Will Murray flourish or wilt in the spotlight?

Let's go ahead and put the ball in Aaron Murray's hands. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

Let's go ahead and put the ball in Aaron Murray's hands. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

I know many UGA fans at this point are tired of talking about the Zach Mettenberger situation, especially since it doesn’t look like we’re going to get the full story about why Mark Richt kicked him off the team any time soon.

There are a lot of rumors circulating, but no one in a position to confirm what happened is talking. Suffice it to say from what we’ve seen of Richt over the years, you have to assume that when additional information about what happened in Remerton reached him, it crossed some boundary that made tacking on a few more games’ suspension not enough punishment. Possibly the head coach found out he’d been lied to.

I do know one thing: Richt wouldn’t throw this kid’s UGA career away lightly. He’s bent over backwards to near-contortionist levels to give players a second chance in the past.

He anguishes over having to deal with wayward players. After the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting last week, I was thanking him for the classy way he’d handled the taxi incident allegations and the sorry saga of Montez Robinson. Richt said he appreciated it and shook his head over the Robinson affair. You always hope that you can turn a kid like that around, but sometimes you can’t, he said with a sad look on his face. “And you wonder why you couldn’t connect with him completely.”

Added Richt: “I really hate that it was so public, too.”

Well, I said, that’s the other side of the coin for big-time college athletes. He agreed. Some, he said, love the spotlight and flourish in it. He was probably thinking of Jeff Owens, David Pollack and others. And then there are those who don’t like the attention at all. “Take A.J. Green,” Richt said. “He doesn’t want anything to do with all that. He just wants to play football.”

Mettenberger, obviously, fell into the group who didn’t handle the spotlight well. And whatever he did, his story is, I think, over at UGA. I’ve heard speculation that maybe he could go away to Georgia Military for a year like Odell Thurman did and then come back to Athens, but I think that’s highly unlikely. Usually when that’s a possibility, Richt says so from the start. Plus, Mettenberger probably would just as soon start over at another program.

So we’re left with Aaron Murray and Logan Gray. Some still hold out hope that Gray the “athlete” will prove to be an SEC-caliber quarterback, and there’s always that possibility, but if he winds up as the Dogs’ starter, I think you’re talking more of a caretaker QB until Murray develops or someone else steps forward. Sort of Joe Cox with less of an arm but more scrambling ability.

No, it’s more than likely that Murray is UGA’s best bet behind center. A year ago, everyone was sky-high on the prospect of him playing quarterback for the Dogs. But the fact that he’s a bit short and has been injury-prone, plus his lackluster showing this spring, has cooled fans’ ardor for him quite a bit.

I’m hopeful, though, that he’ll yet rise to the occasion, as Erk would say. You know he’s a tough competitor just based on the way he came back from a broken leg to lead his high school team to a championship. He showed some really good moves at G-Day but kept overthrowing wide-open receivers.  Perhaps the competition with the strong-armed Mettenberger had Murray pressing too hard.

We’ve seen that situation at QB before. Remember how awful D.J. Shockley looked at times when he was battling the cool field general David Greene for playing time? Richt usually built a certain number of guaranteed series into games for Shockley (when he was healthy), but D.J. often looked like he was trying too hard, as in that awful interception he threw against Florida. And when he had to relieve the injured Greene against Tech. (Greene, you’ll recall, had to come back in to save the game.)

Once the job was his, however, Shockley relaxed and became the superb quarterback Richt had always thought he could be.

Perhaps that will be the case with Murray, too. Which makes me think it might be better if Richt and Mike Bobo go ahead and make Murray a clear-cut No. 1 on the suddenly tiny QB depth chart as soon as possible, rather than let the battle go on deep into August. So he can get that monkey off his back and settle down.

The spotlight is on Murray now. Keep your fingers crossed he’s able to handle it.

Personally, I think “Air Georgia” should be grounded for a year or two. There is absolutely nothing wrong with running the football with a veteran offensive line and (at least) two talented backs. Alabama went with this approach in 2009 and I would say it worked fairly well for them. Let Murray grow into the role while handing off to two of the SEC’s finest. Unfortunately, our offense is run by two ex-quarterbacks who love to throw it. Good coaches, but a bit pass happy in my humble opinion.

As bad as Murray looked in the G-Day game, Logan Gray has looked that bad or worse every time he has touched the ball under center in a game scenario. It is too bad he will never end up playing WR at UGA because of Mettenberger. BTW, I have to assume that either Mettenberger had some new alcohol problems in ATH or else he lied to Richt as Bill suggests. No way he gets kicked off solely for a misdemeanor arrest.

This is just too much. First Murray is the second coming for the Dawg Nation. People worshipped him even though he had NEVER thrown a pass in a game. Then he played the worst of the chosen 3 and everyone was throwing him under the bus because of Mettenberger played the best of the chosen 3 now everyone is pinning their hopes again on him. Did you not see how nervous he was at G day and how difficult a time he had seeing over his linemen? Prediction; he will start the first game and it will be much closer than it should against Louisiana Lafayette and Logan Gray will start the first SEC game against Carolina. Just sayin…………

I love how overconfident Tech fans are. You have had one decent year in a decade, and you still couldn’t beat UGA or win your bowl game. Plus, you lose almost every good player on your team to the draft. CPJ is a good coach, so Tech will be in the ACC hunt most years, but this isn’t Pete Carroll’s USC, the 14-year FSU run, or even Richt’s dogs. The Jackets are simply a good, not great team with little to no fan base.

Jackson

Here it is in a nutshell. Murray — shorter than your prototypical QB, lacks Pro Caliber arm strength is athletic but can be prone to injury… facts in evidence. Therefore, for UGA to have a successful offense we have to be able to execute three things extremely well. 1. Run the ball effectively… line it up and pound it. 2. Murray will need to change launch points… play action boots(please bring Greene back to teach how to properly hide the ball in play action), waggles, and roll outs… 3. Execute the bubble screen/quick hitch patterns to perfection.
If we start seeing freaking quick tosses and shotgun read options against UL-Lafayette its going to be a horrible year. Also, look at how many times the play starts under center versus shotgun. Richt and Bobo have gotten way to shotgun formation happy. Under center enables more of a run first approach and defenses have to adjust to it.

Murray has skills or he wouldn’t have been invited to the elite super 11 camp. Drew Brees is too short. How tall is Murray anyhow? While he did look nervous, he threw a couple of frozen ropes as well. All he has to do is execute the offense with all that junior and senior talent on that side of the ball which is easier said than done.
To quote Parcells, it’s not how many yards you run for that’s important, it’s how many times you commit to run the ball.

The schedule will make life easier this year. Unfortunately, I can’t think of a single freshman quarterback (David Greene, Manning) that ever won anything of substance.

it’s a good thing the O-line has to bend over at the line or else Murr wouldn’t have any idea what the D was doing. and for the record, i thought Cox was too short also. if i’m not mistaken, he had a whole lot of balls knocked down last year…they’re the same height, by the way…and no, they wont be moving the pocket around to get him in space a lot, that’s not what the offense is “trying to do”, per CMR and CMB…

as far as Mett, spoiled brat who thought he could do what ever and get away with it..i hate that, because he was the better of the three. no worries about him tho, he’ll end up in Columbia or Oxford and come back to torch us. those two schools don’t care what you’ve done as long as you can play football..

I’m hoping H Mason comes in and shows us he’s the man…pipedream, i know…

I think that this year’s QB doesnt have to throw 24 TDs like Cox did last year. He just has to avoid throwing 17 INTs like Cox did last year. the offense is stacked at every spot: one of the elite OLs in the nation, THE best WR in the nation, and two of the top RBs in the league. If we had Stafford or Greene this year there would be no doubt that people would claim this as the best O in the nation right now (except for maybe BSU or Bama). The great thing is-we dont NEED Stafford or Greene to still score 30 or more any given Saturday. Richt has proven that ANY week against ANYBODY and often when you least expect it, the Offense could very likely EXPLODE in any opponents face.

I agree with some posters above in that we’re going to have to lean on our RBs to be successful with a 1st year RS Frosh QB, but if AJ stays healthy all year and we aren’t at least trying to get him the ball 10-12 times a game, we are not doing a good job of utilizing our best talent.

Murray is the same height as the defending Super Bowl Champ’s QB. Murray is the same height as Zeier was and he did ok at Georgia. I think Murray is going to be a very, very good qb at Georgia. David Greene had bad Spring Games too. In fact he had one that was far worse than anything Murray has done. Of the things we need to worry about for 2010, I just don’t think the qb position (barring injury to Murray) is the area of most concern. I’m much more concerned with how thin we are at OLB and how inexperienced we are at OLB. I’m also concerned about our two DE positions and what level of production we can expect from those guys. Bend but don’t break is over, but we have to be mindful is that the opposite of that is don’t bend and risk breaking. You can’t have any weak links in this new system and not get burned. We are going to face a lot of coaches that can identify and expose any weaknesses.

We’re doomed. Murray is a hack. We should punt on first down.

I’m far more concerned with how the defense will gel than how Murray will do. The kid will be fine as along as he doesn’t force anything. In this offense, he can be somewhat conservative and still have big success. Just stay out of trouble, kid.

Murray’s ability wasn’t hidden, even on this GDay. Very, very quick release; very good vision, good instinct on scrambling. He had a bad day on overthrows and the Int, but CMR said it was just that–one bad day in a very good Spring for him. Bobo said he had never seen a QB work so hard on the mental part–work ethic great. His height and staying healthy are the only two questions in my mind. He will make some mistakes, but go back and look at Stafford’s stats, or whomever you like, and you will see they made mistakes, too. He threw a lot of TDs in HS, and he isn’t scared to throw it into a crowd–much like Stafford, so I would expect a few Ints, but just looking at his ability, I see UGA’s next Heisman winner. Bobo had Murray come out and hand the ball off two times and throw a screen pass while mettenberger got to come out and sling it down the field. Bobo got mettenberger in a nice rhythm while murray did not have the same set of plays to run. Murray might of overthrown some balls but i guarantee you he does not have an accuracy problem. Murray is a very smart hard worker that knows how to make adjustments.. April 20, 2010

Georgia DL on Bama and Saban

Gabe Wright
The star-studded list of unofficial visitors to Alabama for Saturday’s A-Day game included Columbus-Carver, GA standout defensive lineman Gabe Wright. The 6-4, 281-pound Wright was very impressed with what he saw and heard in Tuscaloosa.
“It was a real good visit, a great visit,” Wright says. “It was a little different from my previous visits, because it was a game atmosphere. There was a lot of fans and a lot energy. It was a great visit. I liked everything about it.

“I hung out with Nico Johnson. He’s a great guy. We had a great time hanging out. He did a great job of showing me around.”

There is no doubt that Wright has long been among the Tide’s top defensive line targets. At one point, he named Alabama his strong leader. He’s recently backed off that statement and now says that Alabama and Auburn are running neck and neck atop his list, which also includes Clemson, FSU, Georgia and Tennessee, among others.

“That’s the way I look at it right now. It’s real tight right now,” Wright says. “Auburn has risen up on my list mainly because my mom has had a chance to visit there, but she hasn’t been to Alabama yet. I think once she gets to visit Alabama with me sometime this summer, she will feel the same way about Alabama as she does about Auburn. I feel the same way I’ve always felt about Alabama. That has not changed. I think it’ll be good once she gets to visit Alabama and sees it for herself.”

Opposing coaches have told Wright that Nick Saban will be leaving Alabama soon. While in Tuscaloosa last Saturday, Wright addressed that with Saban.

“I spoke with Coach Saban about all the things I’ve been told that he’s going to leave Alabama,” Wright says. “He answered all of my questions very directly. He’s not the kind of person who plays games. He shoots it straight and direct. He explained to me that he’s going to be at Alabama for a long time. I completely believe him that he’s not going anywhere and I’m comfortable with that.”

Wright says that he’s doesn’t plan to make a decision until after his senior season.

Wright runs a 4.8 40. As a junior, he made 55 tackles, eight tackles for losses and seven sacks. He plans to major in criminology.

Clev,
I think Murray will be the big surprise in the SEC this year…I believe you will soon change your tune come Sep. I think our receivers are better than people realize–personally, I think they are the best receiving corps UGA has ever had. I am concerned that our O line is not as good as advertised, kind of like last year–that would spoil the prediction completely.

“Murray received 53 scholarship offers and during his senior season he completed 118 of 195 passes for 2,285 yards and 33 touchedowns with five interceptions. The senior rushed for 257 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns.

Murray only played in eight games due to a broken leg he received in October but the star quarterback returned in time to lead his team through their semi-final appearance and subsequent 4A title win over Lincoln although visibly still in pain.

Murray was named Hillsborough co-offensive player of the year along with teammate and favorite target, wide receiver Orson Charles. Voted All-Suncoast First Team. He was also voted the 4A Player of the Year therefore making him a finalist and leading contender for Florida’s Mr. Football of 2008. Murray was named Parade All-American, Orlando Sentinel’s All-Southern Top 12 Players SE, Pess Register’s Super Southeast 120 (#10), FSWA All-State, First Team QB.

Junior Stats: Murray completed 201 of 329 passing attempts for 4,012 yards with a 78 long 7 interceptions and 51 touchdowns.”

Dorsey Hill made excellent points. I’ll add Murray will be fine. He’ll make the expected new QB mistakes early but he’ll also learn from them. This kid has all the tools to be a high caliber SEC QB. Whether they develop this year is yet to be seen. I too worry about the inexperience at OLB and DE. If the 3-4 is going to be effective the new guys will have to man up

Bama felt right for Pensacola star

Down in Pensacola, the cat has been out of the bag for a while that Catholic HS star defensive end D.J. Pettway was headed to Tuscaloosa. On Monday, the 6-2½, 250-pound standout made it public by announcing his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

Pettway, who had over 20 offers, selected Alabama over FSU and USC.

“It’s a good place. It feels like home,” Pettway says. “It’s not too far away and I like the tradition they have. It’s like a family they have up there. I wanted to get it out of the way and let them know that I want to be up there.”

“I had talked to the coaches at Alabama and told them that I would probably commit to them if I could make it for A-Day, but I went to the NIKE Combine in Baton Rouge instead,” Pettway adds. “I sat down with my parents last night and we discussed everything and decided it was best to go ahead and call Coach Saban this morning.”

“I’m really excited about playing for Coach Saban,” Pettway says. “He’s a great guy. He’s very up front and let’s you know that he wants you. He seems like a good person. All the other coaches are good people, too. They do everything they can to help their players become the best that they can be.

“Coach [Jeremy] Pruitt recruited me. He was very, very helpful during the recruiting process. I’ve been up there to visit a few times and he was always very helpful and took personal interest in showing me around and in talking to me.”

As a junior, Pettway racked up 85 tackles, including 25 for losses, and 16 sacks.

“To my knowledge, he will remain a down lineman in college,” says Catholic head coach Greg Siebert. “He’ll probably be one of the down defensive ends in their 3-4.

“He’s a passionate player. He’s got the ability to put on some very good size. He could carry 280 and remain very athletic. He has great hips and plays with such a passion for the game that is special for a kid his age.”

Pettway will make an unofficial visit this coming weekend.

All you haters i think are jealous at least we have two talented qb’s to choose from. Mett only played with second team offense and deffense so he wasn’t a clear favorite. We will RUN the ball with success this year. By the time fall rolls around we’ll have our quatarback and we will be fine. Ya’ll can keep talking smack all you want to. Won’t matter cause there won’t be a 7-5 season or a 5-7 season. All you people who post your handles as SEC followers or whatever if that was the case and you were a football follower instead of a dog hater you would know we are stacked except we have a rookie quatarback. It sure is easy to throw when you have Aj Green and Kris Duraham, and a senior offensive line, and two incredible tail back, plus tight ends out the ying yang. so hate all you want we’ll see what happend when we take on ole steve spurier. Karma a mother all those years losing to him at FLA now he gets beat by georgia regulary. I really see a 10-3 or11-2 season. I think Auburn sneaks up on us, FLa could go either way. tenn gets drummed, and theres always that tough unpredictable SEC game that could be close. plus a bowl game . I don’t think he’d have received over 50 FBS scholarship offers if he weren’t up to the task. Murray was going to be the starter anyway. Remember that he grew up in TAMPA and was surrounded by FLA fans they all wanted him to go to FLA and he chose UGA for a reason. I think Bill has alot of key facts. After time and knowing the pressure is off, with more practice he will blossom into a great qb. i’m not saying he’s going to win the heisman trophy, cause he got alot of growing to do. I felt he had some jitters in the g game. One thing i did notice he had a strong arm and his head was alwasy reading the feild which impressed me, that mean he smart and we all know he can run alittle so let support him and give him till the season and let Richt do what he;s done before and devlop ad QB GO DOGS!!!!!

Murray is from 4A Tampa Plant which is the second oldest High School in the most affluent area of Tampa. The amazing thing is Plant loses probably 6-7 starters per year to Tampa Jesuit which is a 3A power. Plant won the championship in 06, 08 and 09 with 3 different starters, Marve, Murray and Ely. It seems a waste of talent. That’s where Mett cost his team. Gray cannot sub out at receiver now. I don’t know. Can a backup/specialist receiver and punt catcher also be your #2 QB? With all due respect Bill, because I generally really enjoy his blog and you are dead on with your perspective, but I think to describe Murray’s spring as “lackluster” is not only harsh, but innaccurate. To obseerve that he had a lackluster G-Day would be accurate. The stats released for each of the other scrimmages demonstrated that Murray was in fact having a very good spring. Also, comments such as the one from AJ Green stating that Murray took coaching better than the other qbs in the competition seem to indicate that he has developed well within the system and has the confidence of the team’s top star. At 6 feet he is no shorter than other very good qbs such as Colt McCoy and Drew Brees. I don’t seem to understand some people’s willingness to so easily dismiss this kid’s accomplishments both in High School and the Elite 11 Camp, where he was selected as the best all around qb at the camp. He is athletic; has a big arm; and seems to be a natural leader. These are all legitimate reasons to sincerely be excited about the prospects of this kid playing qb at UGA for the next 4 seasons.

I’m sure Murray is a terrifically talented QB…you don’t wind up competing for the starting job at a place like Georgia’s if you’re…but if he is indeed injury prone (or just not big and strong enough to take the pounding) then your team is going to be in a world of hurt. Yes, I know you have a great O-line and good running backs…I watched your team run ran all over my Jackets at Bobby Dodd in November…but without the passing game anybody can pack the box against a pro-style offense and stuff the run. For the Tea and Republican Party activists

NOW YOU WANT TO GET MAD?
We had eight years of Bush and Cheney, but now you get mad!

You didn’t get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.

You didn’t get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate energy policy.

You didn’t get mad when a covert CIA operative got ousted.
You didn’t get mad when the Patriot Act got passed..

You didn’t get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.

You didn’t get mad when we spent over 600 billion(and counting) on said
illegal war.

You didn’t get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq .

You didn’t get mad when you found out we were torturing people.

You didn’t get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.

You didn’t get mad when we didn’t catch Bin Laden.

You didn’t get mad when you saw the horrible conditions at Walter Reed.

You didn’t get mad when we let a major US city drown.

You didn’t get mad when we gave a 900 billion tax break to the rich.

You didn’t get mad when, using reconciliation; a trillion dollars of our tax dollars were
redirected to insurance companies for Medicare Advantage which cost over 20 percent more for basically the same services that Medicare provides.

You didn’t get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark, and our
debt hit the thirteen trillion dollar mark.

And Now When The Government Decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick, “You Want To Get Mad!!” Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, are all okay with you, but helping other Americans… oh hell no.

So we’re only left with 1 Elite 11 QB. It could be a lot worse, dawg fans. Murray has a lot of potential to develop into a great QB. We have enough talent to beat any team on our schedule this year, including UF (Okay that’s a longshot, but it’s still possible). Check out some videos of him on youtube or rivals. He actually has a great arm.

G-Day was ONE game (and not even a real one). He’ll be a very good QB when all is said & done.

Aaron Murray is 5′8″. He has happy feet while standing in the pocket and does not understand the concept of stepping up in the pocket to buy himself more time. His arm is weaker than ZM’s. He makes bad decisions (see interception in G-Day game).

Another thing regarding Ark and USC last season. The Cox led O amassed a bunch of points, but the Martinez D could not keep them from putting points on the board, also. USC is a big, big game this year. Maybe the biggest.

FP,
Murray looked great stepping up in the pocket on G-day. You are right about the pick. Also, consider some receivers dropped balls they sould have caught. Murray will do just fine. Maybe he is a little short, but he has a high release and will have a good line in front of him.

One of the worst parts of Mett leaving is that they probably can’t use Gray like they could have. Gray would be awesome as a wideout. Good skills, but the part I like is that they could use him on end arounds and he could throw or run. It would be a great use for his skills. I think he likes rolling out anyway. They could also throw over to him for a double throw as well as use him as straight up receiver. One thing I like about Urban is that he isn’t afraid to use his talent like that…think how he used Tebow in his freshman year. Instead of having the kid sit on the bench and wait, he found a way for him to make a difference.

Reebok, injury can stop any of them…you just never know. That is the worst part of Mett leaving. Regardless of who started we had a lot of depth. You know one of the things that I think a lot of people miss about Tech is just how good Nesbitt is at the option offense. You didn’t have a backup either, and that hurt you in our game, which was closer on the scoreboard than on the field imo. Nesbitt is very under-rated–the kid is brilliant at handling the ball.

If Richt gets a 100 yard rusher, he’s 40-3, and if he gets 0 turnovers, he’s 15-0.

All we need from Murray is to like McElroy, 15-20 td’s, and 4 interceptions. We need about 200 yards passing a game, to open up the running lanes and create balance. We don’t need 25 td’s this year from him, we don’t need 60% accuracy this year. But he can’t lose games turning the ball over. He can’t go Brett Favre on us. Just a td passing a game, and don’t get picked. Georgia HAS to dominate the turnover margin and run the ball if they want to win it all.

If Murray plays too high risk, he’ll get hit instead of sliding or going out of bounds and get injured, or he’ll try to set INDIVIDUALISTIC GOALS and end up throw too many interceptions. That’s the lid on his talent. He’s got to figure out how to stay healthy, and protect the ball.

Let’s compare Murray to Brantley

Murray did over 60 TD’s and over 5000 yards in 1 season and won 2 state championship against the highest level of competition.

Brantley played for Div 2B competition, and did not win 2 state championships, and did not throw for 60 td’s and get 5000 yards in one season.

Murray can run and pass. Brantley can’t run.

Murray had 56 scholarship offers. Brantley, not so much.

Murray sat on the bench for 1 year, Brantley has sat on the bench for 2 years. If he’s so great, why has he sat on the bench for 2 years?

Advantage Murray.

Why are we worried about Aaron Murray becaus ehe had a bad spring game? David Greene went 2-12 in his first spring game. We are not going to throw it 50 times a game. We will throw it 20-25 times and run it 30-40 times.

Picture 14-20 1 TD ZERO INT for 175 yards
Picture 40 rushes for 225 yards and 3 td’s

Hold the other team to under 300 yards with 5 sacks and a couple of picks/ints and we are back to Van gorder results.

We can win a lot of games 28-14.

Whoever plays quarterback will have some tools in the chest that we have not had in a while: a devastating (and deep) offensive line, two game breakers at running back, and the best receiver who has ever played at Georgia. Quincy had the most athleticism; however, he had a weakness for other things. And, Zeier could heave the ball with the best of them…maybe not the smartest. I wish it weren’t true, but it is. No Charlie Strong? No Tebow? They are to the gills with five star talent.

Don’t expect the Gators to roll over and play dead. That being said, this is the year to beat them, and if UGA doesn’t expect to drop another three in a row. UF has an awfully tough schedule next year (although not as tough as UGAs the last couple of seasons). Remember Brett Farve?

Favre began his freshman year as the seventh-string quarterback and took over the starting position in the second half of the third game of the year against Tulane on September 19, 1987. DawgBuzz, We get it, you liked how Mett looked at that dress rehersal. You arent an experienced judge of college QB talent, and that wasn’t anything but a scripted show. Not the same situation, plays, or competition. That takes nothing away from Mettenberger. How is everybody suddenly so surprised that we would give a scholarship to a QB and him actually be pretty good? Did you think he wasn’t going to be? It feels like some are going overboard with the praise to make up for never mentioning his name 2 week ago.

And you have no idea what Murray can or cannot do from your 20 minutes of observation.

Also Mett aint playing. Catch up with the rest of us.

Now, here is the problem friends. Nobody would have cared the least bit about Murrray not having a good G-day game. Has any of our starters ever? Everybody would have said. No big deal, G-day is what it is. Lets get into to Fall, and given that we all know this kid is going to be good, echoed by every single person who does know QBs, everything is going to be fine. However this idea that Mett did comparitively better in a what is a false situation, (again taking nothing from him) folks are now all of a sudden down on Murray.

Mettengergers G-day had nothing to do with if Murray is going to be a really good QB for us. It’s possible that Mett had a good day AND Murray is going to be a good QB for us, isnt it? Who care what Mett did, he is a guy that used to play for Georgia. The issue is how good is the guy everybody always thought was going to be great here, and IF you think you can predict that from a handfull of snaps in 1/3 scrimmage games in April, this must be your first rodeo.

And Daniels, Renner, and Spellmen would have been starters too.

Earlier on this blog somebody mentioned Billy Kilmer as an example of a not-so-tall QB. Kilmer was drafted in the 1st round in 1960 from UCLA, where he led the nation in total offense. They ran that ancient “high school offense” known as the single wing. Our main rival in high school ran the single wing until my senior year (1963 season).

Murray knew the playbook by the fall…as for his arm issue, if the coaches would have paid attention to an 18 yr old kid trying to prove that he could get on the field and play as a freshman, maybe he wouldn’t have had a problem…I’ve seen him play game after game in 7 on 7’s during the summer over a 2 days period and he never had an issue, but the again his HS coach made sure that he took care of his arm…people will put themselves in precarious position if we let them and that’s why we have adults who should know better…still say a school the size of UGA should be able to have a QB coach to oversee these types of things

I’ve read a few posts that have indicated Murray doesn’t have the arm strength, however, I’ve found a number of sources that indicate otherwise.

At Nike training camp, “His release is arguably the quickest and smoothest in the Class of 2009; the ball zips off his hand with the slightest snap of the wrist. He led receivers on vertical routes and fit the ball into tight spots consistently all day.”

According to Scout, “has very good arm strength an unbelievable touch”

According to Athlon Sports, “Other than lacking ideal size, Murray has everything. He has great leadership skills, a strong arm, great mobility, a lighting quick release, accuracy and the confidence to use it all appropriately.”

Rivals claims Murray “easily has one of the top five-to-eight in arm strength in the country.”

We’ll be fine with Murray. Go dawgs.

Granted I am no professional analyst, but I really didn’t think that Murray looked so terrible in the Spring game. I thought he moved around well, and he connected on some tough passes. There was a pick, and he had trouble with the long one. Altamadawg stated it all very rationally above concerning the Spring game. I would just like to add one thing: a mobile qb is at a disadvantage with game rules that make him down when he gets touched. Who’s to say he couldn’t have shed a tackler or completed a pass with a guy hanging on him?

All I know for sure is that whoever the QB turns out to be, I will pull for him 100%. I will pull for the coaches 100%. I will pull for the Dawgs 100%. I truly hope that all Georgia fans are of that same mindset. It would help tremendously not to have people pulling against a kid to prove themselves right or calling kids up and harassing them.

The ones on here knocking Murray are the one’s that know he is talented and do not want him playing against their team. Again, the ones with the biggest mouth’s on here are the uneducated ones. Elite 3 QB. 6′1″ tall. Every good college program in the southest wanted him. He will do very well because of his talent AND because of the O-Line, if they stay healthy.
The Tech people on here running their mouth’s are scared the most. Gator fans know that the same will be a tough one for them when we play them.
My question is still about the Defense. New schemes usually take 2 years to gell. Go Dawgs!

ga gator – Though being a Dawg fan I will not sit here and say that we will beat UF this year. Until we can put 2 wins in a row together I won’t talk about the series turning. However, I have no doubt that we will destroy Tech this year.
Brantley will do very well this year. He is a very talented QB. Our hope is that your defense is still getting a feel for things when we play UF. The talent is at both Schools, the question is which one steps up and plays the best. I have a feeling that SC will sneak up and beat both teams this year. Just a feeling.

Option series for UGA

April 21st, 2010
9:52 am

With two very mobile QBs that can get out on the corners, I expect UGA will incorporate a series of QB option style plays. It is a natural, given the talent. I do not see AM as being able to take deep drops, then look, then find the receiver. I don’t think that is really his game. It is not Logan’s either.

Personally, I have always preferrred a QB that can tuck it and run with it out on the corners. Now, Aaron is injury prone, so all of this has to be weighed in.Tebow with his fullback ( or guard ) body could run off tackle and do nicely. Our QBs will need to roll out, look short or intermediately long, pump it, then tuck and run for 10-25 yards. This iwll keep the cahins moving with our running backs popping up the middle and off tackle. This option thing will keep the d off of them, especially with our awesome fullbacks out there protecting them.

Goooooooooooooo Dogs.

Dave In Tampa

Option series for UGA –
I agree. Murray will do fine. He has had 2 years to heal from that Senior year injury. He will not be as injury prone as people think. He is a tough kid. Tebow was one in a million so no one will be a QB that will run over DB’s like him. Murray does not have to be like that. You hit it on the rolling out and spread the field out. This will open many avenues. The season could not start soon enough. Go Dawgs!

hobnail boot – good comment but I think you are wrong on comparing Murray to Cox. Murray is a scrambler as Cox was not. If Cox was pressured he would panic and either take the sack or throw the interception. Murray has the legs and speed to scramble out of the pocket and either make yardage running or find the open receiver with his above average arm. The vision will come once he gains more confidence. Plus the O line has more depth and is more experienced this year and we will have 2 great running backs and multiple great receivers to dish the ball to.

Where's the mythical 6'7" offesive linemen?

April 21st, 2010
1:19 pm

Ahhh the mythical 6′ 7″ Goliath of players that Murray can’t see over, well there’s not one of them! Where are the sequoia’s of the gridiron, the behemoths between the hedges, the titanic of the tundra that all you expert fans spout off about! Well, there is one guy who is 6′6″. Of course UGA’s lummox’s of the lines all stand straight up to block, unlike every other team from Pop Warner up to the NFL, where the lineman block/protect in an athletic position where they have knees bent, feet wide apart, engaging the opposition in a balanced, controlled blocking scheme. But you geniuses of the gridiron insist that UGA blockers stand straight up like a grizzly bear and allow the defensive player to get under them and just wave them on through. And let us not forget about the Andre the Giant clones standing over 7 feet and when with their arms up over their heads block out the sun, moon, and the stars. Guess what you goobers of grandeur there is not a QB alive who can throw over these behemoths of giants. They throw in the lanes created by the blocking assignments. A QB has 3 to 4 seconds to read the field and get rid of the ball, a straight drop back QB with no mobility throws the ball away, or takes a sack, while a QB with wheels extends the play and checks it off to a back/TE, sometimes a mobile QB can buy time for someone to come back and help out, or he can just pull it down and run with the ball. Height doesn’t matter as much as, natural athletic ability, smarts, and taking care of the ball.

Below are the 6′ 7″ linemen that a QB must throw over…oops, my bad…wonder how Drew Brees ever completes a pass?

Back to Bill’s question, will Murray flourish or wilt? If spring scrimmages and the G-Day game are any indication, we have our answer unfortunately. Hopefully, we’ll see some improvement when practices resume in the summer. Otherwise, hope the running game is awesome and the D improves in a hurry, then hold on until 2011. Met probably improved more than any QB on the team. He was still at least a year away from being able to run a team, but he really did improve.

Don’t know why everyone doesn’t think Brantley will be good. Just because someone went to a Div 2 school sure didn’t bother you when you were after Christian Green the wide receiver from Div 2 Tampa Catholic. TC had another Div 1 prospect Chad Green (no relation) who was recruited by every elite football team in the country. Div 2 schools in Florida are pretty good. JAX Boles, Madison County to name two have provided many Div 1 colleges with players. Brantley will do all right this year, and he’ll just better as the season goes on. Let’s see, he had a full ride to Texas and Florida who both won NC’s or played for NC last year.

Hey, did anyone happen to notice that in the G-Day game the dawgs were wearin’ real silver britches?

No! I’m not out of touch with reality; I’m just in a state of denial.

While I agree somewhat with the added pressure of competing during spring for the starting spot is a big weight, won’t playing an SEC schedule create the same pressure situation. I’m on board and ready for this year and believe it will be a good one. Let’s move on support those who are there and give the positive energy back that we’ve felt with the hiring of the new staff and addition of new players. Go Dawgs!

It’s really back to square 1. Whoever does the best from now until game 1, will get the start. Then, if they don’t do well quickly, the #2 guy will replace them.

Richt almost never loses to Ark or S. Carolina, S. Carolina’s running game is weak, and Ark defense is weak, so we’ll get through those 2 games.

It won’t be a problem because we’ll have a good solid QB by Oct. 30 for the 9th game. Might be Hutson Mason or Logan Gray, but we will be in better shape than last year by then and should be 8-0 when we play Florida. The SEC really doesn’t have any QB’s better than Murray if you look at Spring accuracy. McElroy had a bad spring, so did Brantley, so did everybody else.

I hope Richt learns from his mistakes, and lets 2 QB’s get lots of experience this season, so 2011 will not be in the s ame place as UGA is right now.

The schedule is quite easy in 2010, Richt has an excellent record against everyone on the schedule except Florida. And anytime he has a 100 yard rusher and wins the to battle, he beats Florida. Florida and Bama and Auburn have really tough schedules. So we have a chance at 14-0, as hard as that is to believe. I think we can’t be worse at the QB than we were in 2009. Hard to imagine 40 fumbles and interceptions and only getting 1 takeaway per game.

I’d like to see Georgia run well, hold scoring to under 20, and win the turnover margin in each game. That will really take the pressure off the QB.

If you don’t know what happened by now, that is your own fault for posting instead of reading.

If anyone is going to criticize Coach Richt over dismissal, they are wrong.

If anyone is going to support ZM, they are very wrong.

http://theugablog.blogspot.com/2010/04/things-still-are-not-adding-up.html?showComment=1271776133039#c4673469138288678146

You can also read about on 680 The fan, and while that is a media guy writing it, he has 3 sources.

Or you can read about it first hand. They all say exactly the same details.

Before anyone makes any statements in support of ZM, or statements about Coach Richt in this, you should stop posting and start reading. This is not done. It isn’t. And, you can quit with your if he did it. And, you can quit with your I am not going to say what is reported. There is a lady who is owed an apology. How can you post that the drunk punter last night at 2:30 am who punted 3 punts in the G-Day Game should be arrested for battery and defend defenders of ZM, or say that those who say Coach Richt should have told you the facts are correct on that either.

The punter should not have hit the man in the face.

The Quarterback needs a lesson in how to treat a lady.

Compare these 2 to the Defensive End who picked the little student up and slammed her repeatedly to the floor of McWhorter Hall.

I am sorry those are 3 criminals. You hit a person in the face at 2:30 am last night, drunk. You beat up a girl again a week ago. You clearly for all to see treated a lady the way no one does a month and a half ago. Coach Richt will kick all 3 off the team, and this just since the beginning of Spring Practice. There is no difference in what the Defensive End did and what the Quarterback did, none. This just makes me cry. And, don’t give me this, this is what happens at every other school B.S. Not 93 times in the 9-year Coach Richt Era. Maybe gets drunk at 2:30 am and hit a man in the face; but it cannot happen to beat up a little girl student at The University of Georgia or go to Remerton and do this to a little Sorority lady student there. There is nothing more vile than this by the Defensive End or the Quarterback. Equivalent. The Sorority said they want the Quarterback to get all he deserves.

If they are not taught this at home, then I know someone who just did Coach Richt.

I know I didn’t look really good at the G-day game. But coach said I looked alot like Joe Cox so I must be getting better. Sure my throws were weak and I would have been sacked a half dozen times ( they wouldn’t let those boys touch me ) but that doesn’t matter. AltamahaDawg knows how good I am….he’s a expert. After I fail in the fall and they need a new coach I hope AltamahaDawg gets the call. He knows talent when he sees it!
