LeMay’s a big catch, but UGA shouldn’t declare QB recruiting over

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

Will Christian LeMay be the only QB that UGA signs next year?

A few random thoughts on Christian LeMay, one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects, declaring he plans on attending UGA:

Mark Richt’s oft-noted professions of faith certainly didn’t hurt with this preacher’s son and were, in fact, mentioned by LeMay as one of the reasons he wants to go to school in Athens. But just as important (and perhaps more important) was the fact that Richt runs a pro-style offense at Georgia. LeMay has played in the spread in high school but recognizes that’s not the best offense for a QB who wants to play in the NFL. …

LeMay also is a big fan of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, which might give a moment’s pause to those UGA fans who are constantly calling for Bobo to be replaced. As our Chip Towers reported, LeMay said on Friday, “Georgia is the school I plan to enroll in unless something drastic happens. Unless Coach Richt or Coach Bobo is gone or something crazy like that, I’m a Georgia Bulldog.” After the nearly complete turnover of Georgia’s defensive staff this year, stability in the coaching ranks in Athens is something we should be hoping for. …

What does LeMay’s announcement mean for Georgia’s chances with the state’s top QB prospect, dual-threat Nick Marshall of Wilcox County? Hard to tell. Marc Weiszer of The Athens Banner-Herald reported Richt said this week that “right now our plan is to sign one quarterback,” but that could change if Logan Gray goes elsewhere. And, of course, it could change even if he doesn’t. This past recruiting season, Richt said he wasn’t going to sign a QB, and then had a last-minute change of heart and went for Hutson Mason. From UGA’s point of view, if the current situation proves anything, it’s that you can never have too many scholarship quarterbacks.

As for what Marshall might be thinking, Florida State fans no doubt are feeling better about the Seminoles’ chances with him, but as a co-worker remarked on Friday, the key to UGA’s chances with Marshall could ride on Mark Fox’s shoulders, since Marshall wants to play both basketball and football in college and has been offered for both sports by the Dogs. …

A NOLES VIEW ON RICHT

Speaking of FSU fans, it’s not surprising that they like to take shots at Richt, their former offensive coordinator, whenever possible. The Tomahawk Nation blog puts an interesting spin on the latest UGA recruiting news by saying that since landing LeMay affords Richt greater job security, it’s a good thing for the Seminoles, because going up against Richt in recruiting FSU “routinely beats UGA” for players in South Georgia.

The way this Noles fan sees it, if Richt loses his job, Alabama defensive chief Kirby Smart “is considered the heir apparent to the UGA job,” and Smart is “beloved in South Georgia, where he played high school ball in Bainbridge” and “is a better recruiter than Richt.” The blogger adds that “it’s easy to see why FSU fans want Richt to stay at UGA for as long as possible.”

I’m certainly not agreeing with this Noles-centric viewpoint; I just thought it worth noting.

We need all QB’s so no one else can have them. That is my approach.

A great day to be a Dawg! Mr. LeMay demonstrates the attitude of any athlete that we should recruit…”I want to be a Georgia Bulldog.” Hopefully, his attitude and character will be contagious.

LeMay is great person to be coming to UGA, and I am from Bainbridge and agree Kirby can stay at Bama, we do not need him in Athens! Oh and FSU sucks!

The only reason Free shoes University outrecruits us there is the fact that its a lot closer to Tallahasee, I think we don’t recruit as hard there…..maybe we should.

FSU fans can say whatever they want, it’s a free country. Likewise, Bumble Bill can blog whatever he wishes. The bottom line is that whether it’s from Bill or an FSU fan, it’s all conjecture. CMR has proven his worth as a developer of top notch qb’s, and the kids notice. Too bad the ajc doesn’t notice that Bumble Bill is obsolete in his thinking and a detriment to the Bulldog Nation. Go sell the redneck version of Jerry Garcia someplace else.

FSU needs to win more than 10 games to begin to talk any trash to UGA fans. We have owned them on the gridiron the last time we played them so….as long as we pull the Benedict’s and Murrays out of Florida I am ok with losing a player or two out of south Georgia to FSU. When was the last time FSU was relevant on the national college football scene?

This fellow will wise up and go elsewhere when he realizes that at UGA, he would be playing with a bunch of goons with low morals, no self discipline, and a propensity for being incarcerated.

OMG, GA is not even playing AL or LSU the next two seasons, does it really matter who your quarterback is? Your strength of schedule should be ranked about 227 as a guess. Oh but good luck vs Idaho St, that should get you in the top 10, if Richt cannot win with this schedule, he is a done deal.

I assure you that FSU has been nationally relevant a lot more recently than UGA has. And a lot more often too, Mr. Bigmouth.

Wow, those are some huge leaps by the Nole blogger. He almost sounds as delusional as a Gtu fan or a South Carolina fan. UGA is miles better as a program than FSU, has been for most of this decade. UGA has sent some Trojan Horses into Tallahassee from South GA the last couple of years.

CJ Mizell was a great get by the Noles. Really broke the Dawgs’ hearts when he decided to go to the Noles.

It is pretty funny that FSU is such a weak program now that they have given up on recruiting their HOME state, because UF is so dominant over them.
The way the Nole blogger should be looking at the LeMay commit is this: it is good that UGA got the best QB in the country, a kid whose Father was Urban Meyer’s chaplain, because the kid wanted to play in an NFL offense, not the high school garbage that UF runs. It should be easier for FSU to recruit against UF now because of that, but I guess that FSU has simply given up on competing with UF?

Having graduated from UGA 20 years ago now, I have come to realize that any connection I might have had with 18 – 21 yr old college football players (from any school) has long since passed. Consequently I am turning in my UGA fan card to AJC today or to whomever will take it. Goodbye.

It’s not a catch yet. The ball is in the air, spiraling toward Georgia. Will Notre Dame make a great move move and intercept? Will it bounce off a helmet to Texas A&M? Will Clemson hit hard and recover a fumble? It will all play out in less than a year.

Congrats on getting LeMay, but don’t talk about our offense. It’s light years ahead of yours and that’s been proven on the field……not by some loudmouth on a blog!

Urban played to Tim Tebow’s talent. Hard to argue with those results. Brantley is a pro-style player and I am sure the Florida playbook will reflect it.

Sure a lot of S. Georgia kids play for Florida State. Easier for their families to go see them play. Tickets should be easier to get also.

I am glad with the coaching changes. Can’t wait to see TG’s new 3-4 defense this fall. CMR has been doing a good job overall very glad to have him. Lemay welcome to UGA we are glad to have you! can’t wait to see you play! as far as Kirby Smart he was offered grantham’s job 1st at double the salary he was making before his raise we helped him get. KS consider all your bridges burned at UGA!! you would not come back to your alma mater when we needed you, you have been replaced! & Saban had already had TG working for him before tried to rehire him when he was with the dolphins if he could get him at Bama you would probably very likely be job hunting if TG is not such a good coach Saban would not have tried to hire him again!! lastly
there is no longer a job at UGA you are needed for good luck at bama being Saban’s puppet! As Alawys GATA GO DAWGS SIC EM WOOF WOOF!!!! Cindy
