packers (the team offering the most money). I get it and I’m sure the kid means well but what’s his preacher father teaching him….certainly not humility. He schedules a mob press conference and then puts on an orange shirt to trick all the manic Clemson fans who had their hopes up? I’m sure they thought it was a really funny stunt.

@ P Bull Terrier This again? Hmmm, who has UGA wanted that is currently at FSU? Maybe the kid voted the best high school football player in the state of GA in the past DECADE by the state of GA’s own high school coaches, Greg Reid. FSU also was picked by safety Gerald Demps in that cycle. Then just this year Telvin Smith chose FSU over UGA. Looks like FSU takes who they want from the whole state. SW Dekalb LB Terrance Smith is a FSU commit for this recruiting cycle. Check the offers by Rivals, you’ll see it’s true. UGA fans are in denial about which school will be selected by Drew and Marshall. No reason to get into that though, all in good time.

Urban had a 12-1 SEC champ that needed USC to lose. Had USC beaten UCLA on the last week of 2006 then Urban would not have been invited…Hence luck.

Richt had a 12-1 SEC champ that needed OSU to lose. Had OSU lost even one game (as USC did in 2006 letting Fla BACK in to the NC) UGA would have been invited. Hence luck.

What part of this do you not understand…but you call me a buffoon? Call me when you can find any other difference in the two.

You have to be very lucky to win a Natl Championship – Florida would not have been in the Natl Champ game in 2006 without USC inexplicably losing its final game to Karl Dorrell and UCLA. Look at LSU in 2007 and the circumstances in which that two loss team made the championship game. Richt simply has not had that kind of luck bestowed on him yet – matter of fact he should have been playing for the Natl Championship in 2002 and 2007 if not for some luck of the opposite kind.

Its interesting to note that UF and LSU have won national titles with the same record UGA had when it won its two SEC titles. Its not that UGA is not as good of a program as either of the two, they have just been luckier than UGA. And that’s the truth.

yeah whatever!

Unless you are saying Fla players sneaked into UCLAs locker room and switched Unis and went out and beat USC. If not then UCLA had more to do with Fla getting in than Fla. THATS the only difference between Fla and UGA as far as NCs go. However, UGA has been ranked top ten 6 of last nine but Fla only had 3. You need to learn football and get back to me when you do.

@Yeah whatever. You only need luck if you have a loss. Even when Richt has everything in place he fails to produce. In ‘08 he had Stafford who was the best pro style QB in the country, and the best RB by far in Moreno. He had a solid OLine, decent WRs and a top 35 defense. He went into the season as the #1 team. Remember what happened. His “blackouted” Dawgs got knocked out by Bama, then got destroyed by UF. Even with a talent advantage he cannot get the job done. What happens now that talent wise UGA is in the 2nd tier of SEC teams with USCe and AU, looking up at Bama, UF, and LSU…?

UGA 12-1 with a SEC title in 2002. UGA needed a team to lose to get in.
FLA 12-1 with a SEC title in 2006. FLA needed a team to lose to get in.

UGA didnt have the luck in 2002 that FLA had in 2006. ITS THAT CLEAR. What part of that is giving you difficulty?

Maybe instead of a rabbit foot a playoff. Until then the NCAA does not even recognize a NC as legit. It merely cites what a school claims. Even then it does not call it a national championship….it lists it as a national POLL championship or a BCS championship. All other NCAA sports are listed as a “national championship”

If you truly believe that today Richt = Meyer, or that right now the UGA program = the UF program, then your destined to always be a second tier program. I know what that’s like though. It took our fanbase 10 years to finally tell Bowden that he’s through. By your argument, we could have said in the last 10 years between 99-09 FSU had 1 national title and 4 ACC titles, so we must be successful. That’s a better resume than Richt. What were we thinking telling Bobby to go. C’mon man. Look at the trends…

UGA losses in the last 3 years:
2007: 2
2008: 3
2009: 5
2010:??

If this is ok for you, then fine. Settle for your consistent beating by UF, Bama, and LSU, and the yearly inexplicable loss to another team you should beat handily like USCe at home in 07, GT at home in 08(ouch), and UT in 09 by 3 touchdowns(!)…

yeah whatever!

May 2nd, 2010

I dont recall saying UGA should have a NC. I said Meyers having one based on the luck of USC losing does not make him better than Richt.

Second tier? UGA has been ranked top ten 6 times in nine years Fla 3 times…I guess Fla is not top tier either…right?

UGA has 11 bowl wins in 13 years…Only SEC team that matches that is LSU. So I guess LSU is second tier?
.
No team has won 8 or more games 13 years in a row other than UGA…I guess everyone is second tier then?
.
Richt is 9-2 in bowls and championships….. Name another with a better record in the SEC. Richt is 3rd winning active coach in CFB….is every one under him worse than second tier. L

Like I said stop posting…each time you look more and more like a moron.

Kirby will never get another call from Damon Evans after the way he pulled out of the DC deal at the last minute. Will not happen. Kirby’s bridge back home is burnt to a crisp. Muschamp is a much better coach anyway.
