LeMay’s a big catch, but UGA shouldn’t declare QB recruiting over

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

A few random thoughts on Christian LeMay, one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects, declaring he plans on attending UGA:

Mark Richt’s oft-noted professions of faith certainly didn’t hurt with this preacher’s son and were, in fact, mentioned by LeMay as one of the reasons he wants to go to school in Athens. But just as important (and perhaps more important) was the fact that Richt runs a pro-style offense at Georgia. LeMay has played in the spread in high school but recognizes that’s not the best offense for a QB who wants to play in the NFL. …

LeMay also is a big fan of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, which might give a moment’s pause to those UGA fans who are constantly calling for Bobo to be replaced. As our Chip Towers reported, LeMay said on Friday, “Georgia is the school I plan to enroll in unless something drastic happens. Unless Coach Richt or Coach Bobo is gone or something crazy like that, I’m a Georgia Bulldog.” After the nearly complete turnover of Georgia’s defensive staff this year, stability in the coaching ranks in Athens is something we should be hoping for. …

What does LeMay’s announcement mean for Georgia’s chances with the state’s top QB prospect, dual-threat Nick Marshall of Wilcox County? Hard to tell. Marc Weiszer of The Athens Banner-Herald reported Richt said this week that “right now our plan is to sign one quarterback,” but that could change if Logan Gray goes elsewhere. And, of course, it could change even if he doesn’t. This past recruiting season, Richt said he wasn’t going to sign a QB, and then had a last-minute change of heart and went for Hutson Mason. From UGA’s point of view, if the current situation proves anything, it’s that you can never have too many scholarship quarterbacks.

As for what Marshall might be thinking, Florida State fans no doubt are feeling better about the Seminoles’ chances with him, but as a co-worker remarked on Friday, the key to UGA’s chances with Marshall could ride on Mark Fox’s shoulders, since Marshall wants to play both basketball and football in college and has been offered for both sports by the Dogs. …

A NOLES VIEW ON RICHT

Speaking of FSU fans, it’s not surprising that they like to take shots at Richt, their former offensive coordinator, whenever possible. The Tomahawk Nation blog puts an interesting spin on the latest UGA recruiting news by saying that since landing LeMay affords Richt greater job security, it’s a good thing for the Seminoles, because going up against Richt in recruiting FSU “routinely beats UGA” for players in South Georgia.

The way this Noles fan sees it, if Richt loses his job, Alabama defensive chief Kirby Smart “is considered the heir apparent to the UGA job,” and Smart is “beloved in South Georgia, where he played high school ball in Bainbridge” and “is a better recruiter than Richt.” The blogger adds that “it’s easy to see why FSU fans want Richt to stay at UGA for as long as possible.”

I’m certainly not agreeing with this Noles-centric viewpoint; I just thought it worth noting.

patrick, if you were a CEO of a major company and your company had “underperformed” for the last few years, do you think your investors would say, “don’t worry about it, no biggie, we’re gonna just keep throwing our money at your company because you “USED TO” make money for us?? And yes, I’m including 2007 because the “earning” expectations (#1 pre-season ranking) were higher that the bottom line turned out to be. Then the next year was significantly down. I don’t think your investors would like the current trend. But chances are, it wouldn’t relate to you anyway because you would have already been ousted…..Well, maybe the coaching world is a little kindler and gentler that the business world, but it’s still a “what have you done for me lately” planet they live on. And if that trend continues………

2007 UGA was not the preseason number one…that was 2008. Jseus here I actually started to believe you knew what you were talking about. So in 2007 he OVER ACHIEVED since UGA pre season was around 20 not 1. This is too easy .

patrick, FYI, I was a metro/regional sales manager for Burroughs Corp/IBM Corp for 28 years so I’ll be happy to compare accomplishments with you any time. If one of my major account salesman would have ever come to me and said, “look, I know I didn’t do well last year and didn’t meet my quota the year before either, but look what I did in 2008!…. I would have fired him on the spot. Because he would not have had a clue. And actually, that salesman would not have had to ever come to me, I would have tried to find some help or some solution long, long before that, because if I had waited for him to come to me, then I would have been fired. Anyone who has ever been in high level business or sales would understand that, so I certainly wouldn’t expect you to.

You guys are getting a little chippy aren’t you? I thought we were discussing QBs here but as long as the UGA-FSU deal is going I will add my two cents. I don’t know why FSU would have anything against Richt because he called the plays that brought those championships. FSU has always recruited South Ga well and so has Auburn. Both schools are closer to home and parents can see their kids play without that long drive to Athens. Both FSU and AU have developed strong ties to HS coaches in South Ga. They will always recruit well here but they do not have a lock on this part of the state. No way. Gamble, Rambo, Nick and Shawn Williams, hell even Thomas Davis. It seems to me that UGA recruits pretty well down here. This is Buldog territory, just look at the vanety plates and mailboxes when you drive through Albany.

shane, FSU has nothing against Richt. The UGA fanbase is just touchy that they lose head to head battles for recruits in S Ga. Drew is the is one of many UGA will not land. You do know that a top 5 safety nationally who is a UGA legacy is already committed to FSU right? No ill will with us. Nice pull on Lemay, you were never getting Marshall anyway. UGA getting a more polished QB takes care of that, be happy…

Christian LeMay, my friends, is a huge get for UGA !! and me being a UGA grad, and one who loves my BULLDOGS, couldn’t be happier !!……..With that said, should we continue the hunt for another big gun at the QB position ? Hell yes !!………we are one significant injury to Aaron Murray away from a bummer season. Why in the hell did we have Aaron Murray and Zack Mettinberger red shirting at the same time ? If I’m not mistaken, Murray was ranked #2 nationally, and Mettinberger came in around #7……….It only makes sense to have at least two top quality QBs on your roster nowadays………..a few years back we had David Green and DJ Shockley at the same time, and we did pretty dadgum good during that stretch……….Now that we have Christian LeMay coming to Athens, lets go out and get another top QB, then start knocking down those 5 star kids who want to play on the new UGA “DREAM TEAM”……………..I do believe we are on our way BULLDOG NATION………….things are looking real good barring injury this year, but starting 2011, we should be the team to beat in the SEC………….GO DOGS !! Before spring practice I remeber reading expert national advice that the sooner a QB is selected, the better. Now I read advice that MR should not have shown his hand. General, My Dad always said to be nice to everybody on your way up the ladder because you would meet them again on your way back down. Other than geography, one reason FSU was so popular in South Ga was Bobby Bowden. he acted like one of us. He seemed like your grandfather. To all the bad mouthers of UGA ……….I know, I know, CMR this and BOBO that and MS this and No Show that blah, blah, blah BUT …….

UGA over 13 years and soon to be 14 years and with two head coaches, has the distinction of being the ONLY major university to win 8 or more footbal games ……….8 or more over 13 years in a row.

Not Oklahoma, not UT not TX, not Alabama, not FSU, not Florida and not the real USC and I am not talking about South Carolina. Ohio State, and Penn State and Wisconsin are not here either. ND? NOPE. Tech? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahha, aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahha

If this is such a record of indistinction, then what other schools have been here, because all of the “no names” would have this record of indistinction too …….right ? Hmmm?

UGA is also # 1 in BRAND recognition and top 5 in # of fans in the stands. Think about that, UGA fans leave tons and tons of money in the ticket offices, and in and around Athens on game day, all to see a lousy?? football program? It does not make sense.

UGA has a high profile, ultra successful, overall athletic program and only jealousy fuels the negatives about UGA. It usually stems from folks that never, ever attended ANY college anyway. You all know who you are ………….right???

Sgraupn is right, if you’re really honest about it. And I think that’s the greatest fear UGA fans have, it’s not about being relevant nationally or even in the SEC, but being relevant in their own state. I doubt there’s one honest UGA fan who’s feeling ultra confident about the next match-up in Athens. Untested quarterback, new defensive coach, too many unknowns and variables. Truth is, one more mediocre season and things are going to get nasty in Athens….

under Richt

He is 24-7 against the SEC West.

He is 28-16 against the SEC East.

He is 38-4 against nonconference opponents.

He is 8-1 against Georgia Tech.

He won four of his first five games against Tennessee, but has lost three of the last four against the Vols since then.

He was born the same year as Chuck D of Public Enemy.

Ranks third in winning percentage among active college coaches that have coached for at least five years, now that Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

He is 90-27, trailing only Urban Meyer (96-18) and Bob Stoops (117-29).\\yeah he is pretty damn good

Mark Richt is one of only six coaches to win two SEC football championships in their first five years coaching. He is also one of only five head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons

Coach Richt’s Red and Black outfits have never posted a losing record in conference play and six of his last eight squads have finished 6-2 or better in regular-season SEC contests.

Mark Richt’s overall success in Southeastern Conference action—including two SEC titles, three conference championship game appearances, and four finishes of no worse than tied for first place in the East, with no losing records in the process—is without parallel in Georgia football history.

Ere anyone attempts to argue that Coach Richt’s superb out-of-conference ledger is the product of schedules stacked with the likes of

Northwestern State,

Western Kentucky,

Tennessee Tech, and

Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl,

I should hasten to point out that he is 21-4 against

Arizona State,

Boise State,

Boston College,

Clemson,

Colorado,

Florida State,

Georgia Tech,

Michigan State,

Oklahoma State,

Purdue,

Texas A&M,

Virginia Tech,

West Virginia, and

Wisconsin.

Even if we factor out Division I-AA teams, Sun Belt squads, and similar schedule fodder, Coach Richt is .840 against teams from automatic BCS-qualifying conferences other than the SEC. (Yes, I’m going ahead and counting the Broncos in that category because the Mountain West will get a guaranteed bid as soon as Boise State is invited to join.)

There are those in Bulldog Nation who would like to see Mark Richt run out of town on a rail. Such people should be turned over to the custody of Mike Leach, in the hope that he will treat their obvious head trauma the way he treated Adam James’s

@ yeah whatever The argument isn’t UGA is very good. It’s that they aren’t great. Not once have they been in a NC game under Richt. Urban won it in year 2. Saban won it in year 3. When will it be UGA’s turn? My guess is never, because Richt is too worried about keeping his job e.g. He could’ve started Murray last year to get valuable experience for this season. Urban did that very same thing with the 07 UF defense. It led them to an 8-5 year, but how’d that work out in ‘08? He has no vision on how to get to the top of the mountain, he just tries to maintain season to season. Will get you good, but not great…

THATS the only difference between Meyers and Richt.

He went 7-6 at Alabama.

Saban has gone 5-3 or worse in conference 8 times.

Richt has only gone 5-3 or worse in conference 3 times in his first 9 years.

Compare that to Saban’s record and consistency in his 1st 9 years.
