Is A.J. Green returning punts worth the risk?

Is the upside of A.J. Green returning punts worth the risk of injury to the offense's biggest weapon? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Is the upside of A.J. Green returning punts worth the risk of injury to the offense's biggest weapon? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

One thing G-Day never sheds much light on is the kicking game. As is the custom with most college programs, Georgia’s coaches decided not to have kickoffs in the spring intrasquad game, and while there were punts, they weren’t rushed or returned. The reason most teams forgo kickoff and punt returns in the spring games is chiefly because the risk of injury is greater on those plays.

Which is what popped into my mind when I saw David Hale’s update on the punt return situation over at Bulldogs Blog. John Lilly, who’s now special teams coordinator, said he spent the spring rotating various players as punt returner and isn’t even close to making a decision about who’ll get the job. The candidates appear to be Rantavious Wooten, Carlton Thomas, Brandon Boykin, Branden Smith and Bacarri Rambo.

Oh, and star receiver A.J. Green’s still a possibility at punt returner, it seems.

“He’s caught them his whole career here in practice,” Lilly said. “He has the ability. Everyone knows the kind of hands he’s got and he can judge the ball and do those kinds of things. … He’s certainly one of the guys that’s in the mix.”

Now, as I wrote a few weeks ago, I’m not a fan of using Green for punt returns because he’s just too valuable as the Dogs’ top wide receiver and that’s a pretty thin position this year. Yes, he’s a supremely talented player and can make a lot of people miss, so the chances are pretty good that Green could break a long return. But to me the risk of injury is too great — remember, they choose not to do punt returns in the spring game because of that very reason.

Lilly acknowledged those concerns to Hale. “Some people would like to see it, some people wouldn’t want to see it,” he said. But he sounds sorely tempted. “I think in any position on the field and in any area of the kicking game, if somebody can help you win a football game and has that ability, you would use him there,” Lilly said.

What do you think? Worth the gamble or not?

OTHER THOUGHTS ON G-DAY

While Todd Grantham didn’t show us much of his defensive playbook, one thing stood out about Georgia’s defense: The Dogs really look like they’re going to excel at pressuring quarterbacks. I have a feeling Justin Houston might wind up leading the conference in sacks. … Yes, as has been pointed out frequently, Zach Mettenberger racked up his impressive stats playing against the Dogs’ second-string defense. But keep in mind: He was playing behind an offensive line that was a mix of second- and third-stringers and still played smart in the pocket and completed big passes. Just sayin’. … If, God forbid, anything were to happen to Drew Butler, Georgia’s best option at punter probably would be placekicker Blair Walsh. He nailed some impressive punts during warm-ups last Saturday. … Carlton Thomas again had some impressive runs. And again fumbled. I still think his best use is not taking hand-offs but catching the ball out in the flat. … I don’t know how strictly the officials were calling the game — they didn’t blow the whistle on what should have been several sacks — but having just one penalty in the game was really encouraging. … Orson Charles had a really impressive one-handed catch where the ball was badly thrown behind him. He also later dropped a sure catch, but I think we can expect big things from him this season. … The alumni flag football game makes it well worth getting to Sanford Stadium a couple of hours early on G-Day. The Black team coached by my old Athens classmate Andy Johnson beat Larry Rakestraw’s Red team 34-27 in an entertaining match that featured, I think, only one running play all day. I lost track of how many touchdown catches LaBrone Mitchell made, and it was good to see Fred Gibson go up high to pull down a ball. Of course, he then high-stepped it into the end zone — good thing the new NCAA “taunting” rule wasn’t in effect!

Why not?? It doesn’t matter the talent or coaching level. It doesn’t matter who plays better. When it comes to winning a championship, it is just all about luck anyway. Florida is SOOOO lucky and the Dawgs SOOOO unlucky. Maybe it will change the good luck/bad luck dynamics…or maybe not. Those lucky lizards!!! REMEMBER: LUCK LUCK LUCK LUCK…THAT’S ALL IT IS!!!!!

Im so sorry I hurt your little puppy paw feelings.

Let me guess you three are the delusional retards who kept calling in on the call in show the last 3 years who stood up and demanded a contract extension for “CAPTAIN NEMO MARTINEZ”

I bet you three are so proud of the victory against the middle school team in Atlanta. Your like tech fans if you beat UGA you’ve won a mysterious title in your minds.

To blind to see that if UGA cannot compete and beat FL, it might as well give up the wait until next year hopes

Im glad we beat Tech but is Tech on the level of FL, LSU, ALABAMA, I don’t think so

Why don’t you three do UGA a favor and go pull for Vanderbilt where mediocrity in sports reigns supreme

I on the other hand expect more from a program and its staff that has the 4th best recruiting state in the nation in its own back yard and has had top 10 recruiting classes the last 10 years. FL can’t even say that. They can say they have beaten us though

But I guess as Spurrier used to say, they may have the top 10 classes but who wins the games and championships

You three delusional retards are the same three who think 10 win seasons are something, yea for UGA but ask anyone on the street name 2 national title winners in the last 8 years or name 2, 10 win season programs the last 8 years and I can assure you they will name the champions first and probably the champions as your 10 game season winners instead of UGA.

Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002 (prior to bowl selections)

Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck (not merit) had more to do with Fla getting an invite to the BCS not that Fla was more deserving to go to a NC than UGA with identical records.
.
Fact:………No SEC team has ever lost a BCSNC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins (90) over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team at 6. Fla has only been ranked top ten 3 times in 9 years (real impressive).

Fact……….In 9 years under Richt the only SEC team with more wins is LSU

Fact………..UGA has won 4 str8 bowls….more than any other SEC team.
.
Fact……..UGA has won 11 of last 13 bowls…Thats more than any team (tied with LSU and more than FLA)
.
Fact…… UGA has won 8 or more games in last 13 years…more than any other team in the nation including Fla.
.

Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
Fact…….UGA had same record when they won the SEC title in 2002 as Fla did in 2006/8 when they won the SEC title. But UGA had the misfortune (luck) to have that record in a year that had 2 other teams with undefeated records.
Hardly an indictment on UGA but rather on the NC selection process.

2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to have ever accomplished this)
4 str8 bowl wins
7-2 in bowls (big games)
Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)

Fact I dont hate Richt

Fact UGA has only been to the SEC championship game thanks to FL loosing out not UGA beating FL

Fact Saban has 2 national titles
Fact Meyer has 2 national titiles
Fact LSU has 2 national titles

Fact UGA has had 10 years of top recruiting classes with no NC championships appearances and SEC championships appearances have only been because of FL lossing out

Fact No of those schools can say they have had as many top 10 recruiting classes

Fact Among SEC schools, Georgia was first with 37 former players on NFL rosters, followed by Tennessee with 36, LSU with 33, Florida with 31 and Auburn with 30 UGA has more players in the pros than those teams also

Fact I respect Richt as a person as a coach the jury is still out

Anyone who keeps WIllie Martinez that long; well I can assure you Meyer and Saban wouldn’t have

Sorry people facts are facts

Of course it’s worth the risk; I want the BEST playmakers at every possible position they can help the team win. This is a team sport, this is a dangerous sport, take the risk any day cause that’s what’s gonna make us a championship team. UGA has got to develop a leave it all on the field, fierceness that has been absent, and now is the best possible time with the new staff members bringing new fiery dynamics to our club. Go dawgs! You got to be advantageous and opportunistic to be the best, sometimes being careful isn’t the best option – football isn’t about being too cautions!!

Normally, I would say if the receiving team blocking is good, no problem.

Catching punts is not dangerous. Running back up the field with them, IS.

90% of knee and ankle sprains, pulled or torn hamstrings and, God forbid, torn ACL’s occur when athletes are running and cutting when trying to avoid blocks or tacklers.

I remember several years ago Reggie Brown tore his ACL just running down the field on the opening kick-off at home against Georgia Southern. First play of the game…gone for the year.

A.J. is just too valuable. That’s russian roulette if you ask me.

Any one who can catch it and run with it… is good enough.

Having game-breakers on every special team would be real nice, but it ain’t necessary for our success.

AJ Green returning punts worth the risk ?

Oh, no. Let’s just keep on keeping on like we have the last 4 years.

LOST to 5 SEC East teams NOT RANKED Top 25 Final AP Poll last 4 yrs

1-LOST 2009 to vols UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record.

2-LOST 2009 to Kentucky UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record

3-LOST 2007 to South Carolina UNRANKED 6-6 not even in bowl game.

4-LOST 2006 to Vandie UNRANKED a 4-8 team for God’s sake. B.S.

5-LOST 2006 to 8-5 Kentucky UNRANKED none good teams.

Heaven forbid with 14 interceptions each of the last 4 years, we fire Mike Bobo

Heaven forbid with 21 fumbles each of last 4 years, we teach how to carry ball

Heaven forbid with NCAA # 96 Penalty Ranking, we practice our play calls

Might as well have our players run the team off the field do whatever they want

Might as well have Marlon Brown criticzie staff in paper that we should throw to him

Might as well have Logan Gray criticize staff in media for not letting him play QB last year

Might as well have AJ Green criticize staff in newspaper that he wants to run the punt return coaching

It certainly has not worked vs The SEC East to keep on like we have been doing.

Record at home: 46-11
.
Record on the road: 42-6 (including bowl games)
.

46-11 home plus
42-6 road including bowl games
88-17

Coach Richt is 90-27 averaging 10 wins a season in 14-game seasons nowadays.

Subtract your LIES 88-17 from what we know the answer to be 90-27

You get 2 wins and 10 LOSSES.

Thanks for bringing some sense to this blawg. Obviously we have some people on here that continue to think 10 win seasons are something. Let me break a season down for the retards

2010 Schedule

Louisiana Layfeyette
South Carolina
Arkansas
Mississippi State
Colorodo
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Idaho State
Auburn
Georgia Tech

Who on this schedule in the Richt era has been a powerhouse team (NOTICE I SAID RICHT ERA).
LOOKS TO ME LIKE FL YOU MIGHT COULD SAY AUBURN BUT YOU CAN”T SAY TENNESSEE SORRY

Now lets say FL and Auburn that leaves you 10 teams every year that UGA should win because we have better players

Also since we switch the SEC west add ALA and LSU again you now have 3 teams in a 12 game schedule 9 wins not that hard and really up until 2 years ago ALA would not have been considered

DAWG 39
Since UGA wasn’t a championship caliber team what about 1992 when we were 5 points from being undefeated that year losing to FL and Tenn. My point is UGA has had the talent for years it just takes the right person to develope it.

My point earlier UGA has more players in the NFL than any other school in the SEC right now

UGA RANKS 4th AMONG ALL NCAA SCHOOLS SINCE 1999 WITH THE MOST PLAYERS IN THE NFL

WE HAVE THE TALENT ITS JUST OUR FANS DEMAND SO MUCH LESS THAN WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE

WE HAVE TO MANY FANS WHO GET EXCITED ABOUT BEATING FL ONCE EVERY DECADE AND LOVE HAVING 10 WIN SEASONS

Pete Carol, USC hadn’t been on the map since 1978
Nick Saban LSU hadn’t won a champioship since 1958 ALA in 1992
Urban Meyer came in an resurected a FL program that was beat down by a coach named Zook

Get the right staff and you will win championships especially where there is talent to be gotten and UGA can get the talent it always has

Also is the state of ALA and LSU a top recruiting state no GA ranks 4th in recruiting

Rict is a great guy and I hope its him that can win for us but as BULLDAWG stated the last 4 yrs well what can you say, should not have happened

Get your head out of the sand and expect better and stop living in 1980

Some of you guys just don’t get it. If you look at Richt’s overall record its very good. But if you compare his record over the first 5 years with the last 4 years its night and day. The difference can be partly attributed to the fact that Bama and UF were both down in the early 2000s with probation at Bama and zook at UF. We were up because they were down.

Since this aint 2002 or even 2005 though lets talk about the last 4 years. This program is headed nowhere and is in fact now a middle tier program with a complete lack of respect from our biggest rival Florida. A coach going into his 10th year and with easily the 4th or 5th most fertile recruiting ground in the country shouldn’t be going 8-5 and losing the likes of people like Kentucky.

One or 2 bad years is okay. We don’t want to fire CMR over a couple down years. But in this era where 10 games should be easily attainable given 3 easy noncon wins and only 1 really good team in our division Florida how can you not win 10 games in a 13-14 game season? This year we play 3 terrible noncon teams, we don’t play Alabama or LSU in the west, and Florida is the only really strong team in our division.

We’re 10-10 in our weak arse division over the last 4 years and this is just inexcusable given the array of talent we have. Top 10 recruiting classes every year for years and years and we lose to teams like Vandy and UK twice in the last several years? Not to mention an always underachieving and less talented South Carolina bunch and a rudderless UT program that has whipped us bad 3 out of the last 4 years.

We got to take off the fire engine red tinted glasses and take a serious look at our program. This has been a very underachieving program for several years now and for the foreseeable future it doesn’t look like anything is gonna change. We have been reduced to pinning our hopes on a freshman qb who has never played a down of sec football and that is sadly unrealistic. Neither of these 2 frosh qbs could unseat the deplorable Logan Gray as qb after a full redshirt season and now a spring practice. The qb race continues into the fall and if neither of these guys can beat out Logan Gray and separate from him then I seriously question just how over hyped these guys really are.

If we are pinning our hopes on a D coordinator who was our 4th or 5th choice as D coordinator and was 30th as D coordinator out of 32 teams in the NFL in 2 years in his only shot ever as a coordinator then we are really reaching. You can’t put lipstick on that pig and make it fly.

Dawg 39

My Point: The Dawgs now have the coaching staff necessary to become an elite top 10 PROGRAM. One of only a FEW schools that can make that claim. We finally have the facilities, the coaches, & the players to compete for championships every year. Still young but very talented. One recruiting class away from having the depth to make the 4 year run which I am expecting. Time will tell.

With the unknowns due to rookie QBs, some uncertainties on defense and OL (Sturdivant), Georgia does have an easier schedule this year. The S.C. and Arkansas early games will be critical tests. Plus, according to the poster at 9:05 am, Georgia doesn’t play Florida this year. Assuming that Jacksonville game has not been canceled due to volcanic ash, that will be a tough one again.

Impatient Dawg, I don’t know that you get it. CMR has made some drastic changes, which many of us feel are for the better. How can we be on the decline when we just went out and secured a top notch D staff? I think CMR did take off the fire engine red glasses and did something positive. He fired his friend. I know a little about football and think we are headed in the right direction. I bet we are at the top of the SEC with our 2011 recruitng class.
I don’t understand why we are even having this discussion about AJ returning punts. I KNOW that a coach making almost 3M per year has better sense than to even entertain that thought.

Impatient Dawg, one more thing, I think Mett shined in the G-Day game but Logan Gray didn’t look that bad. He actually looked pretty good. All 3 of our QB’s could be starters on other teams. Look at Tyler Bray for UT he only completed 18-40 in their game. You know I am really sick and tire of the negativity toward the Dawgs. There is absolutely nothing we can do about the past. CMR has made some positive moves and I say we give him and the Dawgs our support. “IF” you are a dawg fan, what do you think possible recruits are thinking when they read the negative comments?

yeah whatever!

Definitely worth it, he could break one on any play (whoops)!
