Zach Mettenberger has been kicked off the team. (Bob Andres / AJC)
UGA just made the announcement this afternoon. Not many details, but here it is:
“University of Georgia redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Mettenberger has been dismissed from the Bulldog football team according to a Sunday announcement by UGA head coach Mark Richt.
According to Richt, the dismissal is a result of violation of team rules.
A graduate of Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Ga., Mettenberger had been issued a minimum one-game suspension by Richt following an alcohol-related arrest in March.”
Obviously, new details must have surfaced from the incident earlier this spring in which Mettenberger was arrested for underage drinking and having false IDs. Those don’t seem like charges that would get you kicked off the team, and it’s hard to believe Richt would have let him go through spring practice if he was going to dismiss him just for that.
And, of course, Mettenberger finished the spring with the best showing by a Georgia QB at G-Day.
Anyway, this leaves Georgia with just two quarterbacks until Hutson Mason gets on campus in August. Dogs fans better hope Aaron Murray really is the real deal!

It has to be a new incident, not from the one this past spring. I am sure that one of the stipulations of punishment had to be staying away from alcohol related problems and he must have failed to do so this past weekend.

Good for CMR for attempting to clean up the team. It takes some balls to dismiss your #1 QB and that should send a message (loud and clear) to the rest of the team.

Way to go Richt, this needs to happen when kids violate rules. Better now than in mid season. Murray was the answer anyway. Mett seemed to have an arrogance about him that didn’t serve him well in the end.

Good job by Richt. I thought Mett would have won the job, as he is a better passer than Murray or Grey. But looks like Murray will have to use that mobility in the pocket and sharpen up that passing for the fall. dogs are probably going to be more of an alabama like team anyway, focus on the run and pass when they have to. Dogs should be more worried a/b their defense, with two good tailbacks, and a experienced O-line, their O should be fine.

Unusually harsh discipline handed out by the ever-tanned one. But with the o-line and rb’s he’s got returning, cutting a QB loose isn’t going to hurt too much. As long as Murray stays healthy, though.

It sounds like this was the last straw for CMR and this young man. If you can’t follow team rules as a SEC QB, he needs to play in the Sun Belt Conf. or the MEAC or someother league that is not as high profile. Hope he can turn this around!

Something else HAD to happen other than the incident in March. NO! I just typed over four cuss words,,,dang, gawldang, NO. Even though he was playing against the second team defense, some of those throws were Stafford like.
Man,,,you knew Murray would be your starter and he has a cannon of his own, possibly a better understanding of executing the offense and obviously more mobility, but god forbid Murray gets hurt, we’re in for another eight win year.

I am not here to heckle you fans, if GT is going to beat UGA I want it to be both teams at full strength with the best of the best on the field head to head. Kinda thought Mett was the best of the QB’s.

Just because he is off the team, for now, doesn’t mean he can’t be reinstated at a later date. See Oregon and their RB (or was it a WR?). Anyway, Mett may get it together, pay his punishment and return next year… or not.
As for him being the best QB in the G-Day game, several players (incl. the other 2 QBs) said it was Mett’s best scrimmage of his college career (all last year and this Spring). So, considering that and the immaturity he showed earlier in his 5-MD arrest, he was too young to lead the Dawgs this year anyway, IMHO.
Either way, good luck to the young man. I hopes he gets it figured out and has a stellar career somewhere. Go Dawgs!

Apparently there were more details about the spring break incident that just recently surfaced. I don’t have any substantiated information so I’ll just leave it at that. But for all you guys who have thought that CMR was going to put up with poor discipline and other crap from his players at Georgia, this serves as a refutation to that premise. He just dismissed a possible first round draft pick from the team. This will serve notice to everyone else on the squad that no one is immune. I mean, Mett’s mom works in the U.Ga. athletic office (and has for over a decade)!
And Goldtimer, things are so “sad” in Athens that we’ve beaten your insects 8 out of the last 9 times (and will easily make it 9 out of 10 this season). Coming from a fan of a program that is a living, breathing example of mediocrity, and a the second-rated program in a state with only two BCS football teams, that’s an awfully rash statement. Tech had no defense last season and lost their best defender. Tech’s best receiver and best running back are both gone, and the Georgia offense that ran roughshod over the Tech defense returns 10 of 11 starters. The Georgia defense will be rejuvenated under Grantham his season. And you’re trash-talking?
Talk about delusional….

I’m not getting warm fuzzies about this at all. I do take some solace in the fact that Montez Robinson was given every opportunity, and just couldn’t get his act together. Can you say the same for this kid? In the end I hope so, but it was clear to me from the comment CMR made about “Murray not having his best game” after the Spring game that Zach is definately not his choice for the starting QB. I don’t care if Murray didn’t have his best game. I saw the Spring game, and under all the pressure and hype, I saw Zach rise up and look great, while the other two choked under the spotlight. Here’s my point, if CMR had announced that Zach won the Spring competition, and named him starter, or even co starter, would that have been enough motivation for him to keep his nose clean? Maybe he was thinking he didn’t have a chance no matter what he did on the field. Maybe CMR was looking for a reason not to name him the starter, and found it. I just feel bad for this kid. Is drinking in college the unpardonable sin? This guy is gonna transfer to an SEC team somewhere, and light us the **** up when he gets the chance. I might even be cheering him on when he does. Good Luck Zach.

Strange but true! It is hard to believe that he did nothing else wrong and new information is coming to light about an arrest several weeks ago. Very sad day for UGA, he did show the best performance by far in the G-Day game, rocket throws, accurate long-balls, remember, one other was on target and dropped, would have been 7-10 for about 170 yards. Other QB’s reminded me of Joe Cox, here comes a rush, throw it, and often times big misses of the receiver. Hoping Murray really steps it up, sure would take another David Greene!

This is a big loss however the player must know who is in charge. This can work i8n our favor in the long run if Zack uses bad judgment off the field it would only be a matter of time before it would cost us a game or two during the season. Also lack of self control could and would spread throught the team remember the Quincy Carter and Jasper Sanks years. Aaron Murray will be a great Qb for the dawgs this season and is a true leader on and off the field.I hope the recruiting of Christian Lemay picks up and make him a top target. Good move by CMR to put the fire out right away and let the team know that this type of off field behavior will not be accepted by the staff and team any longer

I hate it about Mettenberger he looked like the best QB on Gday. But there has to be more here than we know about something major must have happened for Richt to dismiss him from the team we will have to wait & see
Mon what led up to it. Murray you are really going to have to work harder now since HM arrives in August he could give you a run for the QB job I ‘ve read he’s like Eric Zier if this is true we need to work with him & get him on the field we could rotate him & Murray. I hope Mettenberger learns from his mistakes sorry for his family & especially his mom since she works for the athletic dept. But he has to abide by the rules like the rest of the players we are trying to turn things around this yr 3 new coaches & new players &tring to learn a new defense everyone is going to have to be more discplined. Hang in dawg fans we’ve worked too hard so far to let this stop us have faith in our coaching staff & lets see how HM does when he gets here & as always GATA

Makes you wonder if this is the reason Richt wouldn’t name a starter. Must have been something in the wind that was confirmed. Remember, it took Richt a week or so to even make the decision to suspend Berger for the “standard” one game, so maybe something else from that original incident reared it’s ugly head and could not be swept away or “smoothed over”.

So we are all wondering what happened, right? Something recent right? Something even last night maybe, right?
Here’s what I think happened. RIcht finally exhaulted Murray as the #1 for now and Mett flipped as he thinks he was entitled due to his play and being a local kid(subliminally).
And then Richt said take a hike. Anyone with me on this? Hey, if we are not given information, people will speculate.

CMR continues to have the most specific set of rules of any SEC school. That is something all Dawgs should be proud of. And yes, Mett may well end up playing for one of our rivals. They are all more lenient than CMR. He does have complete control of the team as the players continue to learn.
Also, I always believed Mett would end up transferring anyway, rather than being the back up QB for the next 4 years. He is still a future NFL QB.

Hey UGA: 1 down and 2 to go! Typical UGAG problems. Way to go Mettlnloser: LMFAO!
Coach Mark Richt announced Sunday that touted redshirt freshman Zach Mettenberger was kicked off the team for violating team rules.
Mettenberger threw two touchdowns in Georgia’s April 10 spring game but already was facing at least a one-game suspension after being arrested on alcohol charges during spring break. The team didn’t reveal if Mettenberger was involved in another incident, or if his dismissal from the team was the result of more details becoming known from his arrest.
The Bulldogs now have a two-man race for starting quarterback: redshirt freshman Aaron Murray and junior Logan Gray, who last year backed up Joe Cox during a disappointing 8-5 season.
The 18-year-old Mettenberger was arrested March 7 in Lowndes County and charged with underage consumption and possession of alcohol, possessing fake identification and disorderly conduct-obstruction. The school never made him available to comment on the charges.

Every year, a few of the draft’s top prospects appear on the confidential list for failed NFL Scouting Combine drug tests.
FOXSports.com has learned the two biggest names for 2010: Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer and Southern California tight end Anthony McCoy.
Dwyer tested positive in February for amphetamines, but this appears unlikely to hurt his standing as a late first-round/early second-round selection in this week’s draft.

But here are the Tech fans……so interested in us. It is just so funny…the envy I mean.
There is a golf tourney I play in every year with a great deal of Tech fans. And for some odd reason, they listen to the MARK RICHT SHOW. THE MARK RICHT SHOW.

Met had a lot to learn from the time he entered last spring, and actually improved greatly, but he was still a year away from putting it all together. It’s a shame that a kid who grew up loving UGA, received a full ride, improved greatly, could have this happen. If he really wants to play this year doesn’t he have to go to a JC, or is there a school in another division where he can play a year, then transfer to a Div 1 or Div 2 school following that season. If he wasn’t named starter, and he didn’t take it too well, my guess would be that he was going to transfer anyway. I sort of hope it’s that he got beat out and spouted off about it to CMR, this is better for him rather than getting in trouble with the law again. Moving from HS sports to college sports is a tough adjustment for most kids (very humbling).

As for “4 ncs are better than 1″ all I can say is what an idiot. I think he is actually happy this has happened to the young man. Now that is sick and less than human. He is apparently too stupid to grasp that this is about so much more than football. We’re talking about a young man’s life here. Of course, many others on here are apparently just as clueless as all they seem to care about is what this means to the football team. The kid didn’t blow out his knee, he has made a major life mistake. Do you folks have a clue about life? Or is football your life? If so, might I suggest you get a life.

Prior to reading other articles discussing this very incident, there are a ton of rumors surfacing. The most popular rumor is that zm was going be charged with some type of sexual assualt. Now if this is true and honestly none of us no for sure then I believe that the young man made a terrible mistake. But in my opinion, he should have been given another shot for redemption. Going forward, it is my belief that cmr is going to have to exercise a tight ship with all of his players for this dismissal to make any concrete sense.

what ever happened will come out sooner or later and more than likely won’t be good. what really concerns me more than what’s at stake in the qb race has more to do with the two families caught up in all this. number one is the mettenberger family whose son is the center of all the rumors, of which is 99% of what’s on this blog. as bad as that is his mom work’s with or for coach richt and uga for a good number of years. number two is coach richt who like it or not becomes these kid’s father away from home for up to five years and loves these kids just like they were his on. then you throw in the kids mom who over the years he has learned to love like family. i know one thing i sure wouldn’t want to have to make some of the choices he has to make and all the sleepless night’s he goes through. i raised two kids and was very blessed they gave me no trouble at all. he has 85 plus a recruiting class to go to bed and worry about each night. the point i’m trying to make is, coaching football is the easy part and whose going to be the qb is the least of his worries.

In 2005 UGA signed 19 recruits. Only 12 got in that fall. UGA & Vandy have the most difficult entrance requirements in the SEC. CMR has rules & penalties resulting from not following those rules that are fair & known to all of the players. No one does a better job of screening recruits than CMR. What he did makes me proud to be a DAWG FAN. Now Mett will probably end up playing for one of our rivals. He is still a future NFL QB.

Mark Richt has to do what is best for his football team and the university. It was a really tough call I’m sure but he’s paid to evaluate and make these kinds of decisions. It really is a shame that Mettenberger could not have gotten another opportunity. Perhaps he did and messed that up. We do not know. He is still innocent until proven guilty and as of now there is no conclusion as to what transpired down in South Georgia. Things happen for certain reasons, and it is hard not to be thinking positively for Mr. Mettenberger and his family. Things will be better. They are and will be Bulldogs and of course we should wish the best for them.
Until, we see the real results, it is very difficult to see this dismissal as being the outcome from everything that occurred from the one incident. For the record, ZM had no second or third chance, did not cause harm to another, did not test positive for drug use, did not damage or steal property, and did not commit a moving violation whether he was under the influence of something or not. After considering all of that, this dismissal still looks very strange given the previous history of offenses that have been tolerated in Athens.
At any rate, Hutson Mason definitely has a tremendous opportunity once he arrives in Athens this Summer. Look for him to give significant competition to Gray and Murray. After watching Murray’s decision making and throwing ability at the G-Day game last week, Mason will be seeing live action considerably this upcoming season. I’m tired of street thug, dread lock, tatooed, burned symboled athletes who can’t put a sentence together bringing a street fight mentality and lawlessness to college athletics. It’s time to clean up the entire mess. Athletes have gone too far riding their importance and egos. This was the right move for CMR and it will pay dividens now and in the future. This sends the message that should have been sent several years ago. If he’ll send dumb ole Matt packing, he’ll send you packing.
I’d prefer to win with class than have a win at any cost program. It may be tougher but it will be better. If Mattenberger couldn’t do the deal, he needed to be put on the road. He sounds like a spoiled, hard headed, ego centered trouble maker to me. Go Dawgs … keep some class.

It is not a big blow to Dogs’ Offense that Zach Mettenberger is charged with yet another charge from a very bad night for him in Remington because when the news comes out, all the “fans” who think you can only say good stuff about losing to 5 SEC East teams in the last 4 years, none of the 5 of whom are found in the Top 25 Final AP Polls the last 4 years, will say that well he isn’t on our team.
2 Georgia Bulldogs’ football recruits of Rodney Garner / Coach Richt have been dismissed from the team for what they did off the field DURING SPRING PRACTICE.
1 beat up a girl. Truth be told, he did that October 20, 2009. He slammed her into a dumpster. He was suspended for 1 game. The Shreveport Bowl game. THEN, November 30, 2009 Montez Robinson attacked her car in the parking lot breaking the taillights. He was suspended for the 1st games of this up-coming 2010 season. Only then, Montez Robinson at McWhorter Hall, picked the little University of Georgia student up and repeatedly threw her into the floor.
THAT
is when Coach Richt dismissed him from the team.
Zach Mettenberger one month and a half ago on March 7 a Sunday was arrested for arguing with the police trying to break up a brawl. They arrested him for obstruction. He also then provided 2 fake IDs. In addition this 18-year Rodney Garner / Coach Richt recruit was disorderly, and of course drunk. Now, we find out that he might have been on a trip to see a gal and that she has something to say about that night too, now that he was not the best QB at G-Day, but the Best UGA QB in the 3 Scrimmages including the G-Day Game.
What we saw was that Aaron Murray did not look good on TV in front of 39,000 Sanford Stadium crowds, but the facts are that Aaron Murray was not the best QB prior to that. Injured in high school, he showed up here, injured. Then, our staff allowed him to throw his arm out and he missed 21 practices last year. This year, we found that the QB who never took a snap under center at Plant High School, had to share time to finally try to get ready with a QB here for 4 years now, Logan Gray, who has 0 TD passes, 2 interceptions and 5 completions to show for his 4 years now in this system. And, had to share time with Zach Mettenberger, who was relegated in a 3-way competition for Starting QB to being the ONLY QB not to play with the 1st team offense.
Coach Richt knew this about his recruit of last year, all along.
It is why he did not let Zach Mettenberger play with the 1st team offense, despite being # 1 QB for the 3 scrimmages.
3 scrimmages # 1 QB, not just G-Day.
It is why he did not let Zach Mettenberger be named on the 3-deep Depth Chart at QB. It is why he missed telling us all the Depth Chart for the last 2 weeks now, even though he told us he would, not this weekend but last weekend.
Then, he missed this weekend’s deadline for announcing the depth chart.
92 arrested / suspended UGA Football Players in the Coach Richt Era.
4 years of substandard play against substandard SEC East opponents.
A QB who is small and only is 4.7 in the 40-yard dash. Seemed overwhelmed in the highly publicized G-Day, but frankly underperformed in all 3 scrimmages with 3 scrimmages worth of 5 interceptions and 1 TD pass, numerous sacks, and the team fumbled the ball, while we saw penalty after penalty which clearly were not allowed to be called.
9-4 or 10-3 in a 14-game season.
Don’t let there be something else I find out about later, Zach Mettenberger, Coach Richt told him. Tell me now, March 7. Month and a half later, yes Coach that happened also.
Gone.
While every other team is discussing their 10-3 or 9-4 season up-coming in 14-game seasons, we have the dubious distinction of hoping oft-injured small and slow Aaron Murray who did not perform well on TV in front of even 39,000 screaming fans, can witness at least what ?
No more arrests / suspensions ?
We get to spend yet another Summer talking about nothing but Arrests / Suspensions
AGAIN.
92 Arrests / Suspensions in the Coach Richt Era.
Look for Chris Low to have his say on this, now.
It is ALL we hear about anymore. Arrested / Suspended Bulldog THROWN off the team.
Michael Lemon. Odell Thurman. Montez Robinson. Zach Mettenberger. And, it does not stop here. We have filled the NFL with the same type situations for them to deal with too. It is the state of this UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program.
That and losing 5 games to SEC East Teams the last 4 years alone, none of the 5 of which are found in the Top 25 of the Final AP Polls the years they ALL 5 BEAT US.

Enough of attacking Murray or Richt over this incident! It is insane to think Richt would purposefully dump Mettenberger because he did better than his favorite son on GDay. I guarantee that both of them would have gotten a lot of playing time next year, and if Mett won on the field, and Murray didn’t–Mett would have been CMR’s man. Richt’s future at UGA depends on winning, not on playing favorites with inferior players! It is also very likely that Richt’s bosses at UGA weighed in with strong opinions–even if it was his decision. Finally, give Murray a break here boys: I think he will be our next Heisman winner, but I’d be the first to admit I’ve been wrong before. One thing is sure, regardless of which QB you liked, UGA will have a lot less depth at the position because of this incident. Now, let’s hope Mett didn’t do something that is going to land him in jail, and that he (and a lot of other players) learn a lesson, and that he gets his life back in order. Although I hate losing and love winning, when winning takes precedence over developing Godly character in these young men, this is the kind of stuff that happens. Richt has been one of the best in character development and winning. Don’t throw him under the bus because you are frustrated that your favorite in the QB race made a terrible mistake.

If he is kicked off the team, does that automatically release him from his scholarship, and is he free to sign with anyone? Or does UGA have to approve of his transfer? Basically, is he free to sign with another SEC team, say UT? That could be a double blow… UGA loses him and UT picks him up? If ole Lane was still there, I would be sure they would take him. With Dooley, not so sure, but does make for an interesting question. Is it possible?

UT?, it’s my understanding that since he is already enrolled at UGA, he’ll have to transfer to a lower division if he wants to play this season. He can transfer to another FBS team if he chooses, but he’ll have to sit out a year. Seems like that’s what Perilloux had to do when Miles finally kicked his butt out of town a couple of years ago. My guess is that he’ll transfer to another big time school and sit out until next season to enhance his NFL resume’.

BuLLdawg, I guess what you are saying is that you appreciate Mark Richt taking stand on discipline at YOUR university football team, although it came in the form of a player that you claim you wanted to start all along last year, despite saying last year that his skills were so bad that we had wasted a scholarship, but you still “all along” wanted him to play over Murray, whom you endorced as a backup over Gray who you thought to be a better starter than any of them, now of cource is simply another bad character that you calim the staff recruits and should have know that despite being a straight A white boy from a great family whose mom happens to be one of the finest ladies on the AD staff? That about right? And of cource your wonderful insight as to why the “starter” being named in April maybe wasnt quite as critical as you claimed it was just hours ago.
Or did you even have a point?

UT, the release of a scholarship does not superceed the NCAA rule on sitting out a year at another D-1. That’s not a coaches call. You can however bet your last dollar that Richt will work tirelessly to try to help him find a new place to start all over.

UGA Boots QB Candidate Mettenberger « MrSEC.com
April 19th, 2010
9:18 am
[...] The Georgia quarterback race took a shocking turn yesterday when Mark Richt dismissed G-Day star Zach Mettenberger from the Bulldogs’ team.Mettenberger was expected to be suspended for the season-opener due to an alcohol-related arrest in early March. That arrest resulted in charges of underage possession, disorderly conduct, obstruction, and two counts of having a fake ID. Richt had said that he expected Mettenberger to face the UGA-mandated one-game suspension for an alcohol arrest, but he left open the possibility for a stiffer penalty. According to Georgia SID Claude Felton, there was no new incident involving the redshirt freshman QB, so it looks like Richt finally got all of the details surrounding Mettenberger’s arrest.Police in Remerton, Georgia continue to investigate Mettenberger’s arrest six weeks after it occurred, so it seems that there’s more to this case than a college kid tossing back a few too many.Mettenberger was locked in a three-man battle to win Georgia’s starting quarterback job. While coaches have said the signal-callers were still very much bunched together, Mettenberger won the support of fans with a good showing at Georgia’s G-Day spring game. (All it takes is one look in a spring game for fans to decide on their choice for QB, even if Mettenber was working with the second-team units.)The dismissal moves Aaron Murray (probably) to the top of the UGA depth chart.Richt also dismissed linebacker Montez Robinson in the past month, leaving the Dawgs thin at the OLB position. For a guy that isn’t supposed to be tough on crime, Richt certainly seems to be making some tough decisions this spring. Mettenberger played Little League baseball with Richt’s son, so he’s known the young man and his family for several years. And the quarterback’s mother is an administrative associate in Georgia’s football office.Jeff Schultz of The AJC — who has criticized Richt in the past for his leniency — is praising him for his current tough-guy approach.Fans, meanwhile, are obviously more worried about the effect the dismissal might have on the team’s offense. As this fan/blogger writes, Bulldog fans “better hope Aaron Murray really is the real deal!” [...]

Diamond Dogs PO. You know that for a fact? or are you just spouting ideas that you wish and hope are the case? Nobody even seems to know exactly what he is being kicked off for….but somehow YOU know that this was forced on Richt.
Should Caleb King have been kicked off the team because of his moped incident first offense? I can’t think of another program in D-1 football that kicked a starting qb or a guy who is certainly competing for the starting job… off the team. I can’t imagine that what he did was anything like Houston at tech, a felon drug trafficker who was reinstated the first day the NCAA allowed or the guy from FL who shot a gun into a crowd and was allowed to return to the team.
That being said, I support this move by UGA and wish the young man the best of luck. I’m sure he will wind up playing at Ole Miss or Ms State or some other big time program. Does the dismissal release him from having to wait a year to play?

gt4ever, what do you do for a living? Oh thats right doesn’t have anything to do with scouting or rating quarterbacks. I think Mark Richt is a better judge of football talent than you are. Murray had one bad outing in the spring game and Mett played his best since he enrolled last year. So by your standards one good outing against a second and third team defense is ok for you and all the other idiots that think he should have started? Come on there is a reason why Murray had tons of scholarship offers. Urabn Meyer wanted him really bad and so did Pete Carrol and others.

ATL XMAN, Murry is your second string quarterback at best, he may even not be that. And while you’re ragging on Paul Johnson, please don’t even bother. What he’s accomplished in two years is phenomenal. You can even rag on Gailey, but he is coaching a professional football team, something I don’t see the NFL recruiting the preacher man for.
You’d better be worried about what’s goin’ on in Athens. It’s not pretty…..

Well, this really sucks. So much for the coming season. Mettenberger had come such a long way since last year. The guy took care of the ball. He out passed the other two easily. This guy was a perfect fit for a pro style offense. Logan looked average, Murray never did impress me. Hutson Mason won’t see the field unless the other two end up injured.

woops,
Shreveport Sam.
ive always said how envious tech was of UGAs athletic success for the last ten years.
all you ever played in was toilet bowls when you actually went to one while UGA was gracing Sugar Bowls, Captial Ones, Chick-Fil-A, and Outback bowls.
GT has ONE, are you reading this, ONE, BCS bowl appearance to UGAs 3
and of course when you do go to it (you lose it mind you) you act like you just won the national championship
funny also that while all this is going on you still get whooped by UGA in your house.
or should I say UGAs house, 5 in a row at Mini-Dodd bleachers
you win one game by three points and you think that you all of a sudden own Georgia which you clearly do not.
You are no longer a main rival for UGA, we need to focus more on Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee, tech is just a W on the schedule for UGA

Disclaimer….
Apr 19, 2010 — 12:56pm
Disclaimer: until I hear this directly from Mark Richt or Zach Mettenberger or the bouncer at the bar, this is simply what I’ve been told from three separate sources. One is a former All-SEC player who is still up-close with the program, one is attached to the program and works with Coach Richt on a weekly basis during the season. The third source is simply the third source — can’t say much more without identifying him, but is someone I trust. Very solid, never been wrong. Having said that . . .
ZM being dismissed from the program is because of two things — 1. There was much more to what happened that night than originally came out and 2. ZM lied to Coach Richt about it.
According to the sources, ZM was seriously intoxicated that night at the bar in Remerton. He was being very inappropriate with his language and then became inappropriate physically. One girl, in particular, works at the bar — she wasn’t on duty that night, but was there with friends and ZM was essentially trying to expose her in the bar in full view of others. The bouncer tossed ZM into the parking lot and that’s when the altercation with the police began.
ZM has several friends at VSU that he’s known from growing up together in Oconee. Several of these friends are all in the same sorority at VSU and the girl he was allegedly accosting is in that sorority.
ZM then gets back to Athens and lies to Richt about what happened. From what I have heard, ZM told Richt that he had put one hand on each of the girl’s hips to move around her when he was trying to the bathroom and she was in the path he was taking between two tables in the bar. No one else backs up that story. Again, this is according to three sources that I trust.

I pray that Murray lives up to the billing that I had been hearing before the G-Day game. I did not see it in that game. I just hope that there was a reason why he threw straight at defenders and threw it 20 yards away from his receivers. This really stinks, Mett was the real deal! My balloon has definitely been deflated some. I agree with an earlier posts that something else must have surfaced; CMR would not have let him continue on in the spring.

I love how some UGA fans love to talk about dominating GT over the years and how their worst team in years beat our best in years. First off that was not the best team GT has had in years. The offense was good with a shacky line and that was the worst defense GT has fielded in the last ten years. Funny how some forget that lasr years preseason #1 dawgs lost to GTs predicted 3-8 team. Last years loss hurt because on paper GT should have won, but once again the D let the team down. Winning by six is not dominating.

We can’t have it both ways; the fans have been edgy about the lack of team discipline for awhile now. I might have preferred that something as severe as dismissal wait on adjudication of the charges, but who knows what the young man admitted to Coach Richt already? Not good for the short term, but the proper message is being put out to recruits: Exceptional talent but questionable behavior will not be accepted. Period.

It does not matter what the Athletic Dept. is saying, there simply HAS to be some other violation that has occurred. Though this “ongoing” investigation from his previous arrest sounds ominous, as in possibly additional charges, it seems unethical that the police would have have made those known to Richt or the Athletic Department before any charges are filed. Not to mention charges don’t mean guilt. This just feels wrong to me, letting this kid go through Spring ball and all and then cutting him, leaving him less time to find a school to transfer too. There better be some more serious charges and not just allegations, or some serious rule violation that has just occurred, or I will have lost alot of respect for Richt.

Well, per Richt’s promise, we got the order for the UGA starting QB: 1.Aaron Murray and 2..Logan Gray and 3. Hutson Mason. Gee, this was easy.
Too bad for Mett’s family. His mom is a employee of the UGA Athletic offices, right? She has to be grim faced and mad. Too bad. Imagine how many kids would love to be in the hunt to start at QB for a SEC school and then they go get some cold ones and blow it all up with mouth and poor judgement. Dang. I will admit that several GT fans went overboard after the 08 win, but that was after 7 years of misery and some UGA fans saying once again we would fall to the mighty preseason #1. What sucks in good ole fashioned hate is that GT has fell in close scoring games minus 07 (31-17) and should have had 06 if not for the horrible pass interference call that should have been offenseive pass interference not defensive. My point really is that some UGA fans go on and on about being dominant and playing in the mighty SEC and slam the GT program, but with all that talent and GTs appearant lack of it UGA wins by a single score in low scoring games. That is not dominance if as some say GT is a lowly nerd school in a weak confrence with no talent around the ball. Can’t have it both ways.

Um, ah, the reason that we UGA fans get on this blog to pound on Tech is because of that twirp Saint Simon who in 2009, just banged away on his keyboard with noise about UGA losing to tech in 2008.
Usually, as in like 21 of the last 25 years, UGA fans go to the tech game watch another WIN over tech and then plan on some decent bowl like Outback or Sugar or Chi FIl A or the Capital One.
With Saint SImon banging away, UGA fans warned him that we would not let up when we handled you bees and we did. Had we won by only 1 point, it still would be funny. The numbers about tech vs UGA are irrefutable. Also, the fact that tech has been only to two major bowls in 42 years
( Urange Bowl ) is laughable and most of your bowl games were Boise Bowl or the Micron Bowl or the Gator a couple of times.
You do know that in 2010 the Independence Bowl will be taking the SECOND PLACE ACC team, as the Gator bowl FIRED the ACC. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHA They know that the ACC Champ is only ranked around 17, so why invite the ACC runner up, ranked 54th. AAAAAAHAHAHA

I was convinced Murray was the guy for the job until sitting in Sanford Stadium on April 10th. Mettenberger looked good, and he changed my mind.
But now he’s gone. Wow. Who was expecting that?
You know, I was watching Mett on the side line with his helmet off talking to other players. You could see it from the 26th row that he just doesn’t give a ****. He seemed to have the attitude that he could take it or leave it. Both Murray and Gray seem very focused on football. Mettenberger just comes across like he doesn’t care.
This leaves us in a very precarious position of basically having only 2 QBs.

This valuable information will help make me indepently wealthy. To think that I was depending on sports writers around the country gushing over his abilities. To think that Colt McCoy, Carson Palmer, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Pete Carol, Urban Meyer, Rick Neuheisel, Tom Lemming, Phil Fulmer, Tom Luginbill (who stated he was tied with Barkley for being the best QB in the country), could all be so wrong. Yea buddy, I’m just counting my blessings that I found all of you experts. If any of you experts have access to the team, please steer Murray away from this site. Murray is in over his head. DAWGS ‘D’ will be better, and even though there is a lot of talent on the ‘O’, METT was clearly the best QB. Murray will be no better than Joe Cox — more talent than Joe, and different than Joe –but by seasons end I don’t believe his stats will be any better. SO, we are right back in the same situation as last year –actually worse because we have less depth. Usually I look forward to fall football all summer. Not so much this year. METT was recruited for 3-4 years for having so much potential. Murray was recruited slightly because he was rated as a ‘TOP 10 QB’ by most recruiting analysts, which we all know that recruiting analysts are WAY over-rated. Murray wanted to come to GA all along –just as Stafford did. Richt probably promised Murray starting time just as he did Stafford (regardless of what they claim publicly). Murray is 6-1″; he will look no better in the fall than he looked in the spring. WAFJTI.

So let’s all wait to pass judgment on CMR and how this adversely affects UGA until the full story is told. He will play football somewhere, but I don’t think it will be an SEC school. His name is mud right now. I’m sure your mother probably told you, sometimes someone has to be made an example of and Mett was that someone. I wish him well and hope that he learns from this. Hop, etal. I hate to see ZM go, but CMR made the right call. We don’t know all the details, except as now reported on 680 The Fan, ZM allegedly was doing a watered-down imitation of Ben Roethlisberger on the night in question. CMR has proven he will stand behind players that make mistakes, offering them a second chance, as long as they take responsibility for their actions. In this case, it is reported that when CMR confronted ZM with specifics about his conduct towards a female, ZM lied. Faced with that, CMR has obviously decided he can not trust ZM to lead this football team. I tend to agree.

You said, “If this was some petty drinking problem richt should have studied what bear bryant did with namath.”
And look how that ultimately turned out with Namath: Namath, apparently intoxicated on National TV, practically propositioning a female sideline reporter. There is no such thing as a “petty drinking problem”, by the way.
Richt did the right thing. There is no way the quarterback can stay with that kind of behavior, even with an arm as good as his. It would have eventually been worse for the team to keep him.
